Philly artist and neuroscientist Greg Dunn presents “Mind Illuminated,” an exhibit created in collaboration with Dr. Brian Edwards, an artist and applied physicist at the University of Pennsylvania. Through paintings, silk scrolls and micro etchings, the exhibit brings a new dimension to the complexity of neuron networks and the depths of the human mind. The Awesome Fest

T

hank God it’s …Monday? Head back in time to a place where neon was king and shoulder pads were in fashion. Celebrate the awesomeness—and awfulness—of the ‘80s and ‘90s through the sitcoms, commercials and music videos that entertained us.

Starting this week, Awesome Fest sets up shop inside the Foundry and brightens our work week with a free night of throwback TV, promising a “nostalgic overload of curated sitcoms, commercials, oddities, rarities [and] VHS movies.”

The Fest was initially created in 2010 by promoter Josh Goldbloom to showcase and screen independent films in non-traditional spaces throughout the city. It has since expanded to become the city’s first ever drive-in movie theater and produces an annual summer outdoor film and music festival which screens more than 250 films and features music, comedy and art exhibits.

Tonight, settle in for a sweatpant-wearing sing-along to the opening credit songs of your favorite TGIF shows, including Perfect Strangers, Full House, Just the 10 of Us and Sister Sister. This week’s curated two-hour block of programming will be dedicated to the spandex warriors of wrestling. Future nights promise painting with Bob Ross, MacGyver gadgetry demonstrations and much more.

To get you in the spirit, the Foundry kitchen will be serving up delicious house-made prepackaged TV dinners featuring meats, veggies, carbs and brownies. And for those looking for a friend, drinks will be served at the Foundry bar, where, hopefully, everyone will know your name.

Best & Worst of 2015 Welp, there it is, 2015 is now all but a memory. Before unwrapping our new wall calendar and focusing all mental energy on resolutions we’ll never keep, we decided to look back (with just the tiniest bit of anger) at the year that was. In no particular order, we give you the best & worst moments of 2015.

Nutter 1, Trump 0. Mayor Nutter called Donald Trump an asshole. ‘Nuff said.

Vaping. Your friends do it, your mom does it, your great-aunt does it. And everyone wants to tell you what flavor they’re smoking and how less dangerous than cigs it is. Nevermind how ridiculous they look and the mysterious ingredient list they’re puffing on.

Comcast not buying Time Warner. With media outlets being owned by an increasingly shrinking number of corporations [cough cough], Comcast’s withdrawal of its proposed purchase/merger of Time Warner was good news for consumers. Things are still bad, but they could have gotten a lot worse.

Final US Airways flight lands at PHL. And speaking of marketplace diversity, this happened.

And then there were four—major airlines that is. Good luck with checking bags for cheap.

The Parking Authority fines Uber ... big. It’s hard to say a good thing about the PPA, we know.

And it’s hard not to like UberX; it’s cheap, not discriminatory like taxi cabs can sometimes be and it’s always there when you need it. But UberX, the PPA alleges, has been operating illegally and without authorization.

And now they want to make Uber pay, to the tune of $330,000. More to come from both parties in 2016 no doubt.

Empire. It was in 2015 that the world was introduced to Lucious, Jamal, Anika and, of course, Cookie and her leopard prints.

HitchBOT made it across Europe and Canada, but of course, one stop in Philly and the long strange trip was suddenly all over and Hitch was headless. The ambassador robot from our neighbors to the North took a beating by some unknown vandals when he hit Philly.

Black Lives Matter Protests in Philly. Protesters brought the issue of excessive police force to Rittenhouse, taking the demonstrations into Devon Seafood Grill and the Apple store, among other locations this month. It was the last of several local protests by the group this year, with another set for the Mummers Parade.

TEDxPhiladelphia. This year, the speaking event dove into the concept of “And Justice for All” at the Temple Performing Arts Center, and with 14 accomplished speakers, we all left a wee bit smarter.

Ather Sharif. Congrats go to last year’s Geek Award winner for Geek of the Year, Sharif, who tirelessly works to make sure everyone can access the internet (when he’s not web developing, researching at his EvoXLabs and helping spinal cord injury patients lead more normal lives).

NBA worst start in history. We can’t even.

Jon Snow’s death. We just didn’t see it coming.

The Amtrak disaster. May’s Amtrak derailment was one of the worst days of the year and one of the worst tragedies to hit Philadelphia’s rail system.

Eight people died and more than 200 were injured and we still aren’t any closer to an answer on why it happened.

Kenney becomes mayor. We’re putting this in the best because we’re optimistic like that.

First Cheesesteak Festival is Held. Our question: why did it take this long for someone to organize one?

Police Hero Thrill ticket snafu. Hey, we gotta sell these tickets somehow!

South Philly gets a pier park. Pier 68 opened this fall. Decompress here after your shopping trip at the neighboring Walmart.

Wolf welcomes refugees. Imagine that, we weren’t an international embarrassment! Unlike Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Arizona, etc., PA’s governor said he would welcome Syrian refugees in a statement this past November.

Divine Lorraine’s makeover finally begins.

It’s been talked about for years, but this past September action began on converting the enormous abandoned North Broad landmark into new apartment buildings.

Vine Street construction. Sure they’re replacing structurally deficient bridges over the expressway, but the closures are a serious pain. And it’s not going to be completed until 2019.

Personal valet fails. Luxe was a great concept that we reported on a few months back. Sadly, them taking your car off your hands and parking it for just $20 a day was indeed too good to be true.

Independence Beer Garden. Returning for a second season, the Michael Schulson-run outdoor gastropub could have turned into a tourist trap to avoid, instead it’s becoming a summertime tradition.

City Paper RIP. We think its death sucked ass too.

PHS Pop-Ups didn’t disappoint. These days everyone has a pop-up. But, with PHS’s now in their fifth year, they show that experience counts. 15th & South streets and 9th & Wharton streets became pockets of urban beauty from spring through fall.

Sun sets on Locust Moon comic shop. The West Philly retail store might be closed, and that is a bummer, but Locust Moon press and their annual comic festival are alive and well.

SOUTH opens. The restaurant and jazz parlor gives Philly a new venue for its burgeoning jazz scene.

Zebras escape circus. Police had to chase down two runaway zebras in West Philadelphia in November. The bad news for the zebras, they got returned to the circus.

Seed Philly closes. It’s just sad when any startup incubator closes, and with it all the mighthave-been new businesses.

The Fillmore opens. Live Nation took the old AJAX building in Fishtown and transformed it from a warehouse to a stylishly grungy two-stage concert venue. How could this not be a good thing?

The urban grocery store crisis expanded.

The Bottom Dollar chain got sold and closed; Pathmark is on it’s way out. If you live in North Philly good luck finding a place to buy your bread, milk and eggs when it eventually snows.

Klondike dies. Born at the Bronx Zoo in 1980, Klondike the polar bear arrived in Philadelphia one year later and has remained a crowd favorite ever since. She was euthanized this fall after weeks of failing health, but survived to be the oldest polar bear in the country.

Philly Phaithful Mocks Trump. Alluding to the movement that began in the Twitter-sphere after Mayor Nutter criticized Trump’s proposed ban on Muslims, the local T-shirt biz quickly printed up a line of “Ban Trump from Philly” apparel.

PornGate. This story has it all: porn, racism, homophobia, twin sisters, alleged abuse of power, perjury—even Jerry Sandusky is somehow in the mix.

n just 18 years, Dark Star Orchestra has completely redefined the idea of a tribute band, bringing a Grateful Dead experience so rich and flawlessly recreated that they’ve even managed to surpass the original Dead’s career concert record of 2,318 shows, celebrating their 2,500th on November 18. They plan to bring that expert level excitement to Philadelphia, honoring the Dead’s tradition of bringing the New Year in with a bang with a twoday engagement at the Electric Factory on December 30 and 31. With an NYE allinclusive catering party, costume contest and accompanying performances from Cirque du Soleil, Dark Star Orchestra will showcase strange, engaging concert magic just short of the actual Dead.

Before they rock the house on Thursday and Friday, Philly Weekly caught up with keyboardist Rob Barraco.

Tell us about this tour.

We’re in Richmond, Virginia for two night and then Philadelphia for two nights. So it really is just our end of the year New Year’s run, four shows.

So what’s your process for choosing, how do you pick a Dead show to play? Do you all sit down together and pick a bunch of shows or do you pick show by show?

If we all sat down together to try to pick shows, we would probably end up in fistacuffs. (laughs) A long time ago it was deemed that our rhythm guitar player, Rob Eaton, would be in charge of picking the shows for tours. And what he does is he has a database of every show Dark Star has ever played in every city we’ve ever played. And what he does is, he’ll start with a random date and look at what we did in that particular town—so let’s just say Philly. He’ll look at what we’ve done in Philly for the last three, four times we’ve been there. than what we’ve done in the recent past.

And then he’ll start from there and he’ll go to the next night, and whatever city that was and look at what we did the last three or four times we were there and try to pick a show that’s different, that’s also different than the show we did the night before without having to repeat a lot of songs. So it’s a really arduous task and it takes him a couple of weeks to actually accomplish doing a whole tour worth of shows in order to craft a tour.

So when he’s picking shows, do you sort of stick to a certain era or could you be bouncing around from one show from the ‘70s to one show from the ‘80s?

That’s exactly right, every night is different. It’s rare that we would do two of the same era shows two nights in a row unless we’re doing a multiple-night run in a particular place and we do like consecutive shows. That’s what keeps it interesting for all of us and keeps it a challenge. So every night when I go on that stage I know that I have to do a completely different thing.

Now, that being said, once you get past the constraints of era-specific stuff, like the arrangements of the songs, stage set up, the particular instruments they were using, every note is improvised.

So you’re not transcribing a show and then recreating it note from note?

Can you only imagine how much time that would take? (laughs)

And it would probably lose the spirit.

Exactly! It’s antithetical to what the Grateful Dead was all about. The Grateful Dead was all about improv and I’ll listen to two shows from the same tour, especially like back in the ‘70s where they didn’t have a huge repertoire, they were repeating a lot of the same songs, and you listen to them and they’re all different. n

2015 in review

Memorable meals at Philly’s best restaurants.

M

y first restaurant review of 2015 was, appropriately enough, Lo Spiedo, and in hindsight it proved to be one of the more prescient meals I had this year.

From a stylistic standpoint, Vetri and Co.’s centerpiecing of the spit and the wood fire and all the rustic, deeply developed flavors they combine to develop signaled the continued importance among Philly chefs of focusing on great ingredients, and extracting as much flavor from them as possible—as opposed to overly manipulating the components of a dish in an attempt to transmogrify them into something they’re not.

Perhaps as a corollary to this, 2015 also marked a continued focus on meat. Kensington Quarters, with its on-site butcher shop and impeccable sourcing, has grown to become a staple among the city’s ever expanding coterie of passionate carnivores. It also, with the inception of its butchery-and-cooking classes, which we covered here not long ago, is stepping into the phenomenal range of food education options that our city offers. (In that regard, if you haven’t attended a class at Cook—at which I used to host monthly wine-focused events but don’t anymore— I highly recommend doing so.)

That focus on meat followed through to the end of the year, with the opening of Malbec in the former location of Society Hill Society, just off of Headhouse Square, and its meat-o-centric parillada of meat and sausage; as well as Urban Farmer, the much-anticipated modern steakhouse in the new Logan Hotel. It spreads out across the entirely reconfigured and re-imagined space that the Fountain occupied for so many decades. In addition to house-made charcuterie and locally sourced steaks, I found on Facebook the morning I wrote this piece that they are now offering Wagyu seared table-side.

Sounds phenomenal.

2015 was also the year that the humble chicken wing got its Zoolander turn.

Whetstone Tavern included them on its menu, either napped in a bourbon hot sauce or kung-pao style. The Fat Ham popped-up a whole additional wingy celebration around Labor Day, and after the response they got, began including an expanded selection of them on their menu as they celebrated their second anniversary. Korean fried chicken, considered by many to be one of the great expressions of wingitude, also found expanded favor this year at several spot around town, though my favorite KFCs, as reported here last week, were at South-

As a Jew with a love of Chinese food, this seemed to be the dish that much of my early eating life was building toward. I still think about it.

Just as it’s impossible to discuss the 2015 Philly food scene in its entirety, so, too, is it an effort in futility to consider its drinking life in one column: Yet again, we have proven to be one of the most remarkable cities in the country for cocktails, beer and wine. From the always-epic Philly Beer Week to the myriad Francis-themed specials that helped Philadelphians survive the much-feared and much-anticipated Pope-mageddon, our town’s bars are running at full stride.

In addition to so many others, the bar at Bud and Marilyn’s, with its retro cocktails, was notable this past year; and I recently had the chance to taste through a number of drinks at Palladino’s, which, under the new direction of Philip Search, has rolled out a selection of cocktails that are both delicious on their own and work well alongside the food that Chef Luke Palladino is crafting in the kitchen.

There’s just too much to cover: I haven’t even mentioned the biscuits at Scratch, or the magic being woven at Helm, or the stunning pies at Stargazy, or the recent rollout of Tredici, or Kanella South, or…

2015 was a deeply rewarding year of eating and drinking in Philadelphia. And with so many spots on the horizon, the new year promises to be every bit as remarkable. So don’t eat too much on New Year’s Eve—you’ll need every bit of appetite you have in 2016. n

am a 30-year-old straight man and I’ve been with a 28-year-old bisexual woman for a year. Early in our relationship, we established that it would be open. I would have the liberty to see other women and so would she. The key was that she agreed to see only other women. I was uncomfortable with the idea of her being with another man, and she went along with it. Fast-forward a few months, and she told me that she had drunkenly kissed a male coworker. Hearing her say that hurt me. However, since then she has explained to me that the rule that she can be only with women is unfair because she’s bisexual and she’s attracted to both men and women. After much soulsearching, I came around to her point of view and she now has the option to see men too.

My question: How do I deal with the jealousy and emotions that will come up when she does kiss another man? Or does even more with another man? We love each other, and I think it’s important to note that while we have both been on dates with other people, neither of us has had sex with someone else yet. —Having Emotional Reaction Means Asking Nervously “Hard Truth #1: Renegotiating is crucial to the survival of all long-term relationships— even more so in unconventional, customdesigned relationships where there’s no established template,” says Christopher Ryan, author of Sex at Dawn: How We Mate, Why We Stray, and What It Means for Modern Relationships. “And while I don’t see any unfairness in HERMAN’s girlfriend wanting to have the same freedom he has (to see whomever she wants), if he agreed to the open relationship on the condition that she ‘see only other women,’ then renegotiating is going to be difficult.”

Your description of that particular limitation—only other women—as “key” to opening up your relationship, HERMAN, left Ryan feeling less than optimistic.

“Hard Truth #2: It’s a time-wasting mistake to negotiate nonnegotiables,” says Ryan. “I’m not saying we shouldn’t be willing to learn and grow by trying new things.

But our first task is to ‘know thyself’ and take it from there. For example, if you’re certain you want or don’t want kids, then that shouldn’t be open to negotiation just because you met someone you like (or love) whose dreams go the other way.”

Assuming you’re willing to renegotiate, HERMAN, where do you start?

“Perhaps the question of why he’s more bothered by her being with men than women,” says Ryan. “Maybe he could ask her to set up a three-way with a man they both like so he can face the dragon, so to speak.

See if the flip side of his fear isn’t that he’s actually turned on by the thought of her

with other men. Lots to explore, once he’s certain he wants to explore it. But, again, if this is a nonnegotiable—if this really isn’t something HERMAN wants, despite his desire to be fair—it might be better to end the relationship than to attempt to be someone he’s not or agree to something he’ll never be at peace with.”

My partner and I have a DADT agreement in regards to extramarital relations. Sounds a little complicated, SDCS, and I’m not sure the market for your proposed app is big enough to attract investors. I also don’t think introducing a second potentially unreliable and/or sinister stranger into the mix is going to make your hotel hookups appreciably safer.

Here’s a better idea: Schedule a wakeup call for an hour or two after your Tinder rando is due to arrive. You can schedule wake-up calls for any time of day, SDCS, and in nicer hotels you can even ask the front desk to ring you personally instead of scheduling a robocall. Just tell the receptionist you’re a heavy sleeper and you need them to verify that you’re awake/ alive in time for your big meeting.

Or you could take a risk and confide in a friend about your open marriage, and your need for a safety buddy. n
