Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit T he Fabric Workshop and Museum ends the year with a bang, hosting “Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit,” a multi-medium exhibit dedicated to the memory of Marion “Kippy” Boulton Stroud, the late founder and Artistic Director of the Museum. Stroud was described by many who knew her as a visionary, founding both the FWM and the Acadia Summer Arts Program, affectionately known as “Camp Kippy.” In her long career, she introduced fabric as an art medium, rocking the foundation of the contemporary art world.

Her museum has been home to residences by artists such as Marina Abramovic, Donald Lipski and Louise Bourgeois. In its 38 years of existence, Kippy’s dream has made art history with more than 800 artist participants generating over 6,000 pieces of art.

The name “Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit” is a nod to the British supersti-

tion that repeating the word “rabbit” three times on the first of the month will bring good luck. The exhibition, and the art that is part of it, was completely organized and created by the FWM staff, and features the work of Kate Abercrombie, Patrick Smith, Andrew Perez, Shelby Donnelly, Petra Floyd, Carlos Avendaño and more. “‘Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit’ showcases the talent and creativity of its current staff,” says Stephanie Alison Greene, the Acting Managing Director and Head of Exhibitions and Publications at FWM, also noting that this is the first staff exhibition since 1997. —FRANCIS ELLISON

Love for the Broken Taryn Zychal turns your trash into crafty wonders.

I

f you see Taryn Zychal digging around city trash cans, don’t worry, she’s on a mission: to save broken umbrellas from their bleak landfill fate. Her Philly fashion label, Recycling Zychal, converts these broken ‘brellas into wearable accessories, from doggie jackets to hoodie hats. We caught up with Zychal to find out more about her negative waste crafting company.

Explain your negative waste model. How did you design a production model that allowed you to go into the negative on waste production?

Negative Waste is a concept that I developed to make my business as resourceful as possible. It’s beyond

Tell us a little about your background.

I moved to Philadelphia in 2004 for design school, so for about six months I lived in Center City in the dorms. I didn’t like the fact that I couldn’t have any pets in the dorms, so I moved to West Philly in 2005 …

From there I moved to the Italian Market, lived there for three years until I moved to South Philly, where I live now. I love South Philadelphia, and consider this area to be my home.

My background is in product and industrial design, although I was always interested in sustainability and environmentalism.

My education only amplified that, and I tailored my portfolio to reflect these concepts.

During college, I worked for Red Bull as a brand ambassador and got knee-deep in marketing, which I used later to build both my career and Recycling Zychal. I freelanced for a while and expanded my portfolio with graphic design and marketing work. In 2011, I took a managerial role for a brand new mid-century modern furniture store on East Passyunk Avenue and began professionally restoring beautiful vintage pieces, while also running the store, building the social media network and updating our inventory … I then went back to doing social media marketing and that’s what I do now on top of running Recycling Zychal.

It seems like you think about the smallest pieces of waste. Do you believe more people need to think about small scale waste to address it at a large scale level?

I absolutely do! All waste is waste, no matter how big or small. If you see the potential in a milk cap, start collecting them, when you get 50 of them, adhere them upside-down to something flat, put that next to your door and let it become a place to let your snowy shoes drain instead of going out and buying a mat designed to do that exact thing … The resources are abundant and free! If enough of us do that, the world will indeed change.

Do you feel a bit like you’re giving new life to an object by upcycling it?

I definitely do, which is why I deem my business with the slogan “rescue and repurpose of broken umbrellas.” I feel like I am rescuing this wonderful material and giving it a new purpose.

Everyone knows that umbrellas break, usually at the most inopportune time, it’s inevitable …

My dog coats do not fail, they will last a lifetime, they are designed to function for as long as they need to, properly and adorably. Since I started the company in 2008, I have only ever had one customer return a coat to me and it was because her dog had gained too much weight since she had originally purchased it and she wanted me to make an extension for the belly strap, which I did, of course, free of charge.

So you’ll take our broken umbrellas?

What led you to umbrellas?

One rainy night while walking to class, I spotted a broken teal umbrella … Shortly after, with no previous sewing skills whatsoever, I hot glued and handstitched together a rain coat for my dog, Jake, from this umbrella. My friends and colleagues caught wind of this and began helping me collect broken umbrellas every time it rained. Within a year, I had over 100.

I had no idea then what it would become. A magazine that is no longer in print, ReadyMade, which greatly influenced my upcycling path, held a contest every issue to turn a piece of trash into something functional and new. I submitted the coat and came in runner up. The editor contacted me and told me that they were receiving emails left and right asking where people could buy this item, so I started an Etsy in 2008. I was overwhelmed with orders and enlisted

idea when it comes to waste reduction. It’s not going to change overnight, but setting a good example by doing good will influence those around you. I never thought that I would have an actual business and over 2,000 broken umbrella nylons in my inventory when I started this. People have sent them to me from all over the world, the farthest coming from Perth, Australia. The day I got that package, I cried. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I made a video on how to strip and ship a broken umbrella domestically for about $2, and people are willing to pay that to see their broken umbrella go to good use, which amazes me, but also shows that people want to support small businesses and support change.

sustainability, it’s beyond zero waste. I wanted other companies to see that with a little planning and effort, you can take your waste and use them to create much more.

From every dog coat I make, I can also make up to four other products from the scraps … Currently, the largest scraps become hoods; the medium scraps become beverage cozies, sleeping masks and catnip filled cat toys; and the smallest scraps are used to stuff the cat toys, so literally nothing goes to waste.

Sometimes recycling and reusing can seem futile compared to the millions of pounds of waste going to landfills. What do you have to say about this?

I’m a firm believer in the idea that every little bit counts and looking at the big picture is not the best

Most definitely! How many ya got?

What’s next for you after umbrellas? Any other commonly discarded items come to mind?

I’d like to stick with the ‘brellas because it’s basically become my forte, and it’s something I’m starting to become known for! I can see myself messing around with other waste streams, but not for my business.

This past summer, I started a phenomenon within my group of friends by re-growing romaine lettuce from the often discarded heart stumps … If you aren’t familiar, the bottom part of a romaine heart that you usually throw away can be placed in a shallow dish on your window sill and after about a week, it will start to root and the leaves in the middle will start to grow. Tell us about the products you make from the umbrella fabric, the hats, the dog jackets, etc.

The dog raincoats are my foundation product, they are the bread and butter of Recycling Zychal. Aside from creating them to be extremely sustainable and lining them with eco-fi felt—which is made from recycled plastic bottles—I also wanted to custom make them so that people with a dog who doesn’t fit into the standard small, medium, large, etc., profiles could still get a coat that didn’t look dumpy on them. I get a lot of orders from people who own dachshunds, corgis, pugs, bulldogs, boxers even pitties that have eccentric shapes. I have the option of adding an insulation that is also made from recycled plastic bottles for winter coats, or smaller dogs that are always cold … The custom coats are available on my etsy store and I sell standard size coats exclusively at Amelie’s Bark Shop across from the Singing Fountain on East Passyunk Avenue.

The hood was originally an idea I had for myself as a way of being able to keep my hair dry when riding my bicycle around town in the rain. You can pull it really tightly around your head so you don’t have to worry about it blowing off your head when you’re flying down Chestnut Street from University City to Center City. A few of my friends asked for one for the same reason and before long, I was so comfortable with making them that I put them up on my Etsy site and they were an immediate hit.

ottstown’s KenCrest Creations sells a variety of products like scented candles, greeting cards and hot/cold packs for muscle pain, all crafted by individuals working through KenCrest, one of the largest providers of service to people who have, or are at risk of having, intellectual disabilities and autism in the Philadelphia area. The artisans are paid for any time they spend working on these products.

“They take a lot of pride and a lot of ownership in that work, and it’s not always an opportunity I think the people that we work with have had throughout their lives,” says Alli Smale, director of program services at KenCrest. “To be able to put their name on something, to be able to put their stamp on something and say, ‘I did that, that’s my work’ ... I think that’s definitely helped them to grow as individuals and hopefully helped them to feel a little bit more empowered.”

Tacha O’Neill, Pottstown resident and KenCrest Creations artisan, sells the program’s items at a kiosk in the Coventry Mall. She says seeing people purchase things that she helped create makes her happy.

The concept of KenCrest Creations was sparked after Jim Wilkins brought a business idea to KenCrest with him from a previous service program.

“They had begun this niche business in doing recycled paper products, so Jim showed us how it was done and it grew from there,” Smale says. “We owe it all to Jim.” KenCrest started producing items like greeting cards, gift bags and gift tags out of recycled paper. The process for making these products, which includes tearing pieces of paper and blending the scraps with the push of a button, allows people with severe physical disabilities like Wilkins to participate.

Later on, the program expanded to include a popular product, the scented soy-based KenCrest Kandles.

Smale says that the high quality and exceptional value of the candles attracted the attention of Keller Williams Realty. KenCrest Creations worked with the company to develop a candle with a signature scent to be used during open houses.

The Creations program also helps individuals reach their full artistic potential in fields like painting and drawing. Professional art instructors like Jean Esther teach in 10-week sessions and work with seven artists at a time, where they learn techniques like perspective, foregrounds and backgrounds, mixing colors and how to properly hold a paintbrush. The aspiring artists must pay to take these classes, but KenCrest holds three to four art exhibitions per year where artists have the chance to sell their work for reasonable prices.

“When a piece sells, either that artist receives the cash directly or they receive a check written out in their name for the full price of the painting,” Smale says. “KenCrest takes nothing from that. We also don’t exhibit anywhere that they take a percentage of the income.”

What’s been the reaction? Has Philly supported you?

Philadelphia has been very supportive of my endeavors. I couldn’t think of a better place to call Recycling Zychal’s homebase. People don’t question me digging through trash to fish out a fabulous broken umbrella. In fact, I have had people ask what I’m doing and then start helping me! I’ve had support from Temple University students, residents, local businesses and publications. In 2011, I was presented with a Keep America Beautiful award by Mayor Nutter and Miss America. It was one of the most incredible accomplishments of my entire life. As long as Philadelphians keep breaking umbrellas, I will keep on rescuing them. I truly can’t imagine a better city to have started and built this business in; thank you Philadelphia, I love you! n

Chris Rose of Spring City is a KenCrest Creations artist. He says his four years with the program have helped him to develop new techniques and inspired him to paint everything from Cookie Monster to caricatures of the KenCrest staff to beautiful oceanic landscapes. At the next exhibition, Rose hopes to display the comic series he has been working on, which he dreams will one day become an animated TV show.

Smale hopes the Creations program will eventually lead to meaningful full-time employment for the people she works with.

“As our customer base grows, as our product lines grow, we’re hoping to provide more and more of these opportunities so that we can really have an in-house workforce for KenCrest Creations,” she says. “They’ll have regular jobs, just like you and me.” n

Finger Pickin’ Good Ladybird give Philly homey harmonies all year long.

he West Philly roots trio Ladybird has been bringing its rich sounds to local house concerts and music venues for several years now. We caught up with Anna Cecilia, Laura Kay and Sarah Williams before a recent show at Dawson’s to find out more about their homespun sound.

People see the banjo and they right away think, “Oh it’s a bluegrass band.”

Laura: We’re not a strict bluegrass band though.

Sarah: Laura is a banjo player all her own, she’s got the coolest style!

How would you describe it?

Laura: My style? I try to add a delicate touch to it. A lot of times with the bluegrass banjos, it’s like a very powerful instrument. I like to be delicate and keep in mind the tone.

Sarah: She’s got a really nice textural approach. She creates a texture that Cecilia’s voice sits on top of really nicely. Cecilia has this really beautiful honey kind of voice and Laura, when she’s playing the banjo she’s got like a really nice pattern you don’t really hear in bluegrass because she’s self-taught.

PW: How did you ladies first get together?

Cecilia: Laura and I both knew Sarah on our own and...

Sarah: Yeah I met the two of them in different veins of the West Philadelphia music scene. Which is really vibrant and lively and there’s all different characters.

So I had met them through different avenues. Cecilia through the jazz road and Laura through also kind of jazz but more so folk and house concerts.

And how long have you guys been together?

Sarah:

We’re into our third year. Cecilia is a full time musician, I’m a full time musician and Laura is a brilliant brain scientist. She’s like so smart.

Laura: Yeah I hadn’t been playing out as much as you guys, but I did instrumentals, like finger-style guitar and that’s how I kind of got involved.

Cecilia: I work at a neurology practice.

Sarah: And Laura and I met, I was playing a house show

Sarah: We play as much as we can as a trio. Cecilia has a great jazz band she plays with. Laura does some solo gigs.

in West Philly and she told me “oh I play guitar” and I thought “oh that’s really interesting” and I kind of filed it in my little file cabinet of a brain and then Cecilia and I met through jazz and I don’t even know where we met the first time. I knew them through different avenues and I was planning on moving out of town and I thought I’d throw myself a big going away party and I asked them if they wanted to come play some songs with me and do solo sets as well, because I wanted to have this evening of all of this music. And I thought this would be really cool because I play with boys all the time and I’ll play with all girls now. So we set that up and we had so much fun and we got offered a gig two days later.

Laura: Sean Hoots from Hoots & Hellmouth was there and he told us that he got offered a gig at The Fire and he was like “Well I can’t do it, but this group just formed in front of me. I think they should do it.”

Sarah: Sean has been a little bit like our fairy godfather in a way and he’s given us a lot of help. And that’s just the Philly music community, everyone is willing to help each other out.

Laura: And that community is really important. For me, I had a dobro lying around, like a slide guitar. I only played it for my own instrumental stuff. And then when we first got together, Sarah was like “You have to play these bluegrass songs on that!”

Sarah: I literally saw it sitting in her bedroom the first time we got together and I was like “That’s a dobro! You play that now, go on, get it out!” (laughs)

Laura: So as we started playing more and I started playing dobro more, and later I got introduced to banjo and it kind of got my whole finger picking style down with fast picking. The community is so important. Everyone is so supportive, especially in bluegrass and folk communities here. They’ll show you things. Sarah: The first time Laura was playing the dobro, I was like “All my friends who play dobro can also play banjo so I called up my banjo friend from the Corn Pickers who also plays dobro and was like “Hey, can I borrow your banjo? I’m going to give it to my friend and she’s going to learn how to play.” And they’ve been a band that really love Ladybird and helped us out a lot and we’re really lucky to have those guys as friends.

Is the bluegrass scene thriving in Philly?

Everyone: Yes! Sarah: There’s a couple of things that happen regularly in town for Bluegrass music that people go to and they go every week or every month. First Friday of every month there’s a big Bluegrass Jam that happens at The Institute in Spring Garden and then The Jersey Corn Pickers have their First Wednesday residency at Bourbon and Branch.

That was packed, I played it this past month solo and it was just slammed. So people go. And we’re right between D.C. and Delaware and New York City so there’s kind of this convergence on Philly of like these New York school cats who really play and then like the guys from Delaware and we just come together in Philly.

Cecilia:

We always have had a hard time with people identifying us that way. We’re not Bluegrass entirely.

Sarah: I thought about that actually. Today when I was teaching, one of my students was getting a little virtuoso attitude going, a little bit too diva and I was said “All the greatest athletes play on teams at some point in their life.

All the greatest musicians play with other musicians at some point. Just because you want to be you, doesn’t mean you can’t add to the people around you.” And that’s something that happens for us because we all come from such different backgrounds. Laura is self-taught, Cecilia was raised by folk musicians in Sweden and has like this huge jazz knowledge and I come from this classical background, like this good girl gone bad that I play folk and country now.

And you played Folk Fest this year?

Sarah: We did. It was great. But I don’t think I’m going to camp next time. It was so hot and sweaty. It was so actually so hot my fiddle came unglued.

Any advice for female musicians on the local scene?

Laura: There’s so many great bands right now. I’ve never had a bad experience with someone.

Cecilia: I think there is something to be said for playing your music with other women. We all collaborate with guys a lot and are always on stage with guys and that’s great. But there’s something unique about being on stage with other women.

Laura: Communication on stage is completely different.

Sarah: We’re all having fun and we’re really good at communicating together. n

Southgate serves some damn fine chicken. ore and more lately, I find myself daydreaming about fried chicken.

I mean, I always did—but these days, thoughts of properly fried chicken legs and thighs and wings take up a whole lot more of my personal bandwidth than I ever would have imagined. Because, I think, so many great versions are available.

And I’ve been taking it personally, too. A few weeks ago, for instance, I was standing in line at Southern, a justifiably popular St. Louis hot-chicken destination, and when the guy behind me asked another member of his crew if they knew if he could order a boneless skinless breast, or even a chicken tender, I had to restrain myself from punching him in the neck. Because really, if you only like white-meat fried chicken, and sans bone at that, then you don’t really like fried chicken, period. Also, there’s a good chance that you have serious issues with all kinds of self-hatred. But that’s another story altogether.

So, yeah: Fried chicken has been playing an outsized role in Freedmanville lately.

Which means that the morning of the night I recently went to Southgate, I awoke like a child on Hanukkah or Christmas morning, all electric with fidgety energy. I had heard so much about their riff on “KFC,” and from people I trust, that I could barely eat that day—I wanted to save room, and I was too excited.

It’s damn fine chicken: That much is unarguable. The team at Southgate has gotten the texture exactly right, the moist wing meat practically dripping within a shell of double-fried goodness so crunchy you’d be forgiven for thinking that the good lord on high had fried it himself. (Note: I’m pretty sure he laughs at people who only like white-meat chicken. Tenders, too.) And both versions, the soy garlic and the spicysweet gochujang, managed that uniquely Korean-fried-chicken trick of liberally coating the carapace with sauce yet not losing the slightest bit of its snappiness. I definitely preferred the latter for its depth and clarity of flavor, and the former could have been half a step less liquid in texture and maybe a full step less sweet, but both were excellent embodiments of why this particular preparation is seeing such a moment.

Honestly, you could easily make a night of just those wings and leave perfectly happy. Start off with a cocktail—the citrusbright and persimmon-infused rye of the P and P was a thoroughly pleasant way to start things off, as was the old fashioned referencing Old Boy, lent added heft by a Laphroaig spritz—order that KFC of Love, and you’re good to go.

But to do so would mean you’d miss all sorts of other pleasures, like the Korean sweet potato fritters, happy little pucks all comforting and poppable (whether or not you utilize the sweet chili dipping sauce—

and you really don’t need to.) Or the tuna hwe dup bap, like a cross between a supremely refreshing summertime salad studded with gem-like cubes of raw tuna, and a bibimbap minus the hot stone bowl. I’d have liked it even more had there been a bit more acid to frame all the disparate components— pickled ginger, daikon, carrots, hearts of romaine, avocado and rice, tossed together with chojang—but it was a nice break from all the excellent fried dishes, and definitely worth checking out.

So, too, is the chicken katsu, which one of the friends who joined us for the meal said reminded him of a particularly wellcrafted Israeli schnitzel. The thinness of the meat and the expert application of the crust (panko in this case, so it’s not really like Israeli schnitzel exactly, but his comparison I think is absolutely accurate) meant that each bite found its ideal balance of crisp and tender. I alternated between bites of the katsu and the phenomenal spicy and funky side of kimchi we ordered, and was very, very happy. The katsu-accompanying cabbage slaw, swirled up with sesame dressing, could be eaten by the bucketful. My only vague letdown was the Korean BBQ beef tacos, which, while plenty tasty, were dominated too assertively by the gochujaru mayo squiggled on top, and ginger-, soy-, and scallion-marinated beef that was cooked just a touch too long.

Cuisine type: Korean gastropub But that’s a quibble. Because overall, Southgate accomplishes everything it sets out to do. It’s a comfortable neighborhood bar and restaurant with an appealing design sensibility. The service is helpful and attentive. And the crowds, both local and from other parts of the city, seem to have really bought into what they’re doing. Which they should. This is the Korean “gastropub” that the neighborhood needs right now.

I ended my recent meal there with a persimmon misugaru, which riffed on the flavors of the drink of the same name, and which was lent weight and a sense of nuttiness by the use of an assortment of grains in the shortcake-like composition. Against the lemon- and vanilla-candied persimmon crowning it all, it embodied so much of what owner Peter Hwang and chef Clara Park and their team are doing so right: Exotic yet somehow familiar, exciting and comforting at the same time. And, of course, that chicken, particularly the gochujang version.

I now have one more dish to add to my rotation of poultry fantasies. And plenty of other stuff, too. n

Seven Rants for Episode VII WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD

I

f you’re like the millions of Americans who went to see Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens over the past six days then you won’t mind us revealing how things went down. If you didn’t see the film yet then don’t read this, or just quit pretending you care and read it like the true non-fan that you are. Here are some of my skewed observations on the J.J. Abrams blockbuster, because, you know, it really isn’t getting much media coverage.

1. Fin is awesome. He’s just what we needed from Disney’s newest Star Wars, a non-white hero who is downto-earth and can throw in a sincerely funny one-liner.

Props for not going with the hunkiest, most finely built stormtrooper either. Fin’s got the regular Joe look that we can all connect with. That stormtrooper body armor though... Heavy duty plastic doesn’t protect much from blaster fire, but it also looks like it’d be a bitch to fit into with extra holiday weight.

2. Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) infused a new kind of sexy into the Sith. That said, his scenes with Rey (Daisy Ridley) did two things for me: 1. I’m not sure if it was his facial expressions or his slight resemblance to David Schwimmer, but at times when Ren is using his sinister mind reading force-bility on Rey, it felt like Ross being awkward with Rachel.

2. So their names are similar and it appears they’ve both been genetically gifted with the Force. And here I thought I was the only one feeling a little Luke and Leia brother/sister tension going on... but apparently it’s not such a revelation. Now, are they cousins? Is Rey Luke’s love child? Does that make it less creepy?

3. The First Order is scary as hell.

Although George Lucas has always made allusions to the Third Reich in costuming and portrayal of The Empire, Force Awakens takes it to a new level. I would like to say this however about the bad guys: Wouldn’t it be great to see a Star Wars movie that explicitly shows how the bad guys justify their actions and think they’re more “the good guys.” Too often in these “good vs. bad” duels, the bad guys are just that bad, they could be carrying around a big sign that says “I’m a big psychotic meanie.” But as we know in the real world, things are way more subtle and veiled than that. Oh I forgot Donald Trump. Okay, forget what I said about nuisance.

P.S. Thank you casting department for putting Domhnall Gleeson into the role of General Hox and giving my ginger fetish someone to latch onto even while hating his guts.

4. Are old people not allowed to kiss? Did Abrams think our eyes would bleed if the sexiest AARP couple of Han Solo and General Organa were allowed to kiss?

Alright maybe the story didn’t call for it, but it would’ve been great to see. Both actors however did show why they made the original movies such a hit. The parent/ child crisis with Kylo/Ben was an emotional highlight of this epic, even if it ended badly. That’s as far as I can go in discussing that scene at this point in my stages of grief.

5. BB-8 is one cool m----f---a. Think of how hard it is to get you to feel something for a beachball with a microwave warming dish balanced on top of it. But you did, didn’t you?

6. This felt like an extended trailer for Episode VIII. There I said it. I’m slightly disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, the film wasn’t boring, it didn’t have Jar Jar Binks reemerging (for now) as was threatened throughout cyberspace, and lines were less hokey than the prequels. But I felt like the new additions lacked depth. My parting memories are that it was a lot of fight scenes without much plot. Some Clone Wars episodes have had deeper plots. Yes, I went there.

The bigger badder Death Star aka Starkiller Base?

Yawn. The original Death Star was awesome because it was that: ORIGINAL! “That’s no moon. That’s a space station!” That moment was shocking because it was a surprise. Many elements in Force Awakens felt like fan fiction (my apologies, ff’ers!). It didn’t really bring new stuff to the table more so than reimagined or paid homage to past elements. Think of what was introduced in Episodes V and VI: Walkers, Jabba and a Tauntaun sleeping bag. Even Episode I gave us Darth Maul and Queen Amidala’s headpiece. Here in Force, we’ve got a bigger Death Star, a slimmer Darth Vader, and a rounder R2.

7. Snoke. Another old Sith Master? Can I just say this: I hate the name. It doesn’t have the evil elegance of a Palpatine or Plagueis. It’s just Snoke. Kinda like snot, and Snorks. Snorks don’t scare me, I used to wake up early on Saturday mornings to watch them. Of course way more will be revealed in upcoming episodes about this road-worn hologram, but for now, what you see in Force is what we have to go on. And really, aside from having less flair, how different from Darth Sidious is he? n
