KERITH GABRIEL
ast week, Independence Blue Cross CEO Dan Hilferty penned a full-page Inquirer ad entitled, Let’s get Healthcare Right, A Message of Hope. There were things in the letter I agreed with and some I vehemently questioned. I was going to take this week to bring up that ad and make some points, but this week I don’t have to. About a day after the ad came out, I received this Letter to the Editor, from former congressional hopeful Larry Arata, which expressed a lot of the concerns I had — but added a point I didn’t even factor in: health care’s role for those battling addiction. Dear Dan, It was with mixed feelings that I read your expensive full page ad in the Inquirer, “Let’s Get Healthcare Right, A Message of Hope. I certainly agree that both political parties should work together to provide access to affordable health insurance to all. As you said, this is a “moral obligation. However, I am convinced that instead of your suggestion of “using the power of our free enterprise system to provide competition and choice for all, the “distinctly American solution must provide a federal government plan to compete with the private insurance companies in every market nationwide. Only a Medicare for all option will force private health insurance companies to cover best practices medical care for affordable premiums. I am not calling for mandating a single payer / governmentonly system. My favorite proposal, which some Democrats introduced in 2009, is that private companies must compete with a governmentprovided option for every citizen’s coverage. If they can’t, they will fade away and a single payer system will evolve. Ideally, the power of this hybrid system will encourage improved coverage at lower prices and both public and private coverage plans will remain viable options to everyone nationwide. Furthermore, if you are sincere in your attempt to craft “a message of hope, you must immediately change your illegal coverage policies for those suffering from substance use dis-
3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20
order. The Federal Parity Act of 2008 dictates that the mentally ill and addicted are entitled to best practices medical care just as medical / surgical patients. End the unnecessary, wasteful, stressful and deadly seven-day review process and provide coverage for best medical practice long term care. Everyone knows that no one reaches recovery in 7, 14, 21 or even 28 days. Most experts agree a continuum of at least 90 days of care is most often required to reach remission. This policy change will not only save lives but also money by drastically decreasing deadly and expensive relapses that are so prevalent with shorter-term treatment regimens. “Providing hopeâ€? also means that Independence Blue Cross must also cover medicationassisted treatment regimens. Research indicates this approach is up to 300 percent more effective than abstinence-only treatment in preventing deadly and costly relapses. It is not only illegal, but immoral that your ďŹ rm does not cover FDA-approved and scientiďŹ cally-proven effective medications in treating addiction. My son, Brendan, who died last year at 23 of a heroin overdose after remaining clean and sober for over 90 days, was denied coverage by IBC when he reported to a treatment facility because he feared succumbing to urges to relapse. IBC and other private insurance companies have turned ASAM criterion on its head by misinterpreting the edict that if a patient reports to a facility requesting treatment while intoxicated, he or she cannot be denied treatment. They have implemented a deadly and immoral policy that if a patient reports to a facility requesting treatment while sober, he or she is not entitled to treatment. That is no way to enable your policy holders to “live fearless.â€? This is not a Brendan story, but a common one I heard across the region as I ran for Congress last spring. As you know, I presented these reform recommendations to your senior management team in March and have been denied any further communication with IBC. 74 candidates from both parties running for ofďŹ ce in PA this past year also endorsed this policy platform. As you said, let’s work together to get healthcare right! - Larry Arata, Philadelphia

There is a bill currently being mulled in City Council that would actually help squatters kick you out of your home for an extended period of time. According to an op-ed penned by City Councilman David Oh in the Inquirer earlier this week, Bill No. 180741 creates loopholes to an existing bill that would allow you to remove a squatter from your home via police from almost immediately to roughly half a month. Stories of people going away and coming home to ďŹ nd their locks changed and someone living inside their home is not unique and, according to the law, if they have proof they’ve lived in that house, something so insigniďŹ cant as a piece of mail addressed in their name, then there’s a process to remove the individual. This new bill would create backdoor channels to the Criminal and DeďŹ ant Trespassers Law that currently allows for expedited removal from a home to making both people have to prove their story. To which we say, wow.

The date of this current issue and also the date disgraced Attorney General Kathleen Kane has to turn herself in to state custody after a lengthy appeal process to overturn perjury and other convictions were not overturned. Kane has to report to Montgomery County Correctional Facility to begin serving a minimum 10-month sentence. It should be noted if she went into jail at the time she was convicted in October 2016 on that same minimum sentence, Kane would have already have been out for well over 10 months.

For you single people out there who are also devout fans of the fast food chain Hardee’s, consider the next few weeks your lucky day. In what may be hands down the dumbest promotion we’ve heard of in quite some time, it’s still one that’s so weird, we’d be fools not to share it. If you use the social matchmaking app Tinder, then you have a chance to land on Chris P., a chicken strip dressed as a real dude. Land on him and swipe right, and receive a buy one, get one offer on a ďŹ ve-piece chicken strip meal at Hardee’s through Dec. 9. We are not making this shit up. It appears Chris P. isn’t for straight guys or lesbian dolls as the company didn’t create a Kristy P., Christine P. or Kristin P. to service you, but we’re guessing Chris P. here doesn’t discriminate on a good time or on a chance for you to earn free chicken. 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

Semantics, Jared... Jared Kushner is long gone from the days of once owning the Piazza in Northern Liberties, this dude is out here breaking major deals with Mexico. Earlier this week, Kushner completed a new North American trade deal between the United States, Canada and Mexico, a deal that earned him Mexico’s Order of the Aztec Eagle, the highest honor granted to a civilian. Some think the idea of awarding Kushner, whose father-in-law, Donald Trump, has been adamant about literally building a divide between both countries, was an act of “cowardice on the part of the Mexican government. In true Trump f a m i l y form, busting up the current deal meant a complete change of the name. What was once known as the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, has been renamed the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA. You may now commence eye roll, please.

This fall, sports radio shock jock Angelo Cataldi bid farewell to his beloved Wing Bowl competition after 26 years of debauchery, degenerates and of course, deep fried chicken wings. With the Eagles winning the Super Bowl last season, Cataldi and Co. decided there was no reason to continue the celebration, with some not knowing whether they love the decision by the folks at SportsRadio WIP (94.1-FM) or detest it.

The entire exhibit was designed and constructed by the world renowned artist inside a Kensington warehouse in which we were granted a sneak peek. The finished product? Equality for all regardless of color, creed or sexual orientation is always the mantra at the scores of protests Philadelphia has seen over the past two years on the wake of the election of President Donald Trump and in the face of some of his most devout supporters earlier this month, that notion was expressed yet again. In this photo, a counter protester at the We the People rally on Independence Mall made sure to let everyone know just where Philadelphia stood on the issue of LGBTQ+ equality.

With a new role as head of the school board for the Philadelphia School District, Joyce Wilkerson is all smiles as her predominant goal is to push for more funding from the state to go into Philly schools that need it the most. It should be noted that Wilkerson was also head of the city’s School Reform Commission which dissolved and made way for the creation of the school board. It’s a wait and see approach what Wilkerson and the other eight board members can do to benefit both schools and students with an estimated budget of $966 million over the next five years.

Beautiful in its simplicity, there’s arguably only a handful of streets in town more iconic than Jewelers Row during the holidays. While the block lights up at night – sans jewelry as window dressing – during the day is just as nice and a clear sign that it’s the holiday season in Philadelphia. If we’re talking streets, in addition to Jewelers Row, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention 1600 block of 13th Street in South Philly and Greeby Street in the great Northeast.

Fighting for years Iconic film Philadelphia celebrates 25 years, and the fighting spirit of its last HIV positive extra BY ANDREA CANTOR
M
ore than 50 people with HIV/AIDS were cast from the local health network ActionAIDS, now branded Action Wellness, as extras in the groundbreaking 1993 ďŹ lm Philadelphia. Today, only one survives. Sue Kehler, 54. “I am so happy to be alive, but I have survivor’s guilt,â€? revealed Kehler, who made a pact with a few of the extras they would all live to be treated with the cure for HIV/AIDS, a discovery still not found. “I ask myself ‘Why me?...Why just me?’â€? Kehler was a special guest at the Philadelphia Film Center on Nov. 26 for its 25th anniversary celebration of Philadelphia and the screening of a new short documentary The Last Mile. Presented by (RED) and The CocaCola Company, and in recognition of World AIDS Day on Dec. 1, the The Last Mile bridges the American story’s ďŹ ght against HIV/ AIDS through the lens of Philadelphia with the ongoing crisis in Africa, particularly SubSaharan Africa. Back in the ‘90s, Philadelphia made headway for being one of the ďŹ rst Hollywood ďŹ lms to discuss the HIV/AIDS epidemic, homosexuality and homophobia. Centering on a HIVpositive, gay lawyer who sues his former law ďŹ rm for wrongful termination, Philadelphia is also largely remembered for its all-star cast, none of whom were present at the event. The bill included Tom Hanks, who earned one of the two Oscars the ďŹ lm received, Denzel Washington, Antonio Banderas, Jason Robards and Mary Steenburgen. But behind the big names were people like Kehler, the real victims of the highly stigmatized and deadly condition, which is now manageable with modern medication. Kehler recalled the excitement and camaraderie among those infected with the virus on the set of Philadelphia. She particularly remembers Hanks saying he would play a part in the movie based off the book she was and still is writing, a project delayed due to her symptomatic and debilitating joint pain. But even with the good memories of working on the ďŹ lm set, the time is still plagued with death and discrimination. Against the wishes of many in her family, Kehler announced her HIV-positive status by way of taking on the role in Philadelphia. Subsequently, a coworker at the bank Kehler worked at had her desk
moved, fearing she would catch the illness. Even last year, Kheler said she experienced the same type of bigotry and ignorance when a friend yelled at her child after trying to drink from Kehler’s cup at dinner. Kheler said her friend was clearly worried that her child could “catchâ€? the human immunodeďŹ ciency virus (HIV) through saliva − which is false. In an abusive relationship with a man who was an IV drug user, Kehler contracted HIV when she was just 22. She eventually found out her diagnosis when showing symptoms while pregnant with a baby girl who would be stillborn. “They did test after test, all tests were negative. Finally, they said they were going to do a test for HIV to rule it out,â€? said Kehler, who was unaware of her partner’s past drug use. “The results came back, and a family physician at the time said ... ‘I don’t know how to tell you this, and I am so sorry but your tests came back positive for the AIDS virus.’â€? From the upper-middle class suburbs of Lower Merion, Kehler’s “world was turned upside downâ€? and irrevocably changed. “I didn’t even know what that meant other than that I had less than a month to live,â€? explained Kehler. But she did live. Now residing in the Northeast, Kehler is one of the approximate 18,976 people living with HIV in Philadelphia, according to AIDSVu. Based on 2017 reports, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) lists Pennsylvania as one of the top 10 states for new HIV cases. “We have obviously come a long way, in terms of what Tom Hanks’ character [in Philadelphia] lived through and ended up dying of – HIV,â€? reected Kevin Burns, executive director of Action Wellness. “That’s no longer the case or no longer needs to be the case. The big challenge that we face is getting people to be tested, to know their status, to get treatment if they need it and to stay connected with treatment.â€? Burns was one of the panelists during Philadelphia’s 25th anniversary event, which also included Director of Partnerships at (RED) Meaghan Condon and The Last Mile director Kim Snyder, and was moderated by actor Keiynan Lonsdale. The conversation among panelists centered strongly on The Last Mile, which follows the story of Veronica Martins JosĂŠ, a health worker in the Zambezia Province in Mozambique who brings medicines to those infected with malaria and HIV/AIDS.

Clips of Philadelphia and associated commentary from the ďŹ lm’s stars and writer Ron Nyswaner are interspersed throughout the featurette. “When Coke approached us with this idea, it felt like a no-brainer for us to pursue it,â€? said Condon of (RED), a nonproďŹ t that partners with brands to ďŹ ght the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa. “[Philadelphia] showed audiences that we are not so different after all, whether you are gay or straight, positive or negative, we all have the right to a healthy, happy life. It was bridging that Philadelphia story to some of the work that we are doing today, in places like Mozambique.â€? Needless to say, using the success of Philadelphia as a way to highlight the ongoing devastation in Africa where approximately 1
million people die from AIDS-related illnesses each year was no easy task. “It was really challenging, commemorating the past of this incredible ďŹ lm 25 years later, Philadelphia, and looking at how far we’ve come and looking at how much work still needs to be done,â€? said director Snyder, known for her 2016 documentary Newtown about the 2012 mass shooting that killed 20 elementary school children and six educators. “Finding this incredible, modern-day story in the far reaches of Africa, it is very different than the Philadelphia story. But in some ways, they share the a sense of self-empowerment.â€? To watch The Last Mile, go to red.org/cocacola. Q TWITTER: @ANDREAJCANTOR

The laughter we need 1812 Productions’This Is The Week That Is finally earns long overdue praise BY ANDREA CANTOR uperstition may peg 13 as the unluckiest of numbers, but 1812 Productions 13th season of its annual political satire This Is The Week That Is seems to be its best year yet. Opened on Nov. 28, with a run through Jan. 5, the show has picked up national attention before curtain call. Founder of the Tony Awards, American Theatre Wing has commissioned the theatrical company to produce a short documentary of the show for its “Working In the Fieldâ€? series. The documentary is set to release next spring. In a mashup of “Carol Burnett meets SNL’s ‘Weekend Update,’â€? the show presents rehearsed sketch comedy and newly created material inspired by daily local and national news. “The show is getting more attention this year because it has been so difďŹ cult politically. No matter what your politics are, you can’t deny that there has been tragedy after tragedy after tragedy,â€? said Jennifer Childs, 1812 Productions co-founder and producing artistic director. “It has been a really difďŹ cult news cycle. I think there is interest in how on earth we are going to make it funny.â€? Borrowing its name from the 1960’s British variety television show, the 1812’s production of This Is The Week That Is started in 2006. Through its various iterations, rotating around three presidencies, none has provided such an abundance of creative headlines for the Philly company to use as the current Trump administration. “One of the things we try to do with this show is that we don’t try to ignore what’s go-
S
ing on or play around it,â€? explained Childs. “We really embrace that there is a lot of bad news in the world and we are really exhausted and angry and sad, so let’s ďŹ nd our way to something joyous together.â€? So while President Trump acts as a main course on the table of political comedy, rest assured or forewarned, said Childs, the sixmember cast are “equal opportunity political offenders.â€? In addition to co-directing with Dan O’Neil, Childs also has been playing the role of Patsy since the show’s inception. “She’s more famous than I am,â€? said Childs of her politically outspoken, in her thick South Philly accent, creation. Taking on a life of her own, Childs explained that Patsy has done work for radio station WHYY and the local Mummers. A South Philly resident herself, Childs said Patsy “is created out of love.â€? Through the thickly coated humor that is Patsy, Childs explained the character also brings the “wisdomâ€? of many of the neighborhood’s women. This Is The Week That Is has become a yearly tradition for a number of comedy seekers, according to Childs. But the mastermind behind the political hodgepodge of entertainment said new or old, this year’s run provides an extra dose of comedic relief. “Right now, there is so much negative in the world and there is so much divisiveness,â€? said Childs. “Laughter is actually something that unites us.â€? Historic Holidays in Old City
Presented by Old City District, this is a celebration of all things holiday and historical. America’s most historic square mile will transform before your very eyes into its own triumphant holiday market, including a window decorating contest for the more competitive among us. Philly MET Grand Re-Imagining If there’s one thing Philly knows, it’s culture. It just so happens that, within the cozy conďŹ nes of the City of Brotherly Love, we have our own special brand of green-bleedin’, cheese whiz-drenched, liberty ďŹ rst, last and always kind of culture. It’s a culture that doesn’t ask the same question twice. That puts pomp in its rightful place collecting mothballs at the back of the closet. Our culture is our own. It’s unique. It’s tough. It’s down-to-earth. And as cheesy as it sounds, it’s, well ‌ Gritty. And so, unlike most other major cities, when we renovate one of our oldest and most storied buildings, we don’t just do it so it can be a pretty, overproduced monument to all the hoity toity nonsense none of us ever actually want to do. No, we do it so we can go see hometown boy Kurt Vile rip a few sing-talk songs. Or so we can catch a cabaret before we head to Chinatown for some pillowy pockets of vegetables and dough. So we can live our lives like always, celebrating the exceptional while embracing the everyday. So while the historic Philly Metropolitan Opera House, set to re-open as The Met Philadelphia, a 110,000-square-foot, 3,500-seat, state-of-the-art music venue, of course includes things like “fanciful woodwork decorating the ceiling and stage frame, and a dramatic curtain draping the performance area,â€? what really matters is that the $56 million restoration went toward restoring a Philly feature to prominence, a Philly favorite, a becoming beacon of the sort only a city with blue collar ethics and white collar capabilities could create. It’s ladies night, and we’re feelin’ right, oh yes it’s ladies night (oh what a night). If you don’t get that reference, then we’re not really sure what to say. The Internet
On the one hand, it does seem a little presumptuous for a band to call themselves “The Internet. Like, the Internet with a capital “I is already a thing. A pretty huge thing, in fact, that dominates our daily lives. So when you name your band for that very same thing, you certainly seem to be saying something about your talent, your music and, perhaps more importantly, your staying power as a cultural entity. Or, as is the case with this band, it comes about as a joke. Fortunately for them, the joke – and the music – are really fucking good. | 8pm. $32.50. The Fillmore. 29 E. Holiday Garden Railway Nights
We’ve always wondered what, exactly, the connection between miniature train sets and holiday decorations is. Where the nexus point between tiny locomotives and evergreens doused in electricity lies. Maybe it’s as simple as toy trains once being a present, which of course sits nestled ever so gently beneath the tree. The logical next step, we guess, is for the train to then be part of the decorations. Does that make sense? We don’t know. Probably, it’s just a product of clever marketing by some suit-clad, whiskey-clutching Don Draper-wanna be, which really kinda steals away some of the magic. | 4:30pm. Prices vary. We’ll be honest – we don’t know what a butterbear bath bomb actually is. Like, of course we know what a bath bomb is. ’m a 30-year-old, Asian American, heteroexible cis woman. I’m also newly diagnosed with bipolar II. I’m on medication – the doctor is trying to ďŹ gure that out – but no talk therapy for right now, as my last therapist wasn’t great and I haven’t managed to ďŹ nd a new one. I equate risk with “likely to blow up one’s personal or professional lifeâ€? and have always answered “noâ€? to that question when asked by doctors. I’ve had the occasional hookup, but otherwise I’ve consistently had sex in the context of closed, monogamous relationships, i.e., the opposite of risky sex. However, it recently occurred to me that I’m fairly kinky (BDSM, role-play). Nothing I’d consider a varsity-level kink, but what do I know? I have out-there fantasies that are varsity level, but I’ve never done them. Am I just bipolar and kinky? Are the two related somehow? match meets the supercharged libido gas. “But it’s only ‘hypersexuality’ when it gets in the way of a reasonably well-functioning life,â€? said Forney. “Picture masturbating all day instead of going to work, or having relationship-wrecking affairs or unprotected sex with strangers.â€? If your diagnosis is correct and you have bipolar II and not bipolar I, KAB, you may be less susceptible to out-of-control hypersexuality. “Strictly speaking, a bipolar II diagnosis means she cycles between ‘hypomania’ (mild mania) and depression,â€? said Forney, “so her highs aren’t going to be as acute as they would be for someone diagnosed with bipolar I, where hypersexuality can really get dangerous.â€? Forney warns that misdiagnoses are not uncommon where bipolar is concerned, so you might want to get your diagnosis conďŹ rmed. But your long-standing kinks all by themselves – varsity and otherwise – aren’t necessarily related to your condition, KAB, and so long as they’re safely expressed and explored, you aren’t doing anything unreasonably risky or wrong. “Kinky sex in itself doesn’t count as symptom-worthy risky sex – no matter what her doctor emails back,â€? said Forney. “Like for anyone else, there’s nothing necessarily wrong with feeling uninhibited enough to pursue varsity-level kinks, so long as they’re not putting her or anyone else in danger. Ultimately, KAB’s goal is to be stable enough to trust her judgment. For now, she might weigh the risks while she’s feeling stable, so she can make some level-headed decisions about what might or might not be too risky.â€? Forney also recommends having a discussion with your partners and friends about what your limits are – a discussion you’ll want to have when you’re not horny or manic or both. “That way, her partners and friends can help her recognize if she’s crossing her own lines,â€? said Forney. “And realizing that she’s suddenly tempted to cross her own lines could be a signal to her that she’s getting hypomanic and needs to take steps to stabilize – steps like getting better sleep, adjusting her meds, and others I explore in Rock Steady!â€? P.S. If your doctor won’t answer your sex questions – or only gives you unhelpful, sexnegative, kink-shaming answers – ďŹ nd yourself a new doctor. P.P.S. There are letters I have to read three times before I can ďŹ gure out what the fuck is going on. Your letter was as lucid as it was charming. Q

You expect an agent with a vast knowledge of the market, someone who knows who your buyer is and how to reach them, one with a proven record of success. You expect world class negotiating skills. What you don’t expect is honesty, patience, creativity, kindness and the tenacity to stick with you even if it’s a tough sell Kathy & Patrick Conway are all of those things and more. We wouldn’t consider selling or buying again without them. Jax & John Lowell
