FROM THE EDITOR

Struggles KERITH GABRIEL

I

ran into an old colleague of mine recently who like our publication is a part of an initiative called Broke in Philly, a citywide collaboration of publications large and small raising awareness and ultimately solutions journalism to a variety of issues that keep Philadelphians in poverty. The collaboration is managed by Resolve Philadelphia, the upstart organization that sparked the success of the Reentry Project, last year. If you don’t follow Resolve or the Broke initiative, I highly suggest it; it’s a wealth of good city-based journalists doing really noble work. Back to my colleague. Under anonymity he conďŹ ded that there are problems even today that despite appearing to be on the level ďŹ nancially, are constantly holding him underwater. But he also noted savvy ways he’s staying aoat even though it inevitably comes to the detriment of his wallet — at times harder than he would like. The ďŹ rst story he told was an ATM overdraft loophole. The second was the current struggles with his car and the work it needs to just to be street legal. Both stories may seem unique, but I’m willing to wager that there are many Philadelphians living just like him. Just so you know he doesn’t deďŹ ne himself as living in poverty as his annual salary puts him out of that bracket, but it’s his responsibilities that ďŹ nd him consistently falling behind.

The ATM overdraft caper “I make good money, but I’m living paycheck to paycheck. By the time I get my check, after bills, my mortgage, child support payments, car insurance, there’s less than $500 for the month — for me. Child support is the killer, but that’s for another day...My bank will allow me to overdraft $200 one-time and will charge me $35 to overdraft my account as long as my account is at a positive. So there are times when I’ll go and I’m literally living on $200. The trick is making sure that everything in your account is pending because if I overdraft, not only will the bank charge me $35 for the $200 loan, but it’ll reject my scheduled payments for non-sufďŹ cient

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

funds and then charge me $35 for each failed payment. They do it because they know that my salary is direct deposited and they will get their money. There have been times where I forgot about scheduled payments and I’ve ended up getting hit for like $500 between cancelled payments and overdraft fees, so my paycheck is already going to be $500 less when it’s deposited because the bank makes sure to take its cut ďŹ rst. It’s the most depressing thing to know you have to do and the shame of going to the ATM, especially when someone is standing behind you waiting for the machine, makes you feel so shitty about yourself — but I gotta eat and keep the lights on, so what do you do? It’s literally giving myself a payday loan with my own money.â€?

Trouble with the tranny “I drive an older car, but it’s on the fritz. My inspection expired in June so I took it to my mechanic who said for it to be street legal, I’m going to need a new transmission. Well, a transmission for my car even a refurbished one is anywhere from $1800 to two-grand. I don’t have that to be putting in a 15-year-old car, so I drive it without my stickers. Here’s the problem: park anywhere in the city and the PPA catches you without stickers its a $41 ticket. I’ve gotten four in the past two months, that’s $164. It’s literally cheaper for me to dump money to the PPA than it is to get my car ďŹ xed. And I have to drive into Center City all the time for story interviews, assignments, you name it. Every time I park it’s a dice roll if there’ll be a ticket or not.â€? So then why not put it in a parking garage? I asked. “Again, it’s rolling the dice of paying $3 to park for an hour versus a minimum of $12-15 at almost any garage in the city. Having to live this way has really showed me just how much there are processes in place to keep the poor, poor. I’m fortunate that I have a good job that I can pay my bills and maintain good credit but it’s only because I spent all of what I have to what I owe. I read a report that said 40 percent of working Americans spend half their income paying their debts. Well, I’m deďŹ nitely a part of that 40 percent — which is criminal if you remember where we live.â€? Any of these stories hit close to home? Do you use similar means just to stay aoat? Email me at kgabriel@phillyweekly.com. Compiling stories like his for a larger piece in hopes to convey what so many of us in Philly do just to keep from spinning out of control in the cycle of the struggle. Q TWITTER: @SPRTSWTR

Last week, we made a stop inside the Philadelphia Museum of Art to view its latest exhibit, Fabulous Fashion: From Dior's New Look to Now. The exhibit opened Oct. 16 and runs through March 3, 2019, and showcases some of the most historic designs in the life and career of some of the most famous fashion names in the business. Historic costumes from Cristobal Balenciaga (yep, the thousand-dollar dad shoe designer), Oscar de la Renta and of course Dior are all on display. If you've never thought of fashion as art, this exhibit will certainly change your perception as colors, patterns, draping and embellishments make the pieces so much more than just fancy clothes. Plus while you’re at PMA, try the culinary artistry being whipped up at Stir, the new full service restaurant inside the museum. We did, and again, no complaints. — KERITH GABRIEL | @SPRTSWTR

A mural states "PROMISE ZONE" on the side of an artist's studio in Mantua designated a "Promise Zone" in 2014, a nationwide initiative focusing on areas where people lacked the resources and social supports to break out of a cycle of deep poverty, connecting them with quality education, good-paying jobs and affordable housing.

Aspiration Avenue After almost five years, West Philadelphia Promise Zone lays foundation for turnaround – with or without residents’knowledge? BY JON HURDLE

alvin Player had never heard of his section of West Philadelphia being designated as a Promise Zone despite having lived in Mantua for all of his 59 years. But he’s been keenly watching all kinds of improvements to his neighborhood that the federal program set out to achieve when it was announced four years ago. On a warm October afternoon, Player sat outside his apartment building on 35th and Fairmount Avenue and reected on the changes – most of them good, he said – that he’s seen over nearly six decades as a resident

of one of the city’s most poverty-stricken sections. “This used to be the projects but they tore it down about 10 years ago and it made the neighborhood look a little better, he said, sitting next to a patch of sidewalk garden where tomato plants were growing. “You can get anywhere in the city from here, it’s a marvelous place to live, you just need good people. The redevelopment of the block where Player, a retired carpenter, lives with his wife, Armetha Spearman, predates the Promise Zone designation in 2014 for the West Philadelphia neighborhood where half the population lived below the federal poverty line, and

where measures of jobs, crime, housing and health painted a similar picture of a community that was struggling. Almost half-way through its allotted 10year timespan, the Promise Zone hasn’t yet made a big difference to many of those measures but has created links between the community, the City of Philadelphia and the federal government that didn’t exist before, and which are designed to lay the foundation for future progress. Upgrades to housing like that where Player and Spearman live were among the goals set when the Obama administration selected Mantua, along with ďŹ ve other poor neigh-

borhoods around the country, for the special assistance that would come with Promise Zone designation. It also aimed to create jobs in a neighborhood where unemployment hovered at roughly 12 percent; build economic activity by helping small businesses; improve education so that young people would be better equipped to enter the workforce; curb violent crime, and attract private capital to an area that is close to Philadelphia’s downtown ofďŹ ce hub. The initiative was focused on areas where people lacked the resources and social supports to break out of a cycle of deep poverty, connecting them with quality education, good-paying jobs, affordable housing, and a safe place to live. It would achieve its goals by helping residents acquire job skills, attracting public and private investment through improving access to ďŹ nance, and improving security for small businesses. It also aimed to increase access to early childhood learning and build academic skills; reduce violent crime by increasing community policing, and work to attract more private investment. “This initiative is focused in areas of deep poverty where people have lacked the resources and supports to break the cycle of poverty and join the middle class,â€? the federal government said at the time. Nationwide, the other Promise Zone neighborhoods were in San Antonio, Los Angeles, southeastern Kentucky, and the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. The program doesn’t offer direct infusions of federal cash but gives a community preferential access to services like identifying ways to obtain existing government investment, using grants to attract private real estate investment, and helping to ďŹ nd private money to invest in public housing. Almost ďŹ ve years into the 10-year program, is it working in West Philly? Early data on poverty, income, and some other measures of wellbeing stagnated or even deteriorated in the ďŹ rst two years of the program, reecting the poverty rate for Philadelphia as a whole — which stuck stubbornly high at 25.7 percent in 2017, allowing the city to retain its status as the “poorest big city in America.â€? In the Promise Zone, a roughly two-squaremile area that is home to about 30,000 people, the poverty rate in 2016 was almost twice the citywide rate, at 50.6 percent, up from 50.2 percent in 2014, according to the City of Philadelphia, citing data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The neighborhood’s deep poverty rate, deďŹ ned as 50 percent below the federal poverty line, also increased – to 32.3 percent from 31.0 percent over the period. The 2016 unemployment rate was little changed at 12.3 percent, more than twice the recent city-wide rate of 5.8 percent. Median household income in 2016 was $17,969, up slightly from $17,170 when the Promise

Shaketa Armstead, 35, sits on her front stoop with her son and other children. Her street in located within the designated “Promise Zone.â€? Zone was announced. And the proportion of local people aged 25-64 with a high school education or higher edged up to 80.1 percent in 2016 from 79.6 percent two years earlier. “The data [is] no surprise, and should not be taken to indicate that the Promise Zone isn’t working,â€? said Samantha Porter, Director of Place-Based Initiatives at the City of Philadelphia’s OfďŹ ce of Community Empowerment and Opportunity, and the City’s point person on the Promise Zone. She noted that the numbers are based on responses from only some people in the area just two years into the program, and do not accurately reect changes since. “We are four years into the designation, but in census data time, we are only two years in,â€? she said. “This is an inherent challenge, but the reason I think we need such a long designation in the ďŹ rst place.â€? Under the federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, West Philly’s Promise Zone has also

been designated an Opportunity Zone, one of 80 low-income neighborhoods in Philadelphia where new investors are eligible for tax breaks. Its status as an Opportunity Zone means it may attract additional investment, Porter said. One of the challenges of the Promise Zone is to ensure that vigorous growth in adjoining areas such as University City – where expansion by the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, and private developers has sparked a construction boom — spills into surrounding neighborhoods, noted Porter. “West Philadelphia is seeing a lot of growth, and that gives the impression that it’s equitable, she said. “There is still work to be done to ensure that growth is open to all of our neighbors. Even though the Promise Zone data suggests little progress, advocates argue that the program has facilitated a collaboration between government and community groups that didn’t exist before, ensuring at

Calvin Player, 59, a retired carpenter and lifelong resident of Mantua neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 4, 2018. Mantua, the roughly two-square-mile area that is home to about 30,000 people, had a 50.6 percent poverty rate in 2016, almost twice the citywide rate, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Former President Obama designated Mantua a "Promise Zone" in 2014, a nationwide initiative focusing on areas where people lacked the resources and social supports to break out of a cycle of deep poverty, connecting them with quality education, good-paying jobs, affordable housing, and a safe place to live.

least that previously disparate groups are now pulling in the same direction. “Groups in the area have collaborated in ways that we have not collaborated before, and that’s not for lack of trying, but through the Promise Zone initiative, it’s happening,â€? said James Wright, director of community, economic and real estate development at People’s Emergency Center, a Mantua-based nonproďŹ t that provides social services including affordable housing, job training, and ďŹ nancial education. “There are several nonproďŹ ts in Mantua, and before the Promise Zone, it was very hard to get us to work collectively,â€? he said. “With the Promise Zone, we communicate more regularly and with more goals and intent to produce something. From all the convening, people have this road map etched into their mindset on what boxes should be aligned to really help the neighborhood move forward.â€? Wright said the collaboration fostered by the Promise Zone has also helped the neighborhood beneďŹ t from agreements with the developers of two major projects: the University City High School site and Schuylkill Yards, a $3.5 billion development of 14 acres of under-used real estate on the west side of the Schuylkill River. The developer of that project, Brandywine Realty Trust, agreed to provide $3.1 million over ďŹ ve years through a community beneďŹ ts agreement aimed to provide small grants for community groups. Wright believes that funding would not have happened without the Promise Zone. “That kind of collaboration would have been very difďŹ cult to pull off if we hadn’t had the kind of relationships that were developed through the Promise Zone community effort,â€? he said. In their efforts to increase economic opportunity, ofďŹ cials have made it easier for small businesses in the Promise Zone to apply for loans. Rather than requiring them to ďŹ ll out multiple loan applications, a consortium of 35 lenders have produced a single application that is designed to save time and hassle for small business people. Initiated for the Promise Zone, the idea has now spread citywide, said Karen Fegely, who heads the Neighborhood Business Services Unit in the City’s Commerce Department, and sits on the Promise Zone’s executive board. “It’s really a challenge for small businesses to get ďŹ nancing,â€? Fegely said. “They have to go to a bunch of banks or community lenders and ďŹ ll out a lot of ten-page applications. It’s very time consuming and very discouraging.â€? But the lending consortium has cut red tape and duplication, increasing the chances that borrowers will ďŹ nd the ďŹ nancing they need, she said. Meanwhile, other sources of funding from donors such as the William Penn Foundation have continued to ow since the Promise Zone was set up but predated the initiative, and so can’t be attributed to it. The Promise Zone hasn’t helped bring

Mantua, the roughly two-square-mile area that is home to about 30,000 people, had a 50.6 percent poverty rate in 2016, almost twice the citywide rate, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. new federal money into the neighborhood; it doesn’t, for example, provide tax credits for a business that hires someone from the neighborhood. But it has made City agencies and community groups more aware of existing sources of funding, and helped some of them obtain it, Wright said. Meanwhile, the initiative has helped community groups and relevant city-wide organizations set aside their individual agendas and work toward common goals, according to Porter. On housing, for example, interest groups spent the ďŹ rst year and a half of the Promise Zone’s existence formulating a comprehensive plan that included disparate elements such as the number of vacant lots and the number of affordable housing units. OfďŹ cials are now in a position to act on that, Porter said. “It was a successful example of ‘how do all the partners come together and think about moving forward,’â€? she said. “Now, we’re working with the redevelopment authority, city council members and private developers on how we can start to put those recommendations into action. That’s the way we’re bridging the administrative or policy-focused work into real activity in the community.â€? The Promise Zone’s housing goals have

129(0%(5

also been boosted by the involvement of Jumpstart, a nonproďŹ t that trains community members in the skills of property development so that they can take control of local real estate before commercial developers move in. From its base in Philadelphia’s Germantown section, Jumpstart is spreading to other neighborhoods including Mantua, where it has been schooling residents in skills like design and construction, ďŹ nancing and cost estimation so that they can become their own developers. “That meets one of our objectives — affordability, ownership, remediation,â€? Porter said. Homegrown development skills might allow the neighborhood to resist the gentriďŹ cation that is bringing new construction and new residents to some areas of the traditional row-house landscape but also raising costs for existing residents, some said. New apartment buildings are helping to boost real estate prices but simultaneously raising property taxes, said Ray Jackson, a longtime resident who was attending a streetcorner barbecue for about a dozen people. “The more they build, the higher your taxes get,â€? said, Jackson who has lived in the neighborhood for 55 years but had not heard

of the Promise Zone. “It’s improving slowly but it’s not improving for the people in the neighborhood, just the people who come in to the neighborhood.â€? The new arrivals include students from Drexel University whose main campus is just blocks away, and which has built new student housing on its campus in an effort to ease pressure on accommodation in surrounding neighborhoods like Mantua. Edmund Chance, 72, said he too had never heard of the Promise Zone, and didn’t know whether the designation has helped improve the neighborhood since he bought a house there 15 years ago but said his property’s rising value suggests the area is ďŹ nally turning around. “It’s a whole lot better than it was a few years ago,â€? he said, standing next to an empty lot. “When I ďŹ rst came down here it was really rough. I bought a house down here cheap. I ďŹ gured sooner or later it got to improve, and it did.â€? Chance said the neighborhood still has a long way to go, especially on crime, which makes him wonder if it’s wise to go out at night, but that doesn’t stop him doing so. “I’m not going to let it keep me in,â€? he said. Whether the neighborhood is beginning to

turn around because of the federal designation or independently of it, some new construction contrasts sharply with the crumbling shells of abandoned buildings from another era. On Haverford Avenue near 36th Street, a new three-story apartment house, hung with uplighters and an entry intercom, sits next to a derelict industrial building with its roof open to the sky and young trees growing out of ďŹ ssures in its concrete. Next door, another blighted building is boarded up with grafďŹ ticovered plywood, while across the street sits an artist’s studio covered with a multicolored riot of painted heads, hands and vegetation. In an apparent effort to advertise its existence, the words “Promise Zoneâ€? are included in a mural painted on the side of the studio, bordering a grassed empty lot. Even if the Promise Zone has nurtured the right conditions for Mantua to turn itself around, it has done so without the knowledge of residents like Chance and Player. Only members of community organizations that have helped to implement the program seemed to be aware of it during a recent visit to the neighborhood. They included Sam Samuels, a member of the Mantua Civic Association, a nonproďŹ t that advocates for safe streets, quality education, and affordable housing, among other issues. Samuels, 50, said the community could have beneďŹ ted from the initiative more than it has if community leaders had done a better job of publicizing it at the launch. “Nobody knows what it is unless they come to our meetings and we explain what the Promise Zone is,â€? she said, standing on a neighborhood block. “You can put information out there but when the people don’t come to the meetings, they don’t get it.â€? But Gwen Morris, 68, a retired teacher, defended the initiative, saying it had brightened the prospects for students at the Morton McMichael Public School for pre-K to eighth graders, across the street from Player’s apartment building. The program provided grants and more resources to the school and resulted in its scores on standardized tests being “knocked out of the box,â€? said Morris, who now serves on the school advisory council. “The Promise Zone has done a really good job.â€? Gab, the home for right wing expressionism had a home in Philadelphia BY TIMAREE SCHMIT

G

ab, the alternative social media network that has become popular among the alt-right, has been suspended after a user was connected to a terrorist attack inside a Pittsburgh synagogue on Oct. 26. The site, which has grown in popularity among white supremacists for its policies on freedom of speech we know for a time was based in Philadelphia. In the SEC ďŹ ling made for Gab AI, Inc in January 2018, the Gab’s address is listed as 1900 Market Street, the location of WeWork. The coworking chain’s privacy policy does not allow the company to conďŹ rm or deny member identities, but a source at the local site, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Gab Founder and CEO Andrew Torba and other Gab management had not ever been active members, suggesting WeWork was used only as a technical address. Upon learning about the potential local connection, Philadelphia Weekly had reached out to Gab CEO Andrew Torba earlier this month for a possible interview and received the reply, “I do not do personal proďŹ le interviews. Gab.com is bigger than me personally. Happy to answer any questions about Gab or our mission to defend free expression online for all people.â€? Since then Torba has not replied to additional requests for comment. Created as an alternative to Twitter in August 2016, Gab has been referred to as a “echo chamberâ€? for neo-Nazis and white supremacists. A cursory look around the site, especially at the proďŹ les suggested to new users, will display posts with racist, sexist and homophobic slurs. Robert Bowers, the 46-year-old Pittsburgh resident charged with the shooting that killed 11 people at the Tree of Life synagogue Saturday morning, had posted this on his Gab account shortly before the massacre: "HIAS

Gab.com, the social media network that catered to right wing ideology is listed as having a home at a WeWork in Philadelphia, although a source says it was merely just the address. likes to bring invaders in that kill our people. I can't sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I'm going in." HIAS is a nonproďŹ t established to help Jewish refugees. According to a statement released by Gab to media members on the shooting Sunday night, “Gab.com’s policy on terrorism and violence have always been very clear: we have a zero tolerance for it. Gab unequivocally disavows and condemns all acts of terrorism and violence.â€? They go on to describe conďŹ rming the account of Bowers, suspending it and reporting it to law enforcement. Asked about the post made by the alleged shooter on the morning of the attack, Gab CEO and founder Andrew Torba told NPR, “I don't know. Do you see a direct threat in there? Because I don't. What would you expect us to do with a post like that?â€? In response to the shooting, PayPal ended their relationship with Gab, cutting the site from their payment system, citing a review of user accounts that are involved in “perpetuation of hate, violence or discriminatory intolerance.â€? On Oct. 29, Gab’s hosting provider Joyent terminated the site’s service. This is the latest barrier the site has experienced in an ongoing attempt to completely terminate the platform. Previously, Apple denied Gab’s app from its store, Google removed the app from its Google Play store, and Twitter has cut off access to its API. This also doesn’t mark the ďŹ rst time Gab’s domain registrar and hosts have both suspended because of anti-Semitic user posts. Despite the current suspension, CEO Andrew Torba maintains the site will return soon. In the aftermath of the site being terminated, Gab’s Twitter feed was ďŹ lled has been ďŹ lled with defensive posts, detailing their cooperation with law enforcement, decrying other social media sites and denying responsibility for having helped foment violence. Pentagon police officer and 9/11 hero is the focus of an award-winning documentary on mental health in the aftermath of tragedy screening at the upcoming Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival beginning Nov. 8.

Heroes need a hand PAAFA documentary, Corridor Four examines mental health of Sept. 11 first responders BY ANDREA CANTOR

W

hen the black smoke overtook the Pentagon on 9/11, a bellowing voice broke through the dark void: "Head toward my voice.â€? William Wayne Sinclair and others who followed the spoken words found safety, while so many others did not. Suffering from second-and-third-degree burns, Sinclair ultimately found the man to whom the life saving voice belonged was Isaac Hoopii, an ofďŹ cer in the Pentagon Police Department’s canine bomb detection unit. Hoopii was credited with carrying and guiding out at

least 16 people that day. The story of the Hawaiian-born ofďŹ cer with the lifesaving voice – who also sang in the cultural Aloha Boys band – caught national media attention. But what wasn’t covered is that someone needed to save Hoopii. “Did I do enough? Did I help enough people?,â€? asked Hoopii in Corridor Four, a featurelength documentary depicting the events of that fateful day. With his memory still trapped inside the walls of the Pentagon, Hoopii opens up about the ongoing trauma he witnessed and the power of music and family that kept him alive. Showing on the last day of the Philadelphia

Asian American Film Festival (PAAFA), Nov. 8-18, the documentary takes a rare look at mental health among 9/11 ďŹ rst responders, many suffering from severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Hoopii is also scheduled to be in attendance for a Q&A after the screening. The documentary has been circulating the ďŹ lm festival circuit since last year, winning “Best Documentary Feature" at the Washington West Film Festival and "Best in Show" at the Rosebud Film Festival. As an independent ďŹ lm, Tringali and his wife Maria Bissell, producer of Corridor Four, do not believe the ďŹ lm will be released in mainstream theaters but will come out to the public in some form next year. “The profession that they have is that they are supposed to help people, they are the ones supposed to be the assistance,â€? said Stephen Tringali, who directs and oversees the cinematography. “[You] feel like maybe you're inadequate at your job if you have to say, ‘But I am supposed to be the person going in and helping out.’ You are supposed to be seen as this strong individual who can tackle all of these issues.â€? Tringali recalled at past screenings, medical responders identifying with the movie, recognizing their own battles with PTSD projected on the screen. More police ofďŹ cers and ďŹ reďŹ ghters committed suicide last year than were killed in the line of duty, according to a white paper report from the Ruderman Family Foundation. In 2017, at least 103 ďŹ reďŹ ghters and 140 police ofďŹ cers committed suicide, while 93 ďŹ reďŹ ghters and 129 police ofďŹ cers died in the line of duty. "I just hope that this movie will help other people going through a hard time,â€? said Hoopii in a conversation with PW. “Corridor Four really focuses on how family can be a great support system and help as a coping mechanism." During ďŹ lming, as Hoopii realized the positive impact his story could have on others, he began to introduce Tringali to other ofďŹ cers in his department so that they could share their narratives as well. “Everybody [Hoopii] worked with, there were different versions or different shades of this mental health story. Not everyone’s trauma looks the same and it manifests itself in different ways,â€? said Tringali. “It might not manifest immediately after, it might happen years later. [But that] also means that treatment can look different too.â€? Q Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival | Nov. 8-18. Prices vary. An American Story: Norman Mineta & His Legacy Norman Mineta was a man of firsts: he was the first Asian American mayor of a major city (San Jose, California) and the first Asian-American Cabinet member, having served under two U.S. presidents of different parties. But over a 20-year career in Congress, Mineta never forgot being forced into a U.S. World War II concentration camp as a child. In the Closing Night film, this documentary covers Mineta’s life and how, when in a position of power, he made sure what happened to him during the internment of Japanese Americans would not happen to any other ethnic or religious group, particularly after 9/11 as US Secretary of Transportation. Who Will Write Our History, a documentary about the Jewish intellectuals who secretly documented the atrocities of the Holocaust will screen Nov. 7 at the 38th annual Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival.

‘The oral tradition of fi lm’ Gershman Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival prepares for its 38th season BY ANDREA CANTOR

I

n the wake of the Pittsburgh shooting at Tree of Life synagogue that left 11 dead, national attention has refocused on the rising rates of anti-Semitism. Now more than ever, importance is being placed on education of the Jewish people. Most recently in Philadelphia, the Horwitz-Wasserman Holocaust Memorial Plaza was unveiled at 16th and Benjamin Franklin Parkway to honor those murdered in the Holocaust. On the heels of all of this is the upcoming Gershman Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival (GPJFF), running from Nov. 3-18.

“There is such a richness and beauty to Jewish culture and Jewish storytelling through cinema. What happens to us when we are gone? We turn into stories. Our whole lives becomes stories,â€? said Olivia Antsis, artistic director of the GPJFF. “If there is no one who cares to delve into that, and preserve that and put it out in some meaningful way, it’s like we’re done.â€? Back in May 2018, the Gershman Y announced it would be moving out of its home of over 90 years and changing its name. Still transitioning out of the building owned by University of the Arts, the newly entitled GPJFF will focus entirely on its annual ďŹ lm festival and ďŹ lm programming. Coming up on its 38th iteration, its ďŹ rst under the new rebrand, the Jewish Film Festival will take place over the course of 19 days, screening 39 ďŹ lms from 12 countries across 11 theaters. “This year we are the Gershman Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival. As our own organization, we have a very clear focus,â€? said Antsis, who has been with the organization for 11 years. “It's ďŹ lm and ďŹ lm-related programs that speak to Jewish values and legacy.â€? Cinema as a form of oral tradition, highly valued in the Jewish faith, Antsis explained that ďŹ lms act as a passage of knowledge from one generation to the next. Among the festival’s extensive lineup, some of the ďŹ lms dedicated to preserving the past include: Box for Life, a documentary about Holocaust survivor and journalist Noah Klieger (Nov. 4, Gershman Y) and Who Will Write Our History, a documentary about the Jewish intellectuals in the Warsaw Ghetto who secretly documented the atrocities of the Holocaust (Nov. 7, National Museum of American Jewish History). But the curated ďŹ lms run the gamut of genres, ensuring that “there is something for

everyone.â€? “We try we strive to not only have serious issues explored in the festival or ďŹ lms about Jewish history or about the Holocaust or about the diaspora of Israel-Palestine,â€? explained Antsis on the aspirations of the nation’s second oldest Jewish ďŹ lm festival. “We deďŹ nitely want to connect to a wide audience out there who just love movies.â€? One of the ďŹ lms Antsis is excited for is the dark comedy To Dust. After the death of his wife, Shmuel, played by GĂŠza RĂśhrig, a hasidic cantor is struck with overwhelming fears for his wife. While his sons think he is possessed by a dybbuk, or Jewish demon, Shmuel seeks the help of a science professor named Albert (Matthew Broderick) to learn more about the decomposition process. Playing on Nov. 8 at the Ritz East, the event will also welcome the ďŹ lm’s director Shawn Snyder. Another ďŹ lm Antsis recommended is Song of Back and Neck, playing at the Ritz East on Nov. 15. Director, writer and star of the ďŹ lm, Paul Lieberstein (known for his role as Toby Flenderson in The OfďŹ ce) plays Fred, a paralegal who “kvetchesâ€? about his chronic pain while being mistreated at work and in the doctor’s ofďŹ ce. He then meets Regan, played by Rosemarie DeWitt, who introduces him to acupuncture, a holistic process that reveals a strange hidden talent of Fred’s. A oddball narrative, the movie takes an earnest look at debilitating pain, prescribing a heavy dose of comic relief along the way. The screening will be attended by Lieberstein and the ďŹ lm’s producer, Jennifer Prediger. During a co-sponsored event with Penn Cinema and Media Studies, Lieberstein and Prediger will also host a free ďŹ lmmaking master class on Nov. 16 at University of Pennsylvania. Both To Dust and Song of Back and Neck will include a post-ďŹ lm happy hour at Positano Coast. Continually striving to expand the audience demographic, particularly among younger generations, the festival still remains true to itself by selecting ďŹ lms that educate and challenge its viewers — even if that means the content isn’t the easiest to watch. This year’s centerpiece ďŹ lm is Working Woman, which deals with an Israeli woman Orna, played Liron Ben-Shlush, who receives a job promotion as well as unwanted sexual advances from her boss. Directed by Michal Aviad, the movie will also include a post-ďŹ lm reception on Nov. 10 at the Gershman Y. “We want everybody to be stirred up at this festival and learn something new...if you present ďŹ lms that are really palatable all the time and don't challenge then you're not going to create that vibrant community that you're looking for,â€? explained Antsis. “You want people to talk and discuss these ďŹ lms and you want these ďŹ lms to really hit a nerve with your audience.â€? Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal star in Wildlife, a 1960’s era rollercoaster that was the feature screening of the 27th annual Philadelphia Film Festival.

It’s a wrap! Highlights, lowlights in the aftermath of the 27th annual Philadelphia Film Festival BY ANDREA CANTOR

T

he ďŹ nal curtain on the annual cinema extravaganza that is the Philadelphia Film Festival has drawn to a close but not before some of the most thought-provoking ďŹ lms – for better or for worse – danced across movie screens all over the city for 11 glorious days. Here’s a few from the week we sat in on and reviewed. Some are ones, we’re sure to remember – along with a few we’ll most try to forget.

Wildlife In Wildlife, Carey Mulligan’s role as Jeanette Brinson, a 1960’s housewife reminds you of the story of your grandmother. Not the grandmother who baked cookies and knitted cozy afghans. No, the

129(0%(5

grandmother who seemed to be on a never-ending emotional rollercoaster and was probably institutionalized at one point, but no ever talks about it. Set to open to the public on Nov. 2, Wildlife screened at the Philadelphia Film Center, formerly known as the Prince Theater. The centerpiece ďŹ lm followed with a live Q&A with actor turned director Paul Dano, who received the festival’s Artistic Achievement in Independent Film award. Also one of the ďŹ lm’s producers, Dano wrote the screenplay of Wildlife, based off the novel of the same name, with real-life partner Zoe Kazan (granddaughter of legendary director Elia Kazan). Partly due to the screenplay, but more so the tour-de-force performance, Mulligan epitomizes a woman’s struggle to meet societal expectations while her unrealized desires for self-autonomy simmer within. It is this contention that leads Mulligan’s character to enact the stereotypically “crazyâ€? woman after her husband Jerry, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, leaves her alone with their son Joe (Ed Oxenbould) to ďŹ ght forest ďŹ res. “We’re all too used to only seeing women behaving really well [in movies],â€? Mulligan said in response to a man criticizing her role as “completely reprehensibleâ€? at the New York Film Festival, according to Indiewire. “When we see them out of control or struggling it doesn’t ring true because of everything we’ve been brought up to understand that women are always perfect and can do anything. That’s an unrealistic expectation of a woman. Seeing real humanity on-screen can be really jarring from a female perspective.â€? Mulligan showcases the confusion her character feels within through the rampant changes of external emotion. During a small party scene with her son and the man she has an affair with, Mulligan exhibits a new conicting emotion with each uttered sentence, nuanced gesture

and step of the cha-cha-cha. An embodiment of loneliness, anger, fear, seductiveness, conďŹ dence, shame and pride, Mulligan depicts the women of 60’s who could not adapt to the caged role of the dutiful and subservient wife. While Mulligan provides a unique element to the ďŹ lm, her male counterpart lacks the “real humanityâ€? deserving of the narrative. Jerry’s storyline falls prey to a onenote, Willy Loman-esque, pride-ridden, emasculated man. The character may have beneďŹ tted from casting a lesser known actor so as not to distract from the largely absent on-screen time. The story mainly takes place from the son, Joe’s perspective with the camera rarely breaking a close third. As the child in the midst of a crumbling traditional family, often being placed in the middle of parental ďŹ ghting, Oxenbould plays the role given to its limits. But the character is ultimately pigeonholed into a passive victim and shortchanged a brief character arc in the ďŹ lm’s abrupt ending to tie up loose ends. Even so, Wildlife is still a worthwhile watch as a dissemination of the pristine portrait of 1960’s suburban life, a consistent theme that runs throughout the ďŹ lm — and actualized when Joe takes a part-time job as a photographer. “Family is the greatest love of your life and also, maybe because of that, one of the greatest sources of struggle,â€? said Dano about why he was drawn to the book by Richard Ford during the Q&A at the Philadelphia Film Festival. “The other thing that really grabbed me was really the mystery of who our parents are and that felt seductive to me. I really wanted to know and understand Jerry and Jeannette even more when I closed the book, so I reread it and daydreamed about it and thought maybe it could be a ďŹ lm.â€? The ďŹ rst-time director said the experience gave him “respect of the [ďŹ lmmaking] processâ€? and that he would be excited to do it again, although he does not know when.

Mug Directed by MaĹ‚gorzata Szumowska, Mug is a Polish drama that centers on a small rural town in the hinterlands. Actor Mateusz KoĹšciukiewicz, plays an easy-going guy named Jacek. Jacek has his dog, a girl and a steady job working on a construction site to beat out Rio de Janeiro for the world’s largest Jesus statue (inspired by the actual statue “Christ the Kingâ€? in Ĺšwiebodzin). But after Jacek has a work accident, literally falling into Jesus, he becomes the ďŹ rst person in Poland to receive a face-transplant. Attaining national hero status, Jacek remains the same even with his new skin. But it is those around him, other than his sister and father, that reveal their two-faced nature. Replete with dark comedic moments (just wait for the hauntingly hilarious exorcism scene), the ďŹ lm provides a richly complex look at disability and the recognition of deep-seeded hypocrisy. Christina Hendricks stars opposite Alysia Reiner in Egg, a dramedy which attempts to depict to role of women, but fails in driving home an accurate message from in both its plot and cinematography. work, the partially out-of-focus shots underscore the script’s experimental contemplation on the theme of perception versus reality.

Egg Egg feels like a ďŹ rst draft of a better ďŹ lm to be made. Directed by Marianna Palka, the ďŹ lm stars actors Christina Hendricks and Alysia Reiner, two women with very different ideas of motherhood. Set primarily in one room with two juxtaposing couples, and an untraditional surrogate, the dialogue-heavy Egg is staged like a play. In its overt attempt to call out the patriarchy, somehow the ďŹ lm promulgates a message that a woman can either have a career and be alone or be a housewife and indure unbearable emotional abuse from their husband. Writer Risa Mickenberg gave a Q&A at the Ritz East, and said she was inspired to write the ďŹ lm due to her own decision to not have a child. This is a classic case where a ďŹ lm tries to lead with its message feet ďŹ rst, instead of allowing it to organically arise from a well-structured narrative. What the audience is left with is a confusing storyline with disingenuous confrontations and outcomes.

Write When You Get Work Directed by Stacy Cochran, Write When You Get Work is a charming indie comedydrama about Johnny Collins, a man who reconnects and pursues his highschool sweetheart Ruth Duffy. Still just as smitten with Ruth, Johnny ďŹ nds a Ruth that has left her lower class roots, Dunkin Donuts job, teen pregnancy and mischievous days behind her

for an position at a swanky private school for girls on the Upper East side. Ultimately, the ďŹ lm has some disjointed moments, struggling to set its pacing and tone. While, at times, it seems like different movies are ďŹ ghting for the screen, Write When You Get Work is still a fun watch with notes of heavier themes, including class and race issues. Reminiscent of Ernst Lubitsch’s 1932 Trouble in Paradise, the two protagonists, played by Rachel Keller and Finn Wittrock, make conning almost adorable and have some very good on-screen chemistry.

Galveston Okay, so this ďŹ lm got some heavy mixed reviews. But despite what others say, the ďŹ lm was engrossing, heartfelt, funny and very well acted. Set in New Orleans, hitman Roy, played by Ben Foster, is diagnosed with a respiratory illness, possibly lung cancer. In denial, he takes on a job where he is double-crossed by his boss. Escaping with a teenage prostitute named Rocky, played by Elle Fanning, the two try to ďŹ nd sanctuary in Galveston. Directed by MĂŠlanie Laurent, the storyline does play into the archetypal southern crime drama and could have used more screen time to esh out motives and interrelationships. However, moments shine as an almost satirical reection of the genre. Moreover, Fanning elevates the old western stock character of the “prostitute with a heart of goldâ€? into a nuanced depiction of the systemic factors of the sex trade. A tribute concert to Philadelphia singer Teddy Pendergrass by the Teddy Bear Orchestra closed out the Philadelphia Film Festival alongside a documentary that chronicles his life and career.

‘Considerably superior’ Teddy Pendergrass documentary closes out Philadelphia Film Festival BY STEPHEN SILVER

C

losing out the 11-day affair that was the world premiere of the Philadelphia Film Festival, was the world premiere of Teddy Pendergrass: If You Don't Know Me, a documentary feature about the late Philly soul legend. The ďŹ lm is a success, for two reasons: It gets across Pendergrass' unique appeal, and it's full of great stories by musical old timers and the singer's other collaborators. Directed by South African-British ďŹ lmmaker Olivia Lichtenstein, Pendergrass’ ďŹ lm chronicles his childhood in 1950s North Philly to his early days in the Philadelphia International Records lineup, both with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes – and later as a successful solo artist. The ďŹ lm does a great delivery of Pendergrass' considerable talent and sex appeal, as demonstrated in the concerts he would perform in his heyday that were women-only. The ďŹ lm also follows the car accident on Lincoln Drive in 1982 that rendered the singer a quadriplegic, as well as his subsequent comeback, which included a performance on the Philadelphia end of Live Aid in 1985. Of the two movies I saw last week that culminate in the subject’s triumphant performance at Live Aid, Teddy Pendergrass is considerably superior to Bohemian Rhapsody.

129(0%(5

We're told the singer’s story through archival footage, as well as talking-head interviews with Pendergrass' friends, classmates, bandmates, and even Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff themselves, who ďŹ nish each other's sentences on more than one occasion. The singer's family is also represented, including his mother, Ida, who celebrated her 100th birthday this year. We even hear from the woman – who happens to be transgender- who was in the car with Pendergrass at the time of his accident. The only real misstep in the ďŹ lm? It regularly illustrates events that took place in the 1970s and '80s, with establishing shots that are clearly of today’s Philly skyline. And at one point, we see someone watching Pendergrass footage from the '80s, on what's obviously a at-screen TV of modern vintage. When I ďŹ rst heard that Teddy Pendergrass was the closing night ďŹ lm at this year's Philadelphia Film Festival, a thought occurred to me: Wasn't there already a Pendergrass doc, about ďŹ ve years ago? Turns out I was wrong – I'd been thinking of Supermensch, Mike Myers’ 2013 documentary about longtime showbiz manager Shep Gordon. Pendergrass' was Gordon’s client, and that doc consisted of a long section about Pendergrass’ life and career. And it turns out the new ďŹ lm's origins lie in that movie as well. Lichtenstein, the director, told me before the screening that she

saw Supermensch, and that “I've always loved Teddy Pendergrass, and I didn't realize that was his story and that was what happened to him. So I had one of those moments, when I realized, 'I have to make a ďŹ lm about this guy, I was just compelled to do it, really. Teddy was such a complicated guy, and it was such an interesting story, that there was more than enough for two ďŹ lms, to be honest.â€? She added that she grew up listening to Gamble and Huff music, and that she wanted Philadelphia to be “a kind of character in the ďŹ lm.â€? The ďŹ lm has been picked up by Showtime. And after it screened Friday night, Pendergrass' Teddy Bear Orchestra reunited on stage – complete with several members who had been seen in the movie- and played a few songs. This year's Philadelphia Film Festival actually continued through the weekend despite the "closing night" taking place on Friday. The fest featured an eclectic lineup of more than 100 ďŹ lms, including Oscar contenders, strong documentaries, and foreign ďŹ lms, including a “Nordic Voicesâ€? section. It's the ďŹ rst edition of the festival following the Prince Theater's recent renaming as the Philadelphia Film Center. This year's PFF featured some Oscar contenders – Alfonso Cuaron's Roma, Barry Jenkins' If Beale Street Could Talk, Steve McQueen's Widows, and Joel Edgerton's Boy Erased – that met expectations, and others, most notably Peter Hedges' Ben is Back, that were disappointments. But the fest also featured some outstanding under-the-radar stuff, such as Sandi Tan's astonishing documentary Shirkers, which told the story of how the Singapore native fulďŹ lled her dream as a teenager of making a road movie, had the footage taken from her, and then made a movie about the whole saga (Shirkers is already available on Netix). Another was Jim Cummings' Thunder Road, which opens with an extremely awkward funeral eulogy and only gets cringier- and somehow, funnier- from there. And the documentary Chef Flynn combines the so-so story of a teenaged chef prodigy with a much more compelling one about his overbearing mom. The worst thing I saw at the fest was probably InďŹ nite Football, a mind-numbing Romanian documentary about a guy's quest to reinvent soccer to make it safer, although Vox Lux, with Natalie Portman as an abrasive, tragedyadjacent pop star, wasn't far behind. I expect to spend much of the winter arguing with those who loved it. Sure, the festival lineup didn't have everything. The upcoming ďŹ lm from the Coen brothers wasn't in the lineup, and while Creed II and M. Night Shyamalan's Glass were ďŹ lmed in the area in the last year, but neither appeared at the festival (though M. Night himself was spotted at one screening.) But overall, this year's PFF provided a ďŹ ne, well-curated cross-section of the year in ďŹ lm. Q TWITTER: @STEPHENSILVER

In an effort to highlight the creativity and individuality of its thespians, Theatre Philadelphia has stripped binary award winners and will house its annual Barrymore Awards inside South Philadelphia’s Bok Building.

Heading down south Barrymore Awards move to Bok Building and towards more gender-inclusive system for nominations BY GRACE MAIORANO

A

rt, in all its forms, tends to reect the immediate milieu – sometimes consciously, sometimes not. Most recently, the Philadelphia theater scene is knowingly responding to recent social movements, not only on global scales but local ones, as well. At the moment, such reassessments are not necessarily conďŹ ned to avant garde or experimental performance but rather are being instilled by institutional artistic organizations, speciďŹ cally the upcoming Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre. “Recognizing that, Theatre Philadelphia and the Barrymore, the Barrymore being a much longer institution, how are we reective and responsive to the changing community?â€? asked Leigh Goldenberg, executive director of Theatre Philadelphia. Theatre Philadelphia, a regional organization dedicated to connecting theatrical collectives, strived to seize two societal shifts and evince them for the 2017-18 Barrymore season. This year’s iteration centers upon the categorization of self-identities and the space in which the ceremony will

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

be held – South Philly’s historic Bok Technical School, renamed in the last 10 years or so as the Bok Building. For the ďŹ rst time since its inception in 1995, the prestigious ceremony, which was taken over by Theatre Philadelphia in 2014, is stripping gender binary titles among its more than two-dozen awards being presented on Nov. 5. Now, instead of “Best Actorâ€? and “Best Actressâ€? in plays and musical groupings, nominees, which were announced in August, fall into unspeciďŹ c sex catalogs, like “Outstanding Leading Performance in a Playâ€? or “Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Musical.â€? The team behind this year’s Barrymore Awards say the conventional categorization was a topic of discussion stirring in community the past few years. “The representation in the Barrymores was starting to be questioned by the community,â€? said Elaina Di Monaco, associate director of the 2018 Barrymore Awards. “And my impression is, in the last several years, there’s been an enormous effort, a volunteer effort from members of the community being like, ‘Our community is more diverse and intricate than this, and we want the Barrymores to represent that.’’’

Throughout this year, Philadelphia was among ďŹ ve major cities across North America to announce moving its main theater awards to a gender-inclusive system, as Philly was the second to to announce nominees in this format alongside theater organizations in Toronto, San Francisco, Seattle, and Chicago. Tackling this structural adjustment did not solely include editing award titles, but actually having people of all races, genders and sexaulities review nominaited work. This year, the Barrymore’s 80 nominees, as well as the 12 judges who make the ďŹ nal decisions, were asked to provide demographic information for both existing and potential members, allowing the critiquing process to feel more appropriate for thespians of all walks. “We recognized that there are performers in our community who – asking them to put themselves into one of those categories is harmful, inaccurate, confusing – not something they want to do,â€? Goldenberg added. Even if classic or new roles are written with concrete cisgender characters, Di Monaco says the performers portraying them should not feel attached to those labels. “We have this incredible community of gender-nonconforming, non-binary, trans artists that are representing these characters, and so, how do you honor their performance? And the answer is, you, don’t put them in a binary,â€? Di Monaco said. “You open the category.â€? Both Di Monaco and Goldenberg say this colossal revision aligns with another re-approach of this year’s Barrymore, as, also for the ďŹ rst time, the ceremony will be held in the auditorium of Bok. Transplanting this nearly 25-year-old ceremony from a traditional theater setting in Center City to a repurposed public school space in East Passyunk Crossing also echoes a change in the community – the inux of artists ocking to South Philly. “The fabric of South Philadelphia is changing ‌ I look around and I’m like – there are a lot of traditional values represented here,â€? Di Monaco said. “And, I think that that’s beautiful and there’s

also a lot of new communities expanding and changing, and it’s making for really great food and really great art.â€? From jewelers to painters, Bok serves as a hub of pulsating creativity — making the building a perfect ďŹ t for this year’s Barrymore. Goldenberg says the Barrymore’s reach is a 35-mile radius from City Hall, so the board must consider how the ceremony is representing all of those regions, including companies, artists and audiences. The Barrymore, commonly known as Philly’s “Theatre Prom,â€? will undoubtedly live up to this sobriquet this year, as following the ceremony, after parties will be held in two of Bok’s gyms – one serving as a dance oor, the other as a piano bar. “It is a school, and it is a repurposed space, but it’s also a repurposed space that a lot of arts performances have happened in,â€? Di Monaco said. “ So, I think that’s cool. I think it kind of like highlights the beauty of nontraditional venues and repurposing. The arts have been doing that forever and ever.â€? Still, several aspects of the ceremony remain, including live performances, the distribution of $75,000 in cash prizes and the presentation of special and grant awards, such as the F. Otto Haas Award for an Emerging Philadelphia Theatre Artist and the Lifetime Achievement Award, which is being given to Paul Meshejian of PlayPenn this year. But, comprehensively, this year’s Barrymore Awards depict a changing social climate on more than one level. Serving as a top-tier for Philadelphia art, the revised setting is intended to make amendments even past the parameters of performance. “We’re feeling good that we’re on the leading edge of this,â€? Goldenberg said. “A thing that I keep saying is that arts are where we make change and lead on change, and if we can say in our awards program this is a value that we hold, then that will trickle back to the organizations that participate with us and their producing and casting decisions and also the audiences who will be able to see themselves on stage.â€? ’m a 40-year-old married straight woman. I gave birth to our ďŹ rst kid in 2015 and our second earlier this year. My perineum tore and was stitched both times. I have not been able to have sex with penetration since having our second child. My OB/GYN said I’m “a little tighter nowâ€? due to the way the stitching was performed. My husband is very well endowed and I can’t imagine how on earth I’m ever going to get that thing back in me, let alone enjoy it. We have a history of pretty hot sex and I really miss it. I’ve been searching online for some sex toys to help me. I’ve never used sex toys before. I’ve always been able to have thrilling orgasms easily without any devices. I still can with manual stimulation. But I want to have sex with my husband. I’m confused and I just don’t know what I need to help me open back up and get through the pain. Please help! – Thanks In Advance “Unfortunately, this situation is very common—but luckily there are options to help her get her groove back,â€? said Dr. Rachel Gelman, a pelvic oor physical therapist at the Pelvic Health and Rehabilitation Center (pelvicpainrehab.com). Also sadly common: OB/GYNs shrugging off concerns like yours, TIA. “I see that all the time,â€? said Dr. Gelman. “Part of the problem is that the pelvic oor/ muscles aren’t on most doctor’s radar. That’s due to many factors—cough, cough, insurance companies, cough, our dysfunctional health care system, cough—but to water it down, it’s the OB/GYN’s job to get someone through pregnancy and deliver a healthy baby. And when that’s accomplished, the feeling is their job is done.â€? But so long as you’re not able to have and enjoy PIV sex with your hung husband, TIA, there’s still work to do.

“TIA needs to see a pelvic oor physical therapist,â€? said Dr. Gelman. “A good PT would be able to assess and treat any pelvic oor dysfunction, which is often the primary cause or a contributing factor for anyone experiencing pain with sex, especially after childbirth.â€? At this point Dr. Gelman began to explain that pushing a living, breathing, screaming human being out of your body is an intense experience and I explained to Dr. Gelman that I’ve had to push a few living, breathing, screaming human beings out of my body, thank you very much. Dr. Gelman clariďŹ ed that she was talking about “the trauma of labor and delivery,â€? something with which I have no experience. “Labor and delivery can have a signiďŹ cant impact on the pelvic oor muscles which can cause a myriad of symptoms,â€? said Dr. Gelman. Pain during PIV sex sits high on the list of those symptoms. “The fact that TIA had tearing with the deliveries means she most likely has scar tissue, and a PT would again be able to treat the scar to help decrease any hypomobility and hypersensitivity,â€? said Dr. Gelman. “A pelvic oor specialist can also instruct her in a home program which may include stretches, relaxation techniques, and dilators—dilators are graduated cylinders that are inserted vaginally to help stretch the vaginal opening and promote relaxation of the pelvic oor.â€? A set of “graduated cylindersâ€? is essentially “a bouquet of dildos,â€? TIA. You start with the smallest dilator/dildo, inserting it every day until you can insert it without any pain or discomfort, and then you “graduateâ€? (nudge, nudge) to the next “cylinderâ€? (wink, wink). You can order a set of dilators online, TIA, but Dr. Gelman wants you to ďŹ nd a doc that specializes in sexual medicine ďŹ rst. “There are some good medical associations that she can check out for resources and to help locate a provider in her area,â€? said Dr. Gelman. “The websites of the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health (ISSWSH), the International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM) and the International Pelvic Pain Society (IPPS) are where she should start.â€?
