Look, learn, appreciate: The PMA Contemporary Craft Show

T

he Philadelphia Museum of Art Contemporary Craft Show returns for its 39th edition this week, featuring 195 of the finest and most dynamic craft artists in the United States showcasing amazing pieces on exhibit for sale to the city’s art enthusiasts.

Presenting a wide variety of categories, 2015’s iteration brings the best in ornate furniture, jewelry, glass, wood, leather designs and much more to appreciative onlookers and prospective buyers. The event, which, since its founding, has raised nearly $11 million for educational programs and purchases for both permanent and special collections at the Art Museum, is presented annually by its Women’s Committee and Craft Show Committee. And the stunning work on display must be seen up close to be appreciated.

Via a dynamic and unique approach, the PMA Contemporary Craft Show introduces some of America’s finest emerging artists, offering symposia, studio tours and three on-site demonstrations per day with art pros from all around the country. Join Steven Ford, Jennifer McCurdy, Randall Darwall and Brian Murphy on Thursday afternoon to learn easy techniques using polymer, porcelain and hand-dyed textiles, or check out the party on Friday with host Karen Karuza and

artists Candone Wharton and Kathy Wegman, who’ll present their unusual jewelry techniques and weaving along with workshops on the creation of artwork from reclaimed objects. Welcome back to the new Bud and Marilyn’s tasty takes on retro comfort classics will transport you to simpler times. By Brian Freedman

A

round 25 years ago, at a summertime barbecue my parents were throwing, I got the brilliant idea to mix up a melted, unopened Fla-Vor-Ice stick—one of those clear plastic tubes of fruit-flavored sugarwater that you put into the freezer and turn into a popsicle—with a bit of my father’s vodka. The result was a neon-colored drink that tasted like what I imagine Satan himself mixes up for new residents in Hell upon their arrival.

I hadn’t thought of that moment in decades—until, that is, I settled into my seat at the bar of Bud and Marilyn’s, ordered the sapphire-blue, happy-hour special $6 Cannonball cocktail—essentially a nicely crafted rosemary-infused margarita, but, you know, blue. Halfway through drinking it way too quickly, and several bites into my excellent happy-hour snacks, I realized that, in the 20 or so minutes I’d been there, this charmingly retro restaurant had already thrown me into a blast-from-the-past mood. And I hadn’t even sat down to dinner yet.

Alongside my massive cocktail chalice, now sweating along the sides and casting the blue liquid into a more shimmering light, I munched on an excellent riff on the mozzarella sticks of my youth, here reimagined with beautifully fried fingers of cheese curd, each squeaky bite cosseted in a perfectly crisp shell. (They were great on their own, even better when swiped through the garlicky scallion ranch, and less impressive when joined by an otherwise well-made smoky guajillo salsa.) Nashville hot buns were certainly not the fried chicken of my childhood, though I wish they had been: Riffing on the sudden and justifiable popularity of Nashville-style hot chicken, these reformulated the dish as a sort of deeply American bao bun, the ranch dressing softening the chicken’s tangy heat, the mouthwatering zip of a pickle brine slaw playing treble. All I needed was my old Huffy dirt bike and a G.I. Joe “tattoo” on my bicep, and I’d have been right back in the Philly ‘burbs of 1984.

Because Bud and Marilyn’s is an homage to the classics of the American comfort food of the past, there is, of course, not just a toe but a whole foot dipped into the pool of the Americanized Asian cuisines that dominated before we as a culture came to appreciate the vast regional differences of, you know, a whole continent. To that end, then, there is the pu pu platter, a generous portion that will be fabulous with some editing. Tamarindpeanut spare ribs, all sweet and bright, delivered every bit of the unrestrained pleasures that that teeth-sticking meat is supposed to.

So, too, does the tuna and macadamia poke, essentially a very well-conceived tartare in a lei and a grass skirt, swaying to the luau’s ukulele music. But other dishes struggled to

come through as clearly. Sweet and spicy chicken wings didn’t boast enough of either and struggled to shine though beneath less-than-crispy skin; shrimp and pork toast was so salty as to be difficult to finish and the skirt steak teriyaki was inconsistent— depending on which skewer we chose, it ran the gamut from tender to tough. The flavor, however, all charred and savory, was consistently pleasant.

The fried chicken platter was better as a unified whole. More than that, actually: From the moist meat to the thick crust, the chicken itself is worth coming in for. Alongside the Bud’s Best Pale Ale, brewed up by Yards, this is a bird worth crowing about. Accompanying biscuits are dense yet delicate, and even more memorable with a heartstopping drag through the honey butter.

Just convince yourself that the bracing yet balanced zucchini pickles counter that fat, and you’ll be good to go. That’s what I did, and as a result was able to follow the guidance of my tongue (Eat more!) as opposed to my stomach (You’re getting full—time to slow down!). The B and M wedge salad, with its Nueske’s bacon bits and Thai-basil green goddess dressing, as well as buttermilk blue, somehow felt both retro and contemporary—which is exactly the place where Bud and Marilyn’s feels like it’s at its best.

Like all of the restaurants owned by Valerie Safran and Chef Marcie Turney, there is a real sense of joy to this one, too. That feeling is perhaps best embodied in their dessert cakes, which arrive towering as high as Cindy Wilson’s hair in the old “Love Shack” video. To my left, the conversation of a seemingly new couple was cut short by the arrival of a Funfetti wedge, which ne-

Unfortunately, I never got the opportunity. Because before I was able to fish my phone from my pocket, she had already gone to town on it, ripping her way through a significant portion of the cake before I had a chance to channel my inner Herb Ritts. She was unrepentant and mumbled, through a mouthful of milk-chocolate frosting and mashed up malt balls, that I was too slow—and too bad for me. In the presence of cake this good, apparently, love takes a back seat. I have to agree. n

f you only know Judah Friedlander as that guy on 30 Rock who sports the trucker hats, prepare yourself for a proper introduction: There’s plenty more to the stand-up comic who’s been a fixture on N.Y.C. stages for years.

Like comics! His book of illustrations, If The Raindrops United: Drawings and Cartoons, was released last month and quickly became the number-one comic strip book on Amazon. Friedlander called us from his homebase of Queens to chat before he comes to Philly in early December for a four-day stretch of comedy shows at Helium.

How’s your day going?

It’s busy.

Have you been doing a lot of press interviews today?

That and a million other things.

Are you currently wearing a hat?

basic. And I have a new book of drawings, cartoons. There are some similarities with that and stand-up in that a lot of my drawings are simple, but in the same way, with that bareness, big ideas can come out. And it’s the same way with stand-up. You go to the movies, and you see all these special effects and all this razzle-dazzle. In stand-up, there isn’t that razzle-dazzle. You just have to do your thing.

Tell me more about your book of illustrations, If The Raindrops United. What’s the meaning behind the title?

Well, the drawing is this giant raindrop that’s about 20 blocks in diameter, and it’s crashing down on a city. And it just shows that if all those raindrops in that 10-minute drizzle organized and united, the amount of power they could create is unbelievable. So, it’s a metaphor for people. If they can put aside all their petty differences, they can actually get a lot done.

No, I’m not.

What’s your favorite hat currently?

Well, I just made a new one. It says “World Champion,” but it’s with emojis.

So, a globe …

A globe and a trophy, yeah. I just came up with it myself.

So, stand-up is your first love?

Correct.

How many days a year are you on stage doing stand-up?

Just about every night.

Really?

Stand-up isn’t something, like piano, that you can stay at home and get really good at. Standup has to be done in front of an audience. If you’re not in front of an audience, you’re not doing stand-up. Plus, I enjoy it.

Do you look back at what you’ve done in years past and see the evolution?

Oh, yeah. My act is always growing and changing. I’m 46; I started when I was 19. So, yeah—it’s changed immensely. And it still is.

My act has changed a lot, even in the last few years.

What makes stand-up so appealing to you?

One thing I like about it? The rawness and simplicity of it. There’s no special effects. It’s just you talking, people sitting there listening.

You make an immediate connection. It’s very

How long have you been drawing?

I drew a lot as a kid, did animation in high school and in my 20s, and I kinda stopped somewhere in my 20s for quite a while. Then somewhere around nine years ago, I started doing some drawing and painting again, and I stopped again—and then a couple of years ago, I really started drawing a lot. Stand-up is my main thing, and that takes up a lot of time and is my main focus. The past couple of years, I was touring so much and traveling so much, I had this downtime, and instead of watching a movie or whatever, I just started drawing again.

Are you a fan of comics?

I am. It’s usually serious stuff. I read the Maus book by Art Spiegelman, and I haven’t read both of them yet, but I read the first in the series of graphic novels called March about the civil rights movement. I think when drawings or comics or graphic novels are done well, the visual and words can really work together to form something quite powerful. I think sometimes it’s done not well, and you don’t really need the words or the visuals; it’s like they’re just there. But when you have a marriage of the two, where they really come together, they can create their own thing where they don’t work separately—they need each other—that can be quite powerful.

How did you feel about the public reception of the book?

With the internet, it’s so hard to tell. There are so many trolls, you know? But most people I’ve showed it to like it a lot. I think the book has a lot of laughs and a lot of heavy thoughts and deep meaning, too. But the internet is such a weird place, where I noticed the bullying and the trolling that goes on, and the lying that goes on the internet is just rampant. I’ve had some negative comments about the book and for other things, and they’re from people that never even saw it. They’re just liars and bullies. And that even happens not just in the comment pages, but people [who] are giving reviews. I think on the internet, you not only

have your amateur bullies but your professional ones. You have your regular trolls who are unpaid, and you actually have paid trolls. There’s a lot of hate on the internet. It’s very weird.

Do you think it’s made us more mean as a culture, or has it allowed that part of us that was there to have an outlet?

I think it might be both, actually. There’s more opportunity for them to hone their skills. With a heckler, I just tell them to shut up, but with that anonymity, you can just do that 24 hours a day, and some of them can actually make money doing it.

Has it changed how you interact online?

With a comic, it’s different. If there’s someone out of line in the audience and a heckler, you deal with it right away, but generally online, it’s best to just ignore. When you’re dealing with a troll, there aren’t other people there to be on your side, and their only goal is to be an asshole. They don’t care about truth or anything.

Not sure if this is a good time to ask, but, what are your thoughts on Philly?

I like Philly.

You’re close by, right? You’ll be spending some time here soon. Is it a different vibe for you than your homebase of New York?

New York has gotten so upscale and so corporate, and Philly does not seem as corporate and upscale. New York used to be much more blue-collar, more diverse. It’s gotten less that way over the years. New York is also more international; it’s a bigger tourist city.

Audiences can be more diverse that way,

but Philly audiences are cool. I think from like D.C. to Boston, all through, [have] really good audiences.

Same culture?

Slight variances. Baltimore, Philly, a little less PC, a little less stuffy than D.C. might be.

And that’s often better for comedy. People have an open mind.

So, will your show be featuring new material?

Yeah. New material, a little bit of old stuff, and I make up a lot on the fly.

Any plans to bring the stand-up and the illustration together in some sort of hybrid act?

I was thinking of doing that. I’ve been toying with that idea because I am doing a book tour, too, and when I do that, I don’t do my stand-up; I do about an hour presentation with a Powerpoint, where I show different drawings from the book and talk about them.

So I’m thinking [of] maybe, towards the end of my show, doing a short, five-minute projected Powerpoint presentation of several funny drawings from the book. I don’t know if I’ll do that, but I’m thinking of it.

I also want to say this about Philly: I feel like Philly, over the recent years, has gotten a little more artsy and artistic with the art community, and New York over the last few years has gotten less artistic. New York has gotten so gentrified over the years. But I dig the art scene in Philly.

im Kenney was still just a candidate for Philadelphia mayor— not the actual mayor-elect— when Philly Weekly caught up with him on All Hallows’ Eve during a “Get Out the Vote” bar crawl through the Gayborhood, on which Kenney was “reminding them to vote for my race and the Supreme Court, which is probably more important than my race at this point.” (Hey, it must’ve worked!) Standing outside Tavern on Camac, the affable, always approachable former city councilman told us about the comics he used to read as a kid—and why he wouldn’t be dressing up as Donald Trump for Halloween.

There’s no such thing as a favorite restaurant. They’re all great. You can’t pick one.

I know, I know.

It’s like being a judge in a baby contest.

[Laughs] Is there a favorite drink at a specific place you like to order?

Or a favorite meal?

There’s so much—I mean, whether you’re in South Philly or Center City or North Fifth Street or up in Oak Lane. I like Relish in Oak Lane; I like Tierra Colombiana on North Fifth Street, Estia in Center City. Panorama at Front and Market … Vietnam, Veracruzana. [There’s] just so much food.

So, no specific cuisine?

No. You just gotta mix it up.

Any dressing up for Halloween?

No. I was thinking about it, but I didn’t come up with anything that I really liked. Last year I was the Pope, which was really a lot of fun. The Henri David Ball was a blast. The year before, I was Beetlejuice, but nothing this year. Nothing really hit me.

Trump?

I was thinking about it, but my staff, for some reason, talked me out of it. n

From geek girl to business boss Ariell Johnson’s long-awaited Amalgam Comics & Coffeehouse is set to open soon.

S

elf-proclaimed fangirl Ariell Johnson was crushed when the coffee shop across from her favorite comic book store closed down. She would always make a beeline for the place, loot in hand, ready to delve into the latest edition of her favorite series. Instead of staying mired in disappointment, Johnson decided it was up to her to create the next best thing: the comic book/coffee shop hybrid Amalgam Comics & Coffeehouse, a hub where area geeks could enjoy comics and community, grab a cookie or cupcake and dig right in. Her dream is officially becoming a reality, partly because of the success of her crowdfunding campaign— complete with a hilariously awesome promotional video.

The trained barista and seasoned baker took some time away from the almost-complete construction of the warehouse space on Frankford Avenue that will soon be Amalgam to chat with Philly Weekly about both her passion and her passion project, which will be opening its doors soon.

What were your favorite comic books growing up?

I started reading comics in high school. XMen was, by far, my favorite. I’m still a huge X-Men fangirl. I grew up watching things like He-Man, She-Ra and Thundercats, and I just never grew out of it—no one should ever grow out of it. I like super powers and magic swords apparently. [Laughs]

Were there any particular characters you identified with most?

Oh, most definitely! Storm. Storm all the way.

I fell in love with Storm from watching the ‘90s Fox cartoon series. Like I said, I always liked superheroes, but Storm was the first superhero that looked like me—aside from the white hair and blue eyes. Something about seeing her on screen unlocked a door in my brain, and my imagination ran wild because she made me feel like I could be a superhero.

She is the reason I really got into comics. I wanted to know more about her.

Where did the idea to start Amalgam come from?

I got the idea for Amalgam back in 2003. I was a sophomore at Temple. Even though new-comic day is Wednesday, when I was in college, I wouldn’t go to the comic book store until Friday. A sort of reward for a week

of hard work. I was a Fat Jack’s girl, and right across the street from Fat Jack’s was this really cool and chill coffee shop called Crimson Moon. I loved this spot so much. I would buy my comics for the week, and then head over there, buy a hot chocolate and a piece of cake and just read everything that I bought. When Crimson Moon closed, I was really upset about it; I really loved the atmosphere... So then I started thinking about how cool it would be if there was a place where you could not only buy comics, but also chill out there and read them. I pitched the idea to my college roommate and friend Corin, and she thought it was a good idea too, and so it began.

You crowdfunded the start-up capital through a Kickstarter campaign.

Would you say it was a success?

I think our crowdfunding campaign was a big success! Raising money for a business is really hard. Most successful crowdfunding campaigns are for art-type projects or new product innovations, but raising money to open a business is a bit more difficult. The advice I would give is to start promoting your business before the crowdfunding campaign. Get people excited so they want to support your project when your campaign goes live. Make a fun video. Our campaign ended back in March, and I still get feedback about that video. People have even asked if we will be making other videos in the future.

A good video keeps people engaged, and hopefully they will watch it to the end and donate to the project. Also, ask people directly. Social media is great, but I think asking people directly makes them feel needed.

Most people that I asked directly gave—and gave happily. You never know until you ask.

How is the construction coming along?

Do you have a tentative opening date?

Construction has been the most stressful part by far. We’ve had delays along the way, but we are nearing the end now. The actual construction should be completed by the end of next week. Then we’ll hustle to get the shelves stocked and the doors open. Our tentative soft opening date is Nov. 28, which is also Small Business Saturday. We will be having a grand opening, but that will be a little later. Most likely in the new year. n

Digging up cartoon treasure with Locust Moon’s Josh O’Neill.

ou can’t talk comics in Philly without bringing Josh O’Neill into the conversation. The owner of Locust Moon Comics, the iconic West Philly comic shop, press and gallery, O’Neill, with partner Chris Stevens, has been a leading advocate on the local comics scene, publishing new artists while keeping the comic past in print.

From this month’s comics festival at the Rotunda to Halloween’s “Drink and Draw” at the Art Museum, O’Neill is perpetually planning comic-themed events around town.

Philly Weekly caught up with him to find out about a new effort Locust Moon is taking on that has some very old roots.

Tell us about this new project.

It’s the very earliest comics by Will Eisner.

Will Eisner’s maybe the most important cartoonist of all time. He’s one of the forefathers of modern cartooning. A few years ago, a collector in New Jersey, just outside of Philly, discovered—in this giant collection of printing plates from the 1930s—comics that Eisner did when he was 16 years old. It’s like finding Shakespeare’s notebook. It’s wild. It’s 100 daily comic strips that he’s doing. Most of them were never published at all, but you can literally see him clicking off all these different influences, putting them down, experimenting with different styles and gradually turning into the grown-up cartoonist that he became. It’s fascinating stuff.

What are these strips all about?

There are two strips. There’s Uncle Otto, and the other one’s called Harry Karry. Harry Karry is the most interesting one. It’s like a spy strip. The main character is like a secret agent—it’s one continuing story, but the tone of it changes so wildly. It starts out like slapstick comedy, but then out of nowhere— actually like in the middle of one of the strips—the art style completely changes, and the vibe of it completely changes. It becomes serious stuff, and at the end, [Eisner] starts to blend in some swashbuckling adventure stuff. So, by the time he gets to the end of it, it starts to look a lot like The Spirit, [which] he became famous for in the ‘40s.

Do these pieces look like some drawings by a teenager?

You can see that he’s massively talented for

a teenager. But he’s incredibly derivative when he starts out. What you can see is that he’s incredibly good at aping all these styles.

It does not look like the work of a teenager at all, but an adult artist. It doesn’t have that brilliant originality yet that his work seemed to have, but the incredible thing is you can see him developing that.

And what’s your role in all of this?

I’m the publisher. A friend of ours is friends with this guy that found all the stuff, and he said, “You gotta see these crates he has.” So, we went out to his studio, and our minds— mine and my partner’s—were just completely blown. We were like, “Yeah, this stuff has to be out there.” So, we talked to Denis Kitchen, who is the executor of the estate and was sort of [Eisner’s] agent back when he was alive; he’s writing an introduction for us, and we’re going to launch the Kickstarter [Tuesday], and we’ll publish it through Locust Moon.

How does this speak about your mission as a publishing house?

This is our first archival project, but a lot of the comics we’ve done harken back to the past. And having the ability to crowdsource makes these projects possible because we’re able to find people from around the world who are equally passionate about these projects and these artists. Although a lot of the material is science-fiction based and talks about the future, it’s also very interesting to see how artists viewed the future in the past.

So, we really enjoy that aspect—bouncing between the past and the future. We still love supporting new talent, too, though. That part of our job never gets old.

Get Personal with Dr. Ruth The famed sexologist has events in Philly on Monday and Tuesday.

I

’m often asked why I went into sexuality education. Folks in financial planning or drywall installation are asked this less often, I presume, which is confusing, since the appeal of those gigs seems far less obvious. The reasons to go into sexuality are pretty clear: It’s an endlessly fascinating topic which intersects with history, psychology, art, politics, medicine and every other facet of life. It’s one of the things people think about every single day—and a major motivation for a lot of our behavior.

Sex can be the source of unparalleled pleasure or supreme pain, and many of the pioneers in the sexuality field have been driven by a desire to prevent and ease pain while amplifying access to pleasure.

Such is the story of Dr. Ruth Westheimer, a woman who rose from tragedy to become one of the biggest names in sexology. I had the pleasure of speaking with her last week about her trajectory and the way her work has evolved over the last 35 years.

Born in Frankfort, Germany in 1928, Karola Ruth Siegel grew up in an Orthodox Jewish family that was torn apart by the Nazis in 1933. She survived the Holocaust by being sent to a Swiss school, but the rest of her kin most likely perished in Auschwitz. Alone and displaced by the war, she migrated repeatedly, including a move at the age of 17 to Israel. There, she began to go by the name Ruth and joined the Haganah, an underground Jewish resistance fighting force, as a sharpshooter.

Several careers, husbands and boyfriends later, she emigrated to America, where she worked and took night classes in New York. After a few years at Planned Parenthood, she was inspired to dive deeper into the study of human sexuality, eventually earning a Masters and Ed.D. “I was well trained by Helen Singer Kaplan,” Westheimer told me, referencing the founder of the first U.S. clinic for sexual disorders, who also devised a three-phase model of arousal that built off the one devised by pioneering researchers Bill Masters and Virginia Johnson. Westheimer’s education as a sexual psychotherapist was solid, but it was her refreshing candor and charming personality that set her apart from other experts.

She rocketed to fame in the early ‘80s with her Sunday night radio show Sexually Speaking on New York’s WYNY-FM. It gained popularity immediately, as audiences were drawn to Westheimer’s frank manner of answering listener questions, as well as her adorable accent. “I was very fortunate,” she says humbly. “I was in the right place at the right time.” As her show gained steam, the diminutive, bespectacled Westheimer became synonymous with the word “sexpert.” While many researchers and activists have faced tremendous opprobrium for daring to speaking openly about sexuality, she never had much pushback, she claims. “I’m very old-fashioned, so people realized I meant what I said.

It wasn’t just to be titillating.”

Asked what has changed in her audiences over the decades, Westheimer says, “The questions have remained the same: seeking satisfaction, dealing with loneliness, looking for help finding the right partner. But people have become more open about issues.” An ongoing challenge is to empower women to take responsibility for their pleasure and to teach their partners what they like.

Today, Westheimer continues her crusade to increase sexual literacy with two new books: The Doctor Is In: Dr Ruth on Life, Love and Joie de Vivre and an eponymous children’s book about a turtle named Leopold, which intends to encourage kids to be brave and take risks. She also continues with regular sex advice columns, as well as lectures at colleges and public events, including two upcoming appearances in Philadelphia.

On Tues., Nov. 17, she’ll be giving a talkback at the Walnut Street Theater after the opening night of Becoming Dr. Ruth, a play about her life. “I’m very happy about it,” she declares. “It’s been successful in other cities, and I’m excited to have it at the oldest theater in the United States.”

The night before, she’ll be at the National Museum of American Jewish History, giving a lecture entitled Dreamers and Doers, sponsored by WHYY—and she strongly encourages everyone to join her. “It’s okay if you’re nervous,” says Westheimer. “You can always say that you have a friend who has this question.” n

I

’m a hetero guy in need of advice.

Back in college, I met this girl. Suffice it to say she was into me but I had some shit to work through. So we ended up being a missed connection, romantically. Despite that, we still became fast friends. I’m less awkward now, in large part because our friendship changed my life. We each married other people, and everything worked out great. Except I still love her. I think about her often, want to share things about my life with her, find myself wanting to rely on her when things are tough. I don’t know what to do with it.

On one hand, she means an awful lot to me—she is the kind of friend that comes along once in a lifetime—and I know that I mean a lot to her. So this is a relationship worth protecting, even as asymmetrical as it is. On the other hand, these feelings are starting to seem kind of pathetic.

We are barely part of each other’s lives anymore—do I even have a right to feel the way I do? I see three options, each of which is shit. (1) Keep my feelings to myself and endure/enjoy a painful but deeply meaningful friendship. (2) Disappear, either abruptly or gradually, with no explanation. Or (3) damn the torpedoes and bare my soul, which might painfully explode the relationship. After years of option 1, I am strongly leaning toward option 3—just blowing shit wide open and dealing with whatever happens. —No Good At Acronyms

And not just any gay dude who obsesses about Broadway musicals, but the kind of Broadway-musical-obsessed gay dude who has good taste. (Look through his record collection: If Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is in there and Mame isn’t, he does not have good taste.)

Okay, here’s my advice: Listen to the original Broadway cast recordings of Company, Follies and A Little Night Music—music and lyrics, in all three cases,

Yes, you can get all three recordings on iTunes, NGAA, but you need to listen to them on vinyl, and you need to discuss these shows, and three songs in particular, with someone who already knows them by heart. Hence the need for a gay dude with good taste in Broadway musicals and an extensive collection of original Broadway cast recordings—

on vinyl. As any Broadway-musical-obsessed gay man will tell you: Epiphanies, insights and breakthroughs come most reliably in moments of silence, i.e., when you have to flip the record over.

Here are the songs you need to pay close attention to: “Sorry-Grateful” from Company, “The Road You Didn’t Take” from Follies, and “Send in the Clowns” from A Little Night Music. (You might be a little too fragile for “Too Many Mornings” and “Losing My Mind,” both from Follies.) Listen over and over again—until you know the lyrics of all three songs by heart. Discuss what these songs mean with your new gay friend. Then you’ll know what to do.

Jordan Burroughs | TeamUSA.org/awards Greater Philadelphia-area native Jordan Burroughs has been nominated for Male Olympic Athlete of the Year at this year’s Team USA Best of the Year Awards, which recognizes the outstanding achievements of Team USA athletes year-round. Burroughs, who grew up in Camden and wrestled first at Winslow High School, went undefeated to claim his third world championship title in 2015. The third-most winningest wrestler in U.S. history, with only two defeats in his whole career so far, he brought home the goal at the 2012 London Olympics and hopes to do the same next year. Brittany Everett recently opened Grace & Glory Yoga, a power yoga studio in Fishtown. According to Everett, GGY’s style is inspired by master teacher Baron Baptiste and delivers a “vigorous physical practice that is adaptable to every body type.” We think that translates into some hardcore yoga. Expect to sweat. Everett herself has been practicing Baptiste Power Yoga for over three years and completed her yoga teacher training program with Grace and Glory Yoga in May 2014. A born and raised Jersey shore girl who’s been calling Philly home for a little over a year now, Everett says she’s excited to collaborate with her Fishtown neighbors.

And although there’s no word yet if she’s recruited Fette Sau for a yoga sesh-barbeque combo, they are offering Make Friends Monday, all-level open community classes for five bucks a pop. —J.R.
