Bon appetit, people: Taste of Philly returns

W

hat do Liscio’s Bakery, North Shore Beach Club, Los Camaradas, Bourbon Blue, Valanni’s and Crow and The Pitcher all have in common? They’ll be among the local restaurants, bars and foodstuff specialists set to be on hand in the swanky Crystal Tea Room for Philly Weekly’s ninth annual Taste of Philly, the autumn sampling soiree that’s been attracting soldout crowds of over 1,200 people for years now. What makes this one special? Not only will there be a VIP area and dozens of sampling stations dispensing an array of appetizer-sized bites of some of the tastiest menu items on offer at select spots across town, but attendees will also have their say as to who’s got the most delicious fare via Taste of Philly’s first “best-of” contest. If there’s one thing Philadelphians have to spare, solicited or not, it’s opinions. And they’ll be put to some great use on this fun, festive evening, a portion of which benefit Philabundance, the largest food bank and hunger relief organization in the Delaware Valley.

And since there’s such a wide swath of participants from which to satisfy whatever craving you’ve got—from savory to sweet—you won’t feel like you’re missing a single thing. And you won’t be, especially as you’re swaying to the sounds of DJ Dan Cronin and DJ Joe Broscoe, with live entertainment by Tim Williams.

oug Hager, owner of Brauhaus Schmitz, gave Philly Weekly some advice recently from behind the bar on why there should always be a place in your beer lineup for a classic German import. He does all the beer buying at Brauhaus and travels to Germany to meet with brewers there, so we thought he’d be a good guy to ask.

Without a doubt, Oktoberfest is my favorite beer right now! It’s the original fall beer since it’s brewed in March, specifically for Festival Season at harvest time. It’s amber in color, malty and pushing 6 percent ABV. It’s the perfect beer for a crisp fall afternoon. Ayinger [Brewery] makes the best one in my opinion—just has a slightly higher malt kick than the others, plus it’s only available once a year. When it’s gone, I am already looking forward to next fall.

There are two big differences between German beers and local ones.

First, the Germans have been perfecting these beers for 500 years! Second, the Germans are all about balance. Typically, German beers are designed to be well-rounded. So, no character of the beer should dominate. That means they aren’t super hoppy, not too sweet or sour and rarely is the alcohol very noticeable. Balance is the key to a beer that you will drink again and again. While some of the stuff American craft brewers are doing is very interesting and progressive, the Germans prefer to keep their beers in balance, so they appeal to everyone. But, it’s great to support local breweries! Places like Neshaminy [Creek], Victory and Stoudt’s make delicious stuff modeled after German beers.

It’s just always a good idea to drink the true import here and there, if for no other reason than as a baseline.

Victory is making some great German varieties. I love their Festbier, as well as Prima Pils. Stoudt’s has always done a decent job giving a nod to Germany, ever since Carol Stoudt smuggled the yeast from Germany into the country years ago! Creek] has a passion for German lagers, and he’s making some great stuff. Making quality lagers is more expensive and time consuming than IPAs. These brewers do it because they recognize the importance of German lagers to the beer world. To them, it’s a labor of love.

In terms of the kinds of food you can pair with a German beer with for the fall, really anything smoky: pork, sausage, sauerkraut.

You just can’t beat a malty Oktoberfest with a giant pork knuckle with cracklins or a plate of bratwurst— and a little Oompah music doesn’t hurt either!

When we opened Brauhaus Schmitz, with 20 taps, we struggled to keep them full with a variety of styles from different breweries.

Now, we have 30 taps, and it’s the opposite. There are so many different German beers available in our area that it’s difficult to keep all of our suppliers happy! We went from a pool of about 40 beers to choose from to about 150-plus.

And new beers from Germany are still entering the market, so we are doing our best to give all of them the spotlight they deserve. But, we need some help.

We are out of space! Maybe we just need another Brauhaus. Who knows?

Want to correctly pronounce those long, complicated German names? Here’s Doug’s guide: First thing you do is drink a couple German beers, maybe a schnaps. Then, you have to remember a couple key things about the German language: Vowels are tricky. “IE” is pronounced hard E, like in the word “see.” “EI” is hard I, like in the word “eye.”

J’s are pronounced “yeh.” W’s are pronounced like V’s. V’s are pronounced like F’s, and the rest is just phonetic.

Just sound out the letters. So, a very popular Pilsner is Jever [Pilsener], and it’s pronounced “yehfer.” The oldest brewery in the world is Weihenstephan, pronounced “V-eye-hen-stefan.”

Now, let’s talk about umlauts ... you know what? Forget it. Just stop in, and enjoy some of the amazing German beers we have, and we can work on it together. It’s more fun that way. PROST! n

If I could save Wu-Tang in a bottle

I

n my dreams, I threw down as many Wu-Tang puns I could access from the early-‘90s recesses of my mind when detailing Dock Street Brewery’s new WuTang Clan-inspired beer. But rather than have you endure my attempts at finding clever, beer-related ways to incorporate lines like “I rip it hardcore, like pornoflick bitches,” I thought I should play it slightly more chill and let the West Philly brewing mainstay have all the allusionary fun. Meet Dock Street’s latest offering, dubbed Ain’t Nothin to Funk With, which is hitting the taps at their homebase brewpub today, celebrated via an evening bash that’ll feature DJ Matthew Law spinning Wu-Tang Clan jams galore, followed by a screening of the ‘80s kung fu classic Shaolin and Wu-Tang, the film that was the inspiration behind the band’s name and lyrical concepts.

Ain’t Nothing to Funk With will be available on tap at Dock Street and to go (with a two-bottle limit) while supplies last. We pulled their brewer, Sasha Certo-Ware, away from the tanks to find out how exactly one bottles the Wu.

Give us a little background on how this concept for a Wu-Tang Clan beer got started.

Vince [Desrosiers], the head brewer here, and myself had been working on a way to incorporate music into our brewing since we’re both huge music people. We decided to start with Wu-Tang. I know there have been beers made where people throw some speakers underneath the barrels, but we wanted to take it one step further. I was reading up on yeast health and vibration and how stimuli affects the yeast. So we decided to make custom-fit “headphones” for the yeast,

and we created a 600-song playlist on Spotify that played on continuous loop for six months.

I know a lot of people might think it’s gimmicky, but there is some science here. The yeast are living organisms; temperature, pressure, light, vibration all play a part in how the yeast grows and what the beer ultimately tastes like.

If this beer was one of the 36 chambers, which would it be?

All of them. This is a golden saison, and it was put in red wine barrels for six months while the Wu played. We actually filled another barrel, but did not place “headphones” on that barrel. With beer, it’s really hard to have a baseline because small differences can throw off your control, but the Wu beer is noticeably more tart and more sour.

A lot like the Wu? A lot like the Wu.

What would an Ol’ Dirty Bastard beer taste like?

Jeez, no idea. Probably strong and clever.

We’ve gotten some good reaction from members of the band. We’ve been VIPs to their shows, and their manager reached out to us. Inspectah Deck will be coming by for the release; all of the members have been really on board with the idea.

Trust, taste and be tantalized Fall tasting menus are a sublime way to surprise—and delight— yourself at the city’s top restaurants.

A

few weeks ago, after a long and traffic-clogged drive back from Washington D.C., my wife and I needed a good drink and a great bite to eat to calm our Beltway-frayed nerves.

We pulled off of I-95, wound our way to Society Hill and, after a remarkably short wait, settled into two seats at the bar at Zahav. I had been craving the restaurant’s hummus since reading the cookbook we reviewed in these pages a few weeks ago.

Our game plan was to have a cocktail or three, maybe a couple of light dishes from the menu, then head home to lick our wounds. What happened instead was a nearly two-hour demonstration of why Michael Solomonov and his team are producing some of the most exciting food in the region right now—and a reminder of why so many of our friends have been swooning over the restaurant’s two tasting menus lately.

Over the course of our time at the bar, Solomonov sent out a number of dishes that we otherwise might not have tasted which ended up being among our favorites of the meal. This, it turns out, is one of the great advantages of choosing a tasting menu at a restaurant: The opportunity to experience foods and flavors that you otherwise may not have had you stuck with the more traditional appetizer-

entree-dessert format. And with autumn food season in full swing, tasting menus all over town are hitting their sweet spot of cool-weather deliciousness.

At Zahav, for $45, guests can enjoy the Tayim option, which includes the justifiably famous salatim and hummus with perfectly blistered laffa, two mezze small plates, one coal-grilled ha’esh dish and a dessert. For $9 more, the Mesibah “party time” menu includes, in addition to the salatim and hummus, a range of mezze and roasted lamb shoulder with chickpeas and pomegranates that, every time one came out of the kitchen all glistening and burnished, turned the heads of the entire bar and dining room, as if the guests were following a tennis ball at Wimbledon.

At Abe Fisher, look for further additions to their tasting menu items, like a Brussels sprout Caesar salad with pine nuts, baby kale, pickled onion, pumpernickel bread croutons, pecorino, grapes and anchovy dressing, plus an allspiceperfumed apple honey cake with candied pecans and spiced whipped cream.

A quick walk over to Old City’s Fork finds a $110 tasting menu of nine courses, plus an additional $65 for wine pairings.

As always, the food at Fork is creative and comforting in equal measure. Think

Delaware River smoked eel with creme fraiche, garlic scapes, pickled ramps, inhouse farmers cheese, a soft scrambled egg and potato bread all toasty and comforting, and an espresso-rubbed venison from Highbourne Farm with pine mushrooms, pickled spruce and celery root jam.

The widely and warmly loved Bibou is operating on a strictly prix fixe policy now, featuring seven courses at $100 per guest. The menu changes weekly and is posted on biboubyob.com every Sunday.

The week of this writing, standout dishes like bacalao cream soup with soubise salardaise and a deeply autumnal foie gras with creme caramel, red wine duck sauce, smoked candied pumpkin and pumpkin bread were on deck.

Talula’s Daily features a monthly tasting menu for $55 with a $35 supplement for a beverage pairing. November’s menu boasts a made-to-order autumn Caesar with the ingenious addition of fried fall herbs and walnuts, among other more traditional accouterments, plus a fontina fonduta with grissini and Prosecco pears.

Laurel, as always, is offering a supremely appealing one, too. Theirs is $85 per guest and is BYOB. Check with the restaurant for the most recent offerings at restaurantlaurel.com. Not far from there, Fond offers a five-course menu for $59 and seven courses for $69, with wine pairings an additional $25 and $30, respectively.

The menu changes regularly, but the one I had this past summer has stuck with me ever since. Any restaurant that can make a rich foie gras dish appealing amid the

season’s heat is clearly doing something very right.

Sbraga is, as always, offering its excellent four-course menu, with autumn additions like the four-hour-brined Berkshire pork chop for two with black eyed peas, Swiss chard and apple sauce, and Arctic char with red-pepper puree, almond and squash. The Fat Ham is offering a Sunday Supper menu ($30 for nine dishes) that includes a changes-by-the-week “Chef’s choice roast” and squash dumplings with toasted pecans and Granny Smith apples.

(Note: I consulted on the wine lists for both Talula’s and Sbraga.)

Volver has welcomed the season with both 12- and eight-course sittings. Look for creative, evocative dishes like lamb tartare with a frozen buttermilk vinaigrette, pickled blueberry and juniper; swordfish with black garlic, hibiscus, turnip and a beet bordelaise and the fantasy-inducing Iberico Wellington. Uptown a bit, Zama will be rolling out a tasting menu that runs $125 per person for nine courses: Wagyu five ways, smoked kanpachi with ponzu and shellfish chirashi, among others, are worth looking forward to. For $90 per guest, Marigold Kitchen is offering meals between 13 and 15 courses, and none of the details will be available until you actually sit at the table and tuck into it all.

With this many choices—and so many more!—none of us have any excuse to put off packing on the cold-weather pounds immediately. Which, personally speaking, is always one of the highlights of the season. It’s time to start eating. n

Abe Fisher’s Yehuda Sichel meshes old, new traditions

A

be Fisher has been the buzzworthy restaurant of the summer, but despite its trendiness, head chef Yehuda Sichel assures us he’s staying away from any fads. We caught up with the “sexy new Jewish cooking” chef to talk tradition, apples and why he might be offering one of the best Hanukkah gifts this year.

How do you feel about the reception Abe Fisher has received from the city?

I’m very happy with the reception. I feel like whether they are familiar with Jewish cuisine or not at all, people have been very trusting, and that’s good. Because you can have people that have never had Jewish food before and are obviously skeptical about it, but you also have people who grew up on it that are skeptical about people “reinventing” it. Either way, we have people that trust us, and I think that’s huge.

How do you create something new, yet stay within such a beloved cuisine? For so many, it’s about the tradition. I think the goal is to always, as crazy as it sounds, just to make it better. When people sit down like, “Oh, chopped liver? My grandmother used to make chopped liver,” as long as, at the end of the day, it’s better, they’ll want to keep coming back. We’re not reinventing things just for the sake of being different. We’re actually trying to come in from a different angle and just use the techniques that I’ve learned over the years, that Mike [Solomonov] learned over the years, and we end up with a really good product. And we always stay true; it always starts with a story.

Did you draw upon your family’s traditions? I think that when we come up with dishes, a lot of it has to do with childhood memories. And especially if Mike and Steve [Cook] are at the table with me. Steve grew up in a similar type of Ashkenazi Jewish family; Mike was more Sephardic.

Steve almost grew up before me, so it was different and in more of a conservative home. I grew up in an orthodox home, so we grew up around similar things. There is some difference there, but we do always start with childhood memories.

Is there one dish that instantly transports you back to your past? There’s a few. Our cholent pie … like a Jewish Saturday-morning stew, I grew up eating every single Saturday, whether it was my house or someone else’s house. We sort of reinvented that by like making it into a pot pie. It will be on the menu this winter. I’m probably going to do it with some lamb instead of beef, but that’s re-

ally nostalgic to me.

What are some of your favorite fall ingredients? I really like apples and carrots. I know everyone loves apples, but they’re just so versatile. They’re so good raw, they’re good cooked. Right now, I’m putting apples in a beef tongue salad, and we have an apple and honey cake, and we’re moving into doing an apple crisp with raisins and pomegranates. Carrots are maybe my favorite vegetable to cook with because they can be so sweet and so savory. I also like that now I can really play with some stews and some braised items and food that is a little more familiar to the Eastern part of what we’re doing.

That’s always fun.

Any fall foods, seasonal trends or even general food trends that you feel are overused? I don’t know. Maybe I should be in with the current events of what other people are doing. To be honest, I do go out, but I usually stick to Chinatown or something. I do read a lot, but maybe I don’t know what is trendy. I try to set the trend.

So, Chinatown is your spot? Chinatown all the way.

Any recommendations? Oh, yeah: I love Tai Lake and Red Kings Number Two is really good. I’m sure Number One is good too, but i haven’t tried it.

What’s your favorite dish at Abe Fisher? I would say I do love our sweet potato dish. [It’s] sweet potato and some brown sugar, and we serve it on some boursin cheese with pickled long hot peppers and smoked walnuts. And it’s vegetarian, not even intentionally, just because it’s good that way.

Anything new for winter on the horizon? In terms of the menu, we’re always changing. I try to be ahead of it at least like a month or two. I love to shift to more wintery foods. To me, it’s more comforting to eat those types of foods, soups and stews, and there’s always the challenge of refining it. And we’re going in that direction for winter. We are doing something for Hanukkah, a special tasting menu for the first night. It hasn’t been super publicized yet, but it will be for the first night of Hanukkah. It’s Dec. 6, $50 per person— four courses including dessert, which includes a latke tasting course. We’re sticking to one potato latke and switching up the toppings. One is going to be sour cream and caviar, one scrambled egg, cheddar and truffle, and another roasted lamb leg, applesauce and horseradish. n

Dinner with Luke Palladino L

uke Palladino recently opened LP Steak, a new steakhouse at the Valley Forge Casino. It’s familiar territory for the restaurateur/chef who began his business pursuits with restaurants in the Borgata. We visited his East Passyunk spot to try out the new fall dinner menu. As Palladino divided his time between fixing up the new dishes in the kitchen and detailing his creations in the dining room, we learned more about his passion for ingredients and how to make the fluffiest focaccia ever.

Veal and Sweetbread Ravioli Sausage Polenta Pasticciata

This is one of my classic dishes. It was one of the top dishes on our menu, and we did it so much I put it to rest for about eight years, but everytime I bring it out, I realize how good it is. Esquire picked it up one year as one of the greatest dishes of the year.

Pasticciata in Italian means “a mess”—yes “a mess”–“que es pasticciata: what a mess you made.” The idea is with the polenta and gorgonzola cheese and the pork sausage, it all bubbles together, and it’s all combined. Everything sinks in together. What’s cool about it is, the polenta we use, it’s called “Bloody Butcher Polenta.” There’s no pig’s blood or anything, though. It’s an heirloom strain of corn that’s actually red corn and comes out purple. We get it from a farm in Jersey, and everyone says that it’s the best polenta they’ve ever tasted.

These are veal ravioli, and these are made with veal and veal sweetbreads in a mushroom broth. The sweetbreads, which is veal throat, give this dish it’s rich flavor. It’s one of my favorite dishes because of the subtle flavors of the veal with the mushrooms, and the sauce uses the sauce from the roast and wild mushrooms, along with shaved Piave Stagionato cheese, similar to Parmigiano Reggiano, but still unique.

Focaccia Tartufo Lamb Ribs

I like, as the weather gets colder, of course, more hearty foods. You wouldn’t want to eat the polenta in the summer because it makes you warm. The lamb ribs are deep fried with a mostarda glaze, rosemary and goat cheese crema, which makes them just addictive. The lamb has a very distinct flavor. I wouldn’t call it gamey, but it has a distinct flavor, and I think the fruit and goat cheese really stands up to the flavors.

It does have a bit of that sweet and savory mix you find in say Indian cuisine. I love Indian food; I’m crazy for the spice. I don’t have to go out to eat Indian much at all; I have good friends who cook indian, and I think it’s all great.

This is the focaccio. The Focaccia di Recco, the basic version of this, is in two layers.

There’s stracchino cheese, which is a creamy cow’s milk cheese, very fresh and soft.

We do two layers with olive oil and salt, and we bake it at 700 degrees. And we do some variations. This one has stracchino cheese, truffle sottocenere cheese and wild mushrooms. I lived in New York and Boston, Cape Cod, San Francisco, New Orleans and Florida. I was in Italy for five years, traveling all over, north and south. Abruzzo is where my family is from. When you go to Southern Italy, you get more vegetables than protein. Chefs come in, and they taste it, and they swear, “Dude, you got butter in this.” But there’s no butter; it’s just the olive oil. Warm water, italian flour, salt and extra virgin olive oil—that’s it. That’s all you need for great focaccio. n

he Philadelphia Film Festival concluded a few days ago, but there’s still lots of cinema magic to be explored and celebrated here, underscored by the simultaneously-running Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival, which starts Saturday, and the upcoming Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival, set to begin next Thursday, Nov. 12.

The Gershman Y is presenting their annual fest for the 35th year, with the lofty aim of “[perpetuating] Jewish values, culture and history through the medium of film. Showing 21 films from nine different countries over a span of 15 days, the PJFF is set to enjoy its biggest, most successful iteration to date, thanks to notable, gamechanging entries guaranteed to captivate audiences, including the 2014 French masterpiece To Life (À La Vie), a historical drama focusing on three friends who reconnect 15 years after surviving the Holocaust, and Natasha—showing at the Ritz East—which chronicles a forbidden romance between 16-year-old Mark Berman and his uncle’s Russian mail-order bride.

Many of the screened films will be followed by panel discussions featuring their respective directors and starring actors, along with food and drinks for attendees.

Established in 2008, the goals of the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival, according to officials, is to “educate and expose the Philadelphia region to films by and about Asian Americans.”

Well, this year’s confab—its eighth—aims to do that in spades over 11 days, screening more than 60 films at multiple locations and packed full with everything from panel discussions to cooking demonstrations. “It’s a special year for us,” says Rob Buscher, the festival’s director, noting that the number eight is a lucky number in Chinese culture. (Also, 2015 is a significant year for the Asian-American

community, marking 40 years since the end of the Vietnam War and 70 years since the end of World War II.) “We’re proud to say we’re now the largest Asian-American Film Festival on the East coast,” Buscher adds, having surpassed Asian CineVision’s New Yorkbased Asian American International Film Festival, both in the number of films and programs, and PAAFF’s commitment to presenting multi-faceted portrayals of Asian Americans is evident this year.

There are films from various genres, including horror, documentary and even music video, but Buscher is especially excited about PAAFF’s opening presentation, Seoul Searching, a John Hughesstyle teen comedy in which a group of largely unsupervised Korean-American teens are sent to Korea by their parents to connect with their culture. “Anyone who has gone through adolescence will relate to this film,” he says. “It doesn’t matter what culture you come from.”

There will also be a number of LGBT additions as well, as part of the PAAFF Pride series, including the documentary Changing Season, which centers around David “Mas” Masumoto and his relationship with his queer daughter, Nikko.

Another notable entry is Family Gathering, part of the “All in the Family” shorts screenings, about recently-married elderly couple Hiro and Bud visiting Hiro’s dysfunctional but lovable family. n

or the Lalua people of central SubSaharan Africa, most names don’t have a gender. If parents want to dub their newborn son after his deceased grandmother, it’d be considered perfectly normal. Among the Lakota, who are indigenous to the North American plains, TwoSpirit individuals are relatively common: people who identify as neither strictly male nor female, in a culture with otherwise clearly defined gender roles. Intersex people have existed throughout history, and in ancient Hellenistic cultures, they were revered for their feminine beauty and masculine potency.

These are examples of the many ways that gender can be conceptualized. These are also things you can learn while visiting the nearly month-old Sex: A History in 30 Objects exhibit, which runs through the end of July 2016 at the Penn Museum.

According to curator Lauren Ristvet, the small but incredibly fascinating display takes an anthropological approach to sexuality and gender, examining “the nexus between biology and culture.”

As a part of this year’s Penn Humanities Forum on Sex, Ristvet selected 30 unique artifacts to demonstrate the diversity of views on sexuality across the globe and over a 5,000-year span. She hopes to “denaturalize ideas about sex” and showcase examples of how different cultures have experienced being a woman or a man—or someone in between.

The oldest artifact is a female figurine unearthed from a grave in Tureng Tepe (now Iran) and figures like it were probably a common feature of households at the time. The newest is a self-portrait created in 2012 that depicts the Santa Clara Pueblo artist as both a male and female in a modern rendition of American Gothic.

Between the two is a pair of tiny shoes that would have encased a Chinese woman’s broken and bound feet, representing the centuries-long practice of mutilating girls to achieve an anomalous beauty standard.

It’s easy to consider this custom barbaric and alien today, but I’m instantly reminded of an article I read last week about the serious, irreversible damage caused by long term use of high heeled shoes or of disordered eating habits required to have an Instagrammable thigh gap.

Though it’s considered fairly radical in America today to wear jewelry that depicts genitalia, many people have worn such things throughout history, like the vulva and penis pendants from the Mediterranean showcased in the exhibit. Many of the objects are actually religious in nature, Ristvet says, like the Thangka painting which portrays a series of couples en-

gaged in coitus. For the Tibetan Buddhists who would have created this piece, sex acts with courtesans were a way to approach the divine. Few Americans today recognize that the notion that sexuality separates a person from their spirituality is fairly new.

Alongside this fascinating exhibition of objects, Penn Museum is also hosting a “Gender Across Cultures” film series. I met with film archivist Kate Pourshariati in the coolest room ever—a two-story round space that looked like an eccentric millionaire’s library—to discuss the programming taking place on second Sundays each month through spring 2016.

She excitedly described the lineup, which includes documentaries that cover an all-male hula troupe in Hawaii, various notions of Indian masculinity and gendered food preparation norms in Bulgaria, among other topics. Pourshariati aims to present films that are not only educational and entertaining, but also obscure, not the sort of thing one can find on Netflix. These films provide forums to not only learn about other cultures, but also engage in conversations afterward with other viewers and, often, the filmmakers themselves.

Being cultured today, Pourshariati asserts, isn’t about knowing classical music or speaking Latin, but “being aware of the world as a whole and appreciating the differences and similarities in experience across the globe.” Both the Penn Museum’s Sex: A History in 30 Objects exhibit and its “Gender Across Cultures” program are superb opportunities to see that while sexuality and gender are universal interests, there are as many ways to experience them as there are people on the planet. n

EAR READERS: Two weeks ago, I announced I would be taking a nice long break from questions about miserable sexless marriages. (I don’t get questions about happily sexless marriages.) I tossed out my standard line of advice to those who’ve exhausted medical, psychological and situational fixes (“Do what you need to do to stay married and stay sane”), and I moved on to other relationship problems. Readers impacted by sexless marriages—men and women on “both sides of the bed”— wrote in to share their experiences and insights. I’ve decided to let them have the last word on the subject.

Since you don’t want to give any more advice to readers stuck in sexually unfulfilling marriages, will you allow me to give a little advice from the perspective of the other woman, i.e., the person who makes it possible for them to “stay married and stay sane?” I contacted an old flame when my marriage ended. He was married. His wife refused to have sex with him but also expected him to stay faithful to her. He honestly believed that staying together was the best thing for the kids. I went into it thinking it was going to be a fling, a temporary thing to get me over my husband and back in the game. But the sex was mind-blowingly good.

And here’s the thing about amazing sex: It bonds people. We fell in love all over again.

He told me our affair made his sexless marriage bearable. He was happier and a more patient father, he bickered less with his wife. He made me feel beautiful, desirable, known and accepted—all feelings that had been lacking in my marriage. But I was in the shadows. I couldn’t introduce him to my friends, my son or my family. After four years, I couldn’t take it anymore. My ego was shredded. So I ended it. I was tired of the fear, lying and hiding, and being secondary. My advice to readers stuck in sexless marriages who cheat to “stay sane:” Beware of unintended consequences. You can have an affair with the most discreet, careful partner who accepts your circumstances, who makes no demands, who provides you with both a warm body and the passion that has drained out of your marriage. You can be careful not to get caught. It might be incredible for a while. But the chances of nothing going wrong and of everyone remaining happy over the long term are vanishingly small. It’s a matter of time before someone gets hurt. —Ruby Tuesday Your advice to people whose partners have checked out of their sex lives is on target.

But would you be willing to share a voice from the other side of the bed? Until a year

ago, I was always appalled when I would read letters like these. Who would stop having sex?! Who would stay with someone who didn’t want to have sex?! Then I got sick. My illness came on slowly, but the first noticeable symptom was my sex drive vanishing. My lady parts were drier than a desert. No amount of lube helped. Sex hurt, and I didn’t want it. My journey through the medical system was a battle. They told me this is what all perimenopausal women experience and I should just deal with it. I was told to “get started” and then maybe I would enjoy it. I was given lists of supplements to try. Finally, in response to other health problems, my doctor diagnosed me with diabetes. Within weeks of taking medication and changing my diet, my engine started running again. It’s not what it was, but I don’t feel dead below the belly button anymore. During this time, my husband was supportive. I did my best to make him happy. I’d like to think that if I had continued to suffer a loss of libido for years, I would be brave enough to give him permission to find satisfaction elsewhere, but it would break my heart. My points, briefly: Legitimate things happen to people that make them lose their sex drive. Medical support for people brave enough to say “I’ve lost my mojo and need help to get it back” is not always there, and the solutions aren’t always easy or fast. Too often, people (especially women) are told that losing their sex drive is normal and they should just get used to it. No one should be forced to accept a sexless relationship. And if you’ve lost interest in sex and don’t really care to get it back, you don’t have the right to impose celibacy on another person. But in a long relationship, each partner is going to face challenges—and one of those challenges might be helping your partner fight to regain their libido. —Bed Death Survivor I’m the “other man” to a woman whose husband won’t f— her. The guy must be gay or asexual, because his wife is beautiful, smart and great in bed. I’ve never wanted marriage or kids, so this arrangement works well for me. The only time it got awkward was when my girlfriend—this other guy’s wife—broached the subject of monogamy.

Instead, the Garces reinvention of Bookbinder’s brings allspice, bitters and ginger to mingle with everything from bourbon to absinthe. Our favorite, the bartenders tell us, is a nod to old Philadelphia: The Ophelia Winthorpe, aptly named for the Jamie Lee Curtis character in Trading Places, assuming she marries Dan Aykroyd’s humbled ex-broker. The chilly temperatures that fall days usually promise haven’t yet held fast, thank goodness, but that’s absolutely no reason to refrain from diving into some sumptuous bowls of piping-hot soups on offer around town. Feel free to start at the top-rated Fork, where their celery root soup is but one of a dozen-plus menu items crafted carefully to celebrate— and make use of—nearby farms’ incredibly tasty seasonal bounty. This creamy concoction, which is poured over crispy purple and white potato bits and tender country ham, is as rich as the Olsen twins, with twice as much flavor, a silky tonic lightly salted by the sodium-rich celeriac.
