FROM THE EDITOR

Struck a nerve

S

KERITH GABRIEL

o it appears last week’s column struck a nerve with a few readers, some good, some who claim my words make them “want to throw up.â€? And while it’s never in my design to see someone’s health take a turn for the worst over something I’ve written, I do appreciate whenever I can write an editorial that pushes belief – one way or the other. Last week, in my column entitled “It Does Matter,â€? I hoped to implore people to register to vote by recalling the moment in American history that opened my own eyes to why hitting the polls is so important. In the piece, I noted that events – positive or negative – that affect our country have a funny way of shaping your role in making a change. That spurned a beautifully handwritten letter by a man named Gary Gorham, who mailed the following to our ofďŹ ces. Quickly, before I drop Gary’s letter, I just want to commend him on his amazing penmanship. I, for one, was jealous that my handwriting has never looked that sharp. I want to comment on Kerith Gabriel’s “It does matterâ€? editorial. KG wants us to buy the phony narrative that Republicans are all bad and Democrats are all good. It’s interesting that KG never mentions the DROP program. The DROP program is an example of crony capitalism supported by Democrats. KG rebukes Susan Collins for voting to conďŹ rm Kavanaugh but he never mentions that Democrat senator Joe Manchin did the same thing. People like KG make me want to throw up because he’s as phony as the politicians he defends. If I vote for the damn Dems in next month’s election, I’ll be holding my nose because there’s plenty of deceit and corruption on both sides. And here’s a few more facts. I’m a Black man. I was born and raised in Philly. I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my hand and I’m not a Black conservative. – Gary Gorham OK, so I’m going to break this down bit by bit since there are points that I agree with and some, well‌ For starters, I in no way shape or form

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

tried to dump on Republicans. In the column, I merely referenced instances under the Administration of a then-Republican president in George W. Bush that turned the tide in the way I viewed the importance of voting. I don’t even lean on a side of one or the other, but I do vote on whose beliefs closely reect what’s best for the greater good. The line where it says “It’s interesting that KG never mentions the DROP program,â€? is interesting since the controversial program was the cover story in our Jan. 11 issue. DROP by all accounts is “crony capitalism,â€? but so are most pension plans to city and union-backed employees. It’s also a program that former Republican members of City Council like John Rizzo Jr., had the opportunity to go after during his 16-year run, but instead cashed in on a six-ďŹ gure DROP payoff before peacing out of city government. I didn’t “rebukeâ€? Susan Collins, I just pointed out the irony that one of the senators happened to be a woman after hearing allegations from another esteemed woman of sexual misconduct from a man the Senate gave the keys to the highest court in the land to. And yeah, Joe Manchin is a Democrat who voted in favor of Brett Kavanaugh for Supreme Court judge, but Gorham failed to mention or realize that Manchin is a red-state Democrat from West Virginia, actively seeking re-election. Think that’s all I need to say about that. I agree with Gorham that there is corruption on both sides, I don’t think politics on any level of government is a perfect science. From City Hall to the White House there are clear instances of deceit, greed, and the lack sound judgment in decision-making as it pertains to what’s best for their constituents on both sides. But to my original point, that’s why we, as the ones electing these people, should listen to all the facts and do our best to vote for the best choice. Quickly‌ Mr. Gorham, you being a Black man is irrelevant in this context, but I truly feel that you being a Black man should urge you to speak up and hit the polls, perhaps now more than ever on Nov. 6. I too, was born and raised in Philadelphia – admittedly a large swath of that time reared in a suburb of Philadelphia – by a single mother who worked two jobs just to keep up with the silver spooners you mentioned. However, in her eyes, it was more an attempt to provide us with her ideals of a better life than what was waiting for us in North Philly circa 1990s. Also, the silver spoon comment is a bit off considering the citizens who voted for our current Republican establishment in our White House are predominantly working-class people from middle America. Thanks again for taking the time to send me such a well-written letter, Mr. Gorham. Please, keep them coming. Q TWITTER: @SPRTSWTR

Staying ahead of the pain Local teen brings awareness of the debilitating reality of chronic migraines BY ANDREA CANTOR

I

t’s not just a bad headache that will just go away by taking an Advil. It’s a migraine, and it’s a debilitating disability for many. If anyone would know, it’s Mt. Airy teen Maddie Goldsborough. “There is never an off day for me,â€? said Goldsborough, age 17. “I have had a headache for four years [24 hours a day, seven days a week].â€? Grappling with overwhelming pain, the The Germantown Friends School junior has decided to look outward and teach others about the realities of migraines, particularly among teenagers. In hopes her story will raise awareness to help destigmatize the condition for others suffering, Goldsborough recently led the Miles for Migraine Walk/Run at Wissahickon Valley Park, which had approximately 600 people participate. More than 36 million people in the United States suffer from migraines, according to the American Migraine Foundation. Women are three times more likely than men to have migraines, as stated by Medlineplus. In addition, the World Health Organization ranks migraines as one of the top 10 most disabling diseases on the planet. Goldsborough has grown up with migraines, but her symptoms were aggravated in the seventh grade after experiencing three concussions. She would go onto have another two concussions in high school. Out of the ďŹ ve total concussions, Goldsborough explained four were as a result of sports: two from soccer, one from basketball and another from ďŹ eld hockey. Due to the severity of Goldsborough’s disability, the high school junior has been banned from participating in all contact sports. “I’m upset about it, but I know it’s best for me so I won’t get injured in that way anymore,â€? explained Goldsborough, who without contact sports, still enjoys playing the

In recent years, concussions have become a major topic of conversation and controversy in sports, and a particularly polarizing topic in the National Football League. However, as Goldsborough explained, not much of the media attention has been centered on migraines. She also went on to add that, due to the nature of her own injuries, she has done a lot of research on head trauma in women’s soccer. “The coverage of head trauma is great,â€? said Goldsborough. “I love the publicity. But it's only very recent, and there's only a little bit of it.â€? But what’s missing in that limited coverage are teens like Goldsborough. “There are new drugs that just came on the market, but they are designated for over the age of 18,â€? explained Shirley Kessel, executive director of Miles4Migraine. Pediatric trials are not something pharmaceutical companies like to do [for ďŹ nancial reasons].â€? Kessel added there is a shortage of doctors specializing in migraines, despite its high diagnostic rates. As for Goldsborough, she’s looking forward to turning 18 so she can try one of the few drug options. For now, Goldsborough sticks mainly to good “headache hygiene habits.â€? She makes sure to drink at least eight glasses of water a day, sleep eight hours a night and has a proper diet. She also works with a trainer at her school gym, and the two are making a workout plan that is best for her. The migraine sufferer, turned educator, turned inspiration is now just starting the college search, which she noted has been “stressful.â€? Her plan? Goldsborough wants to explore neurology and environmental science. In the immediate, she just really wants those who are suffering from chronic migraines to know that they are not alone, and happiness is possible. “Having joy in your life while you have pain is really important,â€? Goldsborough informed. “Choosing to enjoy your life while in pain is a big deal.â€? Q TWITTER: @ANDREAJCANTOR

A reverse mortgage increases the principal mortgage loan amount and decreases home equity (it is a negative amortization loan). When the loan is due and payable, some or all of the equity in the property no longer belongs to borrowers, who may need to sell the home or otherwise repay the loan with interest from other proceeds. AAG charges an origination fee, closing costs and servicing fees (added to the balance of the loan). The balance of the loan grows over time and AAG charges interest on the balance. Not all interest on a reverse mortgage loan is tax-deductible and to the extent that it is, such deduction is not available until the loan is partially or fully repaid. Consult your tax advisor. Borrowers are responsible for paying property taxes, homeowner’s insurance, maintenance, and related taxes (which may be substantial). We do not establish an escrow account for disbursements of these payments. A set-aside account can be set up to pay taxes and insurance and may be required in some cases. Borrowers must occupy home as their primary residence and pay for ongoing maintenance; otherwise the loan becomes due and payable. The loan also becomes due and payable (and the property may be subject to a tax lien, other encumbrance, or foreclosure) when the last borrower dies, sells the home, permanently moves out, defaults on taxes, insurance payments, or maintenance, or does not otherwise comply with the loan terms. Amal Clooney’s riveting speech still has people talking about it on social media a nearly a week later after blasting statements made by President Trump.

‘Refuse to be silent’ Powerful words, powerful women highlight Pennsylvania Conference for Women BY ANDREA CANTOR

P

owerful words were spoken by even more powerful female leaders during the Pennsylvania Conference for Women inside the Convention Center on Oct. 12 The day included a number of speakers, including Philadelphia mayor Jim Kenney and Pennsylvania governor Tom Wolf, who both took the main stage to welcome the conference and note the importance of women’s issues in today’s society. But the excitement was conversation and lectures from Lebanese-British barrister Amal Clooney and tennis superstar Serena Williams. Other keynote speakers included 16-year-old iOS developer Amanda Southworth and actress, comedian, and disability advocate Maysoon Zayid.

2&72%(5

Across the board and to varying degrees, the keynote speakers touched on the topic of women’s health and disability.

Amal Clooney Clooney discussed the self-mutilations, including burning of the face, by women and girls trying to avoid abduction, rape and sex trafďŹ cking. For the majority of her speech, she talked about her client and recent Nobel Peace Prize recipient Nadia Murad. Murad was kidnapped by the Islamic State (ISIS) for three months. “Nadia Murad is the girl who refused to be silent,â€? Clooney said to the packed audience. “In doing that, she’s an example to us all.â€? Clooney then shifted the conversation to the U.S., taking aim at President Donald Trump’s treatment of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s sexual assault allegations against now Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Williams spoke in conversation with Fortune Magazine’s Ellen McGirt and focused on the topic on maternal health, a cause she has been championing since the birth of daughter, Alexis Olympia. During childbirth, Williams suffered a pulmonary embolism, which is when a blood clot blocks the ow of blood to the lungs. “I did some research and I was alarmed that our Black mothers are not being taken care of. It’s in this country that is supposed to be so technologically advanced. Why are we treating our mothers like this?,â€? Williams asked. Black women are three-to-four times more likely than white women to die from a pregnancy-related death, according to the CDC. Interestingly, Williams made no mention of the French Open’s ban of her “catsuit,â€? which she wore to prevent the formation of blood clots which she is now susceptible of getting since giving birth. She also did not talk about particulars of this year’s U.S. Open ďŹ nals, speciďŹ cally the controversial calls by chair umpire Carlos Ramos. She came close to breaching the topic when she discussed the accomplishment of her career postpregnancy: “To get to the ďŹ nals of Wimbledon was really for me impossible. Less than a year before, I was in a hospital bed with a child. And then to do it again in the U.S. ďŹ nal.â€? When McGirt asked if there was anything also Williams wanted to discuss, possibly to address the elephant in the room, Williams did not budge. However, Williams did explain there is no “rule bookâ€? on being a changemaker for both race and gender. “You gotta push boundaries that are difďŹ cult to push. If you think of it as a brick wall. It’s gonna be hard to push. But you gotta keep pushing

at it. One day it’s gonna budge, and when you get that ďŹ rst budge, it’s really exciting because you know that it is meant to be pushed,â€? said Williams. “We are here at this conference for a reason. There are so many great women together. [And] this is pushing an incredible boundary because I’ve traveled the world, and I’ve never seen anything like this.â€?

Amanda Southworth The timing of the Pennsylvania Conference for Women coincided with Mental Health Awareness Week, which ran from Oct. 7-13. Southworth, just 16, has struggled with mental health for a number of years. With an eating disorder by the time she was in fourth grade, multiple suicide attempts, a pill addiction, coupled with depression and anxiety, Southworth at last found refuge courtesy of a seventh grade robotics class. According to Southworth, she and her father eventually left her abusive and homophobic mother and she acquired the therapy treatment she needed. What didn’t change was her love for technology. Gay identifying, Southworth is the founder of the software nonproďŹ t Astra Labs and creator of the cognitive based therapy app AnixetyHelper and the LGBT+ safety app Verena. “[I am about] making mental health resources more affordable and more accessible to people because when you look at it, the more marginalized people are, the more likely they are to have a mental health condition and the less likely they are to get treatment,â€? Southworth said in a press interview. “If we want people to get better then we need to tell them about what they are facing and make health accessible to them.â€? Other than travel expenses, Southworth said she does not get paid for her products — not the typical response for someone who could be making my money in the health-tech industry. “I try to be very moral and set in my principals,â€? Southworth told PW. “Looking at the start up culture I would say, it’s a bunch of people who never intended to have this much power and now they have it, and now they are abusing it. On one hand, I feel sorry for them, but on the other, I think a lot of them need to grow up and accept they are no longer a startup, and that they

Composed and well-spoken, Southworth said she came as a representation for teens, those with mental health issues and women, a gender that is largely underrepresented in technology. “If we want more women in STEM, we need to make them feel welcome there, explained Southworth, who said she has been stalked by male fans. “They are already waiting to be there but we just need to open it up for them.

Maysoon Zayid An area also lacking representation is the disability community in the entertainment industry. Zayid has struggled as an actress with cerebral palsy to get parts, even ones depicting CP that she was “literally born to play.â€? “I don't blame people, like the rocker Dustin Hoffman [in Rain Man], who didn't know. I want the new generation of actors to know better, do better and uplift us‌â€? Zayid told PW. “You could have a disabled person be the co-star and still have the movie you want without offensive, cartoonish and inauthentic portrayals that shut us out. When a kid sees disability on the screen and that disability disappears on the red carpet, they think they can't be it.â€? Zayid is developing an autobiographical comedy series, called Can-Can, for ABC. In the show, the Muslim protagonist with CP will be played by none other than Zayid.

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

“So when I get on ABC, I'm basically going to make it shameful for non disabled people to play those roles anymore, and they are going to start turning them down,â€? explained Zayid, who had one of the most popular TED Talks in 2014. But Zayid noted that it’s ultimately up to the ones in power, in this case celebrities, to make the change. “[It's] the celebrities that have to start turning down the roles,â€? Zayid argued. “We can keep calling it out and saying it's offensive and saying it's inauthentic. But until celebrities stand up and say, 'We're not going to participate in the silencing of these voices anymore.' It's not going to stop.â€? When it comes to people in political power, and the current administration, the comedian in Zayid says she tries to make the situation funny: her speciality. But as a Palestinian, Muslim, disabled woman, Zayid said she ďŹ nds it draining but invigorating. “So I ďŹ nd it more exhausting than comedic but the whole center of what I do is CanCan. It's the idea that you don't lie down. It's always darkest before dawn. You get up, you vote, you ip it, and we come back. There are so many things that went against us in history and we always came back stronger,â€? explained Zayid. “I'm exhausted. I'd love a day off. But I'm ready more than ever to ďŹ ght for the country I love and make it what I want it to be, because I'm not going to leave.â€? Q TWITTER: @ANDREAJCANTOR

Buffa is the co-founder of Analog Watch Co., a fashion house along a stretch of East Passyunk Avenue that makes all of its creations entirely from environmentally sustainable or recycled materials. Buffa, who began the company in 2013 backed by a $75,000 Kickstarter campaign, has turned his tiny South Philly showroom into a leader in sustainable fashion, selling watches worldwide and donating proceeds from every sale to replenish whatever materials were used. Over those last ďŹ ve years, the company has created fashionable eyewear, purses and wallets all made from sustainable materials, but it’s Analog’s latest endeavor that returned the company to its watch-making roots, a series of timepieces made from cork and dyed in red, white and blueberry wines, appropriately called the Somm Collection.

Courtney Douds’ passion for hunting with birds of prey is a constant lesson in patience, care and in some cases, heartbreak and disappointment.

Catch and release Writer Jared Brey takes us all on an adventure in urban falconry JARED BREY

T

he October sun had burned away the fog, and Courtney Douds was trudging through the scrub on State Game Lands 43, in Chester County, beating the bushes with a broomhandle. She’d brought an extra stick for me, so I followed along, whacking away at dewy patches of goldenrod and listening for anything that might be trying to scamper. In this scenario, we were the dogs. The

hunter, a juvenile red-tailed hawk named Addy, was perched on a branch at the edge of the clearing, just 10 feet above our heads. She had bells tethered to her ankles but was otherwise unrestrained. Her mythological namesake, Atalanta, was a boar huntress who didn’t want to get married, but Addy was looking out for squirrels and rabbits. Douds was animated by a less tangible drive. We kicked through the grass up a small hill with no sign of game. Before turning onto another path, Douds looked back toward Addy, whistled, and ashed a bit of mouse meat in her glove. The hawk leapt off the branch, bells jangling, and soared across the clearing. She perched on Douds’ glove and ate the food. Soon she took off again and picked another perch halfway down the lane. “Now we’ll follow her lead,â€? Douds said. We had passed a rie range on the gravel road coming into the gamelands and could

hear gunshots at regular intervals in the distance. Douds was dressed in an orange Tshirt and an oversized hunting vest. She had arrived before me, and sent a text message suggesting I try to ďŹ nd some uorescent tees: “Would strongly prefer not to get shot,â€? her text read. But all I could ďŹ nd was a green Eagles T-shirt, so we went without. Neither of us had remembered to bring bug repellent and the gnats were ruthless as they landed in our eyes and mouths. Addy took off into the trees. “Yeah,â€? Douds said, approvingly, “let’s actually go into the woods a little bit.â€? Douds, who just turned 30, lives in West Philly and makes a living as a psychoanalyst and a piano teacher. She had been training Addy for about a month since trapping her in the wild, and it was only the second or third time she had let her y without being tied to the long training leash that falconers call a creance. She has lost birds before – a kestrel she trapped last year ew away one day – and to guard as much as possible against losing Addy, she kept a loud whistle in her pocket and a dead rat tied to a lure. If you’re thinking about becoming a falconer, you will need to make room in your pockets for the dead rats. And in your freezer. You’ll need a cage and a glove and various other speciality items. But most of what you need can be found in the wild, such as it is. In September, I watched Douds y Addy on a creance at a park in West Philly, coaxing her into ight with bits of meat, then swinging the rat carcass around on the lure, and ďŹ nally telling the bird it was time to eat by blowing the whistle and dropping the lure on the ground. In the woods Addy became bolder, ying deeper into the trees as we tried to keep up. The jingling got softer and the rie shots got louder. We stopped in a small clearing and listened. Douds looked concerned but calm. She pulled the lure out of her pocket and put the whistle in her mouth. “This will end things,â€? she said: A feast for Addy would turn her off from hunting. She stood still for another minute, straining to hear the bells, and then put the rat back in her pocket. “I’m going to go just a little further in.â€? — Red-tailed hawks are common in the U.S., and they nest in tall trees and perch on leafless branches, telephone poles, and pylons. It’s not hard to ďŹ nd them in urban parks and on college campuses, sometimes eviscerating a squirrel or a pigeon. You can tell them apart from similar species by their size and, once mature, their distinctive red tails. The ďŹ rst time I was ever sure I positively ID’d one was at John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge. It was circling high overhead in silhouette. Some seasoned birdwatchers nearby were taking educated guesses at its species when the bird turned its body perpendicular to the sunlight,

and its tail feathers lit up as bright and red as a shiny new penny. The hawk’s voice, as described in The Sibley Guide to Birds, is “a distant-sounding, rasping, scraping scream, falling in pitch and intensity cheeeeeeewv.â€? If you live in America you’ve probably heard this sound – not in the wild, but because the fearsome scream is often purposefully misapplied as a symbol of the bald eagle. The bald eagle itself is as likely to scavenge as it is to hunt, and its call, per Sibley, consists of “rather weak, at, chirping whistles.â€? The ďŹ rst time I met Douds, in March, we talked for half an hour at a coffee shop, then paid a visit to her previous red-tail, named Heff, who was living in a ten-by-ten-by-sixfoot mews in the backyard of a big house in West Philly whose tenants sublet the space to Douds for a at monthly fee. Then we walked a few blocks to her old apartment. She had two rats thawing in the refrigerator, next to a bag of kale. She was going to feed Heff after I left, so she took out one of the rodents and, using a pair of scissors, snipped off its tail and hindquarters and icked its guts into the sink. Heff would eat the rest—digesting even the bones, which not all raptor species can do – and later vomit up a pellet of fur. If a hawk eats another bird, its pellets will contain feathers too. “The red-tail is the only bird that I've successfully had and hunted with,â€? Douds told me. “I had a kestrel for a small amount of time, but being in the city, [the red-tail] is the best bird for where I am. They're native to the area. If you lose them, it's not like it's an issue with the wild population or anything. And they hunt bunnies and squirrels. ... Falcons, you need a lot of space to hunt with them. They're hunting duck and pheasant and quail. It's totally different depending on what bird you have.â€? Douds grew up in Buffalo. She learned about falconry in ďŹ fth-grade social studies, but she wasn’t hooked until the eighth grade, when — “Ugh, it's so lame. It’s pretty badâ€?— she saw The Royal Tenenbaums in the movie theater. Then, she began devouring the entirety of falcon literature. She volunteered at a raptor rehab center in Buffalo. She went to Columbia University, where she studied English and environmental biology, then apprenticed as a falconer in South Carolina and spent two years as a trainer at a falconry school in Ireland. Later, she got a dual master’s degree in education and social work, with a specialty in human sexuality, at Widener, which is how she landed in Philadelphia. Somewhere along the way, she worked a brief spell at a garbage dump, ying hawks to keep the seagull population in check. In Center City, Douds practices therapy with individuals and couples, focusing on issues of sexuality, monogamy and nonmonogamy, kink, and sex work. Her psychoanalytic method is based on the work of Jacques Lacan, a French philosopher and follower of

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

*+) Sigmund Freud whose ideas would require, for illumination, more space and some long afternoons in the library. “The interventions that you use are repeating words that your patient has used, repeating words and phrases, asking folks to ďŹ nish their sentences,â€? Douds said. “It also goes by Freudian rules of free association – say whatever comes to mind, regardless of whether you think it's offensive or trivial or irrelevant. And this idea that ‘The unconscious is structured like a language’ – all these words and signiďŹ ers are connected in ways that you don't really understand consciously, and so by speaking freely and forging some of those new connections, or realizing some of them, you sort of change your symptoms, or change your suffering.â€? Clinically, Lacanian analysis has fallen out of vogue in the U.S., Douds admits. Then again, so have her primary hobbies: Blues dancing, crossstitch, and hunting small game with a bird of prey. Last summer, Douds had been keeping Heff (namesake: Hephaestus) in an aviary near 52nd and Arch. One night, she went to feed him and didn’t hear his bells jingling. Heff was unconscious on the ground, with a brick and a twoby-four laying nearby. He’d been attacked by a human, Douds concluded. He had brain damage and his depth perception was permanently askew. Douds couldn’t take him hunting after that. She planned to get a different permit and begin using Heff for educational programs. But another tragedy intervened. I originally intended to write this story in April, and I made plans to accompany Douds and Heff on a visit to the vet and to a wild bird expo in Havertown. But a couple days before the vet appointment, I got an email from Douds saying that she had found Heff “dead and half eaten in his mews.â€? It was confounding. The mews was, from what she could tell, undisturbed – falconers are required to have their aviaries inspected by a game warden when they’re ďŹ rst built and every time they renew their licenses – and the gate was closed. But Heff’s entire head, including the skull, had been eaten. “I'm feeling devastated and terrible and not particularly pleased with myself as a falconer,â€? she wrote. Douds and the veterinarian surmised that Heff had gotten one of his talons caught in the leather strap that holds the bells to the ankles, and a raccoon had somehow shimmied into the mews and taken advantage of the “caught and half blindâ€? bird. She later told me she’d been nervous to tell her falconry sponsor about what had occurred, but that when she had, he was supportive and nonjudgmental. She buried Heff and planted owers on his grave. She said she intended to reinforce the mews and, if she was feeling up to it, go looking for another hawk in August. — The trap was homemade: Two panels of hardware cloth reinforced with rebar, with a bowl punched into the top and a hinged door on the bottom. Tied to the top were dozens of tiny

nooses made of ďŹ shing wire. On a hot Sunday in August, I had the whole contraption sitting on a towel in my lap in the passenger seat of Douds’ car, with two mice scurrying in the cage as we drove around Amish country. Douds had a recycled playlist for the occasion, with selections including “Beez in the Trapâ€? and “Trap Queen.â€? We bounced around the towns of Blue Ball and Gap and Sadsbury and Atglen. There were vultures and tree swallows galore, and a few goldďŹ nches. Occasionally there was a red-tail. Usually Douds traps by herself. The mice get the cage and the front seat to themselves, and when she sees a hawk, trafďŹ c permitting, she slows down and tosses the cage out the window in full view of the bird, then stops

the car a short distance away to watch. With luck, the hawk will take interest in the mice, swoop down on the cage, and get a toe stuck in one of the nooses. Then all she has to do is run over to the trap, put a leather hood on the bird, spray it down with a delousing solution, and put the bird in a traveling cage. I didn’t get to see that part. That Sunday, we had a close call with a juvenile red-tail perched on a wire outside a feed mill in Atglen, a small borough in Chester County. It eyed the trap as soon as it hit the pavement. Douds and I got out of the car and hid behind a silo, monitoring the activity with binoculars. The hawk ew low past the mice three times and then took off. We laid the trap again in the parking lot of a high school in

nearby Gordonville, but the hawk perched on top of a telephone pole there showed no interest. Which was for the best: Douds eventually determined it was an adult, and adults, which establish breeding pairs, are off-limits. On the drive home it began to storm, and I asked her how it felt to strike out. “Frustrated that I'm going to have to spend at least another three hours in the car trapping again,â€? she said. “And especially now with the trees leafed out, it's just so hard to ďŹ nd them. Just frustrated that it's more time. Once you get the bird, that's the fun stuff.â€? But don’t you ever feel conicted, I once asked her, about taking a bird from the wild and keeping it in captivity? “Not really,â€? she said. “Both big and small picture it seems pretty inoffensive. They're incredibly common species. So many of them die in their ďŹ rst year. And also they're releasable. So it's almost zero impact on the ecology and everything.â€? OK, I said, but what about at the level of the specimen? Certainly the bird doesn’t want to be trapped.

2&72%(5

“Maybe sometimes,â€? she said. “They deďŹ nitely don't at the start, which is why you have to trap them. But once you have them trained, it's more up to you whether

built that kind of relationship for it to stick around. Other birds, they can y off at any point if you're not useful to them, and they'll be as ďŹ ne as they would have been in the wild anyway.â€?

“Once you have them trained, it's more up to you whether they're going to stay or not... they can fly off at any point if you're not useful to them, and they'll be as fine as they would have been in the wild anyway.

— After the ďŹ rst trapping trip, I began to spot red-tails everywhere. They’re often on top of tall pillars by the side of the road, or perched in leaess branches of tall trees. Douds said she had spotted a red-tail on a tower at a demolition site on Washington Avenue in South Philly, but when she drove past on her way to pick me up the following Friday, she couldn’t ďŹ nd it again. So we trolled past the docks on Columbus Boulevard and drove around the Navy Yard for an hour looking for a bird in the open places. But the closest call we had was at a shopping center. A red-tail was sitting on top of the plaza sign, hunting, and when Douds dropped the trap on a median in the parking lot, the bird ew down and started picking at it almost immediately. There were people everywhere. A tour bus pulled in and peo-

– COURTNEY DOUDS, URBAN FALCONER

they're going to stay or not. The one I had that ew away was not heartbreaking, because I didn't train it well enough. Why would it stick around with me? We hadn't

ple began to disembark. A woman in a white truck stopped to take a picture of the hawk, and as Douds ran over to explain what was happening, the bird took off, ipping the trap over with its almost-caught talon in the process. It set up in a nearby tree. Douds was determined, and dropped the trap a little further away from the main ow of trafďŹ c. But in the meantime, the hawk had managed to catch a pigeon, and it sat on top of a light pylon tearing it to shreds. Feathers were falling down from the perch like snowakes, and nobody else on the ground seemed to have any idea what was taking place above them. We gave up as it was getting dark. I wasn’t there when Douds caught Addy, in the parking lot of a grocery store, on her way home from a baby shower. How many city-dwelling psychoanalysts are prepared to do such a thing? The ďŹ rst time we talked, Douds told me she’d often been torn about whether to pursue a clinical career or one working with hawks. Over the summer, riding in the passenger seat, I asked her to venture a self-analysis. Was there some unifying impulse that motivated both interests? She kept her hands on the wheel. “I don't know that there's a connection between the two,â€? she said. “Hunting involves life and death, and there's deďŹ nitely a drive, and it deďŹ nitely seems bound up in my sexuality in ways that speak to the way psychoanalysis thinks about those things, or frames them – ideas of pursuit and desire and wanting things and how that maps onto how I relate to other people. I deďŹ nitely see a connection between falconry and nonmonogamy. Like if this is no longer working, this person has the freedom to peace out. But one of the myriad things I love about birds of prey is that it's hard to project too much onto them. I bite my tongue when I talk about their personalities. I'm never like, Oh, this bird loves me so much.â€? She was 20 paces of ahead of me in the woods when she called out, “Dude, get back here, she got a squirrel!â€? I hurried to catch up and found her standing over Addy. The bird’s hackles were raised and her wings were spread out, defensively cupping the catch. In West Philly, I’d seen Douds reach in and touch Addy’s feet when she was eating off of the lure, to get her used to the idea of having her meals interrupted. During hunts, Douds wants the bird to catch the prey, but not to eat the whole thing, so she can manage its weight. To keep the bird from getting hurt she will sometimes intervene to kill the prey, even crushing a squirrel’s lungs in her own gloved hand, but Addy had done the job on her own. The squirrel was dead. It was her ďŹ rst wild hunt. Douds threw down the lure to distract Addy, then slipped the dead squirrel into her vest pocket, letting the bird feast instead on the rat. During the scufe, which neither of us witnessed, Addy had gotten a cut on her toe. After we left the gamelands, Douds took her to the vet for an iodine treatment and – since it was a growing concern in the local hawk population – a vaccine for West Nile Virus. She would y her on the creance until she was sure she was healed. Later this fall, before she takes a two-week trip to Mongolia to hunt with golden eagles, she’ll untie the bells and release her back into the wild. Q TWITTER: @JAREDBREY

Philadelphia Weekly caught up with Walsh in advance of the show about his craft, his preparation, excitement to be coming home and the apparent dangers of stand up comedy.

How did you get into comedy? I was court-ordered to do it. I got too many DUIs, so‌

When was your first gig, and how did that go? I started doing comedy in Texas. I did that a while ago. The ďŹ rst gig went pretty great, the second went even better, and it's just gotten exponentially better since then. So if you come to my show, it will either knock your dick in the dirt or blow your tits off.

Very descript. Well, in the other direction, what was your worst stand up experience? I got stabbed one time on stage.

I thought you were just going to say no one laughed. When did this happen? 2004.

What was the reason behind the stabbing? I was doing a lot of [former President George W.] Bush material and the guy

Did it take awhile to recuperate? No, not too long. He didn’t hit any organs.

Did that incident scare you from doing any more political material? Not really. I was a little scared to go on stage, but then I overcame that fear and I came back stronger than ever.

Who are your favorite comics or was there a comic that you wanted to be like? Well, I aspire to be the next Bill Cosby. He was also from Philadelphia. You can’t get any bigger than that.

Oh, yeah, umm it sure doesn’t. Always considered myself a Cosby man.

What advice would you give to local comics trying to make it big? Just ďŹ nd out what is funny to you, and do that. Don’t try to be someone else. Unless you are trying to do a whole character thing, because that could work.

Mural Arts Month

T

echnically this isn’t week-speciďŹ c, but Mural Arts Month is a celebration of all things outside art, so we’re giving it a home of this week’s must check out event for the remainder of October. If you’ve spent any time tooling around the city then you’ve surely seen your fair share of building-as-canvas beauty. But Mural Arts Month isn’t really about the art. Or only about the art because, well, let’s be realistic; of course it’s about the art. And the artists. And work that only a select few human beings on earth could do with any semblance of competence. No, what Mural Arts Month really signiďŹ es and celebrates is community. Neighbors, friends, strangers coming together to make a place not just a place, but a home. To that end, all through October and all across the city, Mural Arts Philadelphia will be celebrating the helpers, the hope-rs, the artists and activists, the talented and the too-tough-to-give up, no matter how daunting the project may seem. I

DAN SAVAGE

have a secret: For the past three months, I’ve been attending a local Jacks club (a men-only masturbation event). As someone recovering from sexual abuse, I ďŹ nd the party to be safe, therapeutic, and just sexy fun. I feel like I need this! Unfortunately, I spotted one of my employees at last week’s event. Although I’m openly gay at my workplace, being naked, erect, and sexual in the same room as my employee felt wrong. I freaked out, packed up, and departed without him seeing me (I hope). I’m his manager at work, and I feel that being sexual around him could damage our professional relationship. It could even have dangerous HR consequences. I realize he has every right to attend Jacks, as much right as me, but I wish he weren’t there. I want to continue attending Jacks, but what if he’s there again? Frankly, I’m terriďŹ ed to discuss the topic with him. Help! – Just A Cock Kraving Safety “I hate to say it, but now that JACKS knows his employee attends these events, he really has to stop going,â€? said Alison Green, the management consultant behind the popular Ask a Manager advice column (askamanager.org) and the author of Ask a Manager: How to Navigate Clueless Colleagues, Lunch-Stealing Bosses, and the Rest of Your Life at Work. And why do you have to stop going to your beloved JO club? “In an employment relationship where he’s in a position of power,â€? said Green, “JACKS has a responsibility to avoid any remotely sexual situation with an employee.â€? Green also strongly advises against pulling your employee aside and working out some sort of shared custody agreement – you get Jacks to yourself every other week – because initiating a conversation with a subordinate about when and where he likes to jack off would be a bad idea. She also doesn’t think you can just keep going in the hopes that your employee won’t be back. “If he continues to attend and it got back to anyone at their workplace, it would be re-

ally damaging to his reputation – not the fact that he was at the event to begin with, but the fact that he continued to attend knowing an employee was also participating,â€? said Green. “It would call his professional judgment into question, and it’s highly likely that HR would freak out about the potential legal liability that arises when you have a manager and a subordinate in a sexual context together.â€? OK, wait a minute. If it gets around the ofďŹ ce that JACKS attended a JO party, that would mean the employee was gossiping about it at work. Why would a manager get in trouble for that and not the gossipy asshole he was supervising? Why would JACKS’s “professional judgmentâ€? be called into question and not the judgment of the employee who spread the news around the ofďŹ ce? “Gossiping about it deďŹ nitely wouldn’t make the employee look great,â€? said Green. “The employee would look like a jerk for gossiping about something that the boss has the right to expect privacy around. But the boss is held to a higher standard: It’s part of his job to understand the boundaries he needs to have with the people he manages, to navigate the power differential appropriately, and to not create potential liability (legal or otherwise) for the company. So for the employee, it’s going to reect badly on him personally (he’s a gossip) – but for the boss, it’s going to reect badly on him as a manager.â€? It seems crazy unfair to me that you should have to stop going to parties you not only enjoy, JACKS, but that have aided in your recovery. And Green agrees – it isn’t fair – but with great power (management) comes great responsibility (avoiding places where your employees are known to jack off). “It’s never going to feel fair to have to drop out of a private, out-of-work activity just because of your job,â€? said Green. “I’m hoping it’s possible for JACKS to ďŹ nd a different club in a neighboring town. Or he could start his own club and offer a safe haven for other managers hiding out from potential run-ins with employees – Jacks for Middle Managers or something!â€? While I had Green’s attention, I asked her about other sorts of gay social events that might toss a manager and an employee into a sexual context – think of the thousands of men who attended the Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco last month. What They Are Saying: Dear Kathy & Patrick, Joe and I can’t thank you enough for all you did to get us through the “craziness’ that took place with the purchase of our house. Both of you made this a smooth process with the sale of our house and stepped in when things went bad with the delay in our new purchase. Kathy, you gave us a place to stay that saved us thousands of dollars. I’m glad settlement is ďŹ nally here, and we can move forward to enjoy the house of our dreams. You have both been our angels here on earth. What a true blessing! Thank you, thank you, thank you! With Love, Ann & Joe Pural
