I
n a few short weeks, the polls will be open as the midterm elections could swing the tide of how agendas are handled on a state and federal level. One of those key topics is the state of health care – speciďŹ cally affordable care courtesy of ObamaCare. Last week, Tarik Sharif Khan, a family nurse practitioner in Philadelphia, an associate fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute, and a doctoral student at the University of Pennsylvania reached out to me and asked if I’d run a letter that really serves as a plea to all of us. After reading, it was a no-brainer. ObamaCare saved my patients, ip this Congress and save America Your vote in November will be a clear choice between right and wrong. Some believe that the clearest examples of Congressional Republicans shameful behavior are their indifference to Trump’s embraces of white supremacists and Vladimir Putin, racist policies to keep out black and brown immigrants, or tax cuts to beneďŹ t the rich and big corporations at the expense of the poor. I, however, believe that no single issue better illustrates the gap in morals between Republicans and Democrats in Congress than health care. For underserved health centers like mine, where I work as a family nurse practitioner, the Affordable Care Act (AKA ObamaCare or the ACA) was a decent and compassionate gift from the government. The ACA expanded Medicaid in many states like Pennsylvania and created a fair marketplace where working Americans could buy affordable health insurance. The law was a major factor in helping our health center to remarkably cut our uninsured rate down from over 25 percent to under 10 percent. In addition to ďŹ nally getting our patients access to quality health care, our centers could now get more fully reimbursed for our care. This let us add more health-care providers and services like substance abuse treatment and pain management. These patients include Mr. Williams, a local small-business owner, who with his gentle giant presence and quiet manner reminds me of Mission: Impossible actor Ving Rhames. Before ObamaCare, Mr. Williams had several

serious untreated health conditions. He was unable to ďŹ nd an affordable plan that would insure him because of his pre-existing conditions. He also didn’t qualify for Medicaid because he made too much money. When the ACA’s health marketplace opened, Mr. Williams was ďŹ nally able to get insurance. Like all ObamaCare plans, his plan outlawed discrimination from pre-existing conditions. Also, like the vast majority of ACA enrollees, Mr. Williams received large ďŹ nancial assistance to pay his health costs. His plan included essential health beneďŹ ts like primary care visits. He also gained coverage for ER, hospital, and specialist visits in case his kidney disease, a complication of years of untreated high blood pressure, sent him into crisis. His plan also included eye care, so he could get cataract surgery and treatment for the eye diseases caused by his diabetes and high blood pressure. President Trump and his Republican friends in Congress, however, have cruelly tried to make it hard for patients like Mr. Williams keep their ACA protections, or even sign up for care in the ďŹ rst place. From the start of Trump’s administration, they slashed ObamaCare sign-up periods in half, all but took away funding for enrollment, shut down the website during peak hours, and cut refunds to insurance companies to help struggling Americans afford insurance. When I asked Mr. Williams year last about Republican plans to repeal and the replace the ACA, he seemed fearful, saying “I’m worried‌ I try not to think about it.â€? He then shrugged and said, “I don’t know what I’m going to do.â€? An ACA repeal would be devastating for my patients. Patients like Mr. Williams will lose ďŹ nancial assistance to help pay his health costs and would be charged more for his preexisting conditions. He could face bankruptcy after hitting annual or lifetime caps on insurance payouts, which the ACA had abolished. And Mr. Williams, like many of those at our clinic who got insurance under the ACA, would likely once again be uninsured. On Nov. 6, you will have the chance to send a message to Republicans in Congress about their unjust efforts to separate my patients like Mr. Williams from their quality and affordable health insurance. Whether or not Congressional Republicans want to run on sabotage, as we say in Philly, that’s their jawn. My nursing advice: ip this Congress and save America. – Tarik S. ike share riders, there is an Indego bike share station that has been permanently laid to rest. In August, the 1911 Walnut Street Indego station, with 23 docking points, was removed due to construction and utility work at the site. What was the initial alternative? To move the bike share station across the street to the perimeter of Rittenhouse Square Park, even if just temporarily until a permanent solution could be found.

Easy ďŹ x, right? Wrong. Out of protest from The Friends of Rittenhouse Square, it was decided in late August the bike share station will not be moved across the street. One of the major reasons for not sharing the public park with the eco-friendly public transportation system, owned by the City of Philadelphia? The farmers market. “We just want to make sure that the farmers market would not be impacted and that any pedestrian use of the park would not be impacted,â€? RenĂŠe Dubyk, president of the Friends of Rittenhouse Square told Philadelphia Weekly. But as Friends of Rittenhouse Square partners with the city and Indego to ďŹ nd another spot, some are left puzzled. “I don't understand what the danger is. It's people riding super clunky bikes that you can't get that fast on,â€? said Travis Southard, manager of the socially conscious North Philly bike shop Cycles PHL. “The people who tend to be riding them are not your weekend warriors, who are trying to set a record, they're just they're just trying to go to a restaurant or to the library or to Barnes and Noble or to the park, or to the farmers market. People want to ride their bikes to the farmers market.â€? Southard called out the apparent hypocrisy that bicycles would be considered the danger, when automobiles are the biggest threat in the narrow streets of Rittenhouse Square to pedes-
trians, bicyclists and the park. In 2017, cops apprehended and arrested a naked man for joyriding through Rittenhouse Square Park in a stolen taxi cab. Also last year was the notorious wall ban, prohibiting people from sitting on the park’s stone balustrades. The order, directed under the authority of the Department of Parks and Recreation, was to curtail heightening rates of vandalism and pot smoking. But many soon argued the ban infringed upon the equitable use of the public park and had discriminatory ramiďŹ cations. While Dubyk said she “can see howâ€? one could could connect this incident to the wall ban, this is ultimately about public safety. “It is this feeling only certain people are allowed to be there. And a lot of the time it seems like the only people who are allowed there are the people who live immediately nearby and that's not how public parks work. It's certainly not how public parks in urban centers work,â€? Southard challenged. According to Indego’s 201718 annual report, the Rittenhouse Square station was one of the top ďŹ ve stations for Indego30 Access holders, which provides a subsidized rate for lower-income individuals. A surprise to some, given the afuence of the neighborhood, City of Philadelphia OfďŹ ce of Transportation & Infrastructure Systems manager Aaron Ritz told PW that bike shares are not just about the “starting place.â€? Ritz and Christopher Puchalsky, director of Policy, OfďŹ ce of Transportation & Infrastructure Systems, explained bike users may be commuting to work in or passing through Rittenhouse Square, which has high commerce in retail and restaurants. “Rittenhouse is one of the really excellent public spaces in the City of Philadelphia. It is something that is a tourist attraction, it is somewhere where people want to go for their lunch when they are coming from work, and it is something that we want accessible to Philadelphians broadly,â€? explained Ritz. “So it is not really what the area is like, but where people can get to as a result of the bike share.â€? Almost 6 percent of all trips come from the Rittenhouse Square station, according to Ritz. Indego has hosted 2.2 million-plus trips to date. In a Friends of Rittenhouse
Square email, Dubyk mentioned a 2014 survey as another source for the pushback against the relocation of the bike share to the park, because of its impact to “revenueâ€? and “aesthetics.â€? “In 2014, a survey was conducted by the Mayor's OfďŹ ce of Transportation and Utilities which resulted in a majority opposition to placing the bike stations on the perimeter or adjacent to the square given the revenue impact & the impact it will have on the Square's aesthetics and the fact the Square is a pedestrian park where bikes are prohibited.â€? Later in the email, she wrote: “I wanted to bring this matter to your attention so you are aware of the proposed change. I encourage you to provide written support or opposition to this change. It is important that our community’s opinions are represented -- speciďŹ cally, when taxpayer dollars are used towards the Indego stations.â€? Giving context to the 2014 email, Ritz explained the survey was part of the pre-planning phase for Indego. The team conducted online and in-person outreach, even placing stickers in possible bike share locations, to get feedback. “If you look at the positive responses of those proposed locations around the perimeter of Rittenhouse Square, those locations received the most positive responses, but we also received a great number of responses from people who didn't like that idea,â€? explained Ritz. Replacing the station will be a challenge, from both an accessible and ďŹ nancial standpoint. “We're deďŹ nitely looking for something that serves Rittenhouse Square as much as possible. Probably not a shock to anybody that that has historically been, and even to this date, our strongest performing station,â€? said Ritz. “We're going to try to ďŹ nd more than one alternate site to foot the bill there.â€? On Sept. 13, Indego built a station at 1700 Locust Street to mitigate some of the blowback from absence at Rittenhouse Square. But 1700 Locust Street, alone, will not be enough to recover the ridership the 1911 Walnut Street had gained. “We are trying to thread that line of being respectful of community, but really do believe, and we have plenty of evidence to show, that Indego has been a safe program,â€? said Ritz. illions of Americans sat riveted as they tuned into the live “he said, she saidâ€? testimonies that transpired during the week that was the conďŹ rmation hearing of Supreme Court Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Over the span of nine hours, his accuser, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, and Kavanaugh relayed the memories of the summer of 1982, the time of an alleged sexual attack that the judge emphatically denies. “Brett put his hand over my mouth to stop me from yelling," Dr. Ford said of the alleged rape attempt by Kavanaugh and high school classmate Mark Judge to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Sept. 27. “This is what terriďŹ ed me the most and had the most lasting impact on my life. It was hard for me to breathe, and I thought that Brett was accidentally going to kill me.â€? Alongside the millions watching it all unravel on screen was Emily Woods, one of eight women and three men to accuse Penn-

sylvania State Sen. Daylin Leach of sexual misconduct and harassment. “It takes a high level of bravery to go in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee and speak so openly. She is a hero, I don't know what else to say,� said Woods, 30, of Ford to Philadelphia Weekly. Earlier in the week, Woods was one of a number of sexual survivors who spoke up and out during Philadelphia’s iteration of the nationwide #BelieveSurvivors walk out on Sept. 24. Woods has reported Leach “groped� her thigh under a table at fundraiser while discussing his progressive stances on women’s rights. A rape survivor, the event left Woods feeling “humiliated� and triggered memories of her previous attack. Leach has denied the allegations of sexual misconduct that were brought by former campaign and legislative staff members in December of last year. But in January, Leach wrote an apology piece in the Philadelphia Inquirer. In the op-ed, Leach wrote, “I have always been a somewhat touchy person in

Woods explained that while neither Ford, Ramirez or herself were ultimately forced into non consensual sex, the incidences were sexual assault and underly characteristics in the attackers that are unsuitable for higher ofďŹ ce. “[The response to Dr. Ford’s attack] reminds me of a lot of the things that were said to me like, 'Oh well what's the big deal? It's only your leg that he touched,’" said Woods. “No, keep your hands and all of your other body parts to yourself. It's not that difďŹ cult.â€? In the case of Kavanaugh, events took a surprising turn on the Senate Judiciary Committee on Sept. 28 when Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Arizona) said he would only vote “yesâ€? on Kavanaugh's nomination being brought to the
full Senate after a one-week FBI investigation. The Senate Judiciary Committee vote was 11-10, by party lines, in favor of Kavanaugh. Subsequently, President Donald Trump ordered the supplemental investigation of the sexual misconduct allegations against Kavanaugh. As of now, there are three identiďŹ ed accusers against Kavanaugh: Dr. Ford, Deborah Ramirez and Julie Swetnick. Swetnick is the latest woman to come forward against Kavanaugh, claiming he and his friend Mark Judge facilitated gang rapes while in high school. She also alleged Kavanaugh was present at her own attack, although it is unclear whether her claims involve him as a direct assailant or as a bystander. Kavanaugh has denied all three women’s accusations. “The ďŹ rst thing I thought, that I put on Facebook, was why are white men so angry?â€? said Woods. “[Kavanaugh] showed himself to be belligerent and a bit of a short fuse. I don't want to use the word 'emotional,' but that's what it struck me as.â€? And as it related to her situation, it was on the same day that Dr. Ford and Kavanaugh both took to the Senate oor, Woods noticed Leach blocked her on Twitter. “[Leach] is another angry white man,â€? said Woods. “What a day to block a sexual assault survivor.â€? Woods could not conďŹ rm that Leach, in fact, blocked her on Sept. 27, but it was the day she noticed it. Looking at the partisan split in reaction to Kavanaugh and Dr. Ford, Woods said Democrats should not be patting themselves on the back too hard. They honestly did that, unfortunately, at a great political risk. I think that statement alone should tell you that the Democratic Party is not in the place that I would like it to be in,â€? explained Woods. “I think the Democratic Party as a whole could be more supportive.â€? Among those who did support Woods, she speciďŹ cally mentioned Rep. Leanne KruegerBraneky and Rep. Brian Sims, two representatives Woods worked for, and Gov. Tom Wolf, who called on Leach to resign. When asked if she had anything to say to Leach, Woods said simply, “Grow up and resign.â€? Back in February, Leach withdrew his congressional bid. Leach’s term as a Pennsylvania senator ends in 2020. I watched Dr. Ford speak and felt connected to my empowered, feminist self, but when I saw [Kavanaugh’s] angry face as he spoke – it was so familiar it made me literally nauseated ‌ I had to turn it off.� – A Philadelphia-area psychologist, who notes a similar sentiment coming repeatedly from her own clients in the aftermath of the hearings. Research on traumatic memory shows a survivor of a violent attack can very quickly be emotionally pulled back into the feelings of the incident and that this trauma is also programmed into survivors on a physiological level. For many survivors, hearing about the allegations against Kavanaugh – which include women besides Dr. Blasey Ford – have brought them back to their own assaults and triggered physical symptoms.

hen Dr. Christine Blasey Ford gave testimony at Brett Kavanaugh’s conďŹ rmation hearings, she described not only her own memories of being sexually assaulted, but also how memory about trauma is encoded in the brain. A research psychologist at Stanford, Dr. Blasey Ford was able to explain, scientiďŹ cally, how she is so certain that her attacker was the Supreme Court nominee. “The same way that I’m sure that I’m talking to you right now,â€? she replied, going on to describe how neurotransmitters encode memories into the hippocampus and adding, “the trauma-related experience is locked there, whereas other details kind of drift.â€?

In the wake of her allegations, many have questioned the accuracy of a decades-old memory. Researchers have responded, explaining how, while the perpetrator of a sexual crime may not have recall of the event, a victim may have a very salient recollection, although it would likely be lacking in details, like speciďŹ c date. For many survivors of sexual violence, the Kavanaugh-Ford proceedings have been an exercise in traumatic memory. In the aftermath, I caught up with a few sexual assault survivors on what a event of this magnitude does to their own psyche. “I thought I had moved on, I thought I was strong again. I used to tease my husband about yelling at the television during sports games like the players could actually hear him. But I found myself screaming like a lunatic at the screen, yelling about my story and why it’s things like this that have made it that I have never told anyone.â€? – Anonymous, 37, social worker, Lancaster County. “I haven't slept well in a week. I try to sleep, but my mind won't turn off. I'm hypervigilant

When those two survivors confronted Flake, I actually started to cry. Our kids are watching. Someday, I want rapists to experience more shame than their victims.â€? – Elizabeth, Queen Village “I feel trapped and furious. It’s infuriating to be forced to relive trauma. By the same token, it is empowering to see so many people stand on the right side of history. It is frustrating to see people who have disbelieved me or normalized my assault show their support.â€? – Shannon, Kensington “It's deďŹ nitely been really hard. Like Facebook is often my go-to when I need to distract myself and get out of my head. So it's been pretty difďŹ cult. I've been assaulted multiple times by different people, and I never even contemplated reporting it, and it's just so shitty to have people not understand that this is why? Also race has been a really big part of this with Cosby and everything. All these Black men and even some Black women acting like this is racism and whatnot and it's just hard when people who are supposed to support you – at least on one identity category – don't get how they are just part of this whole patriarchal problem. And then queer/lesbian women be like ‘oh just be with women’ like women don't assault people. It's just inescapable.â€? – Jordan, West Philadelphia Adding to the stress of the experience for many survivors are the comments online and in person from those trying to poke holes in Dr. Ford’s story. “My mother told me yesterday that women shouldn’t be allowed to accuse men of rape without real, signiďŹ cant evidence. She said,
‘what if someone accused your brother of something like that.’ She shames women who speak about their own assault instead of teaching her sons about consent. I wanted to tell her that I have no proof of being raped when I was 15, no proof of childhood sexual abuse. I broke up with my abusive boyfriend three months ago. I haven’t even told my therapist I was raped when I was 15, it didn’t seem bad or signiďŹ cant enough.â€? – Taylor, 22, Philadelphia There are many reasons survivors have for not going to the police with their attacks, mostly related to fears of not being believed or experiencing further trauma or retaliation. “It’s incredibly infuriating to know that the precedent is set – no matter who reports what it is more or less ignored,â€? says 26-year old Kelly, who says she did report her attack to police, who then failed to take her seriously. “I realized that he could easily escalate, and I warned the cops. I found out later that he attacked another girl in a similar way from the motorcycle guys in the street, but the girl didn’t have proper identiďŹ cation or papers, so she was too afraid to go to the cops. It made my blood boil. I knew it would happen and it did. They ignored my report and brushed it off. Now this asshole is out there somewhere probably doing worse things.â€? – Kelly P, 26 “I ended up getting talked out of pursuing the charges by the prosecutor. I had to ask myself if the slap on the wrist or possible two years in jail was worth it for me anymore. I was convinced that he'd kill me if I continued to pursue it ‌ so I agreed to drop the charges.â€? – Jamie, Asheville, North Carolina, a survivor “multiple times over,â€? who, after an assault by an ex-boyfriend, went to the police and had a rape kit performed. Despite that evidence, as well as the detective catching her assailant in multiple lies, was coerced to not pursue charges. Even for those who are not survivors, this event has been taxing, in part because of what the situation represents. Brett Kavanaugh is one of many white, wealthy, Ivy League-educated, straight men who already holds a position of power. He is standing at the precipice of gaining a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the land, where decisions about women’s bodily autonomy are decided. resident Donald Trump spoke at the National Electrical Contractors Association Convention in Philadelphia on Oct. 2. Inside the Convention Center, Trump addressed electricians and workers, focusing topics on job growth and taxes. Outside the building, a moderate-sized crowd of protesters gathered. People called out the President on a range of issues, including healthcare, environmental, race and women’s rights. But above all, were signs of support for Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, the research psychologist who testiďŹ ed before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Sept. 27 that Supreme Court Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh had sexually assaulted her back in 1982. Later that same day, Trump mocked Ford at a rally in Mississippi. After calling out Ford’s lapse of memory on the exact date, time and location of the alleged assault, Trump went onto say the victim in the situation is Kavanaugh. “A man's life is shattered," said Trump, in reference to Kavanaugh, at the rally. "These are really evil people." An FBI investigation is currently underway to investigate the multiple claims of Kavanaugh’s sexual misconduct. “It’s crazy that right now it’s considered a controversial thing that women’s feelings and their rights to not be assaulted is a topic of conversation,â€? said Jillian Neff, a protester. “It should be obvious.â€? While the group ran into one counter protester en route, the main defenders of Trump and Kavanaugh were a number of the participants from the National Electrical Contractors Association Convention. Trump was nowhere to be seen when the the convention doors opened up, but several participants and protesters engaged in a battle of words, physically divided by a gate. “The sad thing to me is this, our economy is better than its been in over 10 years, unemployment is down, those are facts,â€? said David Zeller, an attendee at the convention and owner of an electrical company in Illinois. “All these people want to talk about is

Protestors were out in full force as President Trump made a stop in Philadelphia, Tuesday, at the annual NECA Convention in Center City. somebody’s a racist or Kavanaugh is a rapist. There is no proof in fact to that yet.â€? Not all of the convention attendees were supporters of Trump. Amy Ferve, a California resident and wife to an electrical contractor, felt the “room was splitâ€? politically. “They were expecting over 2,000 people and half the room was empty,â€? said Ferve, a self-identiďŹ ed liberal. Ferve admired the protesters, standing on the other side of the partition. “I think it’s amazing. It’s our amendment rights in action, and this is how it should be,â€? Ferve added. The demonstration included a march around City Hall, a brief die-in, singing and chants. Heading much of the day’s actions were banner and poster illustrations of the Flyers’ new mascot Gritty. The much discussed, orange mascot was even used in chants, including “Gritty hates Trump.â€? Not like the playful Gritty references, the other main symbol of the day was hangers. The common household item represented the unsafe instruments many women used to perform abortions before Roe v. Wade, the case that legalized abortion in the U.S. Prochoice advocates have expressed fears over Kavanaugh, a pro-life judge, overturning the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision. Among the individuals and social justice groups present at the protest was an elderly, wheelchair-bound woman who goes by the name of SpitďŹ re. “I’ve been arrested 89 times,â€? said SpitďŹ re, a member and “secret weaponâ€? of the disability activist group ADAPT. SpitďŹ re said her reason for coming out was to protest the gowing hate she senses. “[Trump] hates immigrants, he hates Jews, he hates Blacks, he hates gays, he hates anybody different. I bet he hates himself,â€? stated SpitďŹ re, who also revealed she is a rape survivor when asked about her reaction to the Kavanaugh hearings. Q

$+u As to the title of your new album, Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life, can I just ask, what happened? I guess it's just a different way of saying, the ones closest to you are the ones most capable of destroying you. The ones that can do some serious damage. It's also been a running joke for a while with my wife. Even from the start we would go, "Oh my god, we are going to fuck each other up."
What’s different about this album from previous songs? I didn't really know what direction I wanted this fourth album to go in. I just wanted to do something that was organic and wasn't heavily produced, didn't have like swishes and swooshes. I just wanted to get as many good songs as I could as possible and then produce them tastefully, in an analog way. That was my goal for the sound.
What’s your favorite track? Probably, “Turn.â€? “Turnâ€? just feels like a song you only get to write every ďŹ ve years.
Who inspired you to write it? My wife. She's nuts.
Sounds like a real loving relationship. "We'll fuck each other up ‌ she's nuts." I like how your brain works with something like that, because that’s what we would say to each other at the start of our relationship. She's got like ADD and her thoughts are all over the place, so that's where the lyrics came from.

The Beatles wasn't exactly a template for us when we started. The Beatles aren't really a band anymore. They are sort of just massive and ethereal, so obviously they were a huge inuence on us and they are a huge inuence on popular music and popular culture. But we were ‘90s kids, so we were more about Radiohead and Smashing Pumpkins and things like that. But then again, I grew up listening to the Beatles and the Eagles and the Beach boys. But with all of those, with a sense of melody, we love melody, and I always wanted to make sure we had song melody within our music.
And Paul McCartney? I got a music degree at his [Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts] in Liverpool. I got to meet him a few times, we talked, but he didn't really get us a record deal or give us a helping hand or anything. He really gave us the time to be creative and his school gave me three years to really just hone in on my craft and write as many songs as possible. Did lots of gigs, and understand the music industry a bit better than I did.

rock group from Liverpool, England, with a band name of a living creature. Can you guess? Nope, not The Beatles. They are The Wombats, and they are scurrying on over to our fair shores to perform their latest album, Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life, at the Fillmore on Oct. 19. Formed in 2003, the group is comprised of three members: lead vocalist and guitarist Matthew Murphy, drummer Dan Haggis and bassist Tord Ă˜verland Knudsen. Over the years, The Wombats have burrowed a nice home in the indie music scene. Having dropped their latest, fourth album in February, including the chart-topping hit single “Turn,â€? the group is just kicking off their North American tour. The Englishmen have traveled to Philadelphia on a number of occasions and, when not guilt-eating cheesesteaks, have performed at various venues, such as at Union Transfer this past January. Philadelphia Weekly spoke with Murphy to learn more about the 34-year-old artist, the group’s current album and tour, and if rumblings of a new band mean the end of The Wombats as we know it.

I read that a few years back, Paul McCartney was going to produce an album for The Wombats. Did that not come to fruition? He said that in some interview. I'm pretty certain our manager emailed his, but nothing came back. I'm pretty sure it was just words coming out of his mouth. But if he wants to produce a song, we would absolutely shit ourselves with joy.
On the note of producing songs, I hear you are starting a new band. Should fans be worried that this is more of a farewell tour for The Wombats? No, not at all. I am all in with The Wombats. There were a lot of songs left over from the fourth album, and I just had a desire to try something else, use those songs and write some more. It's really going well. I signed the record deals months ago, and I'm really excited about it. But The Wombats is my main priority.

$+u Do you have a sense of when the album will drop? Next year at some point, but I don't know when. But I think we are doing a couple of EPs and then the album will drop. But I still have got a bit more writing to do and have studio time in LA booked for January. So I am really excited about it, but I keep changing the band name every few weeks so that's been getting a bit ridiculous.
Did you always know you wanted to be a musician? I never really knew what I wanted to be. I was and still am obsessed with golf. So I supposed I wanted to work in the golf industry somehow or pro. Not a tour pro, I was not nearly good enough. It was really golf and music that were my two passions. I'm probably more passionate about golf, but that's probably because music is my career and my work and golf is my hobby. If I ip-opped it, I'd probably feel the same about golf.

s it even possible for a couple that stopped having sex to start back up again? My girlfriend and I (we’re both women) have been together for four years, and we haven’t had sex for two. I thought the sex was good before it stopped, but apparently she was going through the motions. She’s a sex worker, and it took her a while to ďŹ gure out she was not being present, and she wanted to stop having sex with me until she could ďŹ gure out how to change that. I get that and respect it. We have an open relationship, so I started having more sex with other people. And while it’s fun, I do ďŹ nd myself wishing I could have sex with someone I actually care about – and I only care about her. She says she wants to start having sex with me again, but we don’t really know how to do that. Everything is kind of terrifying and awkward. She said it’s hard to go from sex with zero intimacy into sex with the intimacy turned up to 11. We’re very romantic with each other, and there are other forms of physical affection like kisses and snuggling, but no making out or humping. I love her more than I knew I could love a person, and if we never do ďŹ gure out how to have sex together, I’ll still stay with her. But for two people who are both highly sexual and want to have sex with each other, we sure are perplexed at how to make this work. – Sex Or Romance Dilemma “Let’s cut to the chase: Yes, it is possible for a couple that has stopped having sex to start having it again,â€? said Dr. Lori Brotto, a clinical psychologist and a sex researcher at the University of British Columbia. You ended on a note of despair, SORD, but Brotto sees two good reasons for hope: You and your girlfriend are completely open and honest with each other, and you’re committed to staying together whether or not the sex resumes. Your communication skills and that rock-solid commitment – neither of you are going anywhere – are the bedrock on which you can rebuild your sex life. “There are two aspects of SORD’s question that jump out at me: One, the reference

to wanting to be present for sex, and two, the description of the situation as terrifying and awkward,â€? said Brotto. “SORD’s girlfriend likely perfected the practice of ‘going elsewhere’ during sex while at work, which meant that it became almost automatic for her to do this while having sex in her relationship. This is classic mindlessness, and it is why mindfulness – the state of full awareness to the present moment in a kind and compassionate way – may be a tool for her to consider implementing.â€? Mindfulness is the subject of Brotto’s new book, Better Sex Through Mindfulness: How Women Can Cultivate Desire. “Mindfulness has a long history in Buddhist meditation, and it allowed monks to sit with their present experience, including pain and suffering, for hours or days – or sometimes weeks and months,â€? said Dr. Brotto. “In more recent years, mindfulness has been reconceptualized as a tool that anyone can use and beneďŹ t from. It doesn’t rely on having a Buddhist orientation or a cave to retreat to.â€? So how does this ancient mindfulness stuff work where modern girl-on-girl sex is concerned? “The practice is simple,â€? said Brotto. “It involves deliberately paying attention to sensations, sounds, and thoughts in the present moment – and noticing when the mind gets pulled elsewhere and then gently but ďŹ rmly guiding it back. Mindfulness is also about not berating yourself for ďŹ nding it challenging or judging yourself for the thoughts you have.â€? In her practice, Dr. Brotto has seen research subjects successfully use mindfulness to cultivate and/or reignite sexual desire, calm anxiety, and relieve the awkwardness and fear that some people experience with sex. “SufďŹ ce it to say,â€? she said, “there is an impressive body of research that supports the practice of mindful sex, and people who otherwise may believe that their minds are incapable of staying still can effectively learn to fully engage their attention to sex and the person(s) with whom they are having sex. It doesn’t matter if you are skeptical about whether mindfulness works or not – if you are willing to learn the skills and apply it to sex, you’re likely to beneďŹ t.â€?
