Why Haven’t Senior Homeowners Been Told These Facts?
Keep reading if you own a home in the U.S. and were born before 1955. It’s a well-known fact that for many senior citizens in the U.S. their home is their single biggest asset, often accounting for more than 50% of their total net worth. Yet, according to new statistics from the mortgage industry, senior homeowners in the U.S. are now sitting on more than 6.1 trillion dollars of unused home equity.1 With people now living longer than ever before and home prices back up again, ignoring this “hidden wealth may prove to be short sighted. All things considered, it’s not surprising that more than a million homeowners have already used a government-insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage or “HECM loan to turn their home equity into extra cash for retirement. However, today, there are still millions of eligible homeowners who could benefit from this FHA-insured loan but may simply not be aware of this “retirement secret. Some homeowners think HECM loans sound “too good to be true. After all, you get the cash you need out of your home but you have no more monthly mortgage payments.
NO MONTHLY MORTGAGE PAYMENTS?2 EXTRA CASH? It’s a fact: no monthly mortgage payments are required with a government-insured HECM loan;2 however the homeowners are still responsible for paying for the maintenance of their home, property taxes, homeowner’s insurance and, if required, their HOA fees.
Another fact many are not aware of is that HECM reverse mortgages first took hold when President Reagan signed the FHA Reverse Mortgage Bill into law 29 years ago in order to help senior citizens remain in their homes. Today, HECM loans are simply an effective way for homeowners 62 and older to get the extra cash they need to enjoy retirement. Although today’s HECM loans have been improved to provide even greater financial protection for homeowners, there are still many misconceptions. For example, a lot of people mistakenly believe the home must be paid off in full in order to qualify for a HECM loan, which is not the case. In fact, one key advantage of a HECM is that the proceeds will first be used to pay off any existing liens on the property, which frees up cash flow, a huge blessing for seniors living on a fixed income. Unfortunately, many senior homeowners who might be better off with HECM loan don’t even bother to get more information because of rumors they’ve heard. That’s a shame because HECM loans are helping many senior homeowners live a better life. In fact, a recent survey by American Advisors Group (AAG), the nation’s number one HECM lender, found that over 90% of their clients are satisfied with their loans. While these special loans are not for everyone, they can be a real lifesaver for senior homeowners. The cash from a HECM loan can be used for any purpose. Many people use the money to save on interest charges by paying off credit cards or other high-interest
)$&7 ,Q 3UHVLGHQW 5HDJDQ VLJQHG DQ )+$ ELOO WKDW SXW +(&0 ORDQV LQWR ODZ loans. Other common uses include making home improvements, paying off medical bills or helping other family members. Some people simply need the extra cash for everyday expenses while others are now using it as a “safety net for financial emergencies. If you’re a homeowner age 62 or older, you owe it to yourself to learn more so that you can make an informed decision. Homeowners who are interested in learning more can request a free 2018 HECM loan Information Kit and free Educational DVD by calling American Advisors Group toll-free at 1-800-266-3202. At no cost or obligation, the professionals at AAG can help you find out if you qualify and also answer common questions such as: 1. What’s the government’s role? 2. How much money might I get? 3. Who owns the home after I take out a HECM loan? You may be pleasantly surprised by what you discover when you call AAG for more information today.

FROM THE EDITOR
Bye bye, Bill KERITH GABRIEL
O
n the issue of race as it relates to the case of Bill Cosby... There is no issue. In the aftermath of this prolonged saga that has been the trial and ďŹ nally sentencing of a once beloved actor, endower and lover of all things Philadelphia, there are some people who don’t want to believe that “America’s Dad,â€? was actually sneaking rooďŹ es into drinks and drugging women in exchange for whatever creepy shit he did to countless women. The debate already surfacing across some social media platforms is that race played a role in Cosby’s Tuesday sentencing where the 81-year-old will spend the next 3-10 years behind bars for sexual assault. The notion is that white men in the business have done way worse and they haven’t seen a day in prison, that somehow Cosby was to be made an example of and is a victim of an ever-growing racial divide in America. That, Black men and women, is 110 percent bullshit. If this accusation was only Andrea Constand, one could make the argument that this is a he said, she said story, that Constand was only looking for 15 minutes, or a bite of the Cosby pot or was just a woman scorned by Cosby and wanted revenge. But this is over 50 women with an account of similar actions happening to them at the hands of a man who, in the eyes of many, was a good person, someone who gave millions to ensure the growth of a university, who put many kids at that same university through school on his own dime. Who was a pillar in Philadelphia and to many served as the dad we all wished we had. Actually, I’m not in that category. James Avery was my TV dad. And Uncle Phil wasn’t putting Quaaludes in Aunt Viv’s wine glass. Plus, I’m sorry, but 50-plus

women aren’t lying. Or just out to get Bill Cosby. They’re just not. This is the systematic failure of a man in power and regardless of color, Cosby had his day in court – and then another one following a mistrial – and had the evidence be so overwhelming and subsequently damning that there was only one decision. Andrew Wyatt, Cosby’s assistant, you know the guy during this entire saga who could be found holding Cosby’s hand escorting him to and from the courtroom, told reporters after the verdict, that Cosby’s trial was “the most racist and sexistâ€? court proceeding in U.S. history. Guess he never heard of that little case involving one Orenthal James Simpson. Look racism is alive and well. We as people of color are all victim to it at some point or another. Just this week while I’m with my son, a middle-aged woman asked me if my child was mine. When I replied yes, she acted surprised responding simply, “oh, is his mom white?â€? As if this beautiful boy with tanned skin and curly owing locks couldn’t possibly be a product of a balding black man. I don’t need a lecture on the plight of people of color, trust me I get it. But not in this case. What Bill Cosby did was wrong, evil, heinous and he’s lucky that 3 years in state prison is all he’ll receive. Assuming he comes out of jail alive and thriving, he’ll return to his stately mansion, yes labeled a sex offender, but one sitting on millions. Life will carry on. This is not a black and white issue. This is one of women’s empowerment, a moment in history where hopefully change is made to remedy decades-old entitlement of every gross guy with power who thought he could put his hands on a woman – or man – because of his status. Harvey Weinstein, Les Moonves and others are all on the hot seat as afuent white men with power in Hollywood. In the case of Cosby, it just so happened that the initial stand came on the back of a black man, a race that has been dragged through the mud historically in the country. But in this one case I urge my fellow brothers and sisters to see the true crime here, and not its color. Q TWITTER: @SPRTSWTR

Over the past year or so, the Barnes Foundation has gone to some pretty great lengths to shed the notion of being a high brow arts museum and instead a place of the people, the mission of its founder Albert C. Barnes. The cherry was thought to be Monument Lab and its Restorative Justice partnership with Mural Arts Philadelphia, but the Barnes has come up with another cool event kicking off on Oct. 11. Called the Barnes Takeover, the museum will host a series featuring local poets, performers and other artists to interpret the Barnes collection in their own unique way. First up in the monthly series is Philly poet Ursula Rucker, who will equate some of the Barnes’ metalwork pieces in a collection to the strength of love using not just spoken word, but through a mix of imagery and music. It’s the ďŹ rst in an ongoing series that will return Nov. 17 featuring a pair of multidisciplinary performers known as The Gorgeousity. So to all of you who doubted, no, the Barnes isn’t just a cool venue where afuent people get hitched. Q

Goes to the marketing team of the Philadelphia Flyers for creating the ugliest mascot in the city and having the sports landscape go crazy over it. If you haven’t seen “Gritty by now, you either don’t like sports or don’t watch much TV because he’s been everywhere. This giant orange Muppet figure was unveiled earlier this week and while the response has been one of sheer laughter, it’s also been laughter that’s been widespread. We all know that bad news or good news in marketing is still news, so chalk this one up as a win-win for the Flyers front office. Q

State funding for public schools has increased significantly under current Pennsylvania governor Tom Wolf. But not as much as pension plans for school employees, according to a Philly.com report this week. While over $2 billion dollars has been distributed for the funding of schools, only less than a third of it ($566.5 million) has gone to actual education funding. A whopping $1.3 billion has gone to funding pension costs for employees. How that’s fair to the kids many of these same administrators claim to be fighting for is beyond us. Q

The Arden’s iteration of Once, is a twist on the Broadway production of the play.

n a small, Irish pub, a young man plays his guitar. Reverberating passed barstools and beer mugs, his song strikes the chord of a Czech woman and fellow musician. That’s when Guy meets Girl. Really, those are the main characters’ names of the acclaimed musical “Once.â€? Bonded by music, and with a motley crew of musical Dubliners, they make a CD. Based on the 2006 ďŹ lm, the musical “Onceâ€? brings in a folk-rock repertoire of songs, including the movie’s Oscar-winning song “Falling Slowly.â€? Winner of eight 2012 Tony awards, “Onceâ€? just opened at the Arden Theater on Sept. 26. PW stopped by a rehearsal to talk with the cast and crew to ďŹ nd out about Arden’s latest production. “What I love about contemporary musical theater is that it keeps pushing the boundaries of what we expect from a musical, and that
the art form keeps trying new things, said Terry Nolan, the producing artistic director and co-founder of the Arden Theater. “[In ‘Once,’] the music takes place in front of you, around you, behind you, so hopefully you feel as if you're inside of the music. Diverting from the Broadway production, Nolan hopes to push his own boundaries by presenting the decade-old show in a new light. “The Broadway production was awesome, but it was a while back in a very different kind of space, said Nolan. “So our goal with this is to involve the audience in a very different way. With a simple set lain with vintage rugs, Nolan elevates the intimacy of the piece and preserves the character-importance of both music and setting. Performing in the 360-degree F. Otto Haas Stage, Nolan explained the immersive space lends itself to the show’s communal nature. An ensemble-heavy performance, the 13

After taking one look at the 2006 acclaimed film, Arden co-founder Terry Nolan said he had to have the love play out on his stage. actors play an integral role in the show and a wide-range of instruments, from the cello to the accordion. Scott Greer learned how to play the mandolin for the part of Billy, the music store owner who allows Girl to play his piano since she cannot afford her own. “I played guitar for my audition, and they were like ‘Can you play mandolin?’ I was like, ‘sure it has strings, you strum it,’â€? said Greer. “[Working at the Arden], you're always challenged and pushed into a new direction, and now I'm learning the mandolin.â€? Greer has been in 32 productions at the Arden Theater, his ďŹ rst being in 1994 during a run of “Sunday in The Park with George.â€? Already conďŹ rmed for his thirty-third Arden role, Greer will be performing in the one-man
show “Every Brilliant Thing,â€? opening Nov. 8. This is Katherine Fried’s ďŹ rst Philly production. The 24-year-old actress left her hometown of Minneapolis to play the lead role of Girl, all while learning how to speak in the character’s Czechoslovakian accent. “I'm still working on it every day. We had a really extraordinary vocal coach and it's been wonderful to listen to different, random interviews with tennis players and politicians,â€? said Fried, whose singing voice has hints of Alanis Morissette and a range of Evanescence’s Amy Lee. “[Girl has] been living in Dublin for a while and probably learned British English, so there are all these little nuances to her cadence of speech and pronunciation of different words. It's been fun to play with.â€? The fairly simple storyline of “Onceâ€? allows for a rich tableau of characters and music to ourish. A young mother with not much more than the clothes on her back, Girl is equipped with her music ability and, central to the story, a broken vacuum cleaner -- a Hoover to be precise. “I like to think of that as a really magical connection piece of 'here, I have something that's broken and I need something that will ďŹ x it. And you have something that's broken and you need someone to ďŹ x that.' So we trade props,â€? said Fried. “I'm bringing him the music and he's bringing me something to clean up my life with. I think they're both really beautiful symbols.â€? From the moment Nolan saw “Once,â€? he knew he wanted it for the Arden. “I think the timing right now is particularly good,â€? explained Nolan. “[The musical] is very much a celebration of the power of music to bring peoxdvnple together, and to create an event that could only take place here, now and at the theater.â€? Nolan mentioned time, particularly the country’s current political state, as one of the important reasons for putting on the musical now. While not inherently political, Nolan said he ďŹ nds the narrative’s theme of unity as a challenge to today’s draconian reality. Not to mention, the plot centralizes on an immigrant, Girl, being welcomed in another country, a storyline which resurfaces the ongoing anti-immigration policies pushed by the White House. “These are such divided, turbulent times, and hopefully this is a refuge about people coming together,â€? said Nolan. “This is a story of people from different backgrounds and how they connect. I ďŹ nd it very moving and very afďŹ rming.â€? Q Once | Sept. 26-Oct. 21. Tickets starting at $37. Discounts available for seniors, students and groups. Kurt Vile’s personal studio in Northern Liberties would be considered the venue of dreams for almost any musician.
Magic in a bottle We gain a deeper perspective of music, Little League Baseball and male gigolos after an afternoon spent with rocker Kurt Vile BY TOM BECK
“
It's this pretty gritty tale of, like, this guy – I don't know if she picks up a male gigolo or there's, like, sex going on, Kurt Vile begins, explaining the title track from Lou Reed’s 1978 album Street Hassle. “And then she ODs and then they just lay her out on the street. We were spinning Sonic Youth’s SYR4: Goodbye 20th Century on Vile’s record player in his Northern

Liberties workspace. But after I complimented Vile’s Lou Reed T-shirt and conďŹ ded in him that I hadn’t explored much of Reed’s solo stuff despite being a big Velvet Underground fan, he insists I take a listen to Street Hassle. “It’s long urban poetry about just dumping somebody on the street when they OD,â€? he told me, explaining the album’s title track. “You have to listen to it again later.â€? After interviews with the Inquirer and Playboy earlier in the afternoon, Philly Weekly is Vile’s last press meet-
ing of the day, but he’s not tired of talking yet. His latest album, Bottle it In, is slated to come out Oct. 12 on Matador Records and the excitement is apparent. “One of my goals was to make it as live as possible in the studio so organic moments are captured with whoever I'm playing with,â€? Vile said while staring at the ground, appearing to chase an invisible mouse around the oor with his eyes. “I'm always reaching for that, but the band got tighter and it was more like we'd be able to capture true moments with the whole band. In the past I've always noticed that those are the best [moments].â€? When you step in the front door of the workspace, which used to be the Vile family’s main living quarters until he bought another spot in Mount Airy, it quickly becomes clear that it’s a musician’s dream environment. Two Fender guitars lie in a choreographed manner on the couch, similar to the way a young boy would show off his toy trucks. Two ampliďŹ ers are tucked next to the wall just below two-thirds of a triptych collage Vile made himself in high school. In the next room of the old trinity house, his extensive record collection takes up an entire ketchupcolored wall, plus a book and CD collection that takes up the adjacent wall. An old upright piano sits on the side of the room opposite of the CD collection, and above it all is an ornate octopus chandelier made by local artist Adam Wallacavage. “I'm a patron of the arts,â€? Vile says, “but I'm deeper into music and stuff of course.â€? On Bottle it In, Vile demonstrates his ability to make long songs sound short. Three of the album’s tracks, “Bottle it In,â€? “Skinny Miniâ€? and the most recent single “Backasswards,â€? hover around the 10-minute range, which you won’t notice unless you glance at the liner notes. The songs are owing, driving and Vile’s mid-song quips provide smirk-worthy moments of comic relief in an otherwise serene indie-folk record. You’ll ďŹ nd yourself perpetually bobbing your head. When I listen to it, I imagine myself sitting in the window seat on an early morning fall train ride through suburban Pennsylvania, gazing at the leafless trees surrounding the railroad tracks – probably not unlike a scene you’d ďŹ nd in Vile’s nearby Delco hometown of Lansdowne where he was one of 10 children growing up.
“For me, Lansdowne was just a lot of playing banjo, recording on my tape recorder upstairs, lots of skateboarding,â€? he says, reminiscing. “There was a cool record store called CR CDs, which I would go to all the time. I'd cut class and go there and get stuff until [the school] caught onto it.â€? He’s less reminiscent about playing Little League baseball, which his parents would regularly sign him up for despite his lack of interest. He could never quite wield a baseball bat the way he could a guitar. “I would come home on the weekend after school stoked to do whatever,â€? he explains, “and they'd be like 'you got a game' and I was like 'fuuuuuck.'â€? Vile doesn’t come off as terribly competitive so it’s easy to understand his disinterest in sports. In fact, the tranquil nature of Bottle it In very much matches Vile’s personality. It reects a country-inuenced side of him that he’s been exploring lately. Lots of Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Billie Joe Shaver have graced Vile’s turntable, and it shows in his music. The album even contains a cover of Charlie Rich’s “Rollin’ With the Flow.â€? Nobody saw that coming. He’s also been rediscovering some of the music he listened to in his teens, like ‘90s indie rock band the Silver Jews, and also enjoying new stuff. He singles out Big Thief’s most recent album, Capacity, as one he’s particularly enjoyed. “Female energy,â€? he says has also inspired Bottle it In. His last major project was an album he made and toured with Courtney Barnett, whom he developed a keen friendship and working relationship with based on a mutual admiration for each other's work. “We just bounced off each other,â€? he says. “The music and the artform combined with our friendship, they all just kind of grew at the same time. It was really cool.â€? In addition to playing with Barnett, Vile also played with Warpaint drummer Stella Mozgawa on the new album. Her drumming can be heard on three new tracks: “One Trick Ponies,â€? “Bottle it Inâ€? and “Cold Was the Wind.â€? “It was such a positive experience,â€? he says. “People are negative on purpose when they're dudes. That's kind of what we do. It's different when you're outnumbered with chicks. ‌ If there's too many dudes it gets pretty [stupid] pretty

quick.â€? If you look up just about any interview Vile has ever done, he makes a point to mention two of his biggest idols, Neil Young and John Prine. At exactly 28 minutes and 36 seconds into the recording of our interview, he mentions them both, unprompted, during a tangent about WTF with Marc Maron, a podcast Prine, Young and Vile have all been guests on. He speaks highly of Prine and Young, calling them “American heroes.â€? Yes, Neil Young is Canadian. But he lives in America. For this reason, according to Vile, he still qualiďŹ es. “Neil Young – you go and see him live and you fucking blow your head off,â€? Vile says of the superstar folk artist, who, by the way, has two upcoming solo shows at the Tower Theater. Vile will miss both courtesy of a press thing Matador’s making him go to in L.A; and yes, he’s pretty bummed about it. Speaking of amazing concerts, Vile is set to kick off his world tour in Hamburg, Germany, on Oct. 12. After he makes his way through Europe, he’ll tour the states, which will include a stop at The Met in Philly on Dec. 29.

“I'm excited for the band to unleash this,â€? he says, pushing his luscious brown hair out of his face even though it always returns right back to how it was. “It has the potential to rock even harder live.â€? Although he’s excited, he says he also has to “pace himself.â€? He’s trying to live a healthier lifestyle. His wife Suzanne has gotten him into yoga and he’s making a point adjust to a normal sleeping schedule. In the past, he routinely worked nocturnally when working on albums, often not falling asleep until the sun came up. Why? Because there’s more “cosmic energy,â€? he explains, (probably) jokingly. “There's more cosmic energy oating around that's all for you because everybody else is asleep not taking it in,â€? he muses, “but that's just [me] making up a spiel.â€? With the political environment the way it is and the 21st century distractions that come with it, Vile’s music and whimsical nature is maybe a little bit of what we all need out of life. If the world’s got you down, just remember to have no fear. Kurt Vile is here. And he appreciates you to the utmost degree. Q

espite new allegations of sexual misconduct against Supreme Court Justice nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh, including a third unnamed accuser, Republicans continue to push for a quick conďŹ rmation vote. Incensed at the notion, a group of roughly 100 people took to Dilworth Park City Hall on Sept. 24 to protest the upcoming vote and the treatment of Kavanaugh’s identiďŹ ed accusers, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Deborah Ramirez. Fueled by #MeToo founder Tarana Burke, who recently spoke in Philadelphia at the Wilma Theater, Philly’s version of the demonstration was part of a national walkout under the hashtag #BelieveSurvivors. Dressed in black, sexual assault survivors and allies convened, shared personal stories in an effort to hold ofďŹ cials in power accountable for their actions. Speakers included Emily Woods, Tonya Bah, Blessing Osazuwa, Gwen Snyder, and Nina Ahmad. Bah, a community activist and candidate for city council, revealed that she had been molested at 8 years old. “The Supreme Court nominee violated a 15-year-old girl. She found the courage to report it before more power is placed in the wrong hands,â€? said Bah. “The revolution has already begun. Stand ďŹ rm with it. We stand with Dr. Ford. Stand up and ďŹ ght back.â€? But Kavanaugh was not the only political ďŹ gure directly addressed at the walkout. Pennsylvania Sen. Daylin Leach was also a central person of discussion. The Democrat senator has faced his own allegations of sexual misconduct, including inappropriate touching and language. One of his accusers, Emily Woods, spoke
at the walkout about how he “groped her thigh at a fundraiser while talking about his track record of progressive women’s rights. A rape survivor, Woods told the crowd the incident with Leach resurfaced memories of the other attack. Leach has reportedly denied claims of sexual misconduct. Woods told PW she is once again triggered by the news of Kavanaugh. “It’s been triggering. I’m not going to lie to you. If anything, it makes me feel so much closer to Dr. Ford and to Deborah Ramirez and now the third accuser, Woods said after her speech. “I guess to a certain degree, it does remind me so much of what I went through. I say that to empathize, not to recenter it on myself. Kavanaugh has denied the allegations set by Ford and Ramirez. Both Kavanaugh and Ford are set to testify in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday, Sept. 27. The reports against Kavanaugh date back to his college and high school days. When asked whether the statute of limitations lessens the severity of Kavanaugh’s case, Woods replied in the negative. “I think this is somebody who has now shown himself to be a serial sexual predator. Who won’t admit it under oath but has been a strident opponent of Roe vs. Wade and women’s bodily autonomy, Woods argued. Culminating the speakout portion of the event, organizer and speaker Gwen Snyder had the group write two tweets: “@ChuckGrassley we #believesurvivors and we believe Dr. Blasey Ford and we believe women and “@daylinleach we #believesurvivors and we call on you to resign. Q TWITTER: @ANDREAJCANTOR

Tino Fuentes has made it his life’s mission to distribute test strips to drug users in harm reduction efforts. A former user himself, Fuentes says the days of pure drugs are a thing of the past.
Passing the test
Tino Fuentes isn’t telling drug users to quit like he did. But he his making them aware of the dangers inside their baggies BY COURTENAY HARRIS BOND
L
ong before Philadelphia started its recent initiative to distribute fentanyl test strips to community organizations and conduct trainings on how to effectively use them, Faustino “Tino Fuentes had been bounding around the East Coast and other parts of the country, handing out the strips to users and dealers to detect the presence of this deadly synthetic opioid in their street drugs. Puerto Rican and Cuban, born poor to a single mother in Brooklyn, Fuentes started selling and using drugs at a young age. “That was how I made my living. I wanted to eat, right? Fuentes starts. “I wanted to
have brand new sneakers. Capitalism doesn’t reach us down here, so we had to reach up and grab it somehow. And that’s how I grabbed it.â€? Eventually, Fuentes, 55, stopped using heroin through a combination of Suboxone and Methadone here and there and he called it, “going through the bullshit, going through the painâ€? of withdrawal.â€? Pretty soon, Fuentes found his calling in harm reduction. He worked at St. Ann’s Corner of Harm Reduction in the South Bronx and then quit to become one of the ďŹ rst people to distribute fentanyl test strips in this country. The Philadelphia Department of Public Health is in the process of giving out 10,000
6(37(0%(5 2&72%(5
of them to a handful of public agencies, such as Prevention Point Philadelphia, groups that work with drug-using populations. The strips cost $1 each. Fuentes, who lives in Newark, New Jersey came to Philadelphia to do a training for the city’s Department of Public Health. The city also hired a harm-reduction coordinator to oversee initiatives such as the test strip one – marking Philadelphia’s efforts to start embracing the idea of harm reduction, of meeting people where they are in their lives. Since it is widely known that most of the heroin in Philadelphia is either polluted by fentanyl or is pure fentanyl – an opioid pain medication that can be synthesized illegally and that is roughly 100 times more potent than morphine – some people wondered if the city’s test strip initiative was too little, too late. However, Allison Herrens, who has served as Philadelphia’s harm-reduction coordinator for about one year, said she hoped the effort to teach people how to use the strips would extend the general conversation about harm reduction during the opioid crisis. “Just like every other harm-reduction effort, it’s not going to save everyone’s life,â€? Herrens said about the test strip initiative. “But it opens the door to conversations with people to help reinforce safer [drug-using] practices. It opens it up to a much bigger conversation that should be happening on a regular basis.â€? While he would not consider the test strips to be drug “paraphernalia,â€? Patrick Trainor, supervisory special agent and spokesman for the Drug Enforcement Administration in Philadelphia, said his “issueâ€? with them is that “fentanyl is such a rapidly evolving synthetic drug that I would be very hesitant on relying on them [test strips] to provide an accurate reading of what is currently out there and identifying if the substances are, in fact, fentanyl-free. All ďŹ eld testing, even by law enforcement agencies, is presumptive at best.â€? In other words, even with the strips, no one is completely safe. The strips detect up to nine different fentanyl analogues, though roughly 50 exist. Plus, fentanyl is also adulterating other forms of street drugs, such as cocaine and K2, a deadly synthetic cannabinoid, Herrens said. That’s why the city ultimately hopes to encourage outreach workers and people who use to make the most of the strips by testing other popular drugs. “People don’t know what they’re using,â€? Herrens said, since what they think they’re buying is often not what they get. As part of the city’s test strip initiative, community organizations are surveying users. In one survey, a user reported that because his heroin tested positive for fentanyl, he did not inject it. It’s these types of baby steps that are both startling and motivating, Herrens said. She also applauds Fuentes: “I think what Tino does is incredibly important. Back when he started talking about this, more people should have listened. Tino is a great educator,
he’s honest, and he knows what he’s talking about. He’s so dedicated. I’ve never met anyone as dedicated as Tino.â€? When Fuentes goes to a city, he connects with local harm-reduction organizations or friends, or he hits the streets himself, handing out naloxone, the opioid reversal medication, and strips and teaching people how to use them. He demonstrates how to empty a bag of heroin or other drugs onto a piece of paper and then dribble a few drops of water into the residue in the bag, using this to dip the strip in. Unlike many pregnancy tests, where one line means negative, with the fentanyl test strips one line means positive – positive for this synthetic opioid or one of nine of its analogues. While this reporter was with Fuentes, his phone kept ringing. He picked up a call from a dealer and user in Newark and reiterated that one line concludes positive for fentanyl. “I happen to be in Philly right now, but I’ll be home tomorrow, and we can go through the whole process,â€? Fuentes said before he hung up. The caller was an example of someone who was trying to look out for his customers, Fuentes said. “When I ďŹ rst talked to him, he didn’t know what fentanyl was, and he was like, ‘I don’t want to kill my people.’ So now he’s trying to do the right thingâ€? by testing his product before he sells it, Fuentes said. When people ask him if it’s hard, as a former user, to work around drugs, Fuentes said, “Well I don’t want to die with all the fentanyl bullshit out there. There’s no real heroin out there. But realistically, this is what keeps me going. I have family members and friends that have been lost, whether it’s to death, prison, or a combination of both. I’m just trying to help people stay alive.â€? “There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think that three people are going to die today,â€? Herrens echoed. Fuentes estimates he has used naloxone to reverse more than 100 overdoses in the past couple of years. “Every time that breath comes back, it’s amazing. Somebody’s going to live another day to make whatever choices they want. But they’re going to live another day.â€? Fuentes also doesn’t believe in conventional notions of “recovery.â€? “I don’t look at recovery as, you know, if your drug of choice was heroin and you stopped, then you have to stop everything. No, you don’t. But that’s the system we have, and that’s also the reason so many people lapse and end up dyingâ€? – because of the unrealistic standard of total abstinence, Fuentes said. Other debates aside, Fuentes ultimately believes that “nobody should die because they use drugs. That’s always been my mantra. Nobody should die because they use drugs.â€?Q TWITTER: @CHARRISBOND

Night Market Point Breeze
N
ight Market, the roving food and beer festival, is rolling out its eet of food trucks for one last go-round now that we’re into fall. Their destination, should they choose to accept their mission (which, of course they will, it’s their festival) – Point Breeze. Sample offerings from hundreds of vendors across Philadelphia while you wander the streets of Point Breeze listening to the sounds of frying and fraternizing and the various musical acts tabbed to provide a soundtrack for your evening. Think tacos. Think cheesesteaks. Think dumplings and ice cream and cupcakes. Think beer and brats and the last eeting moments of summer slipping away as the sun sets on yet another season. Or something like that. Oct. 4. Times and prices vary. 20th and Federal. thefoodtrust.org/night-market

SAVAGE LOVE
Needs & Deeds
I
DAN SAVAGE
’m a 62-year-old woman. I was married for 33 years and left ďŹ ve years ago. We hadn’t gotten along for years, but he never stopped wanting or valuing me for sex – in spite of treating me like a household appliance and cheating on me regularly. Not long after the marriage ended, I met a guy online (my same age) who ticked nearly every box on my partner checklist – one of which was an ongoing interest in maintaining sexual relations. In the beginning, things were hot and crazy – but they cooled after a few months (going from once or twice a day to maybe once a month). Other than that, the relationship continued to grow and we enjoyed being together. I tried to carefully broach the subject, but he was not forthcoming. I’m not proud of it, but I checked his internet history. Big surprise: LOTS OF PORN. No animals or children, but pretty much everything else, with an accent on trans. Eventually, I admitted my sleuthing and asked if his viewing habits were an indicator of his interests or the reason he had turned away from me. After the anger subsided, he explained that he had been single most of his life and had more or less gotten used to taking care of business solo. Also that the women he had been with who oated his boat sexually had been bad (crazy/unstable) in the partner department, and the good partners (me) had been less than satisfying for him in bed. The bottom line is that we are compatible in most every other area and have built a comfortable life together. We have intercourse every four to six weeks, and maybe once in between he will pleasure me. I enjoy both, and also take care of myself once a week. The struggle for me is more ego-driven. I’m no raving beauty, but I am reasonably ďŹ t and attractive for my age, and (used to) enjoy feeling desired and valued sexually. Can I get to the place of letting go of that and enjoy the rare occasions of physical congress? -- Sex Advice Please “Good for her for getting out of a marriage where she was treated like a ‘household appliance’ and getting back in the dating

game,â€? said Joan Price, author of the books Naked at Our Age: Talking Out Loud About Senior Sex and The Ultimate Guide to Sex After 50. “But her new relationship, while it sounds comfortable and affectionate, doesn’t sound sexually fulďŹ lling.â€? This relationship doesn’t just sound unfulďŹ lling sexually, SAP, it sounds infuriating generally. You entered into this relationship under false pretenses. You let your partner know that “an ongoing interest in maintaining sexual relationsâ€? was a priority for you, and he allowed you to believe it was a priority for him. In fairness to him, SAP, he may not have known himself to be incapable of sustaining a strong sexual connection, seeing as he’s been single for most of his life. But even if he wasn’t aware he couldn’t meet your needs then, that doesn’t change the fact that you aren’t valued/fucked the way you want to be valued/fucked now. “I think her best option is to stay friends with this guy but start dating and having sex with others,â€? said Price. “She could continue to have occasional sex with this man if they both agree to a nonexclusive, friends-withbeneďŹ ts arrangement. Or they could become platonic pals, if that’s better for them. But it’s imperative that she talk candidly with him.â€? You write that you tried to “carefully broach the subject, but he was not forthcoming,â€? but Price wonders whether you were forthcoming yourself. “‘Carefully broach’ usually means ‘I was vague,’â€? said Price. “Suppose, instead, she said, ‘I really value you, but I don’t think we’re well-matched sexually. How can we adjust our relationship so we’re not putting sexual pressure on each other and we’re both free to ďŹ nd other sexual outlets?’â€? Your partner has an outlet that works for him and pretty much meets all his needs – porn and his own hand – but you don’t have an outlet that provides you with the feeling of being desired and valued sexually. Watching porn and/or “taking care of yourselfâ€? isn’t going to meet your needs. So the question is this: Do you have to exit this loving relationship to get your needs met, or can you stay with your current partner, a man who meets your emotional and social needs, while getting your sexual needs met elsewhere? “SAP deserves a partner who matches her sexually,â€? said Price. And I agree.

WHEN HE HAD TO HE “HELD MY HAND. THERE WERE TIMES I WANTED TO TAKE MY HOUSE OFF THE MARKET, BUT PATRICK CONWAY WAS ALWAYS THERE WITH A POSITIVE ATTITUDE. HE ALSO ADVISED ME ON WHAT I NEEDED TO DO TO GET MY HOUSE READY FOR SALE AND EVEN SUGGESTED PAINTERS AND REPAIR PEOPLE I SHOULD USE.
