FROM THE EDITOR

Priorities. Let’s get them in check KERITH GABRIEL

T

here’s one thing the debacle that is the state of the American health care system has taught me and should teach all of us: start taking better care of your body. Like, now. As you can see, this current toilet paper of a health care bill hastily being shoved through the House of Representatives is similar to its two predecessors, offering to drastically increase premiums, screw citizens with pre-existing conditions and turn health care into a free market battle royale. At its core, it’s morally wrong but as we all know, politicians, lobbyists and anyone else associated that stands to proďŹ t rarely gives zero fucks about morals. Whether you lean left or right, you have to at least respect the people out there pushing for fair care for all. I know I do. I was blown away at the response here in Philly just this week of the people – many of whom stand to lose a great deal from these lackluster offerings – petitioning and preaching again outside of Sen. Pat Toomey’s ofďŹ ce. For people with pre-existing conditions it’s vital that there is an affordable health care bill to ensure a quality of life, but for those of us that don’t have health issues now is really the time to start thinking prevention. Take me for example, I’m a black man in my 30s that loves eating out and a good glass of bourbon every now and again. That also arrives with the consumption generally of simple carbohydrates, unnecessary sugars and whole lot of sodium. Numbers from the CDC note that two in every ďŹ ve African-Americans have high blood pressure and less than half of that number has it under control. So for me in this era of uncertainty, this has made for the perfect time for reection. Look, I’m one of the lucky ones. I have affordable care that’s comprehensive. I don’t smoke, I drink alcohol socially and I don’t have anything serious that qualiďŹ es as a pre-existing

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

condition. But that doesn’t mean something can’t go wrong tomorrow. We have to start taking care of ourselves, Philly. Clearly no one else is doing it for us. You think big pharma wants a cure for diabetes when their making a killing off of supplying insulin? You think a politician truly gives a shit if you die of colon cancer because you never saw a porterhouse you didn’t like? I learned a great deal about the state of health care in America (page 6) from the research that crafted this week’s cover piece. I spoke with activists, politicians, heads of insurance providers and you and the collective takeaway is that we’re all seriously screwed. A former colleague who hailed from India told me something once that I’ll never forget. He told me that in his region of India, cancer isn’t a thing. In fact, it simply doesn’t exist. It’s mainly diet – they aren’t routinely chasing cheesesteaks with diet soda or rushing to their nearest fast food spot. It’s a diet of grains, vegetables, beans and rice. It may not be as savory by Western standards, but it’s sustainable and more importantly keeps them out of the doctor’s ofďŹ ce. I just remember him saying, and it’ll always stick in my mind: “People just don’t get colon cancer where I’m from.â€? Point is, take better care of yourselves, Philly. Because in this current climate, you’re truly the only one that cares about you – unless of course you can afford to make it worth their while. -----------------------------------In completely unrelated news, I just want to note that there are people still stuck under rubble in Mexico, some who may be miraculously clinging to life without food or water for over a week. Additionally, there are people that can’t even relay a message to their families living in Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory because the decimated island is still without power and cell phone service. Meanwhile, the top stories surround the Donald Trump, Leader of the Free World, ďŹ ring up a North Korean despot who’s readily preparing for World War III and an entire sports league where athletes have banded to use their popularity for more than just the spoils that generally coincide. Good for ratings, I suppose. Q

In an interview with sports radio shock jock Angelo Cataldi on SportsRadio WIP (94.1FM), Elliott mentioned that he hit a gamewinning FG against Temple while as a kicker at the University of Memphis that made the Tigers bowl eligible. Remember the countless, exaggerated allegations about voter fraud in Philadelphia from the last campaign cycle? Well, last week, our local City Commissioner Al Schimdt announced that an error in the state’s voter registration system allowed 1,160 non-citizens to register to vote since the 1970s. About half of them had cast ballots in at least one election since then, but other specifics were scarce. Schmidt has already called to fix the glitch, and it should be addressed in short order. A rally in protest of the proposed Graham-Cassidy health care bill was the scene outside Sen. Pat Toomey’s Philadelphia office Monday.

Silent Majority Should big insurance be louder in fight for affordable health care? Their recipients and their bottom line say yes. BY KERITH GABRIEL

D

ana Richter could only shake her head as she sat in reection. For Richter, 43, a single mother of two from Bella Vista, Monday marked the third time she’s taken a day off from work to join scores of others from the Greater Philadelphia Region to denounce another health care bill that stood to drastically affect the health care of over 20 million Americans. Richter saying she’d deďŹ nitely be one of them. “I’ve been out of [Sen. Pat] Toomey’s ofďŹ ce way too much this year,â€? Richter said standing outside the U.S. Customs House on a unseasonably steamy September afternoon. I was here for the [July] campout and I’ve been to a few Tuesdays with Toomey events, but I feel like I had to be here, given this has been the worst plan placed on the table.â€?

The plan is the proposed Graham-Cassidy Bill, which much like GOP proposed bills before this one has the opportunity to signiďŹ cantly cut federal spending and leave close to 21 million Americans without healthcare coverage. Spearheaded by Sens. Lindsey Graham and Bill Cassidy, the proposed bill was pushed through with virtually no time to review, and with revisions made only in an effort to appease other Senate Republicans who oppose the bill. As it stands, the pair is hard-up to get the 50 votes it needs to pass the bill and for good reason. A potential $215 billion federal cut and placing the power back into the hands of individual states has made not just ACA recipients raise eyebrows, but providers as well. “The ACA’s role when it went into effect was to transfer a lot of that regulatory authority back to the federal government which nationally then would set the benchmarks of

6(37(0%(5 2&72%(5

how insurance would work,â€? said Scott Post, vice president of public policy for Independence Blue Cross, the region’s largest healthcare provider. “In essence what Graham-Cassidy is trying to do is take that federal funding that was allocated for the ACA and let’s just push that back to the state to determine products, rates, how the markets would work and things like that without a lot of speciďŹ city and quite frankly without a lot of time.â€? But some feel that this pushback from IBX is refreshing considering aside from its involvement in the ACA, it has – and admittedly after speaking to Post – has raised rates signiďŹ cantly in an already expensive marketplace. As it pertains to a bill that would replace the ACA, however IBX notes that the importance of “sustained federal fundingâ€? is vital, despite there being issues with the current plan. There are also some calling for IBX CEO

Dan Hilferty to explain himself and a change in tune after it appeared he initially sided with proposed GOP bills that mirrored much of the carnage that would come from the passing of Graham-Cassidy. In February, Hilferty was one of 10 industry CEOs that met with the President. White House transcription shows that Hilferty, was one of many who thanked Trump for his immediacy in allowing federal agencies to chip away at the ACA, Trump’s ďŹ rst ofďŹ cial act in ofďŹ ce. “Why would you as an insurance provider want to strip millions of people from their care?â€? asked Antoinette Kraus, director of the Pennsylvania Health Access Network, a statewide advocacy agency based in Philadelphia committed to the education of health policy issues. During an interview earlier this year with PW, Kraus claimed Hilferty and IBX released a statement in support of the Trump administration’s destabilizing of the ACA. Additionally, Kraus claims it has been the questionable business practices from IBX, that led to a protest outside the company’s Market St. headquarters in addition to imparting the Pennsylvania Insurance Commission, the state regulator of insurance premiums, et al to hold a series of statewide town hall meetings. “We’ve just had a number of members who had a hard time dealing with the company, have gotten the runaround, been charged unfairly, or haven’t had cases resolved,â€? said Kraus. “We just wanted the PIC to listen to those stories and hold IBX accountable for those business practices.â€? Kraus continued: There needs to be more transparency. One of the principles [we’re asking IBX] to have is more transparency and I think that if you look at IBX’s footprint in this region, you’ll see that they are deeply embedded in the power structure. They are a funder of media outlets...where they’ll have shared spots reporting on healthcare and the spot is underwritten by [IBX]. They are on buses and bikes throughout the city. Dan Hilferty was on the post committee for the Democratic National Election...I think this prevents them from getting a lot of negative attention because they are so involved and connected into the power structure [of media and advertising]. So it’s important to ask for transparency in a time like this.â€? But to IBX’s credit, the company has offered education in the form of a webpage called “Getting Healthcare Right,â€? which offers a “Key Issuesâ€? tab breaking down everything from the week in health care reform to explaining what is a pre-existing condition. It’s this, the company hails as its way to keep consumers up to date on all of its movements in a turbulent healthcare landscape. Additionally, Hilferty has been ever-present in the media pushing for a bipartisan solution to reform. In a recent interview with NPR.org, Hilferty noted that while he thinks

health care is “best delivered at the state and local level in collaboration with the federal government, that IBX’s primary goal regardless of what happens will continue to be as an industry leader given the combination of both the ACA and Medicare accounts for roughly 10 percent of total business. “More than half of the people in the United States get their insurance from employer-

“We raised rates signiďŹ cantly at the same time when we saw our competitors like Aetna and Unitedhealthcare drop out completely. Our markets are affected really in the same way that most other markets competing in the individual markets have been under the ACA.â€? Upon hearing that, Richter said it provided some comfort that leading healthcare provid-

based markets, so they’re not really under the same pressures the individual market is under today,â€? said Post. “There are a lot of people who get their coverage from Medicare which is not really impacted at all by the ACA, you’re really talking about the individual marketplace...we raised rates this year going into last year quite a bit because we were experiencing what all other insurers were experiencing with regarding to the composition of the risk pool.â€? IBX did take hit with the full implementation of the ACA in 2015, citing a $54 million loss and having to shell out $236 million in ACA related taxes and fees in 2016, according to the company’s latest annual report. However, IBX prides itself on despite having to signiďŹ cantly increase premiums, it’s remained steadfast in remaining the provider for over 300,000 recipients across Pennsylvania and South Jersey.

ers were feeling the same pain everyday recipients like her feel. As a child care worker working primarily as an independent contractor, Richter says there is an unsettling uncertainty of what’s going to happen. Refreshing to know, that it could be much of the same for big business. “Maybe they’ll ďŹ ght more for us little people since it affects their bottom line too,â€? she said. “At the end of the day, I don’t have Blue Cross, but I know they are a big company. They need to be the one’s ďŹ ghting alongside us. They need to be out here too in the sun showing us who choose them and pay them that they support us. Philadelphia singer Sevyn Streeter was the life of a weeklong party in Philly last week for the annual Fashion Week festivities.

Phasionable Philadelphia City of Brotherly Love certainly carved out a sizable piece of the national craze that is Fashion Week. Here’s how she did it BY ANDREA CANTOR

L

ast week was the time to leave the sweats at home, and pull out the chic looks for Philadelphia Fashion Week. Philly fashion lovers had a whole lineup of glam events to show off their styles and see innovative and new collections on the runway. “I think this season was deďŹ nitely a game changer. It opened up a lot of people’s eyes,â€? said Kerry Scott, co-founder and CEO of PFW. “It has deďŹ nitely made an impact, a great impact, in showcasing the hidden talent that is here.â€? The week started with Monday, Sept. 18’s kickoff to the fashion extravaganza with the Style Gala at Dilworth Park. Current and past residents of Macy’s Philadelphia Fashion Incubator, a non-proďŹ t that helps local designers cultivate small businesses, presented their collections to go down the runway.

“[PFI] is a program that teaches you the business side of fashion,â€? said Jovan O’Connor, a 2014 resident of the program. “A lot of us already went to school and had our businesses started, but we needed a little bit more expertise on the lines of production, sales, and marketing.â€? O’Connor showcased her “La Bella Donnaâ€? collection, which was inspired by Italian masonry that featured intricate hand stitching, structure, and beading. Several Philadelphia natives who took part in the gala included a charitable aspect to their work. While some of the designers had portions of their sales being donated to local organizations, ďŹ rst-year PFI resident Rachel Mednick recently launched the Lucy & Leo Project. The mission behind the project is for children to create totes and stuffed animals out of scrap material to donate to other children in homeless shelters. A ďŹ tting mission, considering Mednick’s Lucy & Leo designs is organic

baby clothing made here in the United States. “’The Wizard of Oz is one of my absolute favorite movies growing up, and I am also inspired by a lot of vintage. So I actually based this collection on vintage Wizard of Oz books,â€? said Mednick during the style gala, her ďŹ rst runway showing. “I just thought the illustrations were really fun and I think it is something kids can relate to, because it is really friendly. If you read the books, there is some really interesting messaging that is very applicable to today’s world and what’s going on.â€? The current six PFI residents also showcased their works on Sept. 21 at Macy’s Center City Fashion Show. The event previewed Macy’s fall collections in their “Get Readyâ€? themed runway, which included “Western Vibrations,â€? “Modern Muse,â€? and “More is More.â€? Celebrity stylist and television personality Carson Kressley hosted the fashion show, which included a music performance by singer

Sevyn Streeter. Throughout the week there were other events, including the Made Institute’s Launch Party & Fashion Show on Sept. 20 and a Kid’s Runway Show on Sept. 23. But the main events were Friday and Saturday night, where a contingent of more than 20 designers, many local, displayed their collections at Dilworth Park. Several of the collections were unique and off the mainstream path of fashion. Steel Pony designer Joanne Litz described her collection as “wedding alternative.â€? “It’s the kind of collection you buy, not just to get married in,â€? said Litz, whose store is nestled in the heart of South Philadelphia’s Fabric Row. “Just throw on jeans with one of those handmade jackets and you are good to go.... It’s not just for weddings, but the vibe is very wedding.â€? Litz works with the city chapter of Fashion Group International to bring manufacturing back to Philly. What was refreshing for the whole week was the diversity in model body types. The fashion shows incorporated thin-framed, average-build, and plus-size models within single collections. Most rare to see was the medium body types work the runway. “This season we said ‘you know what, we need to highlight all body types, all shapes and sizes.’ That’s what we did,â€? said Scott of PFI’s 12th year. “We sought out designers who cater to every size, because we realized in the fashion industry, we can show you a sample size 2, but at the end of the day we want to give you what the average person is wearing, what the average person would look like.â€? In what is usually a stuffy affair for swanky types, Philly’s Fashion installment resembled more of a party, given the level of noise from the audience in various events. “We encourage it! We encourage it, because this is a fun time. A fashion show is supposed to be fun, it is supposed to be full of life,â€? explained Scott. “Fashion is life. Fashion is colorful. Fashion is noise. Why not be the person to sit and cheer and enjoy yourself? It’s about an experience we try to create here.â€? Scott explained that his and co-founder Kevin Parker’s mentor is Fern Mallis, the creator of New York Fashion Week, which occurred a week before PFW. “New York is the mother of fashion weeks. But you know it has died a little bit, but it is still the mother,â€? said Scott. “What I think Philadelphia has to offer is that we have such a stylish city. We are such a music city, a stylish city. Great people come out of Philadelphia so why not showcase it here, in our own hometown?â€? Like a great but unďŹ tted dress, PFW will need some tailoring to compete with the top fashion weeks. But for what it is, unlike the often stiff and exclusive events of notable fashion shows, PFW is an accessible opportunity for audiences to relate more with what they wear and, ultimately, have fun with fashion. MUSIC

Spearheaded by frontman Lamont Caldwell, rock-soul group MACH22 is a certainly a twist on the genre norm.

The speed of soul Mach22 moving up the musical ranks with a great collision of rock, metal and soul BY A.D. AMOROSI

A

powerful saxophonist and with a baritone to boot, Lamont Caldwell is something of an enigma. It’s wizardry that has found the Camdenborn Caldwell on albums by Bilal, touring with Jay-Z and Kirk Franklin and mingling with other neo-soul circles – but using chattering Led-Zeppelin-like rock with his zealous band MACH22 to stake his reputation as an instrumentalist. Caldwell, who is African-American, called it “a gamble going against the grain. But it’s one that has paid immense dividends both for him and his MACH22 collective.

You’re either admired or hated. Luckily, though, I’ve been embraced, said Caldwell. “So many people have said to me, ‘Dude, I hope this isn’t wrong to say, but I’ve never heard a black dude sing like that. You rock!’ Kind of gives me hope for humanity. I didn’t think I had the voice for R&B, especially with artists like Bilal, who do justice to that style of music. Besides, big rock’s energy has been with me since childhood, starting with KISS. Now, after opening shows for Motley Crue, Bon Jovi and Guns N’ Roses and dropping hard, strutting albums and EPs like 2015’s Like My Chances and 2014’s Sweet Talk Intervention, MACH22 is readying its next EP and album, as well as opening for and back-

ing up Cinderella’s Tom Keifer on Oct. 13 at Harrah’s Philadelphia. This gig is a family affair as MACH22’s lead guitarist guitarist Sebastian Labar is the son of Cinderella’s axe king Jeff Labar. “In terms of our Cinderella connection, it’s an honor to have Sebastian’s association, and with Philly’s hometown heroes too,â€? said Caldwell. Glam metal’s platinum plated past and familial connections aside, MACH22 has its own path to blaze, one with its own precious metal sound in town. “This band allows me to be myself,â€? Caldwell continued. “I can be at the helm, but I can also voice my story which is ďŹ lled with success, failure, doubt, heartache and victory all at the same time.â€?

Though Caldwell welcomed the experience of playing Japan, Europe and England with Bilal and The Roots and could’ve easily remained under the umbrella of R&B and rap, the singer was writing something far harder, louder and guitar-strewn. “MACH22 started because I wanted to play music live that I was shopping to other artists,â€? said Caldwell. “I was a songwriter and had great singers to demo my tracks. My early writings were more R&B due to my connections, but I was also writing rock songs in the hope of getting my music to Lenny Kravitz.â€? The Kravitz connection never panned out, and Caldwell won’t spill the beans on who originally sung his demo tracks, but he did drop the dime on a conversation with Kravitz. “You have a good voice, why don’t you sing it instead,â€? Caldwell recalled. “So I ďŹ nally did, and from there, there was no turning back. I always had this desire to sing, but I never really felt that I had a contemporary R&B voice.â€? Going back to his youth as a KISS/Led Zeppelin acolyte, singing rock felt like a more free sensation for Caldwell. What he had to offer that world was a voice and a passion to deliver a message. What he needed was a bunch of hard swaggering guys with guts in a band to believe in him. “I needed to trust people as musicians. I needed to ally myself with great musicians and have a solid band,â€? he says of the pairing to create MACH22. Enter Sebastian Labar, along with bassist Jaron Gulino, drummer Damian Montecarlo and second guitarist Ric Haas – guys Caldwell could feel close to in different ways: “Damian because we share a similar upbringing; Baz [Lebar] because we’re both gearheads, and love wrenching on cars, trucks and motorcycles; Jaron because we share a passion for world domination; Ric because I see myself in him when I was his age in terms of his desire to want to improve his skill level.â€? Corny as it sounds, as soon as MACH22 got together as a unit and recorded its ďŹ rst album, they sounded seasoned, rich, swaggering, rocking and for all his talk to the contrary, deeply soulful. Produced by Jeff Labar and recorded at Dragon Sound Studios in Nashville, Caldwell still thinks of this as his favorite group effort to date. “We wrote and practiced for weeks then went away. It helped to get out of town, kept us on track to be in another city away from our day to day lives and the usual inuences,â€? he said. Since those early releases, shows of larger and larger scale the likes of Guns N’ Roses were a proving ground that MACH22 can actually do this on a high level. “Playing in front of such huge crowds and winning them over is a task,â€? said Caldwell. “Anyone can play on those stages, but actually reaching the crowds to where they walk away with a piece of what you do and like it... now that’s show business.â€?Q TWITTER: @ADAMOROSI

The reviews are in and Asya Zlatina’s performance in ‘Storm’ has the highlight of this year’s Fringe Festival.

A Typhoon of Emotion Asya Zlatina’s second dance performance ‘Storm’blows audiences away BY ANDREA CANTOR

D

raconian immigration reform and the recent termination of the Deferred Action for Children Arrivals have created a whirlwind of opinions and panic. Similar to the many immigrants who come to the States, one woman who ed Russia from religious persecution at the age of 5, found her American Dream through dance. Asya Zlatina’s “Storm,â€? while not inspired by the current political regime, certainly captures the extreme emotional states of the American people. The 45-minute show debuted at the Fringe Festival on Sept. 14 and had two following performances on Sept. 17 at the Performance Garage. In all, as its name suggests, the show had a typhoon of emotion. “‘Storm’ is a showcase of the things that people have in them that are beautiful and ugly at the same time,â€? said Zlatina, the show’s creator and principal dancer. “People have a whole range of emotion within them. Very rarely do they show that whole range as adults, I feel. I wish that people were more in tune with their emotions.â€?

The modern dance piece is set to the music of English composer Gustav Holst’s “The Planets,â€? which reaches its centennial this time next year. Just as the music suite, the dance contains seven acts to represent the different planets, sans Earth. Going even deeper, each planet assumes an emotion, such as anger with “Mars, The Bringer of Warâ€? and joy with “Jupiter, The Bringer of Jolly.â€? Before picking a song, Zlatina began assembling the movements as cathartic relief for a fellow dancer who was going through a tough period of her life. In direct contrast, during last year’s Fringe Festival, Zlatina put on the show “Barry,â€? which was in dedication to her deceased grandmother, and the Yiddish songs she sang to the dancer as a child. “The ďŹ rst show, everything was based around the music. The music inspired everything. I heard the music, I saw the vision, and that was it,â€? explained Zlatina, who is touring with “Barry,â€? and is scheduled for April to perform the piece in D.C. “This was completely the opposite. This time we started with no music, we just started doing the movement, and I am not used to working like that. I just had to say, ‘what is the integrity of pain. How

6(37(0%(5 2&72%(5

can we showcase this and ďŹ nd relief for her at the same time?’â€? But then the stars aligned when Zlatina happened to listen to the radio one day and heard the Saturn section of Holt’s “The Planets.â€? Proving to be even more cosmologically destined, Zlatina purposefully constructed the dance without doing much research of the suite — only to ďŹ nd out that, for the most part, she hit the nail on the head with Holt’s intentions. “I was shocked, I was absolutely stunned by how close my feelings were, and my interpretations of each section were to what he had put in it. I think that speaks to his incredible genius of being able to transfer onto other people exactly what he is trying to say,â€? Zlatina afďŹ rmed. Standouts of the seven-section performance were Greg Anmuth, whose melliuous dancing was a staple in several sections, and Sophie Malin, whose character in “The Bringer of Jollyâ€? was absolutely infectious. But the showstopper was undoubtedly the portion that started it all – Saturn. In the solo that is subtitled “The Bringer of Old Age,â€? Zlatina agitatedly spins and throws herself around, all while holding a knife — don’t worry, it’s a butter knife. Zlatina elevates the prop to become

a force of its own, representing death staring her in the face. “It is just that frantic craziness of that character. You don’t know if she is turning [the knife] on you, you don’t know if she is turning it on herself, you don’t know if she is going to use it at all,â€? said Zlatina, who actually lost the small knife the ďŹ rst time she performed the solo in front of a crowd, but pulled it off without a hitch during her festival performance. “But I knew there had to be some object that would keep you really anxious, ‘what is this person going to do? Somebody stop her, she is going to hurt someone, or herself.’â€? Zlatina explained that she was able to tap into the character of the aging woman, because while she is only 30 years old, in dancer years, she is nearing the end of her career. “I think, especially within this dance profession, it is such a limited amount of years ‌ I ended up graduating early from high school and getting out really early from college, because as a dancer, you are always thinking about how limited your time is,â€? said Zlatina. “In Russia they make you retire when you are 40. Saying you’re 30, it may not be the oldest age, and by no means do I think I’m old, but it is that nearing of a certain age where you are going to be cut off.â€? But getting up there in age is not the only challenge the dancer has faced — she is also a Modern Orthodox Jew. As a former dancer with Philadelphia’s Koresh Dance Company for eight years, Zlatina explained how difďŹ cult it was to keep kosher and Sabbath while on tour. “Always, since I was little, I tried to seek a way to merge [Judaism and dance]. It was always sad to me that I didn’t know how,â€? said Zlatina who scheduled her show purposely on Thursday and Sunday so she could keep the Sabbath. “For example, I can’t invite my Rabbis to come see me dance. Sometimes the people I want the most at my shows, they don’t even know I’m doing the shows.â€? For those who could attend, the solos, duets and group numbers brought layer after layer of visceral emotion: innocent to sexual, anger to sadness, giddiness to nervousness. While a simple background of colors clued viewers into what emotion was being portrayed, that was about all the help the audience received from the piece without a straight narrative or story arc. Beautiful movements followed intentionally ugly, improvisational scenes were linked with calculated and precisely rehearsed steps, and sounds, like stomping, were employed to capture the different “texturesâ€? of life. In that, the show challenges audiences to just take in what is being presented — an emotion in movement. Finished at this year’s Fringe Festival, Zlatina hopes to tour with the show in the future. That would be a most welcomed prospect, because this “Stormâ€? is not ready to pass. Q TWITTER: @ANDREACANTOR9

Shows like Strange Tenants shot in an Old City basement was one of Fringe’s best performances.

weightlifting workout; clothes ying from the catwalks; a hair-raising dance solo that makes use of dangerous power tool. The cast of impressive and versatile dancers will be familiar to those who’ve been to other Montana shows, as will be the cameo of the Pope character from his 2015 Fringe hit “Purgatory.â€? And the dancing crosses uidly between genres. It’s tender, at times violent, and always, yes, kinky. By the end of the hourlong show, the set itself becomes something of its own character, constantly transforming to an eclectic soundtrack that goes beyond your predictable EDM fare. The show’s loose narrative succeeds in exploring the playfulness and joy and freedom of kink, while also providing commentary on identity issues that come with the territory. But the show’s numerous themes – from drug abuse and self image in the gay community to loneliness and longing for deeper human connection – begin to pile up, and as a result the show starts to buckle under its own weight. The ending felt uncharacteristically abrupt, but “KINK HAĂœSâ€? generates more than enough energy to compensate for its diffuseness.

Earth, comes in the form of an all-ages show starring a father and son. (Phillips told PW that his son served as a creative counsel for much of the script.) What begins as a father’s effort to coax his young boy to bed transforms into an interstellar quest to retrieve a lost toy. As they traverse through various epochs, a crew of talented stagehands helps transform the ambitiously minimalistic set, with a roiling sea, a starry night sky, a frozen tundra, and more. The low-tech atmosphere was charming at moments, as when the actors climb through a life-sized refrigerator and emerge in a world of super-sized milk cartons. Some of the other effects, however, were hackneyed even by children’s standards. At a family-friendly Sunday matinee, “A Billion Nights on Earth began as a laughable success with parents and kids alike, but lost its steam about 20 minutes into the performance, when the dialogue abruptly disappears and the show relies too heavily on its visual gimmicks to sustain the audience.

FLASH FRINGE:

A retrospective The best and the worst of Philly’s latest experimental theater festival BY MAX MARIN

I

t was physically impossible to see every Fringe show this year. But...

STRANGE TENANTS “Strange Tenantsâ€? is the type of serious, daring theater that makes us lift our hands and give thanks for the Fringe – because who knows how often something like would ďŹ nd the public otherwise? In a darkly imagined Old City basement, the story begins with four distant women who reunite in a house from their past under eerie circumstances. Director Sam Tower and playwright Jeremy Gable will hardly take full credit for the unnerving script. As Towers told me before the show on its closing night, the show was an experiment in collaborative playwriting.

There were strong echoes of Hitchcock, Marsha Norman and Harold Pinter at his darkest hour. And if Fringe had awards for most clever set design – a life-sized corn ďŹ eld on stage! – “Strange Tenantsâ€? would have taken home the prize. Keep an eye out for anything by Sam Tower + Ensemble hitting the stage in Philly down the line.

KINK HAĂœS Gunnar Montana, a Fringe staple of the last ďŹ ve years, has earned a reputation for high-production value shows. For his latest choreographed world, “KINK HAĂœS,â€? he reportedly spent the bulk of an $11,000 crowdfunding campaign to transform the Latvian Society at 7th and Spring Garden streets into a garish underground nightclub, and the grafďŹ ti-and-grit set design does not disappoint. “KINK HAĂœSâ€? is a relentless visual rollercoaster from start to ďŹ nish, regardless of your interest in the queerer side of life. Without giving away all of the visual surprises, three notable favorites include: a dildo

The Fishtown of the latest Tribe of Fools’ production has little in common with its neighborhood namesake – but the jokes are delightful nonetheless. We’re talking about “new Fishtown, after all. It’s a place of “startups and letdowns, according to the play’s protagonist, a luddite private eye. But beyond the jabs at La Colombe, “Fishtown has something for its old-timers, too. The ambitious yet familiar plot offers a cautionary tale about technology – with a timely emphasis on what we sign away under “terms and conditions. Beyond its delightfully surprising set design and reserved nods to the noir genre, the show’s dance scenes were some of the most inventive and playful that Fringe had to offer this year. We declare it a hands-down success for Tribe of Fools.

A BILLION NIGHTS ON EARTH Protean director/actor/playwright Thaddeus Phillips has been premiering new work at Philly Fringe since its inception in the mid1990s. His latest work, “A Billion Nights on

It would be difďŹ cult, I suspect, even for the non-enthusiast, to have sat through the 50-minute performance of “A Love Supremeâ€? and not felt some of its magic. There is little wonder why this particular dance has been touring since 2005: it is quite simply a stunning experience. Salva Sanchis and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker brought their moving interpretation of John Coltrane’s 1965 masterpiece from Europe to Philly Fringe’s curated stage this year. The piece involves four male dancers and the four-part suite of the jazz legend’s opus, and as De Keersmaker told PW in a preview to the performance, the movement is as improvisatory as Coltrane’s sax. “Improvisation is organized freedom, an outburst of individual musicians supported by their ensemble,â€? De Keersmaker said. “We translated this idea into choreography, interweaving composition and improvisation into a seamless whole.â€? Q TWITTER: @MAXMMARIN

Philly Music Hall LLC co-founder Deborah Rose Hinchey answers questions from residents during a March 23 community meeting at the historic Tacony Music Hall building.

No sex for you

Tacony residents win out in effort to prevent private sex club in neighborhood BY WILLIAM KENNY

P

hiladelphia’s Zoning Board of Adjustment has revoked a self-described “sexpositiveâ€? organization’s permit to operate a private sex-oriented club at a historic former music hall in Tacony. The six-member board voted unanimously on Sept. 13 in favor of the Tacony Civic Association’s appeal of the fraternal organization permit previously granted to Philly Music Hall LLC by the city’s Department of Licenses and Inspection on April 3. The permit applied to the 4815 Longshore Ave. building, commonly known as the Tacony Music Hall. The civic association successfully argued through a private attorney that the Philly Music Hall group did not qualify as a “fraternal organizationâ€? under the zoning code’s deďŹ nition of the term. The civic group further argued L&I improperly awarded the permit to the club for what amounts to a regulated adultoriented use. “We appealed their over-the-counter permit to act as a fraternal organization like the Sons of Italy,â€? Tacony Civic zoning chairman Sam Schepis said. “We told the zoning board [that Philly Music Hall] didn’t tell L&I everything.â€? “Right now, they do not have a permit to do anything in that building,â€? said Connie Schepis, who is Sam’s wife and a Tacony civic board member.

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

Deborah Rose Hinchey, a Philly Music Hall spokeswoman, said her organization will appeal the zoning board’s decision. “The Philly Music Hall is going to immediately appeal. We’re in conversations with L&I to make sure we fully adhere to the zoning code,â€? Hinchey said. The city Law Department, which argued in support of the permit on behalf of L&I, declined to comment on the case. An attorney for the civic association, Matthew N. McClure of Ballard Spahr, said he wished to withhold comment on the case due to the possible appeal. Philly Music Hall obtained its fraternal organization use permit on April 6, but use of the Longshore Avenue property has been a public issue since Jan. 30, when Philly Music Hall applied to operate a nightclub or private club there. Opened in 1885, the three-story red brick building originally served as an entertainment venue, library and community center for the company town created by Henry Disston around his world-renowned saw works. By 1965, it was being used as a furniture warehouse. In 1989, a local couple bought the building and established a real estate business there. The building later housed the Tacony Historical Society ofďŹ ce and archives. In 1995, the zoning board permitted a daycare center that still operates on the ground oor. After the property’s sale last year, Philly Music Hall

agreed to lease the second and third oors and sought to establish what it described as a “sex-positive communityâ€? there. After L&I denied the night club/private club application in January, Philly Music Hall appealed to the zoning board. As part of the zoning appeal process, Philly Music Hall was required to present its plans at a public meeting. More than 100 people attended the March 23 session at the music hall. During the meeting, Hinchey said her group wanted to establish a “safe, membersonly space for the alternative sexual communities of Philadelphia.â€? Previously, Hinchey said the proposed center would serve “those who are marginalized for their sexual identities,â€? such as the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or transsexual communities as well as those who identify as queer, intersex or asexual and those who practice non-traditional relationship styles. Collectively, Hinchey referred to those categorizations as the alt-sex community. Hinchey further said at the March 23 meeting sexual activity would not be encouraged on-site, but it would not be prohibited. She said that club employees or members would not be compensated for sex demonstrations or performances. Alcohol and drugs would be prohibited from the property, Hinchey said. Neighbors voted 81-18 that night to oppose the club’s zoning application. Rather than ďŹ ght the neighbors at an ensuing zoning board meeting, Philly Music Hall withdrew its nightclub/private club application and ďŹ led a new application as a fraternal organization. L&I granted the permit on April 6 allowing the club to operate privately. Four days later, the civic association appealed the permit. City Councilman Bobby Henon, state Sen. John Sabatina and state Rep. Mike Driscoll each co-signed the civic association’s April 10 letter to the zoning board seeking a new hearing. The city’s zoning code deďŹ nes “fraternal organizationâ€? as, “The use of a building or lot by a not-for-proďŹ t organization that restricts access to its facility to bona ďŹ de, annual duespaying members and their occasional guests. Banquet rooms and the preparation and serving of food and beverages and occasional live entertainment are uses and activities in association with fraternal organizations.â€? Meanwhile, the zoning code deďŹ nes “adultoriented servicesâ€? as a regulated use, including adult cabarets, modeling or photography, movie theaters, spas or health clubs and massage shops. Sales of adult-oriented merchandise such as printed materials, videos and sex toys are also regulated by the code. Hinchey has said that Philly Music Hall would conduct social and educational events involving sexual and non-sexual topics. Members pay dues. The organization ďŹ led for nonproďŹ t status last spring. Q

SAVAGE LOVE:

At the Palace DAN SAVAGE I had a blast hosting Savage Lovecast Live at San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts. Audience members submitted questions before the show, and I consumed a large pot edible right after the curtain went up and then raced to give as much decent sex advice as I could before it took effect. Here are some of the questions I didn’t get to before my judgment became too impaired to operate a sex-andrelationship-advice podcast.

constantly and gets passive-aggressively mad whenever she tries to hang out with people besides him. When she complains about him, I want to say fuck him, he’s a dick, except‌ she’s having a full-on affair with another guy and seems not to feel bad about it! I don’t know what advice to give or how to make sense of the situation. What’s my responsibility to her? To her boyfriend? Maybe your best friend’s boyfriend is jealous and controlling because he senses—or because he knows—his girlfriend is cheating on him. Or maybe it didn’t occur to your best friend to cheat on her boyfriend until after he accused her of cheating for the millionth time—maybe she ďŹ gured she might as well commit the crime since she was already being punished for it. Or maybe they’re both terrible people who deserve each other and neither is your responsibility.

My partner and I are a straight couple in our 20s/30s. We’re curious about straight PDA in gay bars. She feels it should be kept to a minimum, but a little is okay.
