So long, Summer â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;18 KERITH GABRIEL

T

his issue marks the ďŹ nal one of the summer for us.

By the time this hits stands, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be mere days away from the ďŹ rst day of Fall; headed into cooler temperatures and nonstop talk about all things pumpkin spiced.

Personally, I usually get a little depressed around this time as I am one of the few people I know who doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get absolutely giddy over sweater weather, falling leaves and Oktoberfests.

Fall reminds me that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m heading into an abysmal onslaught of allergies and popping Claritin like breath mints just to cope, having to get a ďŹ&#x201A;u shot and inevitably getting the ďŹ&#x201A;u anyway (happens almost every year) and frigid temperatures for the foreseeable future.

I know, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m Scrooge with this, you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to tell me.

I will say, what aids in getting through all the months I ďŹ nd dreadful and bleak are the number of things upcoming in Philadelphia over the course of the next few months that are at the ready to check out. Many of these events you can once again discover over the pages that make up our annual Fall Guide, highlighting some the best in music, books, food, festivals and other events set to arrive by the time the chill comes.

This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s picks arrived from careful consideration from both myself and our crew of both in-house staff and contributors about what theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re most eager to do this Fall. For me, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m all about checking out more of Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s food scene and seeing

what places I can ball out on a budget and bring a sometimes moody toddler along for the ride without getting dirty looks. I also had a conversation with comic and Chicago native Sebastian Maniscalco about Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ridiculous comic scene. Maniscalcoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s brand of comedy has roots in Philly, and prior to his near sold-out show earlier this month, he had lots to say on the subject.

Fellow writer-editor Andrea Cantor takes a look at the slew of upcoming festivals you have to check out, sits down with Philly author Irene Levy Baker, whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s back with a book on city eateries that plays right into the same theme of her ďŹ rst book, 1000 Things to do in Philadelphia before you Die. Cantor also takes a look at the impact that geeky Chestnut Hill event formerly known as the Harry Potter Festival still hopes to have under a forced rebrand after Warner Bros. called organizers out. Quickly, can I just note how lame you have to be as a major production studio to send a cease and desist letter to a civic association for an event that not only affects not just revenue and tourism, but also boosts interests in literacy among city kids?

We got you covered on upcoming movies to check out, especially on those cold, inclement, crappy days that suggest staying in sweats but you just gotta get out of the house.

So despite your record heat waves and the smells throughout sections of the city those said waves would produce, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m going to miss you, Summer. The number of colleges and universities in Pennsylvania listed in the top 25 schools nationally for on-campus arrests for drugs and alcohol, according to a report from data website, dataforstories.com. Surprisingly, all of the schools are PA state schools, the closest being West Chester University, which ranked No. 4 overall with 25.7 arrests per 1,000 students. Shippensburg ranked No. 1 in the nation for kids getting locked up with 29.4 arrests per 1,000 students. However, taking a deeper dive into the criteria, the pattern was apparent. Many of these institutions are situated in small college-centric towns with an overactive police force. Only Penn State, a big school in a small college town â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and yes on the list at No. 5 with 20 arrests per 1,000 students â&#x20AC;&#x201C; bucked the trend.

The zip code with the second-highest number of millennial residents in the country, according to a recent survey from housing website Rent Cafe. According to the survey, only Chicagoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s West Loop has more millennial inhabitants, followed by Manhattanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Financial District. It was like Dumbledore died for the second time when the Chestnut Hill Business District announced it would no longer host the annual fest, following a cease-and-desist letter issued in June citing copyright infringement by Los Angeles-based production house and keeper of all things Harry Potter, Warner Bros.

But because one canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t put a cease-and-desist order on imagination, the CHBD has planned a reimagined version aimed to keep excitement at its customary fever pitch. Out of incantations and spells to remedy the situation, the festivalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name, look and feel will continue this year under the new guise of Witches & Wizards. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Witches & Wizards is a new event for Chestnut Hill that will, no doubt, develop its own traditions and enthusiastic following,â&#x20AC;? It was scenes like this under the moniker of the Harry Potter Festival, organizers of the event say made kids excited about literacy. The goal is to not have that lost under the new look Witches & Wizards Festival this year.

Dawson also noted the new event will be scaled back. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[It is] consciously smaller and more locally-focused â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this festival is really designed for the community. Without the street closures and logistical expenses of past years, Chestnut Hill can only accommodate about one-third of the 45,000 visitors that came in past years,â&#x20AC;?

Dawson explained.

But who are we kidding? Just like the He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, we all know the fest has at the very least become a generic off-brand of the former Harry Potter Festival. The two-day fest will still be featuring many of the regular events, including the Brews and Broomsticks Pub Crawl, sans the Potter theme, the Woodmere Art Museum Straw Maze and Little Circus and even the Chestnut

Hill College Brotherly Love Cup Quidditch Tournament.

The event is vital to commerce and tourism in Chestnut Hill and surrounding neighborhoods, but it also has become a Philly signature. But more importantly, the old version, based on author J.K. Rowlingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s book series, has been applauded for its ability to increase literacy rates and reading levels among various age groups.

In Philadelphia, approximately 60 percent of children, including those from the School District of Philadelphia, Archdiocese and Charter schools, are not reading on grade level by the time they enter third grade, according to Data and Administrative Coordinator Sam Fischer of the citywide Read by 4th campaign.

To understand the positive effects of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Harry Potterâ&#x20AC;? series on reading, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to remember the local festival was partly inspired by Chestnut Hill Collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual Harry Potter Academic Conference. Other than changing a lightning bolt image and font on materials, the separate seventh annual conference is

still scheduled to commence.

Chestnut Hill Collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Patrick Mccauley, associate professor of religious studies, and Karen Wendling, associate professor of chemistry, are the coordinators and creators of the nonproďŹ t conference. The duo came up with the idea, which showcases scholarly work based on the themes of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Harry Potter,â&#x20AC;? after creating a successful year-long science and religion honors course. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s difďŹ cult to teach a science-religion class without tipping to one side or the other.

We looked for something that could be in the middle of both of those things,â&#x20AC;? said Mccauley this summer, also admitting his kids cried when they found out their annual fest had been canceled. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We started to realize that some of the writing that came out of that seminar with those really excellent students was simply too good not to share with other people.â&#x20AC;?

While labeled a â&#x20AC;&#x153;young adultâ&#x20AC;? series, Wendling commented on the depth and universality of Rowlingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s books.

[People] read these books almost cyclically.

They keep coming back to them and reading them again,â&#x20AC;? said Wendling, a Hermione Granger fan. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think every time you read them, as you get older, as you mature, you start seeing things more in the text that you would have just missed as a child. [The deeper themes are] just waiting for you to be ready to understand.â&#x20AC;?

Back in June, Warner Bros. released a public statement about the closing of local Harry Potter festivals: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Warner Bros. is always pleased to learn of the enthusiasm of Harry Potter fans, but we are concerned, and do object, when fan gatherings become a vehicle for unauthorized commercial activity.â&#x20AC;?

Warner Bros did not reply when asked for further comment.

While the annual pay-as-you-go fest may have been â&#x20AC;&#x153;unauthorized commercial activity,â&#x20AC;? what other alternatives do many locals have?

Flying to Universal Studios in Florida or Hollywood to experience the Harry Potter amusement parks? According to Pew Charitable Trusts 2018 â&#x20AC;&#x153;State of the Cityâ&#x20AC;? report, Philadelphia is still one of the 10 poorest cities, with a poverty rate at about 26 percent. So booking a ďŹ&#x201A;ight might be out of the picture for many Philly residents.

Warner Bros. could have partnered with local communities using the Harry Potter moniker and look, gaining some good PR at the very least. Instead, the multinational organization closed the book on the small towns and the children and adults who struggle to read.

The ofďŹ cial end of the Harry Potter Festival is a bitter loss on how popular literature can impact urban space. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re obviously happy to have you, but why is Philadelphia such an important stop on your tours?

Philadelphia has always been a great market for me, I started out about 8-9 years ago at Helium and they really had a great response to what I was talking about, lot of the material is centered around my own family and people in this area can really relate to those shared experiences. Year after year, more and more people came out shows and from Philly spawned into success in Atlantic City. But the thought was when we ever got back to Philly would be to host a show in an arena [like the Wells Fargo Center].

Why the Wells Fargo Center? Did you feel at home so to speak in South Philly?

ebastian Maniscalco will readily tell you that a key stop in his humble beginnings as one of Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s funniest comedians began in a â&#x20AC;&#x153;little comedy club called Helium.â&#x20AC;?

Perhaps thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why Maniscalco took a minute to reďŹ&#x201A;ect on the crowd of more than 18,000 that packed the Wells Fargo Center earlier this month, one stop in his Stay Hungry tour, a two-hour bit that had the mostly Italian-American crowd buckled over from relatable stories of childhood, relationships and other wacky life interactions.

To say â&#x20AC;&#x153;mostly Italian-American crowdâ&#x20AC;? is putting it mildly. Looking at the demographic on the night it felt like Maniscalco brought out every Italian-American in

Well, let me start by saying I never envisioned being able to do shows in an arena, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not actually what I set out to do, and personally I think comedy is enjoyed in a more intimate space, but it just so happens that to meet the demand, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve have to basically get an apartment in Philadelphia, and I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think the wife will let me do that, so playing in South Philly felt perfect and to have it inside such a place like the Wells Fargo Center will be a memorable experience. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll see the show and having the stage in the middle was really by design to give the arena show a more intimate feel for the crowd.

What do you like about playing shows in Philly?

First and foremost, I love the city. I grew up in Chicago, so that city feel is something I enjoy. Plus, Philly has a ton of great comedy clubs that pump out some really funny people. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a working class city where people are down to Earth, driven and grew up in the same environment. People here can relate to what Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m talking about and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s almost like we grew up on the same street, just in a different city. I came into town and wandered into a little jazz club and had an absolute blast. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just so much going on, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just the comedy, but all the stuff to do without really having to do any planning that makes Philly fun to see on the schedule. The second annual event will host four nights of local acts beginning Sept. 27-30. Famed Fishtown venue Johnny Brendaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s will open the festival with performances from Soul Glo and Pissed Jeans on Thursday, Sept. 27, before moving to Friday and Saturdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main event at the World Cafe Live (3025 Walnut St.).

The World Cafe Live performances will feature some of Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s musical heavyweights, such as the luscious sounds of Katie Crutch-

The festival, which aims to be more than a weekend of great tunes, also serves as a nonproďŹ t organization, aimed, according to its website, in the â&#x20AC;&#x153;support [of] local musicians, local music education programs and local independent music venues.â&#x20AC;? The festival donated approximately $15,000 to local music education programs in the aftermath of last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s launch.

Philly favorites Hardwork Movement are one part of what promises to be a bigger, better and more spread out Philly Music Fest, kicking off on Sept. 27-30. to see some of Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most revered acts, but also for discovering new ones. This year plans to pack much of the same in discovery with some notable up-andcomers.

One group is The Mysteries, steadily climbing their way up the local music ladder with their psychedelic surf garage rock (think The Ventures mixed with The Sonics). Then thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Secret American, which features former Cheers Elephant lead singer Derek Krzywicki and his heavenly yet melodic keyboarddriven rock. Also, The Whips have a song about riding the Broad Street Line â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which is all you need to know about their Philly roots.

This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s installment also features a number of bands you may not know but should. For instance, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the energetic Hardwork Movement, a hip hop group whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s played everywhere and anywhere throughout Philadelphia, from Spruce Street Harbor Park to opening for Bernie Sanders at his Temple University rally in 2016. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also Hurry, a local pop-rock band whose music is as enjoyable as their Instagram account (check out @hurryband for yourself). Finally, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ruby the Hatchet, a psychedelic doom metal band that came to Philly via New Jersey.

Not to be outdone, Milkboy, which rounds out the trio for Philly Music Fest, will feature all local jazz artists. ctober for movies is going to be insane.

However, rather than providing a long list of movies you probably wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get out to, here are the four movie releases in October weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re excited about, and a short list of late-fall ďŹ lms to consider.

So there is a Big 4, and all carry themes of addiction and the underbelly of fame. A Star Is Born puts a contemporary spin on a classic story, while Beautiful Boy tackles addiction head-on. First Man is Neil Armstrongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s overdue biopic, and Serenity explores the nature of the neo-noir, the trendiest genre of the decade.

All four are strong Oscar contenders with big names â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and budgets â&#x20AC;&#x201C; behind them.

The familiar plot arc is rife with contemporary twists and details. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still love at ďŹ rst sight for alcoholic rock star Jackson Maine but he meets Allie, a struggling young artist, at a drag show instead of a bar. The once-controversial age gap is barely noticed; the theme has more to do with connection than authenticity.

While prior versions dealt with the rise and fall of stars, this one is more interested in the relationship between them. Can the light of Allieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s love ďŹ ll the Hollywood-sized hole in Jackâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heart? Or will he bring her down in depression with him? Regardless, staying real in La La Land, A Star Is Born says, is not about being â&#x20AC;&#x153;authenticâ&#x20AC;? but seeing people for who they are and loving them for what we see.

A Star Is Born (October 5) For a star to be born, another must die.

Whether the 1937 original, Judy Garlandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1954 remake, or Barbra Streisandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1976 performance as Allie, each generation has its own A Star Is Born. Beautiful Boy (October 12) Perhaps itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unsurprising that, in our culture of excess, addiction is an epidemic. From fame and food to drugs and alcohol, almost all Americans know someone battling addiction, if they arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ďŹ ghting it themselves. Beautiful Boy starts with a desperate father (Steve Carell) looking for

â&#x20AC;&#x153;One small step for man, one giant step for mankind.â&#x20AC;?

Three things deďŹ ne the 20th century: The world wars, the Berlin Wall, and Neil Armstrongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s journey to become the ďŹ rst man on the moon. In Saving Private Ryan, the glory of war is punctured by the gritty, horriďŹ c reality that was the American campaign. In Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, the good versus evil spy stories shift to the nuance and confusion that was the Iron Curtain.

In First Man, Damien Chazelle (La La Land) shows space travel for what it really is â&#x20AC;&#x201C; terrifying, lonely, and industrial. Armstrongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (Ryan Gosling) triumph, his earthshattering achievement, didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t change human nature, much less his own. First Man: The Life of Neil A Armstrong, the primary source for the movie, shows, above everything else, the solidity of Armstrongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s character.

Facing challenges from Aldrin (Corey Stoll) to the atmosphere, Armstrong shunned stardom to keep what was left of his personal life intact. As a biopic, First Man is structured by this story. Armstrong, at his core, was an engineer, a pilot, a man of machines.

Gosling and Chazelle stay true to this, trading goldenhour glamor of rising stars in La La Land for physics. In doing so, they move the genre away from the sweeping interstellar tropes weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve grown used to (Interstellar, Gravity), and show, instead, the human experience of being in space. Walking on the moon doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t change who you are, even if it pushes the limits of possible.

Serenity (October 19) â&#x20AC;&#x153;Truth lies beneath the surface.â&#x20AC;?

Not much is known about Serenity, a tropical neo-noir starring Matthew McConaughey, a ďŹ sherman, and Anne Hathaway, his ex-wife. She washes ashore and asks for a favor, a small thing, really. To kill her new husband and feed him to the sharks.

The ďŹ shing line ticks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I got a feeling, today is the day.â&#x20AC;? Set in the Caribbean but ďŹ lmed in Mauritius, the ďŹ lmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premise is interesting. With a plethora of LA neonoirs (Gemini, Blade Runner: 2049), the change of scene is refreshing, the chemistry between McConaughey and Hathaway, undeniable (Interstellar). â&#x20AC;&#x153;Good to see you, John. Took so long to ďŹ nd you.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not called John anymore.â&#x20AC;?

The line ticks faster. Written and directed by Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things, Peaky Blinders), a master of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;underbelly,â&#x20AC;? Serenity starts as beautiful and relaxed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Everybody knows something I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t.â&#x20AC;? John (McConaughey) goes out to sea. â&#x20AC;&#x153;How do you explain that?â&#x20AC;?

The line spins out of control. A shark, a suicide, a body lying on the ďŹ&#x201A;oor. Knightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s experience, an all-star cast (Djimon Hounsou, Jason Clarke, Diane Lane support), mysteries within mysteries. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sometimes we do bad things for good reasons.â&#x20AC;?

Bad Times at El Royale (October 12) The guests at a tacky hotel on the Nevada border make trouble amongst themselves.

Dakota Johnson, who could have a massive fall, leads, with a great cast supporting (Jon Hamm, Jeff Bridges, Cynthia Erivo).

If Beale Street Could Talk (November 30) Barry Jenkins directs in his first movie since Moonlight.

Based on the book by James Baldwin, If Beale Street Could Talk is about a young man (Stephan James) in Harlem wrongfully accused of rape.

His wife (KiKi Layne) struggles to cope.

Bohemian Rhapsody (November 2) After drama with directors (Bryan Singer was recently fired) Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not as keen on Bohemian Rhapsody as I once was.

Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, however, is something I still look forward to seeing.

Creed II (November 21) The past two years have seen a lot of sequels (I would argue too many). What makes this one interesting is that the first Creed was really good. The contemporary Rocky vibe could pay off.

Mary Queen of Scots (December 7) Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie star as Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth in the geopolitical duel still in â&#x20AC;&#x153;United Kingdomâ&#x20AC;? consciousness today. The cousin-queens are often depicted as opposites â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the former wild, hot-blooded, young; the latter chilly, calculated, the old virgin. Q

Baker became a Philly local in 1991, after leaving a string of jobs in public relations around the nation for a position at the Convention Center Visitors Bureau.

After working for a decade at the Visitors Bureau, she broke off and created Spotlight Public Relations, a public relations ďŹ rm that specializes in food and hospitality. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I feel like I was meant to be in Philadelphia. The pace, the authentic realness of it,â&#x20AC;? said the Ohio-born foodie on why she planted roots in Philly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I moved to Philadelphia â&#x20AC;Ś as it was on the upswing, just as you're starting to have outside dining and just as George Perrier and Jean-Marie Lacroix were starting to spin off proteges and now, after all those years, those proteges are spinning off their own proteges.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve watched the restaurants grow and expand and become even better and better, so I could never leave Philadelphia.â&#x20AC;?

On an average day, the bonaďŹ de foodie will crave Turkish coffee tahini shake at Goldie, lamb chops at Palizzi Social Social Club and Budino dessert at Barbuzzo.

Knowing the food scene like the back of her plate, Baker explained the major complaint she hears is trouble securing reservations. For that, ďŹ&#x201A;ip to the prelude and read her â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ten Tips for Getting Reservations at Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Top Restaurants.â&#x20AC;?

Giving a tasting sample, Baker divulged a few of her 10 tips and tricks on putting a table on lock.

Her ďŹ rst rule of thumb is to go Open Table but know its limits. Popular places typically do not put up all of their reservations on the service site, since they pay for the referral.

So, in the case that Open Table is closed on reservations, Baker insisted, â&#x20AC;&#x153;don't give up.â&#x20AC;?

Next, the food writer said to give the place a call and see if, indeed, they kept some of the coveted reservations off Open Table.

If itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s two strikes, ask about a waiting list and/or walk-ins. Baker explained top eateries, like Israeli restaurant Zahav and vegan and vegetarian Vedge, leave a few tables open for walk-ins.

In a last ditch effort, make a reservation somewhere else, walk into your desired local 30-minutes before your other reservation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you get in, cancel your reservation â&#x20AC;Ś and if you don't, you have a backup plan,â&#x20AC;? said Baker.

Social media is also a go-to when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in a mealtime snag. Baker explained chefs and restaurants will occasionally post when there is a cancellation or an open spot. But even without a table, Baker always recommends eating at the bar. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It's fun to eat at the bar because you end up meeting the people sitting around you,â&#x20AC;? said Baker. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have not found a restaurant in Philadelphia that doesn't serve its full menu at the bar.â&#x20AC;?

Palate cleanse A new season means a host of new menu options on the horizon in many Philly eateries

f youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a devout foodie, fall is a great time to be in Philadelphia.

As the seasons change, so do the menu options of many top restaurants in the city, looking to infuse popular fall tastes into new, inspired dishes. But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s on the menu, but all the new concepts coming to the area this fall. At last count, there are anywhere between 12-13 new restaurants hitting Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s food scene before the year ends â&#x20AC;&#x201C; some expanding from ďŹ&#x201A;agship locations, but a majority are completely new in terms of concept, location and ambience.

For example, it seems Rittenhouse is the obvious next place to go for popular Fishtown-Kensington BYOB restaurants like Stock and Helm, as both are set to expand into the Rittenhouse neighborhood this fall.

Stock, which is known for its intimate setting on Girard in Fishtown

is set to bring much of that same casual vibe along with favorites like its spicy papaya salad and peanut noodles and that banh mi that rivals any youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll ďŹ nd in the city.

If itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new dishes you want, Honeygrow founder Justin Rosenberg has partnered with an NYC favorite to add some ďŹ&#x201A;air to his menu, with a noodle bowl ($14.50) that already sounds sexy by description alone.

Pairing with popular Gotham bagel shop Black Seed, the bowl will host Honeygrowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s egg noodles, smoked salmon, and organic baby spinach tossed in a three-herb pesto sauce.

Where Black Seed enters is in the ďŹ nal touches with everything bagel ďŹ&#x201A;avored croutons along with an everything bagel spice that will feature red onions, fried capers, watermelon radish and fresh dill. The bowl doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t drop throughout Honeygrow locations until October as itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still being perfected inside the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Front Street test kitchen.

Perhaps none more than Harperâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Garden, the new indoor/outdoor restaurant in Center City offering great food and an even better dining experience. A fan favorite in the entree category is surely the crab spaghetti ($19), which offers jumbo lump crab, over a harissa spice blend of noodle, squash and rounded off with garlic bread crumbs, oregano and basil.

This spot seats more outside than in (roughly 50 tables inside) making it an obvious choice if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking to sit outside for a nice meal under city lights.

Suraya, the popular Lebaneseinspired eatery on Frankford Avenue in Fishtown, is set to open its back patio for the fall season as well. An ambience that truly speaks for itself with ďŹ replaces, lounge seating and a garden, diners will now have that space of the restaurant as an option to enjoy some of the great options on Surayaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lunch and dinner menu.

' &'# What was the impetus for starting this magazine?

What made me want to start Daydreamers was rejection. When I graduated from college, I knew I wanted to be a magazine journalist; from day 1. So I applied to all of the top magazines I wanted to work for. I applied for writing positions, editing positions, you name it. Every single one of them said â&#x20AC;&#x153;no.â&#x20AC;? It was crazy because to me because I did everything they say youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re supposed to do to get in. I went to school for it, I did internships, I wrote for my college magazine and newspaper, so I just thought to myself â&#x20AC;&#x153;what kind of candidate are you looking for, because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clearly not me.â&#x20AC;?

A lot of people would press pause after so much rejection, what made you keep going?

How did the name Daydreamers come about?

Well, when I was working these jobs and applying to these magazines I was never really into what I was doing, and all day I felt like I was daydreaming. So I just researched what I needed to do to start a magazine and it really didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seem that difďŹ cult. The magazine came about from me daydreaming about it.

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the concept of Daydreamers? Who would want to read it?

I

f there was ever a picture to describe someone to ďŹ t the adage that thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only so much one person can take, that image would be of West Philly native Bria Williams.

Even before graduating from Penn State, Williams, 23, had dreams of working for a top magazine as an editor. The idea of collaborating, sharing ideas to put out a dynamic product weekly, monthly or quarterly was something she dreamed of. But that dream hit a wall as soon as rejection letter after rejection letter started hitting her inbox, citing inexperience, no need or just ďŹ&#x201A;at out thanks for applying.

But with each outlet sending her a reply stating they were going to pass her by, Williams began to daydream of how she could do it herself. It was rejection that fueled her ďŹ rst issue of her own fully gloss magazine called, Daydreamers, full of stories, pictures and illustrations created by people just like her â&#x20AC;&#x201C; just like all of us.

Life is a struggle, but instead of letting it detract her from a goal, Williams created an enterprise in

So I just needed to ďŹ nd a different way to do it, why canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t I start my own? Plus, at the time I was working this really crappy copywriting job for a tech startup making horrible money so I felt like with all this negativity, I needed to make a change, for myself.

Williams says her magazine is open to anyone that has a daydreaming mind. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a book for creatives who want to use her pages to make their imagination run free. hopes to get a little bit closer to it. Recently, in a conversation with PW, Williams talked Daydreamers, her goals for it, and why none of us should ever take â&#x20AC;&#x153;noâ&#x20AC;? for a ďŹ nal answer.

Daydreamers is a print and digital literary magazine and is a place for digital artists, photographers, writers and other visual artists to run wild on my pages. I wanted it to be for daydreaming minds, for the people who put time aside to daydream and think about what they want to do in life, what they want to be, the changes they want to make in themselves in the world around them. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know how many people are conscious of just how much they daydream over the course of a day, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m aware. So aware that I set aside time each day to daydream. I put my music in, look out a window and escape. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s for people like me, the creators, the weirdos, the lovers.

Where did you start the magazine?

I started it at home by myself, but collaborating is something Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always wanted to

do and when I dropped everything to work on my magazine full time is where I found a lot of people who wanted to collaborate, who saw my vision and was down for it.

My goal was to get a strong team established because doing it all is really hard. I have a photographer, but a lot of what it is now is submissions, and a lot of interns.

Last summer I had three Williams women serve as a social media manager, a stylist and a photographer and I think empowering them, empowered me as an editor. I proved to myself that I can manage a business and the work we produced collectively is something Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m very proud of.

Is there a level of empowerment in all of this too being a black woman? Your goal is to give daydreaming minds a space, how much of that is happening with a focus on giving women â&#x20AC;&#x201C; specifically black women a forum for their creativity?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a good question. I never really wanted it to be a black thing. Regardless of race, we all daydream, right? But I will say I do want this to be a space for women to show off their creativity. I deďŹ nitely want it to be a woman thing. Ideally, Daydreamers would be [comprised] of an all-woman team, sorry fellas. Daydreamers is for men, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m passionate about this being a space for women to come and share their ideas freely without any restrictions. Some women are not 100 percent themselves and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t let themselves shine in male-dominated situations. This is not that. [Laughs], In the future, when Daydreamers is poppinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and I have newsrooms around the world, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll allow men to join our teams.

What do you hope is the ultimate takeaway from this magazine? Knowing your story and stories of rejection, what do you hope each issue portrays to a magazine editor who just might pick this up?

I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know if I really see this as proving people wrong anymore. I deďŹ nitely had that mentality going into it, because I felt so much rejection, but now I look at it as giving back and having it be a place where someone can say â&#x20AC;&#x153;this was created for me.â&#x20AC;?

This is a place for people who like poetry, like art, knowing about things that expand their mind. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not that magazine promoting the newest fashion trends or what Kardashian did last week. We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t deal in the superďŹ cial and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll never cover any of that.
