Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all soldier on KERITH GABRIEL

I

â&#x20AC;&#x2122;m beginning to think this current Administration simply enjoys stirring the pot.

Well, that or protests must be really good for exposure.

Fueled by itchy Twitter ďŹ ngers and awful nationally televised speeches, the leader of the pack ladles things up with arcane ideology and dangerous rhetoric.

But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not surprising. He ran a campaign mired in sexism, racism and alleged collusion. His lack of denouncing the now overtly obvious racial hatred and bigotry has arguably further divided a nation. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not like we didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always know racism existed, but there is a bit of shock at just how ready racists are to rip off their masks and sing it from the mountain top.

Sadly, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not even what shocks me anymore.

What Trump and his rotating door of muppets are doing to transgender and nongender identiďŹ ers of our armed forces is perhaps one of the more cruel and manipulative mandates made since the start of his term. While this imposed ban arrived with respect to the U.S. Coast Guard, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a ban that will affect all branches of our combined forces.

The phasing out of people dedicated to defending our country under the belief that the former administration didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t effectively prove that transgender service members would not â&#x20AC;&#x153;hinder military effectiveness and lethality, disrupt unit cohesion, or tax military resources,â&#x20AC;? is BS on an already layered cake of BS. The latter of cost being the deciding factor as the government doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to pay for elective surgeries for these members is perhaps the greatest cop out, but one that again has caused divide and an inability to see people as a mixed bag of human beings.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve talked to quite a few highly educated people who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seem to be educated on 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

the true cost of war. I get that. Unless you work at the Department of Defense you arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t going to be privy to exact dollars and cents, but you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to drive to the Pentagon every day to understand that this is a silly notion.

Earlier this month, PBS Newshour correspondent William Brangham interviewed Agnes Gereben Schafer, a strategist who in 2016 conducted a study for the DoD under the Obama administration on allowing transgender people in the armed forces and the costs associated. Schaefer noted that the cost for these surgeries range anywhere from $2.4 million to $8.4 million for the government.

Not per soldier, mind you. Total.

Plus this ďŹ gure is only accurate assuming the estimated 11,000 total transgender members of the armed forces, both active and reserve, elected to have the surgery.

Which they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t.

It reportedly costs $17,500 to equip one soldier for war and this is just for what they carry daily. We have millions of troops stationed all over the world and thousands currently in active duty. Earlier this month, President Trump elected to send an additional 5,000 troops into Afghanistan.

Remember after you equip them, you have to deploy them. Which according to CNN.com, costs upward of $850k to $1.4 million per soldier.

But letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s use the basic numbers. $17.5k to outďŹ t an additional 5,000 troops equates to $87.5 million for the government and ultimately the American taxpayer. So weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll readily fork out $87.5 million, but scoff at less than $9 million for a surgery that affects a fraction of our military manpower?

I did the math and at the end the only thing that added up is this administrationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inability to accept people for who they are.

To use cost as a reason is insulting, disrespectful and pathetic. Think about it: our country would refuse to offer someone ready and willing to lay down their life to protect freedom a surgery that would grant that person the freedom to be who they choose.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the type of notion among many in this current political and social climate that continues to bring Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rich melting pot from a simmer to a hard boil. Q TWITTER: @SPRTSWTR

The Fringe Festivalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inaugural debut in Philadelphia featuring just 50 total shows.

Montanaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s latest dance production, â&#x20AC;&#x153;KINK HAĂ&#x153;S,â&#x20AC;? kicks off Philly Fringe Festival at the Latvian Society on Sept.

5. For the last three months, he has been transforming this ad hoc theater space into an ultra-queer, underground nightclub, replete with steampunk grafďŹ ti and an enormous silicone penis that dangles from the catwalk. A hanging sign reads â&#x20AC;&#x153;REJECTED MATERIAL.â&#x20AC;? An operatic rock ballad â&#x20AC;&#x201D; â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dark Nightsâ&#x20AC;? by Dorothy â&#x20AC;&#x201D; blasts through the speakers.

Montana self-produced his ďŹ rst Fringe show, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Basement,â&#x20AC;? in 2013 at the Asian Arts Initiative. His budget came out of his pocket at the time. After working a

restaurant shift, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d bike down to Home Depot to buy props for his set. This year, thanks to fans he has won over six years of Fringe performances, Montana fundraised more than $11,000 to put on his kinky nightclub fever dream. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in the process of starting his own nonproďŹ t dance company. Amid all of this motion, he feels himself getting older and further from the soul of Fringe.

Rehearsal is over, and the 28-year-choreographer is ďŹ ddling with a plastic zipties to use reconnect the severed lengths of chain. Each year the production value of his shows gets bigger. He transformed this same space into a fairytale wonderland for 2016â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Wroughtland,â&#x20AC;? and in 2015, into a brooding, candlelit chapel for a particularly well-received show titled â&#x20AC;&#x153;Purgatory.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;This whole balls-to-the-wall, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;tgive-two-fucks, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m-just-here-to-make art is that real essence of Fringe,â&#x20AC;? Montana says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I get sad the more and more I make work and the bigger my work gets, the further I stray from that â&#x20AC;Ś Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m really happy to be able to be where Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m at, but at the same time I kind of miss being a nobody and just doing my thing.â&#x20AC;?

But the nobodies, as it happens, would probably sacriďŹ ce limbs to be in one of Gunnarâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shows today.

FringeArts, the nonproďŹ t brainchild of the festival, is now showcasing young artists who werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even born when the Fringe Festival began in 1996. The scale has grown over the years, according to FringeArts director Nick Stuccio. Uncurated productions, which range from high-end stage acts to mobile one-woman performances, still make up the bulk of the festival. Two decades ago, Fringe had 60 curated and uncurated performances; this year will showcase more than 200, plus another fresh slate of online-only digital shows.

Two miles away, a dozen UArts students are rehearsing in a cramped black-box theater in Gershman YMCA on South Broad Street. The title of the piece, â&#x20AC;&#x153;An Incomplete List of All the Things Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m Going to Miss When the World is No Longer,â&#x20AC;? has the windedness of a post-rock song. Its 19-year-old creator, Dante Green, is reckoning with some weighty subject matter â&#x20AC;&#x201D; death, life after death, experimenting with hallucinogenic drugs â&#x20AC;&#x201D; through a mix of dance, song and dialogue. In one chorus, student actors break out into a mournful harmony about hunting for signs of hope in a bleak world.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no course credit for Green and his peers. Like Montanaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s early works, 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

Green is ďŹ nancing his own project. Why? For the glory of Fringe. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To be able to be 19 and show this thing that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been working on to the whole city of Philadelphia â&#x20AC;Ś I think thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like it,â&#x20AC;? Green says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That is the soul.â&#x20AC;?

Make no mistake: Many Fringe shows are startlingly bad. The awful factor is part of the tradition. Conventional advice varies for ďŹ rst-time and veteran attendees alike, but in general, one should take a gamble on (at least) three uncurated shows. One will be bad and another one will also be bad. But one will likely change the way you look at the performing arts.

Today, with its $3-million-a-year budget and a new waterfront headquarters, Philly FringeArts still retains its fundamental democratic virtues. Artists pay to play, and no one is spurned for lack of talent. The success or failure â&#x20AC;&#x201D; largely fueled by the media (and the gossip mill) over the course of the festival â&#x20AC;&#x201D; rests on each showâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s laurels, Stuccio says.

Philly Fringe has its growing pains, but theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not as bad as others. The eponymous festival in Edinburgh, Scotland,

began in 1947 as a protest movement against the high-brow and the elite theater festivals that excluded serious works from unknown artists. In 1966, Tom Stoppard premiered his now-famous drama, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead.â&#x20AC;? Today, sophomore comedy acts dominate the festival, so much that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to imagine a serious, three-act drama dramatic work ďŹ nding a stage. â&#x20AC;&#x153;No one would give a shit now,â&#x20AC;? says Stuccio. But in Philly, there is still space â&#x20AC;&#x201D; this year, at least.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not the artistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s paradise it once was.

Funding remains an ever-graver concern for artists given the current economic climate. When Fringe begin in the mid1990s, Stuccio recalls that thespians rented Old City apartments for $200 a month, and there was cheap warehouse space within a stoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s throw in any direction.

But the silver lining of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s real estate boom is that, each year, more Fringe shows appear in neighborhoods outside of Center City.

There are varying opinions about the Fringeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s slate of curated shows â&#x20AC;&#x201D; which tend to be established, crowd-drawing

acts that are premiering new work â&#x20AC;&#x201D; but many of those curated artists got their start on the festivalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ground ďŹ&#x201A;oor. For one, protean director-actor Thaddeus Phillips opened Fringe in the mid-1990s with a solo rendition of Shakespeareâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Tempest,â&#x20AC;? relayed from a plastic kiddie pool. Phillips has returned to more than a dozen festivals since then, and this year heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll produce his latest work, â&#x20AC;&#x153;A Billion Nights on Earth,â&#x20AC;? on the FringeArts main stage.

Other artists come to the festival midcareer. Choreographer Lela Aisha Jones, 39, had a ďŹ rst Fringe experience just a few years ago, and returns his year â&#x20AC;&#x153;Plight Release and the Diasporic Body,â&#x20AC;? an Afrocentric production that was commissioned

by Temple Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dance department. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Fringe is an open space thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ready go for whatever message you have,â&#x20AC;? Many names in theatre, the arts and more keep making the pilgrimage to the annual Fringe Festival. Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a look at a few of them. several of Fringeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very ďŹ rst performers, a group of progressive theater artists who in 1997, were just coming into their own.

A conforming thought for Stuccio who was in the similar situation right around the same time. After studying classical ballet and biology at Skidmore College, he apprenticed with the Pennsylvania Ballet and won a position as a corps member with the company where he danced for eight years. Reflecting on 21 years of the people and moments that made Fringe what it is today

so many of Fringe 2017â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Murdererâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Row of iconic theater practitioners â&#x20AC;&#x201C; those who headline the Festival as part of its â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fringe Arts Curatedâ&#x20AC;? tag â&#x20AC;&#x201C; were only just making their mark in the Philadelphia area in 1996. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[Playwright and actor] Thaddeus [Phillips] had just ďŹ nished college (Colorado College, then a year at Charles University (DAMU) in Prague) and started making theater,â&#x20AC;? says Stuccio of the man behind Fringe 2017â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s whimsical, familyfriendly Billion Nights on Earth and a dozen other Festival productions since the ďŹ rst Fringe in 1997. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The guys from Pig Iron [Theater] had all just graduated from Swarthmore, set up shop and only just created their initial works in 1995 and 1996 (Odyssey, Dig or Fly) when they got to the ďŹ rst Fringe Fest,â&#x20AC;? says Stuccio of 1997â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cafeteria. That quirky affair was the start of a beautiful relationship between the Pig Iron braintrust (founders Dan Rothenberg, Dito van Reigersberg, Quinn Bauriedel), one that ďŹ nds itself furthered by the deeply existential, life questioning, symphonic new epic, A Period of Animate Existence. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whit MacLaughlin had just moved here from Virginia with his whole New Paradise Laboratories (NPL) ensemble, performers like Lee Etzold, and commenced to thrill local audiences,â&#x20AC;? with their deeply experimental work. Stuccio was quick to add that MacLaughlin, with NPLâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new Fringe offering â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the horrordriven Hello, Blackout â&#x20AC;&#x201C; has only grown â&#x20AC;&#x153;more radical and experimental in his themes and his approach to theater.â&#x20AC;?

Performance artist/theater innovator Geoff Sobelle had only just arrived from Los Angeles to Philadelphia and joined his aesthetic with that of Pig Iron Theater as an itinerant member, as well as creating solo works for the Fringe. As someone whose newest work, â&#x20AC;&#x153;HOME,â&#x20AC;? all-but deďŹ nes and lends a conceptual umbrella of comfort and cool to the 2017 Fringe, Sobelle is proud â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and surprised â&#x20AC;&#x201C; to be part of the Murderers Row of this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fest, especially since several artists (Pig Iron, NPL) havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t given work to Stuccio in several years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lovely, and no, I was not aware of all of these artists and old friends of mine coming together in one place and one year,â&#x20AC;? says Sobelle during a temporary break from HOME rehearsal to take in the solar eclipse. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Pig Iron was my artistic home for many many years.

and generous to my ideas, and HOME is just the latest chapter. I feel great thinking of myself as part of that ideal, that moment, past and present.â&#x20AC;?

Stuccio assured that bringing new icons and new friends to bear on the Curated Fringe was, and is, his number one goal. David B. Devan, general director and president of Opera Philadelphia, presented Andy: A Popera in 2015 through the Fringe Fest, and this year, co-presents director Bill T. Jonesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; We Shall Not Be Moved at the Wilma Theater for 2017. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Relationships are built on trust,â&#x20AC;? says Devan. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t look for people who are like me, I try to partner with people who are different from me and who bring different perspectives, but who I trust. Nick is one of those guys. The basis for the trust is that I think we share a desire to explore contemporary life through artistic activity that has meaning.â&#x20AC;?

New friends or old, Stuccio is just pleased to get this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fringe Festival off the ground with a grand mix of new and old. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is an interesting time in the cultural history of our city as all of our old friends have come to play with our new friends,â&#x20AC;? says Stuccio. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My desire, when I started Fringe, was not to make but to support. The artistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s desire was to talk about our culture through their own particular lenses. So there is a nice symmetry to this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fest; a real point of origin story â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a cultural big bang â&#x20AC;&#x201C; that you could see blossoming into something bigger. These guys have all found fame beyond Philadelphia. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all grown up.â&#x20AC;?

into the drug trade in NetďŹ&#x201A;ixâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Narcos, one of that networkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ rst original programs, a fact that makes the actor proud. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love it, but try not to binge watch and, instead, pretend the shows come on nightly or weekly,â&#x20AC;? he says reminding me that his â&#x20AC;&#x153;Agent Owensâ&#x20AC;? on Narcos is lost in the jungle. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At least thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s my logic as the second and third season writers canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seem to ďŹ nd him anywhere.â&#x20AC;?

When it comes to Billions however, Phillips claims this new production is a break from that. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Billions is where ideas, themes and content are stripped down to bare essentials, he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;From [my past performances of] The Melting Bridge to Red-Eye to Havre de Grace, [these have] been full of detailed ideas about the world, politics [and] the creation of the Universe.â&#x20AC;?

This new work has as many ideas as, say, 17 Border Crossings, but there, Phillipsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; concepts are unspoken and condensed into one narrative about crossing borders. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Billions does the same thing, but with many visual motifs and ideas â&#x20AC;&#x201C; so actually it will be a accumulation of sorts of the physical and psychic through

Phillips states that children possesses a constant wonder about the sky, space and natural things. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Often, adults get bogged down in the rules of a human created society,â&#x20AC;? Phillips said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Night time is a time of looking up, thinking, dreaming and imagining inďŹ nite possibilities and wondering about what the universe is, who we are and what is actually happening.â&#x20AC;?

So along with local father-and-son actors Michael and Winslow Fegely, and installation artist Dufala â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the art of the latter Phillips lauded as â&#x20AC;&#x153;insanely clever, playful and imaginative,â&#x20AC;? and that he looks at each scene as an installation, painting or sculpture, â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Phillipsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; other collaborator on Billions was his son, Rafael.

Rather than slow his output â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and having a child has â&#x20AC;&#x153;increased it dramaticallyâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; while exploding his international footprint in the theatrical world, Phillips has toured 17 Border Crossings across the globe and began freelance directing, with his latest being an adaptation of Shaun Tanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s graphic novel The Arrival in Sweden. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I always start with ideas, images and concepts before stories and the line of reasoning behind A Billion Nights on Earth is simple, a work that a parent and child could see together,â&#x20AC;? says Phillips. hen Fringe boss Nick Stuccio says New Paradise Laboratoriesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; co-founder and artistic director Whit MacLaughlin has only grown â&#x20AC;&#x153;more radical and experimental in his themes and his approach to theaterâ&#x20AC;? since their arrival in Philadelphia, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really only describing half of the picture.

With his arrival here from Virginia, and NPLâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ rst shows for the Fringe Festival, MacLaughlin and a company â&#x20AC;&#x201C; that (still) includes actor-movement artist-lighting designer Matt Saunders â&#x20AC;&#x201C; exploded the pop cultural mythology of machismo, athletics, mating rituals, The Beatles, James Bond, Castenada, Playboy and Marcel Duchamp with cheerful absurdity and a touch of the sinister. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I came to Philadelphia just after the Fringe Festival began and our work has transformed and become even more ad3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

venturous over time,â&#x20AC;? says MacLaughlin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve grown up with the Festival.

Perhaps it goes without saying, but the Fringe Festival has been an excellent partner through the years. It has walked with us hand-in-hand throughout our 21-year history. A multi-year blind date.â&#x20AC;?

When MacLaughlin considers Stuccioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s umbrella concept of home for 2017â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fringe, the NPL boss is quick to say that with its contribution to this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s festival, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hello Blackout!â&#x20AC;? he and his troupe are â&#x20AC;&#x153;returning to a house that has been reconsidered, remade, and made strange by the folks that moved in while we were looking the other way. Hopefully thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot of innovation and good evolution.

If not, at least itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a very interesting time and decent, clean, and vibrant place to hang around.â&#x20AC;?

With all that, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hello Blackout!â&#x20AC;? sounds like a rather dangerous place to hang around: a politicized, horror-farce with what MacLaughlin and co-com-

I greatly admired â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Get Outâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; (the eerily comic recent race-relations ďŹ&#x201A;ick from director Jordan Peele) because its kick and terror came from unexpected, realistic sources,â&#x20AC;? says MacLaughlin of its blend of horror with social issues with a really unnerving accuracy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Hello, Blackout!,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; we are exploring the horriďŹ c limitations of our ability to think about things â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the almost ontological problem of consciousness trapped inside a prison of its own making. We hope this will reďŹ&#x201A;ect meaningfully on the more bizarre characteristics of the world we actually live in...if you get my meaning.â&#x20AC;?

Along with crowing about the addition of another actor to the NPL family in Jeffrey Cousar, a former dancer with Rennie Harris Puremovement, MacLaughlin is proud to espouse the graces of Raineyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work, a score-maker who always kicks MacLaughlinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work into a new gear. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This time, we are performing with a live chamber orchestra, but not like anything you hear at most chamber music performances,â&#x20AC;? says MacLaughlin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In a sense, this performance will be as much a music concert as it is a theater piece.

This ensemble is a supergroup of musicians who are equally skilled in extended techniques as well as standard classical intonation. I can truly say, the music in â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Hello Blackout!â&#x20AC;&#x2122; is going to blow people away.â&#x20AC;?

Also in part too because MacLaughlinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Kissimmee clan is very badly behaved. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Alien. Barely human,â&#x20AC;? he says with a laugh â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am reminded of Goyaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s painting of the family of King Charles IV. That family gave Goya a rich opportunity to comment on leadership â&#x20AC;&#x201C; both good and bad â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in public. The Kissimmees do the same thing for us. They give us an opportunity to examine some of the thornier challenges of being alive today. This family allow us to ask the question: What is human consciousness, really? We walk daily with it, carrying it right inside our heads, but is it ours or is it a sort of a specter â&#x20AC;&#x201C; an unnamed companion â&#x20AC;&#x201C; that follows its own rules? Is there a monster living inside each of us? I ask this question often as I check my Facebook feed or read the about current White House antics over my morning coffee.â&#x20AC;? Q

was caused by benzene exposure from the host of chemicals dumped at the former Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC) in the 1950s through the early 70s. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This piece is very political, but it is also very personal,â&#x20AC;? said Love who was nine at the time of her sisterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passing.

Love has dealt with her sisterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death through her solo work over the years.

But while her own work has been nonpolitical in nature, the collaborative places social justice at the forefront of its mission. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I really wanted to jump in and doing something that was more political in regards to this, especially because the community is still hurting,â&#x20AC;? said Love, who is also an assistant professor of art at Penn State Abington College. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A really critical piece of why we work well together is because on top of all of this other stuff, there is a shared commitment to what we think is politically relevant and what we think is important to comment on socially, and beyond that is this aesthetic thatâ&#x20AC;Śis how we all think,â&#x20AC;? said Gabrielle Russomagno, who collecting stories and doing portraitures of Warminster citizens affected by the water pollution.

In preparation, the collaborative constructed the exhibit off of mountains of research, including interviews, town halls, scientiďŹ c research, and partnerships with congressmen and other ofďŹ cials. One such relationship of TangenTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s is with Lora Werner, who works with the Environmental Protection Agencyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Central for Disease Control. As Love explained, the CDC is in the midst of assessing the health of Warminsterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s population, which includes the history of the naval base and chemical dumping, the toxicity level of the since closed wells, and the array of pervading illnesses in Warminster that could be linked to the chemicals, most notably from PerďŹ&#x201A;uorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and PerďŹ&#x201A;uorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) According to Love, Warminster currently pumps water in from North Wales, a cost that the community shoulders alone. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The [EPA is] trying to clean the chemicals out of the wells, but they are not doing it effectively, quickly enough, and with enough ďŹ nancial support from the government and the navy to do that,â&#x20AC;? argued Love.

The community has also asked for blood tests to ďŹ nd out the level of chemicals in individualâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bloodstreams. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is legislation that has been passed by Pennsylvania.

It is in the federal courts now to get funding to do blood testing for the community, but it hasn't been approved yet,â&#x20AC;? relayed Love. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weight of Waterâ&#x20AC;? is the TangenTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ rst exhibit that has direct, personal resonance with one of its members. The art group has worked on a number of projects over the span of nearly ten years, showcasing an upwards of 20 exhibits. Their ďŹ rst work together was entitled â&#x20AC;&#x153;Echo, Echo, Echo,â&#x20AC;? which dealt with over-consumption in society. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interesting about the collaboration is we all bring a slightly different strength to the table,â&#x20AC;? said William Cromar, who the art program at Penn State Abington College. â&#x20AC;&#x153; [Russomagno] is involved with photography and videography. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m involved with new media, but by way of sculpture and design. Yvonne is pretty much hardcore sculpture. Mike [Brenner] is a musician.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are like a band. d l delphia. â&#x20AC;?In Philly you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really go to a venue and expect to have a good time, just on any given day, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just not the culture of the city,â&#x20AC;? explained Burton. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What I always tell people who ask me for advice on navigating Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nightlife scene, I always tell them to follow DJs who match their style.â&#x20AC;?

Audiophiles will have a rare chance to see if they connect with the DJs away from their turntables at Burtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s free event that will take place at 5:30pm on Tuesday, September 19 at South Kitchen & Jazz Parlor. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I always wanted to have a conversation with DJs of various genres or scopes of work, just to bring them together and to have a conversation of one, their art, b the current climate of the city as well,â&#x20AC;? but said Burton of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Who Rocks the Party,â&#x20AC;? which is a play on MC Lyteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 90s classic â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cold Rock A Party.â&#x20AC;? Burton hopes that events such as these will change the lands nightlife landscape and â&#x20AC;&#x153;thought pattern that [people] can always go to New York g or D.C. instead of going to a club in their own backyard.â&#x20AC;?

According to Burton, many of these DJs live in close proximity to one another k in West Philly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So I want to know what the culture is in West Philly. How has the

culture of West Philly impacted their DJ style, and why they all decided to become DJs,â&#x20AC;? questioned Burton, who attended the same high school, Central High, as King Britt and Matthew Law. These are some of the pre-prepared conversation topics Burton has come up with to structure the event, although a good portion will be allocated to audience questions.

It is through this â&#x20AC;&#x153;access of informationâ&#x20AC;? that Burton believes Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nightlife scene can be strengthened. One area that Burton wants to remedy is the age dynamic. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think there is a misconception that people in their 30s donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to go out. I would love to change that,â&#x20AC;? said the 29-year-old who is teetering the acceptable party age line. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The charge of market of the industry is 25-to-35. I know people want to go out, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what keeps them in the city.â&#x20AC;?

he best way to brew really good beer is to learn from your mistakes.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the sentiment of the entire collection of brewmasters at North Philadelphia-based Saint Benjamin Brewing Company and its fearless leader, owner Timothy Patton.

See last year, the collective created its inaugural beer for the annual Fringe Festival, but the draw was tough, admittedly noted Patton, who said using heather as part of the ďŹ&#x201A;avoring probably wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the smartest idea. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yeah, [the] heather [beer] was a tough sell, and it didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the best ďŹ&#x201A;avor stability in bottles,â&#x20AC;? Patton recently told PW. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Plus, nobody was dying to have heathered beer and the shelf life was awful so for us there was no point in making it again.

The solution? A pale ale dubbed â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fringe BeneďŹ tsâ&#x20AC;? Patton believes will be a crowd pleaser. Sold primarily as a draught, (and a select number in bottles) the brew will be at a select number of establishments linked to Fringe shows and the main attraction during the three-week festival at Saint Benjaminâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s North Philly taproom (1710 N. 5th St.) and at the bar at La Peg, FringeArtsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; ofďŹ cial headquarters (140 N. Columbus Blvd). â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re using a New Zealand hop called azacca that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re are a huge fan of and we think people will really enjoy,â&#x20AC;? Patton said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re also using oats in [this version] of the [Fringe] beer to give it a little more body. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll really have a distinct ďŹ&#x201A;avor and after last year, we think people will really enjoy this a lot more.â&#x20AC;?

Despite what Patton might see as a fail, it hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stopped Fringe from tapping the brewery again for another year and SBB recently linked with the Parkway Council to create Parkway Centennial Pale Ale, a signature beer to debut during Parkway 100, the Sept. 8 centennial celebration of Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most iconic strip. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In general, we love the idea of doing a lot of work with different city groups and civic institutions we align with,â&#x20AC;? said Patton. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Many times, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll ask us for a signature beer that we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t move. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll want one keg, but the smallest batch we make is 20 at any time. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d already had a relationship with La Peg, just from our relationship as a vendor...itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s such a perfect ďŹ t for us culturally [and I think] being a signiďŹ cant but smaller arts organization, I think that they liked the idea of working with a smaller brewery.

As a brewery, the ďŹ t could also come from the fact that being unconventional and experimental is the game and those traits have been the soul of Fringeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 21-year history.

The Flat Earth Show type: Improv and sketch comedy Why you should go: Good or bad, improv is always worth the time. However, the accolades keep piling up for this collective known as Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most senior sketch comedy team. In 2016, Flat Earth picked up a pair of awards as the best new troupe at the Montreal Sketchfest and received a producerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pick award at the Toronto Sketchfest. Despite the venue, the acting is always intense and is the reason why this show sells out year after year. Plus cabaret in a cemetery sounds dope. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s this trait of playing away from traditional stages and playhouses and taking the act to the street that has made this New York production a success wherever the caravan stops. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never been to the large industrial space that is Firth and Wilson Transport Cycles on Frankford Ave. it will be interesting to see how this space is converted for what sounds like a really introspective theater performance.

Ferracone: We did a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Live at Five,â&#x20AC;? which is when they invite local bands on air at 5pm on Fridays on 104.5. We just exchanged some emails afterwards, thanked them for having us, and Amber Miller reached out to the band like a month ago and asked us to do the slot.

We were very fortunate and happy to be asked.

You all went to Kutztown University so basically this is the cheerleading squad for the school here. But how did you all meet?

Vallone: Me, Luke, John, Anthony, and Dylan. We all went to Kutztown.

Nils and Mike are from the Philly area so we hooked-up with them when we wanted to hire the horn section. As far as how we met at Kutztown, it was a lot of happenstance. Like, meet this guy by this part of the campus or meet this guy at this club â&#x20AC;&#x201D; eventually we just all came together.

formed in 2012 at Kutztown University about just their continued rise in the music world.

hile the bill touted the likes of Portugal. The Man and Vance Joy, it was Groove Merchants, How does it feel just now having opened for a ďŹ ve-member funk blues band that recently owned the stage at the Radio Portugal. The Man and Vance Joy? Vallone: Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pretty insane. The whole 104.5-FM Summer Block Party earlier process has been about a month and a this month.

With songs from their 2016-released half of buildup, getting everything ready album â&#x20AC;&#x153;Take it.â&#x20AC;? The band, all twenty- â&#x20AC;&#x201D; getting the horns together. Then we something hopefuls include: lead singer got here around 11:30am, and we probTye Vallone, guitarist Luke Ferracone, ably looked dumb, because we were like trumpeter Dylan Hinnershitz, bassist â&#x20AC;&#x153;this is so cool.â&#x20AC;? Who had the idea to form the band, the name, etc?

Vallone: I met John ďŹ rst. We were just chilling on the quad one night, jamming some tunes. And then I met Anthony, because he and I both play drums so we met in the Jazz band. Then John, Anthony and I got together as a little trio, and that was the trio that came up with the name â&#x20AC;&#x153;Groove Merchants.â&#x20AC;? Anthony and Luke went to the same high school so when I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t play with John and Anthony, they would play with Luke. Long story short, we were playing a show where we were both on the bill as two different acts â&#x20AC;Ś and I was like â&#x20AC;&#x153;that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t work. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only one person difference so why donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t we all just play together?â&#x20AC;? None of them sang, so I said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll sing, Luke will play guitar, and we will make a bunch of noise.â&#x20AC;? Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pretty much how it happened.

marketplace. Of course you have to think about those things when you are trying to market in music, you have to, but when we make the music thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not really in the conversation.

Vallone: I think people connect to the music, because of the energy. The way we started playing was in Kutztown, really small venues and house parties. Everybody was really in your face and high energy. We love that so I think when we write, we try to capture that same vibe.

Tye, you definitely have energy, especially with those dance moves at the mic.

Vallone: Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m just acting a fool when I do that. We are honestly surprised sometimes by how many people, our age, dig all the stuff. We do other gigs where we do a lot of cover tunes and old blues, and all of the old-heads, they get into the stuff, but the younger crowd does too.

You just released your second album last year called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Take It.â&#x20AC;? Can you describe the album in one word?

Ferracone: Almost. We are constantly shooting for that thing. It comes out in glimpses, sometimes you miss it, and sometimes you hit it. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a running joke, like â&#x20AC;&#x153;we almost got there.â&#x20AC;? When someone messes up, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like, â&#x20AC;&#x153;we almost got it man.â&#x20AC;?

Vallone: We actually wanted to call the record â&#x20AC;&#x153;Almost,â&#x20AC;? but they were like â&#x20AC;&#x153;no, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s too much.â&#x20AC;?

How does this album differ from your first self-titled, self-produced record?

Ferracone: I think the ďŹ rst one was a little more experimental, not experimental musically, but experimental where we werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t as organized and just put stuff on tape that we had been playing. When the second record came along, we played a lot more, had a lot more experience, and just captured that.

How do you make a genre like blues appeal to a younger demographic? Even though this What song would you recommend Groove is an alternative concert, it is not common for Merchant newbies listen to first?

Guidotti: Probably â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hold Your Millennials to be hardcore blues fans.

Ferracone: When we write these tunes, we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t necessarily have that in mind of what will appeal to people. We just try to see what moves us the most and feels truest to us. We just follow that and put that out there, and hopefully like minded people will come. But we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really worry too much about getting into a particular

Hand,â&#x20AC;? because it is the most relatable.

It could happenâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;indeed, it has happened for lots of folks. I have two friends who are married to men who dumped them, regretted it, and begged to be taken back. The trick, however, is to assume it wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t happen and make a conscious effort to get on with your life. (And, if necessary, a conscious effort to get under someone else.) Your boyfriend/ďŹ rst love/ďŹ rst fuck dumped you a little more than a month agoâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re allowed, one month and change later, to live in hope of a reconciliation. Odds are good, though, that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a false hope, DUMP, so donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t pass on any solid offers and keep seeing that therapist.Q
