S
o let me tell you what happened to me last week, Philadelphia.
I was involved in an auto accident. Except it wasn’t my fault. In fact, I wasn’t even in my car at the time of the accident. My car, parked on my street directly outside my house, was rear-ended by neighbor’s car, which was sideswiped by a motorist who fell asleep at the wheel by virtue of being under the inuence. My damage was extensive, but not as bad as my neighbor’s, who undoubtedly will be receiving a check for damages rendered since his vehicle resembled a crushed soda can. The force of the hit was so loud it sounded like a transformer blew. Needless to say, we call 911, expecting a ood of cops to come – the only ood we got were tow trucks from every angle, like vultures swooping down on a fresh carcass. It took 30 minutes before an ambulance showed up to check on the driver whose car suffered extensive damage as well. They came, saw she was visibly under the inuence of something but because she refused to be treated, they kept it moving. One hour, no cops. Two hours, nothing. It got to the point where we called non-emergency in our district and the ofďŹ cer who answered the phone said that if we wanted this to go by more quickly we’d be better off coming down to the station and ďŹ ling a report. Yeah because that’s not a complete inconvenience to both my neighbor and myself considering HQ is on the other side of my part of the city. It’s not like neither he or I planned to press any charges, we just wanted the shit documented. On top of that, perhaps this motorist could’ve used some guidance that only police would have solutions to at the ready. I mean since it was clear as day that sobriety, on this night, sat in the back seat. I know what you’re thinking, why not just exchange insurance information and keep it
3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20
moving? We would have, except the insurance card that was given to us was over 11 years old and ďŹ t the description of another car, not the one involved in the accident. The whole thing reeked of shadiness, which is why I wanted an authority ďŹ gure to attempt to regulate. Long story short, despite having an unfortunate addiction, this motorist was actually an upstanding person, somehow managing to call their insurance provider and expedite a copy. Coverage was full and my car is well on its way to being repaired and so is my neighbor’s. My gripe here, however, is not with the person who ran into my neighbor, who subsequently ran into me. It’s the zero fucks the cops gave the situation. I get there are way more egregious things happening, especially in my district – but shit, at least come make sure everyone is cool. One of the tow truck guys even claimed he saw a police car stroll up a parallel block, slowed to see what was going on before taking off. If true, wow. Two days later, I saw an ofďŹ cer parked in his squad car in a vacant lot near my house. As I walked by I joked and said “man, sure coulda used you guys when I called and called a few nights ago.â€? He asked what happened, and after I recalled the story, just as I’m retelling it in this column, he said, “yeah, if I can be honest with you? It’s tough to ďŹ nd an ofďŹ cer that’s going to come to that call, plus given the timing (the accident happened around 9:15-9:20 p.m., police have a shift change at 10 p.m.), a lot of guys are just trying to wrap up their shift. I shouldn’t be telling you this, but yeah there are some calls we just don’t go to, we let people handle it and usually things tend to take care of themselves.â€? I asked if he thought what he said was a pretty shitty thing to divulge and if he were in my shoes what how would he feel. His answer was surprisingly not what I expected but somehow completely understood. “Honestly? I wouldn’t have even called [the police]â€? he said. “I would’ve made sure this individual had insurance. If they didn’t I would’ve asked them to empty their pockets or cut me a check for my damages, something. But at the end of the day, if I called emergency services, I know they’d send someone out for me.â€? How can you be so sure? I asked. “Because,â€? he smirked. “I’m a cop.â€? Q

Many in both the gay community and medical community believe medical staff needs to be better equipped in the treatment of LGBT patients.
The doctor is OUT Why are so many in the medical field still out of touch when it comes to treating LGBT patients? BY TIMAREE SCHMIT
S
omething that should have been simple turned out to an exercise in humiliation. “I got a normal UTI and the doctor kept insisting it must be an STD and was so confused that it was just normal salmonella, says John, a 34-year-old gay Manayunk resident, about a recent experience with a physician. “He also was super weird about me going on Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and he kept asking why I needed to go on it if I was married. I just felt judged overall.
$8*867
John’s experience is a relatively benign example of the unpleasant experiences that LGBT patients encounter every day, a result of inadequate training for medical professionals nationwide. Physicians, nurses, physical therapists, pharmacists and others in the medical ďŹ eld receive minimal education in sexuality issues, and LGBT cultural competency in particular. The consequences can range from shaming interactions that deter gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans patients from seeking needed care to improper diagnosis and treatment, to an even more harsh denial of basic services. Starting in April 2019, the National Health Service (NHS)
in the United Kingdom will require physicians to ask patients about their sexual orientation. Research has shown that patients who disclose this information are twice as likely to receive appropriate screenings, vaccines and other needed care. The new guidance has been met with controversy, however. Many UK doctors reportedly feel deeply uncomfortable with discussing this topic and some argue that it’s irrelevant. The biggest problem is that doctors aren’t prepared to have these potentially awkward conversations. A study performed by Johns Hopkins University found a similar perspective stateside. In a survey of health practitioners in America, they found only half directly ask patients about sexuality. Many of those surveyed consider this information irrelevant to care, “a position contrary to longstanding clinical evidence, according to health researchers. Studies indicate fewer than 20 percent of physicians provide LGBT-relevant information to patients. What kind of information should doctors and nurses be getting? According to the National LGBT Health Education Center, training should include: relevant terminology, health disparities and barriers to care faced by LGBT people, clinical issues for which LGBT patients are at increased risk, and skill building on how to talk about gender and sexual activity. There are cultural factors that put gay, lesbian and bisexual people at greater risk of health problems. Research shows that being a member of a marginalized population increases the odds of mental health issues, substance abuse, HIV and other medical concerns. There are also issues with having access to healthcare and instances of outright discrimination that make queer people less likely to seek help for illnesses or get preventative screenings. Trans patients are particularly vulnerable to this lack of knowledge, citing staff who use the wrong name and pronoun, ask needless and insensitive questions, and even deny routine services. ‘Trans Broken Arm Syndrome’ is the term coined by writer Naith Payton to describe the phenomenon of health practitioners assuming every medical problem a trans person suffers is a result of their trans identity – right down to everything from a routine cold to an injury. LGBT cultural competency education is available, but has been rarely provided to medical students, historically. When asked about the training she’d received in LGBT competency, an ER nurse based in Pennsylvania told PW, “There wasn’t any. Some professors would tack on a sentence once per term about LGBT considerations, but it was very clear to me they hadn’t had any training themselves. Emily, a 29-year-old Philadelphia-based physical therapist said of her training: “barely any mention was made about sexual orientation/gender that I can recall. I still don't know

what to make of that. She added that intake forms for patients didn’t provide enough information about gender either and said, “I cringe when I hear about staff calling a transgender [patient] by the wrong pronoun. Another nurse Felipe says, “As a medical professional I can say that no training has prepared me to interact with Queer folks. As a Queer person who seeks out to understand other perspectives and having purposeful and meaningful interactions with diverse Queer community members, THAT alone has prepared me within my medical profession. Fortunately, some medical training programs are trying to address this need. The Penn Medicine Program for LGBT Health, for instance, was created in 2013 in response to reports about the barriers and discrimination LGBT patients were facing, according to Rosemary Thomas, the department’s director of operations. The program provides education within the Penn Medicine system to “increase knowledge about LGBTQ people and their needs. Last year Penn also started a LGBTQ Health course in the Family Medicine Department. It’s an elective open to medical students and residents that “aims to provide

learners with high volume exposure to gender-afďŹ rming primary care/hormone therapy for transgender/gender spectrum patients and HIV/PrEP management – things they don't typically get much didactic teaching on during their pre-clinical years,â€? according to its director, Dr. Allison Myers. She says there is roughly one student per month who takes it, which is the maximum allowed at a time. For those already practicing in the medical ďŹ eld, trainings are available from a variety of sexuality educators, consultants, and LGBT health organizations, but they will likely have to be sought independently from required schooling and licensure. For patients, Philly-based website QSpaces was developed as a sort of Yelp for LGBT medical care. Patients provide anonymous ratings and reviews of physicians, and seek out providers who are versed in queer health issues. These doctors are more likely to use their preferred name and pronoun, and generally have a non-judgmental approach. Locally, the Mazzoni Center is the largest medical center in Pennsylvania dedicated to serving the LGBT community. Q TWITTER: @TIMAREE_LEIGH

' &'# What was the impetus for starting this magazine? What made me want to start Daydreamers was rejection. When I graduated from college, I knew I wanted to be a magazine journalist; from day 1. So I applied to all of the top magazines I wanted to work for. I applied for writing positions, editing positions, you name it. Every single one of them said “no. It was crazy because to me because I did everything they say you’re supposed to do to get in. I went to school for it, I did internships, I wrote for my college magazine and newspaper, so I just thought to myself “what kind of candidate are you looking for, because it’s clearly not me.
A lot of people would press pause after so much rejection, what made you keep going?
IMAGE: KERITH GABRIEL
Bria Young checks out a copy of her magazine, Daydreamers, which the 23-year-old created as forum for people like her.
The stuff of dreams Tired of rejection, meet the woman who dreamed up what others said she wasn’t qualified for BY KERITH GABRIEL
$8*867
How did the name Daydreamers come about? Well, when I was working these jobs and applying to these magazines I was never really into what I was doing, and all day I felt like I was daydreaming. So I just researched what I needed to do to start a magazine and it really didn’t seem that difďŹ cult. The magazine came about from me daydreaming about it.
What’s the concept of Daydreamers? Who would want to read it?
I
f there was ever a picture to describe someone to ďŹ t the adage that there’s only so much one person can take, that image would be of West Philly native Bria Young. Even before graduating from Penn State, Young, 23, had dreams of working for a top magazine as an editor. The idea of collaborating, sharing ideas to put out a dynamic product weekly, monthly or quarterly was something she dreamed of. But that dream hit a wall as soon as rejection letter after rejection letter started hitting her inbox, citing inexperience, no need or just at out thanks for applying. But with each outlet sending her a reply stating they were going to pass her by, Young began to daydream of how she could do it herself. It was rejection that fueled her ďŹ rst issue of her own fully gloss magazine called, Daydreamers, full of stories, pictures and illustrations created by people just like her – just like all of us. Life is a struggle, but instead of letting it detract her from a goal, Young created an enterprise in
It didn’t really stop me to be honest. But the more and more I was rejected, the more I felt like I could do it, and these editors just weren’t giving me the opportunity. So I just needed to ďŹ nd a different way to do it, why can’t I start my own? Plus, at the time I was working this really crappy copywriting job for a tech startup making horrible money so I felt like with all this negativity, I needed to make a change, for myself.
IMAGE: KERITH GABRIEL
Young says her magazine is open to anyone that has a daydreaming mind. It’s a book for creatives who want to use her pages to make their imagination run free. hopes to get a little bit closer to it. Recently, in a conversation with PW, Young talked Daydreamers, her goals for it, and why none of us should ever take “noâ€? for a ďŹ nal answer.
Daydreamers is a print and digital literary magazine and is a place for digital artists, photographers, writers and other visual artists to run wild on my pages. I wanted it to be for daydreaming minds, for the people who put time aside to daydream and think about what they want to do in life, what they want to be, the changes they want to make in themselves in the world around them. I don’t know how many people are conscious of just how much they daydream over the course of a day, but I’m aware. So aware that I set aside time each day to daydream. I put my music in, look out a window and escape. It’s for people like me, the creators, the weirdos, the lovers.
Where did you start the magazine? I started it at home by myself, but collaborating is something I’ve always wanted
to do and when I dropped everything to work on my magazine full time is where I found a lot of people who wanted to collaborate, who saw my vision and was down for it. My goal was to get a strong team established because doing it all is really hard. I have a photographer, but a lot of what it is now is submissions, and a lot of interns. Last summer I had three young women serve as a social media manager, a stylist and a photographer and I think empowering them, empowered me as an editor. I proved to myself that I can manage a business and the work we produced collectively is something I’m very proud of.
Is there a level of empowerment in all of this too being a black woman? Your goal is to give daydreaming minds a space, how much of that is happening with a focus on giving women – specifically black women a forum for their creativity? It’s a good question. I never really wanted it to be a black thing. Regardless of race, we all daydream, right? But I will say I do want this to be a space for women to show off their creativity. I deďŹ nitely want it to be a woman thing. Ideally, Daydreamers would be [comprised] of an all-woman team, sorry fellas. Daydreamers is for men, but I’m passionate about this being a space for women to come and share their ideas freely without any restrictions. Some women are not 100 percent themselves and don’t let themselves shine in male-dominated situations. This is not that. [Laughs], In the future, when Daydreamers is poppin’ and I have newsrooms around the world, I’ll allow men to join our teams.
What do you hope is the ultimate takeaway from this magazine? Knowing your story and stories of rejection, what do you hope each issue portrays to a magazine editor who just might pick this up? I don’t know if I really see this as proving people wrong anymore. I deďŹ nitely had that mentality going into it, because I felt so much rejection, but now I look at it as giving back and having it be a place where someone can say “this was created for me.â€? This is a place for people who like poetry, like art, knowing about things that expand their mind. We’re not that magazine promoting the newest fashion trends or what Kardashian did last week. on the East Coast, before New York City. Boston's obviously had a great scene and like Chicago, had a lot of imports. It’s the home of Sam Adams. But when I think about the ďŹ rst East Coast city that really stood up to Denver and San Francisco and San Diego, in terms of the most notable beer cities in the country, Philly would be the ďŹ rst one to do that.
When did you have your first beer? Well, it was deďŹ nitely a Yuengling because that was what my dad drank when I was little. I was eight or ten, and it was probably me just asking, “can I take a sip of this?â€? and him being like, ‘yeah, sure,’ type of thing. I remember just hating it and then not wanting to try another beer for a long time after that.
When did you come back to beer? Reed: I remember the ďŹ rst time being like, ‘Oh, beer is kind of a cool thing,’ in high school. My dad and my uncle, either on Christmas or Christmas Eve, had a holiday mixed variety pack of Samuel Smith Beers, which is a British brewery from Yorkshire. I remember trying those beers and thinking, ‘Oh, that's not what I thought beer was.’ My uncle got into home brewing, briey‌he lost interest, but he would have the [home brewing] kits lying around. Me and my cousin, we were like 16, we would brew them and they were terrible, but we obviously drank them. We didn't care. And then that's when I started getting really into it.
It took you three tries to pass the Master Cicerone exam. What made the third time the charm?

Brian Reed is the only Pennsylvania and just one of 16 people in the world given the title of Master Cicerone, which is PhD status when it comes to beer.
Bottoms up Brian Reed, Pennsylvania’s only Master Cicerone, offers Philly Weekly a lesson on the art of beer BY ANDREA CANTOR
T
o properly drink a beer, Brian Reed says not to “chug or take “little bird sips, but to get a nice gulp and swish it in your mouth. But who is Reed to tell you how to drink your beer? Well, for one thing—he is, quite literally, a master of the beverage. Reed, 33, is one of 16 people in the

world, and the only Pennsylvanian, to earn the title of Master Cicerone, making him essentially the beer world’s version of Yoda. Hailing from Pittsburgh, he travels the nation with Miller-Coors’ “Know Your Beerâ€? initiative, performing blind taste tests to ďŹ nd out what consumers like when they take a sip – without the inuence of branding. Philadelphia Weekly sat down with Reed at Strangelove’s, a local bar he hasn’t been to since a National Home-
brewers Conference just ďŹ ve years prior, the last time he was in Philly to chat about his favorite topic on the menu.
What are your favorite bars to go to in Philly? I admittedly haven't spent as much time in Philadelphia as I would like. I remember one of the ďŹ rst beer bars that I immediately fell in love with in Philadelphia was Monk's Cafe, which is a longtime Philly standby. Obviously, anybody who drinks beer in Philly, probably knows about this bar. They would just get crazy things that no one else could get as far as rare beers and just a tremendous selection. It's dark, it's crowded, it's loud, like all the times I've been in there, that's what it's about. But it's very much an experience to be there and take in the history of that place. It has its own kind of unique feel and charm.
How do you view Philly in the beer world? It's the grandfather of craft beer scenes on the East Coast. Philly was really and truly the ďŹ rst city of craft beer
My mindset, I think I came in from a more conďŹ dent place. The ďŹ rst time, I really didn't know what the hell I was doing. I didn't have anybody really to help me or to set my expectations. I spent a lot of time on things that in retrospect really weren't going to be on there, like hop cultivation and breeding. I spent like ten hours study that, and it turns out nothing on that was on there. But that's going to happen no matter what. When you have a test like this where anything is on the table, you just try your best and you have to rely on your experience. Well, the second time, it was a disaster, a ball of nerves. We were shooting a documentary that was following me around preparing to take the exam. That was a punch in the gut. The third time was me not leaving anything up to chance. ‘I'm going to spend literally hundreds of hours and I'm just going to make it happen.’ And I really focused, just going in, being calm and competent, not freaking out.
Out of the 16 Master Cicerones, how many are women? There are two currently. I would venture to say that is going to change in a signiďŹ cant way. There are a few people that I know, either personally or have interacted with, that are preparing or leaning towards preparing to take the exam and are very promising candidates. So I would expect that number to go up in the very near future.
Why do you think there is a sex disparity in the beer world? Beer has suffered from a bit of a stigma over time that it's a dude drink. I can't tell you how many beer dinners I've either been a part of or been asked to be a part of that are titled ‘He Said Beer, She Said Wine,’ like some weird battle of the sexes. This old, outdated sexist approach of beers are for dudes and girls don't like beer is absolute bullshit. Organizations like Pink Boots Society are doing a lot to bring female brewers into the fold.
For those who aren’t beer experts, what advice would you give 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

Swish, don’t gulp is the best way to enjoy a beer according to Master Cicerone, Brian Reed. someone who gets confused choosing a beer from the menu? Knowing a little bit about beer styles goes a long way. Whenever people talk about the value of doing the ďŹ rst level of the Cicerone program, the certiďŹ ed beer server, people will be like, 'well I don't work in the industry, I'm not a beer server. I'm an accountant, but I like beer. So, what's the value in [a program like] that?' I will tell people you have to have a pretty solid understanding of beer styles to pass that exam. So when you look at a menu, you can go 'I know American IPA, I know what a Belgian Witbier is going to deliver on roughly, I know what an American porter is going to deliver on roughly.' So knowing about beer styles is going to give you a lot of context clues on [on a beer] list, and that reduces a little bit of anxiety around picking a beer. Also, don't hesitate to ask for a sample. Most places will just do that. They don't care. It's just an ounce of beer and they want you to be happy with the beer that you pick.
What advice would you give to self-proclaimed non-beer drinkers? A well-trained staff can go a long way to help somebody like that. The ďŹ rst question you want to ask them is 'what do you like, what do you drink?' And a lot of times I’ll tell [non-beer drinkers], 'what do you like
3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20
outside of beer?' And they'll start to tell me about how they like chardonnay or they like bourbon or they like a particular cocktail. Somebody may say, I really like a greyhound, which is gin and grapefruit juice. So, I will say 'you obviously like things that have a bit of an herbaceous to it, you don't mind perfume-y avors, and you like the taste of grapefruit. So [I would recommend] this grapefruit Saison or grapefruit Witbier. You can usually match avors without having to know much about the individual.
On the other side of the beer isle, what do you think is a misconception or a problem among those who they know beer? People who think they know beer are immediately snobby about it. I think that there is a culture that has kind of cropped up with beer in recent years that we jokingly refer to as the 'wine-iďŹ cation' of beer. If you're into beer and you love beer, you have to be really snobby and you have to make hot takes for days and you just have to be pretentious about it and shame people for the beers that they drink and things like that. And that's bullshit. I hate that. What I like about beer is that it is unpretentious, it's utilitarian and there's a beer for every occasion. Q TWITTER: @ANDREAJCANTOR

Suzanne Sheer has drawn comparisons to the likes of Adele and Amy Winehouse for her soulful, deep melodies on a keyboard or piano.
Sheer talent
Pittsburgh born and bred, here’s why singer Suzanne Sheer chose Philly in a quest to make everyone know her music BY KERITH GABRIEL
S
uzanne Sheer at a keyboard is music therapy. The range of sounds coming from her Yamaha and through a baritone voice that emotes tales of struggle, pain, loss and unrequited love is the kind of stories you’ve read in countless classic novels.
$8*867
Sheer plays the soundtrack to her life, one ďŹ lled with the excitement of love only to be shattered by bad timing or the unfortunate circumstance. Still with each breath, it sounds like there is an end goal through all the muck and misfortune, there’s hope. It’s a sound that has found the Pittsburgh native in studio sessions with the likes of rapper Wiz Khalifa, doing the background vo-
cals on a song called, “Without You,â€? one of Khalifa’s early mixtapes. However, Sheer decided to leave her black and yellow nest for Philadelphia for the opportunity to play on her own. Wasting little time upon arrival, it was an open mic night at Time (1315 Sansom St.) when Sheer knew she’d made the right decision. “Right when I ďŹ rst moved here, I said I wanted to ďŹ nd a place to perform, I have to go do it, I’m in Philly,â€? said Sheer, 25. “So my best friend and I went to Time, because they have an open mic session there. And we walk in and the house band The Living Sample is playing and immediately I’m so intimidated because they were so incredible.â€? Fast forward ďŹ ve years? Sheer says she’s friends with many members of that same group. It’s easy to ďŹ t in when you’re naturally predisposed to creating great music. But an effort to do so doesn’t come without sacriďŹ ce. Sheer hasn’t yet been able to sustain being ďŹ nancially independent on just her music, and works two jobs, one in a cafe and the other as a part-time nanny to foot the bill to get studio
time as she works on her upcoming album set to release later this year. “It’s not if Suzanne is going to make it, it’s really just when,â€? said Brianna DeMayo, founder of Fishtown’s Taste Creators, a fullservice marketing agency for up-and-coming artists. DeMayo has worked with Sheer since not long after her arrival to Philadelphia and says that in Sheer, there’s something special. “It’s not just that she’s naturally gifted, it’s how hard she works at it. Every free moment she’s working on her music, trying to grow her brand. It’s admirable to see and one of the reasons, for me personally, she’s been a pleasure to work with.â€? In May, Sheer released her ďŹ rst single, Conditioned, which received notable buzz. The kind of buzz that allows her to keep going and one that ďŹ nds her at least 3-4 times a year on a ight to Los Angeles to work with her producer and manager. “It’s very intense. I feel a lot sometimes even now that I’m living a weird double life,â€? said Sheer. “In Philly, I’m working like two jobs, while trying to kickstart a music career. So I’m doing that here and then I’m going out to Los Angeles to work with bigger labels and bigger artists and then coming back here to get back to work. So it’s a really intense grind in an attempt to have a career, but it’s not a career yet...but I go out to [LA] and the people I’m working with have the resources, have the best studios, best equipment. Just getting to record on various microphones, is something that gets me really excited.â€? Sheer’s foray into music started by listening to her dad play the family’s baby grand piano as a little girl. By the time she was 14, Sheer says she was playing songs by ear. By the time she got to high school, she was writing her own songs. “I knew I wanted to go to school for music and try to perfect my craft and see if I could do this as a career,â€? said Sheer. Around 2010, [after I graduated], I ended up meeting this producer named Ricky P., and I started creating music and songs for him and the reaction I was getting from those songs was incredible. I was like ‘okay, I found it, I’m deďŹ nitely going to keep doing this.’â€? Sheer’s sound is readily equated to the likes of Adele or Amy Winehouse, the latter who gives her perhaps the biggest sense of pride. But despite it being an honor to be compared to those two so readily, Sheer says she knows where she stands apart. “First of all, I have an Amy Winehouse tattoo, so anytime I’m compared to her I really get a sense of pride,â€? said Sheer, smiling. “Or Adele, I get Adele a lot. But it’s such a high honor, but I think people will see – especially when my album comes out – that I do have my own sound separate from all of that. I also think too that when people hear you they immediately compare you to what you sound like. It’s just what people do, but again it’s an honor when you hear names like that in comparison to your music.â€?

The Philadelphia soul community held a special place in its heart for the queen of the genre, Aretha Franklin, according to Philly soul and R&B legend, Kenny Gamble.
‘A special human being’ Philly soul legend Kenny Gamble reflects on the death of soul icon Aretha Franklin BY GREGORY DALE
A
retha Franklin, the crowned “Queen of Soul,â€? left the world devoid of an unparalleled talent following her death from pancreatic cancer on Aug. 16. Though she was an international treasure, the 76-year-old had a special connection with the City of Philadelphia, the blue-collar cousin to her native Detroit During her ďŹ nal performance in the city at the Mann Music Center on Aug. 26, 2017, she told the crowd while perched at the piano, “I started, really in Philadelphia. I worked at Pep’s [Showbar] on Broad Street and I worked at the Cadillac Club. I’ve worked all over Philadelphia.â€? Kenny Gamble, one half of the famed songwriting and pro-
$8*867
duction duo Gamble and Huff, who founded Philadelphia International Records, remembers those days very well. It was the early 1960s and he was in a band called the Romeos and he was eager to break into the music industry. “I remember my conversations with her during that particular time because everybody knew she was an extraordinary singer,â€? Gamble told PW I was trying to ďŹ gure out how to get into the music business at that time. I used to tell her, ‘I want to write a song for you.’ As the years went by, we would meet every now and then in passing and we all used to say something about getting together to work together.â€? Unfortunately, Gamble and his partner, Leon Huff, never got a chance to work directly with Franklin in the studio. However, the singer recorded cover versions of many of the
duo’s penned works including Jerry Butler’s “A Brand New Me,â€? and the O’Jays’ “Christmas Just Ain’t Christmas.â€? “She was good for doing that. Taking a song and putting her stamp on it,â€? Gamble said. He added that in addition to having a musical connection, he and Franklin also shared a love for giving back to the community. “She was a strong community activist,â€? he said. “Music and community activism was the extent of the conversations we had.â€? A pillar in the civil rights movement, Franklin’s music not only served as a soundtrack to the turbulent period in American history, but the singer also vowed to pay activist Angela Davis’ $250,000 bail after she was jailed in 1970 for an armed takeover of a courtroom in California that left four people dead. Davis was acquitted of all charges two years later. After the news of her death circulated across the Internet, the outpour of gratitude from fans and celebrities alike proved that the big-voiced singer also had a big heart to match. Former U.S. President Barack Obama tweeted: “Aretha helped deďŹ ne the American experience. In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade—our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect. May the Queen of Soul rest in eternal peace.â€? The singer’s journey began on March 25, 1942 in Memphis, Tenn. While she was still young, her father, Baptist minister C.L. Franklin moved the family to Detroit. Franklin’s mother, Barbara left the family when the signer was just six and died four years later, according to Biography. com. Franklin was reared in the church and sang in her father’s church choir, where she also learned how to play the piano. She also toured the gospel circuit with her father during this time. After releas-
ing a string of gospel albums as a teen, she ventured into singing R&B and moved to New York to jump start her career. In 1960, she signed to Columbia Records where she eventually released her ďŹ rst Top 40 hit “Rock-a-bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody.â€? After switching to Atlantic Records in 1966, she worked with producer Jerry Wexler and scored her ďŹ rst Top 10 hit, “I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You.â€? Hallmark singles such as “Respect,â€? “Think,â€? Since You’ve Been Gone,â€? and “Baby I love Youâ€? later followed and she was cemented as the “Queen of Soul.â€? The 1970s yielded the hits “Rock Steady,â€? “Don’t Play That Song,â€? and “Bridge Over Troubled Water.â€? Over the course of several decades, Franklin constantly reinvented herself with the changing times. In the 2000s, Franklin continued to release music and tour across the country. In 2005, President George W. Bush awarded her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Four years later, she performed at Obama’s inauguration. In 2017, the singer announced that she would stop touring. August this year, it was announced that the singer was in hospice care. She died in her native city days later surrounded by her family. Though the singer’s life was cut short, she leaves behind an enduring legacy, catalogue and impressive accolades. In addition to receiving 18 Grammy awards throughout the span of her career, she was also the ďŹ rst woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “You’ll never see anything like her again,â€? Gamble said. She was just a tremendously gifted person. Aretha Franklin will live for a long time because a spirit never dies. Her spirit was very powerful. she was just a special human being.â€? SAVAGE LOVE
Pickles and Surrogates DAN SAVAGE
I
’m in a pickle. All I want is to experience touch, intimacy, and sexual pleasure— but without freaking out. I grew up with a lot of negative messages from men due to developing early, as well as having some other physical/sexual trauma (no rape or abuse), but the combination has me seriously fucked up. Whenever I get close to physical intimacy with someone, I run away. I actually faked an emergency once and physically ran away because I knew sex was a possibility that night. I’m not a virgin—but in those instances, I’ve been really drunk (and experienced no emotional/physical pleasure). This is not what I want for my life. I want a relationship and love, and to be open and comfortable with someone expressing their care for me in a physical way without panicked thoughts ooding my brain. I’ve done lots of therapy, which has helped, but not enough. I recently heard of something called a sexual surrogate. From what I understand, it’s somebody who is trained to therapeutically provide physical touch and intimacy in a controlled and safe environment. Are they legit? – She Can’t Adequately Release Extreme Dread
Sexual surrogates are legit, SCARED, but please don’t call them sexual surrogates. “We’d like to see the language shift back to ‘surrogate partner,’ which was the original term, said Vena Blanchard, president of the International Professional Surrogates Association (IPSA). “Masters and Johnson originated the concept, and their treatment program was based on the theory that many people had problems that required the help of a cooperative partner, and some people didn’t have partners. So they trained people to work as ‘partner surrogates.’ The media took the term ‘partner surrogate’ and changed it to ‘sexual surrogate’ because it sounded sexier. But ‘sexual surrogate’ implies that the work is all about sex. So if surrogate partner therapy is not about sex—or not all about sex—then what is it primarily about? “Surrogate partner therapy is a therapeutic treatment that combines psychotherapy with

experiential learning,â€? said Blanchard. “It’s a program designed for people like SCARED, for people who struggle with anxiety, panic, and past trauma—things that can distort a person’s experience in the moment.â€? Surrogate partner therapy happens in stages, with each progressive stage representing another “teeny, tiny baby step,â€? as Blanchard put it. “The client ďŹ rst works with a legitimate therapist until the therapist thinks the client is ready to work with a surrogate partner,â€? said Blanchard. “You may start by sitting in opposite chairs and just talking. At some point, they might sit and hold hands, practice relaxation techniques, and focus on simple sensations. In the next session, they might touch each other’s faces with their hands.â€? Sex can and does sometimes occur in the later stages of surrogate partner therapy, SCARED, but it doesn’t always and it’s not the goal—healing is. “By having these repeated safe experiences, in a context where there’s no pressure, and consent is emphasized, and the patient is in control,â€? said Blanchard, “someone liked SCARED can learn to manage her anxiety, and her prior negative experiences are replaced with positive new experiences.â€? While I had her on the phone, I asked Blanchard the ďŹ rst question many people have about surrogate partners: Are surrogate partners sex workers? “A sex worker offers a sexual experience— that is the primary intention of what is a business transaction,â€? said Blanchard. “What a surrogate partner offers are healing and education. And while healing and education might also take place in a sex-work environment, and while some form of sexual contact might take place in surrogate partner therapy, the primary intention is different. A patient working with a surrogate partner is there to heal old injuries or break out of bad patterns so they can have a relationship in the future. People go to sex workers for an immediate experience—the agenda is sexual and about right now, not therapeutic and about the future.â€? Then I asked Blanchard the second question many people have about surrogate partner therapy: Is it legal? “There’s no place that it’s illegal,â€? said Blanchard. “There’s never been a court case challenging it. In California, where surrogate partner therapy is most common, no one has ever in 50 years challenged it.â€? If you’re interested in working with a surrogate partner, SCARED, you can contact the referrals coordinator at IPSA’s website: surrogatetherapy.org. Q

“I want to thank Kathy Conway again for the time she took to discuss some ideas my wife and I had regarding a potential real estate offer. Your insights were critical to help us understand the opportunities and challenges inherent to the deal under consideration. It speaks volumes that you shared with us your time and expertise in a deal you would not be involved in. More importantly, it shows the consummate professional you are to help a former client with no potential for ďŹ nancial gain. Your real estate expertise, energy and thoughtful style helped sell my Old City condo a few years back in a market that was not very robust. Both the buyer and I were pleased with the process and price that you negotiated as you did a perfect job balancing both of our ďŹ nancial goals. I must add that the gracious and competent support provided by your ofďŹ ce staff was also critical in helping smooth a sometime turbulent process. It is a pleasure to work with solid professionals like you and your ofďŹ ce staff. As a Professor of Management, I especially appreciate the integrity, sensitivity and dependability you have fostered in your real estate practice. I highly recommend the Conway Team to all my friends who are Rick Castaldi considering a home purchase or sale and know they will be in good hands.â€?
