o I need to thank the woman in line at Wegmans in Cherry Hill, N.J., for making racism funny again.

Thank you, for the chance to reďŹ&#x201A;ect on the fact racism isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t anything more than a stupid ideology passed down generation to generation and is still allowed to exist only courtesy of stupid people such as yourself.

Whew. OK, let me rewindâ&#x20AC;Ś Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m in line as a middle-aged white woman is unloading her groceries onto the conveyor belt. I think nothing of it as I pull my cart in behind hers walk around to the front and start unloading my goods onto the belt behind her. She sees me while sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still unloading her cart, runs around to the front of hers and quickly grabs her purse in the childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seat, slinging it over her shoulder before running back around to the front of her cart â&#x20AC;&#x201C; to continue unloading!

The cashier â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a young white male â&#x20AC;&#x201C; looks at me and looks at her, confused as I was at to what just happened. It was one of those Twilight Zone moments where I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sure what was happening, because I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to believe what just happened. She continued on like she didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just disrespect me, continuing to unload and subsequently pay for her groceries not looking up from the touchpad pay screen the entire time.

Yeah, awkward.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a long time since I experienced blatant, overt racism to my face like that.

I went to a predominantly white high 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

school, played soccer and had mostly white friends, so passive aggressive racially charged comments that assumed I should be able to run faster, jump higher and love fried chicken more than anyone else were just the norm given the climate. Generally, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d laugh it off through the side of my cheek, chalking it up to closed-minded young adults like me still not up to speed on the fact even though â&#x20AC;&#x153;weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re boys,â&#x20AC;? comments like those are still pretty fucking disrespectful.

This was different. Today, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re talking about a 30-something clean cut Black man in a plain T-shirt, jeans and Jack Purcells for Peteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sake. Hardly a frightening sight. But I wonder what I mustâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve looked like to her, Sully from Monsters Inc.? Shrek? The Beast from Beauty and the Beast?

And I really hope the Beast from new version, not the vintage Disney toon.

Who knows, and honestly, who really gives a shit, but I do know this. That moment served as a pivotal reminder that people of color are still given a second look. And the beneďŹ t of the doubt is there, I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know this womanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life, she couldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been mugged, accosted or assaulted and has post-traumatic stress.

I really hope so.

I have a young son, and this little guy loves everyone. He waves to everyone he meets, and at barely a year-old, doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t question why mommy is white and daddy is brown. I want it to stay that way, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not naive in thinking thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not going to be possible. All I can do as a parent and a person is recognize when people are being idiots, teach my kid to recognize when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s occurring but in return make sure you treat the moment with as much respect as youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d want in that moment.

Call it a rebranding for young victims of gun violence in Philly. In fact, say goodbye to â&#x20AC;&#x153;victimsâ&#x20AC;? for now. At the Lenfest Center on Aug. 11, those who have suffered from Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unending gun violence will celebrate their superhumanity. The event, titled â&#x20AC;&#x153;Superheroes Against Gun Violence,â&#x20AC;? asks everyone to come wearing their superhero costume, T-shirt or cape to take a stand against the carnage, and also to celebrate the young survivors. Some 94 juveniles were shot last year alone, according to police data. Come out and show your support to them and their families. The event is open to the public and runs from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Lenfest Center on North 10th Street. Q

Enough with the game delays Speaking of the Eagles, it turns out our fans are pissed off about those damn penalty ďŹ&#x201A;ags. According to a new J.D. Power survey, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the reason 13 percent of fans in the Philly-area market watched less football last season â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and some 18 percent said they attended fewer games at The Linc. Across the NFL, viewership dropped an average of 8 percent last season. While most fans nationwide cited the protests of the National Anthem (a la Kaepernick) as their reason for tuning out the game, Philly fans said it was the ďŹ&#x201A;ags and the (constant) instant replays. Police transparency Once an internal investigation has been completed, civilian complaints against the police are considered public records. But in Philly, they have long been shielded from the public eye and difďŹ cult to obtain â&#x20AC;&#x201D; even under requests ďŹ led through Pennsylvaniaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Right-to-Know Law. Spurred by the Black Lives Matter movement calling for more police accountability, watchdog news outlet The Declaration began compiling these complaints through public records requests last year. But now, under a new executive order signed by Mayor Jim Kenney, civilian complaints against the police will be posted online for the public beginning this fall. They will be redacted to protect personal information, but all in all, civil rights advocates call this a major step in the right direction.Q 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

f youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever heard or uttered the words, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sunlight is the best disinfectant,â&#x20AC;? youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll probably be glad to know its origins are as authoritative as authoritative can be.

The common adage was paraphrased from a line in a 1914 book of essays authored by Louis Brandeis, who would later become a U.S. Supreme Court justice.

Brandeis wrote: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Publicity is justly commended as a remedy for social and industrial diseases. Sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants; electric light the most efďŹ cient policeman.â&#x20AC;?

But in administering Pennsylvaniaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new medical marijuana program, the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Department of Health seems to have adopted the opposite philosophy for protecting it from potential harm. Secrecy was a practice and policy of the health department and many of its licensees throughout the recently concluded ďŹ rst phase of licensing.

The state received 457 applications for permits to grow and process or to dispense marijuana leading up to its March 20 deadline. The health department created a panel of state employees to score the applications on a 1,000-point formula. But the department did not reveal the panelistsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; identities â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and has said it will not reveal them â&#x20AC;&#x201C; to shield them from potential partisan inďŹ&#x201A;uence. The state hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even disclosed how many panelists there are or their expertise. $8*867

Redacted docs raise eyebrows in Pennsylvaniaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new medical marijuana program

On June 20, the department awarded the ďŹ rst 12 grower/processor licenses to applicants across the state. Nine days later, it awarded the ďŹ rst 27 dispensary licenses, including two in Northeast Philadelphia and ďŹ ve more within ďŹ ve miles of the Northeast. Together, those seven account for more than one-fourth of all dispensary licenses awarded statewide. Both lists are posted on the health departmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s website.

The state expects dispensaries to begin operations next year.

Residents of the Bustleton and Parkwood sections were shocked to learn of the anonymous panelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decisions. There were no public meetings in those communities about speciďŹ c applications. Applicants were not required to brief neighbors on their plans. In Bustleton, one applicant contacted the local civic group but didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t reveal where his company wanted to open a dispensary. In the Parkwood siteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s case, the applicant didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t contact leaders of the local civic association at all.

Soon after the dispensary sites were announced, the health department posted the winning companiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; applications on its public website. But folks seeking to glean more information about the licensees via those dozens of 240-page documents were sorely disappointed to learn that much of the potentially vital and locally relevant information had been redacted â&#x20AC;&#x201C; blacked out â&#x20AC;&#x201C; from the volumes of paperwork. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of people were calling me and knocking on my door after this came out that a dispensary was going to be at Frank-

lin Mills,â&#x20AC;? said John DelRicci, vice president of the Parkwood Civic Association. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They had a lot of questions and I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t answer the questions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re really concerned and upset about what kind of trafďŹ c this is going to bring in and what type of people. And theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re concerned how the community is going to turn. Is this going to be a good thing or a bad thing? They were very upset with this company coming in with no transparency, no communications with the residents.â&#x20AC;?

State lawmakers who created and legislated the Medical Marijuana Act of 2016 have been treated no differently. Rep. Martina White, whose district includes the planned site of one licensed dispensary, said she is among several House members who have contacted the Health Department seeking information about licensees and the evaluation process. White is still awaiting a response. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The bill has stated that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a public record, that the information will be shared with the public,â&#x20AC;? White said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The bill also says that applications will be subject to the Right to Know Law...I would say the purpose of the bill was to make the process as smooth as possible with public transparency while protecting the integrity of the process and sensitive information.â&#x20AC;?

Those who want to read the act can do so on the Department of Healthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s website.

The law includes 21 chapters and 89 sections.

Illinois-based PharmaCann Penn LLC won a license to open a dispensary at 599 Franklin Mills Circle, a vacant commercial property once occupied by a Chi Chiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s restaurant on the perimeter of Philadelphia Mills. Unlike other licensees, PharmaCann sought to open only the one location. State law allows for licensees to operate up to three dispensaries in separate counties.

In Bustleton, Haverford Townshipbased Holistic Pharma LLC was awarded a license to operate a primary dispensary at 8900 Krewstown Road, as well as secondary dispensaries in West Norriton, Montgomery County and Bensalem Township, Bucks County. The Bensalem site is 4201 Neshaminy Blvd., 4.3 miles driving distance from the Philadelphia Mills site.

According to health department spokeswoman April Hutcheson, there was no explicit requirement for applicants to notify or meet with community groups during the application process, although â&#x20AC;&#x153;community impactâ&#x20AC;? was considered by the panel in scoring all applications. The community impact category accounted for one-10th of

the 1,000-point formula. Holistic Pharma scored 57.5 in the category, while PharmaCann scored 62.5. The state has refused to disclose how the panel arrived at those point totals for individual applicants.

Hutcheson said applicants were required to submit a document or letter from the local zoning authority stating a marijuana dispensary is a legal use for the location identiďŹ ed in the application.

The Krewstown Road and Franklin Mills Circle sites are both zoned for commercial use already. So under Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s code, the dispensaries are permitted under the code as a matter of right.

According to City Councilman Brian Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Neill, when it became clear that Harrisburg lawmakers were going to pass a medical marijuana bill, Council passed an ordinance deďŹ ning growing and processing businesses as well as dispensaries as commercial activities. Council also modiďŹ ed the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s location restrictions to agree with superseding state law. For example, marijuana facilities cannot be within 1,000 feet of a school or child day care center.

About a dozen constituents have contacted Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Neillâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ce to lodge complaints since the health department announced the dispensary sites. Typically, he doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hear from people when they support a new business so heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not sure if thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a consensus. People who want to learn more about the Bustleton site and the program in general can attend a meeting at American Heritage Federal Credit Union, 2060 Red Lion Road, on Wednesday, July 26, at 7 p.m. A physician and executive from Holistic Pharma are scheduled to address neighbors.

As for extensive redactions seen in most of the posted applications, Hutcheson said the applicants did most of the censoring. As part of the process, they were instructed to submit a completed application and a selfredacted application simultaneously before the March 20 deadline.

Applicants were instructed to redact anything that would be classiďŹ ed private under the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Right to Know Law, such as Social Security numbers, home addresses, personal telephone numbers and bank information, for executives and employees.

They were also instructed to redact information regarding site security plans and anything they considered proprietary, the health department spokeswoman said.

Drawing SEPTA? Get Permission In Toronto, the transit authority encourages riders to create public art.

ive hundred miles from Philadelphia, on Torontoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s transit system, ordinary riders create public art.

Some are artists, others are their models, and thanks to an initiative called Sketching the Line, the best of the artworks they $8*867

Back home, I asked Carla Showell-Lee, the director of media relations at SEPTA, what the the transit authority thought of the initiative. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a very â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;sketchyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; (pun intended) but interesting topic,â&#x20AC;? Showell-Lee wrote in an email.

The Philly regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s transit authority has been promoting public art for the last decade through its Art In Transit initiative.

It has also brightened up rail cars with the help of the Mural Arts Program. But most of the existing transit artworks are permanent or semi-permanent installations at stations, loops and on platforms, which are commissioned through SEPTAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s capital development program.

When it comes to less formal, even spontaneous artmaking, SEPTA gets squeamish. The authorityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s policy restricts most kinds of public performance that could be perceived as an invasion of privacy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We actually do not permit performance art, panhandling, leaďŹ&#x201A;eting, photography, etc. inside vehicles operating in revenue service because SEPTA believes its customers are entitled to the privacy of their time when they are riding the system,â&#x20AC;? Showell-Lee wrote. â&#x20AC;&#x153;SEPTA does

not support anyone being drawn without their permission.â&#x20AC;?

Acapella groups, freestyle rappers, subterranean dance troupes, impromptu buskers, quiet sketch artists â&#x20AC;&#x201D; whether asking for money or not, they are more than likely breaking SEPTAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rules under this generic blanket policy, and thus subject to a ďŹ ne. SEPTA does ticket riders for panhandling, hustling wares, and similar acts, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unclear how many are ďŹ ned for something like singing for donations or live sketching without permission.

From the drawing perspective at least, it seems to us like a frivolous policy. Even if another rider gives their permission to be drawn, Showell-Lee said she was concerned about coercion. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Even if the artist does â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and they ask the customer to sign a release - I would imagine that in itself might be an intrusion â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the customer may not want to be sketched but may feel intimidated about saying no,â&#x20AC;? Showell-Lee added.

SEPTA has photography adorning the walls of its subway stops. However, its trains are a different story. produce are exhibited on posters throughout the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s transit system for roughly 1.8 million weekday riders.

I encountered Sketching the Line, a collaboration between the Toronto Transit Commission and PATTISON Outdoor Advertising, on a recent trip to Ontario, and saw a number of the large-scale drawings while getting lost in the city. The submission guidelines were simple: Drawings must have been created on the transit system, and should ideally reďŹ&#x201A;ect Torontoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s diversity. Artists send in their best drawings during an open submission period, which are then judged and selected by transit authority employees.

Rider-generated artwork and exhibitions â&#x20AC;&#x201D; why not have this on SEPTA in the Philly region?

It would be refreshing company next to the ads for personal injury attorneys and UPenn drug studies that seemingly populate the walls of every subway car.

Maybe itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d even invite more tourists to use our public transit system. (Toronto is still phasing out tokens up north, so weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d have that in common, too.)

Green Philly recently held its second annual SustainPHL awards, honoring those working behind the scenes and under the spotlight in a quest to make Philadelphia a more sustainable metropolis. The awards recognized scores of people and programs across nine categories.

In partnership with Green Philly and SustainPHL, took a deeper dive into some of the nominees and winners of the event. The pairing of the Sustainable Business Network and The GREEN Program were on the list of instrumental outlets in Philly making a difference in their own right.

Election fever comes early With a sleepy November general election, political hopefuls are testing the waters for next yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s primary election

ovemberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s general election in Philly has the looks of a sleeper. Given the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s voter registration odds, the insurgent Democratic nominees in the two higher proďŹ le races â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Larry Krasner for district attorney and Rebecca Rhynhart for city controller â&#x20AC;&#x201C; will likely coast to victory against their minority party challengers.

But in the midst of this political lull, candidates are jumping in the ring for next year when a spate of state and national legislators from Philly are up for reelection.

State Rep. John Taylor, one of two Republican politicians representing Philly in Harrisburg, will likely face off against a familiar face next year â&#x20AC;&#x201C; one among the growing list of contested PA House elections next year.

Democrat Joe Hohenstein said heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inching toward a rematch with Taylor, a three-decade incumbent whose district covers parts of the River Wards and the lower Northeast. At a community event in Frankford last weekend, Hohenstein told a reporter another race is likely in the cards for him. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t 100 percent made a decision, but I think I will,â&#x20AC;? Hohenstein said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There will be a more formal announcement around Labor Day. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m deďŹ nitely leaning toward it. The neighborhoods need some $8*867

thing different. They keep getting more of the same.â&#x20AC;?

Last year, Hohenstein, an immigration lawyer, took nearly 45 percent of the vote against Taylor, who was ďŹ rst elected in 1984. Hohenstein won four of the districtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seven wards, but Taylor won by more than 2,600 votes.

Hohenstein ran unopposed in last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s primary, but might not have that luxury next year: Sean Patrick Wayland, a young Iraq War veteran and aspiring legislator, is also expected to seek the Democratic nomination. Wayland already launched a Crowdpac to start seeding his campaign.

A SOUTH PHILLY MELEE? Taylor likely wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be the only long-seated incumbent to face opposition next year.

A showdown is brewing against longtime Rep. Bill Keller in the 184th House District, which covers the eastern half of South Philadelphia. City&State PA has reported two potential challengers to date: Nicholas DiDonato, Jr., a retired police detective, and Elizabeth Feidler, a former WHYY reporter.

On Monday, Tom Wyatt, a corporate attorney at Dilworth Paxon who ran in 2015â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s crowded at-large City Council race, conďŹ rmed to Philly Weekly that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also exploring a run for the 184th race next year.

In Center City, former Senate aide Ben Waxman conďŹ rmed intentions for a rematch against Rep. Brian Sims next year, according to City&State PA. Following a contentious 2016 campaign, Sims triumphed over Waxman by just 6 percent of the vote. Following news of Waxman challenging him again, Sims responded with a jab on his widely-followed Facebook page that referenced a photo in which Waxman posed with Eric Trump.

Of even higher stakes, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a poten-

tial rumble in the works for U.S. Rep. and Democratic City Committee Chairman Bob Brady. Brady came under ďŹ re recently after news broke that a staffer from his 2012 campaign had pleaded guilty to bribing Bradyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s then-rival to drop out of the race.

Omar Woodard, a popular nonproďŹ t executive who has dabbled in past political campaigns, said he is weighing a bid against the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top Democrat, according to Philadelphia magazine. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If we want better government, we have to elect better leaders,â&#x20AC;? Woodard said in a statement. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll make a decision in the next few weeks after talking with close friends and family.â&#x20AC;?

Woodardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s position is not uncommon. It is early, and at this stage, many would-be candidates are still in the consultation phase â&#x20AC;&#x201C; talking with their advisors, and perhaps even conducting internal polls to gauge their chances at victory.

There are a number of additional pols in Philly â&#x20AC;&#x201C; from Rep. Rosita Youngblood to state Sen. Christine Tartaglione â&#x20AC;&#x201C; who are up for reelection next year, and may see challengers emerging from the shadows in the coming months. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get me wrong: May is 70, Taylor, 68, and these guys still play thundering glam-metal as if they invented it (wait, they did). May, in particular, unleashed some of the most coolly emotive, innovative solos heard since King Crimsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s peak. Too often though, they played to Lambert as frontman (which is natural), rather than him following the founders. And on the crunching rockers, Lambert just didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the heft, the gravitas and, quite frankly, the balls of Freddie. Still, Lambert was mostly a dream crooner and carouser with May and Taylor acting as outstanding legends, refusing to lie still. Who wants to live forever? These guys should. They just need to recalibrate.

Looking back at a week that was great classic tunes here in Philly

T

he history of, and love for, Queen in Philly is as rich as it is long. Like David Bowie, who made his bones as Ziggy Stardust in Philly before the rest of the United States, the glam-metal Queen ďŹ lled our most dramatic venues â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the Schubert Theater in May 1974, the Erlanger in February 1975 and the Tower for three nights of A Night at the Opera in 1976 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; before making fame for itself elsewhere. With that comes a separate passion for Freddie Mercury, the daring, neooperatic crooner who died tragically from AIDS complications in 1991.

If Bowie was a god to Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s glam kids, Mercury was a saint.

So then, Philly takes its Queen seriously, and seems easily accepting toward Adam Lambert, the now-35-year-old, one-time American Idol contestant who appeared as Queen/Adam Lambert at a recent sold out Wells Fargo Center show. Stopping at the tip of a runwayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stage to consider the 40th anniversary of the bandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s News of the World (the 1977 album that gives this tour its theme and Metropolis-like robot props) Queen original Brian May talked about the Philadelphia of 40 years ago, and how great it was to return to such warmth. $8*867

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s incredible that you guys are here to see us,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Now with original Queen founders May and Roger Taylor for six years, Lambert has little left to prove â&#x20AC;&#x201C; he can certainly tackle the athletic highs of Mercuryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and that late vocalistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s physical theatrical espirit. Pronouncedly, Lambert claimed repeatedly that he is no Freddie Mercury and, thankfully, made no real attempts to mimic his masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s voice, instead, making Queenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s catalog his own. Funny thing is â&#x20AC;&#x201C; after having witnessed this pairing ďŹ rst (and better) in Atlantic City in 2014 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; there are good things and bad things about Lambertâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s newfound appropriation and the rest of the Queen brain-trustâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s complicity therein.

Looking like Waylon Flowers & Madame with a punkish haircut, Lambert icily tore through â&#x20AC;&#x153;Somebody to Loveâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Who Wants to Live Forever,â&#x20AC;? the latter with such cunning, clarity and stunning range, your jaw dropped. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t Stop Me Now,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Under Pressureâ&#x20AC;? (a handsome duet with drummer Taylor mimicking Bowieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s baritone), â&#x20AC;&#x153;I Want to Break Freeâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Radio Gagaâ&#x20AC;? were equally lovely and showed off Lambertâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pop dynamics well. Yet, it was the dark, epic rockers â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the sexy, sinister likes of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Get Down,

y boyfriend of eight months, K, and I are polyamorous. We started the relationship on that foot, and for a while I was the partner he spent the most time with. There have been ups and downs, but overall our relationship is solid and loving. However, recently we both started dating the same woman, L, and they have been spending more time together than with me due to my work schedule. They both reassure me that they love me and care for me deeply, but I am an anxiously-attached person and sometimes I have panic attacks when they spend more time with others/themselves and fear that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to leave me. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m working on becoming more secure via books on cognitive behavioral therapy, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m looking into in-person therapy. This is my ďŹ rst serious relationship, but not his (Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m 22, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 35). And while K has been super patient with me, my worry and grasping is a point of friction in the relationship. K has told me he doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to be solely responsible for my sexual satisfaction and my need for constant reassurances that he cares. The anxiety has been ďŹ&#x201A;aring up most strongly concerning sexâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all switches, and K and L are both professional Dominants. I feel neglected if K doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t penetrate me but he penetrates L, or if L gets to penetrate K via a strap-on and I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m always suspicious when two (or more) people claim to be deeply in love after dating for a short period of time, BELOVED, and eight months qualiďŹ es as a short period of time. Premature declarations of loveâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;to say nothing of premature commitmentsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;up the emotional stakes, which can place a strain on a newish relationship (or a trio of them) that it may not be strong enough to bear. Not yet.

Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll feel a lot less anxious about this relationship, BELOVED, if you make a conscious effort to lower the stakes. In other words: Dial it way back, girl.

Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been dating K for a little more than half a year, and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been dating L for whatever â&#x20AC;&#x153;recentlyâ&#x20AC;? adds up to in a world where eight months equals LTR. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll reduce your anxiety levels and soothe your insecurities if you tell yourself you arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t committed to K and L as life partners. Not yet. This is the beginning of both these relationships. All youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re committed to right now is continuing to get to know K and L. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re committed to dating them, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re committed to exploring where this might go, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re committed to enjoying your time with them, however long it lasts.

But you are not committed to them. Either of them. Not yet.

Committing yourself to therapy is a good idea, BELOVED. Everyone should commit to working on their emotional and mental health. You and your therapist can start by reevaluating whether a poly relationship is right for you in practice. In theory, you understand poly and you may want a poly relationship. (Particularly if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the only way you can have K.) But as someone with anxiety issues and hang-ups about all sex acts being divided up equally, poly may not be right for you, or it may not be right for you right now. After a little therapy (or maybe a lot), who knows?

(Also: Trying to portion out sex between three people like you would ice cream for three small kidsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;making sure each kid gets the exact same number and size of scoopsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;is unrealistic. Sometimes youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll get more; sometimes youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll get less. Eyeing those scoops too closely is only going to generate conďŹ&#x201A;ict.)

Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been at this rodeo for only eight months, BELOVED, and if these problems are already coming up, it might not be your attachment style or your anxiety.
