igital media. Oversaturation of content. Bloggers. True journalism, the kind that still makes you think, that still provides education based on in-depth reporting has taken a backburner to whatever some content monkey can pound out and post before another content monkey does it ďŹ rst. It’s sad that very few things that you’ll read now a days has very little substance or backstory It’s no one’s fault, it’s just been the way we’ve decided to consume news. We’ve made shorter characters and a click through to learn more become the norm and honestly the standard. But it’s those stories, the kind you read and can tell a writer spent a ton of time on, speaking to multiple sources, reading over pages of documents, following up on emails, phone calls, coffee dates to get the truth, those are the ones that matter. We had a story like that last November, where we exposed these sheisty energy companies, that hide behind the guise of being state regulated [in this case by the Pennsylvania Utility Commission] but have door-to-door salespeople promising cheaper rates but neglecting to mention all the hidden associated costs over time. Despite a lengthy process of gathering a ton of info, we didn’t hear much in the aftermath of that story running. I received few emails of people sharing their stories and a follow up from the energy company that accused me of holding back some of the conversation [which was later quelled], but apart from that nothing. Until this email just last week on July 30, nearly six months after that story ran: Mr. Gabriel, I just want to say, this article saved me from one of these door-to-door switcheroos. 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

He was in the middle of that ‘veriďŹ cation’ call from my home phone when it ran out of batteries – a lucky happenstance that gave me time to think. It was around that time when I had started becoming suspicious of the bum rush, so I told him I needed to check on something. I ran inside to run a quick web-search and found your article. Just the ďŹ rst two paragraphs were a perfect template for what was happening to me, and I called the deal off then and there (after much debate with him, of course). Note that I’m in the SF Bay area, nowhere near Philly, but I still found your article a big help. Surely, I owe you something. I don’t see a way to donate directly to the Weekly, so I’m trying to ďŹ nd an area charity that I can give to via Paypal (let me know if you have a suggestion). Thanks again for a great public service. – Reed Knight, Bay Area, California Ask any journalist and they’ll tell you. It’s emails like these why we do what we do. We give a shit about our communities and the citizens in those communities. It’s not about who has it ďŹ rst, it’s about who has it best because nine times out of 10, it’s the one that has it best is the one that truly makes the intended impact of writing about it in the ďŹ rst place. Legal light show? Though hard to believe from a rooftop in North Philly on July 4, ďŹ rework sales have been illegal in Pennsylvania for more than 80 years. But a new bill in the Pennsylvania legislature could change that. To balance the budget and add $3 million a year to the state’s coffers, Harrisburg legislatures are looking to expand a 2004 law that would allow the sale of ďŹ reworks to in-state residents. Finally. If it passes, that’ll be the end of those trips south of the border with your crazy oneeyed Uncle Jimmy. Q

The Brady buyout

Gram the stoop Tweet of the week When you casually ďŹ shing along the banks of the Schulykill in Center City and you pull out this monstrosity, naturally, you tweet it. Q $8*867

The Instagram of the week award goes to @stoop_phenomena_, an account dedicated to documenting the wonderful diversity of Philadelphia’s stoop culture. Local artist Kaitlin Pomerantz started the account with an eye towards both the aesthetic and the theory of those steps that seemingly deďŹ ne the city. “The stoop is literally the thing that people walk on to get into their home: a threshold between interior and public space,â€? Pomerantz told Billy Penn. Give this one a follow. Q

U.S. Rep. Bob Brady’s 2012 reelection campaign has come back from the dead. According to federal prosecutors, Brady’s team secretly paid some $90,000 to a political rival to drop out of the race. An aide to Brady’s former challenger pleaded guilty to the payoff, but Brady was not charged with a crime. Brady, who has chaired the Democratic City Committee for 30 years, claimed ignorance to the buyoff. Pressed for comment by the Inquirer, he threw his campaign team under the bus: “They did all that. That’s ďŹ ve years ago. Rebuild, explained The no-nonsense guide to Philly’s massive, $500 million initiative to rebuild its public parks, rec centers and libraries BY MAX MARIN

Y

ou’ve probably seen it in the headlines. You’ve probably scratched your head a bit. (We did too, at ďŹ rst.) But fret not: PW spoke with city ofďŹ cials and read everything that’s been already written about the city’s massive, halfbillion dollar initiative known as Rebuild, and we’re here to break it down for you. Rebuild. Explain it to me like I’m 5. And quickly, please. Over the next seven years, the city plans to spend $500 million to improve the city’s ailing parks, playgrounds, libraries, recreation facilities and other sites of community infrastructure. Rebuild is the brainchild of Mayor Jim Kenney. It makes up one key part of his administration’s antipoverty agenda along with universal pre-K and community schools, with emphasis on the city’s historically disinvested neighborhoods. I get the gist. Just catch me up to speed on where we’re at now. After months of negotiations, City Council came to an agreement over labor provisions with the Kenney administration and the building trades unions, allowing the government to move forward with its ďŹ rst bond. The ďŹ rst projects will be announced by the end of the year. The end. OK, but how is this being funded? Rebuild will be paid for in part by Kenney’s sugar-sweetened beverage levy, better known as the soda tax, which went into $8*867

effect in January. The city plans to take out $300 million in bonds, which will be paid back over time with soda tax revenues. Various foundations are expected to throw in another $100 million to $150 million, and the remainder will hopefully come from city and state grants, although none of those have been secured to date, according to Kenney’s Rebuild team. Only $8 million has been set aside from the city’s budget. Wait, I heard the soda tax isn’t generating as much revenue as initially projected. Will a long-term shortfall affect the city’s ability to pay off these bonds? “We don’t think so, but it’s really too early to tell,â€? said Rebuild’s executive director Nicole Westerman. The city plans to stagger its bond issuing at two-year intervals. Westerman says it will be some time before the debt begins to accumulate to an alarming level. The bond strategy is also very conservative, Westerman notes, and the city’s ďŹ nance director would not issue the bonds if there was a high risk of default. So, we’re talking about half a billion dollars here. How’s Rebuild going to spend it? There are 406 potential city-owned sites that could see Rebuild improvements. These include parks, rec centers, libraries, playgrounds and sites with a mixture of all the above. Not all of those sites will see improvements from Rebuild, however. Most likely the initiative will impact somewhere between 150 and 200 sites, and improvements will range from cosmetic changes to

the construction of new buildings. Kenney has a six-member staff to manage Rebuild, whose salaries total more than $500,000 annually. But the lion’s share of the half-billion dollar budget will go directly to contractors who are carrying out the improvements to city facilities. For that reason, there’s been a lot of emphasis on who’s actually performing the labor. What has been the major drama with Rebuild so far? During negotiations with Kenney and the labor unions, City Council’s main sticking point was workforce diversity — namely, making sure the workers on the jobsites reect the city’s population. This was of particular concern given much of the labor would be going to the predominantly white and suburban building trades unions. But Council also jockeyed with the Kenney administration for power over the projects themselves. So what are the diversity and project oversight agreements that have been reached? Rebuild has promised to ensure 45 percent of the workers on Rebuild sites consist of minority laborers: 27 percent AfricanAmerican, 14 percent Hispanic, 3 percent Asian. A certain number of contracts must go to minority- and women-owned businesses, as well. Before signing off on the ďŹ nal legislation, council members also jockeyed for more power over the project itself. The ďŹ nal agreement grants City Council two appointees (as well as the chair of the Parks and Recreation Committee) on the Rebuild oversight board. Council will also have the last word on both Rebuild’s annual budget as well as veto power on the ďŹ nal list of Rebuild sites selected by the administration. How will this be any different than all the other times the building trades promise to diversify? Who’s going to enforce these agreements? Indeed, distrust of the building trades unions runs deep. The pledge to diversify their workforce, especially for publicly funded projects, is all too familiar. Of the agreement, one diversity advocate told City&State PA that “if John Dougherty is happy with it, it’s a lousy agreement.â€? However, by way of checks and balances, Rebuild will be contracting with “independent monitors.â€? These third-party entities will be out in the ďŹ eld to ensure the work being performed meets the standards of the agreement, and not just with regard to workforce diversity. If the third-party monitor’s recommendations are not met by the contractor, Westerman says there is a clause in the legislation that will allow intervention by Kenney

and/or the district council member where the project is taking place. Worst case scenario, the legislation allows the contract to be terminated if the contractor fails to meet the agreement. Will the unions have a monopoly on all this labor? Not all. As it stands, there are two tiers for labor contracting. Rebuild projects more than $3 million must go through union shops. Any budget under that $3 threshold benchmark can be given to nonunion contractors. The idea here is that more female- and minority-owned businesses will have a slice of the work. Some simple projects may be performed by the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority or the Philly Parks & Recreation staff. How will the contractors be selected? Rebuild will be operating under a new “project userâ€? structure — a signiďŹ cant departure from the city’s traditional contracting process through its procurement ofďŹ ce and its charter-mandated “low bidâ€? contracting policy. Only nonproďŹ t organizations can apply to be “project usersâ€? for Rebuild. If selected, qualiďŹ ed nonproďŹ ts will then be awarded grants through Rebuild for up to $5 million. Project users then use the grant money to subcontract everything from design to construction for Rebuild projects. As PlanPhilly noted, this model could complicate diversity and inclusion goals. That’s where the third-party monitors are supposed to come in. Westerman added that the city’s capital program may be used to ďŹ nance some projects as well. In this case, contracts would be awarded through the city’s procurement ofďŹ ce rather than the project user system. How can companies apply for contracts through Rebuild improvements? Usually, vendors apply through the city’s procurement ofďŹ ce. Under Rebuild’s project user model, potential vendors can stay abreast of contracting opportunities through the Rebuild website, or by signing up for email updates. Will the parks and rec centers in my neighborhood be getting any of this Rebuild love? It’s too early to tell. The ďŹ rst improvement sites will be announced before the end of the year, according to Westerman and David Gould. New projects will be announced annually, meaning we won’t know the total reach of the initiative for years to come. So who do I blame if my neighborhood park gets overlooked? We’ll leave that question to the Mayor’s ofďŹ ce. Q TWITTER: @MAXMMARIN

ur highly embraces his unpredictability. In an era replete with mumble rappers and carbon copies, Kur (pronounced core) says his music is unique because fans never truly know what side of the rapper they are going to get. “You don’t know how I’m coming, Kur, whose real name is XXXXX told PW recently. “You don’t know the tone, if it’s going to be a harmony or if it’s going to be grimy. We live for the unpredictable and the unexpected. And that sentiment couldn’t be truer. A quick YouTube search of the Philly emcee’s name will land you with a mixed bag of freestyles and music videos of songs that range from hard-hitting lyrical bangers to stirring introspective anthems. On some tracks he delivers unforgettable soul-wrenching bars and on others, he sings. It’s apparent he plays both sides extremely well. In just the few years that he’s been rapping, his fan base has swelled immensely. His latest project, 180, was released in May and has garnered thousands of downloads online. The 11-track project features appearances from the likes of fellow Philly-emcee Chynna and L.A. rapper Casey Veggies. Despite the positive feedback following the release of the project, Kur, 23, surprisingly revealed that he didn’t even like the tape when he $8*867

put it out to the masses. “I have a problem where if I hear a record too long, I don’t want to put it out because I want to redo things,â€? he said. “[And] I sat on it. All of the records that were on 180, they were all oldass records. They just came out at that time.â€? But Kur’s success was something that certainly didn’t come overnight. His childhood years were spent Uptown, uctuating from Vernon Road, Temple Road and Sharpnack Street. After his mom was incarcerated, he went to live with his dad, which offered him a more stable upbringing. When he reached his late teens, he was enticed by the street life, but he knew that he was meant to do something greater. Resistance returns as the sixth annual Blackstar Film Fest sets up shop in Philly.

“Art as a weapon Blackstar Film Festival preps for sixth year celebrating the finest in African-American cinema BY A.D. AMOROSI

I

n this, its sixth year, Philadelphia’s BlackStar Film Festival has become the go-to gathering for African-American cinema makers and cineastes in the movie marketplace. Not just because BlackStar’s founding CEO Maori Karmael Holmes hosts the illustrious likes of director-activist Ava DuVernay (Selma, A Wrinkle in Time) Aug. 5; but because the Philly fest welcomes local, national and international auteurs of color whose independently-produced work is often ignored outside BlackStar’s screens (or walls of the ICA, Lightbox Film Center, Drexel University’s Pearlstein Gallery and World Cafe Live where BS17 takes place). And stories like documentarian Stanley Nelson’s Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities, director Gabourey Sidibe’s Nina Simoneinspired The Tale of Four, Sabaah Folayan and Damon Davis’s Ferguson ick, Whose $8*867

Streets?, and BlackStar’s 60 additional ďŹ lms cannot be ignored. Ask Holmes – the founder of the festival, previously co-founder of the Black Lily Film & Music Fest – what she sees as the biggest changes and challenges to black ďŹ lm, and she’s pragmatic. “I’d be hesitant to speak generally about ďŹ lms directed by black people locally or internationally,â€? said Holmes. “I can say that for independent ďŹ lm in general, the prevalence of streaming on-demand services and the ubiquity of web series have opened up avenues of opportunity for a few folks that hadn’t been opened before. I also think that with the data of what people are actually watching in their homes and on their devices – versus an aggregate based on what some are watching – opened up revenue so to make new content like Insecure and Brown Girls. Ava DuVernay’s success is also hopefully indicative of a shift.â€? Beyond generalization, Holmes stated she and BlackStar are interested in con-

necting independent ďŹ lmmakers to audiences, “because such work is only seen in prestige festivals, and then often never gets in front of regular folks. We hope we’re providing a trusted platform that people will look to in order to ďŹ nd new voices... and support them.â€? New York auteur Nefertite Nguvu screened her coolly, complex tale of friends and interpersonal relationships, In the Morning, at BlackStar in 2014, and has been an active fan and participant since. “Partnerships like BlackStar are vital to independent ďŹ lmmakers like me; an incredible organization and an outstanding champion of global Black Cinema,â€? says Nguvu, whose short poetic ďŹ lms, The Last Two Lovers at the End of the World and Myself When I Am Real will be released before year’s end. This year, Nguvu hosts a panel, (R)epresentation: Designing the Black Body that examines the intricacies of designing and styling for moving images and exploring special considerations when designing for black actors and for black stories. (R)epresentation plays exquisitely into BlackStar’s overall theme of resistance. “They are cognizant of the political climate we are in and in the particular way that Black folks are affected and have made the selections about resistance in response,â€? notes Nguvu. “Art is a weapon, culture is a weapon. BlackStar is showcasing art that elevates us with a message of resistance. This is necessary; this is vital.â€? This year in particular (and certainly a worthwhile theme going forward), BlackStar’s frank focus is, as Nguvu states, “Resistance,â€? the examination of social, political, personal and mass uprisings, from the 60s to the present, from South African liberation ďŹ ghter Ashley Kriel, to rebel slaves battling with the British, to Black lesbian couples in Bed-Stuy practicing polyamorously. “Hands down that’s our most prevalent theme,â€? said Holmes. “Our senior program manager, Nehad Khader, noticed this as we were ďŹ nalizing the program. There are a lot of ďŹ lms about police/vigilante violence against black bodies and there are also quite a few romantic comedies with unconventional leads which is great.â€? Beyond social justice, Holmes noted the ďŹ rst time inclusion of a “geekâ€? section with ďŹ lms celebrating geek culture, with most of its ďŹ lms primarily from Philadelphia. “We have more ďŹ lms from Philly than we’ve had in recent years,â€? she said.

Louis A. Moore, the director and executive producer of Tales from Shaolin (and its various chapters like Pt 1: Shakey Dog) is but one of those Philly ďŹ lmmakers, hailing as he does from Kevin Hart’s North Philly. “Coming from this area, getting into ďŹ lmmaking – it was a passion of wanting to tell stories, be it verbal, written, acting,â€? Moore said. After working on shorts, features and such in LA and NYC, Moore brought his nuts-and-bolts knowledge to The Wu, RZA, GZA, ODB, et al. “Cinematically Wu-Tang has always had this underlying mythology surrounding them. Their sound and style is a mixture of ďŹ lms and music that inspired them to craft this Asian inuenced/hip hop/inner city world of spectacle and wonder. I mean where else can you ďŹ nd samurais, ninjas, dope boy’s, stick up kids, and hustlers?â€? Moore said. In creating Tales from Shoalin Pt 1: Shakey Dog, Moore stayed inspired by Tarantino, anime, vid games, mob ďŹ lms (Goodfellas, Scarface, Godfather) and such to explore, this, and eventually other areas of the Wu catalogue. With that, Moore has come to BlackStar looking for family and support, as well as a screening space. “The love and appreciation they have for ďŹ lmmakers is something I’ve yet to experience at other fests,â€? says Moore. “Doesn’t matter how accomplished you might be in this industry. Everyone at BlackStar goes out of their way to make you feel a part of the family. If it’s your ďŹ rst time or your 100th time there, you’ll just feel at place.â€? That familial feel – an air of openness and non-exclusivity – is exactly what makes BlackStar necessary in Maori Karmael Holmes’ eyes. “In Philadelphia, there’s no other way to see these ďŹ lms – it’s how the festival began. In a national/international sense, we’ve found ourselves becoming a place where artists who follow each other online get a chance to connect in person and deepen existing connections with each other and with audiences. We’re invested in building upon the legacy of previous generations and also working with emerging makers and that cross-generational atmosphere is super special,â€? Holmes said. Q BlackStar Film Festival | Aug. 3-6. Venues vary. For tickets, visit: blackstarfest.org

Same old, same old?

“It’s going well, but the day-to-day is hard. We’re understaffed and morale is low. The remaining leadership is still like-minded people so there hasn’t been much change in the culture.

– CURRENT MAZZONI STAFFER

In the wake of a scandal and firing of its CEO, how much has really changed at Philly’s largest LGBT health care facility? BY TIMAREE SCHMIT

M

ore than three months have passed since the removal of Nurit Shein as CEO of the Mazzoni Center, the only health-care provider in the Philadelphia area speciďŹ cally aimed to serve the LGBT community. On April 24, the Mazzoni Board of Directors announced both Shein and board president Jimmy Ruiz were asked to step down. The board’s decision was in response to a series of allegations that included cover ups of alleged sexual misconduct by former medical director Dr. Robert Winn. Allegations also included claims of endemic racial discrimination against staff, as well as a culture of secrecy and retaliation facilitated by the center’s leadership. Both Philadelphia Weekly and Philadelphia Magazine covered the story in the months prior to the transition, reporting on the initial calls for change by current and former employees, multiple employee walkouts and silent protests and, eventually, the board’s resolution. On July 10, Steve Glassman was announced as the interim CEO. In May, the clinic expanded its services by moving to a larger location on 1348 Bainbridge St., the culmination of years of planning and a $1.5 million relocation and renovation project. To examine the effects of the ouster, PW spoke to a number of key ďŹ gures involved in the previous stories as well as Glassman, Mazzoni’s interim CEO. How much has changed? Depending on whom you ask, the answer varies greatly. $8*867

Mazzoni employees were successful in protest efforts to have its former CEO and board president removed. However, those same staffers claim that change since the oust has been slow.

Black and Brown Workers Collective:

Led by former Mazzoni staff member Abdul-Aliy A. Muhammad, the BBWC were the activists initially calling for the removal of Winn and Shein. Muhammad was the ďŹ rst to go on record with accusations of wrongdoing by leadership and who, as an act of protest, refused to take their HIV treatment until Shein was removed. This is what he had to say regarding the BBWC’s stance on life at Mazzoni now: “We are especially focused on paying careful attention on Mazzoni Center’s current board decision-making and operations with a strong focus and concern on how the interim director will build trust and listen to staff, patients and community, as the board searches for a permanent CEO. The sacriďŹ ces made on the part of workers and community members must not be in vain. The removal of corrupt people in power does not ensure a shift in organizational policy and practices. The local government now has the power to shut down businesses that are found to have repeated incidents of racial bias. We will use all tools at our disposal for the purposes of continuing to push for progress. Lastly, there are many ways community members become experts and come to gain knowledge through their direct experiences that should put them in a position to become the next CEO of the Mazzoni Center. We intend to work from this place as we present names from the community to be considered for this permanent position. We demand that three or more community members, including frontline staff, trans community members and poz community members, be on the search committee for vetting and hiring the permanent [executive director]...we demand that the Board of Directors adhere to the staff demands presented to them previously and the demands of the P.R.I.D.E group at Mazzoni Center.â€?

Nurit Shein, former CEO of Mazzoni Center:

In an exclusive interview with Philly Gay News, on July 19, Shein claims employees were coerced and bullied into the walkouts that led to her ouster, claims she started the investigations of Winn, and describes her termination as “painful. PGN: What have you been up to since you left Mazzoni? NS: I kept planning for my retirement. I am leaving for Israel in mid-October for several months in order to buy an apartment in Tel Aviv. I’ve been keeping busy. I’ve been going to the gym a lot more than I did before. I’ve been traveling some, visiting family. Since I’m going to Israel, I’m not going to start any volunteering or anything major this summer but probably when I come back, I will do something.

Vicky Borgia, former Mazzoni physician

Borgia raised concerns about Winn as a threat to the organization and whose cardboard sign reading “I will get an outside auditor “and I will say that this concerns me as attributed to Nurit Shein, was featured on a Philadelphia Weekly story of the employee walkouts: “I am doing urgent care locums and trying to open my own DPC practice. I had my hair dyed professionally after the picture. But, I did feel pretty empowered again that I could affect change, which was nice.

Current Mazzoni employees:

Under condition of anonymity for fear of retribution a number of employees wished to remain anonymous: “It’s going well, but the day-to-day is hard. We’re understaffed and morale is low. The remaining leadership is still like-minded people so there hasn’t been much change in the culture. Some board members continue to perpetuate the lack of transparency. There was a new board member added and there was no announcement to staff, even that they were looking for someone. We’re still worried about losing our jobs. The city commission mandated changes but they haven’t responded to that besides giving an antiracism training, but none of the board participated. 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

“Although Nurit is gone, her mark on the culture of Mazzoni certainly lives on. I imagine a culture of top-down decision making that lacks transparency will continue until the COO, the board and hopefully the new CEO commit to a real shift in culture. The board recognizes the impact of staff’s actions but they don’t want to encourage us. They don’t want us to be empowered to speak up anymore. We just want a leader that can recognize the BS and help us move forward in a new way. Other than that we all moved into a new building in May. It’s pretty nice and modern...Also [despite what was reported] they didn’t actually ask staff members for recommendations for the interim staff position.

Mazzoni employees are building a pathway to enhanced fairness and equity through their expanded role with regard to our expanded diversity and inclusion efforts. For example, we are hiring four managers, three of whom will report directly to the CEO. Two of the positions are completely new. We are creating a separate education department which will expand our current programs and offerings for which we need an education director. In addition, and reporting directly to the CEO, we are adding an experienced professional who will lead Mazzoni’s diversity, inclusion, and professional development efforts. The third role is an upgrade of a previous management position to the senior staff level in the area of internal and external communications. Fourth, we are hiring a new medical director. Diverse committees of staff members “In response to rampant racism, sexism, are participating in interviews of manand transphobia that pushed out POC agement candidates and will provide the and/or staff and clients; CEO with their written in order to support the assessments of each of clear unrest and oppres“A diverse group of employthese new hires. Knapp says that, in the next few months, the city will release its ďŹ rst “Municipal Energy Master Plan,â€? which will detail how the municipality manages its energy footprint, as well another plan called “Citywide Energy Vision,â€? which will detail opportunities for both private and public sectors to meet the same energy goals.

Christine Knapp, director of Greenworks All politics is local. While the federal government under President Trump continues to distance itself from environmental commitments, cities like Philadelphia continue to make their own local pledges to reduce carbon emissions — speciďŹ cally those set in the Paris Climate Agreement. Mayor Jim Kenney’s OfďŹ ce of Sustainability hopes to continue the environmental advances set in motion by the past administration through the Greenworks program. Launched in 2009, the program provides a blueprint for Philly that can handle Philly’s “hotter, wetter futureâ€? — a comprehensive sustainability plan that covers of vast network of different sectors, from public transit to waste disposal. “With the lack of action at the federal level, it’s more important than ever that cities take the lead in ďŹ ghting to reduce carbon emissions and making sure we protect our residents against the impacts of a changing climate,â€? said Christine Knapp, the director of Greenworks. Greenworks most recent report from November 2016, “Greenworks: A Vision for Sustainable Philadelphia,â€? responds to residents’ concerns about the environmental health of the city and asks experts to

Soil Generation, formerly known as Healthy Green Food Spaces, is comprised of gardeners, farmers and community organizers who are seeking to build a “hyper-local urban food system throughout Philadelphia — particularly in disinvested communities of color. “We are working to build the cohesive, grassroots movement needed change all of these power dynamics. We are helping gardeners overcome these obstacles by combining our experiences, ideas and clout to build the radical movement needed to reform city policies, Soil Generation wrote in its application for the Sustainable Communities award. The black- and brown-led organization formed in 2011 to rally against a zoning amendment that would threaten some 20 percent of community farms across the city. University of Pennsylvania researchers had already sounded the alarm: Philadelphia’s community gardens were on the decline, from 501 gardens in 1996 to 275 gardens in 2008. Soil Generation says they successfully lobbied against the zoning amendment that would further ravage urban green spaces — particularly those in low-income neighborhoods. To date, the group has also been part of implementing Philadelphia’s Land Bank, which passed into law but has been slow to take off. Lauren Cohn, the chief vet and owner of Fishtown Animal Hospital likes to rage when she’s not saving the city’s animal population.

Raging animals

Fishtown Animal Hospital instrumental in recent hardcore rock festival BY LINDSEY NOLEN

S

eeking to â€œďŹ nd herselfâ€? as a teenager growing up in Washington, D.C., Lauren Cohn found solace in the hardcore punk music scene. Raised as a animal-loving vegetarian, the owner of the Fishtown Animal Hospital continues merging her passions for animal welfare and hardcore music by using her platform to sponsor the recent This Is Hardcore Fest that took place at the Electric Factory and Union Transfer. “The hardcore scene became a huge part of my life, beginning largely when I saw its overall support of animal rights,â€? Cohn said. “It was a positive community driven by acceptance and that could be fairly political with its promotion of certain issues. It helped me ďŹ nd myself when I was a kid, and I saw my ďŹ rst ofďŹ cial hardcore show in 1992.â€? 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

As a young child, Cohn, 41, remembers her mother’s vegetarianism and involvement in human rights initiatives, including acts such as rescuing squirrels that were hit by cars and taking them to rehab facilities. Through this impactful parental guidance, Cohn learned about where food came from and the ďŹ ght against animal cruelty, and sought to ďŹ nd a community of similar-minded peers who also loved and respected animals. In meeting and developing relationships with these like-minded hardcore community members within Philadelphia, Cohn established a group of friends. Included in this group, after meeting him while attending shows, was Joe “Joe Hardcoreâ€? McKay, the the face of Philadelphia’s This Is Hardcore Fest. As time passed, Cohn saw the This Is Hardcore Fest as an opportunity to merge the two communities that were most im-

portant to her: veterinary medicine and hardcore music. Thus, she decided to use her practice, which has been in operation since April 2015, to for the ďŹ rst time help sponsor the festival, which has been taking place since 2006, and in doing so has made a ďŹ nancial contribution toward the event and is assisting in its promotion. “We [sponsored] the whole event and one of the after shows as well,â€? Cohn, a 41-year-old Northern Liberties resident, said. “[In addition], the [Fishtown] Animal Hospital is offering 10 percent off exams when clients mention This Is Hardcore Now through Sept. 30.â€? As she continued her involvement in the scene upon moving to South Philly in 1995, Cohn decided to contribute to the community by organizing shows across the city. While she used many of these events as simultaneous fundraising opportunities and chances to raise awareness for the many animal welfare-related causes she supports, others were just so she could witness some of her favorite bands playing locally in Philadelphia. “It was great to see parents bringing their kids to the events with the big [noise eliminating] headphones,â€? Cohn said. “To me, the scene was a real community growing up, and it was ďŹ lled with positive messages while acting as an outlet through which myself and others could express ourselves.â€? She noted that, in addition to her goal of being the best veterinarian she can be, she also wishes to create a community of people among festival attendees and beyond who come to her with their pets and who feel as though they are all family. This desire to prove to her animal owning clients their relationship with herself and her practice can extend beyond comprehensive exams and scheduled appointments had lead to her This Is Hardcore Fest involvement. As people from near and far traveled to the festival, Cohn hopes to spread awareness to the masses on animal prevention and health care, while directly connecting with the community and potential clients. “As a kid I always wanted to be the musician who got on stage, but I realized that’s not me,â€? Cohn said. “Now I realize that my contribution to the the community rests as a healer and rescuer of animals, and I want to emphasize my passions for animal welfare by educating owners and outside connections to the community.â€? SAVAGE LOVE:

Crossed dressers and I derived more pleasure from this cross-dressing experience than having anonymous sex with an escort. My questions: Did I violate the hall pass? Was I wrong to cross-dress?

DAN SAVAGE

M

y wife has been seriously ill for three years, and I have been her sole caregiver. The doctors here weren’t getting the job done, so we made the difďŹ cult decision for her to move 2,000 miles away to start over and be near her family. Our sex life has been nonexistent since she became ill. She offered me a “hall passâ€? with two rules: (1) It couldn’t be anyone I worked with and (2) she didn’t want to know about it. She offered multiple times, but I was taking care of her 24/7 and never used it. I started to consider using it after she moved. But I didn’t want to just ďŹ nd some random person on Tinder. You see, I am a crossdresser. My wife knows. She’s never seen me dressed and isn’t interested in knowing more about it. So instead of paying for a traditional escort, I found someone who would dress me, do my makeup, go out to dinner with me, but no sex. We met three times. However, one time I did hire a trans woman who dressed me and we did have sex. Obviously, I had to lie at times about where I was when I was using my hall pass, but I considered it a white lie to meet Rule #2. But my wife ew home unannounced to get her things (with her ex-husband along to help) and found my clothes out and quickly got out of me what I had done. She was beyond pissed. She says I had a hall pass for sex but not cross-dressing. She belittled me for the cross-dressing and said the sex was supposed to be a one-and-done thing. She knew I was a cross-dresser, 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

– Dude Relishing Erotic Sexcapades Suddenly Entertaining Divorce P.S. I am quite convincing when dressed and blend well in public. Your wife went home to get well and “start over.â€? And it sounds like she got well—at least well enough to y—and started over with her ex-husband. I don’t think you were wrong to cross-dress, DRESSED, and if you violated that hall pass, it was only because your soon-to-be-ex-wife didn’t share all the rules with you until after you used it. It looks like a setup to me. Your soon-to-be-ex-wife gave you permission to fuck someone else— permission that came with rules that were disclosed and secret bylaws and codicils that were not—because, consciously or subconsciously, she wanted to catch you doing it wrong (in your case, DRESSED, doing it more than once, cross-dressing when you did it, etc.). Because now she can divorce you with a clear conscience, since she’s not to blame for the split—you and your dick and your dresses are to blame. You might want to brace yourself for some hardcore blaming and kinkshaming, DRESSED, and for the very real possibility she’ll out you as a cheat and a cross-dresser to family and friends. But however the divorce plays out—and here’s hoping it doesn’t get ugly—at least you’ll soon be free to ďŹ nd a partner you don’t have to hide your cross-dressing from.
