e our guest,â&#x20AC;? is not only applicable to â&#x20AC;&#x153;Beauty and the Beastâ&#x20AC;? and the hospitality business, but also to Broad Street Ministry, a Christianbased charity organization that provides basic needs such as food, clothing, and health-care to the needy. According to BSMâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Executive Director Michael Dahl, the organization refers to those who use its services as ďŹ rst and foremost â&#x20AC;&#x153;guestsâ&#x20AC;? by exercising â&#x20AC;&#x153;radical hospitality.â&#x20AC;? That is why when SoďŹ tel Philadelphia hotel and BSM partnered for a corporate fundraising campaign, Dahl thought â&#x20AC;&#x153;who better to join us in this effort than the hospitality industry.â&#x20AC;?

In honor of both Bastille Day and the progress the campaign has made, the French hotel, SoďŹ tel held a reception at its Chez Colette on July 13. The main event was a large-sized check made out to Broad Street Ministry for $2,773.

SoďŹ tel raised the money by allocating a percentage from certain banquet food items to BSM. The campaign has been in effect since April, but SoďŹ tel has volunteered for BSM at its church location for about two years. A group of 10 hotel employees goes on Wednesdays to serve hot meals, help with other activities, and â&#x20AC;&#x153;treat them like they are coming into the hotel,â&#x20AC;? said Angela Bauer, general manager of SoďŹ tel.

But after two years of volunteering, SoďŹ tel â&#x20AC;&#x153;thought what more can we do, what more can we do as a hotel,â&#x20AC;? said Bauer. The designated banquet items that go toward the campaign are listed for cli3+,//<:((./< &20

entele so the customers know their chosen selections are helping the nonproďŹ t organization. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[The clients] are getting something out of it too. Knowing that they are helping a community, our community of Philadelphia,â&#x20AC;? said Bauer who has been with the hotel for 17-years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The issues of poverty, of hunger, and of homelessness are not going to be addressed by the nonproďŹ t sector alone, it is not going to be addressed by government alone,â&#x20AC;? said Dahl who used to work at The Pew Charitable Trusts and has been with BSM for the past 14 months. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It really is going to take the best minds across the public and the private and the nonproďŹ ts sectors, coming together on creative solutions.â&#x20AC;? For Dahl, the partnerships with corporate organizations such as SoďŹ tel are â&#x20AC;&#x153;changing the narrativeâ&#x20AC;? and inspiring â&#x20AC;&#x153;other companies to do the same.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;It used to be that businesses in Philadelphia would look at the homeless or look at panhandling, and they would just complain,â&#x20AC;? Dahl explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Instead, SoďŹ tel is joining with others on our hospitality corporate council and saying â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;no, we want to be a part of the solution, we want to lean in on these issues, how can we use our talents to help address these issues.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

As to the future of the campaign, SoďŹ tel is only beginning its efforts. But fundraising for the hotel holds more of a symbolic weight than a dollar sign. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think it is about numbers. I think it is about building community, letting people get more aware of it, more collaborative with it,â&#x20AC;? said Bauer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I would love to keep the number going, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure it will be, we just started it.â&#x20AC;? Despite having one of the largest collections of colleges of any major city, according to a recent survey of the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most and least educated cities conducted by WalletHub, the Greater Philadelphia Region ranked No. 44 out of 150 cities polled. ome high tide, the jetty at the Philadelphia Marine Center ďŹ&#x201A;oats eyelevel with Morganâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pier. Boats on one side, a bar on the other. The poppy waterfront beer garden doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t much bother Mike Nuzzo on his 40-foot Silverton yacht, the Queen Mary, although he says he gets complaints sometimes.

Is the Queen Mary blocking your waterfront view? The Queen Mary is the view, as far as Nuzzo is concerned. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This marinaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only here to give Dave & Busterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and Morganâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pier something to look at,â&#x20AC;? he jokes.

The Queen Mary is its own party, too. Onboard the boat are a commercial ice maker, a mini-fridge stocked with Budweiser, and a two-bedroom suite below deck that rivals some Old City apartments. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happy hour on a humid Wednesday night, and Nuzzo is greeting his marina neighbors on D Dock with frozen margaritas as they come â&#x20AC;&#x153;homeâ&#x20AC;? from work. On Saturday nights, the festivities and noise on D Dock rival those of the bar.

Nuzzo and his wife Maryann â&#x20AC;&#x201D; thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s right, she says, the boatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s named after her â&#x20AC;&#x201D; are in their fourth year at the Philadelphia Marine Center, one of four marinas that hug either side of the Ben Franklin Bridge. What started as a summer obsession for the couple has turned into a year-round lifestyle. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re one of a few hundred folks who call the waterfront â&#x20AC;&#x153;homeâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and amid interest from Manhattan real estate giants as well as major municipal projects like the plan to cap I-95 with a park, they consider themselves in the front-row seat of the waterfrontâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best years yet.

From South Street to Spring Garden, the central Delaware is headed for a fairly radical transformation over the next decade. The Durst Organization, which has one of New York Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most powerful real estate portfolios, recently purchased a large swath of the marina real estate, including the Marine Center, Morganâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pier and Dave & Busters. Durst reportedly has an eye toward waterfront apartments, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s too early to tell how the new development could affect life on the docks.

For now, marina life is good.

Conventional wisdom holds that waterfront living is a privilege of the rich.

At the newly opened One Water Street development that overlooks the marina, one-bedroom apartments are renting for $1,815 a month. But down on the marina, all are welcome to rent monthly slips for as low a few hundred bucks a month.

All you need a boat â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and any size will do. The top tax bracket and the working class mingle. Philly homicide detectives, steamďŹ tters and a university doctors are neighbors. Nuzzo runs a home improvement company in New Jersey. Chuck â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dieselâ&#x20AC;? Maguire is a carpenter and a boxing trainer in Kensington.

Lumbering down the quay toward his slip, Maguire points out the other boats with the campy names like Chill Factor and Half Moon and Four Juliaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. Every boat is a person.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;This guy,â&#x20AC;? Chuck says, pointing to a glimmering unused yacht. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of the greatest people youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll ever meet in your life.â&#x20AC;?

For $4,700 â&#x20AC;&#x201D; or about $392 a month â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Maguire gets to keep his 38-foot Searay docked for the entire year. That includes electricity, water, cable television, Wi-Fi, and the most coveted of all Philadelphia prizes: an off-street parking spot.

Amenities vary depending on the marina, but utilities are always included with the affordable rent. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is the getaway,â&#x20AC;? Maguire says, before pointing to the riverside condos. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re paying $1,800 a month to look at me and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m paying $400 to look at what they want to be looking at.â&#x20AC;?

While Maguire has a home in the Somerton neighborhood, about 20 boaters at the marine center are more, shall we say, permanent residents. City zoning laws bar people from full-time residency on a boat, but enforcement isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t much of an issue. (â&#x20AC;&#x153;What are they gonna do â&#x20AC;&#x201D; bed checks?â&#x20AC;? Maguire asks.) For Maguire, this is a place to entertain friends for cigars and ďŹ shing.

He spends evenings on the river with his girlfriend. On other days, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just a place he comes after work for a few hours to relax.

Some boats, thanks to prohibitive gas prices, are more like ďŹ&#x201A;oating homes on the river than amphibious vehicles. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of boats never leave and I refuse to be one of those guys,â&#x20AC;? Nuzzo says.

On the other side of the bridge, dockmaster Rich Goodman surveys the morning scene at Pennâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Landing Marina, where there are 32 slips for boats, 21 of which are for seasonal boats and about 11 of which are for â&#x20AC;&#x153;transients.â&#x20AC;?

Boaters from other cities come to the Delaware to visit Philly for a weekend or a few days. According to Maguire, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a couple named Amy and Mark from Trenton who motors south on weekends to dock at the Marine Center. The woman is a trauma nurse at a hospital, and this is her escape from the madness. In the ballpark of $70, an overnight slip is cheaper than a night at the Motel 6. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every marina has its own ďŹ&#x201A;avor,â&#x20AC;? Goodman says.

While it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the year-round appeal of Pier 3 or the Philadelphia Marine Center, Pennâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Landing has a big future ahead of it. The marina, owned by the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation, is now an extension of Spruce Street Harbor Park, and will eventually be integrated into the multi-million-dollar cap that will stretch over I-95. Word of mouth has spread, Goodman says.

Philly has also attracted some attention from The Great Loop, a waterway route for serious boaters that wraps around the eastern shoreline, up the Mississippi to Canada and back down the Delaware River through New York. Philly is a bit off of the Loopâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s trajectory, but Goodman says the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rising status has lured â&#x20AC;&#x153;loopersâ&#x20AC;? off the beaten path.

The cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rising status has helped bring more eyes on the marinas, Goodman says.

Pennâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Landing was having trouble ďŹ lling all of its slips. In 2016, only 18 of the marinaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 22 seasonal slips were occupied. In 2015, that number was 15. But this year, Goodman says, is a testament to the rising pride of life on the Delaware River. All the seasonal slips are full, and the marina is also luring in its share of transient boaters.

The marina offers three and four-hour slots to dock â&#x20AC;&#x201D; just long enough to hang out or explore the city. During an interview, Goodmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s phone rings and he books a visit for the last weekend in July for an overnight stay.

But the rise in seasonal renters has been the most noticeable. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Life in the marina is a community. People watch out for each other,â&#x20AC;? he says. Q TWITTER: @MAXMMARIN

Philadelphia, Venezuela and the surreal New novel from Sebastian Castillo borders on the strangely delightful

t is a hot summer Sunday in Cianfrini Park. The scene is perfectly South Philadelphian: Four children scribble with chalk on the concrete, a beloved local legend who often practices boxing on the rose bushes walks by, a young girl arrives with a young ferret on a leash.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sitting next to writer Sebastian Castillo, who takes in the scene with a small, wry smile.

Castillo, 29, was born in Venezuela, but now lives in Philadelphia, teaching writing at Temple and the University of Pennsylvania. His latest book, â&#x20AC;&#x153;49 Venezuelan Novels,â&#x20AC;? available from Bottlecap Press, is comprised of short ďŹ ctions.

The work feels half-Venezuelan, halfPhiladelphian, putting culture, genre, and reality into a blender and pressing Liquefy.

Narrators and perspectives are all ďŹ&#x201A;uid -8/< $8*867

throughout the novels â&#x20AC;&#x201C; creating a book that reads like one of Isaiah Zagarâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mosaics.

The novels in Castilloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s novel are microďŹ ctions â&#x20AC;&#x201C; at most a paragraph â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but dense and complex enough to contain entire worlds. The pages of the book are unnumbered, making it easy to get lost in the surreal, strange space heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s creating.

In one novel, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Teeth Playgroundâ&#x20AC;?, a father mourns the closing of a playground of teeth where he and his children grew up, a small, sad tale that feels like it could be a nod to the changing neighborhoods of Philadelphia â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or could be taking place on another planet entirely.

At a time when most publishing in America favors the bland, Castilloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s book offers cyclical prose that follows its own logic, recalling Robert Walser or Jorge Luis Borges. I spoke with Castillo about Venezuela, Philadelphia, and how he came to write one of the most innovative books of the year.

So tell me a little bit more about â&#x20AC;&#x153;49 Venezuelan Novels.â&#x20AC;? When did you start writing it? How did it come about?

I had this very scattered work process that started maybe three or four years ago.

I wrote a lot, then put it away, then deleted a lot, and then kept going back. Once

I decided this was the project I wanted to focus on, it probably took about eight months.

I started writing little blips of narrative with the idea that there was a single speaker behind it. I thought that it would maybe be some kind of journal entry, but I put it away for awhile because it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t satisfying. It felt too portentous. I prefered the idea that there wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a single speaker in the book, but multiple speakers or no speaker in particular.

Then I wanted to explore the idea that all of these pieces, to some degree, deal with how stories can either shrink or inďŹ nitely expand.

I love how youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re playing with form in this book. These pieces are small and compact with sparse sentences that create entire worlds. Why did you call them novels?

The pieces range from a sentence to a paragraph, and I do honestly think of them as novels. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to be coy.

They could be described as prose poems or ďŹ&#x201A;ash ďŹ ction or something in between, and their relationship to those forms is apparent to me.

But I needed to believe they were novels, not poems, not stories. I needed to have faith in the concept of the project: the novel as a collection of crude smears, a confused codex, a list broken off at random â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and these particular novels as a bad, ugly stamp collection from places that no one ever asked to visit, or think about.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s romantic, probably, but then it makes even more sense to me. If entire generations of pitiable people, referred to as â&#x20AC;&#x153;the past,â&#x20AC;? are regularly written away with a few careless words, these distinctions might ultimately matter little. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also some kind of mischievous thing inside of me where I wanted to say, â&#x20AC;&#x153;No, these are novels, and I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care what anybody says otherwise.â&#x20AC;?

The effect is a book that reminds me of a mosaic â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a series of sort of shattered or fragmented scenes that together all make sense.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exactly right. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of the reasons that when the publisher wanted to put in page numbers, I said I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want them. To me, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like a good toilet book.

You know, you can just pick it up and randomly go to any page in any order. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m glad that was your impression. It was intentional.

What does editing look like for you?

With such short forms, each sentence matters so much. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m imagining there was a lot of cutting. Were there always just 49 of these Venezuelan Novels?

One thing that I ďŹ nd interesting about working on really short prose chunks or poems is that the more you edit, the more you feel like youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re ascending to some higher form of what it will be.

But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easily as distracting to think, â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is better than the original version!â&#x20AC;? and maybe thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not the case. A lot of the time, I would edit one thing to hell, and then two weeks later, look at the original one, and say: â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is way better.â&#x20AC;?

There are probably another 50 novels.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not so much that I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like them, but they just felt incongruent. They just didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ďŹ t the mosaic.

It seems like thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot of cultural inďŹ&#x201A;uence about place in this book, so I want to talk about Venezuela ďŹ rst. How did it impact the work?

I was really thinking about the question of place when I wrote this book. So, part of me is just thinking about how a place can be deeply familiar and then shift to an estranged relationship, but still anchor you. I was born in Venezuela and I lived there for many years, but I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been to Venezuela in a long time, since I was maybe 14.

A lot has changed since I left. My dad still lives there, and so I talk to him about the situation. Things are really terrible there right now.

Can you elaborate?

From what my father tells me and what Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve read, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been an intense scarcity of the most fundamental things â&#x20AC;&#x201C; toilet paper, food, water â&#x20AC;&#x201C; for years. And now there are non-stop protests against the current regime of the president, NicolĂĄs Maduro, who used to be Chavezâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s right-hand man.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s frustrating because on the one hand Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m very sympathetic to any socialist government. I want them to succeed.

But thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been so much widespread corruption, and so much violence, so many deaths. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s complicated. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve also heard stories about the right-wing opposition doing things like burning food trucks in order to make things get worse. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very confusing.

It is â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the corruption is so widespread.

And it must be even harder with your father there.

My father is a proxy, and his day-to-day life has become difďŹ cult. It seems unmanageable.

He was out in the street protesting the other day, and he said this 15 year old kid just came up to him, put a gun up to his head, and said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m gonna blow your brains out.â&#x20AC;? The kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s friend came up and told him to calm down. He put the gun away and everyone just carried on. Q 3+,//<:((./< &20

hilly hometown hero Meek Mill has certainly undergone his share of strife since we last saw him in major concert venue headlining mode. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been irritatingly re-tried for past offenses, had and lost a high-proďŹ le romance with a top-tier fellow rapper, traded battle barbs with a young, chart-topping hip-hop icon, and, just recently got accused of having some goofball from â&#x20AC;&#x153;Love & Hip Hopâ&#x20AC;? beat him up.

Now, how the hell is a man going to concentrate on his work with all that gossip distracting him?

That noise, though, is what makes up most of his newest album, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Wins & Losses.â&#x20AC;? Not surprisingly, that just-released follow-up to â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dreams Worth More Than Moneyâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and a series of intimate pop-up concerts â&#x20AC;&#x201C; were designed to prove that Mill is built of harder, pragmatic stuff; that he is still capable of deep rumination about his streets, and that he can still spit bars with fervor.

At the very least, Monday nightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s secret (or private, Tidal membership only) showcase at the Fillmore made it seem as if he had money, sex, community and his past â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and not vengeance â&#x20AC;&#x201C; on his mind.

Dressed in a black bomber jacket, Mill came out with a small combo (drums, organ/piano, turntables), late into the evening, and proceeded to blow the house down with a potent set of old tracks familiar to his longtime fan-base, a few (too few, actually) newer â&#x20AC;&#x153;Wins & Lossesâ&#x20AC;?, and one particularly ďŹ erce feature guest.

While I wanted Mill to perform new album cuts â&#x20AC;&#x153;1942 Flowsâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Priceâ&#x20AC;? (where he mentions Drake, Nicki and lousy friends), Mill, instead, gave up the recently released, piano-heavy â&#x20AC;&#x153;Left Hollywoodâ&#x20AC;? with its plea to â&#x20AC;&#x153;Get back to the trenches,â&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Glow Up.â&#x20AC;?

That last track, with its â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lord be my savior/When it come to gettinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; this paperâ&#x20AC;? verse and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Amenâ&#x20AC;? chorus felt like old school, street-focused Mill (pre-Dreams Worth More Than Money and its R&B lean). The â&#x20AC;&#x153;Day Oneâ&#x20AC;? crowd loved non-LP tracks such as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Save Me,â&#x20AC;? that told of his love of Philly (â&#x20AC;&#x153;I fell in love with these streets, I seen a hundred thou/Bustinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; choppers, sellinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; dope, I went to runninâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; wildâ&#x20AC;?). What the Fillmore crowd really went wild for was a surprise appearance from Cardi B. The â&#x20AC;&#x153;Love & Hip Hop New Yorkâ&#x20AC;? stripper-turned-rapper came dressed in a long platinum wig and a skintight blackpurple-green cat-suit and ran through her

If 2015â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;To Pimp a ButterďŹ&#x201A;yâ&#x20AC;? and 2016â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;untitled unmasteredâ&#x20AC;? made Compton, California lyricist Kendrick Lamar into a word-jazz poet â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a cross between Oscar Brown Jr. and Melvin Van Peebles for the present â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 2017â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;DAMNâ&#x20AC;? winnowed those albumsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; gorgeous, ďŹ&#x201A;uffy complexities into a blunt, bullet-pointed, contemporary whole. A live gig at a giant arena (last weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s show at Wells Fargo Center), then, was but a delicious victory lap for an amazing album meant to focus his sound and image. Think of starkly staging a deeply intricate and thought-provokingly incendiary movie like â&#x20AC;&#x153;Inceptionâ&#x20AC;? as a battle rap and you get the picture of where Lamar was going with this.

Alone on a stage (save for a few kung-fu stage interludes with his alter ego Kung-Fu Kenny and several dancers/martial arts masters) and dressed in a simple yellow tracksuit, Lamar was a portrait of lean, mean rap minimalism writ large. From the propulsive â&#x20AC;&#x153;DNAâ&#x20AC;? to the garrulous â&#x20AC;&#x153;GODâ&#x20AC;? (with its â&#x20AC;&#x153;Oh my, my heart is rich, my heart is famousâ&#x20AC;? refrain) Lamar was holy rolling with gas and making big statements.

Sure, his chorus from â&#x20AC;&#x153;FEELâ&#x20AC;? and its â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t nobody praying from meâ&#x20AC;? message came across the screen on several occasions, but if Lamar didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think he was blessed, he wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have sounded so much like he was saving souls. Even when he covered Schoolboy Qâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Collard Greensâ&#x20AC;? and Futureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mask Off,â&#x20AC;?

Lamar made them his own with a cool, Pentecostal force. The puffs of ďŹ re exploding behind Lamar during his 20-song set just made the entire nightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work body of seem combustible.

If there was a problem at all (and this was minor considering the fervor lent to the likes of â&#x20AC;&#x153;HUMBLE,â&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bitch, Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t Kill My Vibeâ&#x20AC;?) it was leaving the dramatic Lamar so all alone and without any live musical context or accompaniment. Even though his 90 minute-plus stage time didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t amount to much, it dragged in spots (something that couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be said of his backing band-ďŹ lled 2015 showcase) A surprising saving grace came, though, when he disappeared from the main stage only to ďŹ nd himself, moments later, kneeling atop a smaller stage at the center of the room for â&#x20AC;&#x153;LUST.â&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Money Trees.â&#x20AC;?

As he knelt, the twinkly, lit-up stage blossomed and enveloped him like a gilded cage in a Vegas ďŹ&#x201A;oor show.

This now-corny element of most live shows (is it really so shocking when everyone can see the center-of-theroom stage as soon as they walk in?) actually seemed like a happy surprise, as Lamar tightened himself like a coiled ďŹ st below the din of the fairy lights, only to release, and ďŹ ght his way through the brisk â&#x20AC;&#x153;XXXâ&#x20AC;? and the languid likes of â&#x20AC;&#x153;m.A.A.d city.â&#x20AC;?

FOUR FILMS TO GET EXCITED ABOUT

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a little more than halfway through the summer, but thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still plenty of great feature films hitting the theaters before the leaves begin to fall. Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a sampling of four on the horizon:

Atomic Blonde (July 28)

Charlize Theron is an ass-kickin assassin just trying to deliver a package. From the co-director of fellow ass-kicking flick John Wick, David Leitchâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Atomic Blonde makes Theron arguably the most bad ass chick to take over a screen since Uma Thurman donned a yellow catsuit in Quentin Tarantinoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2003â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Kill Bill.

The Dark Tower (Aug. 4) Another Stephen King novel comes to life in this one as award-winning actor Idris Elba is lead character â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Gunslingerâ&#x20AC;? six-shooting his way through countless obstacles on a quest to hunt down â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Man in Blackâ&#x20AC;? played by yet another award-winning actor, Matthew McConaughey. The movie version of this film has a big holster to fill as the The Dark Tower has a major niche following.

Detroit (Aug. 4) Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s almost sad that this movie depicting the rapid rise of hate crime in America could almost be picked up and put into todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s setting. Except this film features the pot that boiled over in 1967 Detroit.

This film from writer-director Kathryn Bigelow does a great job of depicting not how crazy a riot can get but actually does a much better job in depicting just how small the spark can be in setting one off.

Logan Lucky (Aug. 18) Another heist film needs the king of heist films. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where director-filmmaker Steven Soderbergh comes in. The mastermind behind the Oceanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s trilogy, Soderbergh nabs stars like Katie Holmes, Channing Tatum and James Bond himself in Daniel Craig in another smash and grab, winner takes all, assuredly with all the style, panache and really sharp wit that can be packed into a Soderbergh creation. single-seat British SpitďŹ re dances with Nazi warplanes above the beaches of Dunkirk, France; half-amillion stranded men pray for a miracle.

In light-handed restraint, Christopher Nolan triumphs in giving Dunkirk the air to speak for itself. Boldly doing away with narrative scaffolding carves Nolan the space he needs to explore the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dunkirk Spiritâ&#x20AC;? of faith and grit as a protagonist in a cinematic experience unlike any before. Found amid the changing tides of war and fate, Dunkirk is about opening the soul to discover beacons of hope where none should exist. Emerging from this are depths of trust, pain and spirituality that unfold in war-torn sand, sea and sky. To sew these rich cinematic layers together without overwhelming an audience requires from Nolan a caliber of directing that mandates massive risk.

His gamble pays off. In the absence of words, a near-perfect Hans Zimmer score drums Dunkirkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s powerful beat; full-bodied acting by Fiona Whitehead and Mark Rylance shows the brow-furrowing fear of Dunkirkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beaches; stunning 70-millimeter cinematography evokes the very essence of warâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gritty fog. Christopher Nolan more than balances these oft-competitive pillars of cinema. He pushes the bounds of ďŹ lmmaking in a near-silent masterpiece.

ments and never recovered. Visually striking, audibly enrapturing and emotionally delicate, all of my senses were on ďŹ re for the entire length of the movie. I felt spiritually engaged, grateful to watch the evolution of ďŹ lm unfold before my eyes. But even amid this triumph, the real star of Dunkirk is lâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Espirit Dunkerque itself.

A still-used British idiom, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dunkirk Spirit,â&#x20AC;? translates roughly to strength in adversity and never losing faith when standing for whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s right. Annihilation looming, French and British allies seek salvation in surrender, not to Nazis, but to that which is greater than themselves. In the act, they show us that, even in manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s darkest hour, sacriďŹ ce for the greater good pays off. That at the end of the day, what counts is not tanks, bombs and planes but the human spirit in the face of survival.

Pioneering a cinematic structure to embody this, Dunkirk is the culmination of lessons Nolan learned from Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar. Formerly relying on forcing similar elements together to prove thematic points of redemption and love, respectively, Nolan approaches Dunkirk differently. He lets the story put itself together, and what we take from this vivid slice of World War II is far greater than anything the director could contrive on his own. For an odd, but certainly worthwhile afternoon, visit The MĂźtter Museum of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia.

Einsteinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s brain, the jaw tumor of President Grover Cleveland, and Dr. Joseph Hyrtlâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s human skull collection are just a few of the items the museum houses. Medical students will for sure go wild looking at the artifacts and learning about disease detection, vaccines, and all things anatomical.

What it is: Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site Where it is: 532 N. Seventh St. Why you should check it out: Experience Edgar Allan Poe like no American Lit class can ever teach. Tour for free the red-bricked home where the 19th century writer lived for a year with his wife and mother-in-law.

Explore the cellar, which draws a peculiar parallel to the one inâ&#x20AC;&#x153;The Black Cat,â&#x20AC;?a short story that Poe wrote while residing in the three-story building. The only Philadelphia home of Poeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s that survives, visitors will also learn about the writerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s personal issues as well as his experiences with poverty. The life of Poe and his works will come to lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just hope you don't hear a heart beat under the floorboards.

â&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a reader in Kansas with two teenage daughters, 16 and 18. My girls recently met a boy where they work and both took an interest in him.

The 18-year-old was devastated that he was more interested in her younger sister. I spoke to the 16-year-old about it, which is when I found out this boy is going to be a sophomore in college. The fact that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interested in a 16-year-old is a red ďŹ&#x201A;ag. I asked the 16-year-old to keep her distance.

She agreed, but I saw a shirtless photo he sent her. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what other photos heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sent and I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sent him, but I immediately removed all photo apps from her phone. The girls have had public ďŹ ghts about this boy. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve made peace with each other, but now my 18-yearold wants to date him. I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t control the actions of an 18-year-old but (1) it seem likely this guy is a complete creep and (2) isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t her relationship with her sister more important? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Knowing A Numbskull Stalks Adorable Sisters 1. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not ready to pronounce this guy a creepâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;at least not for the age difference. It sounds like he met your daughters someplace theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all working this summer, which is a lot less icky than some college boy creeping on high-school girls via Instagram.

And you say this boy is going to be a sophomore in college, KANSAS, but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t give his age. There are 30-yearold college sophomores, of course, but if this boy went straight to college from 3+,//<:((./< &20

high school, that would make him 19 years old. If your 16-year-old is closing in on 17, this guy could be â&#x20AC;&#x153;olderâ&#x20AC;? by two years and change. While I can understand why you wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want your younger daughter dating college boys, I think you are overreacting to the age differenceâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a moot issue, as heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no longer pursuing your younger daughter.

1.5. You know what is creepy? Pursuing a pair of sisters. The possibility of conďŹ&#x201A;ict was so predictable, it was likely a motivating factor for him.

Getting off on drama and public ďŹ ghts isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a crime, but it is a red ďŹ&#x201A;ag.

2. You ordered your 16-year-old to stop seeing this guy and deleted apps from her phone. (Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cute you think your daughter isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t tech-savvy enough to re-download and hide all the same apps.) You should warn your daughter about the risks of sextingâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;it may be legal for her to have sex (16 is the age of consent in Kansas), but she could face child porn charges for sending photos and this boy could wind up on a sex-offender registry for receiving them. (Laws meant to protect young people from being exploited are routinely used to punish them.) But donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t attempt to micromanage your daughtersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; love lives. Parental disapproval has a way of driving teenagers into each otherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s arms, KANSAS. If you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want your daughters having a fuck-you-mom threesome with this guy before the summer is over, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll let them work through this on their ownâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;but go ahead and stitch â&#x20AC;&#x153;boys come and go but sisters are foreverâ&#x20AC;? on a couple of pillows and put them on their beds.
