FROM THE EDITOR

Hello, neighbor KERITH GABRIEL My neighbor Ron is a good, decent, affable guy. Our conversations usually include us complaining about something, either him calming me down about all the trash on the block – to this day, I’ll never understand why people litter – and me talking him off the ledge when the nightly ďŹ reworks show (and it has been nightly) wakes his pitbull up and causes a bark fest he can’t stop. “I got to put the dog in the damn basement sometimes, just to get some sleep, the barking is constant,â€? Ron says. “If I didn’t love that damn dog, he’d be gone a long time ago, believe that.â€? In addition to an afďŹ nity for his dog, he also loves to chat politics and now that he knows what I do for a living, he’s full of story ideas about how the city needs to do this or the government needs to do that. I nod and say, “I’ll get right on it,â€? but I wouldn’t have a personal life if I chased all the tips Ron’s bestowed on me during our stoop-side chats. On our most recent chat over the weekend, Ron struck up the topic of immigration. His stance is one that follows similar to the current Administration, that “illegalsâ€? must be deported no matter what. He even went as far to say that while it’s heartbreaking to see children ripped from familiarity, the blame really is on the parents. “Look man, I hear you,â€? he always starts when he disagrees with my point. “But if they didn’t bring their kids, [the Border Patrol] wouldn’t have to split them up, so in my opinion, the blame is on the parent. Those guys are just doing their job to protect us as American citizens.â€? We, the extremely fortunate American citizens. Times are tough for anyone not of the 1 percent, but no matter what, we are fortunate to be born of a country where we aren’t running from oppressive rule, malicious drug cartels or forced labor. It’s inconceivable for many of us to think that someone would pack up their entire life and ee a familiar country for a sliver of a better future. But honestly ask yourself, if you had to deal with any of those situations mentioned above, wouldn’t you as a human attempt a chance for a better life for

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

you and your family? Risking life to travel hundreds of miles in search of better life sounds like a pretty dire situation to me. Also to Ron, but who feels that if you want to become a citizen, the doors are open – but go through the proper channels. However, what few people who are born of this country like Ron – a third generation Polish-American – fail to realize, is that the U.S. immigration and naturalization process is a frustrating road for people to come in and readily obtain citizenship – especially povertylevel people eeing third-world countries. Some people who go through proper channels wait YEARS for citizenship, even though many sites say it can only take months. This is of course assuming you’ve had a U.S. visa for at least ďŹ ve years, which is a process in itself entirely. But back to children being separated and being put in detention cages, similarly to the one depicted on this week’s cover. Ron shrugged it off and said, “take it up with the previous Administrations, they’ve been doing that since Clinton man. Obama had a chance to change it and did nothing. In fact, he enforced it.â€? There’s some truth to that. Detention centers have been around for a long time. In fact the image on the cover is actually a photo taken in 2014 during the Obama era. But Obama or Clinton or even George W. Bush wasn’t ripping children from their parents during the process. Putting kids as young as three-years-old in deportation hearings wasn’t what anyone had in mind in the establishment of due process. What we’re all witnessing now is an unprecedented level of inhumanity by a guy in charge elected to highest ofďŹ ce of a country that prides itself on sitting atop a bedrock of freedom and liberty for all. Listen, I’m not sitting here saying let’s open the oodgates and let everyone with a sob story come into the country. There need to be checks and balances and I’m grateful for the people doing so everyday along our borders. My issue isn’t with them. They’re just following protocol. Where Ron and I see eye-to-eye is that people need to go through the proper channels to get in and get help. But all I’m saying is that the process doesn’t need to be so impossible that the only solution is to risk life and limb to get it, only to be treated no better than cattle once you ďŹ nally reach the gates. For those who disagree, as you read this, think about where you’re sitting at this very moment. I can almost guarantee it’s not in a cage. Q TWITTER: @SPRTSWTR

VERHEARD SEPTA, this doc O in PHILLY knows best “Comcast is saying

It appears the concern for SEPTA’s proposal of building a massive gas powered plant in Nicetown, extends beyond residents. Late last week, nurse practitioner Tarik Khan, submitted this as a Letter to our Editor, but the point was so well taken, we thought it deserved a standalone. SEPTA, here’s hoping you consider the following: While our city is outraged at President Trump’s policy that hurts children at our border, SEPTA’s dangerous gas power plant has escaped similar scrutiny. SEPTA’s toxic power plant in Nicetown will be located within a mile or so from the homes of 2,500 black and brown infants and toddlers [a number of whom come from] from low-income families. [There’s also] a major water reservoir, several schools, and our community health center Abbottsford Falls. SEPTA wants to foolishly burn gas to extract cheaper power, causing tons of pollutants like formaldehyde to be dumped annually in the neighborhood. These poisonous gases can cause and trigger asthma, allergies, COPD and pneumonia. Nicetown already has among the city’s highest levels of air pollution, and many of my pediatric patients have been hospitalized for painful breathing and wheezing. Is harming our most vulnerable children so SEPTA can save a few dollars really worth it?

The outbreak

A reporter collects a red-cap crack cocaine vile to test it for fentanyl in West Philadelphia.

There’s been a rash of crack-fentanyl overdoses in Philly – are they an aberration or prophecy of things to come? BY MAX MARIN & CHRISTOPHER MORAFF

O

n a humid Saturday afternoon in West Philadelphia, near 40th Street and Lancaster Avenue, a group of middle-aged Black men swapped grapevine stories about acquaintances who had recently “fallen out after taking a hit of what they thought was their everyday crack cocaine. Little did they know it contained fentanyl, the deadly synthetic opioid that has spurred an overdose crisis across the country, attributing to more than two-thirds of Philadelphia’s 1,217 unintentional drug overdose fatalities last year. Over the last two weeks, at least 20 people in the Powelton Village and Mantua neighborhoods landed in the hospital with fen-

-8/<

tanyl overdoses, the Philadelphia Department of Health conďŹ rmed. Two of the overdoses proved fatal, ofďŹ cials wrote in a memo. The victims were predominantly African American, two-thirds male, most between 40 to 50 years old. And according to health ofďŹ cials, many of them had more in common: they were adamantly cocaine users – not opioids. “But you don’t know what you’re smoking anymore,â€? said one crack cocaine user, who declined to give his name. Dr. Jeanmarie Perrone, the director of medical toxicology at the University of Pennsylvania’s emergency medicine department, said that patients’ response to overdose-reversing naloxone were consistent with that claim.

While this was the ďŹ rst reported outbreak of fentanyl-contaminated crack cocaine in Philly, street testing has revealed a handful of the powder cocaine bags in Kensington have also tested positive for fentanyl over the past several months. But the prospect of fentanyl’s leap into the city’s crack markets – where users are less likely to be opioid tolerant – has the potential to be devastating. And that has health professionals, harm reduction advocates and drug users themselves questioning whether the rash of crack-related overdoses that hit a small pocket of West Philly is an aberration or a prophecy of things to come. “This might be the tip of the iceberg,â€? Perrone says. Just across the Delaware River, in Cam-

den, N.J., emergency room staff and addiction physicians conďŹ rmed numerous cases in recent months in which cocaine users found their supply had been tainted with the ultrapotent opioid. “My patients are blown away by the fact that they have fentanyl in their urine when they said they’ve just used cocaine,â€? says Dr. Kaitlan Baston, medical director of addiction medicine at Cooper University Healthcare. In light of these cases, more people are encouraging all street drug users, regardless of what they use, to carry naloxone. The opioid overdose reversal drug should be standard issue, “even for people who only use cocaine,â€? Baston said. Cheap to produce, difďŹ cult to detect and exponentially more potent than heroin, fentanyl now has a grip on nearly every corner of North American heroin markets. Nevertheless, cases of fentanyl-contaminated cocaine and crack cocaine have been more scattered. News reports of fentanyl-contaminated cocaine and crack cocaine have appeared as close as New Jersey and as far California and Massachusetts. In 2016, Canadian health ofďŹ cials in British Columbia witnessed a string of 43 overdoses over four-day period. Like Philadelphia, they occurred within a small geographic region and among users who were predominantly crack cocaine users. In Montgomery County, Ohio, tests of nearly 1200 samples of cocaine found that nearly 10 percent of the city’s cocaine supply was contaminated with carfentanil, a powerful fentanyl analog that is believed to be responsible for a spike in cocaine related deaths around the Dayton area last year. But such data is in short supply. Most of the information we currently have on fentanyl-contaminated cocaine comes from postmortem toxicology reports – which experts say are an unreliable metric for determining what’s actually in illicit narcotics being sold on the street. “Any toxicologist making the claim based on tox alone should be questioned directly about it, and chastised,â€? said Kevin Shanks, a forensic toxicologist and consultant with Axis Forensic Toxicology in Indianapolis, in a conversation several months ago when headlines ďŹ rst began appearing about fentanyl-contaminated cocaine. “The only way to make that claim is to show it occurs in solid dose evidence or paraphernalia,â€? he added. According to Dr. Caroline Johnson, Philadelphia’s Deputy Health Commissioner, no drugs were found on any of the non-fatal overdose victims in West Philly. But even if they were, she said, as far as she’s aware, only drugs or paraphernalia found at the scene of a fatality are passed on to the Philadelphia Police for forensic analysis. A police ofďŹ cial who commented on the condition that their name and position be withheld told Philly Weekly that in the absence of an arrest there is little political will to analyze seized drug samples.

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

NEWS “They rarely ever test paraphernalia,â€? the source said. “It’s pretty frustrating the overall lack of interest in this.â€? According to data from the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s OfďŹ ce, 221 people fatally overdosed on a combination of fentanyl and cocaine last year in the city. Toxicology data indicate another 166 had a combination of fentanyl, heroin and cocaine in their bloodstream. The fact that only two users out of 20 who overdosed in West Philadelphia died as a result would indicate the potency of the fentanyl they ingested was low. However, one especially troubling piece of evidence adds a nefarious wrinkle to the story: according to the Department of Health, at least two victims tested negative for cocaine, indicating whatever they took may not have been adulterated crack at all. “Cocaine will be detectable in blood minutes after smoking,â€? said Shanks, during a recent follow up interview. “I would expect that if the person overdosed [had ingested] cocaine, then it would be present in their blood or urine. [This] sounds like a case of straightup substitution.â€? Using rapid response drug testing strips, reporters tested eight crack-cocaine samples last Saturday in the the pocket of West Philadelphia where the rash of overdoses occurred. All results were negative for fentanyl. Health Department ofďŹ cials advised healthcare providers to remain vigilant for signs of opioid overdose “even if the drug consumed is reported to be a non-opioid.â€? OfďŹ cials are also encouraging clinical toxicology testing to test reported cocaine users for fentanyl as well. So far, clinical toxicology tests for two patients conďŹ rmed that fentanyl was the only substance detected, health department ofďŹ cials said, while further tests are pending. Meanwhile, in the opioid-plagued Kensington area, health ofďŹ cials are seeing another alarming trend in self-described heroin users: the absence of heroin. While fentanyl is often mixed with heroin in street markets, some ďŹ ve-dollar bags are now strictly synthetic. Dr. Joseph D’Orazio, the director of the Division of Medical Toxicology in the hospital’s North Philadelphia emergency department, says drug tests in overdose patients have shown no signs morphine-based narcotics. “This is a phenomenal shift within the last month of so,â€? D’Orazio says. “I’ve had a couple cases in the ICU of people who tested negative for opioids but positive for fentanyl.â€? Public health experts’ ability to track trends in drug-mixing is undermined by a lack of universal reporting. While the Philadelphia Department of Health collects anonymized overdose information from hospitals, there are no standard reporting requirements at the local and state level. Rhode Island has a law requiring its hospitals to report all suspected opioid overdoses to the state’s health department within 48 hours

Mantua Pike NEW JERSEY 998 Woodbury Heights, NJ 08097 – but that’s the exception to the rule. Pennsylvania enforces mandatory reporting requirements for epidemic diseases – like syphilis and gonorrhea, for example – but drug overdose has not made its way to that class. “Mandatory reporting of all overdose with all hospitals in the city with mandatory testing would greatly enhance our knowledge of what’s going on,â€? Perrone says, noting that Penn voluntarily reports overdose data to the Philadelphia Poison Center. One piece of good news is that, for the time being at least, cocaine contaminated with fentanyl is rare in Pennsylvania. The most comprehensive study was released earlier this year by the Drug Enforcement Administration, which tested more than 30,000 individual samples and found fentanyl or its analogues present in fewer than one percent of samples between 2015 and the second quarter of 2017. But it still remains unclear how and why the two drugs – which produce radically different highs – would be winding up in retail drugs packaged for street sale. Most experts on drug markets suspect cross-contamination may be a culprit. Given the potency of fentanyl and its numerous relatives, and the sensitivity of modern testing technology, even trace amounts – such as might be picked up from a hastily cleaned cutting and bagging table – are capable of producing a positive result. “It’s pure speculation at this point,â€? says Patrick Trainor, spokesman for the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Philadelphia Field Division. “We monitor current drug trends in the area and we’re aware that opioid drugs such as heroin and fentanyl have been combined have been combined with other classes of drugs, but we don’t necessarily understand why it’s being done or if it’s being done intentionally...but it certainly does pose a signiďŹ cant risk to people who are dealing with a substance abuse disorder.â€? Pennsylvania attorney general Josh Shapiro has been outspoken on everything from women’s rights to immigration. His latest fight involves the latter in a lawsuit against the federal government.

Holding court PA attorney general joins 16 other state AGs in lawsuit against Trump Administration’s zero tolerance immigration policy BY ANDREA CANTOR

O

n June 26, the ofďŹ ce of Pennsylvania attorney general Josh Shapiro issued a press release regarding the government’s stance on immigration in America.â€? Shapiro’s statement in said release held no punches. “The federal government is treating children like prisoners; detaining them behind chain-link cage fencing, and cutting them off from communication with their parents. This is unconscionable treatment,â€? Shapiro said. “Washington must act to pass comprehensive

-8/<

immigration reform and using family separation as punishment is ineffective, cruel and inhumane.â€? Taking one step further, AG Shapiro backed up that statement when he ďŹ led a lawsuit that same day against the Trump Administration’s “zero toleranceâ€? policy, joining 16 other AGs from various states that included Washington, Massachusetts, California, Iowa, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and the District of Columbia. Introduced by United States AG Jeff Ses-

sions back in early April, the Trump Administration’s “zero toleranceâ€? policy enforced stricter procedures on federal persecutions of adult migrants, many of whom are refugees, crossing the southern border illegally. What the policy also did is set an unprecedented rate of over 2,000 migrant children being stripped away from their parents during detention. Amidst a whirlwind of backlash and retaliation, President Trump signed an executive order to stop the separations at the border on June 20. However, he was largely criticized for his lack of detail on the children who were already separated and how and when they would be returned. “The Trump Administration’s family separation policy – which it made a choice to enact – violates our Constitution, is inconsistent with U.S. asylum laws, and is fundamentally at odds with our core principles and values,â€? continued Shapiro in the release. “The executive order President Trump signed last week has not remedied the problem, and I’m taking legal action to stop this abhorrent policy. I won’t allow Administration to use children as leverage to make up for Washington’s failure.â€? The same day the AGs ďŹ led their suit, a California federal judge ordered the end of family separations at the border and granted the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) a preliminary injunction, which set a 30-day deadline for children ages 5 and up to be reunited with their families. For children under 5, reuniďŹ cation must occur in 14 days. While the California judge’s ruling is a decided victory in what has been reported as a humanitarian crisis, it is still uncertain how border authorities will be able to meet these deadlines. As a result, protests around the nation have been in full swing. On June 28 in Washington DC, hundreds of protesters, mainly women, had an immigration protest inside a Senate ofďŹ ce building that led to nearly 600 arrests. Over the weekend, Philadelphia joined a host of other cities around the county in protests, organized by Families Belong Together in partnership with MoveON, the ACLU, and over 100 other organizations. As for the AGs’ lawsuit, while it may not become the vehicle for legislative change as it was intended, it still carries a symbolic weight for people like Peter Gonzales, president and CEO of the Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians. “[When] I see that there are attorneys who are using their license to practice law to advocate for humanitarian causes, to advocate for children and families who are vulnerable, I applaud those attorneys for stepping-up and doing what is right and just and challenging,â€? Gonzales, a state-licensed attorney told PW. Gonzalez emphasized how the policy has not only been traumatic to the directly impacted parties, but also to other immigrants, such as those living in Philadelphia, who have been “triggeredâ€? by the policy and the news

cycle’s reporting of it. He explained that the current policy augmented with the ongoing separation of undocumented immigrant families in the States is “more than disturbing, it’s totally disorienting and unsettling.â€? “[There] are children who are being separated from their families, even in Philadelphia, their parents are being arrested and detained and deported,â€? said Gonzalez. “A lot of families have been separated for many years. So, all of this activity and the amount of attention it’s getting, and the regular depiction of children and parents being separated is having a very real impact on people who’ve experience that.â€? According to a report conducted by PEW Charitable Trust, 232,000 Philadelphians were foreign-born and 794 refugees were resettled to the city in 2016—the last census year. The report was unable to attain the number of foreign-born Philadelphians who originally came to the US as refugees and the number of people with asylum status in the city. “The family is the basic unity in society and the protection and preservation of the family is of paramount public concern,â€? states the Pennsylvania Domestic Relations Act. The AGs’ lawsuit drew from Pennsylvania legislation, including the state law that declares “the family is the basic institution in society in which our children’s sense of self-esteem and positive self-image are developed and nurturedâ€? and that “these feelings and values are essential to a healthy, productive and independent life during adulthood.â€? The law references the “emotional scarsâ€? a child bears when they are deprived of this “basic institution.â€? As per the press release, the lawsuit makes four main arguments: The Trump administration’s policy violates the rights of parents and children under the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which holds: “No person shall ... be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.â€? The Fifth Amendment applies to any “person,â€? and is not limited to U.S. citizens. The lawsuit alleges the administration engaged in discrimination on the basis of nationality or ethnicity through its policy of child separation. The suit claims the administration acted arbitrarily and capriciously under the Administrative Procedure Act by implementing the policy without justiďŹ cation and in conict with laws requiring government to consider children’s well-being. The policy is inconsistent with our nation’s asylum laws, which allow non-citizens who face persecution in their home country to seek asylum upon arrival in the United States. Currently, there are federal centers across the nation holding the parent-less migrant children, including centers in Camden, Pittsburgh and reportedly in the Lehigh Valley. A compilation of rough cut jazz tracks from a recording session done by John Coltrane were created into an album, a continuation of memorable hits from the jazz legend.

Coltrane, Discovered

Lost recordings in the archival of the legendary jazz musician have been recreated into his latest album BY GREGORY DALE

O

ver a half century ago, legendary jazz saxophonist and composer John Coltrane left a studio session in New Jersey with an album’s worth of material that wouldn’t be unearthed for years. These recordings were recently compiled to create a new album released on June 29 entitled, Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album. The album not only contains previously unheard music from the legendary musician, but

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

it also marks the era when he delved into the “free jazz movement. Coltrane is often attributed as one of the forefathers of the style, which is an unrestricted approach to jazz that broke down typical standards. The 14-track project was released courtesy of Impulse! Records and features recordings from Coltrane and his Classic Quartet, comprised of musicians Jimmy Garrison, Elvin Jones and McCoy Tyner. There are two previously unheard tracks deemed “Untitled Original 11383 and “Untitled Original 11386. Additionally, the song “One Up, One Down,

which was only heard on a bootleg recording in the past, appears on the album as a studio recording for the ďŹ rst time. On March 6, 1963, Coltrane and his cohorts recorded the material at Van Gelder Studios in Englewood Cliffs, N.J. Later that day, Coltrane left the session with reference tape and brought it to his home in Queens, N.Y. to share with his wife, Naima. Though the musician eventually remarried, the recordings stayed with his ďŹ rst wife and weren’t discovered until her death. Ken Druker, vice president of Jazz Devel-

opment at Verve Label Group, the umbrella label to Impulse! Records, said listening to the new project is like being a â€œďŹ‚y on the wallâ€? at the height of Coltrane and the Quartet’s career together. “The music itself reveals Coltrane’s unique ability to appeal to the mainstream while simultaneously creating ambitious, avantgarde compositions. Throughout the album, Coltrane adheres to many traditional jazz structures, but the record is also ripe with experimental moments. I think that the work recorded during this session really captures a moment in the musical evolution of Coltrane and his quartet as their style became increasingly more ambitious and genre-bending in the years before Coltrane’s death.â€? Born in Hamlet, N.C. in 1926, Coltrane’s passion for music developed as a youth when he took up playing the clarinet, according to his ofďŹ cial website. He relocated to Philadelphia in 1943 where he immersed himself in the local music scene where he joined forces with saxophonists Jimmy Heath and Benny Golson. After briey serving in the Navy during World War II, Coltrane decided to pursue music as a profession. From there, he climbed up the ranks in the Philly music scene playing the sax in a number of big bands. Eventually, he went on to work with famed musicians Earl Bostic and Dizzy Gillespie. Though his success was building, he developed a heroin habit during this time that he wouldn’t shake until years later. In 1955, he was called to audition for famed trumpeter Miles Davis’ band in New York City. After spending four years with Davis’ group, he rose to the national spotlight. From 1959 through 1961, Coltrane was signed to Atlantic Records where he recorded his famous songs like “Cousin Mary,â€? “Naima,â€? and “My Favorite Things,â€? the latter of which became his biggest commercial success. Thereafter, he signed to Impulse! Where he released the recordings Live at Birdland, Live! at the Village Vanguard and Impressions. Also, during this time, he met and married his second wife, Alice, who was a pianist. Coltrane died on July 17, 1967 after suffering from liver cancer. While his life was tragically cut short, this latest album is a testament to an enduring legacy of jazz by one of the best to ever play it. “Coltrane is unquestionably not only one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time but one of the greatest artists, period,â€? Druker said. “He was an innovator that completely transformed jazz and ipped it on its head. His cutting-edge, inventive, and often avantgarde approach to music was way ahead of his time, but this did not scare away contemporary audiences. Coltrane’s versatility, originality, and raw talent have certainly solidiďŹ ed his place as one of the greats, and his work continues to inuence numerous musicians today.â€? SAVAGE LOVE

It got better whose sex lives got better after the wedding.

DAN SAVAGE

I

n a recent column, you said you never hear from married couples whose sex life got better and more frequent over the years. Well, now you have. My wife and I were married 24 years ago, and we are currently having more sex and better sex than we did in the ďŹ rst years of our marriage. There are many reasons why, including therapy, antidepressants, and weight loss and subsequent surgery—but I would have to say that the big reason is communication. If you had known us 25 years ago, Dan, you would not have given us good odds. We’d been dating only a year and a half when we got engaged, and we’d known each other less than two years. I was a virgin, my wife was not, together we hadn’t gotten much past second base, and neither of us had laid our kink cards on the table. We were (and still are) introverts with poor communication skills and anxiety/depression/mental-health issues. I won’t say it’s been fairy-tale perfect—the kind of perfect that makes you barf and roll your eyes—but it’s been pretty damn close. My wife has been incredibly GGG, and I hope I have been, too. So there you go, Dan! Now you know there’s at least one couple out there whose sex life has only gotten better over the years. – Better Erotic Ties Totally Enhanced Relationship Last week, I responded to IMDONE, a woman who married a man despite the sex being “infrequent and impersonalâ€? during their courtship. To the surprise of no one who has ever given sex advice for a living, the sex didn’t get better after IMDONE and her boyfriend got married. “Here’s something I’ve never seen in my inbox: a letter from someone explaining how sex with their partner was infrequent, impersonal, uninspired, unimaginative, etc. at ďŹ rst but—holy moly—the sex got a fuck of a lot better after the wedding,â€? I wrote in my response to IMDONE. I did allow for the possibility that my sample was skewed; people with good sex lives don’t write to tell me everything’s ďŹ ne. So I invited people whose so-so sex lives improved after the wedding to write in. And did they ever: My inbox is packed with e-mails from couples

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

I was a very experienced woman (ďŹ ve years as a swinger and partners numbering in the high double digits) when I ďŹ rst met the man who would become my husband. My husband-to-be was a virgin. Sex was barely okay and very infrequent. But we were both in our early 40s and ready to settle down. We also had an amazing friendship, and we were never as happy apart as we were together. It helped that we shared some kinks and were both up for what we agreed would be a nice and mostly companionate marriage. So we got married. And, wow, did everything change! We went from once a month to a couple times a week. Turns out he needed that emotional attachment to feel safe and secure enough to open up and relax and enjoy himself. We’ve been married for years now. The sex is still good. It’s not as frequent as it once was, but it’s really good when we have it. So, yes, sometimes it does get better! – Woman In Fucking Ecstasy Am I the ďŹ rst or the hundredth person to write in? Yes, sex for us got better after marriage. I suspect you don’t see it in your inbox very often because this isn’t what most people would consider a problem and we don’t want to waste your time! All it took for the sex to get better was practice and paying attention to cues and solving problems. I strongly suspect that perseverance and a bit of luck were also major factors. – Practice, Practice, Practice My sex life improved after marriage. I am a straight male with a highly stigmatized kink. I was deeply ashamed of my sexual interest even before my mother discovered my porn when I was 14 and told me I was a pervert that no decent woman would ever want. When I met my wife, our sex life was okay— but I was never fully present, because I would have to concentrate on my fantasies in order to sustain an erection. I eventually retreated into masturbation. My wife knew I was masturbating in the middle of the night instead of having sex with her, and that led to some enormous ďŹ ghts. So I told her about my kink, fully expecting that it would result in the collapse of my marriage. We didn’t speak about it for a week, and then she calmly asked me if I wanted to do this with her instead of just watching porn about it. – Partnership Improved Sexual Situation

Potential. What They Are Saying: “We have had the pleasure of working with Kathy Conway for more than 10 years and are pleased to consider her our go-to real estate advisor and agent. She has a comprehensive and ďŹ rsthand knowledge of the Philadelphia market, is a great strategizer and has an acute understanding of the sense of urgency we frequently feel, on either the buyer’s or seller’s side. Recently, for example, she showed us a property that we insisted would be ideal for us. Once we saw the space and found it disappointing, she immediately, based on her familiarity with our needs and lifestyle, gave us a suggestion that she believed would be better suited. We’re moving into that place, a month from now. Thanks, again, Kathy.â€? ~Pat Harris
