shakespeare in Clark Park

ree Shakespeare performances in Clark Park return this week with The Winter’s Tale, the classic story of longtime friends—Leontes and Polixenes, rulers of Sicilia and Bohemia—who are driven apart by power and jealousy.

Directed by Kittson O’Neill, the tragicomedy stars Kevin Bergen and Bi Jean Ngo—along with a chorus of more than 30 Philadelphia-area youths, who act as observers to the on-stage antics. “The chorus, and the audience, are a witness to the triumph and failures of the adults, just like children are in a family,” says O’Neill. “The audience gets to see the children flourish when the kingdoms heal and forgive.”

Where to take a first date during Center City Restaurant Week Comfortably charming options for lunch or dinner— and for the supersavvy foodies.

Hooking up single techies... ...with a date and a job. That’s the twofold mission of CandiDate.

T

here are a lot of similarities between searching for a job and searching for a romantic partner.

That’s a simple enough epiphany for millennials who live and die by the online search—yet Amber Wanner is one of the only people who, having thought it, has proceeded to turn it into a truly fresh business plan. The idea forms the backbone of her new Center City-based company, CandiDate, whose mission is elegantly simple: It’s a dual-purpose networking operation that matches Phillybased technology employers with top talent—and also matches local tech professionals with dates who’ll hopefully be more compatible than the Tinder and OKCupid average.

Wanner, a 24-year-old Villanova grad who quickly found post-collegiate suc-

cess as a corporate recruiter, says the concept presented itself organically during the course of her work. Job-seekers who she’d placed, she says, would say, only semi-jokingly: “Hey, you found me this awesome job, and now I’m in a great place in my life—can you help me find a wife?”

It occurred to her that this was Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs in action: Now that these young tech professionals were more comfortable in their financial security, they were ready to get more comfortable in their personal lives. That sounded like a mandate for a smart, human-resourcessavvy matchmaker. Wanner founded CandiDate last August—then, this spring, after local online-shopping entrepreneur Mike Golden of ShopRunner invested in the company, she set up an office in the Industrious coworking space on Broad Street

and hired marketing pro Karin Wolok as her director of business development.

They’re off to a strong start: CandiDate has worked with some 30 tech employers so far, Wanner says, and one of their matchmaking clients just told them that the date they hooked him up with is moving into the city to take the relationship to the next level. She hopes that’ll be a trend; she’s passionate about bringing new people to settle down in the city.

At the desk next to Wanner’s, Wolok checks her email. “Ha!” she laughs. “This guy I reached out to just wrote back to me: ‘I’ve heard of looking for dates on LinkedIn—but recruiting on OKCupid?

ith Center City Restaurant Week once again upon us— it runs Aug. 2–7, takes a day off, and then resumes August 9–14—the time has come for the annual summertime ritual of determining which fine establishments we’ll be trying out for the first time. Along with that comes a related process: taking someone to eat with us for the first time.

This year, with so exceptionally many restaurants in on the action, we thought we’d break down the options for you even further than we usually do. Here, then, are three first-date-dining approaches: the casual lunch, the nice dinner, and the food sophisticates’ gustatory geekout.

First off is the lunch-date-ona-budget route. As the Zombies pointed out way back in 1968, this is the time of the season when love runs high—yet, for many of us, budgets don’t necessarily follow suit. Which means that a first-date lunch is often the best bet for sending out those first feelers to see if the person you met last week at that “party” (cough Tinder cough) is really someone you’d like to get to know better.

For this, I’d make sure to book lunchtime tables at a.kitchen, Le Castagne, Barbuzzo, Tequila’s, and Zama, among others. These are places that all offer different brands of cool; their own, unique vibe; and reliably excellent food.

They also all provide atmospheres

and menus that will make your date think you’re possessed of great taste and panache.

Of course, not everyone is on a budget, and plenty of restaurants that participate offer ample opportunity to spend a bit more beyond the special Restaurant Week menus being offered. So if you’ve got the funds to spend a bit more than the $35 for three dinner courses (lunch is three-for-$20), consider doing so on drinks.

And therefore, consider doing it at Petruce et al (phenomenal wine selection), Panorama (ditto, especially by the glass), Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse (ask which wines by the glass are being poured with the amazing Coravin system), Butcher and Singer (cocktails, wines, more), and Jamonera (load up on Sherry).

Meanwhile, if both you and your new friend are self-styled “foodies,” there are options in abundance. In addition to the spots noted above, I’d definitely check out Russet, Fitler Dining Room,

Bistro 7, Aldine, Bistrot La Minette, Abe Fisher, and The Treemont.

Then again, limiting yourself to any one category may not be the right move for you after all. Because with so many great Philadelphia restaurants taking part in Restaurant Week this summer, I also know people who just eat wherever they can get reservations—and with whomever else is free that particular day or evening.

Whatever strategy you choose, you really can’t go wrong this year.

Unless, of course, you happen to combine Restaurant Week with a date that goes horribly wrong. I personally have a nightmare about being single again, going to a restaurant for a first date, and only then discovering that my companion is allergic to salt, bread, vegetables, olive oil, butter, and meat, averse to frying, braising, grilling, sauteing, and roasting, and a teetotaler. Who doesn’t love a good pasta dinner, especially enjoyed in the middle of vibrant East Passyunk, where the only thing tighter than the street widths are the generations of families dining at outdoor tables at places like the popular Paradiso? where along the line, we developed the idea that beer should not be tainted with fruit.

What an absurd notion! Thankfully, craft brewers have gotten over that idea, or we wouldn’t have refreshing chuggers like Rivertowne’s Hala Kahiki, brewed right in Monroeville, PA. This simple, easy-drinking ale would probably be a nice lawnmower beer all on its own, but spiked with pineapple juice it becomes something fresh and delicious. It’s light and juicy, with hints of newly baked white bread and just-cut pineapple; if the sun is beating down on you, this beer really hits the mark. Try it on draft at Tattooed Mom, Pinocchio’s or Capone’s.

Free Will Peach Lambic.

Purists will scoff at calling this a lambic—lambics are unique to the area around Brussels in Belgium, whereas this is brewed in Perkasie, Pa.—but when you want a blast of peach-infused tastiness, do you really want to argue about beer nomenclature? With the tartness in the aroma, incredibly light body, and touches of white wine and oak mixed with sour peach you’ll get in each sip, it’s better to focus on what’s going into your mouth than what’s coming out of it. Highly effervescent, light and soda-like, Free Will’s entry into the world of fruit beers is the kind of bright, “ahhhhh” drink that pairs well with a summer day. Fegley’s BrewWorks Blueberry Belch. Name any fruit—

in recent years, someone has used it in a beer. One fruit that has been used here and there but that has never fully taken off, probably because few brewers have done it well, is the blueberry. Maybe it’s a difficult fruit to balance right. Maybe it’s just the Donald Trump of fruits, too divisive and crazy for mainstream appeal. Whatever the reason, blueberry beers are hit or miss. Fegley’s, though, is a hit, assuming you like blueberries. Light, briskly carbonated with a wealth of tickly little bubbles, and a bit murky from the heaps of fruit used in it, Blueberry Belch is an appropriate name because there is a LOT of fruit here. It’s a little tart and acidic, making it good for summer days. Try it at Bar 31 or at the BrewWorks locations in Allentown and Bethlehem.

Boon Kriek. If senses-shattering sweetness is not your thing, you can

take a turn for the sour by exploring styles like framboise (raspberries), peche (peaches), and krieks (cherries), all fruit-infused variants on traditional Belgian-style sour ales. Some are complex, expensive, and difficult to find. Others, like Boon Kriek, are none of these things. Imagine a tart, vibrantly carbonated cherry drink that goes down lightly and easily, with just enough cherries to grab your attention and just enough light wheat to remind you that you’re drinking a beer. Some compare this to a cherry soda, and that’s not entirely inaccurate, nor is it a bad thing. In fact, it makes it the ideal cocktail to have when enjoying a nice salad or veggie wrap, preferably while outdoors. Try it yourself at Eulogy or Jose Pistola’s.

Manayunk Watermelon Wingman. When it comes to the fruits of August, none screams “summer” more than the watermelon, that big, juicy gourd of happiness that makes millions of BBQs better every year. One of the best types of beer for summer is the saison, a dry, crisp ale usually touched with wheat and spices. So the natural question you might ask when you discover that Manayunk makes a watermelon saison might be, “Why has no one done this before?” The body is light, and like so many easydrinking summer brews, it pours a thin straw color. You get some light grass in the nose, then watermelon Jolly Rancher sweetness in each sip. The base beer may be a saison, but fruit dominates the proceedings—and if you’re looking for a fruity beer, that’s exactly what you want. Beyond the hue of ‘Blue’ Singer-songwriter Joshua Thomas is set to perform not one, but two of Joni Mitchell’s seminal LPs this weekend. bY bILL cHENEvERT @BillChenevert

B

ecause my reformed-hippie dad was a Beatles head, I got exposed to all the good stuff during my pensive, closeted teen years: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (“Déjà Vu” was my jam), Jethro Tull, Grand Funk Railroad, Zep, the Dead, et al. Then there was Joni Mitchell, a woman in folk and rock music who’d light me up, inspire me and comfort me through endless hours of teenage angst.

Blue, her iconic 1971 masterpiece and fourth LP, absolutely packed with incredible songs, was like daily sonic church for me.

Joshua Thomas, a talented singer-songwriter in his own right and local musician-barista star, is taking on Blue in its entirety Saturday night, plus another Mitchell standard, 1976’s Hejira. He has released two EPs and an LP, and was even tapped to perform at a Joni Mitchell tribute at World Café Live this winter, where he performed “A Case of You” and “The Wolf That Lives In Linsday” from 1979’s Mingus.

But on this night at the First Baptist Church of Philadelphia, Thomas is playing every song on Blue with accompanying piano, guitar and dulcimer; then, after a short break, he’ll bring on Tom Cladek to handle drums, Ryan Kuhns on bass, Greg Moore on guitar and Max Cudworth on sax. If you’re a coffee drinker, you probably know these guys: Thomas pours at Elixr, and Ox Coffee in Queen Village is Cudworth’s place. (“We got a big coffee family together,” Thomas jokes.) “[Mitchell]’s the reason I started writing, and these two albums in particular are important to me,” says Thomas, who made a touching guest appearance at MANNA’s “Shut Up and Dance” in March performing “Paper Heart” (from The Harboring, his 2014 EP) to PA Ballet principal dancer Ian Hussey’s choreography. “Blue hooked me. And Hejira threw me into her discography.”

Which songs from Blue—other than “Case”—do it for him? “I would say I’m really partial to ‘My Old

Man’ and ‘The Last Time I Saw Richard.’ It’s an extremely relatable record to just about anybody who’s ever had any kind of heartache [or] been in a relationship. ‘Carey’ and ‘California,’ too. Those songs are uplifting and about experiencing life in a different way.”

Thomas came to Mitchell a little peculiarly: He was learning and studying jazz piano, and his grandfather loved Diana Krall, who, of course, covers “A Case Of You” on her 2002 album, Live In Paris.

He’d been diving into Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, but he put them on hold to find out about this “J. Mitchell,” who was credited in Krall’s liner notes.

“I went in and just went straight to the Joni Mitchell section,” Thomas says of his 15-year-old self honing in on Mitchell’s music at Tunes, the record store in Marlton, NJ where he worked. “Something was drawing me into it.”

His obsession with female vocalists has always been there, he says. After Mitchell, it was Tori Amos.

But “even when I was listening to jazz, it wasn’t Sinatra or Dean Martin. I don’t know what it is.” Mitchell’s even said that she knows gay boys like Josh and me are the choir to whom she’s preaching. “She’s expressed that the people who love her music are women, gay men and people of color,” Thomas says, “so that’s why she’s always surrounded by Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter—guys that found her music to be refreshing.”

On Saturday, I’ll be waiting for “This Flight Tonight”—and, just for a moment, imagining myself back on a big yellow bus, uncomfortable headphones hugging my ears, riding toward unknown, uncertain tomorrows, yet finding solace and strength in every truth-telling note. n

Black Movies Matter

At this year’s BlackStar Film Festival, legacies are sealed and sullied, and narratives take on new shapes. By GENEVIEVE VALENTINE @GLValentine

t’s no secret that Black artists in Hollywood have always struggled to be able to tell their own stories. Part of what makes film festivals like Philly’s annual BlackStar important is that they’re a platform to offer audiences a glimpse at that cinema. With an emphasis on documentaries—many of which involve the arts— and several impressive slates of short films, 2015’s four-day festival—expanded to three venues this year: International House Philadelphia, the Institute of Contemporary Art and World Cafe Live—has constructed an informal theme of haunting legacies and the power of reframing narrative.

NARRATIVE FEATURES In the Morning (with Didn’t I Ask for Tea?).

Nefertite Nguvu’s drama—which won the Audience Award at the 2014 UrbanWorld Film Festival—follows nine young Brooklynites as they make it through a single day of love and heartbreak.

Mission: Impossible— Rogue Nation

(Directed by Christopher McQuarrie / Written by McQuarrie & Drew Pearce) After 19 years and five films, you have to give it up to the Mission: Impossible movies for their sheer consistency: No reboots, retcons or remakes here.

Instead, every five years or so since 1996, through changing styles and tastes, we’ve been able to count on Tom Cruise stepping back into the role of super spy Ethan Hunt and engaging in another round of globetrotting espionage and death-defying derring-do.

Directed by Christopher McQuarrie (who previously worked with Cruise on 2012’s Jack Reacher, and continues the tradition of every installment having a new helmer), the latest Mission sees Hunt matching wits with an outfit bearing the sinister appellation “The Syndicate,” which operates almost like an opposite number of our Impossible Mission Force. It’s been gratifying to see the movies grow closer to the style and tone of the classic 1960s TV show with each successive entry, and Rogue Nation is the clearest effort yet to mimic the show’s ineffable stylistic tics. Like the weekly skein, McQuarrie and Co. present us with a puzzle box of such complexity that we in the audience are utterly mystified as to how our heroes will figure their way out of it.

Returning as Impossible agents are Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner and Ving Rhames; new castmates include villain Rebecca Ferguson and Alec Baldwin as Hunley, the CIA director who wants to see the IMF shut down. Of course, the movie (and the series as a whole) works largely because of Cruise.

Nearly two decades out, Ethan Hunt has become the star’s signature role, and at 53, the indefatigable action hero hasn’t lost a step as he runs, jumps, rides and drives from eye-popping set piece to the next with both will and skill.

Based on how easily he slips back into character here, I don’t see any reason why Cruise couldn’t keep doing Mission: Impossible movies for 20 more years.

In fact, it tells you something about how confident the filmmakers are in the confection they’ve concocted that the big “Holy cow!” stunt prominently placed in all the trailers and adorning all the posters—Cruise dangling precariously by his hands from the outside of an airplane—is part of Rogue Nation’s teaser sequence, tossed off before the opening credits have even rolled, Bond-style. It’s like they’re telling the audience, “You think that’s cool?

can’t dance; I have no coordination.”

This is said to me every week.

The speaker is attending one of my dance classes for the first time. This is our initial human interaction, right after saying “hello.” Certain they’re going to be bad at something they’ve never done, they need me to be emotionally prepared.

But why? What do they think is going to happen? That I’ll be so insulted by their inability to twerk to DJ Fresh’s “Earthquake” that I’ll leap on to their chests, pummel them in the face, and scream, “How could you do this to my art?”

Maybe it’s because women are socialized to apologize for their flawed existence. We must let everyone know we don’t think we’re perfect, lest they perceive arrogance. What they don’t yet know is that I start every class by saying, “This is not an audition; this is a party. As long as you keep moving and you don’t run into anybody, you’re doing great.” I give modifications to scale the intensity and safety cues to prevent torqueing out a knee, but otherwise they’re free to be as terrible as they please.

The thing is: They almost never are.

There are degrees of finesse, and everyone learns choreography at a different pace, sure. But to see someone who’s truly, distractingly bad is incredibly rare. And it’s even rarer that they can’t do it, it’s more likely they have just written themselves off already and aren’t investing cognitive effort. Dance, while obviously physical in nature, isn’t mindless. It requires thinking.

One of the many places I teach dance is a medical school’s gym. The students are mostly young women training to be physicians, surgeons, and researchers. These are smart cookies, obviously: people who use their brains continuously for logicalmathematical reasoning, who consider their intelligence part of their identity.

They may or may not also think of themselves as athletic or artistic.

Some of them grasp, intuitively, that being “good” at dance is just another type of brain work. It’s about awareness of where your parts are, figuring out how to make your body create specific shapes, pattern recognition in the steps and keeping a steady tempo with the music. Spatial, musical and kinesthetic intelligence come more easily to some, of course; but we get better at pretty much everything with focused practice.

But some of these med students, despite being confident enough to spend their careers opening up human bodies and put them back together again, get super shy at the prospect of jamming out to reggaeton. In their jobs as doctors, they’ll prescribe body-altering chemicals, navigate the onerous American health insurance system, and put their hands inside actual people—but the prospect of moving their feet to an 8-count is daunting.

They’re not the only ones who find dance anxiety provoking. Some people who feel fine about playing team sports or going for a run on a city street turn into Courage the Cowardly Dog when it comes to dancing. I know folks who will do public speaking, skydiving, even disarm bombs in a warzone but who wouldn’t Dougie if you offered them a hundred dollars. Johnny Depp, a man who has lived in media scrutiny for his entire adult life once said he’d rather “eat a bag of hair” than dance.

Yet our brains are wired for it. Through an instinct called entrainment, we have an innate desire to synchronize our bodies with a beat and match our movement to others. The act has demonstrable health benefits, well beyond being an excellent form of exercise. It’s shown to make us think faster and stay sharp longer into old age.

Around the world, dance is a part of nearly every culture and one of the clearest ways we demonstrate values around bodies, sexuality, personal freedom and art. It speaks volumes that North Korea has tightly choreographed group numbers with fans and drums while Jamaican dancehall has wickedly fast rhythms with emphasis on big lower body gestures.

Dance is our purest communication to the world as physical beings. It makes the unseen visible, and instantly and wordlessly conveys personality, wit, bravado and sensuality. And that’s why it’s terrifying: to have our true selves revealed and open to judgement, to be vulnerably engaged in a shared experience. And also why it’s magical and potentially life changing—and why I want everyone to give it a shot.

If you’re already dancing, then I say yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas, with all the As you can fit. But this is my call to those who are more timid to try a dance class or just stepping out on the floor during a wedding reception. I’ll be joining you. And I promise you’re not that bad. n

have always wanted to have a girlsonly sex party, but I’m not sure how I feel about actually organizing one. What’s the etiquette if I do organize one myself? Do I need to provide the dildos for people’s harnesses? Or just the condoms and lube? And how do I find people who want to attend?

Do I just tweet out an invite? Is there a better way that makes me seem less sketchy?

—No Snappy Acronym What I know about hosting girls-only sex parties could fit inside what I know about the Marvel universe with room left over for what I know about the Higgs boson—and all of that could fit inside Lindsey Graham’s chances of being president with room left over for Donald Trump’s humanity.

But luckily for you, NSA, I know someone who knows quite a lot about both girl sex and sex parties.

“Hosting a play party is much like hosting any other party,” said Allison Moon, a San Francisco–based writer and sex educator. “You want guests to feel welcome and comfortable—this means you provide lube, safer sex supplies, refreshments, and towels and/or puppy pads.”

Moon is the author of two popular lesbian werewolf novels—more are hopefully on their way—and the really terrific memoir Bad Dyke: Salacious Stories from a Queer Life. Her most recent book is Girl Sex 101, a terrific sex-ed book “for ladies and lady-lovers of all genders and identities” that features girl-sex wisdom from an array of sex-positive superstars.

Moon has also hosted numerous sex parties, and says hosting a girls-only sex party does not obligate you to break open a piñata full of dildos as your guests arrive.

“Toys are the responsibility of guests,” said Moon. “If NSA has a few sparklingclean vibes and dildos that she doesn’t mind using as party favors, by all means put them out. I have a couple of Magic Wands that are great for getting the party started, because there’s always someone who’s wanted to try one. But she doesn’t have to spend a ton of cash outfitting her friends’ crotches.”

As for finding people who might want to attend your sex party, Moon and I both agree that putting an invite on Twitter—or Facebook or Instagram or Farmers Only or Yik Yak—is a very, very bad idea.

“NSA should stay away from social media to start,” said Moon. “Instead, she should make a list of friends who might be down and give them a call to see if they have friends they’d want to bring. Bonus points if she has friends who are up for

being used as ‘ringers.’ Lady parties are notorious for taking hours to warm up— someone has to be the first one in the pool, and a ringer can help get the party started. Or she could consider some icebreaking games, like spin the bottle, as a goofy way to get the girls ready to grind on each other.”

But let’s say you don’t have any friends who might want to come to your girls-only sex party—or you’re too chicken to ask your friends—is there another way?

“If her slutty-friend pool is small, she could look at sites devoted to sex-positive folks, like FetLife or her local chapter of a leather women’s group. But she should be super explicit about her women-only policy if she does post anywhere online, and she should also consider screening guests with a phone call. And I strongly recommend a closed-door policy, i.e., folks must arrive by a certain time or they can’t come in. This keeps you from having to monitor the door all night so you can enjoy your own damn party.”

FORMER MA BRUDER AND SONS, INC. PURPOSE OF THIS NOTICE: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is announcing its proposed remedy of Corrective Action Complete with Controls under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, as amended (RCRA), for the former MA Bruder and Sons, Inc. facility (MA Bruder). The proposed remedy is continued compliance with the existing environmental covenant to restrict certain uses of land and groundwater.

FACILITY DESCRIPTION: The facility is located in a mixed use industrial and residential area at 5213 Grays Avenue in southwest Philadelphia. It is currently vacant. Historically, MA Bruder produced and packaged a variety of oil-based and water based paints. Industrial operations were closed in December 2007 and the Facility was fully decommissioned in 2008. Decommissioning activities included removal and clean-up of all remaining chemicals and manufacturing materials; including raw materials, tanks, process vessels, piping, etc., as well as the removal of several storage structures.
