saturday of rum & ale
N
o fewer than three separate festivals this weekend will pull together locals to eat, drink and be merry on the same day—with a heavy focus on the drink part. Saturday, July 25, sees Xfinity Live! taken over by the Philadelphia summer Craft Beer & Music Festival. Highlights such as a Victory Beer Hall, a PBR Country Beer Barn with a mechanical bull, a Summer Love Lounge and a hard lemonade area just underline the fact that some 200 craft beers will be available from 2 to 7pm while live bands play. (1100 Pattinson Ave. xfinitylive.com) Across town, Cavanaugh’s River Deck will play host to A Pirates life: Margaritas and Rum on

the River.
From 2 to 6pm, the waterfront venue will take on the feel—or at least the taste—of a pirate’s hideaway, as patrons will enjoy unlimited rum punch and margarita samples amid a best-dressed pirate contest and—ahem—”Captain Jack’s Booty Bounce Contest.” (417 Columbus Blvd. theriverdeck. com) Finally, the Philadelphia Zoo will get jumping just as the other two start to wind down, as its annual summer Ale Fest brings together more than 25 regional craft brewers to sample their best & newest wares, from Prism to Evil Genius to Manayunk Brewing Co. Mini-handheld juicer at Omoi Zakka Shop
Life just got a whole lot easier for the person manning your house-party bar, making the mojitos, lemon drops or any other tasty beverage (alcoholic or not) that uses fresh citrus juice. With this mini-sized ceramic lifesaver, you can now squeeze every necessary drop from halved fruit, then pour its acidic extracts directly into a cocktail shaker, measuring cup, blender or glass without muss or fuss, thanks to its welcome pair of pouring spouts. This thing’s not only practical, but it’s cute, compact, easy to clean and easy to obtain at the flyest Japanese market in Center City. ‘Cause honestly, wouldn’t your precious time be better spent sipping and enjoying those ... what’re you serving again? Watermelon margaritas? Pass one down, thanks. Who it’s for: Indulgent imbibers and dedicated cocktail crafters, lovers of all things ceramic. Toting cold wine or pre-made cockails to enjoy outdoors can be a real pain. Why? ‘Cause by the time you arrive at your destination and get yourself settled into the comfy lawn chair you’ve brought along, it’s no longer at its iciest best—and duh, of course carrying a cooler’s not an option. Corkcicle has got the cure for what ails us: Its sleek insulated canteen keeps beverages chilled for 25 hours—or hot, if you prefer, for 12—so it’s the summer must-have, serving on-the-go refreshment that can be tossed into a beach bag or backpack and works just as great for entertaining guests on the porch or patio. It comes in three smart-looking varieties, but if you want it in either matte black or white, buy it directly from the Corkcicle website—SWAG only carries it in silver. 2015 SUMMER BOOZE ISSUE
|
Follow us on Twitter for frequent happy-hour & nightlife updates: @phillyweekly
Where we drink—day by day
Whether you prefer a cocktail bar or a happy hour, Philly’s got you covered every day of the week. Mondays
Cocktail bar: The Raw Bar at Pennsylvania 6 runs a buck-a-shuck special from 5-7pm, but stick around until 10 for 6 Appeal, Philly’s only weekly burlesque show, which takes place in the lush lounge at the top of the staircase. Enjoy a champagne-based Southern Belle, Sangria or Dr. Neville as part of the joint’s summer cocktail series. There is also the lavender-infused gin drink dubbed the Spring Garden and Prohibition-era recipe Orange Blossom. 114 S 12th St.
267-639-5606. pennsylvania6philly.com Happy hour: Two daily happy hours offer distinctly irresistible pleasures. First up, there’s Devil’s Den of South Philly, where all taps are half off every 5 to 7pm; considering how few places you’ll find a draft list that simultaneously features the likes of Dark Horse Sapient Trip Ale, Brew Bus Rollin Dirty Vanilla, and Bullfrog Smoked Cherry Wheat, this is a no-brainer. (1148 S. 11th St. 215.339.0855. devilsdenphilly.com) Meanwhile, in Center City, Tabu is the gay sports bar with a 5-to-9pm Happy Bear Happy Hour (“fun food menu with big bear proportions”).
It’s standard bar fare, but unnervingly tasty: Get the fried green beans—and share the nachos, they’re bigger than a drag queen’s wig. Head upstairs for a live show, or just get turnt on $6 Absoluts. 200 S. 12th St. 215-964-9675.
tabuphilly.com
Tuesdays
Cocktail bar: Yes, they’ve got perfect Provence-inspired small plates and beautiful cheese and meat boards, but the real draw at The Good King Tavern is the crisp, clean and unique cocktails. For standards, they serve a Hanky Panky (a gin Manhattan with Fernet Branca), Hurricanes (you know those sweet Bayou rum jawns), a Corpse Reviver (“Hair of the Dog”s with cognac and gin, usually), Tiki cocktails (a Zombie or a Diablo), and a Boulevardier (a bourbon negroni). But their staff creations sing, too: Vincent Stipo’s variation on a Pimm’s Cup; a Pisco Punch they call a Girard Ave. Draft; or Guy Smith’s Society Hill, a rye cocktail with sloe gin and aperol. 614 S. 7th St.
215.625.3700. thegoodkingtavern.com Happy hour: The relative Rittenhouse newcomer Crow and the Pitcher has
12 | Philly Weekly | July 22-29, 2015 | phillyweekly.com
quickly become a favorite among diners and drinkers from all over the city by virtue of its excellent, casual food and a beverage program that’s as exciting as it is easy to love. And on Tuesdays, that love is likely to be felt even more intensely, with a two-and-a-half-hour happy hour featuring excellent cocktails for a mere $5. Bring your A-game, and your Advil for the aftermath. 267 S. 19th
St. 267.687.2608. crowandthepitcher.com Weekly event: Nothing beats the punk ambiance and affordability of Tattooed Mom’s Taco Tuesday special. Beef or vegetarian tacos are a dollar each, or enjoy this month’s featured “Helloooooo Nurse!” with lemongrass beef, house made green papaya slaw & chopped peanuts. Tecates are only $2.50 and drafts are half off from 5-7 and 10-11. Every table has little plastic toys and free suckers to make it a truly immersive dining experience. 530 South St. 215.238.9880.

Wednesdays
Cocktail bar: Emmanuelle usually thrills us with astonishing artisanal cocktails named after famous references from
geek culture, and this summer’s new drinks menu doesn’t disappoint, hitting both X-Men fans and Tolkien fans (see also page 22) with the appropriately blockbuster-themed “Adamantium & Mithril.” Happy hour: Because a single happy hour isn’t enough, the geniuses behind the stellar Lloyd Whiskey Bar offer a second chance at boozy redemption from midnight to 1 in the morning. Beer and cocktails both see discounts, and if you’re a late-shift worker, or just getting off the floor or the line at the restaurant you work at, Happy Hour Number Two is a godsend. 529 E. Well, they do, especially with their hummus— which is a killer half-price deal during the 5-to-7pm weekday happy hour, only $4.50-$6.50. Washing it down, though, is a real steal: a rotating $3 draft, $4 off all house cocktails (which are brilliant), and $3 of all glasses of wine, which are sourced from around the world. Happy hour: Drinking in Manayunk can be a proposition fraught with the potential for disaster, the historically younger crowd as likely as not to devolve into a bacchanalian revery assertive enough to put Nero to shame. Why I love the Citywide
Bar folks argue over Philly’s eponymous drink special—but it’s got a special place in my heart.
T
he Citywide Special: It’s the staple of any struggling or spendthrifty young Philadelphian’s plan to drink on a budget. In essence, it’s a shot and a beer; it takes all kinds of different forms, and, found at a relatively cheap price, it’ll take you toward Inoxitown in an economy-class seat. Three beers and three shots, and your check is $15? Better make sure you’ve got a designated driver, or a walk home, or Uber at the ready, because that’s no joke. Some facts: Lore has it that the late Bob & Barbara’s bartender and punk icon Rick D. started the Citywide phenomenon with a 12-ounce PBR can, a 1.5-ounce pour of Jim Beam, and a $3 pricetag sometime around the dawn of the 21st century. The date is much disputed in local drinking circles, because people have been drinking a shot of whiskey alongside their cold can of choice for way more than 15 years. But the B&B Special, subsequently dubbed the Citywide, was special in the first place in its very specificity: born out of the city’s premiere PBR museum, where jugs of Jim are poured with, often, a little spill. (S’part of the charm.) In a way, the term Citywide is a misnomer, because it doesn’t exist throughout the entirety of the city—only in glorious, boozy bursts. The beer and the booze are often substitutable: PBR can and often does become Kenzinger, Narragansett, Schlitz or even a SlyFox can. (Sometimes, if you’re lucky, a pounder!) The liquor, too: Jim might be swapped out for Jack, Bushmill’s, Old Crow or Old Grand-Dad. And let’s be honest: You’re lucky to find it at $3. This is, after all, 2015. But you’ll find em’ for $4 and $5 at all kinds of places. Dirty Frank’s pours ’em with premade Kamikaze shots paired with 7-ounce ponies of High Life or Rolling Rock. Hell, Cantina even ran a Tecate can and Sauza Tequila special (T&Ts) until one particularly rowdy night marked the end of an era. The tricky part, as I see it, is that asking for a Citywide at a bar that doesn’t explicitly have it on the menu can get you the stinkiest of stinkeyes. To that, I tell a bartender: “Hey, it’s just my favorite way to get drunk. I’m not looking for the cheapest of cheap options—can you suggest a version of that based on your inventory?”
Because even if it’s a draft Kenzo with a shot of Jack for $9, cool! I’ll take it. You can keep your haughty, jaded assumptions about my taste or tipping power to yourself until the check comes, thank you very much. From the service perspective, look: I get it. I’ve been there. The bar makes pretty much no money on the sale of specials unless they sell a ton of them. If your case of PBR costs $17 or $18, and your pour of one to two ounces of a reasonable whiskey adds up to just 80 or 85 cents? The bar’s making next to nothing on your special. But it brings me in. I tip excessively, I make good conversation, and a happy bar regular’s the best publicity you can scare up, amirite? My go-to is always American Sardine Bar, where they pour Bushmill’s (if they got it) along a ‘Gansett tall boy for $5. A sleeper on Frankford Ave. is Bottle Bar East, which serves Heaven Hill with your choice of PBR, Bud Light, Narragansett, Becks or Rolling Rock for $4 all day, everyday. Kung Fu Necktie, Atlantis, El Bar, the Barbary and Lloyd Whiskey Bar have got versions up there, too. The Dive serves ’em with Yaegermeister, if you can believe that, and Catahoula’s got one, too, for Pennsporters and Queen Villagers. Center City adherents include Doobie’s (with SlyFox), and wonderfully warm and humble Locust Rendevouz serves some variation of a shot and beer for $2 (though Pinnacle Cherry vodka with Bud Light Lime may not be your poison). Even Fiume, the pinnacle of booze sophistication, carries one for $4. The Citywide is like the sensible flat, the sneaker pulled out of the professional lady’s bag at the end of the day or the workingman’s Timberlands. It gets the job done. And to those fancy bartenders who throw that Oak Tree shade when you suggest that’s what you want: Step off. Maybe my next drink’s a Ketel martini or five. Honestly, it’s a lovely, blue-collar tradition in this city—why are you hating on it so? Is it really worse than walking into a bar and asking for the cheapest thing you’ve got? Maybe that deserves squinted eyes—but not putting back a few specials and getting jovial in the process. n

5 cocktails to make with Philly beers The Diesel, with 2nd Story Fritzie’s Lager When it comes to
beer cocktails, a great place to start is with a Diesel. First you’ll need to pour half a glass of hard cider. Next, top off with a nice local lager. We’re recommending 2nd Story Fritzie’s Lager, a malty, fullbodied Vienna style lager that goes terrific with their Fried Things platter. What you’ve got now is called a Snakebite, but we’re not done yet. Top things off with a dash of blackcurrant syrup, and you’ve got a Diesel, a fruity bit of wonderful you’ll want by the pitcher. Grab Fritzie’s Lager at 2nd Story (2ndstory brewing.com), but you’ll be providing your own cider and syrup.
The Steamroller, with Saint Benjamin Transcontinental
The folks who make Anchor Steam have a trademark on the phrase “steam beer,” so versions of that style are called California Common beers. We’re going to need one for this recipe, and we don’t need to go far: Saint Benjamin, a new three-barrel nano brewery in Philly, makes a nice one called Transcontinental. Start with an ounce of elderflower liqueur, an ounce of fresh-squeezed lemon juice, an ounce of rye whiskey—we recommend Silver Fox Rye, distilled right in Camden by Cooper River Distillery (cooperriverdistillers.com)—and a half ounce of Kirch liqueur, which is a kind of cherry brandy. Finish off with a lemon twist, pour 12 oz of Transcontinental atop the mixture, then show off to your friends after making such a killer beer cocktail. Cheers!
The Dirty Flower, with Dock Street Crackle and Squeeze If you want to class up your next punch bowl but still want beer as part of the menu, a Dirty Flower is a great option. To start, peel a grapefruit and squeeze 3oz of fresh juice into a pitcher. Add 6 oz of gin, 4.5 oz of elderflower liqueur (St. Germain is recommended), a ¾ teaspoon of sugar and 3 dashes of orange bitters. 16 | Philly Weekly | July 22-29, 2015 | phillyweekly.com
Stir until dissolved. Now we need some help from the folks at Dock Street, one of Philly’s hometown breweries. You’d usually use a traditional wheat beer here, but Dock Street’s Crackle and Squeeze offers a fun twist. It’s a saison with pepper and fresh-squeezed lemons. You’ll need about 64-72 oz of it, so consider getting a growler fill at their brewery (dockstreet beer.com) to fill up your pitcher. Pour over a slice of grapefruit peel when you serve.
The Cream Soda, with Yards Love Stout
This recipe typically uses that famous dry stout from Ireland, but why go overseas when you can get an excellent dry stout right here in Philly? We’ll be using Yards’ Love Stout, a creamy beer with hints of chocolate. Start off with 1 oz of ginger liqueur (Domaine de Canton is suggested), 1oz of Navan vanilla liqueur, a cognac made with vanilla, and 6 oz of club soda. Now gently pour 6-8 oz of Love Stout over top the same way you would a black and tan. What you’ve got is a creamy, frothy beer cocktail that tastes almost like cream soda. And yes, it’s as yummy as it sounds. You can find Love Stout all over the city, including at Yards Brewing itself (yardsbrewing.com).
The Hoppy Red Eye, with Saint Benjamin Inca Forget
Bloody Marys. If you want a morning pick-me-up, you want a Red Eye—or in the case of this slight variation, a Hoppy Red Eye. We’re going to use Saint Benjamin’s Inca, a smooth drinking cream ale that gets a little bit of West Coast-style zip thanks to a healthy dose of hops. Now that you’ve got your 12 oz of Inca—yes, it smells great, but don’t drink it yet—you’ll need to add 1 oz of vodka, 6 oz of chilled tomato juice and one egg. An alternative method is to go roughly half and half with beer and tomato juice, mixed to taste, and finish with a few drops of Tabasco sauce. Either way, grab a Growler of Inca during Saint Benjamin’s twice monthly brewery tours (stbenjaminbrewing.com). n

German food wunderkind Jeremy Nolen’s flexing his considerable culinary muscle at his fetching week-old Queen Village eatery, where, away from the stoves at Brauhaus Schmitz and Wursthaus Schmitz, the humble nice-guy chef can go all American—or as close to it as he wants. Luckily, the housemade Riesling sausage among the charcuterie choices help his German influences marry nicely with his new target audience and make for a tasty addition to a first-rate menu. The cured meat’s as tender and flavorful as you’d suspect, with a subtle sweetness from the wine that’s not overly floral. Enjoy it alongside the creamy Bleu d’Auvergne before diving heartily into the rabbit tetrazzini entree. That, too—with its fresh pappardelle, mushrooms and smoked almond slivers in a sherry bechamel sauce—is worth writing home about. Chef Eric Wallace, the angel in the Devil’s Den kitchen, serves its beer-braised pork belly in two screamingly delicious meals: a peach and pork belly French toast special and the pork belly hash, a popular menu favorite. The latter fuses generous amounts of layered crispy-fatty meat cubes with tender potato chunks and a buttery, herb-blessed broth beautifully thickened by a single poached-egg yolk. But the former is out of control, too: thick Brioche slices under a warm compote of vanillaroasted New Jersey peaches cooked down with the pork belly, which give a sublime salty counterbalance to the fruit’s tart notes. Feel free to ignore its accompanying maple syrup. So, what puts the hash in the top spot? It’s always on the DD menu, and the French toast, which utilizes fresh peaches, only appears when they’re in season. Who it’s for: Expert brunchers, fervent fans of swine dining, South Philly families whose elders enjoy a Bloody Mary or beer flight before noon. Where to get it: Devil’s Den, 1148 S. 11th St. 215.339.0855. devilsdenphilly.com —S.L.

Sure, if you’re super-parched to discover a new band or stumble upon a set that catches you off guard, by all means, zig-zag from stage to stage across the Camden, NJ riverfront. But as a veteran attendee and new-music superfan, I offer a subjective itinerary for your consideration.
75-minute set, if it’s to accommodate My Morning Jacket, we’ll keep it chill. Jim James’ brilliant psychrock band may have hooked in a huge fan following with 2005’s Z, but 2011’s Circuital made me a convert. I’d personally be happy if they just performed Circuital cover to cover, but that’s probably not gonna happen.
Friday, July 24
Another early day! Sheesh. Start with emerging local weird rockers Pine Barons (Noon) at the River Stage. A must. I’ve been wanting to see them again since they opened for The Districts earlier this year. But, but … try to hustle over to the Marina Stage for Cheerleader (12:30pm), an infectious, Califlavored power pop band that specializes in big, happy sounds. Not sure how they’re from Philly and capable of such positivity, but hey, we’re not complaining. Unless you want to tear yourself away for Buckwheat Zydeco (1pm) at the River Stage, which is not unadvisable, stay put for Israel Nash (1:40pm), the extremely talented guitarist and songwriter who’s done outstanding work for Midlake, among others. Yes! I’ve been waiting for this moment for a while: Courtney Barnett (3:55pm), you guys, is the real deal. She sold out Union Transfer not too long ago, and I wouldn’t have been so heartbroken if I’d known she’d be a perfect mid-afternoon River Stage addition this weekend. I’m still listening to Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit. It’s five months old, but a clear contender for album of the year. Pleasant surprise, but Sunday night’s SBC night brings in two more openers: Rayland Baxter (5:30pm) and The Wailers (6:30pm). But we’ve always been on board for George Ezra (8pm) and a fest-closing Grace Potter (9:30pm). I mean: “Budapest.” And Potter’s set at the Welcome America 4th of July Jam in 2013. Both are excellent reasons to listen ‘til the last note rings out. n
Go ‘head and get out to the JerseyArts.com Marina Stage for Milton (6:10pm), a local up-and-comer who nails sultry, smooth R&B. His smoky, agile voice is enough to get you across the Delaware for the first night, which goes off without a technical headliner at Susquehanna Bank Center. Dawes (10:05pm) helped kick off the first night of big names at last year’s fest, opening for Jenny Lewis and Ryan Adams. These sun-kissed canyon-dusted boys, founded in part by brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith, always deliver with their pretty, romantic folk rock. Songs about heartbreak and longing never go bad.
Saturday, July 25 The River Stage is packed with ringer after ringer this afternoon and gets set off just right with the righteous Hop Along. We’re still listening to the May-released Painted Shut. They’re enough to get us up early to get a good spot for their 12:30pm set time. But then comes Calexico (1:50pm), First Aid Kit (3:20pm), Lord Huron (4:55pm) and Delta Rae (6:40pm). It’s gonna be hard to pull ourselves away from this stage. But we must. My body’s ready for church at SBC. My queen, St. Vincent (8pm), from where I sit, is one of the coolest acts in the game. All five of her records are literally flawless, and in support of her self-titled last one, she stopped through Philly at Union Transfer and left the place in ruins. She’s a sickening guitar player and a gifted songwriter. Fine, if Annie Clark must be condemned to a

Middle Earth, live in concert
The Philadelphia Orchestra provides a live score to Fellowship of the Ring on the big screen at the Mann on Thursday. by StEphEN h. SEgal @stephenhsegal
A
charming moment unfolded on WHYY this past Monday during Fresh Air correspondent Dave Davies’ interview with actor Ian McKellen. The two of them listened to the clip from The Hobbit in which McKellen, in character as Gandalf the wizard, first invites a dubious Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) to embark upon an unexpected journey. “Oh,” mused McKellen afterward, “if you want to understand how music works in film, listen to it on radio. Wasn’t that wonderful... how it shows the music coming in and underlining what the audience might’ve missed, that this conversation is crucial and is the beginning of an adventure and all that excitement? It’s wonderful.” “Which you don’t hear while you’re doing the acting, of course,” Davies noted. “Of course not,” agreed McKellen. “Nobody tells you [what the music will be like].” He laughed: “And often enough, of course, it’s because the actors haven’t done their work properly that the director has to resort to some music that will do it for them.” McKellen and his castmates, of course, did some pretty fine work in the Lord of
the Rings movies. Still, on Thurs., July 23, we’ll have a chance to see just how powerfully the music can underline those performances, when the Mann Center screens The Fellowship of the Ring to the live accompaniment of the Philadelphia Orchestra and two full choral groups: the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Boys Choir. Tempted, but not quite sold yet? The evening’s program is even niftier than that: Until the show actually starts, the Mann is also running an Instagrambased Lord of the Rings costume contest. Upload a photo of yourself in costume before 8pm Thursday, and, during the show, judges will choose a winner to receive a golden “One Ring” forged by Philly-based Steven Singer Jewelers—which, come to think of it, is a hilariously appropriate team-up. (We’ll be looking for Gollum to take over as Singer’s new spokesperson after this: “We hatessssss him! Give us the precious!”) n
Thurs., July 23. Doors: 6pm. Showtime: 7:30pm. $25–$85. Mann Center, 5201 Parkside Ave. 215.546.7900. manncenter.org

Five dollars, and also some change K Plays & Players hosts a week-long local comedy festival that insists its performers bring something new to the stage.
ate Banford and Aaron Nevins are so on-brand; they’re such good saleshumans about Five Dollar Comedy Week, I have to hand it to them—their zeal is infectious and charming. FDCW is in its third run now, its second at Plays & Players in Center City, and naturally, they’re calling it the biggest, best and funniest one yet. “People aren’t gonna believe what they’re gonna see here,” Nevins says. Banford backs him up. When people try to tell her that they’ve been to previous installments—that they’re old Philly comedy hands, talking mess like, “Oh, I’ve seen it all”—she’s quite firm with them: “No, you haven’t.” “The whole thing is that we do all new shows every time, so every festival is totally different,” says Nevins, the co-host of the popular “Hang On” comedy and interactive talk show at The Adrienne. “We’re not the ones to say, but experts are saying, ‘This is the best one yet.’” Oh? Who are these experts? “The local Philadelphia comic experts,” he insists. “We’ve got some peer-reviewed journals,” Banford elaborates. Five Dollar Comedy Week really does offer something unique with these super-sized humor fests. The tagline says it all: “7 Days. 30 New Shows. Deal With It.” Every show is $5, but $25 wristbands get you access to every last show you could possibly care to suffer through—I mean live for. “We recommend people come to every show, or, at the very least, try to go to very different shows,” Nevins says. “I find myself laughing at things that I never thought I’d find funny.” “If you want to see four shows, it’s a really good deal to buy the wristband,” Banford chimes in. “It’s like you’re seeing half of them for free.” “It’s an 83 percent savings,” Nevins agrees. I’m pretty sure he made that number up. “You’re practically making money,” Banford concludes. Listening to them, I’m quite certain that if Five Dollar Comedy Week Corp. existed, I’d be writing a letter to the CEO right now to commend the staff on their enthusiasm and on-brand language. “It’s just a result of sending out emails with words along these lines for the past two weeks,” Nevins admits. “These are the only words in the English language I know right now.” The two pride their fest on its diversity of comedy, but also in its performers and hosts. Which is a relief; I attended a comedy contest a couple weeks ago, and I was a smidge bummed that the lineup was all men—and that a lot of the same old gender tropes were trotted out for laughs, from self-flagellation and body-shaming to porn and Tinder. “We have so many women running shows, so many women in the shows. Every night, you’re going to see lots of women,” Nevins says. “One of our main aims is to have a very diverse festival. None of the shows are allowed to be just stand-up or just sketch comedy. They have to be a brand-new original concept—a new concept you’ve never seen before in Philly,” says Nevins. “I was the president of the Diversity Club in high school,” Banford pipes up. Oh, that’s cool, Kate. 24 | Philly Weekly | July 22-29, 2015 | phillyweekly.com

I ask them if they have a stance on Kylie Jenner’s cornrows. Shockingly, they don’t. What about if they’re #FeelingTheBern? Nevins arches an eyebrow: “Do you mean, are we feeling the Bern or climbing the Hill?” “Those work really well together,” Banford says approvingly. “Politically speaking, I think Kate and I have a procomedy agenda. Maybe the country feels a lot funnier when it’s in a complete state of disrepair,” Nevins adds. It’s a good point. I ask if those tropes I just mentioned are just easy fodder for new comics. “Yeah, dating, porn and whether or not you’re fat—these aren’t necessarily seasoned pros when they’re hitting the same tropes,” says Nevins. “But I would say you could make the same accusations of Louis C.K.… He hits those same topics, but he’s one of the best comedians around. It’s how you handle it.” “Sometimes when you first start out, they can be more crass or crude to be shocking in front of an audience, but after a while, that wears off. Then you stop being fake and start getting real,” says Banford. Excellent Real World reference, girl. High five! What about gay stuff, I wonder: Does Five Dollar Comedy Week have any of that? They both pause for a second. “We have several shows that are run by gay people—does that count?” Nevins asks. Yeah, that’s fine. “Dan Vetrano’s co-hosting The Silent Show. We’ve got Amok Trial by Alejandro Morales... Bring whatever sexual orientation you have, because Five Dollar Comedy Week is appropri-
ate for any heights, hair color … Whatever you are, you’re not gonna feel left out.” Banford handpicked her recommendations for progressive queers like me. They are:
black Mass (10pm, July 23), hosted by Charles Blyzniuk, Jon Lalu and James Masciulli: “They’ve never done this before, but they have done research and are willing to try any and all methods to get Lucifer in the building.” The bit Show (10pm, July 24), hosted by Kate Banford and Aaron Nevins: “The acclaimed clusterfuck is back by popular demand! Fifteen brand new shows crammed into one show. As the show goes on, the shows get shorter. Don’t miss it.”
The Silent Show (7pm, July 25), hosted by Chris McGrail and Dan Vetrano: “A completely silent variety show. No words allowed. Just like that movie The Artist.” One Minute Monologues
(8pm, July 26), hosted by Jacquie Baker: “60 performers, 60 minutes. 60 original monologues. Seriously, you do not want to miss this show.” n

Could mono kill a man’s sex drive? How about getting deployed?
M
y wife and I have been together for more than 10 years, practicing some kind of nonmonogamy for more than seven. We tried different things—open, dating others, FWBs—but after a bi threesome with another guy a year ago, we knew that was our thing. For a while, everything was great, but roughly a month after that defining threesome, I came down with a bad case of mono. In a couple of months, we resumed our bi sexdates with our FWB, and I noticed I had a hard time getting horny and even had a hard time getting (and staying) hard. More foreplay was needed and fewer distractions were acceptable. I even resorted to pharmaceutical help. We assumed I was still recovering and that diet and exercise would make it all better. Then I had a work-related crisis that lasted until March (and blamed stress from that, since things didn’t really change), and finally in March I got shipped off to a war zone. And I still don’t have the drive I had a year ago. My brothers-in-arms ogle every female who happens to be around, and sometimes they hook up even though they’re not in open relationships—unlike me, who is in one but has no desire to hook up with anyone. I rarely masturbate these days, and if I do, I need sexts and naughty pictures from my wife (and our FWB) back home to get in the mood. I just recently started to get morning wood again, and I blame all this on the stress of being in a war zone. But I fear these are just excuses and I may have to accept the fact that I’m just getting older and this is how my libido is gonna be from now on. I’m turning 30 in a few weeks, so that doesn’t help, either. What are the chances that this is just an unlucky chain of events, and when this is over, I could go back to being my old horny self? —Currently Occupied Mostly By Arms Though
no real treatment other than the tincture of time,” said Dr. Gaster. “Mono is a pretty insidious illness in that it typically causes really severe fatigue, which can linger for a long time. Other common symptoms are muscle and joint aches.” Could fatigue and aches still be affecting mood and interest in sex? “They could,” said Dr. Gaster. “It would not be typical, but they could. The duration of mono symptoms is typically around three months, but they can persist to some degree for one to two years in more severe cases. None of the effects of mono are typically considered ‘permanent.’ So it would be important to reassure someone that the effects of mono that are still present after 12 to 18 months could still likely resolve as more time passes.” You came down with mono less than a year ago, COMBAT, so you’re still in that one-to-two-year symptoms-could-persist window. You also dealt with a work-related crisis before being shipped off to a combat zone—that sounds extremely stressful, and not everyone reacts to stress the same way. The stress of being in a combat zone could make the guys around you horny while having the opposite effect on you. Be reassured, like the doctor said, that things—your dick included—will most likely right themselves in another 6 to 12 months. The fact that morning wood is returning seems like a good sign, as is the effect a few dirty texts from the woman (and FWB) waiting for you back home has on your dick. Come home safe—and props to you and your wife for continuing to grow together sexually. That’s probably why you’re still together, and still in love, despite having married so young. n
I asked a doctor—Dr. Barak Gaster, a physician at the University of Washington and a regular (if sometimes mortified) guest expert around here—if mono could damage and/or diminish a guy’s libido, his ability to stay hard, and his masturbatory routine for nearly a year. “Mono is a viral illness for which there is
