I

f you were alive during the apex of Bill Cosbyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lengthy career, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tough to call yourself a Philadelphian and never have had a little pride that you hailed from the same city as the comedian.

His hit TV sitcom, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Cosby Showâ&#x20AC;? portrayed the successful black family that black families aspired to be, afďŹ&#x201A;uent members of Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s makeup, raising smart children, holding notable careers and being relatable to all, regardless of color, race or religion. We were even okay with them portraying all of this from a Brooklyn brownstone and not a home on Rittenhouse Row, because the patriarch of the family made it known where his roots lay.

He predated Uncle Phil, Will Smithâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stoic uncle in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fresh Prince of Bel Air,â&#x20AC;? a character that many Black males will attest was the closest thing to a father they had growing up.

But in the aftermath of Cosbyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recent trial of alleged sexual abuse and admittance of using narcotics like quaaludes to commit said abuse, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been really tough to look at Cosby in the same light. The case was deemed a mistrial as a hung jury couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t conďŹ rm innocence or guilt â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which holds a very similar mindset to many of those same Philadelphians, who wouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve fought to the death prior that Cosby could do no wrong.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a notion explored via â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cosby Unraveled,â&#x20AC;? a series of podcasts created by WHYY, that chronicle the life of Cosby from his modest beginnings here in Philly, his rise to fame and his career crash fueled by allegations of wrongdoing and now the latest poster child for the culture of rape in America. WHYY reporter Annette John-Hall moderates the pod that could be considered the audio version of ESPNâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Emmy award winning series, â&#x20AC;&#x153;O.J.: Made in America.â&#x20AC;? John-Hall says that there is 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

indeed very much a split among Philadelphians who contest Cosbyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s guilt and who deny any notion of innocence.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;No matter of whether heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ultimately found guilty or not, in the end itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to very hard for some people to reconcile,â&#x20AC;?

John-Hall said during a really insightful and intellectual conversation with me recently. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to collectively look beyond all the good that he did with all the harm [itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s alleged] that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s done.â&#x20AC;?

John-Hall added that among those who feel this way, the strongest concentration of both Cosbyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s critics and devotees are female. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interesting how this breaks down; white women and college educated women seem to believe that Cosby did it, but we talked to a lot of African-American women in the Richard Allen homes who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe it and believe [that his accusers] are trying to set him up. Many African-Americans have been victims of oppression, have been marginalized and disenfranchised and so they already believe that things will never go the way of an African-American because the system is setup to oppress them...especially in the aftermath of seeing [white] people like Roman Polanski, pretty much pardoned for what he did and all the allegations against someone like Woody Allen, who hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even gone to trial.â&#x20AC;?

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m hung on this one too. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think 60 women would just make up a story against Cosby simply for 15 minutes of fame and I do believe that the rape culture in this country is such that to whistleblow could be to the detriment and shame of not just the accuser but their entire family.

But I do also question the spotlight attention Cosby received â&#x20AC;&#x201C; literally round the clock coverage â&#x20AC;&#x201C; while allegations against people like Allen, who apparently raped his own children lives only as lore while he continues to make a living.

I make peace with knowing that at the end of the day, ultimately itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be Bill Cosby that has to sleep nightly tormented with the knowledge that despite all the good heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s done everyone believes heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just a rooďŹ e-popping rapist.

Or not, depending on who you ask. Q

Study gerrymandering in school and chances are youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be looking at a map of Pennsylvania. The 2011 congressional district map is known to cause blurred vision, migraines and political indignation in some. Some female voters are done with that shit. The Pennsylvania League of Women Voters wants the Commonwealth Court to toss it out. In a lawsuit ďŹ led last week, they claim the map gives unconstitutional favor to Republicans in elections across the state by packing the bulk of the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Democrats into just ďŹ ve of the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 18 congressional districts. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s especially noticeable in suburban counties, such as Montgomery, which is chopped up across as many as ďŹ ve districts. Legendary Irish rock band U2 made sure its stop in Philly was uniquely American.

Sunday Bucket List Sunday One man with one less thing to wish for after U2 in Philadelphia

ick Angeline has waited much of his life to see three things come to fruition. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have three bucket lists, just three,â&#x20AC;? a slightly intoxicated Angeline told me as we collectively perspired profusely at Lincoln Financial Field. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To see the Birds win the Super Bowl right here, to have [my 14-year-old son] Nick Jr. graduate college, and see U2 live in concert from the ďŹ&#x201A;oor.â&#x20AC;?

After Sunday, Angeline is one down, two to go.

The Irish rock band arrived on a muggy night in Philadelphia on the 13th stop of a 50-city international tour promoting what is the 30th anniversary of their breakthrough album, The Joshua Tree. Angeline was among 50,000-plus -81(

on hand as the four-man team of drummer Larry Mullen, Jr. bass player Adam Clayton, lead guitarist known only as the Edge and legendary lead singer and human rights activist Bono gave a concert many wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t soon forget.

Opening with fan favorites like their classic â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sunday Bloody Sunday,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Where the Streets Have No Nameâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bad,â&#x20AC;? the band somehow managed to fuse much of their music with a message that seemed to correlate to Philly. The latter with â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bad,â&#x20AC;? in which they related to the rampant opioid abuse plaguing many sections of the city. It was a night which you couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really say the band â&#x20AC;&#x153;rocked the house,â&#x20AC;? as many of their hits with higher BPMs like â&#x20AC;&#x153;Elevationâ&#x20AC;? didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make the cut. Although, they did end the night with a jolt when they dropped â&#x20AC;&#x153;Vertigoâ&#x20AC;? from their 2004 album, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. Surprising, because the band didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stick to tracks from the album (see â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sunday Bloody Sundayâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Badâ&#x20AC;? above, along with â&#x20AC;&#x153;New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Dayâ&#x20AC;?). â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all good theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going throwback with this tour,â&#x20AC;? said Angeline, 52. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m OK with that, these are all the songs I

grew up listening to as Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure it is for a lot of us here tonight.â&#x20AC;?

It was a fair point as the crowd that came for U2 in Philly, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d most likely ďŹ nd on the PTA board of your kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s school or as the organizer of the bake sale at your church. To say â&#x20AC;&#x153;middle agedâ&#x20AC;? was the larger demographic on the night would be an understatement, although you wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know it from all the halter tops, cutoff jeans and slurred speeches walking the concourse at the Linc. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hey, when the kids are away itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to play, man,â&#x20AC;? joked Angeline clutching a Miller Lite tallboy of his own. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m trying to pace myself because I gotta go to work tomorrow, but some of these people are in for a rude awakening tomorrow morning. Plus, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m divorced, here with my buddies so Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not going to complain if one of these lovely ladies down here mistakes me for handsome because theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re banged up. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m actually OK with that.â&#x20AC;?

Bono and Co. had the right mentality with the old school hits, a set list, according to a stadium worker who worked the ďŹ&#x201A;oor at the event, they really wanted to keep under wraps. As he explained, dur-

ing the walk through and soundcheck, the band was extremely upset there were already a few fans in the venue and demanded they be taken out and even walked off stage until the request was granted. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was crazy,â&#x20AC;? the stadium worker who requested to remain anonymous, explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[They] were all pissed that people were already in house when they came out, and their people escorted them off stage. I think they were nervous that someone might ďŹ lm and leak the set list, but it was surprising to see how upset they got.â&#x20AC;?

Perhaps it was due in large part that the elaborate stage setup, which included a catwalk and a massive LED screen, depicted images that once again correlated to the fact this Irish band was doing its best to relate to an American crowd. Like when the screen split to show U2 alongside the Salvation Army brass band or when lines from the Declaration of Independence ran up the screen.

What didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t placate the crowd toward the end, when Bono (as Bono famously does) went political, dissing a few policy decisions by President Trump as it pertained to health care, speciďŹ cally referring to the ďŹ ght against the spread of HIV/AIDS, plugging his RED foundation which has been a catalyst in the ďŹ ght, praising former Presidents George W. Whether it was because of Bono or to beat the trafďŹ c, fans like Angeline said the entire show was worth it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Checking this one off the bucket list,â&#x20AC;? said Angeline. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These dudes are pushing 60 and still killing it. Less than a minute after the doors open, the first regular lumbers in â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a 71-one-year old named Phil with a handlebar mustache and a slight hearing deficit.

Without inquiry, Denise Jovovich, one of the Mayfair barâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s morning bartenders, pours him a glass of cheap beer. News is the roomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only soundtrack: jurors deadlocked in the Bill Cosby trial. Phil watches and sips his drink with a look of satisfaction and inner peace.

Everyone knows the evening bar scene.

But at 7 a.m. nearly every day of the week, at least 30 bars across the Philadelphia open their doors and start pouring drinks to a diverse cross-section of the city, from shakyhanded alcoholics to overnight workers, from coffee drinkers to bereaved funeral goers. I visited seven early-hours bars between ďŹ rst call and noon, had a drink (or two) at each, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m here to tell you how very emotional I am feeling at the moment.

Sorry â&#x20AC;&#x201D; just sorting through these barstool notes for the ďŹ rst time. What sober me is here to tell you is that going to neighborhood bars in the rosy hours after dawn is every bit a fascinating way to see a city as in the evening.

At McKennaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, where mugs of Pabst Blue Ribbon are famously 80 cents a pop, it begins with the retired crowd.

Phil will soon be joined by a 90-yearold neighborhood man named Billy, who walks to McKennaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s from his house every morning, drinks four or ďŹ ve small snifters of Pabst, and does pushups and situps on the barroom ďŹ&#x201A;oor. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an overwhelmingly male-dominated scene â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and not just at this Frankford Avenue waterhole â&#x20AC;&#x201D; hang around and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll assuredly catch the group of elderly women who still come in through the barâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s antiquated LADIES entrance in the back.

By mid-morning, Jovovich says theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have at least six drinkers stretching down the narrow barroom with no place theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d rather be. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People hang out all day,â&#x20AC;? Jovovich says, who works from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. three days

There were 1,442 restaurant liquor licenses in Philly as of 2016, according to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.

For the last several decades, state liquor law has allowed any business with a restaurant liquor license â&#x20AC;&#x201D; which covers everything from lavish steakhouses to neighborhood dive bars â&#x20AC;&#x201D; to start serving booze at 7 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and as early as 9 a.m. on Sundays. At Philadelphia International Airport for an early international ďŹ&#x201A;ight? The good law granteth you booze as early as 5 a.m.

But in Center City and University City, despite the concentration of 24-7 business facilities, there are fewer ďŹ rst call options than there are in this half-mile stretch of the Northeast.

Work overnight in University City?

Spread bagelry isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t your everyday bar, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll mention it because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of the few spots that serves booze at 7 a.m. And over on the east side of Broad Street, Milkboy is one of the few â&#x20AC;&#x201D; or maybe the only bar â&#x20AC;&#x201D; open to third-shift Jefferson Hospital staffers looking to unwind as the rest of the city rolls out of bed.

Five years ago, I spent a summer working the overnight shift at a now-shuttered diner. Us third shifters would hand off the aprons to the morning crew around 7 a.m., feeling equal parts weary and wired.

Happy hour called, but whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s open? I frequented quite a number of morning bars in the River Wards, as well as some the famed South Philly haunts like Rayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Happy Birthday Bar â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a place that some joke never closes.

But put Rayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s aside for a moment.

South Philly still has, bar none, the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most prodigious morning selection.

At Fireside Tavern on Oregon Avenue near 6th Street, ďŹ ve people chat around a circular bar beneath signs with catty messages like TIPPING IS NOT A TOWN IN CHINA and IF YOUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;RE DRINKING TO FORGET, PLEASE PAY IN ADVANCE. Shortly after I sit down, a man who is feeling very good and whose name I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t quite understand forcefully gifts me with damn near an entire box of Tastykake Jelly Krimpets. Is the morning crowd more generous than the evening crowd? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only 9:30 a.m. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; still too early to tell.

Another patron is a young-looking retired postal worker who lives in Jersey.

He found Fireside on his commute home from the city for so many years. Now, he still comes back in the morning one or two days a week to hang with the manager, Tommy. He shoots the shit. He reads the reads the paper. He smokes cigarettes in 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

the A/C and heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s smiling the whole time.

Why go out of his way for this? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Philly folks, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing like them,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Jersey people are kind of uptight.â&#x20AC;?

The more time â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and drinks â&#x20AC;&#x201D; in South Philly, the more I hear stories that defy easily identiďŹ able types of morning drinkers.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a quick Lyft ride north to Michaelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Place at 11th and MifďŹ&#x201A;in.

Nicky Chrysler, a retired car salesman turned bartender, highlights one of the stranger morning routines at his bar: a crowd of 15 or 20 people dressed in all black walk into the bar early in the morning and order a round of shots. It happens maybe once or twice a month.

Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to or coming from a funeral at one of the areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s churches.

A bit further north, Bonnieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Capistrano Bar just started opening its doors at 7 a.m. a few years back. The bartender, John (no last name given), has even more stories about the variety of the morning crowd he sees in South Philly.

One girl regularly comes in dressed for the ofďŹ ce. She orders a double bourbon on the rocks. Sometimes a single after that, depending on the day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think she doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really like her job,â&#x20AC;? John says. Another guy at the bar nods knowingly. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been there, too.

Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going through various morning shifts that have stood out over the last few months, and he stops on the day after Donald Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s election in November.

The gloom of that day in liberal strongholds like Philadelphia was well-reported.

People called out of work, and you can guess where droves of them went. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had almost a full bar,â&#x20AC;? John recalled. â&#x20AC;&#x153;No one was celebrating. One girl was crying.â&#x20AC;?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy to romanticize drinking at this time of day for those who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do it regularly. The truth is that most of the conversation is as repetitive and predictable as youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll ďŹ nd in at any happy hour or last call. People bitch about parking and taxes.

They laugh and cry and swap stories of better mornings.

But the morning bar is there for those who need it, in good times and bad, although especially in bad. Q

ART Who are the artists that inspire you?

I [recently returned] from France from a meeting where we were sourcing for fresh artists and I was fortunate enough to have some time to go to the [Centre Pompidou] in the afternoon. I have always been a big fan of the movement from [Pablo] Picasso and really...Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d say the beginning and the evolution of the modern period. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where you have impressionism and artists like Cezanne and all of the classic French painters that inďŹ&#x201A;uenced the period so heavily, moving into the passion and emotion of [Henri de] Toulouse-Lautrec and [Wassily] Kandinsky. But I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t say that I went into this inspired by those artists speciďŹ cally because I am not a painter, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really more about how the art makes me feel. It makes me feel happy and makes me feel good and helping people to ďŹ nd pieces that will make them feel the same way and make their space beautiful is really why I got into this business. Someone walking out the door excited about a purchase is really a true measure of inspiration for me.

ebbie Morton doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t own an art gallery.

Well, she does in the literal sense, but to this Penn grad, her Center City gallery, Carre dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Artistes, is 1,000 square feet of artistic possibility and inspiration. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s that same inspiration which found Morton â&#x20AC;&#x201C; daughter of Arnie Morton, founder of Mortonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Steakhouse and -81(

Peter Morton, co-founder of the Hard Rock Cafe â&#x20AC;&#x201C; detaching herself from the family business of launching restaurants and attaching herself to the French inspired worldwide chain of galleries that caters to lovers of ďŹ ne art, who also love keeping a few extra bucks in their pocket.

Recently, PW caught up with Morton to discuss, among other things, blazing her own trail through offering beauty for those on a budget.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s evident art is your passion but you come from a family of restaurateurs and megaminds in the food industry. Why didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t you follow suit?

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a good question. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve asked myself that same question at various times in my life. My dad founded [the original] Mortonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s [Steakhouse] in Chicago...my brother co-founded and created the Hard Rock Cafe at 21-years-old and my other brother and sister both have restaurants throughout the country. I am a total food junkie and I love restaurants, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always been less operations oriented and more design oriented and I think what I saw growing up that operations is 99 percent of the [restaurant] business, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s that 1 percent of implementing the idea and the design that goes into the creation of a restaurant that I enjoyed the most.

I was a ďŹ lmmaker too for 15 years and then jumped into art...I think owning and operating this studio is the best of both because there is a very detailed operations and management aspect, but from it comes this beautiful collection of great artwork from some fabulous artists.

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the art (buying) market like here in Philadelphia, speciďŹ cally as it pertains to French art like what you have here in store?

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re really structured and geared towards turning the traditional [art] gal-

lery model on its head. When you walk in what youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to see is a super approachable, super accessible, really friendly and open environment. As we are a contemporary art gallery inspired

by French in concept, but weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re deďŹ nitely more of an international venue and space.

Philadelphians have been extremely excited, in my opinion, about the possibility of owning a really beautiful piece of art that they can afford. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re priced differently, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re laid out differently, we exhibit up to 15 [pieces] at one time as opposed to one or two. We have about 600 rotating pieces in stock and from all different artists and the people that come in are genuinely excited over what we have to offer.

Is it in large part because you may be one of the few places in Philly offering ďŹ ne art for those on a budget?

Yes! You know, I was always wary about using the word affordable as it pertains to ďŹ ne art because I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to cheapen [what we have] in any way, but the fact is we sell incredibly beautiful high quality artwork that is really, really affordable. We sell seven different sizes at seven different price points. In an art gallery, typically you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the prices posted but here every artist has a bin and in there you can ďŹ nd various sizes ranging from $97 [all the way up to] $569. Our larger format pieces are yes, more expensive but still very affordable for even the most casual of ďŹ ne art buyer.

In spite of its beauty, speaking honestly art isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always the easiest sell. Were there any moments where you questioned if opening Carre dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Artistes was the smartest idea?

I always wanted to have my own business and I hope to have a few more in the future, but in starting any new business you incur a signiďŹ cant amount of risk, right? For right now, with three kids this felt like what I needed to be doing and it felt manageable because Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m working with so many incredible people which makes it a lot of fun. But I am a startup, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re just two years old so yeah, we deal with having great highs and then you have to get through all the ripples and realities of owning a gallery. Art is not like selling cars, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard [and] itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a challenge, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s deďŹ nitely been worthwhile. Philly teachers finally have a contract in place but could the payout potentially mean layoffs or budget cuts elsewhere?

fter four years without a contract and ďŹ ve without a raise, Philadelphia teachers have voted this week to ratify a new labor deal with the city.

Some are breathing a mixed sigh of relief â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but not without lingering concerns.

George Bezanis, the Central High School social studies teacher behind the various publicity stunts that drew attention to the contract stalemate, said he felt the vote was a â&#x20AC;&#x153;yes, butâ&#x20AC;? vote. The new contract contains the bare minimum that many unionized teachers would accept, but he felt some voted reluctantly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Personally I think that if this agreement came out four years ago right when our contract expired, it would have been a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;noâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; vote,â&#x20AC;? Bezanis said after Monday nightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s meeting with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers at the Liacouras Center. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But after four years, people are tired of this acrimony. They want to get back to working. They donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want [the contract battle] hanging over their heads.â&#x20AC;?

The three-year contractâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s price tag is about $395 million. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot of mon3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

ey the district doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have budgeted for teachers. To pay for the hundreds of millions, the district will require additional funding from the city or state. So far, no additional ďŹ nancial commitments have been made from either government.

Worst case scenario: more layoffs.

The new contract, which will run through 2020, includes some retroactive pay increases for teachersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; salaries that have been frozen since 2012, but many concerns remain. Bezanis said some teachers were hoping to see language that addressed class sizes and the working condition in the buildings, such as heat. â&#x20AC;&#x153;While I know this new contract does not make you entirely whole, I am conďŹ dent that teachers, administrators and families will make greater strides in improving how our children learn and thrive in Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s public schools,â&#x20AC;?

Mayor Jim Kenney said in a statement.

Jerry Jordan, president of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, said he was pleased with the agreement, but a spokesman did not return a request for additional comment. Now the contract heads to the School Reform Commission, where it is largely expected to pass.

As the Inquirer reported, many teach-

ers spent the weekend digesting the terms of the contract that were released to them on June 17. Teachers were asked not to speak to the press until after the vote had been made. On Sunday, the Caucus of Working Educators, the activist group Bezanis helps steer within the PFT, a group that has also challenged Jordanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leadership within the union, held some â&#x20AC;&#x153;contract crunch teamsâ&#x20AC;? to comb through the pact under short notice. The caucus agreed not to have an ofďŹ cial â&#x20AC;&#x153;yesâ&#x20AC;? or â&#x20AC;&#x153;noâ&#x20AC;? position on the vote.

While the caucus ultimately supported the contract, its members expressed some dismay at the PFTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lack of discussion before the actual vote. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Unfortunately, the meeting consisted of a video, a PowerPoint presentation, and a move to call for a vote while dozens of members were still waiting to speak, with no opportunity to ask questions or gain the clarity we were hoping for,â&#x20AC;? wrote CWE co-chair Kelly Collings.

What would happen if teachers had voted â&#x20AC;&#x153;noâ&#x20AC;??

Chief among the fears is the district would renege on its offer and negotiations would return to square one. Moreover, with a contentious governorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s race slated for next year, there are also fears about a Republican unseating Gov. Tom Wolf in Harrisburg, and what that could mean for the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ scal sanity. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the fear factor,â&#x20AC;? T

his yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Philly Gay Pride marks 29 years celebrating a continued effort for equality.

The ďŹ rst was a march from Rittenhouse to Independence National Historic Park in 1972, though itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worth noting in 1965 Philly was also the home of the ďŹ rst American gay rights protest. We were also the ďŹ rst city to hold a Coming Out commemoration too, with 1995â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inaugural Outfest. At that event, the â&#x20AC;&#x153;gay ghettoâ&#x20AC;? of midtown was given the nickname, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Gayborhood.â&#x20AC;?

This patch of center city streets was notably full of businesses that marketed as being gay-owned and operated or LGBT friendly.

Queers from all over could gather in the vicinity of 13th and Locust to shop, party and ďŹ nd community. Thanks to the tireless efforts of activists, it has become safer to be openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgen -81(

der in Philly. Queer people are freer to live, work and play outside the gayborhood.

This advancement has come at a cost to the businesses that relied upon queer clientele and now must compete with the upscale stores and restaurants slipping into the rapidly gentrifying neighborhood.

Much has changed not only since the ďŹ rst Outfest, but in the last few years.

Recently, noted gayborhood events producer Josh Schonewolf posted a Facebook status asking â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something about the Philly Gayborhood that you miss, that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t exist anymore?â&#x20AC;? and it resulted in a ďŹ&#x201A;urry of replies, as did a follow up post I made asking for more opinions. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Some respondents mourned the passing of gay bars such as Venture Inn, Bump, Key West, Uncles and Westbury, while others fondly recalled restaurants such as Duck Soup (later Cheap Arts), Judyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cafe and

Commenters reminisced about the huge dance ďŹ&#x201A;oor, the Thursday night drink special with free buffet, the notorious dĂŠcor.

Jessa Jordan If itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s any consolation, Toasted Walnut is trying to be a womxn oriented space. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; This prompted a number of subthreads about the lack of spaces for queer women in the community. Some pointed out gay men might simply still not be safe to party just anywhere, others pointed to the income disparity that leaves queer women with less disposable income than their male counterparts.

There were other comments that speciďŹ cally pointed to the type of people who were replacing the previous occupants.

As the conversation became more meta, community members began to talk about what could be possible for a sustainable queer neighborhood.

It is thanks to activists such as Gloria Casarez that we have so many advancements, both symbolic and demonstrable.

Between the marches, giant rainbow and trans ďŹ&#x201A;ags over City Hall, and the anti-discrimination ordinances, Philadelphia has been a leader in LGBT rights in America.

Keiper and Co. Philly actress Alex Keiper goes cabaret and brings some new friends along

A

long with a 2017 (so far) thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s included riveting adventurous drama (Hand to God, Buzzer) and a dryly hilarious Chekhov takeoff with occasional song (Stupid Fucking Bird), Philadelphia actor Alex Keiper has made her bones at the Arden Theatre with contemporary classic musicals (The Secret Garden, Metamorphoses and A Little Night Music) that puts the brunette baritone at the forefront of modern traditionalists.

However, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s changed her own game as late not only by assaying the axe-wielding lead of Lizzie Borden in a murderous, new rock-out musical (Lizzie), but, now as the-too-young-to-be-spiritual-godmother to an even newer brood of songstresses all making their ďŹ rst attempts at cabaret.

World, meet Alex Keiper and the Next Generation Cabaret at The Studio Theatre inside the Ardenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hamilton Family Arts -81(

Center running, June 23-24. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lizzie was liberating in many ways, though maybe not how youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d expect,â&#x20AC;? says Keiper of the late winter 2017 show for 11th Hour Productions that put her out front, on stage, in a manner closer to Kathleen Hannah than Carol Channing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As a performer, it was liberating because I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have time to stop and think, I was responsible for so much of the show that I just had to keep moving forward and act on instinct. I could be present in each moment. As a vocalist, Lizzie showed me that I have a lot more range and control than I thought I did. It was like climbing Everest every night.â&#x20AC;?

Here, Keiper mentions several of her clear-and-present inďŹ&#x201A;uences (e.g. Alanis Morissette) and some not-so-obvious entries (Linda Eder) and the desire to tell a story for an audience. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As an actor, through Lizzie, I was given permission to live in a dark place. And when you live

in that place, ďŹ lled with fear and confusion, you also learn to ďŹ nd joy, humor and power there. That is my favorite kind of place for a character to live in, because you ďŹ nd astonishing new impulses and perspectives.â&#x20AC;?

Refocus that same character, impulses and perspectives around to the self and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the raison dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;etre of cabaret at large, a genre driven by big personal reveals. So when the Arden approached Keiper and asked her if she wanted to do her own cabaret as part of its Hamilton Center series (the likes of Ben Dibble and Jeff Coon have done as much so far), she considered the possibility, but, just didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have much desire to do a show about â&#x20AC;&#x153;me. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m just not sure what I have to say yet.â&#x20AC;?

Now, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s refreshing: someone selfless in the selďŹ e generation.

What was more interesting to her was the idea of hosting a cabaret for the next generation of musical theater performers; â&#x20AC;&#x153;the expansion of our community and the best way to do that is to invest in our young artists,â&#x20AC;? says Keiper.

The original concept given to Keiper by the Arden was for a young, all-female cabaret. As the new host and curator started to conceptualize the show, Keiper realized â&#x20AC;&#x153;we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t talk about gender inequality without including the genderqueer community,â&#x20AC;? she says.

So now the list of Alex Keiper and the Next Generation Cabaret includes women and genderqueer artists; singers chosen by the host for a number of reasons, but mainly because no two performances are alike. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wanted a group of individuals because that is what is being celebrating in the theater world right now; weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve all become a little bored with the cookie-cutter performer. These people are strange and funny and full of empathy and hope. I also wanted to highlight people who really havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been seen by the mainstream audiences yet.â&#x20AC;?

She continued: â&#x20AC;&#x153;These artists work in the box ofďŹ ce, teach summer camps and sell concessions.

I used to work concessions at the Arden before I got my ďŹ rst show there in 2011, and I know how many amazing people are supporting the company by helping out in any way they can. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m happy to help them out now. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve also got two students from Temple University who will be performing. One that has been a private student of mine for many years now, Madi Juleskusky, and another that came very, very highly recommended, ChelseaAnn Jones.â&#x20AC;?

Keiper will be performing several songs, each one a different style: one a classic musical theater standard, one, a contemporary pop/rock song where she will accompany herself on the ukulele and the last one a song by one of those awesome ladies that she claims is one of her early musical inďŹ&#x201A;uences. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know where cabaret should go, but I do know that this generation will require more than a nice song and a pat on the back,â&#x20AC;? says Keiper. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They are looking to change the rules on what weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re allowed to do in the theater.

Welcome to The Color Run, an annual event now heading into year seven that has made for really great social media photos both before, during and at the completion of this 3.1-mile stretch of unicorn-themed goodness.

Delicious craft cocktails and a unique vibe found the Franklin Bar celebrating its eighth anniversary last weekend.

Lightning in a glass: Franklin Mortgage celebrates eight years of craft cocktails If you are a cocktail geek, this is pretty much the ďŹ rst place to go to in Philly,â&#x20AC;? said Jason Elliot, general manager of The Franklin Mortgage & Investment Company.

Over the past eight years, the bar has been known as a subterranean speakeasy. Antithetical to speakeasies, the Franklin Bar (112 S. 18th St.) recently added a sign, albeit small. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We don't really push the speakeasy image like we used to,â&#x20AC;? Elliot explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think people are more interested in just bars with really good cocktails and less of the dramatics.â&#x20AC;?

Elliot has a point. Staying true to the creation of delicious craft cocktails and a vibe that is somehow uniquely original despite trying to replicate the past found the Franklin celebrating its eighth anniversary on June 18.

And celebrate this spot plans to do, with an unveiling of a new cocktail menu.

Although the bar is no longer trying to capture the hidden quality of a speakeasy, they â&#x20AC;&#x153;don't do anything to deter that attitude.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what people expect out of the place,â&#x20AC;? Elliot continued. The Franklin Mortgage & Investment Company was named in tribute to Philly gangster Max â&#x20AC;&#x153;Boo Booâ&#x20AC;?

Hoff, who headed the largest alcohol running ring, under the guise of an investment company, during Prohibition. Elliot said that they wanted to keep the historical spirit of the place, but focus more on drinks than a theme. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The only real difference is that there is a bit more marketing going on. We try

to reach out to the press more,â&#x20AC;? Elliot joked.

To drum up more business and publicity, a few years back the bar renovated its upstairs room, which used to house overďŹ&#x201A;ow weekend customers, into a tiki bar.

The tiki bar, which Elliot said was inspired following a trip to Belize, is fully equipped with all things tropical â&#x20AC;&#x201D; grass thatch, colored twinkle lights, leis, paper umbrellas, and even a brass pineapple punch bowl. And while, according to Elliot the upstairs bar has been a hit with locals, he afďŹ rmed that â&#x20AC;&#x153;downstairs will always be more popular.â&#x20AC;?

And why? â&#x20AC;&#x153;The bread and butter is between 25 and 35, [plus] we get a lot of hipsters,â&#x20AC;? he said.

But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the amount of work and detail that goes into each cocktail â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the ingredients, how to serve, what you could conceivably pair it with â&#x20AC;&#x201C; that all comes into play before it ever reaches the front of the house.

According to Elliot, every other week the bar team gets together to discuss alcohol and to make new cocktails. The bar does not have a food menu, but does provide peanuts, charcuterie and arguably one of the best cocktail menus in the city. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The guys do a lot of experimenting, they fool around with a lot of different ingredients,â&#x20AC;? said Elliot. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Each menu costs about $4,000 to $5,000 in research, in terms of just burning off liquor and trying different things.â&#x20AC;? The fight for medical care wages on with Action Wellness leading the charge

round this time last year, the non-proďŹ t organization Action Wellness, formerly known as ActionAIDS, underwent a re-

brand. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Today, the reality is that people with AIDS can achieve wellness.â&#x20AC;? That was the message delivered by Kevin Burns, the organizationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s executive director. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want this rebranding and renaming process to make people with HIV feel that we were abandoning them. We want to expand and provide more services for them as well as for other people with chronic illness.â&#x20AC;?

Now as the LGBT+ community celebrates pride month, Kevin Burns and his team at Action Wellness, continue the ďŹ ght to provide medical care to those suffering from HIV/AIDS and chronic illnesses. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have to celebrate what we have accomplished, but then recommit to resisting and continuing to stand up for what we know is right,â&#x20AC;? said Burns, who has been with the organization on one capacity or another for the past 28 years.

Founded in 1986, Action Wellness serves approximately 4,000 people per year and has a range of free medical and social services available for those living with or predisposed to HIV/AIDS as well as other chronic illnesses.

Services include: case management, medical and pregnancy care, emotional support, employment and educational resources, and a prison program for those incarcerated or released.

One of the latest programs is Club 1509, which focuses on providing men and transgender people of color preventative medication against HIV, as well as educational, housing, and employment resources. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Those are populations that experience a lot of stigma and have a lot of historical issues trusting medical providers as well as social service providers,â&#x20AC;? Burns said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So it is a population that has been traumatized, if you will, so they need more support to ďŹ rst off, feel entitled to services.â&#x20AC;?

A noble concept considering the CDC reported that in 2015, Black and African American gay and bisexual men made up the largest number of HIV diagnoses (10,315) in the United States. HIV can still be a deadly disease, especially if people are not able to access the care needed, a message that Burns admitted could be better publicized. In the CDC report, 1.1 million

Americans are estimated to be living with HIV, and 1-in-7 are unaware of their HIV positive status. According to the report, HIV directly caused 6,721 deaths in 2014.

Burns described the services Action Wellness provides to combat the spread of HIV as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;holisticâ&#x20AC;? approach to treating patients. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most of our clients are living signiďŹ cantly below the poverty level,â&#x20AC;? Burns explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Finding safe, affordable housing for people is a top priority for us, because if they are living on the streets or in shelters, they are not likely staying connected with primary care, they are not likely taking their medications. Poor people with chronic illness, they are also more disproportionately represented with HIV. A lot of folks, who keep me awake at night, are HIV positive and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know it, because they are not getting treatment and they are not going to achieve that chronic illness sort of status with HIV.â&#x20AC;?

Another thing keeping Burns awake at night are the proposed budget cuts the Trump Administration have made to federally fund these types of services. Action Wellness lobbies congress 2-3 times a year with CAEAR Coalition, a national advocacy organization for emergency AIDS relief. While the organization usually heads to Washington, D.C., this summer they will lobby congress members when they are back in Philadelphia on break. Now, their main goal is to secure level funding from the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, a federal fund for HIV-related services.

But to that, Burns responded: â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are holding our breath.â&#x20AC;?

According to Burns and Sarah DeLaurentis, director of development and communications, Action Wellness has focused on supplementing from government contracts with grants from private foundations and pharmaceutical companies. DeLaurentis explained that they accept individual donations and their biggest fundraising event is Dining Out For Life, a citywide event where participating restaurants donate a third of their proceeds from the day. The projected amount from the annual April event seems to be around $200,000, in line with what they have raised in the past.

When asked what motivated Burns to work in this career ďŹ eld, he said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Very early in the epidemic and all through the early years, I lost a lot of very dear friends to AIDS.â&#x20AC;? Before becoming an employee, he volunteered in the buddy program, which provides one-on-one emotional and practical care, to â&#x20AC;&#x153;memorializeâ&#x20AC;? those he lost. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I was a case manager [at Action Wellness], it was not unusual to have two or three clients a week dieâ&#x20AC;Ś[but] we are not about to give up. This perfect, sneaky guy who makes you feel like a loser and a hussy? He told you he was in an open relationship on your second date. Veaux advocates ethical polyamoryâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s right there in the title of his bookâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; and he thinks this guy did you wrong by not disclosing his partnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s existence right away. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Making a nonmonogamous relationship work requires a commitment to communication, honesty, and transparency,â&#x20AC;? said Veaux. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Concealing the fact that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in a relationship is a big violation of all three, and no good will come of it.â&#x20AC;?

I have a slightly different take. Straight women in open relationships have an easier time ďŹ nding men willing to fuck and/or date them; their straight male counterparts have a much more difďŹ cult time. Stigma and double standards are at work hereâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sexually adventurous; heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a cheating bastardâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and waiting to disclose the fact that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re poly (or kinky or HIV-positive or a cammer) is a reaction to/work-around for that. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a violation of poly best practices, like Veaux says, but the stigma is a violation, too. Waiting to disclose your partner, kink, HIV status, etc., can prompt the other person to weigh their assumptions and prejudices about poly/kinky/ poz people against the living, breathing person theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve come to know. Still, disclosure needs to come earlyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;within a date or two, certainly before anyone gets fuckedâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;so the other person can bail if poly/kinky/poz is a deal breaker. Q
