Mea culpa, only a little... KERITH GABRIEL

n our May 31 issue, I penned a column entitled, “More New Friends,” shedding a spotlight on the fact that more people than you might realize will spend a fairly good chunk of change on a season ticket for their favorite team. That’s in one, singular ticket. Apparently, my notion of suggesting that might seem a sad reality didn’t take too well with a few people, who actually offered some pretty decent insight into why I might be – to coin Bob Uecker – “just a bit outside,” with this claim. Take this reader for instance, who sent this via email on June 4. I was initially intrigued by your article “More New Friends,” and thought I would be reading an insightful piece about people who spend time alone. I was thoroughly disappointed when I read the line “It’s sad.” Perhaps, with a little bit of research, you would have discovered that a (not small) portion of the population enjoys spending time alone. As someone who regularly dines out by myself, goes to movies and shows alone, I can tell you that it is not at all sad. Most of the time, it’s a relief. For people like me, social activities tend to drain our energy. We like being with others, but in limited doses. We crave alone time. Reading a book while someone serves me drinks and dinner is incredibly relaxing, and I love not having to worry about making conversation or paying attention to others. I have friends, plenty of the them, and we always have a good time together (last Saturday’s [noon] lunch turned into a four hour festival, and I didn’t get back to my apartment until dinner time). The point here is that some people CHOOSE to spend time alone. And it is most definitely PHILADELPHIAWEEKLY.COM

not sad. I highly suggest that you try going to a game or dinner or some other “social” function by yourself. You may just discover how liberating the experience is. Warmest Regards, Dawn OK, so Dawn makes a really good point, but in my opinion a bit off. Too be honest, it’s my fault as the previous column didn’t factor in the cost of sitting solo in a ballpark for an entire season. Take a Phillies game for instance, which is the team I referred to in the previous column. According the team’s ticketing website, the cheapest seat in the house, the terrace deck (section 430-434, hell, call it nosebleeds) goes for $1,296. To get on TV and be seen in the background of the game, you have to sit lower level. Those seats start at over $2,000 apiece and if you can afford to sit behind the batter’s box then you’re looking at well over $10k to sit solo. This season, the Eagles raised their prices by as much as $15 dollars a ticket depending on section, Flyers season ticket plans start at $1.5k and if you want to go through the “Process” with the Sixers, it’ll cost you at minimum $902. Look, I’ve gone to the movies solo, I’ve held a job where I had to travel and have had many dinners solo and to Dawn’s point, it is liberating. But I don’t think I’d ever spend that kind of money to sit by myself at a function. Again, to each their own, it’s not my place to tell someone how to spend their hard earned dough, as I’d never have anyone instruct me on how to spend mine, but I don’t think I’m the only one who would think spending $2k to have some alone time seems a little pricey. Obituary for Little Pete’s, 1978-2017 Little Pete’s, beloved diner, closed its doors last week after nearly 40 years in business. Little Pete’s is survived by thousands of drunken club-goers mopping up Fireball shots with flapjack batter and griddled meats, by thousands of coffee drinkers, by lonely breakfast eaters, by famished families, the pisspoor and well-to-do, the joyous and dispossessed, by Philadelphians of every stripe. Only in Philly moments like… When Wawa files a federal lawsuit against a convenience chain for possible infringement – and won. If you don’t know the story, a Korean store owner in Paterson, N.J., opened DaWA, which we suppose kind of sounds like Wawa (sort of). DaWA’s owner, Mike Han, said he’d been using the name, which in Korean means “everyone is welcome,”for three years before Wawa caught wind, but to that Wawa said too damn bad and filed suit in January. On Monday, Wawa quietly won the suit forcing Han to change the name of his store in 90 days or pay the bird $12,000 in damages. We’d look at this one as frivolous, but the “W” is the label that feeds Philly. So we offer congrats and ask that in celebration Wawa offer free hoagies for the day. ■ 4

Oh fights back If you see At-Large Councilman David Oh around town this week, buy that man a beer. Make that a case of beer. Or tea. Whatever the guy wants, to be honest. The two-term legislator was knifed outside his Southwest Philly home last week in an apparent carjacking attempt. After one night in the hospital and one day of rest, in true Philadelphian style, Oh was back to work in City Hall. The suspect, 24-year-old Shawn Yarbray, turned himself into police Saturday morning at the urging of his family. We’re trying really hard not to close this segment out with an “Oh” pun — OK? ■

Oh, shut up! – Defense attorney Ryan Hyde, who is hoping to keep alleged sex abuser Lee Kaplan out of prison. Unease at Congreso Protesters gathered outside of the largest Latino social service organization in the city to call for the resignation of Congreso CEO Carolina Cabrera DiGiorgio. The outcry was sparked by a Philadelphia Weekly report last month about DiGiorgio’s attendance at a Trump rally in Harrisburg in late April. DiGiorgio, who could be seen clearly at the rally in the stands behind the president, is married to PA GOP Chairman Val DiGiorgio. In the wake of the report, dozens of immigrantadvocacy and social justice organizations have called for her resignation. ■

$200,000 That’s how much it might cost Montgomery County to sequester jurors for the duration of Bill Cosby’s trial, according to a WHYY Newsworks report. Due to the high-profile nature of the case, Cosby’s defense team has pulled a seldom-used maneuver that keeps jurors sealed off from the outside world so as to not be tainted by news reports and public discussion. “Unless you’ve been living under a rock, the message that has been promoted, in insidious fashion, is that Bill Cosby is guilty and that Bill Cosby is a serial rapist,” Cosby’s defense attorney Brian McMonagle said, justifying the practice. ■ JUNE 7 - 14, 2017

Independence is truly the one liberating thing about being your own boss. Well, that and not having to take shit from anyone. Bobby Ray Simmons, 28, known around the world simply as “B.O.B.”, was a five-time Top 10 pick on both the Billboard Top 100 and Billboard Top 200. He’s performed for sold-out crowds and with mega stars, arguably none bigger than his collaboration with singer Bruno Mars in 2010 to produce the smash single “Nothin’ on You,” a song that soared to No. 1 in both the U.S. and U.K. and arguably put B.O.B. on the map. But on the weight of a major record label, or someone else’s name. This trip is an opportunity to change all that and before his stop at Kung Fu Necktie in Fishtown on June 9, he spoke with PW on going the solo route, success as a blessing – and a curse and the impression he hopes both his devout fans and first timers get from his sound when the dust settles on this tour. 6

Without revealing too much about the show, I definitely have things in store for the audience and specifically designed it this way. Philly is one of those places that I don’t get to come to that often. I like to get up, close and personal with all of my fans especially my core fan base, which is why I’m excited to perform at Kung Fu Necktie, [because] it’s such an intimate venue. This whole journey to make this new album and to [go on the Elements Tour], has been all about exciting my core fan base.

After having multiple Billboard Top 10 hits and having collaborations with a lot of top names, you’ve decided to step away from that and do this one on your own. Is there more comfort in being more underground?

Having so much mainstream success and just what goes into that level of fame it really is a lot. I just want to find my own definition of success and I’m able to be more independent and have creative control over what I’m doing, which is kind of what I was doing the whole time, minus the major looks. I just want to A&R my own projects and try to break the mold of my own sound, and look to reinvent myself. There’s a lot more comfort in being independent now that I’m at my own pace. But I will say this: as much success

as I have had, the public has never seen me in full stride, yet.

So are you saying that the Elements Tour in a way is B.O.B.’s coming out party?

Yeah, absolutely. [This tour is] all about the old B.O.B. and the new B.O.B. at the same time. The direction I’m headed in [now], no one has ever seen me like this. I’m a very strategic person about what I like to do and how I like to make music, so there are great things on the horizon.

You’ve been on a bunch of major labels which comes with a level of support. Now going out on your own is it harder to do it all on your own or are you actually finding it to be easier?

I’m still affiliated with [rapper Cliff “T.I.P.” Harris’ label] Grand Hustle Records; and the relationship that T.I.P. and I have built over the years nothing can break that. But like I was getting at earlier is that with this, what I’m doing for myself and what me and my team have put together, we’ve always had to sell the label like this is where we’re going. We had to sell them with “Cloud Nine,” we had to sell them with “Haters,” we had to do it with “I Be in the Sky.” The song “Nothing on You” was a great success but I had to come back and show what I got with [singles like] “I’m Still in this Bitch,” and “Headbandz.” These were all songs and all records that the [labels] didn’t necessarily want from me after “Nothing on You,” but I felt like I needed to show what I can do.

Were you ever afraid or even leery that because “Nothin’ on You” had such mega success that you could’ve been typecast as a certain type of rapper? You know, to be perfectly honest, I really wasn’t 100 percent that song was going to be all that huge. I figured it might get some spins but nothing like [the level it got to]. See, you have to understand that in this industry, people use term ‘hit record’ more than they use the term, ‘hi’ or ‘hello,’ you know? So when someone says to you that you have a hit record, you want to believe it but you’re cautious. But people really responded to that record. Sure, I did feel like it may have typecast me for a while, but that was so many years ago. Unless you live under a rock in the middle of the ocean and have only heard “Nothin’ on You,” and want an indicator of what type of rapper I am, then that’s the only way you wouldn’t know at this point what I’m about.

B.O.B: By The Numbers This week, rapper B.O.B. heads to Philadelphia in what will be the second stop on an 35-venue, completely independent national tour. Stepping away from the limelight and going this one on his own merit, here’s a quick look at the mainstream numbers this Georgia-based lyricist has racked up. The number of artists B.O.B. has signed to his independent label, No Genre. Two will accompany him on his trip to Philadelphia in London Jae and Jaque Beatz.

How excited then are you for this tour and what in your mainstream time would something like this compare to?

This tour kind of feels like a victory lap for all of the core fans that have been with me and have followed me through thick and thin. Coming to this moment to be independent and now going on this tour, you know everything is inhouse. My relationships with this one are all [established] on my own. It’s just a great feeling. It’s a concert, but it also feels like I’m doing an independent B.O.B. party in each city that I’m going to.

Know you’re here for a short time, but anything you’re looking to do while you’re here in Philly? Not sure if you heard, but our restaurant scene is ridiculous. I haven’t been to Philly much, but everyone tells me that your food scene is ridiculous. Bruh, that’s always what I’m excited about. Good food? Yeah, I’m sold just on that.

What do you hope that the fans who came out to hear you learn about B.O.B. and your sound at the end of this whirlwind “Elements Tour?”

I started the [record label] “No Genre” specifically for the fact that there really is no genre that categorizes my music. I hope that this tour demonstrates that. Even if you aren’t a fan of my music, and you just somehow end up end up at a B.O.B. concert, I promised you’ll be thoroughly entertained and you just might go out and buy the album at the end of the show. ■ B.O.B: “The Elements Tour” | 7pm. $33. ean-pole lanky and decked out in his trademark black suit, Nick Cave has always addressed a live setting with the manic vigor of a teen Baptist preacher and the wriggle of a tube sock in the wind. Cave – and his subtle, but ardent Bad Seeds – ply their way through the most literate looks at darkness (bad romance, violent circumstance) since Leonard Cohen. However, when true gray-to-black life rears its ugly head, Cave and company take a slightly different tack as witnessed in Monday’s show at the Electric Factory in (late) support of “Skeleton Tree” – the crooner-author’s elegantly elegiac album recorded in the wake of the 2015 sudden death of his son, Arthur. Things got vicious as is Cave’s fondness – the stammering discord of the epic “From Her to Eternity,” the chimes-banging blues of “Red Right Hand,” the nervy “Stagger Lee,” the ripping panic of “The Mercy Seat.” The Seeds revved and windmilled around the stage, with Cave bounding into the front rows. His bruised, baritone voice cackled. His words delivered their usual worry, decay and dismay

with gusto. It would be remiss to not mention multi-instrumentalist Warren Ellis’ wide-ranging guitar riffs on “Mermaids.” It was, however, the softer, malleted songs of “Skeleton Tree” and its immediate mid-tempo predecessor, “Push the Sky Away” that were most stirring during this two hour-plus concert. Starting with the unsettling, piano-led hush of “Anthracene” and its dear poetic (Whitmanesque, really) look at nature and loss, Cave was at his most poignant. There was the slow tango of “Jesus Alone” and “Magneto,” followed by the plaintive anthem “Into My Arms” and its clever call to an interventionist God. Then there was the ache of the Charles Aznavour-meets-Angelo Badalamenti whoosh of “Girl in Amber” and its “little blue-eyed boy” lyric. Finally, the one-two gutpunch of “Distant Sky” and “Skeleton Tree” found Cave “calling out, calling out” over an endless sea only to have the “echo come back empty.” Beautiful, solemn and lost – this was a new level of rangy emotion fans of Nick Cave witnessed at the Electric Factory Monday night. ith the sad, but inevitable (at least for the last six months) closing of the famed 24-hour Little Pete’s Diner at 17th and Chancellor streets on Memorial Day, another blow has been struck to an already lackluster scenario: downtown’s late-night dining scene. “There used to be the MidTowns, the Eagle, the Eagle 2, so many more,” says Steven Wigod, an accountant who regularly flies between Fort Lauderdale and Philly who returned just to get a last taste 10 JUNE 7 - 14, 2017

of Little Pete’s. “I’ll miss the late nights.” So will Karen Karuza, a professor at The Art Institute of Philadelphia. “I used to eat here (Little Pete’s) when I was a fashion student,” she says. “It’s just one more Philadelphia way-of-life that’s disappearing.” That’s not counting the Snow White in Old City and Diner on the Square off Rittenhouse Square. There are but a few late-night spots in Chinatown (Shiao Lan Kung at 9th and Race, Nan Zhou Noodle House at 10th and Race), diners on and off Broad Street (Melrose, Penrose, Oregon

and duh Broad Street Diner) and South Philly’s Cheesesteak Vegas, but the one food thing that this great food city lacks is dining after midnight options. And no, Wawa is not one of them. “One thing I really wish I could change about the Philly restaurant scene is adding more late-night restaurants,” said Michael Solomonov during a recent interview with PhillyMag.com. “It’s really not the restaurants, though, as much as it is the customers. Philly is just an early city. It just is.” This might be true. As a minor, single example, the once-and-former Palladi-

no’s Italian steakhouse spot at the boldest corner of East Passyunk Avenue tried a late night fine fare menu of nibbles and wine at the height of the restaurant’s popularity, and got nowhere. Nina’s Trattoria, a contemporary Sicilian bistro in the heart of the lower half of the Italian Market, was serving a post-2 a.m. menu for a minute, but seemed to have ceased the operation. Now, another Italian Market/Ninth Street operation – this time on the southern half of the Market, below Washington and nearer Pat’s and Geno’s – is trying to give late nights a major go, and with mega-successful results: a several address strip of Mexican restaurants (and additional open space for spillover crowds) led by the longtime area favorite, Taqueria La Prima/Prima Pizza. Now, open pretty much every night until 4 a.m., this traditional Mexican culinary hot spot – on a long block where amazing Mexican food is de rigeur, be it small homey restaurants or moveable burrito mobiles – not only benefits from the late-night crew of bands, comedians, open mic-ers and audiences who hang and drink at the neighboring Connie’s Ric Rac just doors away or even the immediate neighborhood’s young Mexican apartment dwellers, biking by for a quick, handsome full plate of grilled onions, cactus, and meaty, brimming-over tacos. In the cold of the last months, the tall wide windows of Taqueria La Prima would fog from the crowds stuffed in long lines inside the restaurant. Now, with warmer weather and summer approaching, more than a few Mexican kids in Phillies caps can be found at 3 a.m. hanging around outside this taqueria eating burritos and laughing loudly. Then again, maybe they’re just joyously enjoying their meal. On any given evening, Mexican and Latino crowds, speaking Spanish, dressed stylishly to the nines and driving flashy cars habit Taqueria La Prima/Prima Pizza for their wide ranging menu featuring Barbacoa de Chiva (shredded lamb), Cuerititos de Puerco (pork skins) and Chorizo sausage tortillas while watching rerun futbol matches on the colorful taqueria’s widescreen televisions. The Secret Admirer, the free paper of record for the ‘sad weirdos’ of Philly, turns 5 this year

ipping tall cranberry-and-vodkas in a Kensington bar on Sunday night, 34-year-old David Commins flips through the latest edition of his self-published print baby, The Secret Admirer, and wonders aloud whether he’ll commemorate its upcoming 200th issue in Philly. “It all depends on what I’m feeling that week,” he says. Commins is a bulky guy with dyed golden hair. He’s wearing heeled leather boots and a tank top that says “I am strong because a strong woman raised me.” Inked in chicken-scratch handwriting on his left bicep is part of the Assassin’s credo, “everything is permitted” — a near-religious mantra for counter cultur12 JUNE 7 - 14, 2017

ists of various stripes. You may have seen the cornflower blue stacks of The Secret Admirer in your neighborhood bar or coffeeshop. The free weekly contains an offbeat crossword puzzle, made by Commins each week on a Lazy Susan in his barebones Port Richmond rowhouse. Then there are zany horoscopes, random trivia, hand-drawn comic strips from local artists, and a popular segment called “Overheard in Philly,” in which readers text Commins’ personal cell phone with outof-context snippets like this one of city life: “There’s too many vaginas on the internet, dude. Too many,” drunk dude says to his drunk friend at the Bar(n) in West Philly. “Nah, man,” drunk friend says. “There’s not enough.”

One minute Commins is saying all the Admirer’s content is “silly, frivolous shit” and the next minute a random reader texts him to thank him and say how much the Admirer helps the week go by a little easier. The lonely, bored and dissatisfied are Commins’ primary demographic — many of whom pick up the Admirer for the cover stories. The personal essays, creative nonfiction pieces, flash fiction, and sometimes even raw scraps from Commins’ journals. While he has had contributors over the years, most of the content is penned by Commins under various pseudonyms like Lyrra Fox, Emily Centipede, Leon Wolffe and David Otter, each of which has its own unique mood. While he says the paper would be nowhere without the crossword puzzle,

Commins says the more personal the writing gets, the more visceral the response. In one “particularly devastating” issue, he wrote about the death of a close friend and readers reached out to him en masse to engage about the piece. Those words make a writer’s world spin. But that kind of support is also what helps Commins pay his bills. He’s the publication’s primary content producer, editor, publisher, marketer, deliveryman and salesman. There are a dozen ads in the Admirer each week, all of which came to him. Not once has he had to go out on a sales call. “I end up making a special relationship with sad weirdos — and sad weirdos are super loyal,” Commins says. “They talk it up. They do a lot of the work for me.” The Admirer is the only thing keeping him rooted in Philly, he says. But for Commins — the hitchhiking gutter punk Commins, the live-in-the-NewHampshire-woods Commins, the dropout-of-college-and-just-do-it-your-way Commins — a good thing isn’t always enough. But how far can a self-described “wiggly tooth, skinned knee” publication go in Philly? When he started The Admirer in Athens, Georgia, in 2010, he produced about 130 copies before coming up north. Some of those readers still reach out to him and ask him to send copies via snail mail. Now entering in its fifth year in the City of Brotherly Love, Commins says he knows himself well enough to know he has to do something different. Some ideas: franchising the publication to other cities or adding more pages to the existing addition. (He says half a dozen advertisers are on the waitlist because he doesn’t have enough pages of content for them.) One idea just completely off the table: expanding to the web. “There’s nothing I’m doing that you can’t find someone doing it better on the internet,” he says. But again, it depends on what kind of week he’s having. Commins rolls up an uneaten pizza crust in the copy of his paper. It wouldn’t be surprising if he were throwing it all away or taking the scraps home to NoFace, his beloved cat. This paper, he says, is sometimes the only reason he gets up in the morning. “Sometimes it carries me and sometimes I carry it,” he says. ■ TWITTER: @MAXMMARIN

On trial for alleged health clinic scandal, Renee Tartaglione profited from prison industry contracts

lready facing federal charges over an alleged money-laundering scheme at a North Philadelphia mental health clinic, Renee Tartaglione, the scion of a Philadelphia political dynasty, may soon be answering questions about how she also profited off state and federal contracts related to the prison industry. Prosecutors allege, in addition to bilking the government out of hundreds of thousands of dollars through Medicaid fraud, Tartaglione used a shell company to purchase two buildings and then rented the buildings back at exorbitant rates to the Juniata Community Mental Health Clinic, where she served as board president. In court last Wednesday, attorneys pruned through Tartaglione’s tangled self-dealing arrangement at the clinic. But Philadelphia Weekly that Tartaglione maintained a similar stewardship over a publicly funded halfway house for a decade while she worked as a high-ranking city employee — even during her husband’s stint in federal prison for bribing a 14 JUNE 7 - 14, 2017

trio of Atlantic City councilmen. Although the ongoing trial is focused on the clinic, filings show prosecutors are also seeking records related to the Kintock Group, a large transitional housing provider in Philadelphia and New Jersey, and its connections to Renee Tartaglione and her associates – relationships that span from the Jersey shore to Harrisburg. Renee is the sister of state Sen. Christine Tartaglione, daughter of former City Commissioner Marge Tartaglione, and wife of North Philly ward leader Carlos Matos. The Kintock story begins in 2001, a year before Tartaglione and Matos helped found the Juniata clinic. That year, the Fort Washington-based transitional facility operator was looking for a site for a new 333-resident re-entry facility. Real estate records show Tartaglione and Matos, through their LLC, Par Economic Development Corp., purchased a one-story, 50,000-square-foot building for $975,000 in the city’s Juniata Park neighborhood, at which point they promptly entered into a 10-year lease with Kintock. Despite community concerns and zon-

ing gridlock, Kintock eventually opened the building, with the aid of state and federal funding, to work with nonviolent offenders transitioning out of lockup. The facility’s politically connected landlords, meanwhile, remained under the radar. The correctional facility’s lease shows that Kintock paid Par Economic Development upward of $25,000 a month in rent, with a stipulation that Kintock would have to buy the building after 10 years or vacate the premises. On cue, the LLC sold the building to Kintock for $1.5 million in 2011, real estate records show. The business arrangement was known by few outside of North Philadelphia. But its structure resembles that of the one with the mental health clinic, where prosecutors allege Tartaglione used another shell company, called Norris Hancock LLC, to buy and lease a new medical building to the Juniata Community Mental Health Clinic for upward of $25,000 a month. The clinic relocated to this new facility from its previous home on Third Street – a smaller building also rented to the nonprofit through Norris Hancock LLC, which later turned into the political headquarters for the family-controlled 19th Ward. William DeStefano, a defense attorney representing Tartaglione at trial, did not return requests for comment by press time. Neither did Kintock officials. The Kintock building was not Par’s first big real estate transaction. In 1995, Matos used it to acquire the burned-down Quaker Lace Co. factory near Fourth Street and Lehigh Avenue, just months before the School District of Philadelphia sought to purchase it to build the Julia De Burgos Elementary School. At the time, news reports and critics accused Matos, who was then working as an aide in Christine Tartaglione’s senatorial office, of gaming the district for profit. Matos said the criticism came from his political enemies, according to news reports. Matos, a veteran political organizer in North Philadelphia’s barrio, purchased the two-acre parcel for $66,923. Months later, the school district paid him $1 million for it, minus the city liens for demolishing the charred factory. Matos, while named as a co-conspirator in his wife’s trial, has not been charged. In addition to information about Kintock, legal filings indicate that prosecutors are interested in expense records related to Par Economic Development Corp., as well as Tartaglione’s New Jersey beach home,

her purchase of a boat and other financial dealings. It remains unclear whether these records are relevant to the allegations surrounding the health clinic. Tartaglione’s financial ties to the publicly funded agencies should have raised ethical red flags years ago. After all, she was working as deputy city commissioner under her mother while simultaneously stewarding the Juniata clinic and the Kintock halfway house. Public employees in Philadelphia are barred from profiting either directly or indirectly from public contracts with the city. The Philadelphia Board of Ethics recently fined former prison commissioner Louis Giorla after it emerged he had profited off of a city medical contract with Corizon Health. However, direct or indirect benefit from state and federal contracts are not explicitly barred by the city charter. But it wouldn’t have mattered much in Tartaglione’s case. She resigned in 2010 after coming under fire for a separate city charter violation: operating her then-incarcerated husband’s political ward during office hours. Tartaglione’s involvement at the clinic, which had a city contract since 2005, continued until the federal indictment was brought against her last year. A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s office said prosecutors will not comment during trial, and declined to elaborate on their evidence related to Tartaglione’s case. The trial, now in its third week, is deeply underpinned by the family’s storied political life, with ailing political dynasties now pitted against one another in a blame game. In the one corner, the Tartaglione crest. In the other, the descendant of Ralph Acosta, who was one of the first Latino state representatives in the Pennsylvania legislature. While the crux of the federal prosecutor’s argument is that Tartaglione embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars through fraudulent checks at the clinic, DeStefano charges that Tartaglione wasn’t the one taking kickbacks. He says the checks were fraudulently cashed by former state Rep. Leslie Acosta, who worked at the clinic prior to taking office, alongside her mother, Sandy Acosta, who served as the clinic’s longtime bookkeeper. Odunde Festival Another year means the anticipated return of the Odunde Festival, the largest African-American street festival on the East Coast. More than 100 displays of art, music, food and various other vendors will close 12 city blocks along South Street in celebration of both African and Caribbean culture. The day-long fair is the culmination of what is actually a week of Odunde events. From African Family Day (June 7) to an African Business Roundtable (June 9) to free yoga in the park (June 10) there are a ton of events to attend in addition to Sunday’s main display. Taste food from a variety of different food trucks and listen to live music and other acts on two stages set up on South Street and Grays Ferry Avenue. This will mark the 42nd year of the landmark festival that is estimated to attract close to 500,000 people. According to the Odunde website, this festival is widely known throughout the world as the preeminent model for festivals celebrating African-American and Caribbean cultures in large part due to the hosting of prominent leaders, artists and performers in that community. Trump gives HUD Mid-Atlantic role to Philly GOP lead DeFelice President Donald J. Trump last week appointed veteran neighborhood activist and political leader Joe DeFelice as administrator of the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Mid-Atlantic Region. DeFelice will be responsible for the oversight and delivery of HUD programs and services throughout Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia. He will serve as HUD's liaison to elected officials, congressional delegations, city managers, stakeholders and customers. “My passion for community development started in my own neighborhood, working alongside developers, local leaders and nonprofits to bring about positive change," he said. "Having worked as a community leader, I certainly have an appreciation for the tough challenges facing communities 20 JUNE 7 - 14, 2017

across the region." DeFelice, 39, attended St. Matthew Elementary School, Father Judge High School, La Salle University and Widener School of Law. Politically, he worked for former state Rep. In the community, he’s been a Mummer, president of the Mayfair Civic Association, chairman of the Mayfair Community Development Corporation, director for the Mayfair Fallen Heroes Run and board member of the Friends of the Free Library of Philadelphia. He lives in Winchester Park with his wife, Rose, and two sons, Joey and Christian. His appointment with HUD came last Friday. “I look forward to advancing HUD's mission across the MidAtlantic Region by helping underserved neighborhoods become thriving communities, expanding homeownership opportunities for credit-worthy citizens and helping eradicate homelessness – especially for our veterans,” said DeFelice. ■

Successful jeweler Steven Singer understands what it takes for retail companies to thrive or just stay alive in the everchanging marketplace. “You adapt or die,” he said. Singer, who grew up in Castor Gardens and Rhawnhurst, gave his take on the current and future landscape of retail as a panelist at the recent Women in Business Conference sponsored by the Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. The issue is always on his mind as both a retailer and a member of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce’s small business board. He’s a former Chamber board member and chairman of the small business board. Singer never thought he’d be the owner of such a successful jewelry business while growing up in the Northeast. He lived near Castor and Hellerman as a youngster before moving to the 2000 block of Napfle St. He attended Rhawnhurst Elementary School, Wilson Middle School and Northeast High School, where classmates included Chickie’s & Pete’s owner Pete Ciarrocchi and Philadelphia University provost and executive dean Matt Baker. A year ago, he shared his thoughts on the subject as the commencement speaker at Philadelphia University. And recently, he was named president of the international Leading Jewelers Guild. The Guild’s membership is mostly American, and will give Singer a chance to talk about what he calls the “over-retailing of the United States.” As some venerable department stores struggle to survive, Singer sees other struggles ahead. He predicts, in the next three to five years, 30 percent to 40 percent of malls will “disappear.” Juggernaut malls like King of Prussia and California’s Fashion Island will continue to thrive, he said, but many others will see anchor stores leave, followed by smaller retailers. “I think you’ll see a contraction. The world is so different now. There’s not enough foot traffic. Young people are enamored with their phones,” he said. Singer believes in the omnichannel approach to retail success and subscribes to the acronym SWM – Start With Mobile. “We embraced that seven or eight years ago. The customer should be able to do anything seamlessly on any device,” he said. “If you have not embraced that technology, you’re behind the curve.” As examples, he cited Wawa’s use of touchscreen ordering and Dominos Pizza’s online ordering options.
