recent Philadelphia Magazine report shed light on a sign outside the Old Philadelphia Bar in Kensington, where the sign on the door of the establishment reads, “IF YOU’RE NOT PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN, DON’T EVEN BOTHER TO COME IN.â€? The headline had to have tugged on the heartstrings of leftists who hate Donald Trump: “We Think We Just Found Donald Trump’s Dream Bar in Philadelphia.â€? But honestly even as a bit of leftist myself, I don’t see the problem with this. And here’s why. I know what Old Philly is and I’ll be frank, it’s not a place for people who look like me. It’s an established neighborhood dive bar, in an established but rapidly gentrifying part of Kensington, that has always been predominantly working class, white America. And if you think that sign is the worst thing to ever been said, or plastered on walls inside that bar, then we’re all kidding ourselves. But here’s the thing. I actually admire the management for standing up for its socalled American pride. The kind of pride that doesn’t allow for inclusion, diversity or the type of pride that anyone with a sense of dignity could get down with. A bartender at Old Philly even told the reporter that it’s all good because “[they] love everybody here ‌ besides, a Spanish guy put it up for us.â€? Anyone who knows the Old Philly knows the clientele it serves. It’s not for “yuppiesâ€? or “hipstersâ€? as the story eloquently described, but for the true OG’s of that neighborhood. It’s a great place to go in and cop a six pack, but if you’re a minority you’re not sticking around to talk politics. Especially considering a patron in the bar told the reporter that he wished someone would pay him to build Trump’s Mexican border wall and that “if you weren’t born here, then you need to go back to where you came from.â€? You can say you love everybody, but walk

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

into that bar and sidle up to the bar speaking Spanish loudly and watch all the looks you get – especially from the guy who would happily build a wall to keep you out. Those are the type of patrons bars like the Old Philly and bars all over the city like it serve. You know those bars, you know you know those bars. They’re the ones you’d never step foot inside, even though it’s just feet from your home. We live in an America emboldened by a President who threatens minorities, disrespects women and is actively dismantling agreements with our own allies. America’s thoughts on how we feel when it comes to race, sexual orientation, or even our own understanding of either has left dinner table and backyard patio conversation among friends and has been empowered by a press corps that needs it for captivating headlines and by the daily dumbing down of our society which is our collective obsession with social media. Old Philadelphia Bar hasn’t done anything wrong, it’s just passively aggressively shown its true colors to an ever-changing neighborhood. There’s one thing to be proud to be an American, I think most of us as citizens are, but personally am I proud of America at this point in time? Hell, no. Just like the sign the late Joey Vento hosted outside Geno’s imploring all of his customers to “speak Englishâ€? before ordering a cheesesteak this sign strikes a chord, but it’s nothing to get bent out of shape over. It’s just a classic reminder of the establishments you don’t need to frequent. I always thought Steve’s in the Northeast made better cheesesteak anyway and there plenty of other dive bars to saddle up in my neighborhood to get a beer. But it’s not that. It’s the fact that people are using pride to mask underlying currents of racism so openly these days. The same way I was once told by an acquaintance that his Confederate ag represents “Southern Pride.â€? Considering he’s from a Philadelphia suburb, I took it as sheer bullshit and realized that in that moment I felt offended by his sheer patronizing of my intelligence. That’s exactly what Old Philly’s sign is, a patronizing of intelligence. But people in the ever-changing neighborhood in which it resides are too smart for that, hence the bar’s listing on the real estate market. So here’s to you, Old Philly. For serving us all proof that one can post closet racism right on their front door. Q TWITTER: @SPRTSWTR

What next for the Kensington homeless camps?

OVERHEARD

As you’ve probably heard by now, city officials and police closed two of the four prominent homeless camps in Kensington last week, the first part of a pilot program aimed at transitioning the area’s destitute and addicted into housing and treatment. Advocates protested the evictions, arguing the city does not have adequate housing options prepared to absorb the population. It was less than a year ago that Mayor Jim Kenney and Conrail officials closed part of a railroad tracks where many users slept – a decision attributed to the inflation of the bridge camp populations. It’s a question that few have the courage to ask outside of the nosebleeds, slamming overpriced Bud Lights among close friends. It’s been easy for city government to solve budget woes by simply raising taxes, but believe it or not, one city council person is suggesting the city take a hard look at itself. Councilwoman Cindy Bass, yes the same one who pushed for a bill to force stop and go shop owners to remove their bulletproof glass in the hood, is now suggesting that if the city truly wants to help its struggling school system, then starting making budget cuts to existing programs. According to a June 1 Philly. com report, Bass has her eyes on an $80 million budget reduction for the city’s prison system, in addition to an eventual $150 million dwindling across many other sectors of city government. Council has until June 30 to submit its recommendations to Mayor Jim Kenney. When asked her reasoning, Bass replied: “People are feeling the pinch, [so] we are requesting that instead of looking outward at everybody else’s pocketbook, we look inwards at our own pocketbook.â€? Jihid Mayes is only 19. “By [my] second day there, guys were already starting to test [me], they want to see what you’re about,â€? Mayes recalled in a conversation with PW. “It’s not just the other kids in there with you, but the guards too, they want to see if you’re soft and if you are, then they’ll mess with you. I was there for three and a half months and it was the hardest thing I had to do. On my last day there, someone tried to ďŹ ght me, literally the last day. They’ll try anything to get you to stay. They want you to be miserable, they want to lose hope. And [if you aren’t strong] it’s easy to get trapped and fall in the hole.â€? Mayes, wouldn’t get into the speciďŹ cs, but when it came to his story he recalled a wrong place, wrong time kind of a tale, in which his unwillingness to “snitchâ€? on people he knew landed him inside a juvenile placement center at 17. His story was one of many during a daylong series of testimony and afďŹ rmations and pleas to Philadelphia City Council during a hearing inside Council’s chambers in May. Youth and adults of all ages shared recollections of horriďŹ c conditions while members of the Department of Human Services, the School District of Philadelphia and other notables within the child welfare scene listened. The goal was to shed light and implore Council to keep a closer eye on the current modus operandi when it comes to a cycle of Philadelphia’s youth being ripped from families and familiarity and thrust into privatized placement facilities – many with abhorrent conditions. It’s a cycle where many of these organizations turn a blind eye to the conditions these kids face in facilities that are designed to rehabilitate, but in many ways act as a precursor to the prison system. “It’s really hard for young people to talk about what happened to them in these facilities,â€? said Kate Burdick, an attorney at the Juvenile Law Center a Center City-based organization that works to turn those in the system into advocates by mentoring other youth and ďŹ guring out solutions to what many inside feel is an ineffective way to deal with the issue. “Especially if they’re still under court supervision, there’s a chance they might end up back there and if they’re out telling their story it could have repercussions if they were ever sent back there. On top of that, you have a situation where it’s just really hard to discuss horrible memories in general. They also don’t see much in talking about what happened to them because in so many cases they feel like they’re not believed.â€? But it is happening.

Common misconceptions

For those unfamiliar with the way the system works, it’s easy to readily surmise that many of the youth assigned to these homes

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

FEATURE are committing violent acts, drug offenders or are a general menace. But for every instance like those, there’s also a child being sent away for repeat truancy or having unďŹ t parents. It’s then DHS’ role, upon recommendation from the school system, child and family services – or in some cases statewide child welfare organizations to locate and send youth to juvenile placement centers, which on the outside are supposed to focus on rehabilitation. Instead, youth claim that in addition to improper treatment from counselors and staff, in some facilities they are subjected to squalor-like conditions, bunks teeming with bedbugs, rotten food and more. Subjected to the worst. Simply for being a habitual school skipper. The city laid claim to only one privatized youth placement center, the Ford Road location of Wordsworth Academy in West Philadelphia. The location was shut down by the state in 2017, following the death of 17-yearold David Hess, who died by suffocation after a confrontation with staff. Hess’ death became the icing on a layered cake of alleged abuse – both physical and sexual – inside the facility. DHS owns and operates the next closest entity, the Philadelphia Juvenile and Justice Services Center but the PJJSC is branded as a secure detention facility – and is essentially a long-term holding cell complete with an education program that offers transferable credits until a court decides the fate of youth aged 13-20 who pass through. For the most part, however, Philadelphia’s troubled youth are sent to private facilities out of the city – and some even out of the state – facilities that receive private funding from both city and state organizations, primarily funded by taxpayer dollars. SpeciďŹ c costs per child were not supplied to PW at the time of this report, but in a 2017 Philly.com feature in the aftermath of Hess’ death, it was reported that Wordsworth, which shared a similar model to many current in-state and out-of-state facilities, received $119,000 per child. According to numbers provided by the Juvenile Law Center, there are roughly 900 youths from Philadelphia currently in some form of placement. Of that, 516 boys and 55 girls are directly placed in residential placement facilities. Girls like Beatriz JimĂŠnez.

“It’d be better if I was just dead

Pausing before she spoke, Beatriz Jimenez, 16, took a ďŹ rm look at the panel of city Councilmembers before she spoke. She wanted to make sure they heard her clearly. She wanted them to know that if it wasn’t for her own strong will – and in no way shape or form through any help from city human services – she might have taken her own life. “There were plenty of times I just wanted to give up, where I thought it’d be better if I was just dead,â€? Jimenez told PW. “I just felt like I was worthless and that there was no one

JimĂŠnez was just 13 when she got her ďŹ rst taste of the system, being shipped to two different placement facilities in Philadelphia over a period of just seven months. Her ďŹ rst was a residential facility in the city, Jimenez described as a more of “a prisonâ€? than a place

of rehabilitation or care. She recalled the night she refused to head into a common area of the facility wanting to just stay in her room and that’s when it got scary. “This woman comes in, picks me up off the bed and just bodyslams me, for no reason,â€? she recalled. “This was all because I didn’t want to be in a room with the other girls. “I felt like an animal in a zoo, like I was a monster and that I should’ve never been subjected to stuff like that.â€? In her testimony to Council, Jimenez recalled male staff inappropriately restraining girls, staff letting girls ďŹ ght in undisclosed locations away from cameras, ďŹ ghting some of the girls and food that consisted of stale breads and uncooked, rancid meats. “There were times where the food was so nasty, I would just go hungry,â€? said Jimenez. There were a few times I found worms in my food and I’d tell [the staff] and they’d be like ‘don’t eat it then.’ Not even offer me something else or apologize. Most of us have never experienced food with worms on it. But I did and I’ll never forget that.â€? If there is a positive to come from her experience, Jimenez boasts that at barely a teenager, she found inner strength she never knew she had. The experience was one that now, as

a 16-year-old high school sophomore, has her working as an advocate for change – change she hopes will start with City Council holding those tasked with assigning youth into placement facilities doing a better job of knowing where kids are ending up. She has goals getting a criminal justice degree, moving on to study law and working as an advocate for foster youth. When asked what implored her to get up and tell her story in a room full of those who needed to hear it, Jimenez said her story wasn’t for her, it’s for those like her going through it, right now. “I came to let [Council] know that there is stuff going on in these delinquent centers that they could only imagine, Jimenez said. “They need to know what we go through after they ship us off and forget about us. I also wanted to talk for the youth that are currently in placement centers and child welfare centers going through this right now. We’re here for you and we are your voice because we know what it’s like. It takes a long time to get over it, to get over being sad. Some of us have gotten there, some of us are still working on it, but we’re all trying to get there. Q TWITTER: @SPRTSWTR

At the Young Heroes Outreach Program event last weekend, students from schools across the city presented on issues that hit closest to home.

o many guns, so little time. That was one of the “obstaclesâ€? a class of ďŹ fthgrade students at Tanner Duckrey School identiďŹ ed in their research project on gun violence. Over the course of several months, they interviewed fellow students, researched teens who lost their lives to bullets, and told stories of their own traumatic encounters with ďŹ rearms. Then they encountered another “obstacle:â€? Dealing with our own gun scare while we were working on the project. On Thursday, May 31, the day before National Gun Violence Awareness Day, two days before the class would present their ďŹ ndings at the National Liberty Museum’s Young Heroes Outreach Program, a mother

of an eighth-grade Tanner Duckrey student phoned in to inform school ofďŹ cials that her gun had gone missing. It was shortly before 10 a.m. Teacher Sara Watts and her ďŹ fth graders were busy working on the their project when the lockdown went into effect. “As soon as we heard the lockdown drill, we had to stop everything we were doing and get into the closet for safety,â€? recalled ďŹ fth grader Kyashia Oliver. Huddled together in the darkened classroom, they heard a knock on the door. “Police,â€? a voice said. Per lockdown protocol, they remained silent and did not open the door. Eventually, school ofďŹ cials allowed police ofďŹ cers into the classroom, where they performed a K- 9 sweep and searched each student and their bags for the missing weapon. “It was scary,â€? Oliver said. “My classmates were thinking that they were going to hurt us, but they were

just doing their job making sure that the weapon was removed from the school.â€? The school-wide search took about two hours. Philadelphia police discovered a BB gun in one student’s bag, but it turned out to be unrelated to the original lockdown call, ofďŹ cials said. No real ďŹ rearms were recovered. OfďŹ cers took three students into custody before the lockdown was lifted. Finally, Watts’ ďŹ fth-grade class could get back to learning about gun violence. Amid a pitched national conversation about putting guns in teachers’ hands, Philadelphia’s schools regularly contend with keeping them out of the classroom. Just a week prior to the Duckrey incident, Philadelphia police removed a teacher at Russell Byers Charter School in Center City after a student reported seeing a handgun in the teacher’s bag. In February, Fels High School in Summerdale went into a lockdown after a ninth grader brought in a loaded handgun. In December, it was a seventh grader with yet another loaded pistol at Gen. George A. McCall Elementary School in the tony neighborhood of Society Hill. All of these incidents thankfully ended without injury – but parents and teachers are left to contend with quiet, unseeable scars of trauma among a student population that has already been exposed to far more gun violence than the average American student. “After we knew the building was completely clear, we started off with a process of sharing our emotions and what that experience felt like,â€? said Watts. “It’s a really scary and horrible feeling to have to talk to your students about being in a lockdown.â€? The following day, June 1, was National Gun Violence Awareness Day. The School District and Temple University came and conducted trauma training for all of the teachers at Tanner Duckrey. And that weekend, Watts’ students found a chance to share their own stories. The Young Heroes Outreach Program is a yearlong initiative of the National Liberty Museum. It invites fourth to eighth graders to delve into a civic or social justice issue that hits close to home – with an emphasis on letting students choose the topic themselves, says Kevin Orangers, the museum’s vice president

of programs and operations. Of the 16 Philadelphia schools that participated, Sara Watts’ ďŹ fthgrade class at Tanner Duckrey was one of four that elected to focus on guns, school shootings or school violence. Students presented their projects to a audience of parents, teachers and friends in the buzzing armory at Girard College on June 2. At Tanner Duckrey’s table, ďŹ fth grader Shaniyah Daniels-Bush walked attendees through rows of pie charts detailing their survey of students in each grade at Tanner Duckrey: 60 percent of ďŹ rst graders surveyed said they knew someone who had been shot or killed by a gun. For ďŹ fth graders like Daniels-Bush, that ďŹ gure jumped to 87 percent. A handbound book sat in front of the poster board display. Inside the book the students had written ďŹ rsthand accounts that read like dispatches from the front lines of some distant war. My uncle gets hit by a gun gets hurt He was in the hospital he is not alive and DAD was not hurt he is alive My stepdad’s son died by gun violence. Now my stepdad misses his kid. Then my Popop died of gun violence. Finally, my sister’s friend died from gun violence. The ďŹ rst time I saw or knew someone got shot or harmed it was in West Philly or North Philly when my dad got shot 2 or 3 times in the chest it was 12:00 a.m and at 9:45 a.m. my aunt beth had to wake me and my step brother and my sis and gave us the bad news Sharing such stories was voluntary, Watts said, and students who did not wish to share personal anecdotes had the option of researching other victims of gun violence. “One student came back upstairs after interviewing a ďŹ rst grader and said ‘Mrs. Watts, the ďŹ rst grader started crying while she was telling her story,’â€? Watts recalled. Despite the difďŹ cult subject matter, students took pride in their work. Asked about the most interesting part of the project, Kyashia Oliver pointed to picture on their project board. It’s a meter of heroism. Students had shaded in bars to show their progress from “herolingâ€? on the low end to “epic heroâ€? up high. “We’re right here, as mighty heroes,â€? Oliver said, smiling. Q TWITTER: @MAXMMARIN

Bully brawl

The couple behind a Philly pit bull rescue team faces a $1.5 million lawsuit from the New York rescue group that helped them get off the ground. BY MAX MARIN

L

ast month, Philadelphia police shot a 6-month-old pit bull who had reportedly attacked a woman in her Frankford home. Witnesses later told Philly Weekly there were two dogs on the scene, and the wounded puppy, Lily, was not the aggressor. But it was too late. Lily, knocking on death’s door, likely wouldn’t have survived without Marvin and Jessica Graaf, local restaurant owners with a passion for imperiled pit bulls. The Mount Airy couple runs a edgling animal rescue called Philly Bully Team. They picked up Lily from a North Philadelphia animal shelter and zoomed her to the University of Pennsylvania animal hospital. An $8,000 vet bill, an amputated leg and weeks of recovery later, Lily is on her way to a new home. But pricey medical bills are now the least of the Graafs’ woes. On May 23, New York Bully Crew lodged a defamation suit against the Graafs, alleging the couple defrauded and slandered the nonproďŹ t after it helped them get their rescue operation off the ground late last year. The price tag for damages – a staggering $1.5 million – has raised alarm among supporters of the Philadelphia couple’s rescue efforts on social media. But Craig Fields, founder of New York Bully Crew, says he’s not after the money. “This lawsuit is not about shutting them

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

down – it’s about shutting them up,â€? Fields said in a phone interview last week. “We’re not looking for a dollar from them. We’re looking for them to stop slandering us on a page cultivated by our followers.â€? New York Bully Crew is an 8-year-old animal rescue and adoption center based in the Empire State. To hear hear the Graafs tell it, the established nonproďŹ t offered its ďŹ nancial support and robust social media following to help the Graafs launch Philly Bully Crew. But the Graafs were never employees of New York Bully Crew, they say – and that soon became a source of tension between parties. “We’d set up a fundraiser for Philly Bully Crew and they’d start saying stuff like ‘you’re not allowed to set up fundraisers without our permission,’â€? Marvin Graaf said. In the suit, Fields maintains he had express ownership over the Philly operation. When the Graafs attempted to go separate ways after relations turned sour between parties, the New York Bully Crew demanded the passwords to the Philly Bully Crew’s social media accounts, claiming the accounts and their followers were NYBC’s property. To further cut ties, the Graafs changed their operation’s name to “Philly Bully Teamâ€? and made a public announcement they were no longer afďŹ liated with NYBC. (The lawsuit claims that name, too, is NYBC’s intellectual property.) The Graafs acted with “subterfugeâ€? and “unclean handsâ€? to “defraudâ€? the company of its property, according to the complaint ďŹ led in Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas last week. The suit says the Graafs made “disparagingâ€? posts about their former partners on social media – one of which said the New York Bully Crew “abused a dogâ€? and has been “banned from offering dog operations and rescue operations in various geographic locations.â€? The Graafs say they were speaking from personal experience, and have evidence to back up their claims. According to the complaint, the allegations have resulted in “vast damages,â€? hurting the New York operation’s ability to fundraise. On the phone, Fields called the Graafs disgruntled employees who demanded higher salaries. Earlier this year, New York Bully Crew started sending the Philly couple $250 a week via PayPal to cover expenses, Marvin Graaf acknowledged. In addition to rescuing and rehoming pit bulls on their own, New York Bully Crew would regularly request the Graafs’ assistance transporting rescues in New Jersey and rural Pennsylvania. Graaf said he considered the payments support donations from one group to another – never a form of payment, let alone an employee’s compensation. Both parties have retained legal counsel, but agreed to speak to a reporter on the record rather than through their respective attorneys.

CULTURE terial you’re talking about. It’s important for me to be honest in my work. Emma: Yes. I would say it affects everything just because it’s intermixed with who I am – it makes me more empathetic and open to looking at things from multiple vantage points. I know it also prompted me looking at stuff from a more sociological perspective race, class, gender, [how] all these things intermixed affects my world view and if I were just straight and white I've no idea what I’d be like – maybe a monster! I’ve found comedians in generally to be extremely open and nonjudgmental people. With audiences ‌ it’s a big effect. Sometimes they will be excited just because I visually don’t look like the norm and they will be charged about that in a good way, sometimes there is a tension and I have to do lots of footwork to build the bridge of shared experience and then sometimes it seems like they aren't noticing and it’s just “get to your stuff.â€? Which is ideal.

What's it like to talk about your real-life relationships so publicly? How do your partners and crushes feel? How has doing this show affected how you approach dating and sex?

omedian Emma Willmann may be setting out to make people laugh, but she’s also dropping delicious nuggets of wisdom along the way. For example: “Figure out what your nonnegotiables are – the things that you are exible on and then what are the things you can’t compromise. For me it’s trust – I have to trust where the person is coming from.â€? Along with friend and fellow queer comic Matteo Lane, Willmann has been dispensing dating advice, chatting about crushes and generally oversharing on their podcast, “Inside the Closet.â€? Brought together, according to Matteo, by a “love of conversationâ€? and “nat-

Talking it out

Catching up with Inside the Closet comic duo Emma Willmann and Matteo Lane ural chemistry with each other, the podcast has been building some serious momentum. Nearly 40 episodes in, the pair has covered everything from long distance love and identifying what you want in a partner to “retreating to the woods to become fully lesbian. In advance of their June 2 live recording at Chinatown’s Good Good Comedy Theater, the two discussed their dynamic, being openly queer on stage and their wildly divergent takes on OkCupid with PW.

What is the idea that drives your show? Emma: Two friends having a totally no-

holds-barred conversation about life and work – which includes our candid experiences as gay people working in mainstream environments. The vibe is very what would two people, who are gay too, say if no one else was around? We’re bringing you inside our friend closet.

Have you both been out the whole time you have been doing comedy? How do you think it affects your experience – either with audiences or fellow comedians? Matteo: I have been out from the beginning. I think it helps set the tone for the type of ma-

Matteo: I tell the person I’m seeing what I do and stay honest with them. I think it is hard, but a good way to approach it is by asking for their approval ďŹ rst. Emma: Well, it has been great therapeutically. Until I realized oversharing about a romantic relationship just isn’t fair to the other person who doesn’t have a platform. So I’m changing that from here on out: I’m keeping any romance stuff closer to the vest! I’ve had girls get it and like it – they see it as a performance and part of a show, then I’ve had people not like it. I respect both and am erring on the side of keeping love stuff more private. Matteo gives great advice. Over the course of the show I’ve ďŹ gured out more what I want.

What is the best dating advice you have culled from this experience so far? Are we still against OKCupid? Matteo: Be honest and I will always hate OkCupid. Emma: I like OkCupid! I dated someone for a few months I met on OkCupid and even called her “OKCupid! Wonder why that didn’t work out?

How do you pick guests for the show? Matteo: Usually just our friends who we think are interesting. Usually from a queer perspective or an ally.

What can people expect if we are or aren't already familiar with the podcast? Emma: Fun! Laughs! Personal insights and generally hilarious Q&A. Q

Although he made quite the appearance at the Roots Festival this past weekend, it’s been the M.O. of Philly rapper Lil Uzi Vert to pull no shows like his latest in Quebec.

Coming off appearance at Roots Picnic, outrage following Lil Uzi Vert’s cancelled show in Canada was minor claim festival organizers

Shooting blanks BY GREGORY DALE

I

n the wake of several videos being circulated on social media of fans storming the stage at the Santa Teresa Festival in SainteTherese, Quebec, following the announcement of Lil Uzi Vert’s cancelled performance, the event’s organizers are asserting the chaos was not as bad as many perceived it to be. As one of the headliners at the Roots Picnic

over the weekend, his performance at Festival Pier was a far removal from an event that spiraled into chaos up North after the North Philly rapper decided not to take the stage, leaving a packed crowd all ďŹ red up. Videos posted on Twitter and Instagram show a number of attendees at the Canadian event storming the stage and throwing speakers and monitors following an announcement that the rapper was going to be a no-show.

The incident was heavily reported on by numerous media outlets in Canada and the U.S. and some called it a riot. The rapper also took to Instagram Live in a video of his own explaining his reasoning for not making the show, citing an inability to get acceptance into Canada and that as a result he “he missed a chance to wear ‘drip’â€? at the Billboard Music Awards, which were going on that same night. Julien Aidelbaum, one of the festival’s founders, told PW the chaos that ensued on stage in Quebec, and that spilled into the street, was minor. “To be honest, there was no riot that happened,â€? he said. “It was very limited to a few fans that got on stage. Then, when that situation was under control, on the street, there was only two to three garbage cans thrown and that was pretty much it. We’re happy that most of it was done safely and no one got hurt. The major point for us as promoters was we need everything to be safe and sound, once this is done. That was really the word out to the police and everything. We didn’t want this to turn into something sad.â€? Vert, a Philly native, has an extensive history of cancelling performances. In March, he was a no-show at eh BUKU Music +Art Project festival in New Orleans. Additionally, a tour with rapper Playboi Carti was announced last year, but he later tweeted that he had decided to bow out. But keeping a positive attitude, Aidelbaum added they are not placing the blame on anyone for the incident. “Stuff like this happens, it’s out of our control,â€? he said. “I hope [Lil Uzi] gets back into the country at some point to make up for it, but we’re not frustrated about the whole situation. We do understand our fan frustrations. But, at the end of the day, we’re doing what’s necessary to make sure that everyone that’s unhappy is refunded and that everyone can move on. That’s the message that we want to send. We’re focusing on next year’s edition.â€? He also said that everyone who paid for the show on that speciďŹ c date will have an opportunity to have their money refunded by June 1. The Montreal Journal reported fans had been waiting for the rapper, whose real name is Symere Woods, for several hours before being told he was not going to make it. A Twitter post by organizers also went up that night that read: “Lil Uzi Vert will unfortunately not be able to perform tonight due to a lack of cooperation from Canada Customs. All ticket buyers will promptly receive an email for the refund procedure.â€? PW reached out to the rapper’s reps for comment, but did not receive a response by press time. SAVAGE LOVE

Shameful DAN SAVAGE

I

’ve been married to my husband for two years. Five months into our relationship (before we got married), he confessed he was an adult baby. I was so grossed out, I was literally ill. (Why would this great guy want to be like this?) I told him he would have to choose: diapers or me. He chose me. I believed him and married him. Shortly before the birth of our child, I found out that he’d been looking at diaper porn online. I lost it. He apologized and said he’d never look at diaper porn again. Once I was free to have sex again after the birth, it was like he wasn’t into it. When I asked what the deal was, he told me he wasn’t into sex because diapers weren’t involved. I broke down, and he agreed to talk to a counselor. But on the day we were supposed to go, he was mad about every little thing I did and then said he wasn’t going! I went crazy and called his mom and told her everything, and she said she found a diaper under his bed when he was 7! After this crisis, he agreed to work things out, but then I found adult-size diapers in the house – and not for the ďŹ rst time! I took a picture and sent it to him, and he told me that he was tired of me controlling him and he is going to do this when he wants. He also said he was mad at me for telling his mom. I told him no, absolutely not, he cannot do this. Then I found adult-size diapers in the house again this morning and freaked out. He says he never wants to discuss diapers with me again, and I’m afraid he might choose them over me! Please give me advice on how to make him understand that this is not him! This is who he chooses to be! And he doesn’t have to be this way! – Married A Disgusting Diaper Lover

First, MADDL, let’s calmly discuss this with a shrink. “There’s a fair bit of controversy over whether people can suppress fetishistic desires like this – and whether it’s healthy to ask them to do so,â€? said Dr. David Ley, a clinical psychologist, author, and AASECT-certiďŹ ed sex therapist. “Personally, I believe in some cases, depending on the support of their environment and personal relationships, it is possible, but only when these desires are relatively mild in intensity.â€?

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

Your husband’s interest in diapers – which would seem to go all the way back to at least age 7 – can’t be described as mild. “Given the apparent strength and persistence of her husband’s interest, I think it unlikely that suppression could ever be successful,â€? said Dr. Ley. “In this case, I think MADDL’s desire for her husband to have sexual desires she agrees with in order for her to be married to him is a form of sexual extortion, i.e., ‘If you love me and want to be with me, you’ll give up this sexual interest that I ďŹ nd disgusting.’ Without empathy, mutual respect, communication, unconditional love, and willingness to negotiate and accommodate compromises and win-win solutions, this couple is doomed, regardless of diapers under the bed.â€? “The common misconception with ABDL (adult baby diaper lovers) is that they are into inappropriate things – like having an interest in children – and this couldn’t be more wrong,â€? said Pup Jackson, a twentysomething diaper lover and kink educator. “AB is not always sexual. Sometimes it’s a way for a person to disconnect from their adult life and become someone else. With DLs, they aren’t necessarily into age play – they enjoy diapers and the way they feel, much like people enjoy rubber, Lycra, or other materials. To understand her husband, MADDL needs to ask questions about why her husband enjoys diapers and ďŹ gure out how to deal with it – because a lot of people want/need these kinds of outlets in their life.â€? “Great guysâ€? can be into diapers; this is not who your husband “chooses to be,â€? since people don’t choose their kinks any more than they choose their sexual orientation; outing your husband to his mother was unforgivable and could ultimately prove to be a fatal-toyour-marriage violation of trust; a counselor isn’t going to be able to reach into your husband’s head and yank out his kink. (“I absolutely hate that therapists are seen as sexual enforcers who are supposed to carve away any undesirable sexual interests and make people ‘normal,’â€? said Dr. Ley.) Your husband told you he was into diapers before he married you – he laid his kink cards on the table at ďŹ ve months, long before you scrambled your DNA together – and he backed down when you freaked out. He may have thought he could choose you over his kink, MADDL, but now he knows what Dr. Ley could’ve told you two before the wedding: Suppressing a kink just isn’t possible. So if you can’t live with the diaper lover you married – if you can’t accept his kink, allow him to indulge it on his own, and refrain from blowing up when you stumble onto any evidence – do that diaper-loving husband of yours a favor and divorce him.
