S

o I have this friend who has worked in ticket sales for various sports teams throughout the city. We love to get together, watch the Phillies on television, sip on some bourbon and shoot the shit.

Last week, we were watching a meaningless May affair between the Phillies and the Rockies. Stadium was sparse â&#x20AC;&#x201C; as is to be expected for a May game against a non-divisional opponent â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but what we both noticed is just how many people were sitting solo in the ballpark. The focus of this particular game soon became less the game and more the people who we could ďŹ nd spending time solo in the ballpark. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sad thing is theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re probably season ticket holders too,â&#x20AC;? I joked. But it was no laughing matter. According to my buddy, who has sold everything from single-game ticket sales to premium seating, those solo fans probably shelled out big bucks to sit alone. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know how many calls we get from people who buy full season plans for one,â&#x20AC;? my buddy said, who has had stints with a number of Philadelphia teams. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People who literally call up to make installment plans to reserve one seat. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a thing, man. We get those calls all the time.â&#x20AC;?

I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe him, so I called the Phillies and Eagles ticket ofďŹ ces to inquire.

Sure enough, if I wanted to, I could reserve a ticket for one for the season. In the case of the Phillies, the representative I spoke with even offered to pro-rate a full season plan just to get me in the building.

Pretending to be someone who was concerned by image, I asked the representative if this was a common thing.

Though he wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t able to provide an exact number of just how many single-seat season plans they have, he did conďŹ rm my friendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s claim â&#x20AC;&#x201C; even adding in a few 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

more tidbits of insight. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sure, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s normal; you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to feel bad about doing it,â&#x20AC;? said the Phillies representative. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We get people buying seasons for one all the time. A lot of times, you know itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot of retired people where itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just them and coming to a game gives them something to do and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll just buy one ticket. But we do get a lot of calls from people who just love baseball, but canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ďŹ nd anyone that would go with them so theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll purchase just one ticket.

Really, [itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s as easy as] you just talk to [one of our] full season sales [representative] and they can take care of all of that for you.â&#x20AC;?

Maybe Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m naive and this is something that everyone knew, but to me this knowledge came as a complete shock. I look at sporting events as a group activity, someone to tailgate with, high ďŹ ve when a big play happens, challenge to a hot dog eating contest on Dollar Dog Night. Perhaps these people are purists of the sport and would rather see a contest live; a thought that I guess helps the cause. But for every one of them, you know there has to be that same number that just doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have anyone to invite.

And you know what? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sad.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve lived in Philly all my life and am well aware of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;no new friendsâ&#x20AC;? vibe we Philadelphians give off. Shit, you can barely get a smile from someone while youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re walking down the street so I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even imagine what itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be like to be a transplant from another city, town or even country and attempt to break through.

I was on a Reddit forum from awhile back and the whole thing was about just how hard it is to meet people here. Some people within the forum even noted that they had to go above and beyond and change the way theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d normally behave, just to stand out.

But other people made great suggestions. Joining sports leagues and meetup groups are an easy way to break the ice, but if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re naturally a shy person then that only becomes a nice thought.

So I offer this. This summer, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s do our part in meeting some new people, Philly.

AT&T is downsizing its stores and call centers in the Philly area and increasing its third-party outsourcing by 21 percent. According to labor organizers, some 40,000 AT&T workers across the country walked off the job last week for the â&#x20AC;&#x153;ďŹ rst-ever wireless worker strike in the telecom industry.â&#x20AC;?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all about outsourcing to third parties that pay poverty wages, which now represent 60 percent of the telecom giantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s retail stores and call centers. This impacts hundreds of Philadelphians, so if you see any striking workers outside AT&Tâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s retail stores across the city, show them some love.

Sunscreen Schmidt Four years ago, Phillies Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt was diagnosed with stage four skin cancer known as melanoma. On a sunny day walking around the Navy Yard, Schmidt realized he needed to apply sunscreen but there was none around. His personal need will soon become public action. Roundhouse removal Plans outline Mayor Kenneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s intent to move Philly Police headquarters

fter abandoning former Mayor Michael Nutterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s proposal to relocate the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Police Headquarters to West Philly, Mayor Jim Kenney last week introduced a plan to move the facility to the former home of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The white, 18-ďŹ&#x201A;oor, 340-foot tower at 400 N. Broad St. has been vacant since 2012, a year after developer Bart Blatstein paid $22.65 million to buy the building from the newspaperâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parent company in the wake of the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bankruptcy. The Inquirer, Daily News and philly.com all moved to the former Strawbridgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s building at Eighth and Market streets, although the papersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; illuminated lettering still appears on the 0$< -81(

facade of the Broad Street property.

In a May 24 news conference, Kenney said the Broad Street site is

ning to move the police administrative ofďŹ ces as his tenure as mayor expired in January 2016.

Under Kenneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plan, the 466,000-square-foot former newspaper building will house the police departmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s central administration as well as the 6th and 9th districts, a uniďŹ ed police and ďŹ re communications unit, the medical examinerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ce and lab, as well as various police units such as homicide, human resources and command center.

The site is more geographically central than the 46th and Market site and is more easily accessible for employees and visitors commuting from the Northeast, North and South regions of the city. About 600 people work at the current Police Headquarters at Eighth and Race streets. â&#x20AC;&#x153;After evaluating several different sites and weighing all the different considerations for over a year, we came to the conclusion that this space would provide taxpayers more for their money,â&#x20AC;? Kenney said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Not only can we locate more units in one space, but this location is also more accessible to the public and creates ďŹ scal and operations efďŹ ciencies for the city and our criminal justice partners.â&#x20AC;?

The city will lease the property from a private company Blatstein controls. The building was completed in 1924 to house the Inquirer. The Daily News moved there in 1965.

Blatstein previously proposed converting it into a casino and a hotel.

Anne Fadullon, the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s planning and development director, said the city will pay $290 million to renovate the building, about the same it would have paid to ďŹ nish renovating Nutterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chosen location at 46th and Market. The city has already paid about $50 million to acquire and renovate that site, but expects to recover some of those expenses by selling the current Police Headquarters, commonly known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;the Roundhouse,â&#x20AC;? the medical examinerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ce and the 6th district station. The city will also look for someone to buy 4601 Market St., Fadullon said.

The police department has used Eighth and Race as its headquarters since 1963.

Reflecting on 42 years of great journalism with WHYYâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Terry Gross

tâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a remarkable list.

The list is the thousands of names who have sat on the other side of a microphone from legendary journalist Terry Gross. Gross, who has bounced questions off everyone from B.B. King to Amy Tan is celebrating the 30th anniversary of her show â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fresh Air with Terry Gross this year and is doing it live on June 9 at the Kimmel Center.

Her guest will be Seth Meyers from NBCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Late Night withâ&#x20AC;? but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not the guest as much as the host who will captivate audiences the pragmatic way Gross has been able to for 42 years in the business. We catch up with her ahead of the live taping to talk the transition of radio since sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s started, her most memorable guests, and honest opinion of a Philly cheesesteak.

You look back and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been 42 years of great journalism, 30 of those spent with National Public Radio. Do you ever wonder where the time has gone?

I am kind of shocked, because when I started in radio the most Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d hoped for is that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d let me stay and keep doing it. I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even sure Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be able to have a career. But by my standards, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a great career. I love my work, the people I work with. The other shocking thing for me is that radio has always had this [stigma] of being a profession of gypsies, because especially in music radio, DJs always went from one station to another, at least they did back then. So to stay in one place for so long, but to have traveled [a message] around the country without having to travel around the country has been great.

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the importance of plying your trade all these years here in Philadelphia?

I like the city, but I also like New 0$< -81(

York a lot, I just donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d ever want to live there. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just too crazy and too crazy expensive. Washington [D.C.] is such a political climate, so [Philadelphia] really, is just a very comfortable space as a city and as a radio/ TV station. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a nice scale. Plus, I met my husband in Philadelphia...and the people Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been able to work with like my executive producer Danny Miller, who Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve known since 1978, I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have wanted to do the show without him, so to be able to keep the show going Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not sure that wouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve happened if either of us have moved. When we started working on â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fresh Airâ&#x20AC;? together, the show was a local three-hour a day, ďŹ ve-day a week program. I came here in 1975 and he arrived in 1978, so a long time.

What gets Terry Gross excited about coming to work every day?

Talking to the guests, I like doing the interviews and I like the people I work with and I like working as a team. I have just the right amount of balance in my life of stuff that I do on my own in my ofďŹ ce or at home and stuff that we do as a team. I think most of us have that balance and I think having that makes the time when we are collaborating as a team that much better.

You have a remarkable ability of asking the question that everyone wants to know, but no one would think youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d ask for fear of the response or getting a no comment. Yet you ask these questions you do and get an honest response. How? Before the interview, I try to learn as much as I can about the person. If theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re an author I will have read their work, if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a journalist I wouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve read their series of articles, so I think the ďŹ rst step for me is knowing who the person is and knowing why Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m talking to them. When I ask something thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

In front of a microphone has been home for Terry Gross for over four decades. intimate, whether it be about religion or sexual orientation, illness or dying, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m asking usually because I know itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve thought about and often because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a part of their work in some way. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had to draw on something related to that in their life. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just go on and say â&#x20AC;&#x153;so, tell me about your sexual orientation,â&#x20AC;? you know? It comes from a place of relative conďŹ dence that they will be comfortable with it and that it wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be [deemed] intrusive or inappropriate.

Your favorite interview over the past 42 years.

My most surprising interview has been with [author] Maurice Sendak.

The premise of the interview was that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d just written a childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s book and it was his ďŹ rst in many years. And Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d been [routinely] interviewing him over the years, usually when he had a new piece of work Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d talk to him and this dated back to the 1970s or 1980s.

So, he had this childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s book but he wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t well enough to come to a studio. So I ďŹ gured Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d call him up, wish him well, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d schmooze for a couple of minutes and that would be that.

But he just started talking about all these things he was going through, like watching his friends die, reďŹ&#x201A;ecting on his brotherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death, his longtime companionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death and it just became this incredibly moving interview where Maurice was actually reďŹ&#x201A;ecting on life

and his approaching death and what itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like to lose people that you love.

An interview youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d rather forget?

My two most famous awkward interviews were with [KISS lead singer] Gene Simmons who is just incredibly obnoxious and Bill Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Reilly, who actually walked out during the interview while questioning [my impartiality] while making a speech on how I should get out of the radio business. [Laughs].

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interesting how one of us is still in the broadcasting business.

Wow. Do tell, Terry...

Yeah, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a long story, I had interviewed [Minnesota senator] Al Franken who had just ďŹ nished writing a book called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right.â&#x20AC;? Part of it was about Fox News and Bill Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Reilly. So some of my interview with Al Franken was about that, so I thought that it was only fair that I invite Bill Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Reilly, who coincidentally had also wrote a book...so anyway, he thought I was nice to Al Franken and my time with him was 40 minutes of defamation and if I thought it was fair I should get out of the business.

Were you in anyway remotely defamatory?

No. I thought if he couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take a 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

few challenging questions; look, this is a guy who prides himself on being the best interviewer in America and [he] canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take a few challenging questions himself, you know then heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s either incredibly insecure or incredibly disingenuous.

How had radio journalism â&#x20AC;&#x201C; check that, journalism as a whole â&#x20AC;&#x201C; changed for the better or worse in the rapid rise of digital media?

I think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been great. I say both as a producer but also as a listener. I do most of my listening now on my phone, well actually my iPod. You know, one of those iPods that does everything but allow you to make calls? [Editorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s note: best thing this reporter has heard anyone say in a long time]. You can take it to places where you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care if you drop it because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not your phone? I listen to the radio through websites on my iPod. I think you really have a whole different set of listeners through podcasts who arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t available when we are normally on the air. So they can listen to the show when they want to hear it, so I think thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great.

When you decide to hang up the microphone, how would you most like to be remembered? Both as a journalist and a person?

I want the people Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve spoken with to think I was fair with them and also ideally I would like them to think I understood who they were and helped them explain who they were. I am hoping that our body of work as a program and the work that our staff has put in over the years, lives on and outlives my career and my life. I hope it exists as an archive thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s accessible to whoever wants to hear it because there are so many wonderful people that are in that archive that I know would inspire.

ollowing the November presidential election, thousands took to the streets and to the internet to voice their support for womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rights, and ultimately how these rights may be hindered

by President-elect Donald Trump.

Six months later, the Lutheran Settlement House (1340 Frankford Ave.) is providing yet another platform for these voices during its #BreakTheSilence event on Thursday, June 8 from 4-8 p.m.

Gender, sexuality, consent and self-care are all on the table for discussion as community members with come together to chat the current state of womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rights.

Sam Merkt, a program coordinator at the Lutheran Settlement House explained how the idea for this event stemmed from the organizationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Students Aiming For Excellence (SAFE) after-school program.

The initiative known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;A Community Youth Movementâ&#x20AC;? is comprised of roughly 18 students who meet for three hours after school at Lutheran Settlement House. â&#x20AC;&#x153;After our last big event in February was a success, the students wanted to do one on womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rights that was more

workshop-based,â&#x20AC;? Merkt said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how we got the idea for the #BREAKTHESILENCE event, and we hope to get as many people out as we can, including other youth and adults who live in the area and who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know that this program even exists.â&#x20AC;?

The event is scheduled to feature a silent performance where members will stand along the outskirts of the Lutheran Settlement House property on Frankford Avenue with duct tape across their mouths for 30 minutes. Afterward, they will remove the duct tape, symbolizing the breaking their silence, and three spoken-word pieces will be delivered. â&#x20AC;&#x153;One will be a story about a womanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s experience with sexual assault and how she overcame it,â&#x20AC;? Merkt said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Another will be about overcoming a hard relationship and ďŹ nding love in oneself, and the last student story will be about the death of her 2-month-old cousin and the experience she went through.â&#x20AC;?

The impetus for all of this? â&#x20AC;&#x153;We held a group â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;family dinnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; around the time right after Trump was elected, and we asked the students what issues they cared about right now,â&#x20AC;? Merkt explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We decided that womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

rights were particularly important at the time, especially because there are a lot of young women currently involved in our program.â&#x20AC;?

Merkt said that after choosing womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rights as the topic, the group broke the genre into smaller individual subcategories on which each dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lesson plan would focus around. Ranging from dismantling rape culture and consent to Planned Parenthood, abortion and even slavery, these topics explored general womanhood, its history and how it is being impacted by the political climate. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of high schools are currently eliminating things like sex education from their curriculum, so we feel that it is important that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re able to talk about these topics in another space that is chosen and safe,â&#x20AC;? Merkt said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These students choose to come together every day to explore these different topics, including many of which are thought of as taboo and arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t readily discussed. It feels important to me that we allow the students to speak up about them.â&#x20AC;?

In attracting these high school students from all over Philly to the SAFE group, the Lutheran Settlement House typically reaches out to guidance counselors and social workers in addition to posting ďŹ&#x201A;yers. The goal? Empower students to go on and have their voices heard without ďŹ lters while providing them with the resources they need to develop their own voice and healthy relationships.

Ultimately, the SAFE program came as a year-long version of the organizationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Summer STAR Leadership Academy, a learning program that teaches teens ages 14-18 about healthy relationships and develops leadership skills to prevent teen dating violence in communities. To intertwine a focus on womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rights, each week two workshops are held on this topic speciďŹ cally.

Overall, Merkt stressed that #BreakTheSilence is an event for the community-at-large, as it allows students to have their voices heard outside the bubble of school, and for society to listen to what theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re saying. Additionally, it will allow the community to see what the Lutheran Settlement Houseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s S.A.F.E. program is doing each day, while expressing student values and what the next generation of working adults expects to see of the world. The 10-day festival and education of all things beer returns this week as the Philly Beer Week caravan rolls across the Greater Philadelphia Region. The event, celebrating a decade, gives beer enthusiasts (OK, beer nerds) a chance to get a bit of education and, of course, partake in some of the best beers from all over the world.

Beer Week ports for the next 10 days beginning June 1. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I actually started as a food runner over at Bru three years ago and before that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d never worked in the industry in my life so it was a interesting experience,â&#x20AC;? said Williams. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re an outsider looking in, you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really see just how hard people [in the industry] work, I always joke that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the biggest group of underachievers ever. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a collection of the smartest most talented people, people who are awesome singers, great artists, whatever. Not that those talents are going to waste, but theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re very blue collar, which to me ďŹ ts the theme of Philadelphia.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a city of hustle which I love.â&#x20AC;?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Williamsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; hustle over the past three years that helped him land his role at Cinder, but also his vast knowledge of different beers and ciders. Listen to him discuss what Cinder has on tap for PBW and, to be honest, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more impressive than nerdy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Last year, we really saw a major demand for not just beer, but really good ciders,â&#x20AC;? said Williams. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had six originally on draft, but weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve since bumped that up to eight.

Mostly as a seasonal change, we dropped two lines and bumped up two of our cider lines. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re always running Jack of the Pear, which is our house cider and then the second line is usually a local. We try to rep a lot of local breweries and there are so many great cider ones around here that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re never in short supply. The last two lines are reserved for the French and the Basque [ciders]. We try to keep that old style going as true cider enthusiasts are going to look for those.â&#x20AC;?

Williamsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; personal favorite? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a huge fan of the French ciders and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to have a few running,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been doing it right for years and the Perry ciders [Perry ciders can only be called that if theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re made with French pears], I think they are deďŹ nitely worth trying.â&#x20AC;?

But the excitement truly stems from an opportunity to work the annual event and educate consumers on whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in their glass.

Something that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ďŹ nd Williams making a return to radar work anytime soon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Honestly? Beer Week is what allows a place like this to be open,â&#x20AC;? said Williams.

The fact that people are so nerdy, but in a good way, because Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a huge beer nerd too; Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m pretty new to this but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve learned to love this. The fact that people are this excited about beer and the culture that surrounds it, frankly, allows me to have a job like this.â&#x20AC;?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been 10 years of Philly Beer Week and Philly Loves Beer right here in the City of Brotherly Love and we still have questions. The event has become so much more than drinking suds to excess, there is a scientiďŹ c component to it, a humanitarian component and even a chance for lovers of beer art to convene.

With that said, PW will try to answer some of those frequently asked questions and provide everything you need to know about one of Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more revered events â&#x20AC;&#x201C; now a decade in the making.

Philly Beer Week or Philly Loves Beer?

Philly Beer Week was formerly the name of the nonproďŹ t organization behind the event, which has two employ3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

ees and a 17-member board of directors made up of the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s libation industry leaders. Earlier this year, it changed its name to Philly Loves Beer in an effort to expand its impact with a year-round mission. PLB has some broad and ambitious goals: to â&#x20AC;&#x153;draw attention to Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Best Beer-Drinking City,â&#x20AC;? to â&#x20AC;&#x153;create beer-literate consumersâ&#x20AC;? and to â&#x20AC;&#x153;act as a resource for â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;all things beerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in the Greater Philadelphia region.â&#x20AC;? But at the end of the day, the 10-day series of events that make up Philly Beer Week is still the main attraction.

Was Philly the first to do beer week?

Beer-centric events have a storied history, but in terms of ofďŹ cial â&#x20AC;&#x153;beer weekâ&#x20AC;? branding, Philly organizers say they were trendsetters in 2008, along with Syracuse. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been so successful that more than 100 cities across the world have copied

the whole idea,â&#x20AC;? Tom Peters, owner of Monkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s CafĂŠ in Center City, said at a press conference last week. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And so thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an Amsterdam Beer Week. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a Brussels Beer Week. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all over the worldâ&#x20AC;ŚMontrealâ&#x20AC;ŚIn fact, I was invited to go give a lecture at the Tokyo Beer Week next year, so Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have to brush up on my Japanese, which is zero.â&#x20AC;?

I want to show up and drink beers.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been doing this [job] for about seven years and my job entails buying all the beer for all of our family of restaurants. That involves pricing, writing draft descriptions, placing and receiving orders you name it, training staff on what the beer is. A big part of that job is trying the beer so that opens up the opportunity to try hundreds of different kinds of beer without having to buy any myself.

I get paid to drink beer which is pretty sweet. But I love numbers, I love writing descriptions and having an opportunity to romanticize the beer. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot of fun.

we had tap takeover featuring ďŹ ve different breweries on the same night and all the brewers and owners and reps and CEOs they were all here; it was a packed house before we even opened and it was because weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re talking ďŹ ve really sexy breweries from all along the East Coast, four of which had never been in Philadelphia so everyone wanted to get their hands on one. We had a couple kegs that werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t here yet, but the owners were. So we had one of the beer reps from [the former] Bella Vista Distributors [in Philadelphia]..drive his car north of here to Binghamton or just south of Scranton somewhere, pick up a keg off of an awaiting freight train, throw it in his car, throw bags of ice all over it and haul ass back here. We didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care, we were prepared to pay for all his speeding tickets for all the points heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d accumulate on his license, we needed that beer.

Mind you, for a week and a half leading up to this moment weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re calling and asking â&#x20AC;&#x153;when is this beer getting hereâ&#x20AC;? and getting run around. We opened at 4 p.m. and this guy said he did 90-100 mph on the highway to get here.

Thank God, he wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stopped having to explain why thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a keg in his trunk while heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s driving twice the legal limit. It was crazy, but he got here with time to spare and we opened the keg and it was like winning the World Series, everyone cheered, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re high ďŹ ving this kid, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s drenched in sweat. Fucking insane, but thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what beer week is all about.

For starters, the Beer Week here is over a week and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beer week in other cities that are only three days long, which is not fair. We have an advantage here in that we have a ton of great local craft brews, so I feel like we have our pick of the best.

Every city has a TGI Fridayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s but every city doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a Cambridge, or a Monkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s [Cafe]. Hell, not every country has a Monkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. This city really has just a focus not just on imported beer, but local beer which is a scene that is just getting ridiculous and only getting better and better. We are beer blessed here in Philly, it is almost a religion and beer is the Holy Water. Q
