Bikes, beer & burlesque Yeah, that sounds like a memorable week in the city.
T
hree big events dominate this week’s Philly cultural calendar: the return of everyone’s favorite ten-day craft-beer extravaganza, Philly Beer Week (see page 14); the premiere of what promises to be a new annual performance showcase, the Philadelphia Burlesque Festival (see page 4); and the newly rebranded Philadelphia International Cycling Classic, the latest installment of the hardcore bike race that famously takes pedalers up the steep incline known as the Manayunk Wall. PW correspondent Timaree Schmit writes on page 12 about how the Cycling Classic fits into the overall boom of Philly biking in recent years. Mayor Michael Nutter agrees: “Philadelphia has had a culture of cycling for decades, which has definitely added to the popularity of the annual June race,” he says. “At the same time, the race shows how exciting and fun cycling can be to those who haven’t been on a bike in a while, so there’s a lot of crossover interest creating an exciting cycling community.” Of late, that community has enjoyed new bike lanes, bike paths and the launch of the Indego bike-share program. “We expect to see more bikes in the city in the months and years to come,” the mayor says, “as well as more homegrown pro racers in the Philadelphia International Cycling Classic.” n

The Philadelphia Burlesque Festival
E
xuberant, creative, sassy burlesque acts blending vintage charm and modern attitude can be found on stage around Philly every week of the year— and yet, somehow, we don’t have an annual festival showcasing them. This week, that gets remedied, as local performers Liberty Rose and Dottie Riot are producing the city’s first Philadelphia Burlesque Festival, with four nights of shows featuring the sauciest, wink-wink-nudge-nudgiest comedic sensualists around—Philly locals as well as regional favorites from New York, D.C. and Baltimore. “It was totally time for this to happen,”
4 | Philly Weekly | May 27-June 3, 2015 | philadelphiaweekly.com
Liberty Rose says. “Philadelphia’s burlesque scene is so vibrant, and, you know, places like Wisconsin have burlesque festivals— and we’re an actual city!” Highlights will include two headlining performers from the Burlesque Hall of Fame, Ray Gunn and Sydni Deveraux, as well as troupes like Philly’s Peek-a-Boo Revue. “On Saturday,” Rose says, “there’s an act this woman Nina La Voix does that’s just out of control. It’s called ‘Attack of the 50Food Twerker,’ and that’s all I’m going to say.” Also: Don’t miss the Ben Franklin tribute act that same night. —STEPHEN H. SEGAL

Philadelphia: Bike City? This week’s Philadelphia International Cycling Classic is one more reason to embrace the city’s ever-growing two-wheeled culture.
A
t times, it feels like Philadelphia is too rough for me. In the dead of winter, when the seemingly endless grey, cold days have worn my enthusiasm down to a mere will to survive, I wonder if I should give up, move to San Diego and teach Pilates on the beach. As a full-time cyclist, it’s especially daunting: The battered roads become tire-popping obstacle courses that, under different circumstances, might be a fun adventure—if I wasn’t in constant danger of death and dismemberment by drivers. Because I’ve lived springtime in Philly, though, I’m able to endure. In much the same way we accept that teenagers will be angsty pimple-faced jerks for a while before they grow into awesome adults, so do we wait out our winters, reassured by memories of the glorious warm sun and blooming jizz trees. Here’s why: Come May, it’s fantastic to be a cyclist in our city. The terrain is generally flat, laid out in an easily navigable grid, and destinations are rarely more than a 15-minute ride away. Sure, some drivers feel irrationally entitled to the entirety of the pavement, and the science of stop lights and crosswalks eludes many pedestrians, but we’re making serious headway on bikeability. Dedicated bike lanes are up 13 percent under the Nutter administration (though still relatively rare), and with twice as much bike commuter traffic as NYC, we’re number-one among U.S. cities with populations over a million. Indego, the city’s new bike-share program, has been an overwhelming success in its first month of operation, with imminent plans for expansion. And the city 12 | Philly Weekly | May 27-June 3, 2015 | philadelphiaweekly.com
recently announced that 14 miles of new bike lanes will be installed—including, for the first time, lanes that are physically protected from car traffic. With the addition of more sharrows and restriping, we’re looking at 70 miles of improved streets in 2015. The progress has been especially apparent for women. Organizations like Women Bike PHL have done a great deal in making riding more accessible: Members swap advice, vent frustrations and coordinate meet ups, making the ride home from work feel more like a community experience and less like The Hunger Games. Women-only courses in urban riding basics are available for noobs who crave the freedom of biking but lack the experience to do it safely, and restorative yoga classes are offered specifically for the weary cyclist. The good news in Philly extends to the professional level, as Union Cycliste Internationale is holding its only Women’s World Cup at this year’s Philadelphia International Cycling Classic. The Classic—also commonly known to locals as the Manayunk Bike Race—is making history by framing the women’s event as the feature competition of the day and offering equal prize money to male and female winners. This kind of gender parity is almost unheard of in professional sports. But given that the bicycle has long been intertwined with feminist empowerment, as a tool that enabled women’s freedom physically and politically starting in the age of the suffragettes, it’s awfully satisfying to see a bike race rolling out as one of the first places where male and female athletes can truly be treated equally.
It’s not all roses: Philly still has a long way to go in making biking a viable option for everyone who wants to ride the city. Between the trolley tracks, thieves and inattentively-opened driver’s-side doors, being a cyclist in this town continues to require a degree of masochistic fortitude and daredevildom. There were 551 bike crashes in 2014, and already this year, there have been five cyclist deaths. The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia believes infrastructure design and enforcement are even more effective solutions than community education but points out that the most critical factor is simply increasing awareness of bikers. We’re much safer when there are more of us: Drivers are more likely to look out and become accustomed to respectfully sharing the road. Me? I’m in it for the long haul. Aside from the cost savings over driving, biking is also a bit of activism, helping to build a more sustainable future-minded culture that uses less gas at the same time it shapes fantastic glutes. The past winters may have worn me down, and the next one will certainly test my limits again—but I’m bolstered by faith that it’s only getting better from here. n

The joyful weirdness of Philly Beer Week
Cat races, drag queens and other colorful ways to enjoy downing a cold one. By BRIAN FREEDMAN @WineUpdate
P
hilly Beer Week 2015 is just a few days away: Time to start hydrating in preparation, lining your stomach with suds-absorbing carbs, and plotting out your plan of attack. With an astounding array of breweries and venues across town all showcasing their finest wares for 10 days straight, from May 29 through June 7, you’ll need a strong game plan to make the most of everything on offer. There are too many options to list here—see the full schedule at phillybeerweek.org— but here are a bunch happening between now and next Wednesday we’re particularly excited about.
Opening Tap
Fri., May 29, 6–10pm. 23rd Street Armory. This is the official kickoff bash, and from 6–7pm, VIP ticketholders ($92) can get started an hour before general admission-goers ($46), gaining access to a buffet and a few special beers. Regardless of when you walk in, though, you’ll be treated to a mind-spinning range of brews, including the magnificently named Leuven on a Prayer, which, as the Beer Week website puts it, is a “collaboration beer with Belgian brewers Brouwerij Hof ten Dormaal and local giants Free Will.”
Root (Beer) Floats in the Courtyard Sat., May 30, 10am–3pm. Jerry’s Bar.
As a parent of two young daughters, I feel it’s my duty to include them in as many of the great activities that the city offers as I possibly can. Jerry’s Bar is offering a Saturday morning treat my wife and I will be able to enjoy on an entirely different level: Sprecher soft and hard root beers, Little Baby’s ice cream, and a donation of $2 to the Ronald McDonald House for every root beer float sold.
Smokin’ Betty’s, bringing together performers like the Goddess Isis and Sisters of Sin with an assortment of limited-release brews from breweries including Evil Genius, Flying Fish, Oskar Blues, Yards and more.
5 O’Clock Shave with Kimpton Hotels Sun., May 31, 2–5pm. Hotel Palomar
Looking for a super-manly event, but secretly weary of hipster bacon happenings? This new Beer Week offering gathers the Duke Barber Co.’s barbers alongside Barren Hill Brewery’s beer for an afternoon of straightrazor face-shaving for charity.
Vintage Dogfish Head Vol. 1 Tues., June 2, 6pm–1:30am. Fiume.
Great beer, like great wine, often has the ability to age and improve with time. This is your chance to see how the passage of the years affects some of the best brews around, with aged bottles of Chateau Jiahu, Life & Limb, Ta Henket, Sah Tea, Hellhound On My Ale and more.
Brooklyn & Kensington Quarters Fried Chicken Popup Tues., June 2, 6pm–midnight. Prohibition Taproom.
It’s fried chicken and beer. Don’t overthink, just go.
Feline 500 Race for the Catnip Tues., June 2, 6–8:30pm. Doobies Bar.
Answering the longstanding question, “Can I really help improve the lives of poor, homeless kitties by drinking beer?” with a resounding yes, the Feline 500 will see Philadelphia Brewing Co. and Commonwealth Cidery provide delicious drafts for an evening of cat racing.
BBQ: Broads, Brews & Queens
Whistle, Little Piggy
It’s easily one of the most gloriously bedazzled Beer Week events each year: the annual craft-beer drag show at
Whistle Pig Rye, Long Trail Brewery and a pig roast. It may take all nine hours of the event to tear yourself away. n
Sat., May 30, 9pm-mid. Smokin’ Betty’s.

Wed., June 3, 5pm–2am. The Twisted Tail.
Philly Beer Week (which actually spans two weeks) is going to be chockfull-o’ fantastic beers, and there are many worth going out of your way to try. Allagash Midnight Brett is one of them. This deep brown beer is part of their wild ale program and is generally in short supply. A woody brown color, it gives off aromas of red fruits and candy, with just a little bit of acidic tang in the nose. That tartness is a presence in the sip, too, which is also highlighted by light chocolate, cherries, and wood. The sourness is mild; so is the funk. But the deliciousness sure isn’t. Look for it to make special appearances at the May 29 tap takeovers at City Tap House Logan Square and Memphis Taproom, and the May 30 Allagash event at Bru Craft & Wurst.

yards 20th Anniversary Sour. We’re going to break the
unwritten rules of this column for a moment by recommending you try a beer even we haven’t had the pleasure of sampling yet. We’re talking about Yards’ 20th Anniversary Sour, brewed to debut during Philly Beer Week. Here’s what we know: this ultra-limited beer has been assembled from several different wild ales, some of them aged for up to three years. Among the beers being blended into the batch are a Merlot barrel-aged version of their saison, which was dosed with Brett for added funk. Soured Brawler and others are also part of the mix. Oh, and they’re making just 30 sixtels of it, so it will be gone FAST. It’s debuting at the Yards Kick-off at Good Dog on May 29. Don’t be surprised if it doesn’t last more than 24 hours. See you there!
3
Schmaltz Brewing Funky Jewbelation. Philly Beer
Week is an ideal time to try those big, crazy beers you don’t indulge in on an everyday basis. Well, how does a blend of six different imperial lagers aged in booze barrels sound to you? Funky Jewbelation not only combines various megalagers aged in bourbon and whiskey barrels for anywhere from three months to over a year, it then sours them with wild yeast for added insanity. Yikes! This beer is more complex than calculus. Figs, barnyard funk, sour cherries and tartness are only one part of an equation that also includes wood notes, sharp booze, and chewy caramel. The real surprise, though, is that it also includes brisk hop character. If you want your hair blown back, attend the Schmaltz tap takeover at Barcade on May 31, where this will be featured, or try it at Pitchers Pub.

Firestone Walker Parabola. Firestone
Walker’s anniversary blends are epic examples of the art of beer blending, and they wouldn’t exist without base beers like Sucaba, Velvet Merkin, and Parabola, all of which usually make up a percentage of those annual delights. Even on their own these are special beers—Parabola chief among them. It’s one of the best barrel-aged stouts in the country, making it a must-try for Philly Beer Week. Imagine liquefied cigars mixed together with bourbon-soaked chocolate cake, Irish coffee, vanilla, and charred wood, and you’re only just scratching the surface. It’s viscous, potent, and one of the best beers you will ever drink. It will also be part of the Coast to Coast Pool Party with Firestone and Victory at City Tap House University City on June 4, so get yourself down there and try a truly epic brew.
5
Carton HopPun. In
the last six to nine months or so, New Jersey’s Carton has gone from a hidden gem to one of the East Coast’s most in-demand small breweries. This has been thanks in part to stunning experiments like Regular Coffee, but as HopPun proves, they can do fantastic examples of “normal” beers, too. This American pale ale has a big, foamy white head that gives off aromas of pine and grapefruit. The taste offers well-balanced bitterness, with tastes of orange candy and toasted biscuits both part of the mix. Couple that with its remarkable drinkability, and you’ve got one of your new favorite pale ales. Amid all the craziness, Philly Beer Week will be the perfect time to try it. It will be at Prohibition Taproom, Lucky’s Last Chance and Hawthorne’s, so be sure to add it to your list.
3 THINGS TO TASTE ASAP S N ACK
No Evil Foods Stallion Dog at Morgan’s Pier
There are a whole bunch of snacks worth tasting on the new summer menu that Top Chef winner and Laurel owner Nick Elmi has cooked up for Morgan’s Pier as its chef in residence this year. The fancypants Japanese-skewed tater tots are memorable, as is the brightly tart tamarind coleslaw. But let’s cut to the chase: If you’re going to pop lunch or happy-hour munchies while you sit outside overlooking the Delaware, savoring that satisfyingly contradictory ambiance of fresh air, blue skies and industrial riverfront infrastructure, it’s the unique meatless hot dog you want to chow down on. A veggie sausage with long hots and scallions, it’s a welcome departure from other v-dog options around town: spicy, sparkling with mustard seeds and textured almost more like a burger than a frank—but in a good way. Seriously. Who it’s for: Young professionals getting a jump on the nightclub crowd; eaters who like a little zing; vegans with non-vegan friends and vice versa. Where to get it: Morgan’s Pier, 221 N. Columbus Blvd. morganspier.com —STEPHEN SEGAL

Carpaccio and cocktails at Pub & Kitchen
Pub & Kitchen is a mainstay on the Foobooz Top 50 Bars list, and this year they snatched the number-one spot. But they’re always tweaking the menu, taking risks, shaking up the cocktail list, keeping even superfans on their toes. And this gorgeous new yellowfin tuna carpaccio is right on time for summer. Tenderized into a paper-thin sheet of perfection, it’s lifted to higher heights with avocado, ramps and smoked sea salt, which provides an essential crunchy balance. With a revamped $7 happy hour-cocktails list that transports you to the Italian coast with amaros like averno and fernet, they’re trying something new. And they hit it on the head with the Aperol Spritz, where the bitter orange apertif gets mixed with lemon and sparkling Brut, a perfect mix of sweet, tart and refreshing. Who it’s for: Sophisticates who love half-price oysters and possess the steely patience of enduring yuppie child screams. Where to find it: Pub & Kitchen, 1946 Lombard St. thepubandkitchen.com —BILL CHENEVERT

Prince Edward Island mussels at Red Owl Tavern
Goat cheese on mussels?! What kind of blasphemous kitchen sorcery is this? may be your first thought at first sight of Red Owl Tavern’s new variation on their tender Prince Edward Island mussels—but your eyes cannot be trusted this time around. See, the seafood itself’s not what gets the boost in flavor from the chèvre Chef Jorge Chicas so smartly tosses onto each brimming bowl—it’s the broth, a smoky tomato-thickened soup punched up with spicy chorizo pieces and fresh chervil. Once the goat cheese melts into it, you’ve got yourself something so exquisite, sopping it with rustic grilled bread won’t be enough: You’ll want to pour it over your Cheerios every morning. And if you’re drinking, enjoy ‘em with the Smoke & Barrels, a heady, faintly-sweet kick in the pants. Who it’s for: Couples who like to share dishes, compulsive dippers, fans of foods in the clam family. Where to get it: Red Owl Tavern, 433 Chestnut St. redowltavern.com —SHEENA LESTER

Inside Giger’s realm
The new documentary about the legendary cinema artist shows us the real world he chose to live in. BY GENEVIEVE VALENTINE
F
or an artist who wore his psychosexual quagmire on his sleeve, H. R. Giger was often treated as a mystery. When interviewers approached him—whether as the subject of a documentary, or simply to discuss his creative contributions to cinematic landmarks ranging from the seminal Alien movies to the infamously never-made Jodorowsky’s Dune—they always seemed to hope the Swiss surrealist, who died last year, would reveal some one, single seed that led to his unsettling recurring themes, his pioneering biomechanical aesthetic that merged human sexuality with cold technology. Perhaps the most comforting aspect of Dark Star: H.R. Giger’s World, the new documentary directed by Belinda Sallin over some of the last months of Giger’s life, is that she seems content not to try. Instead, she settles for occasional glimpses into his early brushes with the macabre, and otherwise maintains an air of respectful appreciation. In some ways, this film is simply a guided tour through his home, rather than his psyche. And for fans, that might be enough.
The lovingly-filmed house tours reveal an artist for whom creation is an imperative: Every corner is packed with sketches, sculptures, paintings and just the sort of ephemera you’d imagine Giger collects. The centerpiece of it all might be the backyard railroad, which looks eerily as if he’s pre-abandoned it, its miniature train track winding around a somehowZodiac fountain and past a wall of baby heads. A psychatrist’s attempts to discuss birth trauma to give context to it all is a valiant effort, though it does little but remind us that some art is best left to speak for itself. Those hoping for insight from the man himself will be disappointed by Dark Star’s polite reserve. But for those hungry for archival footage or a look inside the citadel of his mind, this is a film that’s fond of being unsettled—which might suit its subject after all. n
Dark Star: H.R. Giger’s World will play at the Ritz at the Bourse, 400 Ranstead St. See landmarktheatres.com for upcoming movie schedules.

SAVAGE LOVE
by Dan Savage | Twitter: @FakeDanSavage
Call an ace an ace? Yes, you can decide you’re asexual at 50.
Y
ou often mention asexual people. I believe I may be one. I’m a 51-year-old woman. I’ve been separated from my opposite-sex partner for nearly nine years. I’ve been approached by a variety of men, each one interested in becoming “more than friends.” I haunt Craigslist’s “platonic m4w” section, but each time I reach out to someone, he turns out to want a FWB or NSA relationship. It’s frustrating! That part of my life—the sex part—is really and truly over! I had many sex partners for many years, I had a good run, and now I’m done. When I find someone attractive, I admire them in a nonsexual way. But I do masturbate. Not often. I can go two or three weeks without needing (or thinking about) release. When I do masturbate, it’s more of a “stretching activity” than a passionate requirement. Do true asexuals masturbate? Am I correct in identifying as asexual instead of heterosexual? Or am I a straight person who has simply retired from the field? —No Need For Sex “There’s some handy-dandy research on this topic,” said David Jay, founder of the Asexual Visibility and Education Network (AVEN). Jay is the world’s most prominent asexuality activist and widely acknowledged as the founder of the asexuality movement. Researchers at the University of British Columbia studied the masturbatory habits of asexual individuals and compared them to the masturbatory habits of people with low sexual desire (“Sexual Fantasy and Masturbation Among Asexual Individuals,” Morag A. Yule, Lori A. Brotto, and Boris B. Gorzalka, the Canadian Journal of Human Sexuality). “[They found that] the majority of asexual people (about 56 percent) masturbate on at least a monthly basis,” said Jay, compared to 75 percent of individuals with low sexual desire. “For a sizable chunk of us, this is about a sense of physical release rather than about sexual fantasy. Masturbation and partnered sex are very different things, and desiring one doesn’t mean that we automatically desire the other.” So, NNFS, the fact that you masturbate occasionally—as a “stretching activity” (ouch?)—doesn’t disqualify you from identifying as asexual. And while the fact that you were sexually active for many years, presumably happily, and always with men could mean you’re a straight lady with low to no sexual desire, you’re nevertheless free to embrace the asexual label if it works for you. “If you’re not drawn to be sexual with anyone, then you have a lot in common with a lot of people in the asexual community,” said Jay. “That being said, there’s no such thing as a ‘true’ asexual. If the word seems useful, use it. At the end of the day, what matters is how well we understand ourselves, not how well
we match some Platonic ideal of our sexual orientation, and words like ‘asexual’ are just tools to help us understand ourselves.” All those crazy labels—bi, gay, lesbian, straight, pansexual, asexual, etc.—are there to help us communicate who we are and what we want. Once upon a time, NNFS, you wanted heterosexual sex, you had heterosexual sex, and you identified as heterosexual. That label was correct for you then. If the asexual label is a better fit for you now, if it more accurately communicates who you are (now) and what you want (now), you have none other than David Jay’s permission to use it. “I also feel NNFS’s pain about Craigslist ‘strictly platonic’ ads,” said Jay. “But I’ve found there are plenty of people out there who are interested in hanging out if I simultaneously say ‘no’ to sex and ‘yes’ to an emotional connection. I wish NNFS the best of luck in finding some.” Follow AVEN on Twitter at @asexuality. Jay recommends The Invisible Orientation by Julie Decker to people who want to learn more about asexuality. And Asexual Outreach is currently raising funds via Indiegogo to help finance the first North American Asexuality Conference in Toronto this June and other outreach programs: indiegogo. com/projects/asexual-outreach. There’s this guy I stopped dating a few months ago, but we’ve remained friends. When we were still dating, he once wore a thong when we were having sex. He called it his “sexy underwear.” He said he wore it only if he really liked a woman. He also told me he tried using a vibrator and fingers in his ass and really enjoyed it. I wasn’t bothered, but I am curious to know if straight guys really wear thongs and enjoy having their asses played with. Could he be a gay? —What’s He Attracted To? That guy could be a gay, WHAT, but any guy could be a gay. There are, however, lots of straight guys out there who dig sexy underwear—and some mistakenly believe thongs qualify. There are also lots of straight guys out there who like having their asses played with—and some are secure enough in their heterosexuality to share that fact with the women in their lives. n
