I

tâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the most wonderful time of the year.

The hell with autumn foliage and pumpkin spiced lattes. Bundling up to stay warm has never been something that,s interested me, so besides revenue for the city, I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care less about a nice ďŹ re and ice skating at Winterfest.

Plus, my parents are both Jamaican born (and proud), so I think Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m genetically predisposed to be a tropical person.

Summer in Philadelphia is my shit.

Sure the heat is oppressive and the local television networks donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t let you forget it, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all the little things about the end of May until the beginning of September that make it real hard to get upset about, well, anything really.

Water ice, beer gardens, sundresses.

Concerts, movies in the park (sans Rittenhouse rodents), sitting outside at restaurants, the people watching...itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s everything.

But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just the obvious, the hoods all come alive with their own unique blend of awesome. Mr. Softee trucks, all the little kids popping wheelies on bikes that are bigger than they are down city streets, even the late-night sound of illegal dirt bikes running up and down avenues, yeah thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s summer.

With that said, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kind of why Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m excited for this annual issue. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s my ďŹ rst but even before I came on as PW latest editor installment, the Summer Guide was a must read. Each page turn with all of the multitude of events to choose from over the next 2-3 months truly invited warm temperatures in and Old Man Winter the fuck out.

In this issue, we share our picks for the best outside eateries in the city. We tell you where to watch a good ďŹ&#x201A;ick both inside and outside this summer and what the best ďŹ&#x201A;icks of the summer are going to be. We found that if you want to skip town the Shore needs your help to reach a forecasted $28 million in revenue (weather permitting, of course). We take a look at the summer anthems you have to pump in your ride from the Main Line to Mayfair.

In advance of the Roots Picnic, we caught up with Black Thought the leader of the Legendary Roots Crew to talk everything from the festival, now a decade old, becoming the unofďŹ cial (ofďŹ cial) summer kickoff party to where in Philly he gets his haircut. Did you know he commutes from New York to Philly four days a week to workout?

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dedication, but to this South Philly native, he wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have it any other way.

STATE OF THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY By the time youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re reading this, Philadelphia will have a pretty good sense of who its next district attorney will be. The winner of the primary election on Tuesday, May 16, will be the odds-on favorite to triumph over Republican DA candidate Beth Grossman in Novemberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s general election. While voter turnout figures werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t available by presstime, chances are no more than 15 percent of registered voters showed up at the polls. But it was an important race nonetheless. Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s our retrospective on the race and whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s at stake.

The shame of the city In February, embattled District Attorney Seth Williams announced he would not seek reelection for a third term. He cited the cloud of distrust that his actions â&#x20AC;&#x201C; for example, not reporting numerous gifts to the ethics watchdogs â&#x20AC;&#x201C; had cast on the ofďŹ ce. In March, the other shoe dropped. Federal authorities handed Williams a 23-count indictment on bribery, extortion and fraud charges, ending fevered speculation about a long-running investigation into the DAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ nances. Williamsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; indictment undoubtedly helped shape the campaign season for his potential replacements, with an emphasis on reforming the ofďŹ ce rather than prosecuting criminals.

A notable list of national figures and celebrities also weighed in on Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s local race. Gold Star Father and 2016 DNC Speaker Khizr Khan endorsed Joe Khan.

Meanwhile, activists Sean King, Susan Sarandon, and singer John Legend backed Larry Krasner. Do these endorsements matter? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to tell, but our next district attorney certainly wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t affect Sarandon the way he or she will affect everyday citizens.

Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s to hoping we cared a little bit more this time around.

Reform rules everything around me The term â&#x20AC;&#x153;progressiveâ&#x20AC;? became one of the deďŹ ning features of the campaign season. Nearly all seven Democratic candidates championed themselves as a progressive in one way or another, and some forums even became a debate about whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;the most progressive.â&#x20AC;? Some of this was healthy. For example, nearly all of the candidates pledged they would not accept gifts as district attorney. But after so much emphasis on left-leaning policy points, some voters turned critical about the lack of attention to victims of crimes and how the DAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ce would be an advocate for them and their families through prosecution.

Outside inďŹ&#x201A;uencers Building a Better Pennsylvania, a super PAC linked to Local 98 electricians union boss Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x153;Johnny Docâ&#x20AC;?Dougherty, put money and support behind Jack Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Neill â&#x20AC;&#x201C; as did eight other building trades unions.â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an Irish thing,â&#x20AC;?one person said of the allegiance. But it also very much highlights the importance of the office to the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unions. The unionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shadow role in the race raised some questions.

After all, Doughertyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s influence in the DAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office has been well-documented. Williams punted a case in which a nonunion worker alleged Dougherty had assaulted him, and the feds are now investigating Local 98â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s payments to summer camps for Williamsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; daughters. For his part, Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Neill pledged to his backers that he would implement a union liaison position within the office.

Courting the wards

Big money

The race also highlighted the often invisible power of Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ward system in local elections. Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Democratic committee did not endorse a candidate for DA, leaving it up to the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 66 wards to make their own individual endorsements at polling places on election day. As Philly Weekly reported, these endorsements were all over the place. Even the self-proclaimedâ&#x20AC;&#x153;progressiveâ&#x20AC;?wards in the city were split.

Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Neill wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the only one with outside aid.

After months of fevered speculation, the HungarianAmerican billionaire George Soros came out with a checkbook in support of Larry Krasner. Soros dumped more than $1.5 million in the Philadelphia Justice & Safety PAC, which spent it on television ads and mail campaigns for Krasner. Meanwhile, Khan and Untermeyer independently raised a nice chunk of change to spend on their own advertising.

When the final numbers are in, millions and millions of dollars will have been spent in choosing Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s next DA.

Within weeks of Williamsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; indictment, the field grew to seven Democratic candidates: former defense attorney and Williamsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; first deputy district attorney Tariq El-Shabazz; Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s former managing director Rich Negrin; Judge Teresa Carr Deni; a young assistant district attorney named Jack Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Neill; prosecutor Joe Khan; civil rights attorney Larry Krasner; and former attorney and real estate broker Michael Untermeyer. Already overwhelmed with names? Now try remembering their policy differences and whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s backing whom. Some candidates tried other methods to distinguish themselves from the pack, and some even had outside help.

he $20 billion industry that is Jersey Shore tourism looks to see a sizeable bump this summer â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and an even bigger one in 2018.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what hospitality experts professed at a recent event called the Jersey Shorecast, a panel gathering for tourism industry insiders and academics to assess the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s business outlook for the upcoming seasons.

Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the running theory: A stable stock market means visitors will feel conďŹ dent in spending more money. If the market remains strong, business will boom.

The other element? Weather. Sunny days on the majority of summer weekends â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the Jersey Shore canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t thrive without them. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As a panelist at the Shorecast, I also feel bullish about 2017,â&#x20AC;? Roughly half of those dollars are spent on the Jersey Shore, according to Rummy Pandit, LIGHTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s executive director who moderated the panel.

Some city tourism ofďŹ cials say occupancy rates for the peak summer months are already near full. Hotels may be looking to capitalize on the momentum from last year, especially in convention-heavy areas such as Atlantic City. In 2016, the city used around 400,000 rooms to host a million visitors, according to Gary Musich, vice president of convention sales at Meet AC â&#x20AC;&#x201D; nearly doubling the number of hotel rooms from 2015.

Beyond the national economic climate, there may be other reasons behind the uptick in interest in some coastal towns: the diversiďŹ cation of businesses. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just casinos and sleepy beach towns anymore.

Some towns are expanding their tourism portfolios. In Cape May County, the

Jersey Shore tourism accounts for 517,000 jobs and comes in as the sixth largest employer in the state. busy season has been extending into the fall with the growth of â&#x20AC;&#x153;eco-agroâ&#x20AC;? tourism, which includes visits to wineries, breweries and farm-to-table restaurants.

Others are getting boosts from national press. Long Beach Island was recently named one of the top beaches in country.

In Ocean County, her organization recently did some targeted promotion for â&#x20AC;&#x153;a wedding road showâ&#x20AC;? that catered to a younger crowd.

Even with new attractions, the Jersey Shoreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s casino industry still plays a big role in the areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economic health.

Brian Tyrrell, professor of Hospitality and Tourism Management Studies at Stockton University, said the Atlantic City casino industry is approaching a size more ďŹ tting to survival. Thanks to the shuttering of ďŹ ve casinos, the remaining ones are able to retain more business.

Plus, the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hotel tax receipts are up 2.8 percent â&#x20AC;&#x201D; even with the closure of 2,000-room casinos such as Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Taj Mahal. Musich noted headlining casinos Harrahâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, the Borgata and Resorts have expanded their conference facilities to the point that Atlantic Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s convention capacity is â&#x20AC;&#x153;now as big as a city like Baltimore.â&#x20AC;? Musich said this could mean an additional 1.5 million people coming to Atlantic City for convention-related events.

Panelists at the Jersey Shorecast also mentioned new corporate investment.

There are plans to open a Hard Rock casino in the former Taj Mahal. Another investor is talking about expanding Showboatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hotel offerings and reopening the former Revel casino as TEN. Developers are also going to break ground on the Stockton Aviation Research and Technology Park in Egg Harbor Township, which could become a hub for high-paying tech jobs to the area, which in turn would help draw more local tourism capital.

As the sixth-largest employer in the state â&#x20AC;&#x201D; thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 517,000 jobs â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tourism sector needs all the love it can get.

Gov. Chris Christie, who cannot run for re-election, will leave ofďŹ ce in 2018. Jake Buganski, acting executive director of the N.J. Division of Travel & Tourism, said he plans to pitch the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s next governor to expand the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s $9 million cap on tourism promotional spending.

The United Artists Riverview Plaza This is probably the theater I go to the most. It hosts all of the latest big-budget ďŹ lms, as well as a bunch of regular special screenings that include operas from New Yorkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Metropolitan Opera, throwback screenings of old movies and budget-friendly kidsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; series. And thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s free parking across the street, yâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;all.

Pro tip: get a Regal Rewards card for freebies on concessions and tickets â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and skip the lines in favor of using one of its convenient kiosks.

But summer hope springs eternal, and film critic Daniel Barnes managed to find 10 highly anticipated films that might just make for the bestâ&#x20AC;¦summerâ&#x20AC;¦ever.

Dunkirk (July 21) Christopher Nolan is practically the only auteur permitted to make money-is-no-object, off-brand blockbusters anymore. That sucks, if only because Nolan seems inclined to make the sort of movies an important director is supposed to make (pretentious space epics and bloated WWII anything) rather than following his Memento muse. Still, this story of the Allied evacuation is probably our best chance for non-superhero-related IMAX awesomeness this summer.

Wonder Woman (June 2) Finally! A female superhero movie helmed by a female directorâ&#x20AC;¦was that really so difficult?

Beyond checking off overdue boxes and rubbing Marvelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nose in it, Wonder Woman could break out of the comic book bubble of bland mediocrity, if only because the character is more identified with bravery and sincerity than with wisecracking smugness or goth mopey-ness. It helps the demigoddess warrior princess is played by real-life demigoddess warrior princess Gal Gadot.

Atomic Blonde (July 28) A longtime stunt coordinator and one of the creative forces behind John Wick, David Leitch officially steps behind the camera with Atomic Blonde, starring Charlize Theron as an undercover agent kick-punching her way through a buffet line of Cold War-era stooges. Leitch has Deadpool 2 lined up for next year, so hopefully we get one decent genre film out of him before that abomination kills us all.

It Comes at Night (June 9) Nobody watched Trey Edward Shultsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; brilliant debut film Krisha, but apparently the right nobodies watched it, because it won the 28 -year-old director a two-picture deal with highly respected indie outlet A24. This follow-up is a horror movie, and after seeing Shults turn a Thanksgiving family dinner into hell on earth, it will be fascinating to watch him plant two feet in the genre.

Detroit (Aug. 4) Kathryn Bigelow reteams with The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty screenwriter Mark Boal for her first film in five years, a visceral ensemble piece about the 1967 Detroit riots featuring John Boyega, Anthony Mackie and John Krasinski.

Sparked by racial injustice and inflamed by police brutality, the riots seem like the sort of historical event tailor-made for Bigelowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s brand of compellingly problematic cinema.

Baby Driver (June 28) After a number of aborted projects, including a famously failed attempt to make Ant-Man, Edgar Wright finally delivers his first film since 2013â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s The Worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s End. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll take anything we can get from the maniacally creative Wright at this point, even if this romantic action musical looks like the sort of film that talented directors make when they have no idea what to make.

The Beguiled (June 30) Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not usually stoked about remakes, especially a remake of a good film like Don Siegelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kinky 1971 drama The Beguiled, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m very curious to see a female take on this somewhat misogynist material. It will also be interesting to see if Coppola can snap out of her funk and invest the film with some of the old Lost in Translation spark.

A Ghost Story (July 7) David Lowery provided one of the last summerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pleasant surprises with Peteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Dragon, a 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

Wind River (Aug. 4) This is the second directorial effort from Taylor Sheridan, but the barely released 2011 genre film Vile was made before he became Wunderkind Screenwriter Taylor Sheridan, the Oscar-nominated scribe behind Sicario and Hell or High Water. Now there are legitimate expectations for this low-key mystery about a murder on a Native American reservation.

After a swing and a miss last spring, Aqimero is hoping to knock it out the park with its latest menu.

Admittedly, it kind of had

to be.

When the project ďŹ rst launched last spring it didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t leave the best impression on the city. The menu, a Latin-Asian fusion left many critics scratching their heads as conceptually it rang very dated, and in a city with a thriving community of Mexican restaurants it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t offering anything that rang particularly authentic or interesting.

Reviews that followed â&#x20AC;&#x201C; literally zero â&#x20AC;&#x153;bellsâ&#x20AC;? from noted Inquirer critic Craig LaBan and zero stars from Philly Mag â&#x20AC;&#x201C; everyone seemed to agree that the Philadelphia dining scene had way better options for tourists; and honestly, it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a draw for locals either.

Now, there is a lot to experience at Aqimero, from casual bites at the bar, to power lunches, to happy hour, brunch, dinner â&#x20AC;&#x201C; thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a menu for every occasion. The new version still revolves around the wood burning grill, and a few Latin elements remain in the food but they have been toned down for the most part, while a few Japanese nods also linger with sushi rolls featured on the lunch menu.

Overall, the new menu feels more American with straightforward offerings that would satisfy palates of all calibers.

On the main dinner menu, shared

appetizers ($10-$17) include a smoked swordďŹ sh dip, guacamole, meat and cheese board, and corn bread with trufďŹ&#x201A;e butter. There is also a great selection of ceviches, raw oysters, and a seafood tower that serves 2-4 people ($14-$95).

If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking for a psuedosteakhouse experience you can order an 8-ounce ďŹ let mignon, 16 ounce pork chop, 14 ounce ribeye and a 10 ounce skirt steak prepared in the aforementioned wood burning grill. Grilled seafood options include shrimp, King PaciďŹ c Salmon, an 8-ounce catch of the day and whole Maine lobster; with prices ranging from $28-$38.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an extensive social plates sharing section on the dinner menu with prices ranging from $12-$19.

Standouts include, sticky ribs (glazed pork ribs, tamarind caramel blistered shishito peppers, crushed peanut brittle), mussels, cauliďŹ&#x201A;ower steak (lime crema fresco, tempura pickled mushrooms), and grilled melon (compressed cantaloupes, Serrano ham, bleu cheese, candied walnuts and peach white balsamic vinegar).

On the chef specialities portion,

prices range from $28-$43 and portions are generous.

Whole Pennsylvania Brook Trout is prepared with a nice crispy skin, and accompanied by asparagus, mushrooms, honey roasted eggplant and spicy pumpkin seeds. The 36-hour sous vide short ribs were amazingly tender and delicious and hunks of meat are accompanied by roasted carrots and mashed potatoes.

Aqimero has also debuted a Power Lunch menu where for $25, you get a 3-course meal with the option to get it to go. For the ďŹ rst course, options include Caesar salad, sushi rolls, grilled melon, and cauliďŹ&#x201A;ower steak. Wood grilled burger, chicken sandwich, tacos, ďŹ&#x201A;atbread or catch of day are on offer for the main, and coffee, tea and a dessert treat for the last course. This is deďŹ nitely for the expense account business set who might want a change of scenery from the Union League or the Pyramid Club.

Desserts of note include the Chocolate Sphere (chocolate cremeux, mandarin, brownie crumbles, bourbon ice cream) and the perfect hot day treat, Strawberry Ginger Ice (grilled apricot, plum, pickled rhubarb, chamomile).

On the drinks end, for happy hour the beer selection is nothing to write home about, 3 local breweries are featured but the selections are pretty basic, Sly Fox 113 IPA, Yards Saison and Yuengling. This astoundingly small selection of beers in a city noted for its craft beer scene is puzzling to say the least. Happy Hour cocktails take on Latin vibe with Caipirinha, Paloma, Margarita and Mojito on deck, with one fusion offering, Sake Sangria and they go for $7 each.

Cocktails on their regular drink menu range from $12-18, they favor Latin spirits, many featuring Mezcal, Tequila and Cachaça. Large Format cocktails served in beautiful glass vessels and garnished with ďŹ&#x201A;owers and fruit are also a new feature, at $150 and intending to serve groups of three or more.

To successfully get locals to dine in a hotel restaurant in Philadelphia can be a challenge in terms of offerings and price point, outside of special occasions theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not places that ďŹ rst come to mind to try out. Plus the space in which Aqimero resides just makes you feel like youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re dining in a hotel lobby that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have much personality.

When I think about the traveler who stays at the RitzCarlton, someone who is not that familiar with our city and is trying to get their bearings, not feeling up to trying to navigate unfamiliar streets and ďŹ nding a suitable dining option, of perhaps being trapped all day in meetings at a conference and needing an easily accessible dining option after a long day, would this restaurant satisfy their needs? Yes, absolutely. They would more than enjoy the selections on offer.

Will locals go here? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to say. The dining scene in Philadelphia grows more crowded and more competitive by the month, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot of good stuff to experience, and starting this year weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got our own homegrown James Beard award winners (Michael Solomonov of Zahav, and Greg Vernick of Vernick) within our midst so, tourists too have more options to choose from if theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re inclined to explore. Leonard Cohen will be honored May 18 by some of Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most talented Jewish perfomers.

Young, gifted and Jewish Leonard Cohen homage at Gershman Y plans to feature the finest in Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hipster Jewish rocker and poet scene

wo things during winter 2016 were something of a gamechanger when it came to young Jewish Philadelphia. On the saddest note, literary pop and poetryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ nest son, Leonard Cohen â&#x20AC;&#x201C; an inďŹ&#x201A;uence to the likes of Nick Cave and Lorde â&#x20AC;&#x201C; passed away in November after releasing one of his most cuttingly mournful works, You Want it Darker, an album which famously included elements of the Hebrew High Holy Days prayer â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hineniâ&#x20AC;? which itself yearns for mercy.

For any local writer or lyricist (Jewish or otherwise) worth his or her salt, this was a devastating loss, but celebratory as Cohenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sullen, sensual spirit lives on. Weeks later, Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Gershman Y â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the longtime community center to the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Jewish population â&#x20AC;&#x201C; played host in December to a 50th anniversary of the Andy Warhol and Velvet Underground visit to the (then) Jewish Y, only this time with contemporary Lou Reed acolytes Yo La Tengo and Dean & Britta taking the stage.

This week, Gershman Y continues its reach into youthful marketing with an 0$<

evening dedicated to Cohen, ďŹ rst with Ladies and Gentlemanâ&#x20AC;ŚMr. Leonard Cohen (a screening acting as part of the Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival). Following the ďŹ lm, there are readings from spoken word artists the Philly Pigeon, Sarah Bloom, Otter Jung-Allen and Nathalie Anderson, along with music from locals TJ Kong & the Atomic Bomb, Sharon Sable and MINKAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Dick Rubin â&#x20AC;&#x201C; all performing Cohen material.

Philly Pigeon co-founder Jacob Winterstein recalls listening to Cohenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s music with his father (â&#x20AC;&#x153;my dad loves Leonard Cohen and used to listen to him on cassettes during long car ridesâ&#x20AC;?) and connects the poet/lyricist to his own sense of Jewish identity. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Judaism gave me my ďŹ rst formal framework for thinking about social justice,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I appreciate that Cohen attempted to think about themes of justice in his work.â&#x20AC;?

For the May 18 event, Winterstein will perform spoken word interpretations of Cohenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own poems, such as â&#x20AC;&#x153;What Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m Doing Hereâ&#x20AC;? from his Spice-Box of Earth collection, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Partisanâ&#x20AC;? from Songs from a Room and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Beneath My Hands.â&#x20AC;?

Winterstein furthers his take on Cohen by saying, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am practicing the poems out loud, now, and trying to ďŹ t my cadence to his writing.â&#x20AC;?

Dan Bruskewicz from TJ Kong says that he has been listening to Cohen since high school, a sober, pre-weed-head, teen-hood previously ďŹ lled with the â&#x20AC;&#x153;loud and angry music and Boyz 2 Men and Mariah Carey,â&#x20AC;? into which LC broke down doors. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cohen had an entirely different kind of power; not revolutionary or counter cultural speciďŹ cally but inspiring to the young me, especially in regard to the power and individuality of vocal performance,â&#x20AC;? says Bruskewicz.

Rubin calls it â&#x20AC;&#x153;good naches to see a fellow tribesmanâ&#x20AC;? such as Cohen celebrated for his musical accomplishments, and that in Rubinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s youth in Hebrew school, the Rabbi always told him about the forefathers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Abraham, Isaac, and Leonard. We listened to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Hallelujahâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; on loop as we learned about the exploits of King David.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a deep humility in Cohenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s songs.

He acknowledges sin as a reality of life, and yet strives to be a better man. Faith ďŹ&#x201A;ows from acceptance of his own nature.

ariq Trotter has come a long way since he teamed with high school pal Ahmir â&#x20AC;&#x153;Questloveâ&#x20AC;? Thompson in the halls of Performing Arts High School in 1987. They spent summers ripping up street corners, open mics and talent shows with a sound that ultimately formed what is today the six-man contingent known as the Legendary Roots Crew.

Hip-hop pioneers who made a name for themselves and the city with every dope ass melody, lyric and beat theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever created. This year, The Roots and Trotter, known affectionately as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Black Thought,â&#x20AC;? will return to Philly for the 10th anniversary of its daylong festival, the Roots Picnic, situated on the banks of the Delaware River.

Bringing with it a caravan of blockbuster performers, icons and a few upand-comers, PW caught up with Trotter

to discuss summer in Philly, his personal roots (pun intended) and the Roots Picnic role as Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unofďŹ cial (ofďŹ cial) summer launch party.

Summer in Philly, Tariq. Go. Oh man, summer is when we put on, so to speak. In Philly, we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t necessarily hibernate during the winter, but the winter months thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kind of when we stack and save and plan and prepare. And once the weather breaks? Yeah, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s when we like to show out a little bit. Philadelphians, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re kind of reserved in the sense that we are super cool, we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really do too much. Some of the stand up comedy that I do [Editorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s note: In February, Trotter presented â&#x20AC;&#x153;Delirious,â&#x20AC;? a comedy showcase series at Punch Line Philly in Fishtown] talks about just how super, super cool everyone in Philly is.

That being said, we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t drop our cool just in the summer, but it is when we like to peacock â&#x20AC;&#x201C; if you will â&#x20AC;&#x201C; just a little

bit more. People tend to keep their cars cleaner and their sneakers cleaner. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re gonna hear all cars drive by bumping music in the streets, the block parties, the cookouts, family reunions; people open up the hydrants on the block, [that] all happens come summer. Summer in Philadelphia is soulful and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re just excited that every year we can be a little piece of that.

Chat the evolution of The Roots Picnic, now 10 years in the making.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s deďŹ nitely an honor and I feel very blessed to have the Festival evolve into what it is. There are so many festivals that are short lived, so the fact this is something that we built from the ground up and has become a brand, something that people look forward to, something that brings revenue to the city. Shines a light on the city of Philadelphia annually for so many consecutive years, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a blessing.

If you look at our ďŹ rst real album cover artwork aside from â&#x20AC;&#x153;Organix,â&#x20AC;? which was essentially our demo, our ďŹ rst record â&#x20AC;&#x153;Do You Want More?â&#x20AC;? we are basically standing where we have the Roots Picnic.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just an honor that all of that has come full circle.

As the popularity of The Roots Crew grows so does your status of being the 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

preeminent hip-hop representative for the city of Philadelphia. Pressure?

I feel like because of the rich musical history and the rich history of the arts in the city of Philadelphia, to be in a position to act as ambassadors for as long as we have, is something that we take super seriously. We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take it for granted.

We completely understand that when were are out in the world doing what we do in the further reaches of the galaxy...when weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re out traveling and doing shows, we represent an introduction to Philadelphia and what Philadelphians [to a lot of people]. Just how rich our art history is and our art education is, yeah, I feel like we represent all of that. For some people as it regards to Philly, we are all they know about the city. And after that introduction, we hope that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll want to dive into it [and learn more]. So yeah, no doubt itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something I feel is an honor that we take super seriously.

Whenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the last time you had an opportunity to give Philly a shout out on a large scale?

We were just honored on [May 8] at the prestigious Third Street Music School in New York City, where one of the newer members of The Roots, Dave Guy, learned to play trumpet there, so we were honored by Steve Higgins the announcer of the Tonight Show and this is a school that is 100-plus years-old and is a New York institution, but the very ďŹ rst thing we did when [famed drummer] Questlove and I took the stage to receive our award was we gave a throwback and a shout out to the institutions in Philadelphia from which we came. We also give props to the High School for the Greater and Performing Arts and Settlement Music School and [Samuel S.] Fleischer Arts Memorial, the institutions that we are a product of.

With your work schedule and being the house band of the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, how often do you even get a chance to come back to Philadelphia to get some down time, if down time is actually a thing for The Roots?

[Laughs] I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really get much down time in Philly, but you actually caught me right now; Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m actually on the Turnpike driving back to New York City from Philly. Currently, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m actually in Philly almost every morning. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m training at a gym in Philly four mornings out of the week, I get my haircut in Philly still, so Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m actually there a lot, but I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

consider any of it as actual downtime. I went and trained this morning and then I went and had breakfast at the Trolley Car Diner up in Chestnut Hill and now Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m back on the road driving through New Jersey so I can make my way up for [the taping of] The Tonight Show.

So you drive 90 miles pretty much every day just to get a cut and hit the gym?

Yes sir. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know where else Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d go to be honest.

Where do you get your fade, Tariq?

I see two barbers. One which is in South Philly and the other actually [inside] Sherman Mills in East Falls. Both of which take great care of me.

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s it mean to be a Philadelphian?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a resilience we have that I really havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seen anywhere else. You know, [Frank Sinatra famously said] about New York that â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; and I believe that deďŹ nitely rings true; but for me it rings even more true about Philly.

Philly is one of the toughest audiences to do anything in front of. Ask an athlete, ask a musician, ask a comedian, ask a teacher that has to teach a group of kids from Philadelphia; [Laughs], itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not easy, man. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a no-nonsense, no BS just straight up, keep it 100 type of crowd. So with all that being said, if you can come up in all that and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re able to survive and thrive in Philly and you go outside of the city to anywhere on Earth to [get your hustle on] and you apply that Philly hustle? Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re bound to succeed, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re bound to win.

I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see many people from Philly leave the city and seriously go out to try and make it and fail. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m deďŹ nitely proud to be a Philadelphian. My kids werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t born in Philly, but I tell them theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re from Philly. They may try to argue [that point with me] but if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re my child, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re from Philly. The same can be said for The Roots. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a Philadelphia band there are people [currently in the crew] from Texas and Jamaica and New York and points near and far; weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re kind of a motley crew of musicians but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m always going to introduce our band as â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Legendary Roots Crewâ&#x20AC;? from Philadelphia, Pa., thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s understood if you work with us and something that you roll with and acceptâ&#x20AC;Ś [chuckles]...or getting rolled over. he last time someone began to refurbish the former Rosewood Caterers in Upper Holmesburg, hundreds of neighbors showed up at an April 2016 community meeting to prevent the venue from becoming a swingers nightclub known as Saints and Sinners.

And the commissioner of Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Department of Licenses and Inspection vowed the city would not issue a building permit for a sex-oriented business there.

But three weeks ago, the city issued a building permit for the former Rosewood at 8832 Frankford Ave., a location surrounded by a shopping center and homes. The paperwork indicates the owner, longtime pornography purveyor and property developer Tom Sherwood, intends to operate a catering hall there.

But neighbors are still wary about the type of parties Sherwood plans to host. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If the guy wants to open up a caterer, more power to him. But if he thinks heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to blow smoke up our butts, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s got another thing com 0$<

City Councilman Bobby Henon stated in a May 8 Facebook post that he is backing the neighbors in ďŹ ghting the construction permit. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My ofďŹ ce is actively working with the community to appeal the issuance of the permit to Saints and Sinners. We will keep you posted on any updates,â&#x20AC;? Henon wrote.

The civic group plans to discuss the topic at its monthly meeting on May 18 at St. Dominicâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Marian Hall, 8532 Frankford Ave. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. and is open to the public.

hen you think of places to be this summer, Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parks probably donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t crack your top

10 list.

But this city boasts 10,200 acres east to west â&#x20AC;&#x201D; from the crown jewel of Fairmount Park to smaller green escapes nestled among residential blocks â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and the city is still trying to get people to discover all the stuff that goes on here.

A number of parks events still havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been announced, so keep your eye on notices at your local community centers.

Parks and Recreation wants you to know about the events theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re putting together. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We use every avenue available to us to promote our programs, from the grassroots community level with friends groups to paid advertising and social media,â&#x20AC;?

Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s traveling beer garden Chances are youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re familiar with your neighborhoodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beer garden options this season. But the pop-up scene is expanding (in a good way). Parks on Tap â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a partnership with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, Fairmount Park Conservancy and FCM Hospitality â&#x20AC;&#x201D; is in its second season as Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;ďŹ rst and only traveling beer garden.â&#x20AC;? This year will be bigger than ever, with 20 parks across 20 weeks, which kicks off on May 17 at The

Azalea Garden and will run through Oct. 1.

FringeA-Thon As the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s home for contemporary performance, this annual outdoor, 12-hour dance party-marathon is a fundraiser for FringeArts. Participants are invited to raise money then dance their â&#x20AC;&#x153;artâ&#x20AC;? until their feet fall off â&#x20AC;&#x201C; not literally, ďŹ guratively, of course. It invites people to create a team and recruit dancers to fundraise for their artistic cause of choice. People can bring ďŹ&#x201A;iers to share with fellow dancers, wear costumes that promote their brand, and naturally, dance with fellow potential supporters and patrons. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a 75% split of all proceeds raised by teams to support the culture sector of the city. Prizes and special recognition will be awarded for the most creative promotional endeavor, as well the top fundraising team. With six DJs spinning tunes through the day and the famous Bearded Ladies Cabaret founder John Jarboe emceeing, the party is as much about dancing as it is about the fundraising.

Even professional dancers will be working the room, teaching moves to everybody in attendance. So cut the rug, bring your dancing shoes and bust a move as the event will culminate in a specially taught choreographed dance number for everyone to take part in. Talking dirty Fourth annual SEXx event takes a look at sexuality in the current state of American politics

Feminista Jones will emcee the fourth annual SEXx event entitled SEXx: Sex as Resistance happening at the William Way LGBT Center and Center City bar Franky Bradleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s.

hen Wilhelm Reich moved from fascist Europe to America in the 1930s, he brought with him the idea that sexual freedom is the core of all liberation. Reich actually coined the term â&#x20AC;&#x153;sexual revolutionâ&#x20AC;? and said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;freedom without sexual self-determination is in itself a contradiction.â&#x20AC;?

He made the case that fascists are able to control populations not just because of overt acts of force, but by infesting our minds â&#x20AC;&#x201C; through sexual guilt. If we internalize sexual shame, it affects how we think about ourselves and determines what we do with our bodies, as well as how we treat others. If someone can control that, he argued, there really isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t anything they canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t control.

Legislation today, as either passed law or on the table to become law, continues to make it harder to be a woman or a sexual minority â&#x20AC;&#x201C; curtailing access to education and health care and allowing religion to be used an excuse for old-fashioned slut-shaming and homophobic bigotry. Those hurt the most are already the most marginalized, people of color, the disabled and lowincome earners.

Sex negativism is the idea that sex is only acceptable under very speciďŹ c conditions, and only truthfully for procreation within a legally recognized marriage.

And the idea at its headâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;scratching core?

That the pursuit of pleasure is a vice, only certain people are allowed to be sexual, and all deviations deserve to be punished.

The event is divided into two segments: a

series of TEDx style talks about sexuality and a slate of live performances. The content ranges from professional and academic to the deeply personal. The TEDx portion will be emceed by nationally renowned activist and author Feminista Jones, with the event as a whole aiming to focus on sexualityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s power for political liberation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s incredibly important that we continue to have open, radical conversations about sex and sexuality, particularly during a period of great movement and change,â&#x20AC;? says Jones. â&#x20AC;&#x153;SEXx creates a space for people to come together and engage in these necessary discussions and experiences.â&#x20AC;?

Topics will include relationship anarchy, the rarely discussed orientation of asexuality, giving voice to survivors of sexual trauma, and how the ideas of gender and health are invented constructs. The live performances will range from drag kings and queens to poets and singers.

This author is one of the co-founders of SEXx, along with Elicia Gonzales. According to those who study authoritarianism, sex negativism is essential to maintaining power. An â&#x20AC;&#x153;exaggerated concern for proper sexual conductâ&#x20AC;? is a feature of fascist regimes seen over history and across the world. Meanwhile, sexual freedom is key to liberation movements: releasing women from the tyranny of endless pregnancies, decriminalizing interracial relationships, depathologizing same-sex attractions, kicking government out of private relationships, and asserting that each person has full bodily autonomy.

Bottom line: Being the ďŹ nal authority on your own sexuality is part of deconstructing sexism, racism, homophobia, classism, and other forms of oppression. Expressing sexuality that is outside the socially acceptable bounds is an act of resistance.
