"THE BIG PICTURE" Have you noticed that the scenic section of I-676 that runs through Center City has been tarnished with signs pointing to New York? Yep, overhead signs that previously read Trenton/Chester now show the direction to the Big Apple via our highway. It appears Trenton makes, but in this case New York takes and Philly has to be the bearer of the news. Sorry, Trenton. Q

35-44 While the overdose crisis hits all age brackets, people in the 35-44 range became the most at-risk group last year, seeing a 65 percent increase in opioid-related overdose fatalities. Q

Philadelphia Department of Health Medical Examiner’s OfďŹ ce has released its annual report on the opioid overdose crisis in Philadelphia – and the data conďŹ rms much of what we already expected. Things are getting worse. The body count for unintentional fatal drug overdose deaths climbed to a staggering 1,217 last year, up from 907 the year before. Health ofďŹ cials attribute the 34 percent increase in fatalities to a number of causes – but the main culprit is fentanyl. Q

HOW TO: save a life with naloxone – Take a naloxone training course (they’re free and you can find one open to the public every month) – Purchase naloxone (available in most pharmacies in Pennsylvania) and carry it with you at all times – Encourage loved ones who are in addiction to never use opioids alone or without someone present who has naloxone – As always, educate yourself on opioid treatment options and be ready to make referrals to loved ones who are ready to seek help 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

Perhaps the most devastating figure from the Public Health report is that medical examiners found fentanyl in 846 of the 1,217 fatal ODs last year – a devastating 95 percent increase over the previous year. The deadly synthetic drug was found in 84 percent of opioid-related overdose deaths in 2017, compared to just 57 percent in 2016. The Medical Examiner’s Office added that other deaths from other opioids (heroin, pharmaceutical painkillers) also increased last year. Q

Latinos at risk

While often portrayed for its impact on predominantly white populations, the overdose crisis is increasingly ravaging minority communities at alarming rate – and Philly is no exception. Latinos saw the largest increase in opioid-related overdose deaths in 2017 – a 60 percent spike over the previous year, as compared to nonHispanic whites who saw a 47 percent spike, and non-Hispanic blacks at 34 percent. Q

Overdoses aren’t all happening in one place

As most of our readers know already, the overwhelming majority of overdoses occur in the Port Richmond-Kensington-Fairhill triangle. But fatal hotspots have sprung up in South, Northeast and West Philadelphia. Thanks to the increasing proliferation of naloxone, public overdoses are more likely than ever to be reversed. More concerning, according to the new Medical Examiner’s report, is that 75 percent of fatal overdoses are happening inside homes and other residences throughout the city. Philly –> Austin Homegrown space-rockers Ruby The Hatchet get trippy on the road to Levitation Festival BY SARAH ROSE ETTER

A

ustin is a city in the middle of a growth spurt that’s similar to Philadelphia’s. Among the bars and coffee shops built out of weak wood, surrounded by overgrown lawns, marked by twinkling, rusting vintage signs, a new afuence has crept into the Texas capital. Luxury condos are ďŹ lling out the skyline – monuments of massive wealth that now rub shoulders with the city’s grit, its artists and its musicians. It’s a struggle for a town that’s been known for its oddness. Frequent festivals – from SXSW to Austin City Limits – offer an inux of revenue for businesses. But the area’s penchant for locals holds strong. Outsiders can expect a sneer or two: Picture a native Philadelphian greeting a newly relocated New in Fishtown. Yorker 0$<

Among the rapid change, another festival is occuring. Levitation Festival, founded in 2008 as Austin PsychFest, offers four days of music spread across some of Austin’s favorite bars and venues. I jokingly describe the festival as a Goth Coachella because the bands are strange, dark, raw – in one night, you could theoretically catch Chelsea Wolfe, Ministry, Ty Segall, The Make Up, and Thee Oh Sees if you had the right wristband and enough cocaine. Today, I’m at Volcom Garden, a hybrid spot that’s half art gallery and half music venue with a half-pipe where I watch a few middle-aged men attempt skate tricks in the weakening Texas sun. On the stage, Philadelphia-based Ruby The Hatchet are running lines for soundcheck. Behind me, ride-sharing app Lyft has set up a hot pink 70s-style van next to a photobooth and is inviting people to climb in to snap pic-

tures. The reward: A free pair of hot pink Lyft rip-off Ray Bans. The scene at Volcom hints at what Austin – and much of the country – is facing: How does fringe art maintain its value once capitalism edges in? From the stage, Jillian Taylor, the band’s front woman, lets out a velvety howl to test her mic. The ďŹ ve-piece band, established in New Jersey in 2011, is known for its psychedelic ‘70s rock vibe. But where another band might attempt to approach that style and come off like a gimmick, Ruby The Hatchet manages to toe the line perfectly. It’s reminiscent of a bygone time, but not enough to sound unoriginal. Part of that is due to the band’s insistence on melody, and another part of that is due to Taylor’s notorious swagger on stage. “Did you catch this band last night?â€? a bearded man next to me asks. He’s wearing mirrored aviators. “No, I couldn’t get on the list,â€? I say. It’s true – press spots at Levitation are guarded like Pentagon secrets. “They’re so good. She’s like a female Mick Jagger,â€? he says. “I had to see them again.â€? A few minutes later, in a small garden next to the stage, I catch up with the band. I was meant to interview them a day earlier, but their van broke down in the middle of the Arizona desert en route to Austin. “We had to pretend to be married to buy a new one,â€? Taylor tells me, pointing at bassist Mike Parise. “We had to fake that marriage, give them $1,000, sign some paperwork, then we left in a van we couldn’t afford. It’s a nice van, but we call it a forced upgrade.â€? The band tours – and faces van troubles – so frequently, I have to ask them how they keep going, particularly with this last spell of bad luck. “It was a really dangerous breakdown,â€? Taylor admits. “It was 4am in the middle of the desert. Eighteen wheelers were rushing by and rattling the van. We barely had cell service. But nobody lost their cool. We just thought: ‘OK, how do we get through this?’ And that’s what the road teaches you. Freaking out isn’t going to get you off the highway, but dividing and conquering will. So one person looked up a mechanic, someone else looked up a hotel, someone else looked up a van dealer. And that’s what works, every single time.â€? This is another dynamic that jumps out at you about Ruby – they actually seem to like each other. Most of the band lives together in a house down the highway from Philadelphia next to a dog kennel. The collaborative nature of their living situation carries over into their songwriting. “It’s an interesting process for sure,â€? says guitarist Johnny Scarps. “We come up with some guitar parts, hash out some structures, then everybody weaves their signature in. That’s really the journey of writing a song for us, ďŹ guring out where the heart of it is.â€? “It’s not like it’s one person’s vision,â€?

chimes in Sean Hur, the band’s keyboardist. “Most bands have a lead writer who runs the whole show. But we start with a few little things, then we’re very collaborative.â€? When I ask about how they offer constructive feedback to each other during song writing – particularly given how close they are – they say it doesn’t seem to be an issue. “We all have opinions, but we try out everyone’s ideas before we ultimately agree,â€? explains Taylor. “We barely need to edit, because we just riff on any idea over and over again. Then we start to layer from there.â€? “We’re really friends ďŹ rst and a band second, so that makes it easier,â€? adds Scarps. When I ask how they all got into music, the answers are all over the board. Stewart grew up with drums in his house, and remembers battling with his brother for a chance to pound away. Scarps came to guitar a little later. As for Taylor? “If you asked me what I wanted to do at 3 years old, I would have said I want to be a singer,â€? she says, throwing her hands dramatically in the air. “I’ve always wanted to perform. I’m inspired by a lot of women. I grew up listening to Janis, Stevie, Grace Slick. Now, I’m really into a band from the ‘70s called Babe Ruth.â€? Most recently, Ruby the Hatchet recorded a pair of Pink Floyd covers for a Magnetic Eye tribute, including a longer version of the song “Pigs.â€? They recorded the songs at home, a departure from their most recent studio albums out on Relapse Records. “We really loved how those covers turned out,â€? Taylor says. “The recordings had such a good sound, and we used to do things that way. So we really feel like it’s time to do some more home recordings.â€? It’s interesting that they can show up in Austin and play two nights in a row. When I suggest they must have quite a presence down here, Taylor nods. “Austin is really like our second home. Since we got in, we’ve been spending time with friends. They booked extra shows down here for bands like us that are coming a far distance,â€? she explains. The band still has two more weeks of touring through the South to get through before they’ll see their actual home to continue recording. But their spirits seemed high as they headed to the stage. As the band began to rip through their opening song, the bearded man in aviators put one ďŹ st in the air and nodded his head. Taylor shimmied on stage, mouth wide and howling, as the band pounded away at their instruments behind her. On the Volcom half-pipe, a man took a spill off of his skateboard. As Taylor’s signature vocals saturated the air, the crowd stopped taking photos and began to move away from the pink Lyft van to get a closer look. Maybe some of them were local. The story of the Frankford Yellow Jackets gets told at the Historical Society of Philadelphia.

Philly’s forgotten football team Move over, Eagles. The Frankford Yellow Jackets, Philadelphia’s first NFL franchise team, finally gets their story told.

B

efore the Vince Lombardi trophy made its way down Broad Street, before the “Philly Special was a twinkle in Doug Pederson’s or Nick Foles’ eye, and nearly 100 years before a $177 million league salary cap existed, there were the Frankford Yellow Jackets, Philadelphia’s original NFL franchise, with $5 salaries being the norm. The Historical Society of Frankford, located on a quiet block of Orthodox Street, uses artifacts to tell the story of the team that

0$<

paved the way for the modern-era Philadelphia Eagles. Jim Young, president of the Historical Society of Frankford, detailed the history of the team at a presentation last month. “The general idea is, in 1899, the Frankford Athletic Organization was formed, just a bunch of sandlot teams, basically, Young

said. “They played Holmesburg, and Jefferson Hospital had a team, and they expanded who they were playing and started going up and down the East Coast playing teams.â€? When the NFL formed as the American Professional Football Association in 1920, the Frankford Yellow Jackets didn’t join at ďŹ rst, but played the NFL teams, including those

from Chicago and New York. And, they won, according to Young. “They had a record of .700, playing about 25 games a year,â€? he said. “They played the Green Bay Packers. They played Jim Thorpe. They played against these legends. They competed against quality competition and won.â€? “In 1924, they joined the league and became an NFL franchise,â€? Young added. “They were doing great. Won the championship in 1926. And, then, things went bad. Their stadium burned down in 1928.â€? Before joining the league, the organization built Frankford Stadium on Frankford Avenue that could hold 9,000 people. Based on maps and photographs, the end zone was located where Aramingo Avenue turns into Harbison Avenue today. At the time, Pennsylvania’s Blue Laws banned activities on Sundays due to religious reasons. And those laws were taken seriously: the team couldn’t secure any nearby stadiums for playing time. With the Great Depression looming on the horizon, the team went broke in 1931, according to Young. Bert Bell, who would go on to be the NFL commissioner from 1945 to 1959, and James “Ludâ€? Wray, who was a center for the Yellow Jackets, bought the franchise, paid off its debt and in 1935, changed the name to the Philadelphia Eagles, but retained the yellow and blue colors of the yellow jackets – remember that blowout victory over the Lions in 2007 when the Eagles donned their “throwbackâ€? uniforms? The name was changed to pay homage to President Franklin Roosevelt’s National Recovery Act, its symbol being an eagle. In 1941, the Eagles again found themselves in ďŹ nancial distress, and Art Rooney, the founder of the Pittsburgh Steelers, bought a 70 percent interest in the franchise, with Bell retaining the other 30 percent. During World War II, the Steelers also ran into ďŹ nancial difďŹ culty and briey merged with the Philadelphia Eagles, becoming the Steagles for the 1943 season, until the end of the war when their players returned from the war. Fast forward decades later with Jason Kelce’s “We Don’t Careâ€? attitude on full, colorful display on the Philadelphia Art Museum steps, and it’s hard to imagine anything other than a city that “bleeds green.â€? But, the proof of the past remains. After Young’s presentation, guests were able to view artifacts of the Frankford Yellow Jackets, including team photographs, a team banner, game programs complete with dates and team rosters, an authentic football and a copy of the franchise license. “It’s unbelievable that this happened,â€? Young said. “It really blew my mind that this little township, this little borough, this little neighborhood of Frankford had an NFL franchise. And, they started out as a little sandlot team.â€? Q TWITTER: @PHILLYWEEKLY

The ownership group of the Tropicana Hotel and Casino has invested $200 million to stretch its arms along AC’s strip with the acquisition and renovation of the Chelsea Hotel.

Old dog, new tricks

Tropicana hopes to revive the look, feel and ambience of formerly one of Atlantic City’s swankiest destinations BY KERITH GABRIEL

I

n its heyday, the Chelsea Hotel in Atlantic City was a posh destination that attracted scores of people looking to get away from casino lights but still get that AC feel. But over the years, the hotel on Morris Avenue evolved into a shell of what it once was, with eroding decor and amenities shocking many of those same people hoping for a weekend getaway. In massive need of a renovation, complaints stemmed from the hotel’s dimly lit rooms to old furniture to its tiny, overcrowded front lobby that usually found guests trying to check out snaking outside the front door. Emerging from its own bankruptcy, the ownership group of the Tropicana

The grand opening celebration is expected to ow into Memorial Day Weekend with block party on the Atlantic City Boardwalk, all culminating in a ďŹ reworks celebration on May 26. “The Chelsea Tower is a welcome addition to Tropicana Atlantic City,â€? said Tony Rodio, president and CEO of Tropicana Entertainment. “We

Oh, and a spa. “[Simply put], The new restaurants and pools in The Chelsea Tower provide our guests with more nongaming amenities to enjoy this summer, said Callender. SEX

Silencing the sex industry Two new laws are an egregious form of internet censorship – and will almost certainly put sex workers at risk BY TIMAREE SCHMIT

O

n paper, the Stop Enabling Sex TrafďŹ ckers Act (SESTA) and the Fighting Online Sex TrafďŹ cking Act (FOSTA) are the latest legislative efforts to ďŹ ght the scourge of human trafďŹ cking. Their goals – eradicating slavery and child sexual abuse – are undoubtedly noble. But in practice, the bipartisan bill package represents a dangerous display of ignorance. Clearly, lawmakers failed to get input from those who will be most affected the bills – let alone anyone with knowledge of the internet’s role in the industry of sex work. If they had, they wouldn’t have penned legislation that will ultimately censor the internet, put sex workers in more danger and do virtually nothing to help ďŹ nd people who are being trafďŹ cked. An amendment to the Communications Decency Act section 230, SESTA-FOSTA looks to severely punish anyone who uses the internet to “promote or facilitate the prostitution of another person.â€? The problem lies in this broad language of the bill. Rather than just targeting pimps and trafďŹ ckers, the bill restricts anyone who consensually engages in sex work and all websites they use to communicate for sex work. Repercussions for free speech online are staggering and have already begun: Microsoft has banned the use of “offensive languageâ€? and nudity from Skype, Xbox and other plat-

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

Anna Moone, a local porn performer and cam model, has been speaking out against the newly passed anti-sex work laws. forms, while Google has started searching for and deleting nudity from users’ Drive accounts. On Friday, April 6, the Department of Justice seized the website Backpage, and in March Craiglist preemptively took down its entire Personals section. Reddit banned a number of subreddits about escorts and sugar daddies and tech experts suggest changes could be coming to more social media sites and dating apps. While all internet users will be impacted by this law, those most negatively affected are those it purports to help. SESTA-FOSTA doesn’t make it easier to ďŹ nd trafďŹ cked people or provide them any resources. In fact, the Department of Justice, who opposed the bills, says it’ll actually be harder to locate them. Another population that is already being adversely affected are consensual sex

workers, people who choose to provide erotic services in exchange for money. Some sex workers enjoy the exible hours and relatively good wages, others have simply come to rely on this industry to pay their bills. The idea that most providers are coerced or forced into the industry is a myth that is not supported by research. A recent DOJ study found that not only were juveniles far less likely to be trafďŹ cked than anti-trafďŹ cking lobbyists have suggested, pimps were also far less prevalent. Ironically, because of these laws, many lower income sex workers who have been operating independently online will need to turn to much more dangerous streetbased work and the supposed protection provided by pimps. Local porn performer and cam model

Anna Moone has been engaging in education and activism in response to the laws. “The main way I have personally been affected is through this culture of fear that has arisen,â€? Moone tells Philly Weekly. “Basically every day a new site clamps down on speech or shuts down entirely.â€? She mentions Switter, a weeks-old sex workerfriendly social media platform that has already gathered more than 50,000 users. Cloudare, the initial provider for Switter, has already terminated service in response to SESTA-FOSTA, a law it had lobbied against and continue to decry as dangerous for free speech. “Twitter is the main way for myself and many other sex workers to engage with [our] customer base,â€? Moone add. “I have spent over a year tirelessly carving out a signiďŹ cant following there. The fact that I could lose it at any minute because of SESTA is a sword of Damocles hanging over my head. If Twitter bans sex workers, my career is over, as I will not be able to promote my ďŹ lms or my cam shows.â€? For the anti-sex work lobbyists behind bills like SESTA-FOSTA, this is the real goal: end the sale of sexual services entirely. However, as sex historian Kate Lister points out, no law in human history has ever done that. Instead, she says, efforts to abolish prostitution or curb demand only increase stigma and have regularly led to increased violence against sex workers. Even the so-called Nordic model, which criminalizes clients but not providers, has resulted in more assault and murder of sex workers. Well-meaning would-

be clients might be deterred from seeking services, but those who are intent to harm or exploit a vulnerable population are not – and sex workers who face abuse or theft at the hands of a client are unable to turn to authorities for help, lest they be arrested. Local cam model Rabbit is less alarmed by the new law and takes another angle. In an interview with Philly Weekly, she says the sites on which she works have not been affected. “Cam sites know the language, they know how to get around it. We’ve been doing this a long time.â€? She adds Backpage probably should have been shut down because it provides a false sense of security to providers. “A lot of young girls get into it thinking it’s easy money; but they don’t know what they’re getting into. You can’t really screen clients that way.â€? The only solution to the problem of sex trafďŹ cking, she says, is decriminalization. Sex worker rights activists, academics who study the industry, as well as organizations like Amnesty International, UNAIDS and Human Rights Watch, all agree. Providers in regions that have decriminalized sex work, like New Zealand, Denmark and parts of Australia, are able to refuse questionable clients more easily, and report experiencing fewer assaults and thefts – from both clients and police. They are also able to more easily identify victims of trafďŹ cking and access resources without fear of arrest. If legislators are genuinely interested in combating trafďŹ cking, they need to not only reverse course on this law but move toward a model of decriminalization. Or, at bare minimum, listen to sex workers. Q

SAVAGE LOVE

Quickies DAN SAVAGE I wish I had a better question, but this is all I have: My friends and I were discussing the nuances of a straight orgy (a roughly equal number of male and female participants) versus a gang bang (one woman, many men), and we observed that there is no proper name for a one man, many women situation. The internet tells me it’s just a “reverse gang bang,â€? which is a very disappointing name. Can we please establish a new one? Curious Nonparticipant How does “pussy riotâ€? grab you? And while we’re on the subject of ipping gendered expressions: A number of years ago, I was asked to come up with a female version of “sausage fest.â€? Sticking with the food theme, I proposed “clam bake.â€? Still mystiďŹ ed as to why it didn’t catch on. Married from 28 to 36, single the last three years, and celibate most of the last couple years. The last two years of my marriage were sexless, and I saw professionals until I was priced out. I could probably earn twice what I’m making now if I moved away, but my current job gives me the exibility to spend afternoons with my young kids. Last year, I had a brief relationship (that included the best sex of my life), but I ended it because I needed more me time. So I lack the willingness or the conďŹ dence to be in a relationship, and I don’t have the cash to see pros. I’m not fussed by this. Should I be concerned about my celibacy? Absolutely Not Getting Sex Today Seeing as your celibacy is intermittent and by your own choice (you walked away from the best sex of your life for me time? What kind of mid-’90s Oprah bullshit is that?), ANGST, you’re unlikely to wind up hanging out on an “incelâ€? forum ďŹ lled with angry, violent, socially maladapted men who blame the fact that they can’t get laid on women and feminism. So long as you continue to take personal responsibility for all the sex you’re not having, there’s nothing to be concerned about.

My boyfriend and I have been together for two years. When we ďŹ rst got together, we had sex every day. Then it dwindled. We had major problems along the way and separated this winter. During that time, he went to another state. We got back together longdistance, and I received many letters from him saying how much he wanted to have sex with me. He moved back two weeks ago, and we’ve had sex only twice. He used to say he wanted me to make the ďŹ rst move. But if he really wanted me, wouldn’t he make a move? I feel so neglected, yet he claims he loves me. Please give me some insight. No Sex For Weeks

He says he wants sex (with you), but he doesn’t make a move. You say you want sex (with him), but you don’t make a move. So how about this: The next few times you want sex, NSFW, make a move. If he fucks you two out of three times, maybe he was telling you the truth when he said he’d like you to make the ďŹ rst move. If he rebuffs you every time, then he doesn’t want to have sex with you – and you’ll have to make a move to end this relationship. I’m a youngish man who’s been in a loving relationship with an older woman for a year. The only area where the age difference comes into play is largely unspoken between us – she wants kids. All of her friends are having kids, and she’s nearing the end of her childbearing years. I’m nowhere near ready, and I sometimes question whether I want to be monogamous to any one person for life. We never discuss it, but I can tell how deeply this bothers her and that in her ideal world, I’d be ready to start planning a future with her. I’m racked with guilt at the possibility that by the time I’m ready for that level of commitment (or, worse, by the time I realize I never will be), she’ll be biologically incapable of having kids, which is really important to her. This is all complicated by the fact that this is easily the most loving, trusting, respectful relationship I’ve ever been in. Bond Aficted By Years

What They Are Saying: ““I found Kathy and Patrick to be professional, honest, responsive and helpful at all times. It was a pleasure to work with them. Selling the home, I lived in for over 30 years was an emotional step which Kathy was sensitive to and applied no pressure. Their entire team was helpful when any questions came up. I would recommend them 100%. Hannah Wallace
