Thirsty brains, thirsty bodies PW columnist Timaree Schmit helps line up a weekend of smart sexuality that’s full to exploding with provocative talks & shows.
I
f someone can tell you what to do with your own body, including where you’re allowed to touch it and how you can experience pleasure, there is literally nothing they can’t control. That’s why every institution of power throughout history has used sexuality as a means of keeping people in line. And that’s why it’s an act of courageous rebellion to seek education about sex, to tell the world you’re sex-positive, to be open about your experiences as a sexual being. So I’m proud to be one of the organizers of the new SEXx Interactive conference, taking place May 7-10 here in Philly, the city where freedom was born. We’re packing workshops, lectures, live performances, art exhibits, comedy shows, networking events and dance parties into a crazy weekend devoted entirely to sex positivity. The seed was planted last summer, when Elicia Gonzales of GALAEI (a local queer Latin@ social justice organization) texted me from a TEDx event, suggesting we should do something similar, but for sexuality. We put together a threehour SEXx program at William Way LGBT Center and wondered if anyone would join us. Sure enough, they did. Before it even started, the seats were all taken. Hundreds streamed in and stood in every available space, listening and learning, laughing and being deeply moved. Apparently people are thirsty for a chance to be real about sex.
Inspired by the enthusiastic response, we upped the ante. Joining forces with a committee of dedicated folks like photographer/activist Tara Lessard, Widener graduate student Katelyn Regan, and the artsy folks of Click/Save and Wicked Gay Ways, we’re making SEXx Interactive exponentially bigger. Our three keynote speakers include the popular author and blogger Feminista Jones. Maybe you’re intrigued by the workshop on handling jealousy; perhaps learning about sexuality after cancer is useful to you; and maybe the boylesque lesson just sounds like fun. Most of the events are taking place at the First Unitarian Church at 2125 Chestnut, but some bits will be at other venues throughout the city. All the information, including programming and registration can be found at sexxinteractive. com. SEXx, I hope, is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for: the chance to be a part of something socially profound and personally meaningful and also really, really enjoyable. Because part of being sex positive is knowing that pleasure is valuable. And you have every right to it. —T.s. seXxinteractive: May 7-10. $20-$125. Various locations, with main programming at First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St. Full program schedule and tickets: sexxinteractive.com

David Brancaccio
The host of public radio’s Marketplace Morning Report will speak at WHYY, but maybe not about zombies.
I
f what you know about the world’s economy comes from the radio, then you know the voice of David Brancaccio. The financial journalist has hosted such shows as Marketplace and, on television, PBS’s Now; currently he’s anchoring American Public Media’s Marketplace Morning Report. Brancaccio will visit WHYY’s Philadelphia studio for a members-only ticketed conversation with Marketplace’s Dan Gorenstein and NewsWorks Tonight’s Dave Heller at 7:30pm on Wed., May 6. (See whyy.org/events for details.) Ahead of the trip, he took the time to answer PW’s questions about money, the environment—and, you know, zombies.
While the financial world is your most well-known beat, you’ve done some heavy lifting in the world of environmental reporting. It seems like it ought to be obvious that the world’s economic and ecologic systems are deeply intertwined—so how come politicians and pundits are al-
ways arguing that these interests stand in opposition to one another? Why can’t Americans talk like grownups about improving the enviornment in ways that will be good for business? Oh, you can run a very lucrative enterprise that destroys the environment. The thing is, you cannot do it for very long. Sustainability tends to be used as a synonym for helping the earth, for pursuing green. But it’s also a useful philosophy when you’re trying to build an economy that doesn’t just move money around but improves people’s livelihoods in the long run. When you mix the environment with the economy, a lot of good things happen. Imagine if you ordered new insulation for every energy-wasting building in Philadelphia. That should help the earth, right? But it would also put a vast number of people to work installing that insulation and upgrading windows. These are presumably people who desperately need jobs. Where would the money come from to fuel this conversion? From the money
saved not paying for all the energy that would otherwise be wasted.
Your family is half Italian, half Jewish. Growing up, what did your parents teach you about money, either deliberately or not? My parents seemed to sing from the same hymnal when it came to money. On a college professor’s annual salary of $8,600 in the late 1960s—adjust for inflation and it still converts to “Are you kidding me?”—my parents taught us to do enormous amounts with very little. My mother had a copy of Arthur Frommer’s Europe on Five Dollars a Day. I think Frommer’s idea was $5 per person, but my folks had us practically living off $5 for a family of five while traveling. This meant dividing a miniature European-sized bottle of Orangina among me and my two siblings. It promoted both frugality and a lower body mass—and opened our eyes to the wider world.
Which industry do you think is most likely to spawn the zombie apocalypse: pharmaceuticals, agriculture, IT or money management? Here is what I may have inherited from my mother’s side of the family: a rich imagination for disaster. And that imagination reminds me that financial crises tend to come our way about every seven years. The last one was seven years ago, if you mark it from the
collapse of Bear Stearns. I don’t know which sector sparks a zombie apocalypse; what I do know is that some very bright minds are studying this question right now. From Oxford to MIT to Berkeley, there are think tanks studying what are called existential threats to our species posed by technology. I remember sitting at a wedding reception with a legendary radio dramatist, Norman Corwin, some years ago. He was of an age to have had lived through the Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds broadcast that spooked half the country in 1938. I turned to him and boasted that I thought we could do it again. I suggested Mr. Corwin and I collaborate on a radio drama that sounded real about a gathering financial storm, punctuated with fake news reports from hyperventilating correspondents watching “meltdowns” in on markets in “Shanghai” or “Frankfurt.” Even with repeated on-air air disclaimers warning it was only a dramatization, I argued, a War of the Markets broadcast would still freak people out. Corwin, a twinkle in his eye, agreed that such a fiendish plan could still work. At the time, I didn’t realize I would be covering something very real and very close to that terrifying fictional scenario a few years later when the real estate market, Lehman Brothers, et.al. fell apart. The real world can sometimes be even more terrifying than drama. n

Chicken, beer & K-pop Bonchon is hot—both the wing sauce, and the music videos. BY BRIAN FREEDMAN
T
he production values were impeccable: Crisp, glossy and impossible to take your eyes off of. By this I mean both the chicken and the K-pop that was propulsively playing across the mammoth screens standing sentinel above and around the bar. Actually, it wasn’t all K-pop music videos; in the center of the multitudinous array of screens was the Bulls-Heat game, and the balletic moves there shared a certain DNA with the highly choreographed Bangtan Boys in their video for “We Are Bulletproof.” Taking in both while stuffing my face with perfectly crafted soy-garlic wings, the entire experience felt like a fully unified whole. There’s something of both the otherworldly and the elemental to Bonchon Chicken, the first and much-anticipated Philly outpost of the chain, and the tension between the two is the cause of much of the pleasure of visiting there. For all the shimmer of the red-sparkling bar and the music videos, there is plenty of beer to throw back. (Most of the brews are familiar big-production names, but my Yards straight from the bottle was a perfect accompaniment.) And you’ll definitely need that beer to wash down all the wings in store. They come in two varieties, soy garlic and hot, and both shellacks cling to wings whose shattering exteriors encase a center of notable moistness. Unexpectedly, I preferred the soy garlic, whose deep sense of umami made it impossible to stop munching away. But the gochugaru-spiked hot sauce ones were nearly as appealing: Spicy but not at
the expense of flavor. The occasional cube of pickled daikon, sweet and vivid and crunchy, framed those wings with an elemental sense of coolness. There is more here than wings, though they of course tend to get the most buzz. Korean favorites like bibimbob and bulgogi repose on the menu alongside more Japanese-style dishes like salmon teriyaki. For the late-night drinking crowd, there are seasoned fries, but I’d prefer the tteokbokki, a more-than-generous plateful of slippery noodles, rice-cake cylinders, and thin rectangles of fish cake, all of it swimming in a vibrant gochujang-spiked sauce the color of deep red lipstick. out added sweetness against the heat, and it was altogether a successful dish… except for the addition of cheese shreds melting on top, which was more of a distraction than anything else. That cheese, it turned out, was the only real slip-up in the choreography of Bonchon Chicken, which seems to have all the right moves. Just like those Kp-op stars emoting away on the screens. n

The election in Philly: Three weeks to go The May 19 primary is coming up fast. Whether you’re registered or not, here’s four things you gotta do.
10 PHILADELPHIA WEEKLY | april 29 - may 6 , 2015 | Philadelphiaweekly.com
L
ast year in these pages, I asserted that not voting was a form of speech. And, for those people who are not yet registered to vote in Philadelphia, I’d like to congratulate you on expressing your First Amendment rights by doing nothing. See, in order to vote in the primary election on May 19, Philadelphians needed to have registered last week. All you who wanted to vote but never got around to registering: I know, you had very important things to do instead of signing a piece of paper and putting a stamp on it. Well, to be fair, most people are more concerned with paying their rent, working, and making sure their loved ones are taken care of, so there’s no shame in forgetting to register to vote and remembering once it’s too late. It happens. Still, even if you’ve not registered, you can do much more than feel bad about yourself or complain on the Internet from a duct-taped office chair in your basement. In fact, you can do all sorts of things! So, for those people who, deliberately or not, have opted out of voting, here are four things you can still do to participate in American democracy.
1 2
Write a letter to the editor of a publication explain-
ing why you never registered yet still should get to have an opinion on politics. Note: You’ve got to cogently defend your thesis, otherwise everyone will ignore you. As they should.
Volunteer for a candidate you do support but can’t
vote for on May 19 because you were too busy watching Game of Thrones. Just because you can’t vote for somebody doesn’t mean you can’t knock on doors or make phone calls for them. The democratic process isn’t about what you can’t do, it’s about what you can do.
3
Use your social media infrastructure to espouse a
coherent opinion. This does not include hateful rants or nonsensical babbling. The Internet is all stocked up on that. Use your big-kid words.
4
Step out of your comfort zone and actually read or watch something political and factual. Explore an issue you don’t know much about or think you know a lot about but really don’t. Suggestions for this include Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail, Jason Osder’s documentary on the 1985 MOVE bombing in Philly, Let the Fire Burn, Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States, or the text of the U.S. Constitution. In my experience, about half of Internet arguments are caused by people who have no idea what the nation’s governing document actually says, so that last one is pretty important. Non-voters aren’t the only ones who can and should participate in the elections process, though. If you had the presence of mind to register, or if you were already registered, congratulations! Your duty moving forward is a little more solemn. That means you have homework due on May 19. (I know, sorry). So, for those who are registered, here are four things you can do between now and Election Day.
1
Educate yourself on the candidates. There are a lot of people running for a lot of seats in Philadelphia. Lucky for us, though, we Philadelphians have a non-partisan, nonprofit organization devoted exclusively to the integrity of the democratic process and voter education. It’s called the Committee of Seventy. Established in 1904 to combat corruption when there literally were smoke-filled rooms with men who looked like Mr. Monopoly sneering and guffawing, the organization says that over the past century it’s “transformed itself from being just an election watchdog to a bolder more comprehensive good government group.” One of the ways it does that is through voter education, including on its website, seventy.org. The organization has a 2015 Integrity Agenda, and over the next week, all candidates should respond to the agenda’s questionnaire. If a candidate does not respond to this questionnaire—well, that may say a lot about that candidate. It’s not just the Integrity Agenda, though: You can use Seventy’s website to learn about all the candidates running by reading their bios.
2
Attend a candidate forum and read the news. This
election season has been one of the best in terms of candidate access due in no small part to the frenetic amount of mayoral forums being held. We at PW have been covering them whenever we know they’re happening, so stay tuned to our news blog at PhillyNow.com to see if and when another forum is happening. They’re interesting, too: At one of the forums I attended, there was even an impromptu shouting match and protest! PW will be covering the election for the next three weeks, so be sure to pick up a print copy every Wednesday.
3
Talk to your friends and relatives who are registered voters themselves. Engage them on social
media; maybe ask them what they think of issues or candidates. Try to foster a sincere dialogue, being openminded to their choices and willing to share yours. In my experience, I learn a tremendous amount by asking people questions. The only way to form opinions is to learn about what other people believe. And talking about the election as much as possible will keep it on people’s radar to remind them to do the next thing on the list.
4
Vote on May 19. This one is pretty self-explanatory.
You’ve made it through all the education, reading, talking, and watching, and now it’s time to actually exercise your freedom! The polls are open 7am to 8pm on Tues., May 19. To find your polling place, go to the Philadelphia City Commissioners’ website at philadelphiavotes.com. There’s a lot of information on that site, too, including sample ballots and campaign finance data, too.
So it doesn’t matter whether or not you’re registered or not at this point. That ship has sailed, Philly. What matters is whether or not you want to actually participate in the political process. Hell, even if you do just one of the things listed here, you’re going to be more active as a citizen than a lot of people. Besides, what else were you going to do between now and May 19? Complain without actually doing anything? n
