I

tâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a tricky thing to want to bring something back, but not upset the sensibilities of the people who made it into the success that it was.

Since taking this over this position in October, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve slowly started to move Philadelphia Weekly in the direction of old; getting back to journalism that the dailies donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have time to chase, that keeps you excited and that keeps our lawyers on deck in the event we get threatened with a lawsuit.

The latter of which I actually heard rumblings of, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve alway been of the mentality that if people arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t threatening to sue your publication for investigative journalism, then you fucking suck at investigative journalism.

Anyway, this isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t about potential lawsuits over news stories but a fun item featured in City Paper (God rest its sweet soul) called â&#x20AC;&#x153;I Love You, I Hate You.â&#x20AC;?

Little known fact: When Rich Donnelly purchased Broad Street Media, which owned Philadelphia Weekly, he also purchased the rights to Philadelphia City Paper as well.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s right, Donnelly Distribution owns both.

We have rights to run anything that worked in that pub, but thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a respect issue that comes along with it.

The Bell Curve, if you remember, was one of the best columns in this entire city â&#x20AC;&#x201C; thanks Patrick Rapa â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but to bring it back because it did well in City Paper is weak and would water down the authenticity of really good journalism.

However, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I Love You, I Hate Youâ&#x20AC;? was good. And it was good because it was curated by us, but written by you, the hipsters, the goths, the single moms, the junkies, the politicians, the working professionals, the yuppies and preppies and even you, the bused-in South Jerseyans that seemingly invade the lower section of the Riverwards every weekend.

About ďŹ ve years ago, a former Philadelphia Magazine writer penned an extensive think piece called â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Death (and life) of Philadelphia Weekly and Philadelphia City Paper.â&#x20AC;? The article was like Nostradamus descended with an edict for the future of Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s true voice. But it was the closing paragraph of the mini-novela that really struck home when I read it; Fagone wrote: â&#x20AC;&#x153;What the weeklies need is some sort of creative destruction...They need the kind of people who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t exist in the Philadelphia media anymore: men and women who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t give a fuck.â&#x20AC;?

What I hope youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll continue to see in Philadelphia Weekly are more stories that focus on you the reader. And Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not trying to sell you here; if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to read it anymore thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ ne, there are plenty of other great publications in this city that deserve your eyeballs. However, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re one of the few that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t â&#x20AC;&#x153;give a fuckâ&#x20AC;? and want to only service you with what I like to call â&#x20AC;&#x153;oh, shit, journalism.â&#x20AC;?

Baby steps though, and that ďŹ rst step should be â&#x20AC;&#x153;I Love You, I Hate You.â&#x20AC;?

Playing host: 17 years of high-proďŹ le events that made Philly look good

The spotlight on Philadelphia has gotten even bigger since the turn of a new century. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in large part to not just the major moments but monster events that have brought their caravans to the City of Brotherly Love.

In addition to this weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s three-day NFL Draft extravaganza, we take a look at a few other major events that put Philly on the map and solidified her big city status to the world.

The nomination of President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence at last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s RNC in Cleveland was an earth-rattling event in American politics. But every presidential nomination has its own historical weight, and Philly provided the stage for former President George W. Bushâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nomination in 2000. The event left some bruises on the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s psyche â&#x20AC;&#x201D; messy protests, strongman showing by Philadelphia police, the displacement of the homeless and street vendors in Center City â&#x20AC;&#x201D; but in the end, Philly still looked good in the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eyes.

FIFA Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s World Cup China was slated to be the original host. But after an abrupt SARs outbreak in the country â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and with some advocating from womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s soccer boosters in the U.S. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Philly came to save the day as a last-minute host. More than 650,000 attendees ďŹ&#x201A;ocked to the city. Germany won. The U.S. came in third. Memories were made.

Eagles win NFC Championship It feels like an eternity ago since the adrenaline-fueled days of Terrell Owens, Donovan McNabb, Brian Dawkins, David Akers, and the rest of the Birdsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; 2004 lineup. The last three home games of the season whipped the city into a frenzy, which climaxed with the Eaglesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; NFC-securing victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Ultimately, they lost the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots in Florida. But Philly and its passion for sports lived up to their hype, and for a brief moment, the sports world forgot about that time we threw snowballs at Santa Claus.

Twenty years after the city played host to the Live Aid concert to raise money for the Ethiopian famine, Philly once again came in the spotlight to host a massive crowd for Live 8. UnofďŹ cial estimates ranged from 500,000 to 1.5 million attendees around the Benjamin Franklin Parkway over the course of the 8-hour event. It was an early harbinger of a major festival that has since come to call Philly home.

NHL Draft

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s probably a few reasons why the blockbuster event came to Philly in 2012 and returned in the years since. One, apparently Jay-Z loves Philly.

Two, the world class Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

Three, crowds over 80,000 â&#x20AC;&#x201D; easy. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a list that keeps on writing itself as the years go on, and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking forward to the ďŹ fth annual Budweiserbacked concert in September.

The closest precursor to this weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s NFL Draft, thousands ďŹ&#x201A;ocked to the Wells Fargo Center to get a ďŹ rst look at the cream of the hockey seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s crop. The 2014 draft showed the sports world elite was a ďŹ rm reminder that Philly can conduct equal parts business and party. Already, the NFL Draft has created a more resounding buzz.

Phillies win World Series Twenty years from now, the next generation of Philadelphians will be regaled by stories of the jubilant chaos that swept the city after the Phillies became, to quote former Phillies second baseman Chase Utley, â&#x20AC;&#x153;world fucking champions.â&#x20AC;? Granted, ďŹ&#x201A;ipping cars over during the Broad Street celebration was maybe not the best look. But did Philly not look good to the world?

We were beautiful, folks. We were champions.

By no means unique to Philly, we were close enough to the original Occupy event on Wall Street in New York City. Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Occupy protests drew sizable crowds, garnered national news headlines, and showed the world that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a city that takes economic inequality seriously â&#x20AC;&#x201D; even if, in the end, our own mayor shut the whole show down and police arrested more than 50 peaceful demonstrators.

Pope in Philly An expanded version of this list would have to include the visit of Pope John Paul II in October 1979.

But in recent memory, few events have shed a better light on the City of Brotherly Love than Pope Francisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; memorable stay during the World Meeting of Families in 2015. Security was no joke, but for two days the streets swelled with hymns, prayers, and faces from all over the world.

Despite prior experience hosting the RNC in Philadelphia, we didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really have any idea what to expect from the Bernie Sanders bros and the Clinton loyalists locking horns last summer. But despite road-blocking protests, police made few arrests and the convention went off without a hitch. Of course, none of that matters now that America Has Been Made Great â&#x201E;˘ again.

This week the city expects to draw a crowd of 200,000 and generate an $80 million economic impact on the city, according to the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s keep up our winning streak as a host, Philly.

ust minutes from the stadiums. Only minutes from Center City and the sports complexes. Easy access from I-95. Free lunch buffet from noon to 3:00.

Even the voicemail operators at Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premier gentlemenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clubs know that sports mean business.

When the Eagles play the Cowboys at home, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all hands on deck. As far as basketball goes, the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs both bring in a crowd of travelling fans. Wing Bowl is practically a national holiday for adult entertainment centers.

Of course, there are non-sporting events that pack the respective houses of Club Risque, Cheerleaders, Penthouse Club and Delilahâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s.

The Democratic National Convention last summer?

Not so much. The Republican National Convention in 2000? A grand old party indeed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The RNC [crowd] is open-minded as far as this industry goes, believe it or not,â&#x20AC;? says â&#x20AC;&#x153;Vivian,â&#x20AC;? a veteran entertainer who works at Cheerleaders in South Philly.

Some clubs, according to Delilahâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s marketing assistant Christine Langston, are always â&#x20AC;&#x153;putting on the best party in townâ&#x20AC;? for every industry that stops in Philly, from medical summits to tattoo conventions. But seven days a week from noon to 2:00 a.m., sports are a strip clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bread and butter. It should be no surprise that the upcoming NFL Draft â&#x20AC;&#x201D; which is to the male football executive crowd what the popeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s visit was to devout Catholic families from Latin American â&#x20AC;&#x201D; promises to be one of the biggest events of the year for Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s $35,/ 0$<

adult entertainment industry.

Granted, mega-events such as Pope Francisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; visit in 2015 and the Democratic National Convention last summer drew much bigger audiences, even if thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dispute about their actual economic impact. The NFL Draft is expected to draw 200,000 attendees and $80 million in direct and indirect revenue for the city, according to the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau. And if clubhouse managers know their clientele as they say they do, you can bet on them grabbing a chunk of that business.

That doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean that gentlemanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clubs just sit back and wait for the football bro squads to line up at the door. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re bringing in celebrity porn stars. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have all of their ďŹ&#x201A;at-screen TVs tuned into the draft.

Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be out on the streets marketing, making their money.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The best party in townâ&#x20AC;?

The entertainers will be on site at the NFL Draft event space on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. â&#x20AC;&#x153;An event like this is something weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be looking forward to all year,â&#x20AC;? says Vivian at Cheerleaders. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A weekend like this,â&#x20AC;? she says. It means â&#x20AC;&#x153;best costumes... best attitudes...tips and private rooms.â&#x20AC;?

Vivian â&#x20AC;&#x201C; you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need a last name, she says, everyone knows her as Vivian â&#x20AC;&#x201C; will be among the dancers out with promotional teams from their respective gentlemenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clubs. Their job is to eye up target prospects and lure them into the clubs during and after the draft events. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be out in our little cheery dance outďŹ ts ... ob-

viously, not what we wear in the club,â&#x20AC;? Vivian says with a laugh. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll discretely hand out VIP passes to the guys for free admission.â&#x20AC;?

Cheerleaders wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be alone.

Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be joined by other bigname venues such as Club Risque, which has locations in Northeast and South Philly. Langston of Delilahâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s says the club maintains a promotional team ďŹ ve to seven days a week throughout the year to gin up business, and this week is no different. (Calls to the Penthouse Club in Northeast Philly went unreturned.) The city boasts other adult entertainment clubs in its further-ďŹ&#x201A;ung neighborhoods, but these are the name brands that are most likely to draw a crowd to their accessible locations with free parking lots.

Inside the clubs, the specials go beyond the free lunch buffet.

During the recent tattoo convention, Cheerleaders drew crowds with a celebrity appearance from inked-up porn star Clio Valentine. This week, the club will host fellow porn star Alexis Amore.

In terms of the entertainment, Langston says that all of the dancers will be working this week at Delilahâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not mandatory, she added, but this is, after all, a lucrative opportunity for those working in the tip economy.

The Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau is responsible for that $80 million estimate, with more than $6.8 million going to state and local taxes. The CVB uses a standard arrangement of metrics â&#x20AC;&#x201D; number of attendees, estimated hotel expenses, and direct and indirect spending related to the event. That indirect spending is where Cheerleaders and the like will make their money.

Alethia Calbeck, the CVBâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s director of communications, declined to provide a breakdown of how that ďŹ gure might impact strip clubs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Wish we could be more helpful, but the only statistic we can share at this time is the overall estimated economic impact for the event is $80 million,â&#x20AC;? Calbeck said.

Unfortunately, the gentlemenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clubs reached by PW also declined to talk about potential revenue. As for the entertainers, all Vivian could say is that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s looking to be a good weekend, at least for the Cheerleaders crowd. s hotel rooms ďŹ ll, restaurants run out of reservations and the Parkway becomes the epicenter of the sporting universe this week, Larry Needle will undoubtedly be at his Center City desk, sporting a massive grin, ear-to-ear.

The architect of bringing the NFL Draft to Philadelphia, the leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s marquee event â&#x20AC;&#x201C; second only to the Super Bowl â&#x20AC;&#x201C; joins an extensive list of events Needle has aided in bringing to Philadelphia as executive director of PHL Sports. PHL Sports, formerly known as the Philadelphia Sports Congress, is the sports arm of the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau, led by its fearless leader in Needle for more than 20 years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I still get a kick out of this,â&#x20AC;? said Needle during a phone interview with Philadelphia Weekly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Philadelphia is a phenomenal city, with a great pulse and a passion for sports like no other. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not my bias here, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just a fact. The best part about all of this is that we get a chance to show the world with events like NFL Draft that this is the place to come to showcase your event.â&#x20AC;?

NFL Draft was coming to Philadelphia, Needle noted that it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t as much in the way of wining and dining the league as it was showing a few spots that would work best. After looking at potential venues in

Center City and South Philly, the Parkway simply became the logical choice. Additionally, the NFL is still keen on taking this event outside, as Philly follows Chicago as the second town in as many years to take the draft away from NYCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Radio City Music Hall and host the event outdoors. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Parkway is a beautiful location that really serves as a phenomenal backdrop for the event. It really didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take much convincing, to be honest,â&#x20AC;? said Needle. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s] the art museum, you have the Rocky steps and the history and beauty of the Parkway itself. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the perfect place to hold an event, and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re just so thankful that the NFL agrees with us.â&#x20AC;?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also the perfect place to hold the masses who will ďŹ&#x201A;ock to the three-day festival beginning April 27, as Needle estimated that more than 200,000 rabid NFL fans will head to the area, with more than half from out of town. That means full hotel rooms, full restaurants and shops to what Needle also estimated will equate to $80 million in total projected impact, including revenue that will also arrive via local taxes and jobs, primarily for the construction of the massive amphitheater on the base of the art museum steps.

By comparison, a Philly.com report noted that the NFL Draft Experience is slated to have a $25 million production cost. Much of that â&#x20AC;&#x201C; $20 million to be exact â&#x20AC;&#x201C; will be covered by the NFL, with the remaining $5 million ponied up by the PHLCVB and the 2017 Host Draft Committee.

Clearly, a sound investment for the City of Brotherly Love. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The [economic] impact is massive, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also the exposure,â&#x20AC;? said Needle. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For three days, Philadelphia is in faces of millions of homes, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s on the tongues of media members, athletes, commentators, you name it.

To call this a win-win for Philadelphia is understating it, and just like events weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had in the past, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m conďŹ dent that Philadelphia will showcase well.â&#x20AC;?

Needleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s resume of holding major events is extensive. Since his appointment as executive director of the Sports Congress (now PHL Sports) in 1996, events such as the NBA All-Star Weekend, NCAA Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Final Four, the U.S. Figure Skating Championships and ESPNâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s X Games have held events here. PHL Sports nearly hit the jackpot in 2014, as it was a ďŹ nalist as one of the host cities in an aggressive bid by the United States Soccer Federation for the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cup. Russia was given rights to the 2018 event, and 2022 will be in Qatar, but had the United States won, Philadelphia would have been a major player. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have the infrastructure to host any major event, in my opinion,â&#x20AC;? Needle said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our stadiums, our mass transportation, our hotels and restaurants are world class.

We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to build to accommodate, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all already here; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s our job [at PHL Sports] to sell our city as the place that major events want to come to. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what we are doing every day.â&#x20AC;?

Needle told PW that PHL Sports is actively in discussions to host other major events. One is the continued bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is now a joint North American bid among Canada, Mexico and the United States. Additionally, talks with the NCAA to continue to host menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s March Madness tournament rounds are ongoing, and could the ArmyNavy Game make a permanent return to Philadelphia, its home for more than a century?

Maybe, if Needle has his way. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sports is a big part of the culture here in Philadelphia,â&#x20AC;? said Needle. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It starts with our hometown teams and traditions and grows to a global level. On the weekend of this massive event, Philadelphia also hosts the Penn Relays, which is a staple, and [Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Arena League football team] the Soul are home [at the Wells Fargo Center].

Mazzoni CEO and board president tender resignations

BROUGHT TO LIGHT ConďŹ dence in Shein and Ruiz, gathering signatures on a document that accused the leadership of â&#x20AC;&#x153;secrecy, poor oversight and complicity which has allowed institutional racism and abuse of power and authority to ďŹ&#x201A;ourish.â&#x20AC;? Following the meeting, around 60 employees around half the staff walked out in protest, gathering outside the medical center at 9th and Locust.

In the following days, the protests continued. Former Mazzoni employee Abdul-Aliy Muhammed, co-founder of the Black and Brown Workers Collective, a major catalyst in the ďŹ ght for Sheinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s resignation, publicly stated he would refuse his HIV treatment meds until Shein resigned. On Friday, Muhammad took to BBWCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Facebook to state: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m ofďŹ cially declining my HAART regimen until Nurit Shein resigns as CEO. Nurit Shein has been allowed to continue power abuse and intimidation as allegations are unfolding about her knowledge of sexual misconduct by Dr. Winn.â&#x20AC;?

The protests also resonated outside the Mazzoni community. Calls for Sheinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ouster could be found on social media under the hastag #NuritKnew.

On Thursday, Philly Councilwoman Helen Gym sent a letter addressed to Mazzoni in care of to Shein calling for an explanation of recent reports.

She also posted on Twitter: â&#x20AC;&#x153;I applaud Mazzoni Center staff for their commitment to patients and support Black & Brown Workers Collectiveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s call for accountability on serious allegations.â&#x20AC;?

n the wake of an alleged sexual misconduct scandal, an alleged cover-up and two mass employee walkouts, Mazzoni Center CEO and executive director Nurit Shein and board president Jimmy Ruiz tendered their resignations from the LGBT health-care facility on Monday morning.

According to a press release from the Center, a meeting was held Sunday with members of the board who requested the pair step down from their responsibilities. Mazzoni, a large medical center serving LGBT populations in Philly, has been at the center of a controversy since the suspension and subsequent resignation of former medical director Dr. Robert Winn.

Winn has been accused of sexual misconduct and prescription documentation irregularities by a variety of former and current Mazzoni employees, who also claim that board leadership, namely Shein and Ruiz, knew of the misconduct for years and failed to act. April 12 Mark Coyne, a pharmacist who served on Mazzoniâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s board of directors, tells Philadelphia Weekly that the board and Shein were made aware of allegations of sexual misconduct and improper documentation of prescriptions against Dr. Winn as far back as five years ago, but that they were dismissed due to the anonymous nature of the allegations. Coyne asserts the board called for a background check on Winn, but no further action is taken.

ix years ago, Taliyah Smith â&#x20AC;&#x201C; an Academy Park High School and Delaware State University grad â&#x20AC;&#x201C; began capitalizing on the smart, sharp freestyle rap videos she had posted on YouTube the year previous-such as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Believe Meâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;No Flex Zoneâ&#x20AC;?â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and became Lee Mazin, Philadelphia hip-hop superstar. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was good with words, and I sang, but it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t as if I was looking for this,â&#x20AC;? she said during a conversation in 2014. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I never really imagined myself with a career in music.â&#x20AC;?

What Mazin, a 22-year-old South Philly native, was looking into was a job in psychology, her major throughout college. Instead, she quickly wound up a much-looked-to and inspiring rapper and public ďŹ gure, cutting danceable tracks such as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Back It Up,â&#x20AC;? which wound up as part of Power 99â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s summer rotation, as well as deeply personal $35,/ 0$<

songs such as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Walk In.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wrote stories that girls of my age could relate to, about struggle, getting through, being victorious and doing it independently,â&#x20AC;? she said in a recent sit down with Philadelphia Weekly, talking about lasting inspiration and the one true constant in her life â&#x20AC;&#x201C; from the past to the present â&#x20AC;&#x201C; her mom. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a forever thing, she did everything for me. That means a lot.â&#x20AC;?

Now, after spending 2013 to 2015 as the ďŹ rst lady of Meek Mill's Dreamchasers label, Mazin is free to run her own game.

Throughout 2016, she dropped torrid tracks such as â&#x20AC;&#x153;F*ck Me Like Youâ&#x20AC;? with fellow local rapper PnB Rock and producer Charlie Heat as well as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Where Ya Ass At,â&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Na NANA.â&#x20AC;? Mazin also appeared on â&#x20AC;&#x153;that reality television thing,â&#x20AC;? Sisterhood of Hip Hop on Oxygen last summer. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s empowered music where sexuality and strength run hand-in-hand.

All that, and still, 2017 is Leeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s busiest year yet. Starting with the release of a new EP last week (Tens and Fives), a full album project due out in May (The Level UP) and a tour of area high schools this week that ďŹ nds the rapper-singer-producer bouncing between two afternoon concerts per day in the name of female empowerment and fresh Mazin music, time is money for Mazin.

Disassociating herself from Mill didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t happen on unfriendly terms. It was simply time for a change for Mazin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I thought it was better to go on my own because I was an independent artist even when I was afďŹ liated with Dreamchasers,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was moving the very same way before I signed to them, so, I just decided to cut the ties. I still consider Meek to be good people, and still cut music with him, but I really just wanted to be independent.â&#x20AC;?

As a purely independent artist in control of her own destiny, what sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s looked for in any collaborator beyond Mill â&#x20AC;&#x201C; be it PnB Rock or clubby Tens and Fives producer Murrille â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is good energy and great timing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If good vibes are there, too, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s even better.â&#x20AC;?

Featuring a handful of producers and diverse songs, The Level UP is a step-up in Mazinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sound and soul-searching lyrics. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I experienced a lot in the last several years â&#x20AC;&#x201C; physically, personally, emotionally â&#x20AC;&#x201C; that I deďŹ nitely grew from, and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all a part of the album. There are a lot of visual aspects to that record that are very telling and exceptional that I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wait to spring on people.â&#x20AC;?

State correctional institution pumps brakes on family meal for inmates

ne day a year, prisoners serving life behind bars at the State Correctional Institution in Dallas, Pa., traditionally have been permitted to have a Family Day banquet.

It was the one, sole sit-down meal with members of their families that lifers were allowed.

At least that was the case, according to lifer Bobby Harris.

But, this year, the practice is no more.

Harris, who has been in police custody for the last 29 years, said the event was more than a simple meal. It was motivation for lifers to behave, it was a chance for families to be families and it served as a unique type of family therapy that would be otherwise unavailable.

Harris serves as president of the L.I.F.E. Association â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which stands for Life Isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t For Ever â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a group of inmates serving life sentences who work to provide a positive impact on the world outside their prison walls. He has been in prison since he was just 15 years old.

He said that the Lifers Family Day Banquet â&#x20AC;&#x201C; where, he said, the inmates themselves covered costs and brought in food from vendors â&#x20AC;&#x201C; might be the only time a year that many inmates would be able to see family members. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This means everything to some people who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get to see their families together, except for at this event,â&#x20AC;? he said in a recent interview. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of people would carpool to this. People would bring family members, grandmothers, you know, people who couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t visit on their own.â&#x20AC;?

Also, Harris said, the Family Day tradition was essentially an incentive for good behavior as, for more than four decades, lifers were allowed to attend an annual sitdown meal with members of their families, if they had been well-behaved. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It has been a family event since 1975,â&#x20AC;? said Harris. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And now they are taking it away.â&#x20AC;?

This year, the Lifers Family Day Banquet that would have been held in September will instead consist of an inmate-only â&#x20AC;&#x153;fellowship mealâ&#x20AC;? where inmates will be permitted to select the menu and can invite a speaker of their choosing, said Amy Wor-

den, spokeswoman for the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Department of Corrections.

Worden â&#x20AC;&#x201C; who said the prison only has record of the event dating back to the 80s â&#x20AC;&#x201C; called the traditional family day â&#x20AC;&#x153;a major logistical challenge.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;The dinner requires substantial overtime costs for corrections ofďŹ cers and other support staff,â&#x20AC;? she wrote in an email.

She cited overtime costs for the ofďŹ cers who would be needed to staff the weekend event as the reason the event was cancelled.

Worden said that it would cost about $7,000 to cover the overtime costs for ofďŹ cers overlooking the welfare of the 100150 visitors to the prison who would be anticipated to attend.

Instead of attending a sit-down, one-day banquet, Worden said that when families come to see their loved ones during regular admission times, the visitation rooms â&#x20AC;&#x153;have fully stocked vending machines (and by that I mean including salads, sandwiches and hot food.)â&#x20AC;?

But, that offer came as cold comfort to Harrisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; wife, Brenda.

Instead, the liferâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wife said that she feels as if the inmatesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; families are the ones being punished because they will lose the one day a year when wives and husbands, mothers, fathers and their children, could all share a meal together. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Why even have a banquet if you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the families in there?â&#x20AC;? she asked.

Though she recalled that there was no banquet last year, Harris said that in previous years, the inmates not only covered catering costs for the event, but they were also allowed to cook food for their families as well. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There would be all kinds of stuff. They let the inmates cook the food,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Now, you can visit and have food from the vending machine onlyâ&#x20AC;Ś Now, when you go, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s starting to feel like youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in prison, too.â&#x20AC;?

To Keir Bradford-Grey, head of the Defender Association of Philadelphia, the loss of the Family Day event isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just about allowing families into the prison.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also that the long-running event served as a good behavior reward for lifers, who she said are often tasked with extra jobs in prisons, such as running educational programs, helping integrate younger prisoners into the institution and serving as mentors to them. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Quite frankly, I think these individuals do so much to keep the prison runningâ&#x20AC;Ś I think that the prison could ďŹ nd the money or they could set up a fundraiser,â&#x20AC;? said Bradford-Grey.

In fact, members of the L.I.F.E. Association at SCI-Dallas even do outreach to support the community in Philadelphia.

Bradford-Gray noted that at SCI-Dallas, the group works to provide scholarships to the children of fellow inmates, provide funds for cleanup efforts in Philadelphia neighborhoods and donate to area charities, in an effort to have an active role in the world outside the institution.

This banquet could serve as a reward for the efforts they make to give back, she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This annual event is the one thing that they look forward to, to have some contact with the outside world,â&#x20AC;? said BradfordGrey.

Bradford-Grey said that she is drafting a letter to SCI-Dallas, in the hopes of having the event reinstated. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I could just imagine how devastating this is for them,â&#x20AC;? she said.

But, to inmates such as Harris, the lifer said the loss of the event wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just devastating, it was demoralizing.

As president of the L.I.F.E. Association, Harris said he hopes to serve as a mentor to other inmates.

He said that throughout the year, inmates look forward to the event, and the newly revamped plan for the banquet to serve as an inmate-only affair was a letdown.

Inmates eat together every day, he said, so what would make this event special? â&#x20AC;&#x153;How can it be considered a family day meal if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re denying our families to be a part of it?â&#x20AC;? he asked.

In the past, Harris said, lifers could look forward to the event, and it would also act as an incentive to monitor each otherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s behavior, since good behavior would be rewarded with invitations to the family sitdown meal.

He said just knowing the event was coming could often help quell discontent in the prison. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This was a paciďŹ er,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a reward for guys who were doing well.â&#x20AC;?

Lifers, he said, can be feel bitter, hopeless and withdrawn â&#x20AC;&#x201C; especially those sentenced to spend life in prison as a juvenile, like he was â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but, the thought of looking forward to a day each year to eat a meal as a family with loved ones, often came as something of a light in the darkness. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was like a counseling session to help you and your family,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It [the prison] really turned into a real family environment for the dayâ&#x20AC;Ś And, you take away that moment of contentment and peace of mind away from us, why?â&#x20AC;? Poe among guests legalization Pennsylvaniaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Auditor General Eugene DePasquale took to the feet of the rotunda steps in the Capitol recently with marijuana activists to lend his support for the legalization effort.

DePasquale, considered the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ scal overseer, spoke alongside Democratic State Reps. Brian Sims, Ed Gainey and Mark Rozzi as well as activist groups such as NORML. Following the event, DePasquale told Philadelphia Weekly that decriminalization and legalization make sense in ways that extend beyond dollars and cents. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It makes ďŹ nancial sense,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The public supports moving in a different direction and prohibition has failed.

So regardless of the format or the audience or where Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m saying it, the message is the same.â&#x20AC;?

Pennsylvania is implementing the scaled-down medical marijuana program that was passed last year. Those looking to get in on the ground ďŹ&#x201A;oor of the ďŹ&#x201A;owering industry are angling for a limited number of dispensary and grower licenses. All the while, marijuana activists have not taken their eyes off their white whale: full legalization.

And this isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the ďŹ rst time DePasquale came out vocally in support of that aim.

During a news conference in March, he suggested regulation and taxation of recreational marijuana as one possible step in beginning to scale back our stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s budget shortfall.

DePasquale claimed the state could bring in $200 million in tax revenue should lawmakers give it the green light.

That number is an estimate based on the $129 million that Colorado made in 2016 as a signiďŹ cantly smaller state.

When asked if the recent slew of states approving recreational marijuana helps in convincing concerned lawmakers, DePasquale offered a caveat. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I do think it helps the cause although clearly thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more work to be done in terms of building support,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; COLT SHAW | @COLTSHAW_ $35,/ 0$<

Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Department of Licenses and Inspection evoked Oaklandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ghost Shipâ&#x20AC;? disaster on Monday in describing the condition of a Frankford warehouse where police busted a marijuana party attended by hundreds of smokers and pot legalization activists on Saturday.

Police said they made 22 arrests and let 175 others walk during the 7:45 p.m. raid at 4562 Worth St., during which they allegedly conďŹ scated 50 pounds of bulk marijuana, $50,000 cash, four handguns and about 100 pounds of â&#x20AC;&#x153;THCinfused edibles.â&#x20AC;? THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol, the principal psychoactive component of cannabis.

Ghost Ship was the nickname of a 10,000-square-foot warehouse that had been converted into an artists collective in the California cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fruitvale section. People lived at the venue and held concert parties there. Last Dec. 2, about 50 people were attending a house music party there when a ďŹ re broke out and claimed 36 lives.

Court records show that one of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leading pot activists, N.A. Poe, was among those arrested. Just last week, Philadelphia Weekly proďŹ led the 37-year-old South Philly resident whose real name is Richard Tamaccio as part of its The Philly Effect series.

Poe did not mention the Frankford warehouse event during an interview for the article. L&I characterized the venue as a disaster waiting to happen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Inspectors noted that open ďŹ&#x201A;ame had been in use at the event and that the party space had only one entrance/exit, putting the 200-plus guests and ďŹ rst responders at signiďŹ cant risk should an emergency have occurred,â&#x20AC;? the city agency stated in a news release. â&#x20AC;&#x153;L&I issued more than a dozen violations, the majority of which were for infractions of the ďŹ re code.â&#x20AC;?

SpeciďŹ cally, inspectors reported that ďŹ re alarm wiring had been cut; there was an accumulation of rags, paint, trash and other combustibles near sources of ignition; exits were blocked or locked; overhead sprinklers were damaged or broken; ďŹ re inspections were not current; torches were being used indoors; extension cords were hanging from the rafters and sprinklers; electrical boxes were exposed; ďŹ re extinguishers were missing; and ďŹ re safety signs were missing.

I live in Germantown, which is where I was born, but I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t raised here.

I came back from a teaching job that I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t expect to have for very long.

And just got rooted here. Bought a house here. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a big part of my adult life, my twenties and thirties. Putting down some roots in this place and getting to know the neighborhood. Wanting to give back to this neighborhood, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always been a neighborhood in ďŹ&#x201A;ux. And itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a big part of what I am and provides a backdrop for what I write. But Philly is too.

You know, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been writing a really long time and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m just starting to get â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was kind of torturous, to be honest with you. There were a lot manifestations of the book, different combinations of poems before I knew how to put together a book. It was a pretty isolating process until I learned how to share the book. Being vulnerable about letting others see what Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d written. And also talk about my dream of wanting to publish a book of poems. Once I started to actually say that, outloud, to people. They started to see me differently, they started to help me towards that. Encourage me towards it. It started to become more real.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;But you know, I worked a 9-to-5 for a long time. But it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really a 9-to-5 it was more a 7-to-10, being an English teacher and helping to nurture a lot of other peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s writing. And being the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Poetry Ladyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; at a high school, I really loved that. But sometimes it was really stiďŹ&#x201A;ing.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I remember one kid said to me in the classroom saying â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;All English teachers are failed writers.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; And I remember giving him this look, like, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a nice thing to say.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; But at home, later that night, being, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;God, maybe heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s right.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?
