Ryan Straub discovered a Bloch Bro’s Tobacco Company sign spanning the entire brick wall on one side of the property at 2979 Edgemont St. including the master bedroom.

f the walls at 2979 Edgemont Street could talk, they would tell of a time when billboards didn’t exist and the sides of houses served as advertising space. Ryan Straub, owner and broker at Neighborhood Real Estate in Port Richmond, bought the property in 2016 and rented it out until the tenant moved out on Feb. 1.

Two weeks later, when Straub decided to pouch chewing tobacco, the exact type advertouch it up for resale, a worker noticed a hole tised on Edgemont Street. The company hired in the wall with something more than brick barn painter Harley Warrick, and in 1925, behind it. Behind the sheet rock wall and installation were the bold, white letters of a Bloch Bro’s Chew and Smoke Mail Pouch Tobacco sign, complete with the company’s logo. “He sent me a picture and I said, ‘Oh my God, just keep going, just go down the hallway, go downstairs. It has to be the whole side of the house, Straub said, “And, literally within three hours, everything was exposed and that tells me the previous owner, whatever he did and renovated, that PHOTO: MELISSA KOMAR this was here just like this and he just Eighth Street marks the spot: The “billboard on the sheet-rocked on top of it. Based in Wheeling, West Virginia, wall at Edgemont Street directs customers to Eighth for the company was known for its mail tobacco.

he began painting the advertisement on more than 20,000 barns in the Ohio River Valley. Straub has been trying to dig up history on the wall, but has come to some conclusions in the meantime. “The properties to the left of this were built ďŹ rst and this one was the end of the row,â€? Straub said. “And, this was just a temporary billboard on the side of the wall to sell tobacco products This is a billboard. So, if there were no houses from here all the way to Ann, you’d be able to read the whole thing. It’s a billboard of about 20 feet tall and 40 feet long.â€? Public records indicate the property was built in 1921, according to Straub, and now sits sandwiched in between two other row houses in the middle of the block. Straub hypothesized that the houses to the right were a second phase or different developer, the houses being a couple feet shorter and built with different bricks. “This was deďŹ nitely a billboard,â€? Straub said. “And, I think it’s just so unique. Like a Picasso piece, there’s only a couple of them. And, this is one of a kind.â€? Straub did some research on the company, too. “In the 1900s, every barn in Ohio had this on the side and then they started doing brick structures,â€? Straub said. “So, it’s like a corner store selling Marlboro. This is Bloch Brothers Tobacco. And it was sold at a store on Eighth Street.â€? The “Eighth Streetâ€? emblem is visible behind the light switch ďŹ xture at the bottom of the stairs leading to the second oor. The rest of the advertisement on the Edgemont Street brick wall is visible from the front door up to the door of the back bedroom and on an entire wall in the front bedroom. Parts of it are covered by wall, including the closet in the hallway upstairs and the kitchen, which Straub does not plan to expose. And, some of the paint appears to have been removed in the living room. Straub does not plan to alter the painting on the wall in any way, but hopes to collect more history on it to present as a gift to the future homeowner. “So, it’s not someone who was alive when it was painted, maybe it’s someone who was 70 or 80 who might have some old photos laying around,â€? he said. “I don’t think it would be in public records anywhere. I’m just hoping by chance some old photos pop up.â€? If the history remains buried, Straub is still excited to have made the discovery. “I started doing my own rehabs within the past year and I’ve exposed about ďŹ ve or six walls, and they were all normal,â€? he said. “I’ve been in the business since 2004 and I’ve sold hundreds of houses. If I painted this on myself, someone would think, ‘Why the hell did he paint that on the wall?’ but because it’s almost a hundred years old and it’s natural, this is beautiful. It’s like a work of art.â€? Q TWITTER: @PHILLYWEEKLY

Jailhouse down As prison population declines, Philly aims to close its oldest, crumbling jail by 2020 BY MAX MARIN

J

ust three years ago, Philadelphia held the ignominious distinction of having the highest incarceration rate among large American cities. On Wednesday, following a years-long decarceration effort, city ofďŹ cials announced plans to shutter the oldest and most dilapidated of the city’s six jails within the next two years. The proposed closure of the 91-year-old House of Correction, informally known as “The Creek,â€? comes amid a 32 percent decrease in Philadelphia’s prison population over the last three years – a concerted effort supported by a $3.5 million MacArthur Foundation grant awarded to the city in 2016. In June 2015, the city housed nearly 8,200 adult inmates. “Today,â€? Mayor Jim Kenney said at Wednesday’s unpublicized City Hall press conference, “our jail population is the lowest it has been in 20 years at just under 5,500 [inmates].â€? With 199 inmates remaining at the House of Correction, which has 666 cells, Blanche Carney, the city’s prison commissioner, said the depopulation process could move faster than anticipated, but emphasized the city cannot close the building until the systemwide population falls and stays below 4,800 inmates. The city’s remaining jails could safely house that number of inmates without the House of Correction, Carney noted. District Attorney Larry Krasner is doing his part to expedite the process by hewing to his campaign promise to further thin the once-overcrowded prisons via new sentencing guidelines. Since ending cash bail recommendations for a slew of non-violent offenses last month, Krasner said, the county’s depopulation process has accelerated from six fewer inmates per day to 12. That ďŹ gure comes from internal analysis of inmate totals 50 days before and after the DA’s bail reforms went into effect.

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

But the crumbling House of Correction building will remain standing after the inmates are gone, despite calls to raze it entirely. “HOC – once the last person inside is released – can never reopen and must be demolished,â€? the No215Jail coalition said in a statement. Carney said the city will continue to maintain the 91-year-old facility due to its location at the heart of the Northeast Philadelphia prison campus, centered along State Road. “We’ll hopefully not have a need to use it again, but it would be used for ex space in the event that the population increased,â€? Carney said, adding that such a spike is unexpected at the time. Wednesday’s announcement was a big step, but decarceration advocates at No215Jail are still seeking additional commitments from the city, such as limiting the expansion of electronic monitoring and investing money saved by depopulation efforts back into communities. A recent Inquirer investigation found the Philadelphia Department of Prisons billed the city $26 million in overtime last year – despite the historic drop in inmate population. “We need our city to reinvest resources into our communities who have been torn apart by mass incarceration for too long,â€? the group said. “Instead of prisons, we need to invest in what we know keeps us safe and free: non-punitive, communitybased holistic supportive services.â€? OfďŹ cials noted that demolition of the old jail would cost the city millions of dollars; they remain in discussion about how to best repurpose the building for rehabilitative purposes. Details are scarce at the moment. Critics have long decried the conditions at the House of Correction, which still uses key locks, and has neither air conditioning nor a sprinkler system. Nearly three years ago, Councilman Bobby Henon proposed to spend millions of city dollars on acquiring waterfront land and building a new jail to replace the House of Corrections. Those plans were ultimately tabled – for the best, Henon noted Wednesday. “Sometimes, initially, like myself, you see things a little different,â€? Henon said. “In the end, the inhumane conditions are undeniable and the bottom line is there shouldn’t be a human being at the House of Corrections.â€? Punk pioneer Jeff Rosenstock headlined Union Transfer on Sunday, April 22.

“Music for nobody Jeff Rosenstock doesn’t want to be your hero – but he still loves you, Philly BY MAX MARIN

E

ven the title of Jeff Rosenstock’s newest solo album, “POST,â€? carries a familiar reminder – it is already too late for anything to be done. Something is irreversibly fucked and the veteran punk rocker will be the ďŹ rst to tell you that along with a lighthearted laugh. The new album is an exhilarating follow-up to Rosenstock’s widely acclaimed “WORRYâ€? in 2016. His songs – from his days with now-defunct Bomb the Music Industry! to his solo albums – have long told the stories of the ďŹ nancially screwed and the socially side-

lined, about struggling to grow up in a stacked-odds world, about ďŹ nding your place. It’s only a mild surprise that his musical career has wound its way into composing for the Cartoon Network show, “Craig and the Creek,â€? about a motley group of kids exploring an adultfree Netherland. We caught up with Rosenstock ahead of his Union Transfer show on Sunday, April 22, to talk about, well, whatever the hell we felt like talking about.

I don’t know of any other punk rockers who’ve made the transition into scoring cartoons. You’ve mentioned the creators were fans of your music with Bomb the Music Industry!, but what’s writing for a kid’s show been like? I kinda think about movies a lot when I’m writing records. A lot of the time that could be the seed for how an album is sequenced. So it’s cool to work on something where it’s inverted like that, to make something that feels big and beautiful and emotionally affecting, but that punk energy is still the engine

for it. At the same time, it’s music on a cartoon, and [laughs] I probably obsess over more than I should when kids are screaming over it. But it’s really fun. Sometimes we’ll get ideas by listening to soundtracks from Princess Mononoke or the Birds or the Last Dragon or weird ‘80s movies. The fact that it’s not supposed to be something people aren’t paying attention to gives me the freedom to do a lot of weird shit.

Your new album does have this Titus Andronicus, cine-punk opera vibe to it. “USA,â€? the opening track, has a half dozen different hooks, but you leave space for each one to find itself and get its feeling out. What did you have in mind when you were structuring the songs? Hearing the [Titus Andronicus’ 2010 album] “The Monitorâ€? for the ďŹ rst time was a revelation for me. It was exciting to hear a record that felt like a real punk record but also had these really long songs that didn’t follow traditional

structures. But I don’t know. I listen to a lot of music, and I’m inspired by a lot of music, but I think that hearing people take chances and have it turn out really successfully – like Titus did with “the Monitorâ€? – that kind of inspires me to take chances on my own and not feel so afraid about it. When we were done making my last record, “WORRY,â€? I joked to our publicist, “Great, I think we just made music for nobody.â€? Because it’s like, there are 10 songs going into each other that don’t have a start or an ending! But the response was good and it kinda made me feel open to fucking try whatever, so “USA,â€? to me, every time I thought about that song I was just thinking about space, how important it is to have space and reection and how hard it is. I was happy that that song ended up having some room to breathe.

You’ve been billed as a musical pioneer and a modern Ian MacKaye and “one of the most important figures in modern punk,â€? and so on and so forth. How do all these labels sit with you? When anybody talks about any aspect of my personality it’s fucking weird. But I don’t know. The people who know me are the people who know me. I try to be honest. But I think I come from the punk heart of ‌ I don’t know ‌ no heroes. I don’t want to be a hero. What it comes down to is I guess that I’m just a music nerd. That’s what gets me through the day. At the very least, according to my one friend, you singlehandedly saved the cowbell on your new record. Will Ferrell and “SNLâ€? ruined the cowbell for everyone, but you saved it and made available to use again for musicians everywhere. [Laughs] The Smith Street Band fucking saved the vibraslap on their last record [2017’s “More Scared of You Than You Are of Meâ€?]

at the end of the ďŹ rst chorus of the song “25.â€? It’s fucking sick. After that, I was just like alright, nothing’s off limits anymore!

So you’ve said you love Philly. How do we look from a lifelong New Yorker DIYers perspective? Well, all my friends move there, so there’s that. [Laughs.] We’re lucky. We get to play the [First Unitarian] Church and it sells out. And now we’re playing fucking Union Transfer! We’ve played there opening for more popular bands, and now we’re headlining. Everything happening in Philly right now is great. It reminds me a bit of Long Island – not musically, but when I was growing up, when it was so vibrant and so many good bands are getting the recognition they deserve. I think everybody in Philly know what’s up.

I think the “oh shit moment is happening for a lot of good bands. But I don’t know how it is in New York. Do you still have DIY venues? I haven’t left my apartment too much in the last couple months, maybe the last year [laughs]. I left to go on on tour and came home. I can tell you that the place I like to get bagels still has good bagels and the place I like to get coffee still has good coffee and the place I like to get pizza still makes pizza. And the trains work about as well as they ever had. It’s sad that a lot of DIY places have been closing. And it’s a bummer. Because I don’t know where there is for me to go anymore, to feel a part of something, but you know, as things close, another wave will undoubtedly step in. That’s New York City. Q This interview has been edited for length and clarity. TWITTER: @MAXMMARIN

Neurotic love story of the summer a necessary depth to a compulsively readable romance. And fair warning: the sex scenes in the book are NC-17 – and not for the fainthearted. I spoke with Broder ahead of her reading at the Rittenhouse Barnes & Noble on May 2 at 7pm to ďŹ nd out more about how she wrote this summer’s steamiest existential tale.

First, I really loved The Pisces. It was such a fast, but impactful read. You really tackle the relationship between a woman and a merman. What drew you to that creature specifically? And how did the novel begin for you? Where did the idea come from?

Warning: The merman love scenes in this book are not for the faint-hearted.

Melissa Broder on her new novel, fantastical infatuation and crushes in the Wawa parking lot BY SARAH ROSE ETTER

I

f you’re looking for an escape from our insane world – and a neurotic love story to read on the beach this summer – you’d

$35,/ 0$<

do well to start with Bryn Mawr-born poet Melissa Broder’s debut novel The Pisces. The novel tells the story of Lucy, a neurotic woman who is falling apart – and in the process, falls in love with Leo, a merman she discovers on the rocks of Venice Beach. Their ill-advised affair blooms alongside Lucy’s attempts to work through her obsession with love in a therapy program that is encouraging her to focus on herself, be more independent and stop choosing terrible partners. If the premise sounds too ighty for you, don’t be so sure. Broder’s prose maintains the same semi-existential and fast-paced voice and tone that made her collection of essays, So Sad Today, so effective. The novel is also interwoven with references to Sappho, adding

I’ve never been a mermaid girl. If you asked me which mythological creature I want to hang out with, I’d say a Pegasus every time. I had zero interest in hanging out with a mermaid. But this book is really about self-annihilation in love, and that dichotomy between fantasy love and real love. In most of the great artworks in the world, we’re told fantasy love is preferable to real love. Look at all of the greatest love stories in art – Romeo & Juliet? Any therapist would have said, “Girl, run! Or Wuthering Heights! A therapist would tell those two to take 90 days off from each other. A therapist would say, “Do Not Text Heathcliffe! And in The Professor and The Siren, once again, a man has a taste of this narcotic love and is completely changed. Look at Odysseus walking off of the back of a ship. Throughout literature, there is no greater symbol of this desire to annihilate oneself in one moment. That’s what makes the moment so intoxicating – the fact that it cannot last forever.

Also, the human/siren relationship can’t exist on land or in the ocean. Somebody has got to die in order for it to carry on. And what is sexier – and what does your therapist warn you against more – than the delicious relationship that is going to destroy your life? I know you left the east coast to move to LA ďŹ ve years ago. Which parts of Venice inspired this book? And do you think you could have written it if you stayed in NYC? I get the sense you needed to leave in order to create this. Venice is a very speciďŹ c place. There are a lot of places that could be other places – but Venice is its own living, breathing character. You have all this tech money coming in,

alongside a very thriving homeless community there that has been there forever. There are also bohemians who have lived there for decades. So it can be very bohemian, too. And I’m really none of those things – I’m not a billionaire. I was there to observe. But I was astounded by the beauty and the grit of Venice. There’s a darkness and a beauty, and a fantasy and fakeness to Venice. I can’t say for sure, but it seems like I couldn’t have written this without being in Venice.

The book reads so smoothly that I was curious what your editing process looked like. How did you revise to make it paced so well? I don’t stop and correct while I’m dictating. I really just give myself the freedom to make mistakes. So my ďŹ rst round of edits is an attempt to translate myself, and ďŹ gure out what I was trying to say while I was dictating. My next round is line edits. That’s when I edit until there’s no voice yelling “This sucks!â€? in my head. After that, my husband is my ďŹ rst set of eyes, then my agent, then another editor, then it goes to publishers, and then multiple rounds of edits after that. There were probably 10 rounds of edits on The Pisces. For as casual as I am when I dictate a draft, I’m a perfectionist as an editor. I really have to parse the edits and feedback I get into pieces so I can tackle them without getting overwhelmed or paralyzed. Otherwise, edits can feel like a vague pile of feedback – and it’s very hard to perform surgery with vague instructions, you know?

You’re originally from Bryn Mawr – and your parents still live here. How does Philly feel to you now, with all this distance? My parents live in the same house in Bryn Mawr where I grew up. My mom runs a store called Pen & Paper out there. So I come back to Philly every few months to see them, and I love Philly. I’d say most of my time in the city when I was young was spent at Zipperhead on South Street between 1995 and 1997, very grunge. I was one of those kids who could not pay attention in class – I was always on another planet. I was a very crushy young woman. I’ve always been a very crushy young woman, often in a Wawa parking lot. Crushes in the Wawa Parking Lot. There’s your headline. Q TWITTER: @SARAHROSEETTER

Finding your name Can Shawn Smith become Philly’s next big emcee on the national stage? BY GREGORY DALE

W

IMAGE COURTESY OF DURRELL HOSPEDALE/MAKE WONDERS PRODUCTIONS LLC

He made a name for himself as Young Savage, but Shawn Smith isn’t hiding who he is anymore. $35,/ 0$<

hen rapper Shawn Smith thought he was sinking, he decided to swim. The Southwest Philly native built a name for himself in his teens under the moniker Young Savage. He started rapping while in grade school, garnering underground attention with his freestyles on YouTube. In 2011, Smith, then 17, caught some serious spotlight after he spit a dizzying 20-minute freestyle on Cosmic Kev’s “Come Up Showâ€? on Power 99. The appearance promised him a steady ascent, but Smith wasn’t satisďŹ ed. Young Savage, he realized later, was a persona he couldn’t believe in. So Smith stopped making music for a short while and sought direction from a higher power. “I felt like I didn’t have any foundation and I didn’t have a sturdy team,â€? he tells Philly Weekly. “I wasn’t being who I really was – I was being what I thought people wanted me to be. Now that I’ve identiďŹ ed who I am, everything has been so perfect. I know the only reason that things went so well is because I found God. Nothing else.â€? Rejuvenated, he ditched the Young Savage moniker and started going by his real name. And his music matured with the transition. Smith began incorporating more introspective themes to his bars. “When I came back, I was such a new person, I couldn’t give my music anything less than the real me or a real perspective,â€? he says. “I ďŹ gured if I was going to give the real me in my music, I had to give them my real name at the same time. My main thing is staying close to the streets and being exactly

who you are. Being real – it’s just all about being real to yourself. I couldn’t preach reality and being real with a name like Young Savage.â€? Now, Smith, 24, is shaking up the hip hop world and is being recognized by a list of notable ďŹ gures in the industry. Last year, he appeared on Sirius XM’s “Sway in the Morning,â€? where he freestyled over Rick Ross’ “Santorini Greeceâ€? instrumental. His impressive wordplay and awless bars gleaned a stamp of approval by the show’s hosts, Sway Calloway and Heather B. His song “Heaven,â€? a single from his 2017 project “Sink or Swim: A Shawn Smith Storyâ€? was also spotlighted on “The Joe Budden Podcast.â€? After the song was featured on the show, the song’s popularity increased tremendously. Smith said Budden later invited him to his home where they talked hip hop and the edgling rapper’s future plans. “Stuff like that people just don’t do for anybody,â€? Smith says. “It could have stopped at them giving me a shout out on their podcast. That was a platform enough. If anybody asks what brought Heaven to the next level it was the ‘Joe Budden Podcast.’ My man Mal played it. Being embraced by the people who’ve done it in a great way before you is always validation for you. I thank them all the time for giving me that validation. I know the work they’ve put in. They wouldn’t just cosign anybody. It says something to me.â€? On the home front, Smith has also been recognized by Meek Mill, Black Thought and Freeway. Though he’s conďŹ dent he can carry the torch as Philly’s next big emcee on the national stage, he explained he’d ultimately like to see the masses at the forefront. “I really just like to see multiple people from the city win at the same time,â€? he says. “It always seemed like it would be one person at a time, and then another 10 years, there would be another person.â€? One of the key driving forces in Smith’s hustle is his ďŹ erce determination to succeed. He often uses his personal mantra, “sink or swimâ€? as motivation. Upon glancing at his Instagram page, you will see the phrase brandished on clothing and written in his captions. More importantly, he wants to use it to inspire his peers to unlock their own destiny. Smith explained that, ultimately, he’d like to use the name for his own record label. “Sink or Swim is giving people a choice,â€? he says. “I got a lot of homies who think they can’t control their destinies. Sink or Swim is letting people know that they have a choice. You can look in the mirror and ultimately tell yourself what your future is going to be like. Anything is possible when you know God. I just wanted to motivate people and make them recognize that those two choices are the only thing that you have in life.â€? Q TWITTER: @DA7THLETTER

SAVAGE LOVE

Crushed DAN SAVAGE I’m a straight male in my 30s. I’ve been with my wife for 12 years. I have had several affairs. Not one-night-stand scenarios, but longer-term connections. I didn’t pursue any of these relationships. Instead, women who knew I was in an “exclusiveâ€? relationship have approached me. These have included what turned into a one-year affair with a single woman, a threeyear affair with a close friend of my wife, a seven-month affair with a married coworker, and now a fairly serious four-months-and-counting relationship with a woman who approached me on Instagram. On the one hand, I do not regret my time with any of these women. On the other hand, I have been deceitful and manipulative for almost my entire adult life. I am a terrible husband in this respect. Also, I’m going to get busted eventually, right? Finding out about this would crush my wife. I love her, we get along great, and the sex is good – if I wasn’t such a lying piece of shit, you could even say we make a pretty good team. We are also very socially and ďŹ nancially entangled. I don’t want to leave, but I suspect I should. And if so, I need help considering an exit strategy. Part of my motivation for writing is that I am particularly attached to the woman I’m having an affair with now, and both of us fantasize about being together openly. I’m a liar, a cheat, a user, and a manipulator – and it just keeps happening. A Seriously Shitty Husband On Losing Everything P.S. I’m expecting you to rip me to shreds. It doesn’t “just keep happening,â€? ASSHOLE, you keep doing it. And these women didn’t “turn intoâ€? one-year, three-year, sevenmonth, and four-months-and-counting affairs on their own. You turned them into affairs by continuing to show up. And while you claim that each of these women pursued you despite knowing you were in an exclusive relationship, it doesn’t sound like you ran from any of them. At best, you broke into (or slowed to) a trot, which allowed each one of these lady predators to overtake you. The ďŹ rst step toward holding yourself accountable for your appalling actions – a close friend of your wife? Really? – is doing away

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

with the passive voice. Don’t ask yourself, “How’d that happen?!?â€? as if the universe were conspiring against you somehow. You weren’t hit by a pussy meteor every time you left the house. You did these things. You had these affairs. You. Zooming out: If all it takes for some rando to get her hands on your otherwise committed cock is to DM you on Instagram, you have no business making monogamous commitments. If you’d sought out a partner who wanted an open relationship – a wide-open one – you could have had concurrent, committed, nonexclusive relationships and avoided being “a liar, a cheat, a user,â€? etc. Seeing as you’re a reader, ASSHOLE, I suspect you knew an honest open relationship was an option – that ethical nonmonogamy was an option – but you didn’t pursue that. And why not? Maybe because you don’t want to be with a woman who is free to sit on other dicks. Or maybe the wrongness and the self-loathing – the whole bad-boy-on-the-rack routine – turn you on. Or maybe you’re the wrong kind of sadist: the un-self-aware emotional sadist. You say you love your wife, but you also say she’d be crushed – destroyed – if she discovered what you’ve been doing. Be honest, ASSHOLE, just this once: Is the destruction of your wife a bug or is it a feature? I suspect the latter. Because cheating on this scale isn’t about succumbing to temptation or reacting to neglect. It’s about the annihilation of your partner – a (hopefully) subconscious desire to punish and destroy someone, anyone, fool enough to love you. The tragedy is how unnecessary your choices have been. There are women out there who aren’t interested in monogamy, there are female cuckolds out there (cuckqueans) who want cheating husbands, and there are masochistic women (and men) out there who get off on the thought of being with a person who would like to crush them. So long as those desires are consciously eroticized, fully compartmentalized, and safely expressed, you could have done everything you wanted, ASSHOLE, without harming anyone. So what do you do now? It seems like you want out, and your wife deďŹ nitely deserves better, so cop to one affair, since copping to all of them would crush her – or so you think. People are often way more resilient than we give them credit for, and convincing ourselves that our partners can’t handle the truth is often a convenient justiďŹ cation for lying to them. But on the off chance it would crush your wife to be told everything, just tell her about Ms. Instagram. That should be enough. P.S. Get your ass into therapy, ASSHOLE.
