Kick off the Science Festival with astronomy & video game music.

N

ow that Philly Tech Week has established Philadelphia for several years running as the city that lets you play gargantuan games of Pong and Tetris on the side of a skyscraper, how do we top that? The Philadelphia Science Festival has an answer: How about turning the Fels Planetarium into a massive game of Galaga?

That’s exactly what’s going to happen at the festival’s big kickoff party Friday night, April 24, when the Franklin Institute hosts a 21-andover “8-Bit Night” of video game-themed fun.

There will be mad-scientist-laboratory pyrotechnics, courtesy of some dueling Tesla coils.

There will be a scientific breakdown of Mario.

There will be Yards Brewing Company’s official Science Festival beer. And there will be gamer music from performers including sci-fi harmonizers Sidewalk Atlas, GameBoy composers Storm Blooper and Chipocrite, and more.

Meanwhile, no fewer than 28 separate locations across the city and the greater Phila-

delphia area will collectively play host to the biggest skywatching party the region has ever seen. Friday is also the festival’s Astronomy Night, and the short list of gathering spots where families and other star lovers are invited to get together and let local astronomers take us on a tour of celestial beauty include the Schuylkill Banks, Laurel Hill Cemetery, the Independence Seaport Museum, Ferko Playground, John Story Jenks Academy and more.

Sweaty, chaotic rock & roll Low Cut Connie’s latest tunes are tearing it up left and right.

O

n the cover of Hi Honey, Low Cut Connie’s triumphant third album, a young woman smokes a cigarette she’s clenching between her big toe and her long toe. Considering how cigarettes are usually smoked, it’s a safe bet she’s drunk—especially as it’s a photo by Anders Petersen, a world-renowned Swedish photographer who famously shot portraits of the whores, pimps, petty criminals, drifters and blue-collar laborers who haunted Munich’s Café Lehmitz.

(Another of those pictures adorns the cover of Tom Waits’s 1985 record, Rain Dogs.)

“The people in his photographs are definitely living weird lives,” says Low Cut Connie’s pianist Adam Weiner, who hunted down both Petersen and the smoker herself for permission to use the photo. “In some cases, really f—ed up lives. But they always have this glimpse of humor, and they’re kind of owning it—and we just felt like he and that photograph had the spirit of the vibe we were going for.”

That vibe? Pure rock & roll abandon. Hi Honey’s endlessly danceable sound—truly timeless rather than retro— is sweaty, chaotic and cathartic. When Weiner and his guitarist/drummer comrade, Dan Finnemore, get together, they make music that’s raucous, playful, and every once in a while, really weird.

“I’m not gonna deny there’s a gender-bendy side to the band,” Weiner says. It’s right there at the opening of the album’s first single, the infectious and joyous “Shake It Little Tina”: “My friends and I / Just to pass the time / Do all the macho things / Sly Stallone and chicken wings / But when I’m by myself / I turn into someone else / I pull down my pants / Put on my heels and dance.”

It’s a song that feels like it’d be an ideal soundtrack to all kinds of times and places: an old bar on Bourbon Street, a backyard barbecue in Memphis, a little whorehouse in Texas, a frenzied frat house in Michigan, or even some of the local dives where Weiner and Finnemore realized they had a good thing going.

Weiner used to perform as The Ladyfingers, and Finnemore was in a band called Swamp Meat. “We thought we’d pool our lack of success,” Weiner quips, but then something surprising happened. Low Cut Connie made a couple records, the amazingly-titled Get Out The Lotion (2011) and Call Me Sylvia (2012), and some very notable critics took notice. When legendary music journalist Robert Christgau and NPR’s Ken Tucker both like you, you know you’re onto something good.

“Christgau… picked our song “Shit Shower & Shave” as one of his songs of the year,” Weiner says, and soon after, when they played a show in Brooklyn, the critic showed up as a fan and offered a haunting benediction: “He came up to me after the show and said ‘That was f—ing great. You’ll never make it.

You’re way over everybody’s head.’” Weiner shakes his head: “Well, that’s encouragement.”

As Weiner sees it, a band’s third record is often a makeit-or-break-it moment. “This time we wanted to work with a

producer and kind of up our game a little bit,” he says. “I think a lot of bands will agree about the third record: If you get to make it, you’re either gonna zoom forward artistically and in your career, or it ain’t happenin’.”

Zoom they will: Hi Honey’s a blast. Low Cut Connie recorded it at Dunham Studios in Brooklyn with renowned Amy Winehouse producer Thomas Brenneck. That’s not the only cool talent joining the band on the record, either: Merrill Garbus of tUnEYaRdS is featured on “Little Queen of New Orleans,” Dean Ween’s on “Dickie’s Bringin Me Down, and Dap-Kings horns are all over the record, along with a trio of outstanding backup singers. But the real crown jewel for Weiner? Vinnie Pastore aka Big Pussy, on “Danny’s Outta Money.”

The band’s name, Weiner says, pays tribute to a seasoned waitress who worked in a South Jersey diner where he grew up.

“She’s not blessed with great beauty, but when you saw her on a Friday or Saturday night, she would wear something low-cut— that was her ‘I’m still gonna show off and have a good time on the weekends.’ Her life was clearly very hard, but I liked that attitude.”

One thing Weiner certainly never expected was to hear detractors call Low Cut Connie’s music misogynist—or, for that matter, “gay,” though he did work the gay-bar piano scene for years in both New York and New Hope. (He’s married to a lady.)

“We kind of get it in the ear both left and right,” Weiner says.

“A record label loved our first record and really wanted to sign us for the second—but the woman that runs the label called me personally and said, ‘I took all the songs around the office, I took a pool of women and men, and the consensus is that you guys are sexist.’ My jaw was on the floor. A week later, we go out on tour… we’re playing in Fort Worth, Texas, and there are a bunch of good old boys there saying, ‘Y’know, y’all are pretty good for a gay band!’”

In any case, he’s very pleased that Low Cut Connie’s fans defy easy categorization. “There’s men and women, gay and straight, black and white, young and old,” he says. “The common denominator is that they’re not afraid to get their hair messed up.” Hey—the way Weiner pounds on that piano, well, you wanna get your hair messed up. That piano’s name, by the way, is Shondra; she got her name from a stripper in Atlanta.

“The piano is kind of central,” Weiner says. “If you think about it, piano isn’t really used that much in music these days. When you hear Shondra, it sounds like it’s got some age.

Pianos are heavy, you don’t move ’em—generally they sit in a place and people gather around. I hope we achieved some degree of that feeling. Like: ‘There’s something happening here, come in.’” Here we come. n

The world of fashion has become something of its own character in film. Fictionalized accounts of fashion models attract everyone from Robert Altman to Ben Stiller, whose Zoolander has blurred the lines between reality and fiction so adroitly that Stiller recently walked the real Valentino runway in character opposite onscreen foil Owen Wilson. Project Runway has gone from an out-of-left-field reality concept to a ubiquitous place for former contestants to re-gather for a battle of the brands. Most recently, in this month’s marvelous Clouds of Sils Maria, Juliette Binoche is dressed by Chanel—and, indeed, the fashion house partially financed the film, which shows Binoche’s character Maria wearing her wardrobe like a psychological mirror, trading in evening gowns for tux jackets as she grows more passionate and determined.

So now, in the new documentary Dior and I, director Frédéric Tcheng knows that we know a little about what fashion appears to be: a floaty, cutthroat business. He’s also smart enough to deliver something very different.

The movie introduces us to creative director Raf Simons, a couture outsider who had been working on minimalist, ready-towear looks at the Jil Sander fashion house.

He’s brought into the Dior fold a mere eight weeks before its next couture show: a veritable pressure cooker that seems like the setup for the sort of high-conflict, behindthe-scenes drama we’ve come to expect.

Thankfully, Dior and I is more interested in the process than in the tension. Tcheng introduces the personable cadre of couturiers at Dior, some of whom have been working there for more than 40 years, and follows the series of complex costume negotiations when the character in question is the House of Dior herself—and her changing psychology requires seemingly impossible feats.

Simons draws from vintage sketches, modern art, and the natural world to narrow a sea of possibilities into a handful of stunners, each of which is chosen by a couturier with all the flourish of a blind date. The pressure is clearly on Simons,

whose awful time crunch is compounded by the pressure to fit his aesthetic into the deeply feminine Dior brand—a dichotomy highlighted by excerpts from Dior’s own biography, in which he talks about designer and man as two separate entities.

And though there’s a level of assumed knowledge that means those in the know will get even more from it, Dior and I builds its own visual glossary. Vogue subscriber or not, it’s clear the amount of work that goes into a single gown, and that a successful outfit relies on several things: passion for the piece, quality of material, skilled execution, and enough underpinnings to make it all move the way it’s supposed to. The film smartly combines those same elements.

Simons is a reserved, sometimes awkward subject, but rather than linger on either his stress or his genius, Tcheng’s camera captures the no-less-thrilling feeling of a house of people who love their work, coming together under a vision while leaving their own marks in the turn of a seam or the placement of a bead. The touch of melancholy when the workers hand off their toiles for modification feels like both a part of a careful story and a moment of real feeling amid the many presentations.

Fashion has a life of its own—the business of fashion is to make itself a living thing that changes with the seasons to keep itself young and desirable—but there’s something charming in seeing people gather to sew beads overnight onto a dress we never even see. It’s a part of Dior; that’s enough for everyone who brings a gown to life, and in Dior and I, it’s enough for us, too. n

hen I think about my future, I sometimes think about marriage.

That’s new. Before last year, a lot of gay people, myself included, never gave it serious thought, because it wasn’t legally possible in our state. And the idea of doing it unofficially—having some Internet minister or pagan priestess perform a pretty but toothless “commitment ceremony” while exchanging “love rings” with another man— never appealed to me, frankly.

Then, after a federal ruling in May 2014, same-sex marriage became legal in Pennsylvania. Suddenly, my life was granted legitimacy by the state. Society hasn’t become gay; now it simply recognizes my right to exist fully and equally alongside heterosexuals. In terms of straight and gay Americans, our judiciary has declared that our laws should embody the principle of “live and let live.”

Subsequently, for this gay man, the amazing race to settle down started—not with a starting pistol, but with the strike of a gavel.

It’s amazing how one judge’s ruling changed the entire game of life for me. Today, I do spend some time thinking about what I want in terms of actual marriage. For instance: what kind of husband I want. What kind of husband I want to be. What kind of ceremony I might have if I meet that special guy. Sometimes, I daydream for an inordinate amount of time, wondering if my wedding will be earthy and humble in Fairmount Park or, perhaps, dripping with ostentatious pretense in the Fairmount Water Works.

Among the things I wonder, you’ll note, I have never—not once!—wondered whether former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) would make an appearance at my hypothetical wedding.

On the other hand, Santorum, along with a bevy of other bigots, seems to give an unsettling amount of thought to the possibility that I might send him an invitation.

Last week, Santorum declared to Hugh Hewitt on talk radio that, if someone invited him to a gay wedding, he would not attend. “That would be something that would be a violation of my faith,” Santorum said. “I would love them and support them, but I would not participate in that ceremony.”

Clearly, Santorum is well in tune with what gay couples across the nation are thinking.

After all, whenever I’m in a gay bar, my fellow homosexuals cannot stop but mention how much they appreciate Santorum’s continued

presence in American politics. (Not really. In 2015, Rick Santorum is so unpopular outside his tight little base, so toxic, that he hasn’t held public office in literally years.)

Still, he’s not alone this spring in declaring his intent to check “no” on that hypothetical RSVP card. There was Memories Pizza in Indiana, of course, who announced that they would not cater a gay wedding—surely a great disappointment to the gaggle of gays who’d long hoped they’d someday get to chow down on some cheese slices while a string ensemble serenaded them with Pachelbel’s Canon.

And last week, apparently not even wanting to contribute to gay people’s ability to drive to their wedding—or anywhere else—some auto mechanic in Michigan flatly declared on Facebook: “I would not hesitate to refuse service to an openly gay person or persons.” This clearly very happy, well-adjusted man went on to say that being gay “is wrong, period.”

I’d like to point something out.

First, accepting someone’s money for services rendered is not an endorsement of their life choices—it’s the basic functioning of capitalism, in which we exchange cash for goods, like pizza, and services, like auto repair. When a merchant accepts cash, that person is endorsing nothing but that exchange. The only thing deeper than that that might be implied is simply a commitment to capitalism itself.

Likewise: Attending a wedding neither requires nor implies an endorsement of that couple’s love. Haven’t we all been to weddings where we were pretty sure either the bride or groom were making an insanely wrongheaded decision? Hell, I’ve done over/under bets with friends on when the “happy couple” would get divorced. In other words, when I’m invited to a wedding, I sometimes go to celebrate love but always go to eat the free cake.

I think it’s bizarre that these ultra-religious conservatives spend so much time thinking about how they intend to exclude me from every part of society. But more to the point, I think it’s unnecessary and hurtful that they feel compelled to publicly declare their discomfort with gayness. If you have nothing nice to say, why don’t you keep your mouth shut?

Trust me when I say that gay people are not clamoring to get our cars fixed by a homophobe, cater our weddings with pizza, or invite Rick Santorum to our parties.

All we want is equality under the law. If you can’t get behind equality, at least get out of the way. n

Take back the night Philly women and men refuse to yield to street harassment.

O

ne night in 1975, microbiologist Susan Alexander Speeth was walking alone to her Philadelphia home.

A mere block from her destination, she was brutally stabbed to death by an unknown assailant.

As authorities throughout history have often done in response to violence, many suggested women stay indoors after dark to avoid danger. But a vocal collection of Philadelphians were having none of it. The streets are not owned by the predators, they argued, and it was time to assert the right to move freely throughout our city. It was time to take back the night.

In response to Speeth’s death, the first documented Take Back the Night event was organized in October of 1975. It built from the progress of American activists galvanized by the serial murders of women of color, as well as European councils reacting to an epidemic of rape. Rather than making it women’s problem to avoid being assaulted, the protests outlined the need for a fundamental change in society. After four decades of continued momentum, Take Back the Night is still dedicated to eliminating sexual and domestic violence in all forms.

Two, four, six, eight No more violence! No more hate!

While walking past the freshmen dorms, we heard another set of chants coming from a second story window. The boys—they might legally have been men, but c’mon now—shouted down some uncreative nonsense about sluts and whores.

I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect example of how violence against women isn’t just personal drama, but a symptom of a larger cultural sickness. Seeing us organized

End it, end it—end the silence.

Stop it, stop it—stop the violence.

This year, the Take Back the Night Foundation has joined forces with Temple University for an event at 7 p.m. Thurs., April 30 at the campus’s Bell Tower. The evening will include a charity walk, inspiring speakers and a candlelight vigil; see details at ph.ly/TBTN2015.

It’s perfectly practical to tell people to watch out and avoid being victimized. And never leaving your house and refusing to speak to strangers might keep you a little more secure. But it’s a waste of a life in a city full of wonderful people, cool opportunities and general brilliance. The predators don’t own this place unless we hand it over. Every one of us has the right to freely move about without fear and every one of us has a role to play in making Philly the friendly and safe place it can be. It’s your city; take it back. n

I’m an American woman living abroad and have started a relationship with a wonderful man from a Middle Eastern country. He is a moderate Muslim, but he grew up in a strict conservative family and country. He’s 25 and has never even held hands with a woman. He is excited to change this now that he has broken away from his family. I have had many partners, both men and women, and am quite sexually experienced.

Do you have advice on how to best go about taking a man’s virginity? —Going To Be His First Be gentle. Also, make it clear beforehand that you’re his girlfriend and not his counselor or spiritual adviser. If he’s still struggling with the sex-negative, woman-phobic zap that his upbringing (and a medieval version of his faith) put on his head, he needs to work through that crap before he gets naked with you. He may have some sort of post-climax meltdown or crisis—like many repressed gay dudes have the first time they have sex with a man—and you’ll be kind and understanding, of course, but you won’t allow him to lay responsibility for the choice he made on you. As for the sex itself…

Take the pressure off him by letting him know that this—his first time, your first time together—is about pleasure and connection, not about performance and mastery. It was in college that I attended my first TBTN event, created in collaboration with the Clothesline Project, a national movement that gives opportunities to survivors to share their stories. I walked the big open space in front of the Student Union, reading the t-shirts pinned to the clotheslines: narratives of resilient women who refused to be silenced by abuse. Rather than being shamed about having been victimized, these women bravely talked about their experience in detail. Embarrassment should lie entirely with the perpetrators and a culture that allows their toxicity to develop and flourish.

That evening, I joined a swelling crowd of activists, traversing the streets around campus, chanting in unison.

against abuse, these boys simply reiterated the underlying beliefs of our society: that independent women are immoral and anything bad that happens to them is their own doing. Rape is the consequence of a woman having too much freedom, sexual liberation is something to be derided and reigned in through punishment.

This outlook is proven by the horrifyingly low conviction rate of sexual assailants and the fact they can continue to work at their high profile, lucrative careers (cough NFL cough) while victims are publicly flogged.

People who wouldn’t think twice about executing a shooting suspect feel the need to point out that accused rapists are innocent until proven guilty in a court. Folks who have been robbed are generally given empathy, while battered partners are purported to have done something to warrant their abuse.

This cultural sickness is also apparent when someone argues that campus rape rates might not be exactly 1 in 4 and that Rolling Stone article was flawed, so therefore rape culture is a myth—ignoring that rape is far more likely to happen to women who can’t access college. It’s also forgetting that one of the most targeted demographics for sexual assault are young boys of color, because it’s even less likely their voices will be heard. Violence is but one means through which social hierarchies are maintained.
