The days of alcohol fueled festivals at the Piazza are truly a thing of the past.

For a Common Good Unveiling of uncommon event schedule solidifies new look for Schmidtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Commons

ut with the bro, in with the new.

Although itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not written on a white board anywhere, that is the mantra behind the events and planning team of Schmidtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Commons in Northern Liberties. The Commons, perhaps better known â&#x20AC;&#x201C; although not affectionately by some â&#x20AC;&#x201C; as the Piazza, underwent its ofďŹ cial rebranding last summer with a name change and new ownership, but this year is when months of planning are being put into action, and, so far, with sound results.

In charge of ensuring the right events ďŹ nd the Commons is Krystal Souvanlasy, who accepted the task last April to be the eyes, ears and braintrust of the larger comprised and New Yorkbased Kushner Companies. Kushner, owned by Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner, purchased the grounds from Philly real estate magnate Bart Blatstein.

Speak to Souvanlasy for ďŹ ve seconds, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s apparent her aspirations for changing the image for the better is her No. 1 goal. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are trying to get away from the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;bro atmosphereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; that happens here,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? Souvanlasy said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There was a stigma, and I think it stemmed from the fact that [the then Piazza] was an upand-coming area built in 2009 and it really was 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

the only epicenter of things happening in the area.

With that, there were some challenges in an effort to attract people to the area, and I think you saw a lot of those challenges. Now with new ownership, we pulled back on the events, assessed what we wanted to do, who we wanted to attract â&#x20AC;Ś Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m really trying to organize events that have themes to them and that also keep our businesses happy in order for them to thrive.â&#x20AC;?

One person taking notice of Souvanlasyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s efforts and the efforts of this new collective is Northern Liberties Neighborhood Association president Matt Ruben. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Piazza always has been a challenge to program and activate because a real European piazza is surrounded by a dense urban grid on all four sides. It thrives from people walking through it, day and night, from all directions,â&#x20AC;? Ruben said via email. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Piazza at Schmidtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Commons has that kind of direct access from only one or two sides. So it always has had to be more of a destination. The previous owners did all they could to activate the space, but the balance eventually tilted too much toward events driven by alcohol and very loud music.â&#x20AC;?

It was a pairing Ruben said caused a major nuisance in the form of noise complaints, intoxicated visitors and a trafďŹ c logjam down 2nd St., NoLibsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; main strip. Perhaps most disheartening,

however, is Ruben noted that these events did very little in the form of foot trafďŹ c to the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s small businesses and shops.

But the latest event program is far less alcoholsoaked and more immersed in diversity, and is tailor-made for a section of the city that arguably is the most rapidly expanding, rife with young professionals who are becoming ďŹ rst-time homebuyers and starting families.

On April 15, Schmidtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Commons introduced its ďŹ rst â&#x20AC;&#x153;Makers Marketâ&#x20AC;? that featured goods and crafts from local businesses and shops in addition to a marketplace, which featured an alcohol farmers market called Local Libations, giving patrons a chance to sample and purchase craft brews and spirits from local distilleries and breweries. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of many events that can run a prospective promoter or organizer anywhere from $3,000-$8,000 for daily use of the Piazzaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 80,000 square foot expanse. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When people have access to mass quantities of alcohol and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re unmonitored, sometimes bad things happen,â&#x20AC;? Souvanlasy said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This was the case here just like itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the case with [other spots around] the city. Look, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not one to be a party pooper, but thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a certain line where you just canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have something be a free-for-all.

So now whenever someone asks us if they can rent out a space in the Piazza, my ďŹ rst question to them is have you ever done this before? Their answer is a pretty big indicator if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to host or if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just not a good ďŹ t for what weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trying to build.â&#x20AC;?

Souvanlasy believes the Commonsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; unique brand of entertainment will shed a brighter spotlight on the businesses in and around the Commons. Companies such as WeWork continue to drive business to the area during the day and it has been a highlight of the Commonsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; revitalization. Now, people stay after work to savor the craft beers at Urban Village and try the fare at Apricot Stone and El Camino â&#x20AC;&#x201C; restaurants that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to cater to wasted-face consumers to make a buck. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The current on-site team has done a very good job of bringing in a variety of events that can appeal to a wide variety of different people,â&#x20AC;?

Ruben said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With WeWork bringing hundreds of people during the days, and a large brewpub opening soon, I think the biggest challenge now is overcoming the leftover image of the Piazza from the earlier days of alcohol-fueled concerts, and from the transition period when not much was going on. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a subtle but difďŹ cult task of getting more people to come out again and experience whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happening now. They have to reach critical mass to get the all-important word of mouth. They are not quite there yet, but they are getting there, and they are trying as hard as anyone possibly could.â&#x20AC;? This week, we bring you the State of the City from a birdâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s-eye view. The Pew Charitable Trusts has released its ninth annual report of the same name, a wide-ranging portrait of Philadelphia by the numbers, with plenty of indicators about where the city is heading, its accomplishments, its challenges, and how it compares to other big cities across the country.

Diversity in population? Check. In business? Not by a long shot. Last year, the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s white population made up about 35 percent of its population and yet comprised 78 percent of the business owners.

The Asian population, at about 7 percent of the city, owned 10 percent of its businesses. Meanwhile, African Americans are the largest demographic in Philly at 41 percent of the population, and yet just 2.4 percent of businesses were blackowned in 2016.

The labor force, or lack thereof Let this sink in: 31 percent of Philadelphians are either unemployed or not currently looking for work, according to Pewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s data. We have the fourth most sluggish labor force among comparable big cities across the country. This needs to be fixed, Philly.

as ever Thumbs up Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s growing immigrant body is often credited for reversing decades of population decline. There were about 205,339 foreign-born Philadelphians last year, which is roughly 13 percent of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s total population. All told, 43 percent of these immigrants are Asian by birth, with Chinese-born immigrants being the largest group. According to Pewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s research, 30 percent of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s immigrants come from North or South America, 17 percent from Europe, and 10 percent from Africa.

Despite unemploymentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rise since the 2008 recession, the job market has been steadily growing in the City of Brotherly Love. In fact, according to Pewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s data, Philly outperformed the country as a whole with 2.2 percent job growth, maintaining roughly 699,600 jobs in 2016. The biggest job gains over the last decade have been in the hospitality, education and medical sectors.

Manufacturing, meanwhile, has seen the biggest declines.

Segregation is alive Despite the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s growing diversity, Philadelphians are still living largely along color lines. There are 371 census tracts in the city, which are used to measure demographic data. In 84 percent of those tracts, one race group or another represents the majority of the population. This means that just 58 tracts â&#x20AC;&#x201D; 16 percent of the city â&#x20AC;&#x201D; are racially integrated. Props to the Lower Northeast for being the most diverse.

What keeps Philly up at night?

Half of Philly thinks weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re on the right track

One of Pewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more baffling findings comes from a poll conducted in August of last year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the biggest problem facing Philadelphia?â&#x20AC;? pollsters asked. A staggering 44 percent of respondents said public safety â&#x20AC;&#x201D; up from 23 percent the year before.

What happened to trigger anxiety about crime, fires, and motor vehicle accidents that changed perceptions about Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s safety? On paper, it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make sense. In 2016, major and violent crimes were at their lowest levels since the 1970s, according to Pew. 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

In that same August 2016 poll, Pew also asked Philadelphians where they thought the city was heading â&#x20AC;&#x201D; in the right direction, or on the wrong track? Pew researchers found that â&#x20AC;&#x153;residents were as upbeat about where they thought the city was headed as at any time in the history of the poll, which started in 2009.â&#x20AC;? About 50 percent of those polled said they thought the city was going places; 34 percent said weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doomed. $35,/

Weed arrests are way down, except at the handoff Inside the state of marijuana law enforcement in Philly

hiladelphia Police are making exponentially fewer arrests for marijuana possession, but the war on illegal dealing remains alive and well at a time when Pennsylvania ofďŹ cials are gearing up to issue licenses for weed dispensaries and grow facilities across the state.

For smokers, the difference is night and day since Philadelphia ofďŹ cials decriminalized marijuana possession three years ago.

In 2013, the year prior to decrim, city police arrested 3,773 people for having crop on them, according to data from the PA Uniform Crime Reporting System. That ďŹ gure dropped to just 594 last year. This data includes those who were arrested for possession, as well as those caught in $35,/

the act of purchasing. Juvenile arrests for possession have also dropped by more than 75 percent in the last three years. Nonetheless, as Philly 420 reported, there remains a striking racial disparity in those who are incarcerated for marijuana-related offenses.

Meanwhile, arrests for manufacturing and selling weed have declined at a far slower rate. UCR data shows 2,130 arrests for dealing-related charges in 2013, which dipped to 1,444 in 2016. UCR data from last year remains incomplete and subject to change.

Police enforcement priorities have not changed since the decriminalization ordinances for possession went into effect. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I mean weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re still ďŹ ghting the good ďŹ ght on drugs,â&#x20AC;? Capt. Sekou Kinebrew, commanding of-

ďŹ cer of PPD public affairs, told PW. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To say that thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a deliberate surge to speciďŹ cally target marijuana [dealing] would be a little bit of an overstatement.

Is there a deliberate ďŹ ght against drug sales and narcotics activity? That would be fair to say.â&#x20AC;?

Moreover, Philadelphia Police Department data indicates that a signiďŹ cant percentage of ongoing possession arrests occur during the act of buying.

Charges against active buyers are the only weed enforcement metric to increase in the last two years. (The PPD would not supply data for this charge prior to 2015.)

In 2015, police cuffed 334 people in the act of the purchase. Last year, they charged 441 people for the same offense, which appears striking against the total 558 arrests for simple possession.

These ďŹ gures may overlap, as police can charge buyers simultaneously for the purchase and the act of possession.

In court, however, buyers are most often just charged with possession, according to the District Attorneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s OfďŹ ce.

Kinebrew said that many arrests for marijuana dealing are driven by resident complaints. He also acknowledged that the PPD Narcotics Bureau still conducts stings to bust and book marijuana dealers, at which time buyers are frequently booked as well.

In the days since decrim, ofďŹ cers who ďŹ nd marijuana on a person â&#x20AC;&#x201D; assuming that the possession is their highest offense â&#x20AC;&#x201D; more often give a citation.

Those citations skyrocketed from 1,388 in 2015 to 2,406 last year, according to the OfďŹ ce of Administrative Review.

Why book these buyers at all, rather than give them citations like the other arrests for marijuana possession? â&#x20AC;&#x153;The buyer gets processed because the immediate nexus between them and the conspiratorial act with the felon is right in front of you,â&#x20AC;? Kinebrew said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In other words, we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know the circumstances by which someone whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in possession of marijuana got into possession of it. Maybe someone gave it to them. Maybe they bought it. Maybe they found it their parentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; dresser drawer.â&#x20AC;?

Buyer arrests also assist in prosecution of dealers by establishing the two conspirators in the sale, a spokesperson for the DAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ce said. Q

The Pot Provider Confessions of a Center City cannabis dealer

he ďŹ rst thing â&#x20AC;&#x153;JJâ&#x20AC;? does is lay out some ground rules. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I need your business card; I need to know who this is for and where I can read it when it comes out,â&#x20AC;? he says, stone faced. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I know [that] I know you thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the only reason why Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m talking to you, but this is my job, cuz.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not about to have some story in the newspaper fuck with my bread or get me locked up.â&#x20AC;?

After a promise not to divulge who he is and handing over my card, JJ, the 31-year-old marijuana dealer from a neighborhood just outside Center City, proceeds to tell me the inner workings of his $52k a year side hustle.

The ďŹ rst thing to know about â&#x20AC;&#x153;JJâ&#x20AC;? is that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d never know by looking at him that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a major distributor of marijuana. He lives with a roommate in an apartment, drives a modest, late-model sedan and by day dutifully heads to his regular 9-5 gig in Center City as a ďŹ nancial consultant selling insurance. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s commission based, but JJ says itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good at, claiming he made more than $65k last year â&#x20AC;&#x201C; after taxes. $35,/

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s boring, but the people that are buying it are old folks trying to secure a little something before they roll out,â&#x20AC;? JJ said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It tends to be an easy sale because you can prey on their fear of the unknown and upsell the shit out of them.

They hang up the phone or leave our ofďŹ ce feeling secure, but all Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m thinking of is that commission check.â&#x20AC;?

Perhaps a sales mentality is what makes JJ so successful. That and his low proďŹ le. He doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t carry a â&#x20AC;&#x153;burner phoneâ&#x20AC;? like you see in the movies, his cannabis customers call his actual number, the same one heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s had for years. And call they do. During the hourlong sit down with me his cell phone buzzed a handful of times, some legitimate calls but the bulk were clients looking to cop.

The people calling him arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t what youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d readily expect to be burnouts either. JJ says many of these people work in Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vast ďŹ ne dining scene. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re servers, cooks, bartenders. Contacts he obtained through working for almost two years at a popular Center City restaurant.

But also through word of mouth from people who enjoy his merchandise.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;My shit is the bomb; Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not risking my future for no fucking schwag, cuz,â&#x20AC;? JJ tells me. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People in the industry get down and they know quality. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re around ďŹ ne dining, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking at good shit all day. You know the difference between top shelf whisky and that Heaven Hill bullshit. The same thing applies here. So when they cop from me, they know Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m supplying them with that good.â&#x20AC;?

But JJâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clientele isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mutually exclusive, and when they come over they usually have a story to tell. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Man, people come through and in the time Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m weighing out their weed, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re telling me their life story,â&#x20AC;? laughed JJ. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have this mom who comes through, sexy as fuck, but always complaining about her husband and her spoiled little private school kids. I feel like her shrink whenever she picks up and her prescription to carry on with her life is my bud.â&#x20AC;?

But he doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t pick up. He never does when heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s running low. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have anything right now,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m running up to supply later and then itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s on like Donkey Kong, cuz.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Running upâ&#x20AC;? is a trip to a Bucks County town to purchase â&#x20AC;&#x153;weight,â&#x20AC;? according to JJ, showing me a box of blue Ziploc freezer bags that in a few hours he claims heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll head back to Philly with, full of dank, multicolored buds ready for purchase. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Actually, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m more nervous about doing this when Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m out than when I have shit on me,â&#x20AC;? said JJ. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re way more vulnerable when you have to go get the shit and bring it home. My [supplier] deals only in cash, he donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take no checks so Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m nervous going there. Even though Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been collecting from the same dudes, you just never know. To them, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m small potatoes, but I make them enough money where they still fuck with me. But I gotta drive with all that [money] and then drive home with all that green. And then divvy up whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s coming home with me and what heads to the stash.â&#x20AC;?

Once he gets it and he resumes taking calls, JJ said the calls donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop. On a weekend after shelling out close to $5k for his supply, JJ claims heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll sell enough to make almost a third of that money back. By the time it runs out? As the voice to legalize marijuana â&#x20AC;&#x201C; at least medicinally â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in Pennsylvania grows louder, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a wonder if small time guys like JJ will be phased out. According to a recent market research report, illegal marijuana sales dropped three percent in 2016 in both the United States and Canada.

For now, JJ feels secure that his clientele isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t going anywhere.

The success of subway giants Too Many Zooz will be on display next month at the Foundry at the Fillmore.

ou can hear them even before you walk down the stairs.

For the past four years, the sound of saxophones, trumpets and percussion has ďŹ&#x201A;ooded subways up and down the East Coast, speciďŹ cally in New York City. The trio of Leo Pellegrino (saxophone), Matt Doe (trumpet) and the man only known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;King of Sludgeâ&#x20AC;? (percussion) has caught the eye of musicians such as Billy Idol and Beyonce, playing alongside the latter during her much talked about performance at the Country Music Awards in March.

In advance of their headline show at the Foundry at the Fillmore (29 E. Allen St.) on May 12, PW caught up with Leo P. and discussed subway life, hanging with Queen B. and sticking true to (underground) roots.

How did Too Many Zooz even come about?

We started because the King of Sludge and I met in the subway playing in different bands, and we started playing together, and then Matt Doe, who is our trumpet player was just hanging out at my house in Harlem at the time, and I asked him to play with us.

It was random, but when we all played together it just felt really good. People started really liking us and our [subway] perfor $35,/

mances and we just started to gain popularity and pick up.

Why was playing in the subway the obvious choice for Too Many Zooz to start your below grassroots rise to fame?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the best place to play that I can think of really. You get the looks from high society wondering why youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re playing down here, but think about it: there are thousands of people who go through there every day in and out, so the exposure is incredible.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s people from all different ages, different countries and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a lot of people who work in New York City that are really important in the music industry. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not really a strategic move, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just where made the most sense. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a good way to make money and a way for me to keep my head above water at the time.

Speaking of exposure, getting a chance to play alongside Beyonce [at the CMAs] has to be the icing on the cake. What was that like?

It was awesome and incredible. Just a chance to have the rehearsals we did on a professional sound stage was incredible. Everything was really professional and a really great experience. [Beyonce] was really nice; we really didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get a chance to speak to her much, but when we did I think I was sur-

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been in and out of Philly a lot but have never played there. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m looking forward to it. Actually my brother and my best friend from high school live in Philly. My brother lives in East Falls and my buddy lives in South Philly somewhere, so having them both come check us out is something that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m looking forward to.

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a big takeaway of the success Too Many Zooz has had in a short time?

I think the one big takeaway for me is just how important it is to do your own thing and be original. Come up with your own and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t try to copy because the originality aspect of whatever youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing is so important. We were always ourselves the entire time, we didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t change even with the success and I think being that authentic has been really important to who we are and our music too.

As marijuana becomes more mainstream and less counterculture, more people are speaking out not just about its advantageous purpose. This week, PW partnered with pro-cannabis website Elevated Nation to highlight three people ďŹ ghting hard behind the scenes to make the legalization of medical marijuana a reality in Pennsylvania.

I

f you want to grow marijuana, especially indoors, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to use a hell of a lot of energy. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exactly how attorney Bridget Hill-Zayat got into the practice of cannabis law. She was working as an energy attorney and had a client interested in getting into medical cannabis. As she explains, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rather than ďŹ nding a new law ďŹ rm, he asked me to help him. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s another regulated commodity.â&#x20AC;?

Hill-Zayat recently helped two clients apply for grower/processor $35,/

and dispensary licenses under Pennsylvaniaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s medical marijuana law.

She also formerly helped State Sen. Daylin Leach develop standards for cannabis regulations in PA. The Center City-based attorney also testiďŹ ed before Philadelphia City Council on how the city can increase energy efďŹ ciency to help its medical cannabis market.

A big portion of the costs of doing business are energy related,â&#x20AC;?

Hill-Zayat, 37, told Elevated Nation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Understanding how regulations work is also helpful. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a similar legal process. There are rulemaking procedures, regulations, maintaining application status,â&#x20AC;? to account for.

While friends and family and colleagues have been supportive of the lawyerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s focus on cannabis over the past two years, her former employer didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want any part of it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was with another law ďŹ rm and they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to put their name on any of the work. She didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to sully her name with the subject matter,â&#x20AC;? Hill-Zayat recalls with a laugh. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an important industry that will help a lot of people. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I really enjoy what I do and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m interested in it,â&#x20AC;? says Hill-Zayat, who, like many people working in the legal or medical cannabis landscape, knew a family member who was sick and who found relief from medical marijuana. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of people have personal stories. You stop having this picture of cannabis as a hippie drug where people want to space out and you realize how much it can help people.â&#x20AC;?

Hill-Zayat has been pleasantly surprised by the variety of people who support medical marijuana.

She was glad when Republican State Sen. Mike Folmer, took such an active role in helping to pass the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s medical marijuana bill. Folmer, who represents Lebanon, York, and Dauphin counties, is a cancer survivor. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The equalizing force is cancer. It makes surprising bedfellows,â&#x20AC;? HillZayat says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People are working across the aisle, which is great. The majority of population supports legalization in some form.â&#x20AC;? tephanie Thomas may have had a personal interest in cannabis, but she never planned to tell her boss that. But she recalls one day in 2004, while working in commercial real estate for Metro Market Management, her boss Tony DeAngelo said, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll never believe what my sons are gonna do. They live in California and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re gonna sell pot,â&#x20AC;? Thomas said. DeAngeloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sons Steve and Andrew have since become quite successful with Oakland cannabis dispensary Harborside Health Center.

Thomas began â&#x20AC;&#x153;helping to start a retail store. This was just another retail tenant,â&#x20AC;? she explained. "I wrote their ďŹ rst payroll spreadsheet, helped them with things that a start-up needs,â&#x20AC;? Thomas said of Philadelphia native Steve DeAngelo and his brother Andrewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s company.

After many years of helping Harborside, Thomas traveled to California in 2015 to see their facility and attend a cannabis conference where she met national organizers behind WomenGROW, a group devoted to helping women and minorities become leaders in the cannabis industry. She asked if WomenGROW had a Philadelphia chapter and when she heard they did not she founded the chapter.

Now WomenGROW Philadelphia holds monthly networking meetings to â&#x20AC;&#x153;connect, educate and empowerâ&#x20AC;? women and people of color to get involved in cannabis industry. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have had speakers about activism, getting funding, the politics of cannabis,â&#x20AC;? explains Thomas, 40. Philadelphia Science Festival The Philly Science Festival is back with more interactive programs than ever before. Inviting attendees to partake and be inspired by a variety of activities geared to inspire with experiments meant to demonstrate the role and importance science has in everything we do.

Offering an array of interactive and unique activities designed to highlight the importance of science within our everyday lives. In previous years, the festival has surpassed expectation, now itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s taking place at several local locations with science institutions playing host across the city, and even state lines into New Jersey. New to the programming list this year, the Be a Scientist program has invited attendees into the labs of some of the most highly trained ecologists, marine biologists, paleontologists in surrounding areas. So that they may open their hospital doors, universities and museums to the public for one day only. For the New Jersey location of Be a Scientist at Rowan Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Edleman Fossil Park, people can dig along actual scientists for millions and millions of year old fossils, which is not even open to the public yet.

Guests of all ages are encouraged to be inspired by a variety of activities, experiments and demonstrations all while learning from local experts and scientists from across the region. There are countless family-friendly interactive programs as well as several planned for guests twenty-one and up. Aerial banner to blast city over teachersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; contract during NFL Draft Central High School teacher George Bezanis is getting more creative in drawing attention to the fact that the city has not had a contract with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers in more than four years.

In February, it was a GoFundMe campaign to raise $5,000 for a billboard along the I-95 corridor, with the intention of shaming city ofďŹ cials as they head into budget season. That billboard, which was up for more than a month, read: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Welcome to Philadelphia, where we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t value our public school children. 5+ years without a raise for our teachers.â&#x20AC;?

Now, Bezanis has launched a $2,000 fundraising campaign to commission an airplane to ďŹ&#x201A;y one of the following messages down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway during the upcoming NFL Draft on Thursday, April 27:

Bezanis also noted in a press release that the School District of Philadelphia recently received a $325 million commitment for the next ďŹ ve years, but has â&#x20AC;&#x153;yet to settle a collective bargaining agreement that would provide stability and contractually guaranteed resources for over 100,000 Philadelphia students.â&#x20AC;?

If a contract is reached before the NFL Draft date, Bezanis, who is acting on his own without PFTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ cial support, said heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll call off the airplane banner. Since the campaign launched Saturday, it has raised more than $700.

Responding to the campaign, Kenney spokesperson Lauren Hitt said that the administration has been actively trying to achieve a contract between the District and PFT since the mayor took ofďŹ ce in 2016. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They have another sit-down scheduled imminently,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Philly Effectâ&#x20AC;? is an ongoing series about the impact Philadelphia has made on the lives of its residents â&#x20AC;&#x201C; for better or worse. This week, we bring you the city through the eyes of 37-year-old comedian, indy media producer, and notable cannabis activist N.A. Poe. The Upper Darby native moved to the city in his 20s.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where he found his calling, and by proxy, his community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was 28 and living in my fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s basement when Occupy Philadelphia broke out at City Hall. I grabbed a tent, went up there with a ďŹ&#x201A;ipcam, and ended up meeting a bunch of people who worked in marijuana reform and far-left activism. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pretty much where my career started.

In May 2013, I was arrested fairly violently by federal authorities at the Liberty Bell during our Smoke Down Prohibition protest. I spent ďŹ ve days in federal lockup.

After I got out of jail, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll never forget: I walked out and there was my mom and about 50 or 60 other people waiting for me. And I really think that was the moment that we clicked as a community and clicked as a movement.

It was a harrowing experience for me.

I spent some time on federal probation. I was tied up with the feds for almost two years, but it really was the spark that led to change in Philadelphia. Within a year of that, we decriminalized marijuana. You could always smoke a joint in Rittenhouse Square, but we looked at the numbers and realized that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re arresting so many people for pot. We decided to present those numbers to then-Councilman Jim Kenney who was interested in the idea of decriminalizing pot, and once we talked to him a few times, it essentially got fast-tracked.

Since then, instead of just huddling around and saying â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;hey, potâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decriminalized, this is great,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve actually taken the next steps forward to apply cannabis culture in Philadelphia, which has been thriving ever since.

We have parties. We have popup weed gardens. We do protests and marches.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re active politically. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re throwing parties where weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re collecting socks and toiletries for the homeless. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve done toy drives. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve done back-to-school drives.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a combination of things that I believe has led to a certain degree of cannabis freedom here in Philadelphia and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s al-

lowed a culture to sprout up.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re kind of using this model that the LGBTQ community has used, which says â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;look, we are a community.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; If you attack our community, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re attacking our culture. And I think Philadelphia has been a very unique place to do that. Because we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have legal pot. What we have is decriminalization and what weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve created is a type of relationship that has allowed the authorities to realize that pot isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a negative thing anymore.

The city has kind of responded to us in a unique way, where they have kind of accepted cannabis culture in Philadelphia before the legalization of cannabis has come here. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve done our best to be respectful of the police. We used to do these things called the â&#x20AC;&#x153;donut summitsâ&#x20AC;? where weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d go meet police brass before weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d go do a protest or a march. We created this relationship where they know who we are and we know who they are, and that kind of relationship has helped make pot culture more benign to them.

Politically, more than any other subset of culture, we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be divided and ruled by color or race or religion. We have highproďŹ le veterans and people who have debilitating diseases that they use cannabis for.

You come to one of these parties and you see a 50-year-old white woman and then a 25-year-old African American kid with a bunch of his friends. What weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve done is created a community that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t exclude, and by doing so weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve created a wide base of people that are concerned about each other. This isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just about white people or black people or men or women.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in this together. If more minorities are being arrested for a plant than white people, this is stuff weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all concerned with, and because weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all concerned with it, I feel like we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really be divided by it.â&#x20AC;? My husband and I have been together for six years and are quite happy, much to the chagrin of his family.

They are Islamophobic, anti-choice, Fox Newsâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;watching, conservative Catholics. They began writing us letters about how they disapproved of us when we moved in together before marriage. One launched a campaign to break us up because they ďŹ gured my then-boyfriend didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know I was bisexual. (He did, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m out very 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

publicly.) They boycotted our wedding because it was not in a Catholic church. They would not come to a party we had because a Muslim friend would be there. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve realized that in order for us to even rarely see them, they need to cool it, but they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think they have anything to apologize for. After Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s election (#ITMFA), Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve found it difďŹ cult to stomach them even in small doses.

I grew up Catholic myself and was sent through gay conversion therapy, so I have a visceral reaction to this kind of bigotry, especially when it is directed toward my family of choice.

My husband is also appalled by them and always puts us ďŹ rst, but the idea of not retaining a connection to his family of origin hurts him. Do I suffer the occasional visit? Help! â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t Hubby Unload These Outrageously Unenlightened Turds For the sake of your marriage, SHUTOUT, you should suffer the occasional visitâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;whether your husband sees his family on his own or youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re along for the rideâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;without punishing your husband for it. Remember: Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in this together, and private jokes, surreptitious eye-rolls, and pot lozenges can go a long way toward making these events not just bearable but (mischievously) pleasurable.

And seeing as youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve already trained his family to cool it by cutting back on your time with themâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a strategy I recommendâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;you can train them to keep things civil, hate-free, and nonbiphobic by warning them in advance that you will get up and leave if they say anything shitty or unkind to you, about you, or in front of you. Then follow through.
