o many things went wrong inside that Starbucks on April 12. Let’s begin with this: We, who weren’t in the store, don’t exactly know the entire narrative, but what we know from reports and timely eyewitness video is that two black men entered the coffee chain on 18th and Spruce, sat down waiting for a friend before they decided to purchase something and were treated like they were a threat to everyone inside the store. All of this by a manager who – the hell with sensitivity training – needs a little common sense and proper etiquette on how to treat human beings. I’ve seen people struggling with opiate addiction drooped over in chairs and people experiencing homelessness catching a warm nap who were treated better than these two men at other establishments that don’t have the reach – much less the capital – that Starbucks has. Before the critics chime in to justify the 911 call, the arrival of at least half a dozen ofďŹ cers and the subsequent arrests, let’s break this down to brass tacks. But they were loitering... It’s not loitering if there is an intent to pay. It’s no different than window shopping in a store and walking out and not buying anything. From what we can ascertain from eyewitnesses and the video footage, these men weren’t being hostile. They weren’t making a scene. They weren’t even getting hype with the manager who called the cops. They just wanted to wait for their friend before they made a decision to buy a grande latte – or not. Well within their rights as customers to do. They should have just left the store‌ Why? At the moment that manager threatened their civil rights they shouldn’t have to go anywhere. I’ll tell you right now, I would’ve remained in that coffee shop until my friend showed up and I told him let’s get the fuck out of here, or until police did arrive and I stated my case. They should’ve just complied with police‌ From all I could see courtesy of video during the incident, the men didn’t cause a scene once police arrived, but of course the cops needed to bring not one or two but several to handcuff

two men whose only discernible crime was not walking in and immediately purchasing an overpriced cup of joe. It’s why they were arrested, but no charges were ďŹ led. Because honestly, what could they do to a pair of innocent men? Why even put the handcuffs on them. It’s demoralizing, humiliating and the minute that was done reinforced the fact that people in the store need to see these two as nothing more than common (black) criminals. They were just waiting for a friend, man. WTF. But because they don’t ďŹ t the motif of the block, they wore Yeezy’s instead of boat shoes and bomber jackets instead of Patagonia vests, they’re a threat? I just don’t know how you could explain it. You know what else I don’t understand? Police commissioner Richard Ross having the gall to get in front of a microphone and actually say he stood by the ofďŹ cer’s decisionmaking in this incident. Of course he threw in the predictable disclaimer that, as a black man, he’s aware of the realities of racial proďŹ ling. Blah, blah, blah. How about realizing these guys didn’t do shit and actually offering them a cup of coffee while they wait to squash the situation? Wouldn’t that have been a smarter decision that would’ve made that cop – or cops – look like heroes as opposed to siding with the manager to get these black deviants outta Rittenhouse? But I get it, Ross. You’re city’s top cop. Denounce your ofďŹ cers and the FOP’s on your ass and you look like the bad guy. Denounce it and your ofďŹ cers will think that you don’t have their backs in other, actually legitimate cases of trespassing. Well, guess what? Sometimes people aren’t going to like your decisions. Of course, this isn’t just Richard Ross. This isn’t even about the cops – because we wouldn’t expect anything else. This is about being a black man 2018 in a white part of town. Where closet segregation still exists. Where it’s OK if you buy something, but if you don’t, you better stay out – this world isn’t for you. Bottom line: racial inequality and proďŹ ling is much bigger than this incident at Starbucks. So it’s cool that CEOs can y into our city and regional managers can rush onsite to offer an apology and preach an ethos of being diverse and equal. The true shock here is that it happened within a city that prides itself on both, but as we can see, in some pockets, is still anything but.Q TWITTER: @SPRTSWTR

Study Shows New Sex Cream Works Like Magic for Older Men Recent warnings on sex drugs leads to the creation of an amazing no pill option; key ingredients activate sensation pathways triggering erections and arousal Christopher Steel San Diego, CA The medical community now has a safer and more effective alternative to sex pills, which they can immediately start offering to male patients with sexual performance issues. It will not require a prescription. The alternative, called Sensum+ÂŽ, is an amazing new sex cream containing an active ingredient that activates a sensation pathway on the penis known as TRPA1. When applied as directed, it leads to incredible arousal and triggers erections more easily. It also promotes powerful climaxes and ultimately results in signiďŹ cant improvements in performance. “Men can expect to experience life changing sexual improvements with regular use. The penis will become hyper sensitive, making them easily aroused and excitable,â€? explains Dr. Bassam Damaj, the President of the company behind Sensum+ÂŽ. “And that’s because Sensum+ÂŽ does what no other sex pill or drug has done before − it stimulates a special sensory pathway right below the skin, which leads to phenomenal improvements in sensation.â€? Overtime, constant exposure (especially if circumcised) leads to decreased penis sensitivity, which can cause problems with arousal and erection quality. There just isn’t enough feeling to get excited.â€? “Diabetes, anti-depressants and normal aging also leads to desensitization, and can make the situation even worse.â€? “This is what makes Sensum+ÂŽ so effective and why the clinical studies and clinical use studies have been so positive.â€?

MISDIAGNOSIS LEADS TO UNEEDED PERSCRIPTIONS After years of clinical research and testing, researchers discovered an incredible compound that triggers arousal and helps men achieve erections more easily. This compound isn’t a drug. It’s the active ingredient in Sensum+Ž. And according to users, it produces sensational results. Many men report remarkable improvements in sexual performance and overall satisfaction. They are more sexually active than they’ve been in years with the average Sensum+Ž user over the age of 50. Clinical studies show Sensum+Ž’s key ingredient activates the TRPA1 sensation pathway right below the skin of the penis. According to research, many men adults and seniors who suffer sexually have lost sensation in their penis due to constant rubbing and exposure and health related issues such as diabetes, hernia surgery, use of some anti-depressants, multiple sclerosis, and other type of illnesses.

This desensitization often makes sex extremely challenging. Without a 100% feeling in the penis, its next to impossible to get truly aroused. Worse, modern day sex drugs have absolutely no effect on sensation and are laden with side effects. They simply stimulate an erection by enhancing blood ow. It’s why most men are rarely satisďŹ ed after taking them and why Sensum+ÂŽ users are always stocking up on more and couldn’t be happier. “We knew the science behind Sensum+ÂŽ was there, but we never expected results like we’re seeing. It’s far exceeded our expectationsâ€? said a spokesperson for the company.

A STAGGERING 80% IMPROVEMENT IN SENSITIVITY Researchers have conducted several clinical studies on Sensum+ÂŽ and the results from the most recent are undoubtedly the most impressive. A data analysis of three clinical surveys of 370 men showed that an amazing 80% of Sensum+ÂŽ users experienced dramatic improvements while using the cream and as a result were aroused easier and a phenomenal boost in performance. Additionally, 77.4% of men also reported much more satisfying climaxes, making sex for both them and their partners nearly 300% more satisfying. “I have full feeling and sensitivity back in my penis. Everything feels better. My erections are harder, I’m more easily aroused, I can ďŹ nally climax again. This stuff honestly works like magic in the bedroom. I couldn’t be happier at 66!â€? raves one Sensum+ÂŽ user.

HOW SENSUM+ÂŽ WORKS Sensum+ÂŽ is a new sex cream for men that’s to be applied twice a day for the ďŹ rst two weeks then just once every day after. There are no harmful side effects for either the user or partner. It also does not require a prescription. The active ingredient is an organic compound known as cinnamaldehyde with a patented combination of sexually rousing extracts. Research shows that as men get older, they often lose sensitivity to the penis. Although very subtle, this desensitization can signiďŹ cantly hinder sexual performance and lead to serious problems with becoming aroused and staying/getting hard. The cinnamaldehyde in Sensum+ÂŽ is one of the only known ingredients to activate a special sensation pathway on the penis called TRPA1. Once activated, it restores tremendous sensation to the penis, stimulating arousal and powerful erections. This would explain why so many users are experiencing impressive results so quickly and why the company behind Sensum+ÂŽ offers their low cost cream with an amazing guarantee.

Doctor Approved SENSUM+ÂŽ: Triples sexual satisfaction for men by increasing “penile sensitivtyâ€? GUARANTEE DISCOUNTED SUPPLY TAKES RISK OFF CONSUMERS A large percentage of men report life changing results with Sensum+ÂŽ. That’s why it is now being sold with an aboveindustry standard guarantee. “We can only make this guarantee because we are 100% certain this cream works,â€? says Damaj. “We want to take risk off the consumers. So besides offering massive discounts, we’re also offering this guarantee, so they don’t have to risk a cent.â€? Here’s how it works: Use the cream exactly as directed and in just one week, you must feel a signiďŹ cant improvement in sexual sensations. You must be more easily aroused with harder, longer lasting erections and be having the best sex you’ve had in years. Otherwise, simply return the empty bottles. Then, Innovus Pharmaceuticals will refund your money immediately.

Pennsylvania’s medical marijuana program has expanded rapidly in the last year, with more growth to hit Philly by the end of 2018. The Department of Health has granted permits to 12 marijuana growers and is expected to issue up to 13 more grow facility permits this summer. Philadelphia County has so far not seen any of the economic development perks of a grow facility, but already has four dispensary shops slated to open by next year. Q

Although the conversation around marijuana has quieted, there’s still much to talk about before the annual 420 day.

Roll this... A collection of musings, notes and more ahead of the annual event that is 4:20 COMPILED BY KERITH GABRIEL

With marijuana decriminalized and construction of medicinal grow houses imminent in Philadelphia, the topic of weed and all stigma that comes along with it is burned down to the roach. That doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to talk about‌

We asked the comedic personalities that make up Chinatown’s Good Good Comedy Theater one question: “What’s the holdup in getting marijuana completely legalized for everyday usage in the U.S.?â€? Why? One of Good Good’s ďŹ nest events is its monthly show “Weeding out the Stoned,â€? in which audience members and family members of a few of the comics themselves have to guess the person on stage who’s high AF. It makes for a laugh, not because they're stoned, but because the premise alone is hilarious. From smoking it to selling it, you can ďŹ nd a lyric in one of his songs about making a living and keeping things light via holding weight in weed. However the rapper is speaking out how the drug has helped him through end stage renal and kidney failure in addition to other connections with the drug sitting on multiple panels at the upcoming World Medical Cannabis Conference in Pittsburgh from April 21-22. “Studies have shown the long-term use of cannabis to be safe. S

unday marks 48 years of celebrating Earth Day, and Philly organizations are putting out ecofriendly events for all ages. This year’s ofďŹ cial theme is “End Plastic Pollution,â€? but the city will also have a smorgasbord of action-based, community and educational Earth Day events all weekend long. Let’s face it: This year has been rough on the environment, and you may be struggling to reach for the gardening tools and trash bags.

Granted, rollbacks and Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt’s tax-payer-fueled shopping sprees have likely turned some green hearts blue. But let’s turn the bleak news cycle into motivation for civic engagement, shall we? For encouragement, consider that 20 million Americans protested for environmental protection during the ďŹ rst-ever Earth Day in 1970. Their call to action was a major catalyst for crucial environmental legislation, including The Clean Air Act, The Clean Water Act and the formation of the EPA. Here are seven events to reinvigorate those ecowarrior spirits and give the Philly outdoors some much-needed TLC.

LGBT

Gay bashing Abuse of all kinds is more prevalent than one might think in LGBT relationships BY TIMAREE SCHMIT IMAGE COURTESY: TIMAREE SCHMIT

T

he most common depiction of domestic violence is a woman as victim, threatened by a man. The reality of who commits and experiences abuse – and what it looks like – though, is more complex. Stereotypes about gender affect how abusive situations are handled by not only bystanders and authorities, but the people in the relationship. Compounded by the impacts of homophobia, abuse in LGBT communities can be especially difďŹ cult to navigate. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the average heterosexual woman has a 35 percent chance of experiencing rape, physical violence or stalking by a partner in her lifetime. For lesbians, the odds increase to 44 percent, and for bisexuals the rate is 61 percent. The same research found that “40 percent of gay men and 47 percent of bisexual men have experienced sexual violence other than rape, compared to 21 percent of heterosexual men.â€? Intimate partner violence can happen anywhere, regardless of demographics, but racism, ableism, sexism and homophobia can make victims of abuse feel even more isolated. While women are more likely to experience abuse in relationships than men, we have also come to recognize male forms of control as abusive more quickly than the tactics used by women. We spoke to a few survivors, some under condition of anonymity, who recounted varying experiences of abuse. “I don’t think I understood it as rape then,â€? says Kristin, who recounted a violent sexual experience from 2004. “I don’t remember if I thought about contacting the police, but I don’t think that I did because I did think it was my fault for getting in the car and because I didn’t think rape could even happen between two women.â€?

$35,/

Before his transition, Mason claims he wrestled with living as a girl and was threatened never to change by an abusive lesbian partner, so much so that he contemplated suicide. She added, “If I'd been dealing with a guy, I don't think I would have trusted him enough to get in his car, much less his house. ‌ I was a savvy, careful person, but women often don't want to hurt people's feelings. I thought it would be a quick coffee and I'd be done with her. I had never heard of a woman raping another woman.â€? Kristin’s reaction is similar to one that Siona, 26, recounts. “I think it just felt like a deeper betrayal because she was a woman, like I was,â€? she said as she recalled a previous abusive relationship, “She was ‘supposed to’ be safe‌ And I guess being gay there wasn’t a lot of places I could turn for support because I never saw healthy gay relationships or unhealthy gay relationships. Some of my friends tried to get me out of it but I didn’t listen. And some I was able to fool. But if all of what she did was done by a guy, I feel like no one would let me get away with it [and it would] have ended it much sooner.â€? Rather than using threats of physical force, 34-year-old Noel’s abuser employed more insidious tactics, like “ganging up with friendsâ€? to degrade her and shame her in public, as well as surveillance like checking her phone and email. It wasn’t until she was at Laurel House, a Montgomery-based center that specializes in abuse therapy, that she realized the full extent of what had happened. “When I talk about my experience, especially with people who identify as heterosexual, they are always so surprised that a woman

has the capacity or the capability to be abusive,â€? Noel said. “I think that's why I couldn't even realize it until I was in domestic violence therapy at Laurel House. I still remember my ďŹ rst meeting where I was shown a diagram of the cycle of abuse‌[it]took my breath away because that was the story of my relationship. It also explained why it was so hard to leave.â€? LGBT victims of abuse face unique dilemmas in reaching out for help. The National Coalition of Anti-Violence programs says police and service organizations may not take accusations as seriously, assume the abuse is mutual or that more masculine partner is to blame, and in some cases, have put the abuser in the same jail cell or shelter as the victim. “My queer close friends were generally among the most supportive. Yet, in some ways, being queer made the aftermath of the abuse more difďŹ cult,â€? says a local gay poet in his 20s, speaking on a condition of anonymity, “Because the queer community is relatively small, my abuser and I had tons of mutual friends. It was nearly impossible for me to avoid people and places that I associated with him, which led to cutting a lot of otherwise great people out of my life.â€? Marginalized communities are more likely to experience negative health outcomes, like problems with drugs and alcohol, mental illness and suicide. The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse says routinely dealing with discrimination in housing, employment and health care makes LGBT people more susceptible to anxiety, fear and social isolation, which are breeding grounds for abusive situations. Many ďŹ nd strength in the queer community, but some bisexuals say they face both homophobia and exclusion from the gay world. Bridget, a 29-year-old woman who now identiďŹ es as queer/ pansexual says, “I've always had healthier dating relationships with men, so conversations around domestic violence are always a little odd for me. On a daily basis I face the usual microaggressions, discrimination, violence from men and the patriarchy, but nothing scares me like my ex-girlfriend.â€? Bridget recounts drunken, violent rages and years of emotional

abuse. “I know jealousy played a part. She was uncomfortable with my history with men, and my bisexuality. She refused to get tested even though she'd had past partners, but judged me for my promiscuity.â€? During one particularly terrifying night, she called 911. “But she told me I was overreacting, told me I'd ruin her career, so I hung up,â€? she adds, “Plus, we were that adorable token lesbian couple.â€? Later, Bridget says, “When I told people, most of them had no idea, they were really surprised. They didn't see it in her.â€? LGBT abusers may even use homophobia and transphobia to their advantage, threatening to out closeted partners to their families or employers, as well invalidating identities and intentionally misgendering. Mason, a 24-year-old from North Philadelphia had a long road of ďŹ nding his authentic self, growing up in a conservative part of the city when it came to the LGBT sphere. Before realizing that he identiďŹ ed as a queer man, he ďŹ rst tried living as a lesbian and ended up dating a woman who he says was “toxically transphobic.â€? “She blatantly told me that I was a girl,â€? he said. “During our relationship she threw out all of my masculine clothes, repeatedly told me I was a woman and made me grow out my hair and wear dresses. Any time I would bring up anything remotely masculine she would shut it down and tell me that I wasn’t a little boy and she’s a lesbian and can only be with women.â€? He looks back on that period with mixed emotions, “I learned more about who I am not, which allowed me to have a moment one day where it became life or death. I did not want to live as a woman anymore and I would have rather died as the authentic male version of myself. I wrote a suicide note and everything. That was the moment I knew that I needed to start living for me. I deserved better.â€? Today Mason is happily engaged to a woman who supported his choice to transition and says, “have been the happiest, healthiest and best version of myself. My only regret is not ďŹ nding myself sooner.â€? Q

For people living in the Philadelphia area who are interested in more information or resources, there are several options for housing and counseling, including the William Way LGBT Community Center and Attic Youth Center. Outside the region? There are a number of groups that focus on LGBT populations like The Network La Red, The Anti-Violence Project, GLBT National Help Center, and FORGE. The National Domestic Violence Hotline can be reached at 1-800-799SAFE.

How would you describe your sound?

Nick: We tried this before, and it's hard. We've been called a lot of things. Dan: Indie rock. Cole: Filthy classic. Zach: Classic rock, rock 'n roll ďŹ lth. Dan: We also got a balls-out indie rock. Nick: That's probably the best.

And your music influencers?

Zach: Indie rock artists, like The Killers is a huge one, CatďŹ sh and the Bottlemen, sometimes Oasis, Pixies, and Arctic Monkeys. Pretty much the big dogs of indie rock.

ut she's no big romancer. A Rocket Man without a Tiny Dancer...â€? These were lyrics local band the Morning Herald sang to a sold-out crowd during a recent show at Ortlieb’s in Northern Liberties. OK, sold out is a stretch. In fact, it’s a complete fallacy. In all, there were about seven people, ďŹ ve of them being friends of the band. But that didn’t stop the Philly indie rock group from singing their latest single, “Fall Back To Earthâ€? as though a mosh pit was in full steam. Comprised of current and graduated Villanova University students, their latest song has become the unofďŹ cial anthem to the school’s latest NCAA men’s basketball championship win. The band encapsulates the up-and-comer motif – strikingly talented with a unique sound that bridges clean and gritty, a solid

set-list, successes at the start of their music journey, and majors in ďŹ nance and engineering that they hope never get put to good use. After their “intimateâ€? gig, PW caught up with lead singer and guitarist Zach Leone, guitarist and back up vocalist Daniel Schmetterling, bassist and back up vocalist Cole Chebi, and drummer Nick Miller.

Is it discouraging when the turnout is low?

Cole: Absolutely – not. Zach: The good part about being a college band at the moment is that we have these opportunities where we can go to a basement and then we can go to a school organized event, and you have two completely different audiences. But I feel like our music can ďŹ t both vibes. It's dirty enough for the basement, but also clean and anthemic enough for a large hall. Nick: It helps you ďŹ nd your sound too, we played shows this size and up to the big guys. You get to play with a lot of different bands. [At Ortlieb’s], we were sort of the headline act. I think we have a sound dirty enough and grungy enough to work with [this space], but as we said, we have cleanness too. I mean these bands are true indie rock, very hipster, very cool and calm, and we can follow them up and still feel like we belong.

Zach: I'd say last spring we opened up for Saint Motel, which was really awesome. Those guys deďŹ nitely made us feel like we were in the big leagues, especially when soundchecking in front of them. We got in the green room with them so you got the full catering. Cole: The lead singer offered me some of his goji berries. Zach: It was wild. At that moment we were like "Alright, this is what could happen."

So you just released “Fall Back to Earth, but you have a number of originals under your belt. Can you talk about your finished works?

Zach: Dan and I wrote and recorded "Undiscovered Oceans" which is the debut album. We did that for ourselves, just on the computer, learning how to mix and master in the process. That was a 12-track album. Then this past summer, starting around May, we began recording this new three-track EP called "Pure Electricity," and that was pretty much a mishmash of recording ourselves and having some outside help come in and produce. Most recently we just put out a new single "Fall Back to Earth" which we've been trying to pump up as as the Villanova Wildcats’ anthem for their most recent victory.

How has the school’s reception been to the song?

Zach: It's coming along, you know people have adopted it. We made a couple hype videos during the tournament, showing a lot of video of the basketball team. Those ended up getting some traction online.

Is “Fall to the Earth a sign that something new is in the works?

Yeah, we're still writing. We're at a point right now where we are playing a lot of shows, but we are always thinking about new songs and new material to work on. We're also always kind of thinking about new songs and new material to work on. So we kind of put this one out just as the March Madness was going on to keep the Villanova community spirit alive.

Zach, as the lyricist, what did you have in mind when writing “Fall Back to Earth?

Zach: I always had the idea to make the song uplifting and triumphant. So I wanted to get something that was along those lines of “on the rise.â€? So how this idea of "Fall Back to Earth," there is a really long backstory about this Greek – Dan: Oh no! Cole: Ephesus? Zach: This guy named Ephesus. But that can be more, if you're interested, go to Wikipedia for that. Dan: Yeah, just google that. Zach: We deďŹ nitely wanted it to be about after you fall down, you can rise back up to the height that you were at before. Nick: Chumbawamba-esque if you will. Zach: Exactly, throw in a little Elton John.

As an up-and-coming band in the Philly area, what do you think about the city’s music scene?

Zach: It's been great to us so far. We're all just kind of in the same spot right now, and I think we're all just growing together. Cole: A lot of it is uncharted. There is so much to see, so much to experience, so we are excited to keep branching out and see what we get. Zach: What I've noticed is that it's a lot of tiny steps ... For example, with these shows at Ortlieb's, we just have a lot of people reaching out, and once that happens, we have these moments where we can expand our audience and really start to improve our sound. So I think we're still deďŹ nitely on the climb, but we've had these little moments as we go where someone in Britain will review one of our songs, and we will be like "Oh my god. What was that?!" Or opening up for Saint Motel. So it is constantly bringing more conďŹ dence to the group, and we are excited for the future. Q TWITTER: @ANDREAJCANTOR

In a sea of male-fronted doom bands, King Woman is a refreshing change.

Lady of doom Kristina Esfandiari, frontwoman of the Bay-area band King Woman, talks about pain, religion and inspiration in wake of her Union Transfer show BY SARAH ROSE ETTER

L

ast weekend marked the return of King Woman, a shoe-gazing doom metal band that surely burst some eardrums and broke a few hearts. Fronted by Kristina Esfandiari, the band offered up its heavy sludge with a softness and sadness that was shrouded in layers of fog machine clouds. At the Bay-area band’s Union Transfer

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

show, where they opened for Russian Circles, it was impossible to stop watching Esfandiari. Her voice was low and husky – sometimes she was whispering lyrics like incantations, then howling “You can’t even look at me,â€? into the microphone as the music swelled behind her. At Union Transfer, the band moved through songs off of their hit LP Created In The Image of Suffering. “Shameâ€? and “Mannaâ€? were highlights of the set, with the latter closing out the show as Esfandiari writhed on the oor, screaming into a microphone. Later, she tells me via text that she’s been battling a sinus infection on tour – which made the performance all the more impressive. Esfandiari told Rolling Stone a few years ago that much of her work in King Woman is informed and inspired by her experience growing up with "a charismatic Christian churchâ€? where she saw disturbing exorcisms and emotional manipulations at a young age. The exploration of those themes continues through the bands’ latest releases. When I ask her about religion now, she seems to have found some peace. “There was a point where I was very angry and you can feel that in Doubt [the ďŹ rst King Woman EP.] I’ve grown more at peace with my past and can see beauty in my expe-

riences, Esfandiari said. “They’ve made me the powerful force that I am today and I wouldn’t change a thing about my story. I suppose I was working out some of my confusion, pain and anger in song form. Even when the band isn’t playing their own songs, there is a yearning to Esfandiari that’s hard to look away from – in the band’s cover of The Stone Roses’ “I Wanna Be Adored, the band lets the momentum build until Esfandiari is repeating the titular lyric with a desperation that will stick in your head for days. Similarly, the song “Hierophant, one of the bands’ most compelling, sees Esfandiari repeating lyrics that become hymns turned on their heads. Lyrically, she’s often exploring themes of religion gone wrong or love turned sour, but she does so with a sparseness that doesn’t turn melodramatic. “Usually, when I’m writing lyrics, it all comes from my soul. I just write what I’m feeling or a word catches my attention and I have to work through it. It all feels very natural, intuitive, Esfandiari told me. “I also like the idea of turning something fucked up [like religion] into a beautiful song or bringing scriptures to life through a song, putting my own spin on it. Somehow it makes me feel like I’ve reclaimed something lost. It feels nice to manipulate the scriptures that were once used to manipulate me. There’s a part of me that wants to get inside of Esfandiari’s head, so I ask her who has been inspiring her lately – and the list is dynamic. “I’ve been reading a book called Ecstasy that’s about reconnecting with myth and Gods, mainly Dionysus. I’m also really inspired by the artist Noelia Towers, who is on tour with us. Everyone should check her out, Esfandiari said. “Also my friend Nedda Afsari is an amazing photographer. I just did a Goddess-inspired photo shoot with her for a project she is working on. It felt very empowering and sexually charged. Films? I’m on a Wong Kar-wai kick. I’ve always been drawn to the band largely because of Esfandiari’s strange, vibrant poise. In a sea of male-fronted doom bands, she is a refreshing change – at turns manic, head-banging, and intensely longing. “It took me a while to get out of my shell [on stage]. But once I realized I was a performer, it just kind of spilled out naturally, Esfandiari said. “I’m a very animated individual. My two favorite performers are Yves Tumor and Nick Cave. Performing feels like bliss. I feel so much love for the crowds, and I just want to experience connection ... share it with the people in the room. Sometimes I play shows and I just think to myself, ‘Wow these people took time out of their schedule just to experience this.’ It’s humbling. Bad brew

The arrest of two Black men at a downtown Starbucks last week launched Philly into the national spotlight – and highlighted a problem that extends far beyond coffee shops BY MAX MARIN

P

rinted on the glass window next to the entrance of the Starbucks at 1801 Spruce St. is a gently phrased list of store rules. No excessive loitering. No excessive noise. No disruptive profanity. No “activity that is inconsistent with the general purpose of our store, which is shopping and dining. But an employee’s attempt to enforce corporate rules on April 12 has ironically led to even more disruption at the Rittenhouse branch – and an apology tour for the company CEO.

On Monday, April 16, throngs of protesters, politicians, reporters, police ofďŹ cers and bystanders gathered at the coffee shop for the second day of rallies in response to the arrest of two Black men in the store four days prior. A viral video depicted at least half a dozen police ofďŹ cers escorting the two would-be customers out of the store in handcuffs. Their only crime: They were waiting on a friend to talk business, according to multiple reports, and they hadn’t ordered anything in a timely enough fashion for the store manager. “Today, Black men in the city and across the country know that there’s another action added to the things you can’t do ‘while Black’ – getting a cup of coffee,â€? Jack Drummond, director of Philadelphia’s OfďŹ ce of Black Male Engagement, said in a statement. The arrests have prompted national outrage and a urry of mea culpas from the international coffee giant, which cleared $22 billion in sales last year. The store manager who phoned the police for the two men has since left the company in what is being called a “mutualâ€? decision. Meanwhile, Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson ew to Philly to meet with city ofďŹ cials – and is reportedly trying to meet the two men who are arrested. At the 18th & Spruce Street coffee shop during Monday’s daylong rallies, protesters seized the moment to highlight that the arrests are just part of a larger problem with how people of color are policed across the city. “It’s bigger than Starbucks,â€? Deandra Jefferson, an organizer with the Philly Coalition for R.E.A.L. Justice, told a roomful of about 40 protesters and reporters, through a microphone. “They continue to show us how they don’t want us in their spaces anymore.â€? Jefferson and other speakers touched on numerous issues, like redlining and gentriďŹ cation to militarized policing, that continue to dictate Black life in cities across the country. Some had words for local politicians – like City Council President Darrell Clarke – for what they saw as support for gentriďŹ cation in predominantly Black neighborhoods. Many who weren’t afďŹ liated with the organizing groups, like Rocky NegrĂłn, also took a chance to speak at the rally, criticizing those who fail to see the problem exempliďŹ ed by the arrests. “I’ve seen ďŹ ve people come in since we’ve been here and complain that they can’t get their Macchiato,â€? NegrĂłn said. “Fuck you! People are getting arrested in these stores.â€? At one point during Monday’s protests at the store, a confrontation erupted between a middle-aged white man walking his dogs down the street and another white man who was supporting the demonstrators. Cops stood by ready to intervene, but the scufe didn’t last long. “We get involved when they lay hands,â€? one ofďŹ cer told an onlooker. “If they want to yack at each other, let ‘em yack.â€? The police response to the arrests has also drawn heavy criticism. After the videos went viral, PPD Commissioner Richard Ross issued

SAVAGE LOVE

Down There DAN SAVAGE Background: I, a 21-year-old male, enjoy receptive ďŹ sting. I’ve also had constipation problems all my life. Question: I saw my doctor recently, and he tried to link my enjoyment of anal sex to my constipation. (Granted, I didn’t tell him EVERYTHING I do down there.) My understanding was that there was no causal relationship, assuming no serious injuries occur. Is there something I don’t know? Was my doctor just trying to be helpful? – Fearing Inner Sanctum Tarnished “There are many myths about anal sex, but this is the ďŹ rst time I’ve heard this one,â€? said Dr. Peter Shalit, a physician in Seattle and a member of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association. It’s also the ďŹ rst time I’ve heard anyone associate ďŹ sting with constipation – typically when ďŹ sting is mentioned in the same sentence as constipation, FIST, it’s as a cure. But it’s a myth that ďŹ sting cures constipation, of course, along with anal sex being inherently dangerous. “Fisting is a safe activity, provided that both the top and bottom are sober at the time,â€? said Dr. Shalit. “It does not cause damage or constipation or any other type of bowel problem. The same applies to other anal sexual activities including anal receptive intercourse (getting fucked) and use of toys (dildos, vibrators, etc.) for anal stimulation – again assuming this is voluntary on the part of the bottom and that both partners are not under the inuence of mind-altering drugs during sexual activity.â€? (For safety’s sake, of course, buttfuckers should use condoms and gay and bi men get should get on PrEP). While many people engage in anal play while under the inuence of drugs or alcohol, and most emerge unscathed, uninfected and un-constipated, FIST, getting fucked up before ďŹ sting is not a butt sex best practice. A fuckedup top can quickly become an out-of-control top, and a fucked-up bottom can be numb to feelings of discomfort that mean “slow down,â€? “stop and add more lube,â€? or “stop altogether.â€? Despite the fact that millions of people safely engage in anal play, many people believe that

$35,/

anal play does irreparable harm to the anus – or the soul – and that sadly includes many doctors. “There is a misconception that these activities can cause damage by stretching or tearing the tissue, when actually the anus is very elastic and much of the ‘permission to enter’ actually involves intentional relaxation of the muscles by the bottomâ€? and not force applied by the top, Dr. Shalit afďŹ rmed. (The top applies gentle pressure, the bottom breathes, relaxes and opens up.) “If a person suffers from constipation, that should be addressed as its own problem and not blamed on any type of anal sexual activity,â€? said Dr. Shalit. “In addition: For obvious reasons, it’s not fun to bottom if you’re constipated, so it would be good to have this problem evaluated and treated by a nonjudgmental health-care provider who understands that anal penetration – by ďŹ st, penis or dildo – does not cause constipation.â€? Finally, FIST, your doctor was misinformed, which is not helpful. If you don’t feel comfortable telling your doctor EVERYTHING you’re doing “down there,â€? you can ďŹ nd a new doctor – one you can breathe, relax and open up to (in a different way) – under â€œďŹ nd a providerâ€? at GLMA.org. My boyfriend and I just got back from Berlin, and we had a great time – until the last night. There was a dark room in the basement of this gay bar, and my boyfriend wanted to check it out and I did not. We are monogamous for now – I’m open to opening things up down the road – and I didn’t see the point of going down there. I told him that drunk in a gay bar at 3 a.m. wasn’t the right time to open up our relationship, and he angrily insisted he wasn’t trying to do that. But if we’re monogamous and want to stay monogamous, why go into a dark room at all? – Dude Into Monogamy If it was your boyfriend’s intent to reopen negotiations about monogamy while horny men circled you in a dark room, DIM, that wouldn’t be OK. But it is possible for monogamous couples to enter sexually charged environments like dark rooms, sex parties or swingers clubs and emerge with their monogamous commitments intact. It’s advisable even – or at least I’ve advised monogamous couples who want to keep things hot to visit those kinds of spaces. Go in for the erotic charge, soak it up, and plow that energy into each other. You might have to bat a few hands away, but once the other guys realized you two weren’t there for anyone else, they would have turned their attentions toward someone else. Q

What They Are Saying: “This was my second purchase with Kathy Conway with Pat Conway being my primary contact in looking for a property. They are a joy to work with. I got excellent information and guidance in what turned out to be a much longer process than I had anticipated. Pat worked with me until, with Kathy, we found the “right property for me. I enjoyed working with them and will do it again. Jean Papaj
