Where tech meets art

It’s an equation we’re always calculating and recalculating.

2 PHILADELPHIA WEEKLY | APRIL 15 - 22 , 2015 | PHILADELPHIAWEEKLY.COM

E

very year, Philly Tech Week pulls together a ton of the city’s brightest forward thinkers to open up their brains and let the rest of us walk around in them for a while. There are all sorts of conversations about Very Serious Things to be had, of course: technological perspectives on the looming city elections (page 4), how teachers are using innovation to overcome challenges in the classroom (page 8), and how the food we eat has an ever more intimate relationship with the technology we invent (page 10). But there’s also fun. On Wednesday, April 22, the Philadelphia Orchestra’s principal guest conductor, Stéphane Denève, will lead the city’s premiere classical musicians in performing excerpts from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. It won’t be a typical concert, though: In conjunction with Tech Week, this will

be the orchestra’s third performance constructed around its new interactive mobile app, LiveNote, which lets audience members who aren’t already familiar with classical works follow the music with a real-time multimedia presentation in their hand, annotating each movement with historical background, trivia and visuals. It’s an ambitious experiment. The first LiveNote show in January saw the app working flawlessly—and yet occasionally, perhaps, distracting listeners from the music, rather than focusing them on it. But there’s excitement in figuring out the balance, and that’s what Tech Week always reminds us: We have to keep working that equation till both pixels and people shine. n

Philly Tech Week asks mayoral candidates: Get futuristic, please

T

his year’s primary election is on May 19, and in order to vote for the major political parties’ mayoral and City Council candidates that day, Philadelphians must register this week—before April 20. There’s more to prepping your vote than just registering, though. In an ideal world, we’d, you know, make sure we know a little something about the candidates as well as the issues we’re all facing. An ever-growing number of those issues are technological—and so this year’s fifth annual Philly Tech Week will feature two timely conversations, one for City Council candidates and another for mayoral candidates, on Mon. April 20. Juliana Reyes of Technical.ly Philly will moderate the two-hour city council candidates’ lunch at Benjamin’s Desk at 11:30am. “We’ll be super-focused on issues that affect Philly’s tech sector,” Reyes explains, “like open data, tax reform, broadband access and how to attract and retain talent and businesses.” (And, she notes, the city’s Comcast franchise renewal.) Candidates, she says, will be

able to “go deep on these issues—something you can’t get at general-interest forums.” Since there haven’t been many City Council forums this election season, the public is invited to pose questions for the candidates, either live in meatspace or via Twitter. The mayoral election, on the other hand, has finally caught up with the Internet Age, given the race’s information obsession: Every other day, it seems, there’s some sort of forum going on somewhere in town. That’s a great thing for voters, if a bit brutal on candidates’ sleep schedules, and Philly Tech Week gets in the game with a mayoral forum Monday evening at 5:30pm. Can the next mayor really affect the nittygritty of tech policy? Absolutely. Philly Tech Week organizers explain that “during the Nutter administration, there was an explosion of technology, entrepreneurship and new innovative thinking in the public, private and nonprofit spaces of the city.” In order to keep that momentum going, all major current and officially declared mayoral candidates will show up to rap open data, business and what

PTW calls a “smarter future” for Philly. Going to both events Monday is probably a good idea for any voters who are laser focused on innovation, too, given how symbiotic the relationship is between an increasingly powerful City Council and the mayor. While Reyes notes that “we haven’t seen Council get that involved with issues like open data and attracting and retaining businesses,” she points out as well that the next administration will face “the choice of continuing to carry out Mayor Nutter’s flagship tech initiatives.” In other words: Whoever wins these posts gets to make a lot of decisions that will affect that “smarter future” the technophiles are trying to build. —JOSH KRUGER

Philadelphia- According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That’s why it’s critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn prospective buyers away altogether. Sour cherry glazed duck wings

Happy Hour in Old City is a whole lot happier now, at least for discriminating taste buds, and thanks is due to Continental’s uber-talented Chef Jamie Wolf for the scrumptious reason why: Her sour cherry glazed duck wings on the updated happy-hour menu at Stephen Starr’s first eatery will have you shamelessly quacking with delight. Four oversized drummettes are first confited, then coated in a spice-tanged sauce that, although made from Amarena cherries, has none of their bitterness. Toasted sesame seeds and thinlysliced red chilis top ‘em off. Oh. Em. Gee. And so what if they’re billed as for-two plates— you won’t want to share, so don’t. Who it’s for: Fans of hot wings and their creative variants, plus proud finger-lickers. Where to get it: The original Continental Restaurant and Martini Bar, not the Mid-Town designation. 138 Market St. 215.923.6069. continentalmartinibar.com —SHEENA LESTER

The so-called “lawnmower beer” refers to the kind of light, easy to quaff brew you’d be most likely to drink while doing yard work, and there are even some fine ones brewed locally, like Manayunk Bohemian Blonde. This is one of those golden light beers usually featured in commercials filled with dudes and girls in bikinis, only it’s crafted here in PA by a small brewery. Light straw and grains are mildly sweet, while the dry finish is crisp and refreshing. In other words, it’s exactly what you want from a simple light beer. Who it’s for: Lovers of local lagers and casual, no-frills drinking. Where to get it: Grab your lawnmower and head to the Manayunk Brewpub to try it out. 4120 Main St. 215.482.8220. manayunkbrewery.com —ERIC SAN JUAN

This bacon-in-everything food trend hasn’t quite run its full course, has it? Good! We won’t question it or complain if the other results of these experiments come even close to Chuao Chocolatiers’ Maple Bacon bar. It’s like an expensive designer Crunch, except it’s bigger in size, and the milk chocolate’s crispy notes come from tiny bacon pieces and sweet maple, tinged with smoked sea salt. Even better: It’s 100-percent natural, gluten-free, plus its cacao is ethically sourced—so you can feel good about indulging yourself for a change. Who it’s for: Food snobs fond of the simultaneously sweet and savory, stoners with little-to-no expenses and disposable income to burn. Where to get it: Specialty food spots, like that fancy deli near you with sweets on display you try hard to avoid, but can’t. Thrillers and tailors and wit, oh my The Philadelphia Independent Film Festival offers a motley movie mix for the next six days. By Genevieve Valentine @GLValentine

T

his week, the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival rolls out its 2015 crop of dramas, dramatic suspensers and even thrillier thrillers. (There are a lot of jump scares in the lineup this year.) Here’s our breakdown of international highlights, local favorites and a few where you’ll want to bring a friend to join you in marveling at the WTFery.

12 PHILADELPHIA WEEKLY | APRIL 15 - 22 , 2015 | PHILADELPHIAWEEKLY.COM

FOR THE DRAMA Death On a Rock (Director/Writer: Scott

CENTER CITY WEST: 1713 Chestnut St. • 215-557-9850

BuffaloExchange.com

Ballard): A lovely young woman alone on a bicycle, enjoying the scenery and contemplating death. It sounds like the setup for a Portlandia sketch—and hails from that center of evergreen earnestness—but the dreamlike scenery and emotional intensity from star Rachael Perrell Fosket promise a movie that wants to tackle something deeper. Thurs., April 23, 9:20pm. University

of the Arts, Terra Hall, 211 S. Broad St.

The Kids from the Marx and Engels Street (Director: Nikola Vukčević/Writers: N. Vukčević, Djordje Milosavljevic and Milica Piletic): This politically-charged, over-the-top revenge tale from Montenegro was their bid for Best Foreign Language Oscar. It follows a young man trying to avenge his family, with a dash of teen sex caper added to the pot, just in case. Tues., April 21, 9:10pm. University of

the Arts, Terra Hall, 211 S. Broad St.

FOR LAUGHS The Origins of Wit and Humor (Director: Christian Gridelli / Writers: C. Gridelli and Hunter Norris): It’s nothing new to follow the travails of a standup comic as he searches for fulfillment, but The Origins of Wit and Humor is aware of its pedigree: It’s billed as a film about the neediness of comedy and features a magical elixir that makes everyone find our hero funny—no matter what. Gift? Curse? Impetus for a quest? Yes. Thurs., April 23, 10:45pm. University of the Arts, Levitt Theater, 320 S. Broad St.

TRUE STORY Buskin’ Blues (Director: Erin Derham): This documentary looks at the booming culture of Asheville’s buskers through the slightly rose-colored glasses of its participants. Some consider it their calling sacred, others regard it as a long shot that may not make good. Tues., April 21, 11pm.

University of the Arts, Caplan Center for the Performing Arts, Terra Hall, 211 S. Broad St.

LOCAL KIDS The Tailor’s Apprentice (Director/Writer: Jeff Lehman): A family drama inspired by true events, according to the filmmakers, this tale about generational friction and the drug trade follows a Jewish tailor as he tries

Primrose Lane (Director/Writer: Kathleen Davison): This slow-burn haunted house horror has been lauded by several film festivals; now, it brings its scares back to Philly. When a couple make themselves at home in the house of absent friends, it stirs the ghosts of the past. Wed., April 22, 9:25pm. University of the Arts, 320 S. Broad St.

CHILLS AND THRILLS Nightmare Code (Director: Mark

14 PHILADELPHIA WEEKLY | APRIL 15 - 22 , 2015 | PHILADELPHIAWEEKLY.COM

Netter / Writers: M. Netter and M.J. Rotondi): It’s both good and bad luck that this technothriller is debuting so close to Unfriended, another found-footage horror. But Nightmare Code—winner of the Philip K. Dick SF Film Festival—seems an ambitious take, using found-footage sources to track a team of techies dealing with code that drives its writers mad. Tues., April 21, 7:20pm.

University of the Arts, Caplan Center for the Performing Arts, Terra Hall, 211 S. Broad St.

Night Eyes (Director: David Cocheret / Writers: D. Cocheret and Jack Lance): Despite sharing a title with the latenight cable classic, we promise this drama from the Netherlands is unrelated and much creepier. Adapted from Lance’s novel, Night Eyes begins with a woman arriving home to find her own car already waiting in the driveway. The identity issues of her out-of-body experiences only get more thorny. CRAZY STUFF Greatful Dead (Director: Eiji Uchida / Writers: Etsuo Hiratani and E. hy do I even like my cat? She’s my longest relationship, by far. Together we’ve experienced two apartments, three houses, a dozen roommates and a cross-country move in a Honda CR-V. In the summer of 2004, when we were both just babies, we first met on a farm outside Lincoln, Nebraska. She was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen, despite being nothing but an unwieldy ball of fluff with very sharp edges. And she was a total bitch. That part continues to be true; she’s basically Regina George. At six weeks old, a cat is mostly just head, with tiny furry protrusions that sort-of function as legs and a tail. While they end up being the most insanely gifted athletes on the planet, able to jump more than five times their own height, cats start out as awkward dorks, barely able to walk without toppling under the weight of their bulbous adorableness. They take leaps between pieces of furniture with the grace of a 13-year-old boy, paws splayed out in all directions, landing with an embarrassed flop. Ripley (or “Lieutenant Ellen T Ripley, Last Survivor of the Nostromo,” as her birth certificate would read if cats had such things) was gawky and weird as a kitten nugget. While nearly all cats are proficient in the areas of facial cuteness and making you feel unimportant, she showed particular acumen. Immediately upon being introduced to her new home, she fled under the bed. Any approach, no matter how slow, was met with her best coiled, hissing snake impression. For three days she hid there, refusing to emerge. Maybe I had made a terrible mistake. Is there such a thing as kitten refund, I wondered. If I went back and told the farmer this cat wasn’t friendly, how long would he stare silently at me until I realized I should get off his property? Every problem has an engineering solution, so after I finally managed to pry her out from under the bed, pieces of luggage were strategically placed to block her from getting back under again. Like an introvert at a party, she was resentfully forced to socialize. Restraining my desire to hug her next to my face and squeal, I instead offered strings to chase, catnip to nom and head scratches,

if she wandered close enough. At some point, she decided I wasn’t the actual devil and started interacting with me. For her, it was acquiescence; for me it was falling in love. I’ve been her devoted service bottom ever since. Our relationships with pets are entirely impractical. We shell out huge chunks of change, invest inordinate emotion and literally pick up shit for small creatures who are incapable of contributing to the household economy. Yeah, maybe your dog will warn you about an intruder one time. But more often, they’ll eat your socks, pee on the rug and bark awkwardly too long any time a Black friend comes over. Yes, cats can eradicate pest problems, but they’re also jerks who like to knock expensive shit off of shelves. Birds, reptiles, rodents and fish don’t do anything productive either, other than demonstrating the concept of death for 5-year-olds. Yet what we feel for them is nothing short of dedicated fandom. Even if you’re not the type to buy your pitbull holiday sweaters or fill an Instagram with their idiotic face, you’re probably still more committed to that dog than to any girlfriend you’ve had. Despite sharing no more genetics with them than any other creature, we randomly select individual animals to shelter like they’re our offspring, even if we wouldn’t consider doing the same for human children. It’s especially strange to me, as a vegetarian, that people arbitrarily wear and eat some animals and then say to another, “Hey, you, come live at my house forever.” They are the worst roommates ever, consistently doing things we’d never tolerate from a person: making messes they can’t clean, throwing in nothing for rent and howling at random. After a few years, they die, spiraling us into a horrible depression that employers do not recognize as a valid excuse for missing work. Why would we do this to ourselves? Because her stupid face is totally cute, because her chirpy meows melt my idiot heart, because the rare instances where she deigns to sit on my lap and purr validate my very existence. Receiving love from an animal is fulfilling on a spiritual level and somehow feels purer and more genuine than affection from a human. Ripley may just be a beautiful bitch who makes demands of me, but she’s my beautiful bitch. 

The return of Odd Future’s Earl Sweatshirt

E

arl Sweatshirt is a little weird—but weird, of course, is subjective. Is he weird for his juvenile hijinks as a member of Odd Future, sucking down and barfing up a blended crunk cocktail full of weed, malt liquor and pills? Is it for his occasional wig-wearing or frank interview banter? Maybe it’s due to his new LP’s unconventional title, I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside: An Album by Earl? Whatever the reason, he—like his product—is undeniably fascinating. On his massive Not Ready 2 Leave Tour in support of the follow-up to 2013’s addictive Doris, Sweatshirt’s brought along a mildly peculiar couple of homies: Vince Staples, who’s orbited the Odd Future clique since 2009, and Queens’ Remy Banks. “He’s not weird. He’s just himself,” Banks says of Sweatshirt from L.A. before they rolled on to Toronto. “These shows are fuckin’ insane. If they’re there for Earl, they’re there for rap. They know what they’re getting’ into.” The trio are a fun play on the East-Coast-versus-West-Coast hip-hop beef that thankfully, is not what it used to be. There’s a distinctly Californian vibe to Sweatshirt and Staples, but is it because they defy genre trends by going in on the bullshit of “keeping it real” or calling attention to their own crippling, self-deprecating doubts? Hip-hop used to be so much about the boast and the battle. In a way, Sweatshirt’s helping to define a modern-day hip-hop that actually honors and cherishes new definitions of “realness,” in all its forms. His narrative’s perhaps as famous as he is: Sweatshirt’s mom sent him to a tough-love reform school for a couple years, shortly after those drug-shake-barf videos surfaced, and while he was tucked away without a cell phone or contact to the outer world, his star was ascending on the Internet. “Free Earl” became a thing. But even touring Doris, he slipped back into depression and relapse. Now, he says, he smokes a lot less because it keeps him grounded, experiencing life through the haze no longer, even though the new video for “Grief” has its own share of splifflighting and passing. Now that he’s out of that teenage wasteland, Sweatshirt’s truly embraced his mom, so OF fans who’ve villainized her can step to the rear. That newfound clarity is fueling his brilliant internal explorations. Let’s keep listening. —BILL CHENEVERT

THE UNCOMFORTABLE WHOLE

by Josh Kruger

Young murder Should violent teenagers be tried in court like adults? It seems fair. But it’s not.

I

Inquirer, “then he wouldn’t be where he’s at.” If you ask me, that kind of quizzical exasperation at the intransigence of antisocial youth cuts right to the heart of the matter: The way some teenagers behave truly makes no sense. “Based upon the neurobiological data alone,” explain researchers Staci A. Gruber and Deborah A. Yurgelun-Todd, “it is clear that children and adolescents are different both structurally and functionally from adults.” The researchers go on to say that “data from recent investigations provide evidence that brain maturation continues well past adolescence.” Basically, our adult decision-making capabilities—the ability to make decisions that can affect other people’s lives—aren’t fully formed by 18, let alone 15. The U.S. Supreme Court agrees, holding in its 2004 Roper v. Simmons decision that it is unconstitutional to execute Americans for crimes committed when they were under 18. And yet, contrary to the underlying principle there, it remains legal to try them as adults in courts and send them away for life. Of course, if we wanted to stop treating minors as adults in criminal proceedings tomorrow, the obvious question would remain: How do you maintain order and secure justice if you’re not able to threaten teenagers with grownup prison? Shouldn’t we able to scare them with the prospect of losing everything? Because, hey, doesn’t scaring people with ultimate punishment work as an effective criminal justice policy? Well—actually, no, we don’t know that it does. The National Research Council has shown that, even in terms of adult offenders, there’s no definitive evidence that the death penalty either does or does not deter crime. So the notion that teenagers—a group lacking adult impulse control—would be deterred by the abstract concept of prison is dubious. Teenagers as a whole aren’t exactly helping get society on their side, though. Thanks to their literal physical inability on average to behave like normal, accountable grownups, teenagers do sadistic, cruel, erratic things. Thanks to Philly’s teenagers, the word “flash mob” has a more malevolent meaning than a group of random performers in Macy’s. What bothers me about treating Smith and Hamilton as adults isn’t that their alleged crime was OK. If they did kill Stuhlman, it’s loathsome, horrific, heinous. When children can disrupt the order of our lives—when teenagers kill—it reveals the true nature of our society: Order is an illusion that can be lifted with one split-second decision made by a 15-yearold. 

by Dan Savage

I consider myself a straight guy—but for the last four years, I’ve been having an affair with “Connie,” a trans girl I met online. It was casual at first, but over time we developed a deeper personal relationship but kept it hidden. At some point, I figured out she was in love with me. I love her too, but I don’t think I’m “in love” with her. Several weeks ago, I went on a couple of dates with a girl I met on Match.com. The new girl posted about our dates on Facebook, Connie saw it and was upset, and then Connie outed me to the new girl. The new girl and I weren’t dating anymore, but it still was a betrayal that Connie told her about our relationship and my kink. Right now, I can’t look at or speak to Connie, but her friends tell me that she is despondent. I can’t get past my anger. I’d like to keep her as a friend, but can I trust her? —Secret Telling Unnerves Nice Guy “Right out the gate, STUNG has to declare his heterosexuality,” says Bailey Jay, an AVN Award– winning trans porn performer, writer, prolific (and hilarious) tweeter and cohost of The Jim Norton Show on Vice.com. “Unless he’s trying to say that trans women are men or that he’d be mortified to be mistaken for a gay person, then emphasizing ‘straight’ is unnecessary.” Vocabulary lesson’s over. Now the advice: “STUNG says he feels betrayed by Connie blabbing about their relationship,” says Jay, “but it sounds less like a betrayal and more like embarrassment. The whole tone of his letter seems to imply that it’s a given that being with a trans woman is innately shameful. But take out all of the conditioned negative associations that some have with trans people, and what are you left with? At worst, we have a young lady who got jealous and acted immaturely.” Let’s pause for a moment to think about this. You treated Connie like she was an embarrassing secret for four long years, STUNG, and that caused her pain. You caused her pain. Then you go on a couple dates with another woman—a cis woman—and it’s instantly all over Facebook. Connie was understandably upset, and not just by the fact that you were seeing someone else. All the hurt and anger that built up over the last four years—hurt at the way you treated her, anger with herself for putting up with it—overwhelmed her, and she lashed out. Connie isn’t a bad person, STUNG, she was just angry and upset. “I don’t think STUNG is a bad guy,” says Jay. “His attitude toward trans women was shaped by a culture that treats trans women as either fetishes or punch lines.” So what do I think you should do about Connie? You should call her and apologize. You should tell her that you treated her badly and you can understand why she lashed out. And you should tell her that, while you aren’t “in love” with her, you do love her. Then you should tell her you’re open to meeting up and talking things out. And what does Jay think you should do going forward? “I think STUNG should try to see every woman he sleeps with as fully human, regardless of their genitals.” Follow Bailey Jay on Twitter @ BaileyJayTweets. 

n America, we approach our youth with a large degree of cognitive dissonance. Consider the average horny teenager: Some states, like Pennsylvania, say you’re free to enjoy sexual relations upon reaching age 16; cross the state line into Delaware or New York, though, and suddenly the same acts of young love might be against the law. You’re welcome to join the military and potentially kill people at the age of 18, but you’re not allowed to drink a beer until you’re 21. And, culturally, you’re infantilized by society until you graduate high school, at which point you’re expected to instinctively know how to pay your rent and bills, get an education, work and raise children. This mess of contradictions doesn’t really make much sense unless you want to create a system doomed to fail, a culture wrought with intergenerational friction. Take, for instance, the case now before Philadelphia involving Brandon Smith and Tyfine Hamilton, both 15 years old. Police say the boys, together with a 14-year-old accomplice, attempted to rob Jim Stuhlman, 51, as he walked his labradoodle, Molly, in West Philly on March 12. Writing for the Philadelphia Inquirer, Matt Gelb reported that after a brief struggle, “Stuhlman, married and the father of a young daughter, pleaded for his life. He was shot once in the chest. The boys panicked and left Stuhlman’s belongings on his mortally wounded body.” Those 15-year-olds—who police say have previous robberies in their backgrounds— allegedly took Jim Stuhlman’s life, and senselessly so. The pointlessness of the tragedy outraged the community. And authorities have charged the boys with murder as adults. The horror of their purported crime notwithstanding, this is wrong. It piles destruction upon destruction. It’s understandable. The idea that an innocent man was killed merely for going about his daily life, his family forever wounded, is incomprehensible. It’s beyond reason that two fellow humans who enjoy the same rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness would make the calculated decision to rob someone, kill him, and then run away, terrified of what they had just done. But that’s the problem: Two mature adult humans didn’t do that. Two adolescent kids— the minds and spirits of boys in the rapidly growing bodies of men—allegedly did that. When the Inquirer reached Hamilton’s father for comment before his son had been taken into custody, he flatly said he had no idea where the boy was and that he never went to school in the first place. “If he would listen,” Hamilton’s father reportedly told the
