Questions for Council KERITH GABRIEL

O

n paper, City Council is doing things right in an effort to make Philadelphia a better place. At a glance of the City Council site, there are stories of the 17-member team awarding increased payouts for families of fallen soldiers, making tax breaks for big business beneďŹ t consumers in decreased rates, pushing Philly to become solar friendly and the introduction of bill(s) that would generate revenue for a cashstrapped school district. All good things. At the same time, Council has plenty of terrible ideas. I’m far from sold that the removal of bulletproof glass from stop-and-go stores in the city is going to make our city a safer – let alone foster healthy community relations between Asian store owners and the predominantly brown customers they serve. In fact, I don’t think it’s a solve at all. But that’s not the story here. The story is what these elected ofďŹ cials are doing when they aren’t on the clock – or when no one else is looking. From using government resources for personal beneďŹ t to billing the campaign account for every restaurant tab around town, Council members enjoy a different set of privileges than you or I – that is to say, that majority of Philadelphians who they’ve been elected to serve. This issue takes a bit of a dive into some of Philadelphia’s top lawmakers and their principles. Our joint investigation with City&State PA found that Council raised $1.8 million in campaign funding last year

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

and spent more than half of it on lavish fundraisers, pricey lunches to DVD rentals. It’s a detailed look at the funnel of campaign contributions and the lifestyles they create for those in City Hall. We also pulled mileage reports and gas receipts to see just how much time lawmakers spend in their city-provided SUVs. While some members of Council actually took a pass on city vehicles, according to our report, Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell poured 1,294 gallons last year. That is the equivalent of 27,000 miles in a year, about 74 miles a day. For a simpler portrait, look at this in terms of sheer radius: This is enough gas to drive from Philly to Newark, N.J. – one way – every day for the entire year. In city miles. Meanwhile, Blackwell’s district sits squarely in West Philadelphia. I have to hand it to the Councilwoman, who when asked how she was able to log such an exorbitant amount of miles and fuel in a year, replied exactly how I imagined someone with her clout and capacity would. “I work seven days a week. That’s all I can tell you.â€? To someone in a position of inuence, work perks come with the territory, so I already know what most of you reading this are thinking: that this isn’t news. Politicians do questionable and oft-times shady shit – and generally get away with it, too. But we’ve become a city that normalizes things that are, in the bigger picture, extremely abnormal. Most of what you’ll read inside about these lawmakers is not a crime. But these deeply normalized practices should give you pause about the ethical practices of the people elected to govern the city you inhabit. And that in itself, in my opinion, is one big reason why we should all care. Q

As Philadelphians, we already knew that our city is the true “Cradle of Liberty, but leave it to Boston to sweep in and take the claim as its own. However, thanks to the folks at the Museum of American Revolution and the Eagles’ Super Bowl victory, we got it back. Before the game, the presidents of MOAR and the Massachusetts Historical Society wagered that the winner would crown the other with the distinction. A date for April 17 at noon has been set for MHS president Catherine Allgor – dressed in an Eagles jersey – to deliver a speech in our honor, reminding all of Boston from Philadelphia all of the strides in American liberty that took place right HERE. If you want to check it out, you can purchase tickets from the Museum of American Revolution website. Think of it as just one more way we can still bask in Super Bowl glory – and stick it to Tom Brady. Q

POLITICS

For some inside City Hall, campaign perks are a part of the job. But in some cases, the line between of what constitutes a perk gets muddy.

The rat race Up for reelection next year, City Council members are raking in millions to prepare for battle – and spending wildly to curry favor around town BY MAX MARIN & RYAN BRIGGS

P

hiladelphia City Council is on the cusp of a quadrennial milestone: 2019 marks another cycle where every city legislator is up for reelection. For some pols, the past year was time to stockpile resources – if they weren't doing so already – and spread cash around to key constituencies ahead of possible primary challenges. For others, well, there’s always tomorrow...right? That’s a broad picture of what a City&State PA and Philly Weekly analysis of Council’s campaign ďŹ nance statements for 2017 revealed. Some Councilmembers are now years into increas-

ingly robust fundraising operations – top earner Kenyatta Johnson once again raked in nearly $275,000 in contributions last year, rounding out the year with nearly half a million cash on hand. “Kenyatta understands the importance of having a viable campaign bank account. I’m sure that I’m going to get one to two fundraising calls a year from him,â€? said veteran political consultant (and frequent donor) Larry Ceisler. “He has probably the most professional and streamlined operation out there.â€? Others, like Bill Greenlee – who has been dogged by rumors he may retire – struggled to crack the ďŹ ve-ďŹ gure mark. But Ceisler added that big numbers alone can

also be deceiving. He had praise for other members simply for upping their typical annual take. Figures like Al Taubenberger or Helen Gym both saw healthy increases in their year-over-year fundraising totals. At-large members are voted in through citywide elections and don’t enjoy the same stability or fundraising advantage as district members who wield power over neighborhood development projects. “If you’re Helen, you’re raising money for your reelection because at-large elections are always a crapshoot, Ceisler said. “If she gets a bad ballot position, if you don’t have same type of turnout, if she has problem because of the Rizzo statue... Contribution patterns varied wildly from Councilmember to Councilmember. Allan Domb, a downtown real estate mogul-turned-Councilman, saw more than half his contributions come via about 100 large donations by self-described attorneys, real estate professionals and business owners. Gym, a longtime progressive activist, listed about 260 donations from small donors who gave under $250. Nearly a third of Council President Darrell Clarke’s contributions came from developers or other real estate interests – stakeholders for Brandywine Realty Trust, Parkway Corporation and affordable housing developers gave him nearly $24,000 in 2017. Of course, in a city with historically powerful

unions, nearly every Councilmember got substantial donations from one or more trades group. Bigger fundraisers also tended to be bigger spenders. Mark Squilla and Bobby Henon were Council’s Nos. 2 and 3 earners, respectively, and were also the chamber’s top two spenders. Together, both men shelled out $407,000 last year for everything from pricey consultants to generous donations to neighborhood groups. Others, like Johnson and Republican Brian O’Neill, elected to keep their powder dry. Both today are sitting on warchests well in excess of $400,000. But no stockpile is large enough to guarantee political security these days. “It’s the Donald Trump effect, Squilla says. “We have more people involved and interested in politics, so I think at this point everybody should be expecting a challenger. Ceisler said that was an indication that O’Neill, the sole GOP district Councilmember in a heavily Democratic city, and Johnson, who reps a heavily gentrifying area, were hoping to preemptively ward off challengers – rumor has it that former Council aide Lauren Vidas is considering a run against Johnson. “I think both these guys know that they’re heading towards reelection and they’re expecting a stiff challenge, he said.

Charge it to the campaign Councilmembers collectively raised $1.8 million last year; they also collectively spent more than two-thirds of their total haul during the same period. Many vested into typical campaign costs – basic supplies, advertising and promotional materials, pricey political or fundraising consultants. But under state campaign ďŹ nance law, candidates can justify nearly any expense that furthers their reelection chances – with few limitations. To wit, Councilmembers charged their campaigns for a broad range of goods and services in the name of retaining their seats: $26,105 in mysterious credit card payments (Bobby Henon); $524 in parking tickets

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

(Cherelle Parker); $76 in Redbox DVD rentals (David Oh); nearly $1,000 in Union League membership dues (Brian O’Neill); and $162 for a Sirius XM radio subscription (Al Taubenberger). “Hey, you gotta listen to the news,â€? Ceisler remarked. Parker also spent $700 to hire four drivers to help transport constituents to a fraught community meeting last year during a neighborhood dustup over the opening of a medical marijuana dispensary in her district. Parker campaign spokesperson Aren Platt pushed back at the suggestion she had “bused inâ€? residents as backup during a politically complex dispute. “Busing has a negative connotation. It implies that these were people who would otherwise not be coming to the hearing,â€? he said. “Cherelle brought in some folks to help out with event logistics and they helped bring people in from the neighborhood. These were senior citizens with mobility issues, who needed help getting up and down stairs.â€? In the spring and fall of last year, Parker also spent $2,500 on consultant Steve Masters, a lawyer whose website advertises his expertise in disputing development plans, among other skills. Platt did not go into detail about the arrangement. Nor did he voluntarily disclose the nature of a $4,000 contract designated “researchâ€? with longtime political consultant Marty O’Rourke, who also represents ďŹ gures like Mayor Jim Kenney and congressional candidate Rich Lazer. “She hired consultants; it’s a permissible expenditure of funds. There’s a level of conďŹ dentiality between every client and consultant,â€? he said. “It’s not top-secret, but if you retain professional services, there’s an expectation of discretion.â€? But when it comes to shoring up good will ahead of a big election, no ticket is more trusted than the meal ticket. As Einstein famously said: “An empty stomach is not a good political advisor.â€? While many Councilmembers throw annual fundraisers and catered events to raise money, only a few regularly whip out their campaign cards to wine and dine their political circles around town. Many meals are expensed at nearby haunts where City Hall workers can escape for a campaign scrum, but any Italian or Asian Fusion restaurant seemed to sufďŹ ce. The hungriest pol was, by far, Councilman Brian O’Neill, who billed $5,751 in food and drink to the campaign account. O’Neill also took his

Gas guzzlers

City Council members are cruising around in brand new SUVs – and racking up questionable mileage BY MAX MARIN

D

espite looming ďŹ scal problems and discussion of new taxes, Philadelphia City Council members have billed taxpayers $320,970 for a eet of 13 brand-new SUVs – a perennially questioned perk some pols say they can’t live without. Philadelphia is one of a handful of major cities whose council members cruise around in their own taxpayer-funded rides. Fringe beneďŹ ts include free insurance, maintenance, and, best of all, unlimited gas at any of the 60 municipal ďŹ lling stations scattered around town. Fleet records obtained by Philly Weekly through a right-to-know request indicate some council members spend a lot more time behind the wheel than others – in new whips, to boot. Over a year ago, City Council quietly received a scheduled eet upgrade of new 2017 Chevy Equinoxes, a $24,690-a-pop compact SUV now driven by 13 city lawmakers. Fuel records show most vehicles consumed 300 to 600 gallons of gas last year, which is on par with the average American car owner.

$35,/

But some council members are going above and beyond, ostensibly in the name of the job. Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell pumped more than any of her colleagues, chugging 1,294 gallons of gas last year. Reached by phone, Blackwell, who lives in her West Philadelphia district, maintained she only used the car for workrelated affairs in the city. “I work seven days a week,â€? she said. “That’s all I can tell you.â€? If her 2017 Equinox clocks 21 miles per gallon in urban settings, as its manufacturer advertises, the six-term councilwoman used enough fuel to put 27,000 miles on the odometer. That’s about 74 miles per day. The second-busiest driver was Councilwoman Cherelle Parker, who clocked 956 gallons on her Equinox last year – enough to drive, at minimum, 20,000 miles annually, or 55 miles a day. Parker’s ofďŹ ce said she uses the vehicle to travel to and from her City Hall ofďŹ ce, attend meetings and provide other in-person constituent services. “Several of these engagements require her to travel outside of the city or outside the state,â€? a spokesperson for Parker said. Last year, the ďŹ rst-term councilwoman drove to several neighborhood-related conferences in Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. She also took a trip to New York City in December to attend the Pennsylvania Society, an annual booze-and-schmooze pageant for state politicians and the lobbyists who want their ears.

Records indicate Parker’s new Equinox received a $3,485 cityfunded repair charge following an auto accident last May. A spokesman said the councilwoman’s vehicle was hit while travelling in her district, and that a police report was ďŹ led. As a state representative in 2011, Parker caught a DUI in her Commonwealth-owned vehicle and later lost her license. Several years prior, her former chief of staff was sued after allegedly crashing Parker’s state-owned vehicle into a Sunoco station with Parker in the passenger seat, court records show. The case was later tossed out on appeal. All told, gas and maintenance for City Council’s eet cost about $46,000 last year. It’s small change in terms of a big-city budget. But in past election cycles, ďŹ scal watchdogs have loudly taken issue with individual legislators over their use of the work vehicles. Some said former Mayor Michael Nutter drove a wedge between his ofďŹ ce and Council during 2009 budget negotiations when he asked lawmakers to shoulder the city’s ďŹ scal burden and hand over their keys. After taking ofďŹ ce in 2016, Mayor Jim Kenney followed through on a campaign promise to ban parking on the City Hall apron – a longheld entitlement for Council and their staffs. But Kenney, a former councilman himself, has steered clear of his colleagues’ beloved beneďŹ t. He has no plans to bring it up during the ongoing budget negotiations this year, a mayoral spokesman conďŹ rmed. A 2011 Pew Charitable Trusts study found that out of 15 city councils surveyed nationwide, Philadelphia was one of just three municipalities to allow the perk. Other cities instead give legislators auto allowances and other reimbursements. Yet even ďŹ rst-term City Council members claim they can’t live without it. “I don’t count it as a perk – I count it as an extension of the ofďŹ ce,â€? said ďŹ rst-term Councilman Al Taubenberger, who was the third-highest gas consumer among his peers. “I couldn’t do my job as a city councilman without the vehicle.â€? Taubenberger argues at-large Council members like himself are ombudsmen for the entire city.

But eet data shows no pattern between district and at-large legislators when it comes to gas consumption. Taubenberger clocked nearly 900 gallons last year, while his ďŹ rst-term colleague, Councilwoman Helen Gym, used the least fuel out of any of her colleagues – just 218 gallons. Ditto for district legislators: Councilman Kenyatta Johnson used 1,000 gallons of gas less than his colleague, Blackwell. Council also retains three oldermodel pool vehicles for general use, which consumed between 90 and 350 gallons of gas in that period. Miraculously, three council members – Allan Domb, Bobby Henon and Mark Squilla – continued to do their job without city-owned vehicles. When the OfďŹ ce of Fleet Management offered to replace City Council’s last convoy of vehicles – 2008 or later model-year SUVs and sedans – Council President Darrell Clarke was the only one who opted out; records show he still drives a 2015 Chevy Tahoe. “He didn’t want a new car because his used car works perfectly well, save the occasional problem that needs ďŹ xing,â€? Clarke’s spokesperson wrote in an email. Councilman Brian O'Neill has gone back and forth with his government car over the years. After years without one, he opted in on the new eet last year – and used 647 gallons of gas. But O’Neill is getting ready to turn his latest car in again, citing the tax that he still pays on gas mileage. Philly Council members earn annual salaries of $130,000 or more. Their tax returns, however, will show higher incomes if they drive a city-owned vehicle. According to the OfďŹ ce of Fleet Management, both the value of the car and the municipal gasoline are considered fringe beneďŹ ts – and taxable at 5.5 cents per mile driven. Living in his district in far Northeast Philadelphia, O’Neill said the work vehicle complicates his schedule too much, forcing him to separate personal and professional errands while zooming around town. “You have to be really careful and that's where it gets cumbersome,â€? he said. FILM and bar scene in their new neighborhood but noticed the lack of entertainment options. They came up with the idea for Brass Ribbon Cinema while waiting for an Uber. The siblings were headed to a movie theater they felt was much too far from home. A “wouldn’t it be cool if‌â€? conversation turned into a full-edged business plan. Pretty soon, they were sourcing a location and on March 29 announced that in addition to using their own savings and private investor funds, they’ve also launched a Kickstarter campaign in added efforts to make this vision a reality. “I personally love this project because I believe movies have the ability to teach us empathy in a powerful way," said Mairobi. Brass Ribbon Cinema will be housed in half of a 4,000 square-foot warehouse on Sepviva Street. The Luzons leased this portion of the garage from Adam Cramer, the owner of Liberty Vintage Motorcycles, which takes up the second half. Cramer had used a community Facebook page to announce he was looking for a tenant for half of his garage. As a resident of Fishtown for more than a decade, Cramer wanted his garage to beneďŹ t the residents of the neighborhood. The Luzons found his post, visited the space and fell in love with it. Instead of destroying a Fishtown landmark to build their theater, the siblings are able to preserve the space and its history. They will renovate half the garage for the cinema, while the other half will remain a haven for vintage motorcycles. In fact, many of them will be on display for moviegoers to enjoy. When asked what kind of movies the theater will show, Miguel said they’ll focus on second-run ďŹ lms, classic movies and cult favorites. And, when asked about showing new movies, Miguel said: “Licensing costs can be pretty prohibitive, and unless we know we'll have the audience to justify the expense, it can be a gamble, but we're not ruling it out.â€? Mairobi added, “I'm especially excited about having the opportunity to feature Philly-made ďŹ lms on specialty nights. We hope to do this by reaching out to art and ďŹ lm associations in the Philadelphia area.â€? Cinematic experiences matter to the Luzons, as they believe the community can come together over ďŹ lm. They feel the shared stories and experiences can help both old and new residents of Fishtown and Kensington. The siblings hope to give back to the community through outreach efforts, events and hiring locally. Miguel and Mairobi want to be intentional about fostering a culture of inclusion and community. They plan on staying close to and engaged with the community they serve. They hope to tie in Fishtown’s roots as a workingclass neighborhood when designing the theater. “For the design, I imagine a mix of old Hollywood charm with a Fishtown touch. We have every intention to work with local artists to bring this to life,â€? Mairobi said. “I think that if we can create this culture of community, people will also recognize what we're doing here as an asset to the neighborhood,â€? added Miguel. Miguel anticipates the theater having 30 seats, ďŹ ve rows of three on each side of the aisle. While he and Mairobi say they’d love to get a liquor license, they may start by partnering with breweries who have a satellite license to serve alcohol for special events. They may embrace a BYOB policy as well. “It's important for everyone to understand that we are not looking to be the biggest and shiniest new kid on the block. We would rather build a space that feels like it has been there forever,â€? said Mairobi. Their plans for the theater include kidfriendly sing-along movie nights, adultfriendly drink-along BYOB movie nights, free First Friday special screenings, classic/remake double features, concession partnerships with local restaurants, specialty screenings for independent artists, and free on-screen advertising for local charities and nonproďŹ ts. “I think hosting themed nights and events is a fantastic way to stay top-of-mind in the community and arts scene. Between holidayrelated events and First Fridays, I imagine we'll stay pretty busy,â€? says Miguel. Philly punk favorites Low Cut Connie will headline Union Transfer May 17 after jaunts that saw them on display at the annual South by Southwest festival in Austin.

Foot in the gutter South Philly rock staples Low Cut Connie return home for a May show BY TOM BECK

“I

t’s about 70 degrees here,â€? Adam Weiner said from South By Southwest, an annual music conference and festival located in Austin, Texas, to showcase some of the best talents in the industry today. Weiner’s band, Low Cut Connie, has become one of the premier rock and roll acts from Philadelphia – no small feat for a city that has consistently churned out some of the best rock and roll in the world over the past 5-10 years. The band – all of whom except one reside in South Philadelphia – makes its way back to the City of Brotherly Love on May 17 at Union Transfer. Their new album, Dirty Pictures (Part 2), will be released the following day – for most people that is. Those who attend the UT show the night before will get ďŹ rst access to the new album. “Philadelphia gets the ďŹ rst shot,â€? said Weiner. “We'll have the album on sale that night and they'll be one of the ďŹ rst people to buy it.â€? It’s been a long road for Low Cut Connie, whose last album, Dirty Pictures, Part I came out last year. The band has had a

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

myriad of members over the past 10 or so years, but Weiner has been the lone constant. The most recently added member is backup singer Saundra Williams, who had a run singing with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings for about 10 years prior to Jones’ 2016 death. “She's opened up a whole new energy in the band,â€? Weiner said. “I couldn't be happier about it.â€? The more sophisticated sounding Dirty Pictures, Part II isn’t ofďŹ cially the second part of a double album, but Weiner doesn’t really care if you call it that. “It's like ‘Kill Bill,’â€? Weiner said. “Have you seen ‘Kill Bill’? They're really two separate ďŹ lms, but they go together. I think they're very distinct.â€? Weiner calls DPI “grimyâ€? and “messy,â€? while DPII is more “emotionalâ€? and “cathartic.â€? It represents a microcosm of the band’s sound since its ďŹ rst album, Get Out the Lotion, released in 2011. They’ve come a long way since songs like “Shit, Shower and Shave.â€? “Life forces you to mature, I guess,â€? Weiner said. “We still have one foot in the gutter, but I just have this little antenna on the back of my head and when things in the world are full of tension, that comes out in the song. I know that we got this party band tag early, which we wore as a badge of honor, and in many ways we still are, but I think we need to have a little more of a consciousness about what's going on in people's lives.â€? Is it possible the band might lose fans with its matured sound? Sure, Weiner said. But he doesn’t really give a shit. After all, neither did Lou Reed. “I just read the Lou Reed biography – talk about somebody who was completely uncompromising and went places where people feared to tread – and some people went with him and some people didn't,â€? Weiner said. “But you do have to take chances in art or else you should go to law school.â€? Q

Philadelphia drag queen Satine Harlow apologized for for what some deemed a racially insensitive Instagram post taken recently at ICandy, a venue known for its own transgressions when it comes to racial insensitivity.

Stabbed in the back

Drag queen at epicenter of offensive Nazi costume in ICandy performance speaks out BY TIMAREE SCHMIT

I

nitially, the story seemed simple. On the evening of March 12, Philly drag queen Satine Harlow posted a picture of herself, with a swastika taped to the back of her windbreaker, with the words “Heil Hitlerâ€? captioned in bright, colorful lettering. Social media among those in the Gayborhood community reacted immediately. The post, which has since been deleted, was devoid of context. Harlow, it would later be clariďŹ ed, is culturally Jewish and was performing an act to the song “Springtime for Hitlerâ€? from the award-winning satirical musical The Producers, written by Mel Brooks. But for some critics, those were not

$35,/

the only relevant details. Adding to the controversy: the venue for the performance was ICandy, the Gayborhood bar that notoriously came under ďŹ re for accusations of racism after a video of its owner repeatedly saying racial slurs went viral more than a year ago. Though the owner, Darryl DiPiano, issued an apology, ICandy continues to be the subject of protests and boycotts from members of the LGBT community who say the bar has not done enough to address its culture of racism. The controversy was seized on for a variety of symbolic reasons, and at the center was the performer who has self-identiďŹ ed as “the most hated drag queen in Philly.â€? Harlow stood by the act, but in a series of Facebook live videos, apologized to anyone who was hurt.

IMAGE: SATINE HARLOW FACEBOOK PAGE

Harlow issued both a written and video apology on her Facebook page noting other instances far more egregious than her performance.

She also posted that, as a result of the public controversy, she had lost her day job. In an exclusive interview with PW, Harlow, who is 29 and lives in South Philly, said, “I’m not apologizing for my art. I just apologize for anyone who was offended because it wasn’t my intention.â€? She continued, “The whole situation had me blindsided because I’m just confused when we lost the ability to have artistic freedom?â€? Harlow said she had received death threats as a result of the conict, but the majority of people who had contacted her had been supportive. One of Harlow’s critics is fellow Philly drag queen Pretty Girl. In an interview with PW she commented, “I understand performing with controversial themes. I understand the context of The Producers,â€? says the 28-year-old Point Breeze resident who also goes by Daniel James Hart. “But when I go on Instagram stories and [see] the picture of Satine in a crappy red windbreaker with what looked like a swastika at of all places ICandy, it hit me hard. I loved performing there but after ‘the’ event happened, I was 100 percent done with them even though I had friends who worked there.â€? Noting the ongoing issues of racism in the Gayborhood, Hart added, “I do not care what Satine’s number was, it was shock value and just fucked up to post something like that especially with what our community/country is going through.â€? Philly area performers and fans took to Facebook to alternately defend or decry Harlow’s actions. Some drag fans argued that even if Harlow was not Jewish, the artform is supposed to be challenging, even offensive. Others opted to blame the venue for allowing a performance that involved Nazi imagery. This, in turn, led to other commenters questioning the wisdom of letting venues be able to censor artists. In response, others have pointed out venues already do limit artists, either due to legal and insurance constraints or simply maintenance of branding. For Harlow, who has been performing in drag for seven years, her culture and the satiric nature of the piece are the only relevant context. “I chose this song because I’m a Jewish gay man living in the era of Richard Spencer and Steve Bannon‌when the President of the United States refers to neo-Nazis as ‘very ďŹ ne people.’ I believe with every ďŹ ber of my being that I have the right to express my resistance to the resurgence of anti-Semitism with my drag, and that’s exactly what I did Monday night.â€? But what about the argument that working with ICandy is, in and of itself, a perpetuation of white supremacy? Harlow doesn’t think performers should be held accountable, saying, “If anyone has an issue with ICandy or Darryl, they need to discuss it with them directly. I’m a casualty in this war that everyone has against the club. ICandy has been nothing but good to me, and I will continue to work there.â€? Neither the management nor the owner of ICandy responded to PW’s multiple requests for comment. Q TWITTER: @TIMAREE_LEIGH

visited Royal Oak, Michigan, for Savage Love Live at the Royal Oak Music Theatre. I didn’t get to all of the questions submitted by the large and tipsy crowd – a crowd that skipped the Stormy Daniels interview on 60 Minutes to spend the evening with me (so honored, you guys!) – so I’m going to race through as many of the unanswered questions as I can in this week’s column. Here we go‌ Is there a way of breaking my cycle of being totally sexual and into someone for the ďŹ rst six months and then shutting down to the point that I don’t want to be sexual with them at all? What’s wrong with me? Breaking a long-established pattern may require the aid of a therapist who can help you unpack your damage – if, indeed, this is about damage. Because it’s possible this could be the way your libido works; you could be wired for a lifetime of loving, short-term relationships. While our culture reserves its praise for successful long-term relationships (think of those anniversary gifts that increase in value with each passing year), a short-term relationship can be a success. Everyone get out alive? No one traumatized? Were you able to pivot to friendship? Then you can regard that relationship as a success – or all those relationships as successes. How common a kink is it to enjoy seeing your signiďŹ cant other having sex with someone else? Common enough to have numerous different ways of manifesting itself – swinging, hotwiďŹ ng, cuckolding, stag-and-vixen play—and an entire porn genre dedicated to it. Cis, female, 33, poly, bi. I bruise easily, am into BDSM, and love to swim in my condo’s shared pool, where there are many seniors. Any advice for hiding bruises or getting over the embarrassment? Don’t assume the senior citizens in the pool are as naive and/or easily shocked as our ageist assumptions would prompt us to believe. Someone who became a senior citizen today

My husband is a sweet guy who is very good to me. But he is also a gun-toting rightwing conservative, and these days that feels like an insurmountable difference. We have been together for seven years and married for two. No kids yet. I love him – and the thought of leaving him is terrifying – but I honestly don’t know if this is going to work. If you’re afraid to leave him because of those guns, you need to get out. If you’re afraid to leave him because you love him and couldn’t live without him, you might be able to stay. I wouldn’t be able to stay, personally, but you might. Maybe if you make “no political discussions about anything, everâ€? a condition of remaining in the marriage. When you are entering into something new, how do you differentiate between infatuation and real feelings? Infatuation is a real feeling. Only time will tell if other real but more lasting feelings – like, like like, love, lasting love – will surface when those feelings of infatuation inevitably fade. I can easily have an orgasm with toys but I can’t have one with my boyfriend. What gives? Your boyfriend could give you orgasms if you handed him one of those toys, showed him how you use it on yourself, and then guided his hands the ďŹ rst few times he used it on you. Why does my girlfriend enjoy anal sex more than I thought she would? Because she does. Because anal is hot. Because the clit is a great big organ and most of it’s inside the body and anal penetration may stimulate the backside of your girlfriend’s great big clitoris in a way that’s new and different and highly pleasurable and – hey, wait a minute. You aren’t disappointed she’s enjoying anal more than you thought she would, are you? Donald Trump has been impeached, and you get to decide the punishment. So what sex toy gets used on him and who gets to use it? Trump doesn’t deserve a sex toy. Sex toys are for good boys and girls. All Trump deserves is a lump of the coal he loves so much shoved far enough up his ass to serve as a gag. Q Read more at PHILLYWEEKLY.COM

What They Are Saying: “I have used Pat and Kathy to buy 3 houses and sell 2 over the past 18 years. The houses were in Queen Village and Rittenhouse Sq. They showed me as many places as I wanted and brought ideas to me based on what they knew my family needed. I have been very happy with their support, knowledge of the market, and responsiveness. They are local people who know the neighborhoods, process, and options. Also, Joanie in their ofďŹ ce is among the best. I would highly recommend them. In addition, I just like them as honest, good people!â€? Troy Kofroth h.

be applied to the Sheriff’s cost, then to any municipal claims that the City of Philadelphia has on the property. Finally, if a balance still remains, a Sheriff’s Distribution Policy will be ordered and the money will be distributed accordingly. No personal checks, drafts or promises to pay will be accepted in lieu of certified checks, attorney’s checks or money orders made payable to the Sheriff of Philadelphia County. The Sheriff reserves the right to grant further extensions of time to settle and further reserves the right to refuse bids from bidders who have failed to enter deposits on their bids, failed to make settlement, or make fraudulent bids, or any other behavior which causes disruption of the Sheriff Sale. Said bidders shall be so refused for the sale in which said behavior occurred and for said further period of time as the Sheriff in his discretion shall determine. The Sheriff will not acknowledge a deed poll to any individual or entity using an unregistered fictitious name and may, at his discretion, require proof of identity of the purchaser or the registration of fictitious names. The bid of an unregistered fictitious name shall be forfeited as if the bidder failed to meet the terms of sale. All bidders are advised to remain at the sale until after the last property is sold. The Sheriff reserves the right to re-sell any property at any time before the end of the sale, upon the successful bidders’ failure to tender the required deposit. The Sheriff reserves the right to postpone or stay the sale of any property in which the attorney on the writ has not appeared and is not present at the sale. Prospective purchasers are directed to the Web site of the Philadelphia Bureau of Revision of Taxes, (BRT) brtweb. phila.gov for a fuller description of the properties listed. Properties can be looked up by the BRT number – which should be cross checked with the address. Prospective purchasers are also directed to the Room 154 City Hall, 215686-1483 and to its website philadox.phila.gov and to its website at http://philadox.phila.gov where they can view the deed to each individual property and find the boundaries of the property. PROSPECTIVE PURCHASERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR DETERMINING THE NATURE, LOCATION, CONDITION AND BOUNDARIES OF THE PROPERTIES THEY SEEK TO PURCHASE. The BRT # refers to a unique number assigned by the City Bureau of Revision of Taxes to each property in the City for the purpose of assessing it for taxes. This number can be used to obtain descriptive information about the property from the BRT website. Effective Date: July 7, 2006 NOTICE OF SCHEDULE OF DISTRIBUTION The Sheriff will file in his office, The Land Title Building, 100 South Broad Street, 5th Floor, a Schedule of Distribu-

Distribution will be made in accordance with the Schedule unless exceptions are filed thereto within ten (10) days thereafter. The name first appearing in each notice is that of the defendant in the writ whose property is being sold. All Writs are Writs of Executions. The letters C.P., Court of Common Pleas; O.C., Orphans’ Court; Q.S., Court of Quarter Sessions; C.C., County Court indicate the Court out of which the writ of execution issues under which the sale is made: S. 1941. 223. means September Term, 1941. 223, the term and number of the docket entry; the figures following show the amount of debt; and the name following is that of the attorney issuing the writ. Attention is called to the provisions of Act No.104, approved July 27, 1955, which requires owners of properties which are used, designed or intended to be used by three or more families, or of commercial establishments which contain one or more dwelling units, to deliver to the buyers of such properties a use registration permit at the time of settlement, under certain terms and conditions. Sheriff Sales are not subject to provisions of the said Act and the Sheriff will, therefore, not deliver use registration permits in connection with any sales conducted by him. Very truly yours, JEWELL WILLIAMS Sheriff City and County of Philadelphia
