Chinese Lantern Festival

P

hilly’s historical Franklin Square celebrates its 10th birthday this summer with the Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival, an exciting seven-week nightly spectacular inspired by the traditional lantern festivals held to celebrate Chinese New Year. Alongside Square staples such as the carousel and mini golf, visitors will be treated to a 200 foot Chinese dragon, over 25 captivating flower displays, and lanterns made special in China for the event. Guests will also be able to enjoy daily performances, crafts, and culturally inspired cuisine, all curated by local chefs and artists.

The Lantern Festival is a Chinese tradition celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunar calendar to mark the last day of the New Year celebration. For the next seven weeks, displays in the shapes of dragons, pagodas, and terracotta warriors will illuminate the night every evening at Franklin Square. This is the first time a lantern festival of its kind will be displayed in the Northeast United States.

“We would like to think that Benjamin Franklin would have been amazed at the lights of the event,” says Ai Lou, CEO of Tian Yu Arts & Culture.

boasting 15,000 LED lights.

“When Tian Yu contacted us we thought what a great way to celebrate,” says Amy Little, President and CEO of Historic Philadelphia. “By bringing the connection that we’ve always had with Chinatown here, we get to celebrate this wonderful cultural light [festival] now to June 12.”

The festival also includes the dramatic performance art of face-changing, the art of instantaneously changing vividly colored masks passed down through generations in Sichuan opera.

Artists also demonstrate skills with traditional Chinese crafts like the ocarina and word sculpting on stone that have been passed down from generation to generation.

“When Franklin Square opened in 2006 we were so excited to have something like this in our backyard,” says Carol Wong, Director of the Chinatown Learning Center. “From early on they’ve had Tai Chi in the morning and we have schools like mine coming here to enjoy the park. Patience is Key The Early Adopter Program of the Septa Key Card arrives soon.

I

magine this. It’s eight in the morning and you have to be at work by 9 a.m.

Not too hard to picture, right? Which means you have to shower, get dressed, do your hair or makeup if needed, and stop by 7-Eleven for your bag of tokens—all in one hour or less. Avoiding being late seems near impossible, but after June 13, you can skip the trip to the “Sev” and just reload your brand spanking new SEPTA Key Card before running out the door.

On April 15, at a routine meeting between SEPTA and Xerox it was decided that the Early Adopter Program will begin on Mon., June 13, 2016. The Early Adopter Program will include up to 10,000 transit customers who can purchase either a weekly or monthly TransPass using their SEPTA Key Card.

The SEPTA transit customers interested in being part of the Early Adopter Program can purchase a Key Card at select stations on the Market Frankford Line, Broad Street Line, or the SEPTA headquarters at 1234 Market Street. The SEPTA Key Card website lists the selected station locations and the transit system modes the Key Card can be used on including buses, trolleys, trackless trolleys, the Market Frankford Line, Broad Street Line, and Norristown High Speed Line.

SEPTA has come up with different ways to reload the card that will be more convenient for transit customers. The new fare kiosks will be available for people to purchase and reload their Key Card, as well as the future option of just purchasing one ride, called a “Quick Trip,” with cash. The Key Card will eventually have the ability to be linked up to a bank account with an auto-renewal option. Additionally, customers will be able to reload their card by going on the SEPTA Key Card website or calling the SEPTA Key Card call center.

“They’ll have the ability to reload their weekly passes or monthly passes,” Andrew Busch, SEPTA spokesman says about the functionality of the SEPTA Key Card for the Early Adopter Program. “We’re just going to do the passes, but certainly once we get moving with it, we’ll bring in the stored value component, and that’s good for folks. You know regular riders or even occasional riders don’t use a pass because it’s a better economic value for them to use tokens or some kind of combination of that.”

Busch says the stored value won’t be available until after the Early Adopter Program to make sure people are comfortable with the new system and also to fix any glitches that they might encounter.

The best news besides the long-awaited launch of the Key Card is the delayed fare increase. Rejoice Philadelphians, because

fare prices will not be increased until at least July, 2017.

“We usually do fare increases every three years,” Busch says. “This would have been the year that we were due for that, but we decided that because there’s going to be a lot of questions about the key launch—and the fare increase would have been going into effect at roughly the same time—we just thought that would be too much to put on customers at once.”

SEPTA transit customers may have noticed the new equipment that has been installed at several subway stations. The Key Card website currently shows an installation report of 1,607 surface vehicle fareboxes updated to red validator pads—the device used to scan the SEPTA Key Card— 187 new turnstiles, 175 new fare kiosks, and 20 new ADA gates.

Back in 2007, the plan of a “smart card” replacing subway tokens and then eventually expanding to buses, trolleys and regional rail was announced. The following year SEPTA put out a bid so contractors could start bidding at a chance to be the prime contractor on the project.

Busch explained that SEPTA is a public agency fueled by taxpayer money which means they had to pick the lowest bidder who could handle the project. In November of 2011, SEPTA announced the prime contractor on the project would be Xerox with other subcontractors, including Mastercard.

At some time around 2013/2014, the Key Card turned from a really cool concept into a cross between urban legend and epic myth, like a subway unicorn gone bad.

Anxious customers went from curious to frustrated to cynical over the all-too-frequent delays of its roll-out.

“Certainly some folks have been a little frustrated with the pace we’re moving at, but we think if we had rushed to get it out sooner then there would have been some things that might not have been ready and that would have exacerbated their frustrations,” Busch says. “So folks right now that we’re hearing from want first and foremost information.”

Hopefully, the official announcement of the Early Adopter Program will help ease the frustration of customers who have been waiting for the card for years now. The Early Adopter Program will be available to any transit customer who is willing to try it out, there is no application process.

“We think the Early Adopter Program is going to be the folks who really want to get on board with using the Key. They’re going to have a chance to do it and then we’re also going to be able to get some valuable feedback that’ll help us improve it for the larger audience of users,” Busch says. n

WHATEVER IT TAKES! As I come into Universal Audenried Charter High School, the state of Pennsylvania’s only Career Technical Certified Charter high school, after a meeting, the banging and sounds of electrical saws pierce my ears. I walk into our automotive and electrical shop and from a distance, I can see our senior construction class working away on a food truck for a local community member. The teacher waves and shouts “Hey Principal Diavua.” Motivated by a late spring deadline, the students and their teacher are making process.

Later on that day, during lunch, students in our culinary program are delivering pizzas to teachers and faculty.

The previous two days the students budgeted, took orders, and made meals for the “Café”.

After lunch, I assist with transition on the third floor, home to our STEM Academy. A group of young ladies walk with me and discuss the details of the Leukemia walk they are planning through their Health Related Technology class, where many have earned their Certified Nursing Assistant credential.

As we walk downstairs, we walk by a group of freshmen rushing to class for the fear of being late. We stop near the main office, where the photos of over 50 seniors matriculating to 4-year colleges and universities grace the walls.

There are several arguments to be made around the renewal of Universal Audenried Charter High School. While I have described a typical day at Universal Audenried, it is important to remember that Universal Audenried is not a typical charter school. We operate as a comprehensive neighborhood high school. Our students enroll grade levels behind in math and English and 26% receive special education services.

Despite these challenges, we have made gains where most other neighborhood schools have not. Our SAT scores have increased 100 points in the last year. On the 2016 NOCTI exam for students’ Career and Technical Education programs, we had 56 out of 105 score competent or advance. For comparison, Dobbins High had 62 out of 106 competent or advance in 2015. The difference is that we accomplish this as a neighborhood school with no admissions requirements. We have increased both college acceptance rates and certifications; that make students employable immediately after high school, like our cohort of students who earned their Certified Nursing Assistant certificate and those who have their Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10.

The most compelling argument to renew Universal Audenried is made by the School District of Philadelphia itself.

The district’s report card, called the School Progress Report (SPR), ranks Universal Audenried’s SPR score 8 out of 26 peer schools. Those peer schools include a mix of city neighborhood schools and city-wide Career and Technical Education schools, which admit scholars based on criteria. Furthermore, one of the renaissance charter high schools being recommended to receive a five-year renewal has a score of 12% on the SPR and are ranked 14 out of 26 schools in the same peer group.

One of two conclusions can be drawn from the aforementioned data. The first being that Universal Audenried’ s academic rating and renewal recommendation needs to be changed by the Charter Schools Office when seen in comparison to its peers. The other conclusion is that the School Progress Report is an extremely flawed measuring tool if the Charter Schools Office is not giving it significance in evaluating charters. That, however, calls into question, the consistency with which the School District of Philadelphia evaluates all of it schools. With that in mind, we ask that the School Reform Commission investigate and take a deep look at the inconsistency with which Universal Audenried has been rated. Universal Audenried has made progress in multiple areas Universal Audenried is not simply a school, but a community of students, parents, teachers, and community members who want to see our students have more and do better. As our scholars say, at Universal Audenried “we do the most!” Universal and the leadership team at Audenried has created opportunities for our scholars in the Grey’s Ferry and Point Breeze communities. The Radicalisation of Bradley Manning

om Reing, the artistic director of Inis Nua Theatre, is sitting in the back of The Drake in the dark. All that lights his face now is the glow of his directorial team’s laptops and a gloomy blue hue emanating from the small stage. With a wall of video monitors specked with images of bloodshed and camouflage behind his actors and the sound of a live, mournful violinist before them, Reing’s pensive, abstract conceptualization of The Radicalisation of Bradley Manning—an American premiere for Welsh playwright Tim Price—unfurls in a most unusual fashion. With all of what Reing calls his “actrons”—white, black, female, male—taking turns at playing Bradley and/or Chelsea Manning, the story of leaking 250,000 classified military documents to WikiLeaks finds itself mixing fiction and fact, his period in the armed forces, his youth in Oklahoma, his jail time as a woman and his teen years in West Wales. The latter of these most interests the Irish-Welsh theater maven Reing and the hometown playwright Price who says of Manning’s life-shaping time in Wales, that his country has a long and rich radical tradition. “All the things Conservative politicians in the U.K. trump as ‘British values’ and they still all voted against those rights,” says Price. “It was working men and women from Wales, Scotland and North of England who protested, marched and were shot, killed and imprisoned until eventually the Government relented and gave us things like secrecy to vote, full emancipation, wages for politicians and women’s right to vote. Maybe Chelsea didn’t have a choice but to do what she did, because of where she came from.”

Reing didn’t know so very much about Manning beyond the headlines. He laughs about how it takes a Welshman to read America the riot act, envies London’s The Guardian for having Chelsea as a columnist (“traitor here, hero there”) and thinks of Radicalisation as Inis Nua’s biggest production yet in its history, considering its sizable cast, crew, lighting frippery and dashing fight choreography.

For Price however, Radicalisation is just another forward-moving walk in the politicized park for a writer steeped in protest marches, angry letters to the newspapers and a childhood spent in the Welsh Valleys during the 1984-85 miners’ strike, “the closest the U.K. has gotten to civil war in modern history,” he says.

Known primarily for the lithe I’m With the Band and smart, poetic family dramas For Once and Salt, Root and Roe, his political muscle got its initial dramatic workout when he came across Chelsea’s story. “Only then did I realize that maybe, my creative output could also serve my political idea,” says Price.

Price’s original production of Radicalisation was performed in Chelsea’s old school in Wales, where part of the play is set. There, “lots of people who I have huge amounts of respect for” travelled to Wales to see the avant-garde

theatrical; peace protesters like Ben Griffin (the founder of U.K. Veterans for Peace), and Ciaran O’Reilly (a Ploughshares protester who disabled a B52 bomber and was imprisoned for it). “They were immediately on their feet when the lights came up and I will never forget that, because these were people who spend their lives on pavements, holding placards and resisting as a way of life, rather than the rest of us who tweet and sign petitions and don’t disrupt our lives for our ideas. They live their life the way Chelsea does, and so having their endorsement was a significant event for me.”

On being drawn to the art of theatrical dialogue and his preoccupation with the fast fusion or furious words, and rapid fire conversations, Price gracefully confesses to being a recovering stammerer who has spent his life replaying conversations in his head. “The French have a phrase for it,” he says—‘l’esprit de’scalier’—the wit of the stairs, that feeling of knowing exactly what you should have said after the event while you’re walking down the stairs,” he recalls. “I think maybe that’s been my feeling my whole life, and writing dramatically is some kind of compensation for that.”

The drama of Radicalisation and of Manning was a fascination of Price’s since Wikileaks, but, like many of us in 2010, the author couldn’t quite understand what exactly was going on. “I was reading all these documents … and didn’t appreciate their value, until they released the ‘Collateral Murder’ video which Chelsea leaked.

Price was as stunned then, as playgoers will be next week. “This was evidence of statesponsored murder, evidence that the U.S. military had lied about and covered up, and there was someone on the inside trying the get the truth out. We are a cine-literate generation, so much of our consumption is the moving image, a dry text-based firsthand account of that killing would not have had the impact that video did. It was the juxtaposition of soldiers’ actions with the casual nature of their words that was so chilling.”

Ladies Night

The Demented Dolls of Sideshow prove getting freaky isn’t just for the guys.

“T

his show is a collection of the most diverse and demented women in the world.” A quote like that can only make you want to know more, right? Spaghetti Anaelle, performer with The Demented Dolls of Sideshow continues, “As far as we’re aware, this is the first all-female, all-sideshow touring company in the world.”

Philly knows a thing or two about freak shows. Second and Chestnut at 2 a.m. on the weekend notwithstanding, the city has a vital sideshow scene with Squidling Brothers and Olde City Sideshow performing around town for years. But a rather unique troupe is making its Philly debut this May. The Demented Dolls of Sideshow has a stop at THE CEC on May 6 and then a return visit later in the month to Connie’s Ric Rac, all part of The Demented Dolls’ first U.S. tour.

“We came together not specifically to make a political statement or anything,” explains Jenn Neal aka Jenn O. Cide, one of the performers who comprise the allfemale collective of six international performers. “We’ve all worked in the male dominated industry of side show on predominantly male tours and we all have kind of gone, ‘Man, I wonder what it would just be like to tour with all women and just leave out the tough guy ego BS.’” And so six sideshow women have come together, staplers and blow torches, swords and corsets in tow to make a few select audiences in the States cringe and stare in disbelief. With performers from the U.S., Norway, Israel, France and the Netherlands, Neal says the troupe is a wide representation of the different types of sideshow that happen around the world, explaining that the American style of sideshow differs in many ways from that of its European cousin. She explains that many American performers do demonstration type acts, where they describe what they’re going to do and then do it.

“Even if it’s the most fantastic stunt, it’s not presented with full choreography and costume and character, whereas the European style has that flavor,” says Neal.

The Demented Dolls, she says will be much different then what Americans are typically used to seeing from a sideshow.

“Our presentation is definitely different, partially because we have performers from Europe, where their presentation style is much more theatrical, and not to put down American style, but they choreograph pieces to music that are usually very character driven, it’s a minor difference, but if you’ve seen American sideshow and then see European you’ll notice the difference,” Neal says.

And so far, according to Neal, the experiment of creating an all-female troupe has gone off as smooth as a sword swallower with a dagger. Last year’s European tour was not only a success, she says the allfemale troupe created the environment for the least stressful and most calming tour of Neal’s career. And even though you might see some corsets and cleavage, the emphasis is on feats of the human body, not sex appeal. “We don’t do any burlesque,” says Neal, stating simply that’s because the women in her troupe are not burlesque dancers, but circus performers trained to do stunts, not strip teases. “If you see anyone taking their clothes off during the show, it’s to remove an article of clothing so they can do a stunt.” Everything from the booking to the management and the publicity is all female-driven in The Demented Dolls troupe and they wouldn’t want it any other way. “It’s not like we have a guy behind the scenes cracking a whip and telling us what to do,” says Neal.

“And this is going to sound really shitty and disparaging, but a lot of times you’ll see a girl presented, ‘Ta da, here’s some boobs.’ [She’ll] come out, do a what we call, ‘girlfriend stunt,’ that can be learned in two

minutes flat that doesn’t take extreme skill or isn’t high on the danger factor and the big stunts are reserved for the guys. But in our show, every single girl is doing heavy, heavy stunts.” Neal says there are no throwaway stunts just to look pretty in a Demented Dolls show. “That’s part of why we all wanted to do this. To not be presented as a sexual object that’s wearing a skimpy costume and just doing a small stunt. We wanted to show that women are just as powerful as men.”

Even as counter-culture as sideshows may be, they still hold somewhat firm to traditional gender roles, with show-stopper acts of danger typically reserved for male performers. Think of “the bearded lady” sitting in repose being gawked at, or “the tattooed woman” who simply needed to show her inked skin. Those were weird enough to earn a woman a spot in a sideshow not that many decades ago. “I think there’s a lot of carry over,” adds Neal. “We’ve had incredibly good fortune with a lot of women coming up to us to say, ‘Thank you so much for showing that you don’t have to take your clothes off to be an awesome performer, you don’t have to be dating somebody to get on stage.’”

Based out of Las Vegas, Neal says she’s been living out of her suitcase for the last few years traveling all over the world. “It’s blood, sweat and tears, you have to love it to put up with all the BS that comes with any artistic endeavor, much less show business, much less freak-show business.”

Beginning with fire tricks and sideshow stunts some 20 years ago, Neal has worked as a sound engineer, tour manager and production designer, outside of her sideshow tours. She says that although performances might look like a crazy spectacular life, mastering a stunt involves many hours spent alone, attempting things over and over to hone a technique. “It basically comes down to teaching yourself and getting comfortable and familiar with how your body reacts, and the ability to control mind over matter and calm the body.”

That labor of love Neal speaks of is evident in the undertaking of this U.S. tour.

There are significant challenges to touring in the U.S. versus Europe. Cities aren’t sandwiched as closely together in the states and venues are not set up to pay a guarantee to a sideshow act, let alone spring for accommodations and food as is the case in Europe.

“Unfortunately it’s still incredibly expensive to bring six international performers together. Touring the states is not even as close to financially productive as touring in Europe, so we have to keep our time in the states limited per tour,” says Neal. She says that ideally The Demented Dolls would be touring the entire country throughout the summer, but none of the members can take that much time away from the more lucrative gigs they can land outside the U.S. Why is the U.S. not as supportive an environment for sideshow performances? Neal isn’t sure. “I don’t want to make it sound like Europeans just come out and throw money at us, but the institution of supporting subculture goes deeper, maybe because it’s been around longer. I don’t know, but we’re planning on losing quite a bit of money on this [U.S.] tour.” So why do it? Part of it is investing in the future of the group, building the name recognition and using it as a stepping stone Neal says for future tours. But the bigger part of that motivation appears to be wanting to show American audiences what Europeans have been witnessing for many tours. “This is definitely a labor of love and we can’t wait to bring the madness and mayhem to Philly.” n

It was National Pet Day and with a backdrop of adoptable kitties decked out in hoodies for the occasion, we sat down with the stars, and things didn’t go exactly as planned...

So we’re with Philadelphia Weekly, I’m sure you’re familiar with us.

Meth: Oh absolutely, Philadelphia Weekly, I get it every week.

Jordan: I get it once a day.

Kevin: So first, wanted to ask you Jordan, with Kenan and Kel being your biggest idol growing up, did they help you get into sketch comedy?

Jordan: They actually manage us now.

Kevin: Oh, really, that’s what Kel’s up to?

Jordan: They discovered us and they put us out there.

Kevin: How long have you been in sketch comedy now? I know you have a long history with MadTV. Jordan: It’s on Wikipedia somewhere isn’t it? You gotta do a little research.

Kevin: Well, this is for the audience I’m asking, they might not know.

Jordan: Alright, let me think about it. I’ve been in comedy for, we started MadTV together in 2003 and before that we just been grinding on the comedy thing.

Jackie: See, I told you to ask the Heathcliff/Garfield question.

Jordan: Yeah, you blew it.

Kevin: Well, Heathcliff or Garfield?

Jordan: That was the question?

Jackie: That was my question.

Kevin: Like if you had to choose a cat.

Jackie: What? It was a good question.

Jordan: You know, I respect both cats.

With Keegan and I, I’m like the Garfield to his Odie. He has a lot of energy. I used to wear some Garfield shirts when I was a kid. Heathcliff’s kind of the bobo Garfield.

Meth: I’m gonna go with Heathcliff because Heathcliff whoops ass.

Kevin: Your name is Cheddar in the film.

You have a background in The Wire as Cheese. What’s your favorite cheese to, um, snack on?

Meth: I’m sharp cheddar.

Kevin: Sharp cheddar. How about yourself?

Jordan: Myself? I’m a little Truffle Tremor, you ever check that one out?

Kevin: No. I’ve heard of the butter truffle, sometimes on a nice steak.

Jordan: You have to try that Truffle Tremor then. It’s a real thing. I don’t know why Meth: (laughing hysterically, covers face with Yankees hat) Is that some real shit?

Jordan: That’s some real shit. He thought I was doing one of my NFL names or something. Truffle Tremor.

Kevin: I heard you do those with Anthony on 97.5 so I wasn’t going to try to bum any of those. So, what’s your favorite memories of Philly?

Jordan: Just right now, when you asked me about Kenan and Kel, that was it.

Meth: Ishkabibbles, now I want my free sandwich. Every time I go in there.

Kevin: Yeah, they’re a good venue on South Street. Now speaking of Kenan and Kel, did you also audition for that when you were trying to get into acting? They were on Nickelodeon.

Meth: What’s Nickelodeon?

Kevin: It used to be Channel 13. Then 33.

Meth: They play that shit on BET? What they got on this Nickelodeon?

Kevin: They had a show called All That years ago. Spongebob.

Meth: I know Spongebob. That’s my jawn... Yeah Nickelodeon.

Kevin: Any big plans coming up?

Jordan: We’re going to see what happens. I’m working on the Tracy Morgan pilot. I’ve been having meetings with him and he’s just the funniest dude I’ve ever met. I just directed a horror movie.

Kevin: I read about that.

Jordan: See you did read something.

Kevin: Yeah but this was all for the audience, to get introduced to you. They don’t know the real Jordan.

Jordan: That’s why you’re supposed to be like, ‘He’s been in comedy for 21 years.’

Kevin: That’s boring.

Meth: I see they sent down the professionals.

Kevin: I do open mics.

Meth: No, you’re poised don’t get me wrong.

Kevin: Who’s funnier in the relationship, you or Chelsea (Peretti)?

Jordan: I mean, are you kidding me?

Kevin: Well I would say her.

Meth: (Laughs) Jordan: My girl is the funniest.

Kevin: You guys must be one of the funniest couples in Hollywood. Are you Hollywood now?

Jordan: I don’t know. April 29 we cross over into Hollywood.

Kevin: I did not expect.

Jordan: Such an awesome action sequence?

Kevin: Yeah, I saw the trailer, I didn’t know what I was getting into.

Jordan: That’s a good spoiler.

Meth: I keep hearing about this opening scene. I haven’t seen the movie yet and this is the third time I’m hearing about the opener.

Jordan: I’m a big Keanu fan.

Kevin: Is that where the name came from, Keanu Reeves?

Jordan: Um, no. Keanu Goldstein. He’s, ah, he’s in real estate, an agent in Florida.

No, of course it was Keanu. This movie is a love letter to movies. We’re total nerds, we’re movie fans, we love action, this is just all little pieces of all our favorite things in there.

Kevin: Any big plans for you coming up?

Meth: Ah, I got something coming up.

Kevin: Wu-tang related?

Meth: They’re writing How High 2. But they’ve been writing How High Part 2 for about 10 years now. Ok? So when I see it, I’ll actually believe it. But in the immediate future, I have a few projects that I don’t want to jinx, but I did shoot a pilot for VH1.

Kevin: Has Doug Benson ever asked you to go on Getting Doug with High.

Jordan: I would love to do that show. It seems perfect for me.

Kevin: Yeah, it’s right up your guys’ alley.

Meth: What’s that?

Jordan: You get high and watch movies.

Kevin: No with Getting Doug, you sit like this and just smoke pot for an hour and he just asks you questions that are weedrelated and you basically just go on riffs.

It’s a video podcast.

Meth: I’ll smoke his ass…

Kevin: What’s your favorite strain, are you a sativa or indica?

Meth: Yeah, I’m a sativa. I like to be able to function. Especially before a show, smoke a little sativa. n

Santigold comes home M

ount Airy native and musician Santi “Santigold” White has exhilarated audiences for more than a decade thanks to unique ways of creating music and a bold taste for the extraordinary.

With a list of collaborators ranging from Sri Lankan dancehall queen M.I.A. to musical super producer Pharrell Williams, Santigold is more than a popular face in the crowd. She is one of the defining voices of a generation.

In anticipation of her upcoming May 1 show at the Theater of the Living Arts, Santigold took time out to discuss her latest album, 99¢, her punk process and why social media is whack.

how has your artistry and preparation for 99¢ changed since your last album released?

It always seems like real long from the time my last records come out to the time the next record comes, but it’s really like I never take a break from it. I toured until 2013 and then I had a baby, and then I started making my record basically in 2014. There wasn’t a big gap in me working on music. It’s not like I came back to it after a hiatus. My point is, the making of the music is still very different. From 2012 to now, it hasn’t changed that much. We’re still very much in this formula pop market. Pop is still in a very formula era, cookie-cutter era.

Even though the definition of what kind of music is pop is broad and all kinds of music is included, it kind of all has to sound the same. We don’t have a variation of pop.

That’s the climate I was making the record in. I will say since I started in 2008, I feel like there’s been a change in that people are more used to genre. People don’t care as much about, “Oh I listen to this kind of music” or “I listen to that kind of music” and I think that’s largely because of the Internet and because of streaming and how people find music now. It’s kind of all there and you don’t go in a record store and go to a section and choose. I think for me, and for the kind of music I make, that’s cool, and it kind of works for me because I feel like there’s an opportunity for me to get a broader audience as people are more familiar with the idea of jumping around genres, even if there are not a lot of artists that jump around genres within the same record. I feel like it’s a good time for me musically.

For 99¢, you blend genres ranging from punk rock to electronic music with several new collaborators. What was your creative process like for this record?

As far as my process for making this record, it was also different than my past two records because I feel like I worked with a lot of new producers who I never worked with before. In the past, I kind of worked with a core team that I’ve really known for a long time. On this project, I decided to work with all new producers. And it was great actually, I really lucked out. People like Patrick Berger, Rostam Batmanglij and Justin Raisen. It was just really great because I felt like I found producers who are really knowledgeable in so many different genres that I like.

Like we could go from punk to reggae to hip-hop, and it’s all in a hip-hop blanket, to African and still turn it into a pop song. And it’s hard to find people that are well versed in doing that. I’m so picky about my sound. cess.” And that’s what happened. And I also just had my baby so I had all of this joy and hope, so I wanted to talk about really important things and messages that people needed to hear, like narcissism and consumption but I wanted to do it in a way that was music that you’d want to listen to, light bright fun music. I think all of those factors helped me do that.

I think we’re kind of in a time where there’s so much stuff going on that’s really heavy and dark and challenging, I just felt like if I wanted to get people to listen right now I had to use a different approach.

Does social media keep you connected to your fans?

I’m not very good at [social media]. [Laughs] If you don’t have any social media presence, it hurts. But it’s so time consuming and every couple of months is some new thing. It’s always changing. But it’s so much. It’s so time-consuming and it’s not really my personality and it’s not really the most natural thing for me to be all the time on the phone instead of present in the moment. So I tried to use other forms of technology this time in my creative process that I felt were equally fresh and exciting and engaging. Technology is so broad, and we’re kind of in the Wild West of technology right now. I tried to find a way that was more exciting and interesting to me than social media. So in the “Can’t Get Enough of Myself” video I tried to use technology in new ways to create new experiences that are virtual and show an interesting way to engage with my fans and have them feel like a part of my project in an exciting and fresh way than just through social media. Not saying that I don’t agree with social media, but try to create without an approach in using social media as well. I think there is so much about technology and social media that is flawed and dangerous, mainly that people have a hard time making a distinction between what’s virtual and what’s real, in regards to themselves and other people and their lives and what’s normal. Even in electing a

president, people are thinking about electing a virtual reality instead of a person. I think with technology and the ability to hide behind this thing that makes you feel anonymous and unaccountable can be dangerous and that is something I wanted to explore on my record as well.

a fun thing about listening to your records is that we’re not getting the media’s contemporary portrayal of the black woman, but we’re actually getting to see a free being that happens to be a black woman that is sharing her innermost thoughts, ideas and feelings with the world. how much has afrofuturism influence affected the way in which you create?

Wow. I’ve never even used the term “afrofuturism,” but I love what you just said. I think you are exactly right about how I approach my creativity and my process and my existence in this world. The main word that used is “free.” If Afrofuturism is freedom to exist outside of a box and make your own rules and make people talk about what’s right, then I love afrofuturism. Especially as a black woman who’s felt at different points in her life how much people have tried to pull me back in line. I’ve always said that’s the punk rock in me. [Laughs] My motto has always been “I do what I want,” and that’s how I’ve been since I was a child. I guess as a kid I was super-influenced by punk rock and bands like Bad Brains, which is this black hardcore band who invented hardcore. In a genre where there were not a whole lot of black faces, they created a whole new style.

As a child I was influenced by people like that. So I can write my own rules and I can write my own definitions of who I am and who I want to be. It takes a deep-rooted confidence consistently, especially in this day and age where people are writing crazy things on the Internet, you have to constantly return to and be grounded in your confidence. If that is the future of our world, then that would be wonderful. n

Ben Folds’ Crossover Career I

people that want to come to the city to have major international meetings and banks follow, people follow. What I look for is someone who recognizes the economic value of the arts. If they can’t recognize the value there, it tells me they are looking at a very, very small part of a bottom line sheet that does not represent real life. So the candidate that understands that is far more pragmatic than it seems, because what we’re trained is “over here with a slide ruler making this work” and we’re going to put this kid’s head in a book until he fucking gets this math. All these sort of brutal ways of establishing education and establishing this economy. But life doesn’t work like that, it’s a big holistic thing. Who wants to go to some shitty town that has nothing artistic to have their big douche meeting? The douches want to go to places that have pretty buildings and good music, you know, they want that too.

f you haven’t listened to Ben Folds since angst-ridden moments spent singing along to “Brick,” there’s a whole lot to catch up on. For those who have kept up with the musician past his Ben Folds Five days, it’s no surprise that he’s bringing a classical chamber orchestral group with him to The Fillmore on May 6. We caught up with Folds to discuss his crossover success with his recent release, So There. The conversation began with your standard concert talk, but Folds, as you’ll find, has lots of opinions on everything from music funding to why America’s symphonies are fucking themselves over.

What can we expect from your show at the Fillmore?

Currently I’m touring with yMusic and they are a small chamber group from New York. Mostly you’d associate them with classical music, but they do a lot of rock records too. We’ve been having a great tour. Last year we toured on the album some and I’m just putting together a live 10-inch vinyl version of the tour from last year.

That’s left out of the discussion a lot, what would our cities look like without those elements of art?

What makes them different to play with than other groups you’ve been with?

Well it’s not really been done in this way before. I mean, it’s a rock show with, they don’t have anything that resembles bass in the band, if you know what a classical sextet is like, that’s my rock band. Extremely different, but it really works.

Rock music periodically crosses paths with what we know as classical... When you think about the tradition of the ‘70s songwriter, which is still with us, it’s quite based on Chopin. And a lot of rock ‘n’ roll, especially more metal, angular stuff certainly draws from everything from Stravinsky to Wagner. If you listen to Metallica, you’re hearing a lot of Deutsch in that. So I think this, the instrumentation is radical, but the shows haven’t felt radical at all. Usually that’s my favorite kind of radical, it doesn’t beat its chest and say, “This is the most different thing in the world,” but when you really break it down it’s never been done like that before.

One really proud moment for me was playing Bonnaroo. That’s a festival I regularly perform at, up to 60,000 people at this thing. And to take a classical sextet on stage when everyone is blasting you out with lots of bass and sound, that’s not possible with this. You put up a couple of microphones and it’s real quiet. We’re talking some kind of ‘60s folk festival here with one little amp on stage. It has a lot of integrity and it’s very acoustic, but to have them come out and play what we might call a neo-classical piece... the place went nuts. It was awesome. There were like 50,000 people listening to every note of that. I was proud of that. I was equally proud of the audience. We try to present such a picture that everything is dumbed down and while there may be some truth to that on some level, it’s really heartening to look out and see 50,000 faces after sunset engaged in that kind of music. Plays well against this sort of narrative that young people don’t understand complex music. This is seriously complex music, what they play. There’s also a thread between what they do and modern classical music and other forms of instrumental music like dubstep. That has something to do with ambient music, what we used to call “techno music,” because there’s always some bit of the instrumental hit tradition going on in music. There’s always room for music that doesn’t have words in it to engage you in another way.

Which is why I felt pretty safe to play a piano concerto on my record. When I was a kid there was always instrumental hits on the radio and now when you think about it, that’s what Skrillex has been.

Do you have any fond memories of playing Philly?

Philly was one of the first places I could get a gig. My band played Khyber Pass for probably 25 people each time we played there. We loaded the piano ourselves. A baby grand piano through that teenie crazy entrance, around the bar. And I remember—I can’t call this a fond memory, but definitely right there in the center—I remember playing Philadelphia on my birthday, which was September 12, 2001, the day after September 11th. We didn’t cancel, I think we must have been one of the only gigs that didn’t cancel. So a lot of people drove down from New York. A lot of stories from that day, a pretty intense day. And that was all spent on South Street around the TLA.

And people came out?

Oh, absolutely, it was jammed. I mean I viewed the whole thing slightly different than my peers did. I thought it was an important thing for people to have gatherings and have a part of their life that had nothing to do with that stuff. So I was always really not that enthusiastic about people who would come on stage as openers and give a speech about all that shit. And that’s the way I saw it. I just remember one car load of kids who had been downtown, like running from what they thought was the building falling, but it was just a big plume of smoke.

They needed to think about something else. That gig was particularly a standout. Hard to play, real difficult to play, because you don’t what to look like, “Hey! I’m happy, everything’s happy!” Because you’ll look like a dick. But it’s also really hard to maintain. At the time that happened that was really heavy stuff.

I see you’re a bernie Sanders supporter? How do you think art informs politics and vice versa?

Art is a real motivator, and so when you’re talking about a realistic economy, there is no economy without motivation. Look at the artistic value of New York City and the

Yeah, it’s something I do a lot of talking about when I play with symphony orchestras. The point of it being, that symphony orchestras need the support, but people need the symphony orchestras more than they need us.

Because a town without a symphony orchestra is usually a turd. If you look at the places that don’t have orchestras at all, that haven’t done what it takes to support it, which is a lot, it’s hard. But once it works and it has a symphony orchestra it has more symbolic clout than another city does and that can be shown economically as well.

Usually the discussion is a very superficial one about why art is important for our souls?

It’s best to make the economic argument. The most bat shit senator does not dispute that we are artistic human beings. The feeling is “that’s something people need to pay for on their own time.” So your kids deserve music lessons but not the kids in that neighborhood? It’d be another thing if you were looking at military-proportion spending, but actually it generates and stimulates the economy instead.

I think the other problem with symphony orchestras is they tend to come across as very elite and some of that is their fault. Not dumbed down, don’t play the theme from Star Wars or Pokemon or some shit every weekend, but you also need an atmosphere that’s more human.

The more mainstream the movie, the more orchestrated it probably is. It’s commoners music. Don’t dress it up.

They’re playing to their donors but they’re f’ing themselves in the ass.

Do you see yourself bringing together rock and classical fans?

I think they’re music fans, but I really push the rock people to go to the symphony. I mean our music doesn’t suck, but it’s not fucking Shostakovich. I also like to tell them it’s likely to get them laid because going to the symphony orchestra is a great place to take a date.

That’s a badass date.

And symphony orchestras don’t market themselves that way because they’re too busy marketing to who gave them money yesterday, but if they’re going to live in the future they’re going to have to release the sphincter just a little bit. n
