FROM THE EDITOR

Protests matter? KERITH GABRIEL

W

hat does a protest do, really? What change does it evoke? How will you know if the change you marched to make is going through the proper channels and processes to truly show remarkable difference? It’s a fair question and one posed by a prominent Philadelphian who chose to remain anonymous, and who I’ll just refer to as “PP. But an hour-long conversation forced me to take a step back and truly look at what’s changed the last time I took to the street in revolt of established order. More and more we’re beginning to live in a society where the idea of exercising our First Amendment has become the norm, but is it for the right reasons? Are protests becoming less of a true rallying cry and more of a sexy thing to post on social media? Is it more of a joining of equal minds to truly spark change or great content for multiple segments on the evening news? Since Donald Trump was elected as the 45th president in 2016, there have been 10 major protests in America, including Saturday’s nationwide March For Our Lives rally. Thousands of people took to the streets to decry the rampant amount of school shootings and mass shootings – 1,600 since the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in 2012 – in America. It’s another noble and worthy cause, another needed outpouring of support from Americans fed up with kids dying at the hands of gun violence. “But what’s it going to change, honestly tell me? said PP. “On Monday, do you think Trump, [secretary of education Betsy] DeVos any of them are going to interrupt regularly scheduled television programming, stand at a podium, and announce that in light of recent protests across the country they’ve reached a decision to ban guns? Hell, no. Change starts

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

from within. It’s bugging the shit out of everyone, from your city councilman to your district congressional representative until a cease and desist letter in the mail. They’re the ones that evoke change, not lacing up your Nikes and marching down Broad Street.â€? I asked PP what he thought the beneďŹ t of protests are. Again, he spared no punches. “The only beneďŹ t? Police ofďŹ cers will receive overtime while entitled liberals clog up city streets and listen to other entitled liberals preach about change that isn’t coming. People want to think that they’re voice is being heard and it is – for the local news station, for outlets like yours and for their own mental, so they can say ‘yeah, I was there’ or ‘yeah, I did that.’â€? PP’s mentality is one that isn’t unique, in fact in 2015 it spawned a book entitled, Inventing the Future: Postcapitalism and a World Without Work in which they viewed protests as a form of “folk politics,â€? suggesting that we align to march almost out of habit, but not really truly doing much after to ensure a solution. And while that can be said of some protests, it can’t be said for all. It was hand-in-hand protests during the Civil Rights movement that sparked change. It was rallying cries across the country that found legislation for safer work environments and increased pay for those working in hazardous conditions. African-Americans don’t have to use separate bathrooms, learn at different schools, or sit in the back of a bus. Women can vote. It’s why I laced up my shoes and took to Broad Street, because I truly believe that change can come if enough people demand it. However, I do believe that there’s some truth to PP’s claim in the “cool factorâ€? of marching. Listen, the protest doesn’t end after you drop your sign. Email your elected ofďŹ cials, they count on your support to stay elected and it’s their job to listen. Venting via email is many times just as effective as spending a Saturday in the name of a noble cause. Who knows, it just might spur change and prove people like PP wrong. Q TWITTER: @SPRTSWTR

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

W

e head into a new week with the dust settling on one of the most important demonstrations of a generation. Last weekend, Philadelphia was one of scores of cities from across the world that took part in March for Our Lives, and spoke out against senseless gun violence. The idea? That lawmakers, lobbyists and all those associated with gun control in America will listen to a cry from its citizens to do something. Here in Philly, students, political ďŹ gures and activists alike took to the streets and the stage vowing to do whatever possible to have their voices heard in Washington. It was a emotional day, one we hope truly marks the ďŹ rst step in securing our schools, workplaces and streets in the long run. Take a hard look at an outdated Amendment and amend it. It’s all that we ask. Nice work yet again, Philly. – KERITH GABRIEL | @SPRTSWTR

Earth Day APRIL 18th ISSUE

#Robs10kFriends We’ve teamed up with popular Philly Instagrammer Rob Lawless, who’s on a mission to meet and introduce the rest of us to some of the most interesting people that cross our paths on a daily. This week we meet furniture enthusiast and maker, Wendell Holland. “I’m a fan of the process more so than the final product. Toward the end of 2015, Wendell Holland left his job as a law clerk to follow his passion of making furniture. Though he remembers being creative as a child, he didn’t realize his true passion was in furniture until he went to purchase a bed in late 2014. Noticing the expensive prices of quality beds, Wendell thought, “Why don’t I just try to make my own bed? He went out, bought his own wood, created a bed, and started receiving compliments from all of his friends. Eventually he thought, “Why don’t I see if I can sell this thing? so he listed his bed on Craigslist and within a couple of weeks sold it for $500. The more furniture Wendell made, the more he fell in love with the process, inspiring him to start Beve Unlimited. He decided to make it a full-time venture after the judge he worked for retired in late 2015. Since then, he’s made everything from beds to dressers to tables, has shipped his furniture to places across the world, and has even begun working on opening his own storefront in Manayunk! Wendell hopes a grand opening will be sometime between late February and June, but he’s in no rush – he’s enjoying the process! Awesome chatting with you, Wendell! How we met: Wendell heard about my project through his friend, Chris, who came across my post with Nehemiah Davis (No. 1514). He then DM’ed me to meet! Follow Rob on his mission to meet 10,000 new personalities via Instagram: instagram. com/Robs10kFriends. 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

Along for the ride

Philly’s Doug DeMuro has made a name being a jack of all trades when it comes to anything with four wheels and an engine BY TOM BECK

M

ost car enthusiasts only care about the fastest cars. That is, the ones with the sleekest designs, biggest engines and quickest 0-60 times. Now of course, YouTube celebrity and Philadelphia resident Doug DeMuro cares about these things too. After all, he’s driven a Ferrari F40 (the most iconic Ferrari of all time), the new 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon (the world’s fastest production car), and a Lamborghini Aventador SV (its top speed of 217 MPH makes it the fastest Lambo of all time) – plus a wide array of other stupidfast supercars well out of reach of the common man. But for DeMuro, 29, that’s not enough. The car enthusiast, who’s the star of his own remarkably popular eponymous YouTube channel, is the jack of all trades and master of them all when it comes to anything with four wheels and an engine. He’s not just interested in the fastest cars. He’s also

0$5&+ $35,/

interested in the big ones, the weird ones, the god awful ones – even the ones made by communists (Google “Doug DeMuro Trabantâ€?), and virtually any other idiosyncrasy you can think of. Typically, when he’s not driving his Mercedes-Benz E63 or either of his two Land Rovers, you can ďŹ nd him behind the wheel of something unique. Except for today. That’s because today, Doug DeMuro is behind the wheel of a bright blue 2007 Ford Ranger – the kind of average, mundane pickup you see littering the streets of Philadelphia every day. If you peer inside the glove box of the Ranger and rummage past the owner’s manual and a forgotten pair of dusty Ray-Bans, you’ll ďŹ nd the truck’s Pennsylvania registration card, which is licensed to a Thomas F. Beck. That’s me. Doug DeMuro is driving my 2007 Ford Ranger. I ask him what he thinks of it. “This is a true luxury car,â€? he says with a straight face. “You can park it in the shopping mall wherever, and you know there's

some dings on the outside and you don't really care if somebody hits their door against it because it's a truck. It's whatever. That is the dream. I hadn’t thought of that. But DeMuro thinks about cars in levels of consciousness the average person can’t understand. He’ll offer automotive frames of reference you hadn’t previously considered, which often leads to a-ha moments. It’s similar to how I imagine talking to Yoda or Gandalf must be. Or Morgan Freeman. But here’s the thing about reviewing unusual cars: If you want the reviews to be interesting enough even to people who aren’t gearheads – like DeMuro’s are – it’s necessary for the person reviewing them to be equally as unusual. DeMuro checks that box. In fact, it’s largely why he’s got all the makings of an A-List YouTube celebrity: he’s outgoing and friendly, knows how to talk in soundbites, and will perpetually bestow upon you a wide-eyed SpongeBob SquarePants smile while doing so. The only

break in character he showed during our entire encounter was when he stopped midsentence to criticize the ugly green color of an Audi Q7 we drove past (I thought it looked nice). The 6’4â€? DeMuro, who looks even taller in person, is a giant ball – or perhaps string bean, given his lanky frame – of glee. You’d never question his devotion to doing what he does. Although you might question his fashion sense, which people do often in the YouTube comments. He’s particularly lampooned for wearing two T-shirts at once, which is necessary, he says, because he “sweats like a crazy person.â€? “The thing that you'll learn about me if you spend time with me is that I am obsessively practical and time focused,â€? DeMuro, who was 15 minutes late to our interview, explains. “I don't want to go and buy more shirts. I just don't. I don't want to look it up, I don't want to go on Amazon, I certainly don't want to go to Target. I don't want to do that stuff. So I just use the shirt I have and people make fun of me.â€? In DeMuro’s defense, when it comes making fun of things he’s usually the one on the offensive. In his videos, which he records using his iPhone X, he has dismissed the $230,000 Mercedes Benz G65 as being “shaped like a ďŹ ling cabinetâ€? and mocked the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet’s body roll, saying it had “the structural rigidity of an earthworm.â€? When he used Turo – an app that allows you to rent other people’s interesting cars - to rent what he believed to be an overpriced $85,000 Maserati Ghibli to ďŹ lm a review, he quipped that “Turo is really the best way to experience the Ghibli. That’s because in a few days, you get to give it back.â€? He gives every car he reviews something called a “DougScore,â€? which is always a number somewhere between 10 and 100. Here’s how it works: First, there are two categories to the DougScore, weekend and daily. The weekend score measures how well the car performs as a just-for-fun toy to use on the weekends. There are ďŹ ve subcategories within the weekend classiďŹ cation: styling, acceleration, handling, cool factor and importance. Each subcategory is given a score from 1-10, resulting in a maximum score of 50 for the weekend category. The daily category works the same way, except it measures how accessible and efďŹ cient the car is at performing typical daily tasks like hauling a new piece of furniture or taking your kids to soccer practice. The ďŹ ve subcategories on the daily side are features, comfort, quality, practicality and value. Add the weekend score to the daily score and you have max score of 100. Currently, the lowest-rated car DeMuro has reviewed, scoring a 28, is a 1969 BMW Isetta, which is a 13 horsepower singleperson microcar with a single-cylinder engine. The highest is a tie between the 2018

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

PEOPLE Mercedes-Benz E63S Wagon and the 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder, which both scored a 73. The E63S Wagon is “the coolest station wagon in history,â€? he said in his review. The Porsche? “One of the most exciting, thrilling and widely covered cars over the last 25 years.â€? Speaking of Porsche, that was DeMuro’s ďŹ rst real job. DeMuro, a Denver native, got hired at Porsche, whose American headquarters is in Atlanta, right after earning his bachelor’s degree in economics from Emory University, also located in the Big A. His title was “Vehicle Allocation Manager.â€? The experience, he says, was not quite as sexy as it sounds. “It was a traditional, very boring setting working in a cube next to some other guy who was analyzing whatever,â€? he tells me from the driver’s seat as we continue cruising around Philly in my Ranger. “Really, I was just in an ofďŹ ce job doing Microsoft Excel every day.â€? While working at Porsche, he also earned side cash writing about cars for a website called The Truth About Cars, which he became very good at. DeMuro, who learned his writing skills from his parents (his father is a lawyer and his mother is an alumnus of University of Missouri’s journalism school), decided he wanted to do that instead of Microsoft Excel, so he took a massive pay cut and quit Porsche in 2013 at the naive young age of 24. “I was walking away from half my income at the time,â€? he said. “It was a huge risk and we didn't know if it would work out.â€? Seeing the impact the journalism industry has taken in recent years, DeMuro ďŹ gured it would be wise to start making videos about cars in addition to writing about them. There was only one problem: he didn’t have access to any cool, interesting cars to ďŹ lm with. So, with the help of a co-signed loan from his parents and a now-defunct Georgia law that waived sales taxes on used cars, he bought a used 2004 Ferrari 360 soon after quitting Porsche. He paid $88,500 for it. “It's not something you can do unless you have, like, an enormous amount almost of arrogant conďŹ dence, right?â€? he said, laughing at himself. “My parents thought I was nuts.â€? But it worked. DeMuro bought and sold cars frequently (“I think like 27?â€? he posited when asked how many cars he’s owned), ďŹ lmed videos with them, and eventually worked his way up to having one of the most successful YouTube car-related channels on the internet – averaging about 1 million views per video – all while still writing as well. He was a staff writer for Jalopnik for three years until 2016 when he was hired to be the editor of AutoTrader’s new-at-the-time blog called Oversteer. He spends about half of his workweek writing and the other half making videos, each of

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

which takes about ďŹ ve hours to complete total. He gets recognized in public every day. Even when he goes to Europe. “My wife and I went to Amsterdam for a week-long summer vacation and when the plane landed and we went up to customs, I gave the guy my passport and he goes ‘Oh, Doug DeMuro. I watch your videos,’â€? he humblebrags to me, relishing in his minor celebrity status. “We freaked out.â€? DeMuro eventually relocated to Philly in 2014, a city he’s come to love. There’s only two problems. The ďŹ rst is that during winter, the weather simply isn’t great for shooting videos. As a result, he pays out of his own pocket to y to different parts of the country to review cars. He’s amassed such a following that his viewers will typically reach out to him and offer up their cool cars for him to review. “I try to avoid press cars as much as I can,â€? he said, noting that while he does take them sometimes, it’s rare. “I'd rather borrow a car from a dude, and if I think the car is crap - and I do occasionally - then I'll say it’s crap...There's these journalists who take all these press cars and then if you say something mean, automakers start rescinding your access. Then how do you keep working? So you basically have to say positive things. I'm not that cynical, I think a lot of the guys in my industry are honest, and I also think that most of these cars are actually pretty good. There are not many bad cars anymore, but nonetheless I would just rather have the ability to say what I want.â€? The other problem is that Philly, like any big city, makes for stop-and-go city driving that doesn’t necessarily attract car people. “The thing that most people don't know about me is that I actually like places more than I like cars,â€? he says. “We'll ďŹ gure out the car stuff. And we did.â€? DeMuro has to keep two of his three cars in a nearby parking garage since his house only has a single-car garage, but he bites the bullet and rolls with it. For DeMuro, the perks of living in a city – like readily accessible toothpaste – outweigh the cons. “I enjoy being able to walk all sorts of places,â€? he says. “Growing up in Denver, which is so spread out, we didn't have that. And so it's kind of nice to just walk down to CVS. You realize at night, you're getting ready for bed and you need toothpaste. You walk out the door and boom you're back in 10 minutes with toothpaste. And that's kind of cool.â€? At the end of our interview I ask DeMuro to give my Ranger a DougScore. He said he’d think about it and and get back to me. A few days later, he sends me an email with the ďŹ nal result: a lowly 36. So much for being “a true luxury car,â€? I think. At the current time of writing, a score of 36 would place my Ranger in 83rd place out of the 90 total cars DeMuro has ďŹ lmed. But hey, at least it beat out the Isetta? Q

CULTURE “Right from the get-go, Preston and I and Casey [Foster], Kathy [Romano], Nick [McIlwain], Marisa [Magnatta] and the whole collective we looked around at other people in the industry and saw who was doing it right and who had the long career, said Morrison, 58. Preston would always say that he envied certain broadcasters, one of which being [WMMR’s 93.3-FM] Pierre Robert, who’s had a long career in this city. A good to moderate degree of success was our goal, so being where we are today has really blown us away.

They may sit on opposite sides of the studio, but the bond between Preston Elliott and Steve Morrison (left), couldn’t be tighter.

Ready to rock on Preston and Steve celebrate 20 years of keeping shit weird on Philadelphia radio BY KERITH GABRIEL

A

s the track played out for a listening radio and streaming audience, Preston Elliott and Steve Morrison sat behind their respective microphones discussing its indelible mark on an entire generation. In 1996, uber-popular rock-folk group the Dave Matthews Band released “Crash into Me, the third single off their second album, Crash. It was a song that if you were a teen who grew up on mainstream rock and alternative music from that era, you remember some if not most of the lyrics and just how much a band like DMB ruled radio airwaves.

Preston and Steve credit their longevity to a good crew, one that fills their studio each morning to deliver Philly’s top morning drive time radio. “Steve can you believe this song is over 20 years old, man? Elliott asked, staring into his laptop. “These guys made one hell of a song, it’s still so good. I can’t believe it’s that old. Fitting considering the duo, hosts of WMMR’s (93.3-FM) “Preston and Steve Morning Show, share a similar story right here in Philadelphia, as their brash, sometimes off-putting but always captivating brand of radio has played out just in time for a morning rush hour commute for the past 20 years. And while it’s a story that began at another radio station entirely, Preston and Steve have found a home on arguably the only true rock station to survive what has been a revolving door of Philly radio.

“Every now and then when I do a quick assessment of who we are and where we are as a radio show, I try to think back at myself when we ďŹ rst started and what my expectations would have been in that stage of my career,â€? said Elliott, 50, during a recent sit down with PW inside their studio. “In that context, I’m really surprised and excited at how well we’ve been received in the marketplace. We’ve gone further than I’ve ever thought we would and I’m really happy about it.â€? The success and longevity of the show arrives to a direct correlation to its bootstraps upbringing. From its early days on the now defunct Y100 (100.3-FM), the show found its home on WMMR and from that point, both Elliott and Morrison’s goal was to ensure it was built to last. They both witnessed star power radio talent op and ďŹ zzle out here in Philadelphia and knew that if the content didn’t come correct, they’d be next.

As the show continues to grow in popularity, the guests have managed to stay even keel. Sure, the pair and their crew have welcomed their fair share of A-Listers into the studio, but it’s the B-, C- and sometimes Dlisters who make for the best guys. Why? Because they care more. “We could go with some big names like having Richard Gere in the studio, John Travolta, Arnold Schwarzenegger and they’ve all been great, but our favorite guests are the smaller, lesser known names that you really have fun with,â€? said Elliott. “I remember years ago, we had [1970s singer, performer] Tony Orlando in the studio; freaking Tony Orlando, man. And you know what? He was awesome! He comes in being all like ‘yeah, you don’t remember me and we’re reeling off Tony Orlando and the Dawn songs and he’s losing his mind!â€? Laughing at the memory, Morrison added: “I’ll tell you our kind of guest ‌ we love the secondary characters, the peripheral characters that come in and are eager to talk to us. The big stars are great, but they don’t need exposure. It’s those secondary stars that we really enjoy.â€? From stars to ordinary citizens, Preston and Steve

CULTURE have always preferred to give love to the little people. During live shows they’ll routinely go out and talk to fans. In fact, Elliott scoffed at the idea of radio hosts who hide behind barriers between them and listeners saying, “how is that authentic? But their biggest claim to fame is the philanthropic efforts of their annual Camp out for Hunger Drive, which, since its inaugural drive, has deliver close to 5,000 tons of food to area food banks and raised more than $1.2 million in charitable funds. “Philadelphia is a big market, but it’s really a small city, said Morrison. “It’s important to establish yourself as part of the community and to be relatable to the people you’re around every day. People choose to listen to us, you know, there’s no gun to their head. For that, we’re thankful and in everything we do we really try to show our appreciation.

During waking hours, Elliott scans the numerous websites he’s compiled to curate the show’s “Bizarro File,â€? segment which highlights just how weird of a world we all inhabit. It’s part his routine, one-part of a spinoff of having Morrison and the rest of the crew react as only they can. However, while the stories are pre-planned the responses, like most of the show, isn’t. “Everything you’re getting is fresh. We don’t script shit,â€? said Elliott. “I mean some of the topics are pre-planned, but as far as the conversation, it’s all off the top. Many times, we’ll begin to have a topic off-air and then realize that it would be perfect for on-air and ow what we were talking about right into the show. It makes for a lot of fun. There’s a certain amount of planning, yes, but many times, man we’re just doing our thing and it’s why we work.â€?

‘We don’t script shit’

BFFs. Sort of.

Immediately following the show, Elliott says work for the next days show begins. For them, it almost has to be this way as for the last 20 years – it’s been a 4 a.m. wake up call. “From waking up to shower, it sucks. After that, it’s not so bad, he joked. “Well, Preston’s phrase is that ‘you get used to not being used to it,’ but the truth is I came from a life of stand-up comedy where I was going to bed at the time I get up now, Morrison added. “ Look, there’s pros and cons to everything, and now, since doing the show, even on the weekends, I get up early to get that part of the day to get a lot done. Waking up at 6 or 7 [a.m.] now you feel like you’ve missed half the day.

There was a time Morrison will say that both he and Elliott clocked more hours together than they did with their own families. But that doesn’t make them best friends. In fact, ask them what they are and it’s a vague response that meshes friends, colleagues, family and brothers into one slowly-ladeled cauldron. Inside the WMMR studio, it’s not just them. It’s the aforementioned 5-6 person crew that makes the show run expertly, but for these two to function, it’s about being upfront, honest and fair – down to the dollar amount. “Steve and I decided from the very beginning – we have the same agent – that we would have identical contracts, down to the letter,â€? Elliott said. “So that we can speak freely about things that are touchy, like money, longevity, whatever it may be. So when we talk business, there’s no closed door, everyone knows what the deal is and I think that transparency has made for a much better work environment. We’ve seen [radio] relationships implode because someone is jealous of someone else, they hear someone’s making more money or they’ve got this deal or this deal and we just didn’t want that.â€? Growing in radio the duo took lumps together and the one thing they know is that it was far more important to stick together on the contractual stuff than see them and possibly their show take a hit as a result of what they both view as the small stuff. “We’ve had those career decision moves, man,â€? said Morrison. We’ve had the sweating it out moments, having boxes with our stuff inside as we cleared out ofďŹ ces when contracts didn’t look like they were gonna get renewed. It’s just not worth it to us to keep shit from each other. I have my circle of close friends and so does he, but to us it’s different. It’s unique and to be honest, it's probably why we work.â€? Q

Lawrence Watling and Brianna DeMayo, the one-two punch of music marketing agency Taste Creators inside their Fishtown offices.

In Good Taste Meet the duo ready to help you recognize the real dream of the rap game BY KERITH GABRIEL

W

hen Brianna DeMayo looks at the wall, a smile comes across her face.

Ear to ear. The oor-to-ceiling chalkboard wall in her new Fishtown full-service marketing agency is littered with the names of Philadelphia-based rappers, singers and inuencers in the hip-hop game. It’s a literal homage to the work the 31-year-old has put in to build her own brand in addition to the trademark of scores of artists in the Greater Philadelphia Region. Taste Creators is a reection of DeMayo herself, a lover and purist of music, speciďŹ cally hip-hop. Her agency started as a blog highlighting some of Philly’s best and brightest in the game. It was only after the success of that blog – rated as one of the Top 100 best hip-hop blogs in in the country by Feedspot.com – and at the urging of some notable inuencers did DeMayo realize she had something bigger on her hands here. “My blog was getting a lot of attention on Twitter from artists and people on the business side who suggested I write full articles about this,â€? said DeMayo. “I woke up one morning and saw that Wendy Day had retweeted one of my articles. She’s someone I really look up to in this business and I was like ‘wow.’ That turned into me just wanting to meet with a million different artists and seeing how I could help them.â€?

0$5&+ $35,/

It’s that mindset that found Taste Creators transcend from a blog into a lucrative business, one that has grown from a computer into a 1,000 square-foot warehouse complete with desks, a conference room and photo-video studio. It’s as much a think tank venue for artists as it is a legitimate agency designed to put artists in the best light. Professional photos for your social handle or interview coaching? Yep. Post up on the couch with a blunt and and take pen to paper crafting potential tracks for your next album? All good. Anything that sparks creativity. “People started calling me a publicist, but I didn’t even know I was doing PR work, joked DeMayo. “I just knew that if someone was good at what they did and needed the tools to get to the next step and I had the means, I’d help them. It really happened gradually over the last 5-6 years. It’s why I’m passionate about this, because I see the grind and if you come in here with that same mindset, we’ll do everything that we can to help an artist succeed. The “we in DeMayo’s comment is that, as a result of rapid expansion, she created a partnership in January with former Atlantic Records staffer Lawrence Watling. Known in rap circles primarily

as “Watts,â€? Watling, 24, became the company’s chief operating ofďŹ cer, coming with skills learned during his time at the mega label’s NYC ofďŹ ces where he worked with a number of artists, most notably rapper Wiz Khalifa. While he arrives with more of a business mentality as it pertains to the evolution of an artist, Watling noted he wholeheartedly shares DeMayo’s vision in putting artists in the best light. “We wanted to make sure that everything looks so good that when your music hits a point that you’re so ready to get big, we want to make sure that everything else falls into place,â€? said Watling. “When I met Breezy, from a business level, we both just got it, but there’s also doing what we’re doing in Philly, which is helping artists directly or where artists come with an issue and we solve the issue and help them grow and make money.â€? The list of artists is huge but mostly authentically Philly. From Marv Mack to China Mac to Joie Kathos, Taste Creators has had a hand on all of them. The team recently

wrapped on a job for shoe giant Puma in which they assisted in a collaboration with fellow clothier FUBU creating video and other content all featuring indie artists from Taste Creators’ client cache. And it had its own stage late last year at the A3C Music Festival in Atlanta. “My whole thing is turning artists into entrepreneurs, said DeMayo. “A lot of artists feel they need to be famous and have 20,000 fans to make money; and that’s just not true. You can have 20 fans, if those 20 fans will purchase a hoodie off of you. You just made a couple hundred bucks that you can put back into your music. If you have passion and grind, our door is always open, but walk in convinced that all you need is a video or social media followers and don’t want to take the time to understand how it all works, then we’re not for you. But that’s OK, considering the Taste Creators have no shortage of artists putting in the work it takes to get put on. Q TWITTER: @SPRTSWTR

’m in D/s relationship. I’m not submissive around the clock, but my partner owns my cock. We’ve purchased several male chastity devices, but I can pretty easily get my cock out of them. My partner did some investigating and learned that the only effective devices work with a Prince Albert piercing—a ring through the head of the penis that locks into the device, preventing the sub from pulling his cock out. My partner now wants me to get a PA. I don’t want to get my cock pierced and I’ve said so, but I haven’t safe-worded on it. I would very reluctantly do it to please her. My partner made an appointment for a piercing three months from now, on our second anniversary. She told me that we can cancel it if I can ďŹ nd an effective chastity device that doesn’t require a piercing. Do you or any of your contacts in the fetish world know of any devices that are inescapable? – Piercing Appendage Unnecessarily Scares Eager Sub “I’ve never come across a standard male chastity device I couldn’t pull out of,â€? said Rufed Sheets, “so PAUSES’s partner has obviously researched regular chastity devices well.â€? Sheets is an IT consultant who lives in the United Kingdom with his partner of 15 years. Male chastity devices have fascinated him for more than two decades and, as of this writing, he owns 37 different kinds of cock cages. His partner frequently keeps his cock locked up for weeks or months at a time—and if there were such a thing as a commercially available male chastity device that was inescapable, Sheets would know about it. “However, all is not lost,â€? said Sheets. “Piercing is one of two ways to ensure the penis cannot escape. The other is a full chastity belt. Now, full belts aren’t without their drawbacks—they are generally more expensive, are harder to conceal under clothes, and take longer to get used to, especially at night. But they are secure. I have three custom-ďŹ tted chastity belts and, once properly ďŹ tted, they’re inescapable.â€? Sheets’ chastity belts were made for him by Behind Barz (behindbarz.co.uk) and Fancy Steel (fancysteel.com.au).

But if most commercially available male chastity devices aren’t inescapable, what’s the point? Why would a person bother to wear one? “You can only partially escape,â€? said Sheets. “It’s possible to pull out the penis but not remove the device,â€? which is anchored around the balls and base of the shaft. “And a partially removed device is awkward and uncomfortable.â€? For many male subs and their Doms, the symbolism of a male chastity device is what matters most, not its inescapability. And as with other forms of sex play and most aspects of healthy relationships, the honor system makes it work. “As in any negotiated relationship, you can cheat,â€? said Sheets. “But why cheat? They’re easy to keep on if you’re genuinely interested in submitting.â€? Fun fact: Locking a guy’s cock in an inescapable device doesn’t prevent him from coming. “A device can be locked in place with a belt or a piercing, but orgasms are still possible,â€? said Sheets. “I’ve yet to discover any kind of device that can prevent the wearer from achieving orgasm if he’s holding a powerful wand massager against it, especially after weeks without coming.â€? So if your Dominant is locking up your cock to prevent you from coming, PAUSES, she’ll also need to lock up her vibrators. There are two other things Sheets wanted you to be aware of as you begin to explore male chastity, PAUSES. “Lots of men are shy about being submissive,â€? said Sheets, “so they’ll say things like ‘I’m normally dominant in real life,’ kind of like PAUSES opened his letter by saying he isn’t submissive ‘around the clock.’ I just wanted to make sure he understood that chastity is a longterm game. For most of us in chastity devices, it’s a 24/7 affair—literally around the clock.â€? If you said you weren’t submissive around the clock because you didn’t want to admit that you are, in fact, submissive around the clock, PAUSES, chastity play won’t be a problem. But if you meant it—if you’re not capable of remaining in a submissive headspace for more than a few hours—you’ll need to ask your partner, before the padlock clicks shut, just how long she intends to keep your cock locked up. “Being locked also has another side effect that you wouldn’t perhaps anticipate,â€? Sheets added. “Whenever you become turned on, you feel your cage or belt against your penis. It can be anything from a gentle reminder to a vicelike grip, depending on your arousal level. And whenever this happens, your mind automatically turns to your key holder, even if they’re not around.â€? Q Rufed Sheets blogs at rufedsheets.com, where he reviews male chastity devices and other sex toys. Follow him on Twitter @rufedsheets.

What They Are Saying: “Kathy and Pat Conway far exceeded my expectations on selling the house I rehabbed. Besides from being professional, courteous, friendly and extremely knowledgeable, they are the nicest people. I consider them part of my family and feel as though we’ve known them forever. Pat doesn’t stop at anything. He goes over and above his role as a realtor, he involves himself in everything even things that he isn’t responsible for, he does it to get the job done and he does it so well. I have never experienced Neal Rubin h. working with any realtor that does it all. I will deďŹ nitely continue to use The Conway Team.
