ART
International Pop
P
op art isn’t just Campbell Soup cans or oversized comics. The Philadelphia Museum of Art’s latest exhibit—International POP—is a colorful and thought-provoking showcase of the bold imagery that chronicles Pop art’s emergence as an international movement. Pop Art emerged as an art form after World War II, initially in Britain and the United States in the mid to late 1950s. After not too long, it became an international sensation, defining a period of social, political and cultural changes. The artform takes everyday things, like soda bottles and magazine clippings, and turns them into art masterpieces. Pieces are often full of bright colors and political and/or social messages. The exhibit features 150 paintings, sculptures, prints, collages and films by more than 80 artists from more than a dozen countries around the world. At the beginning of the exhibit, there is an eye-catching infographic that explains the different types of pieces that originated from each country. Focusing on work made from 1956 to 1972, the exhibit features the work of popular artists,

including Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter, Roy Lichtenstein, Marisol, and Ushio Shinohara, as well as some lesser-known Pop artists. “This is the first exhibition (in the world) to really showcase the phenomenon of international pop (art),” says Timothy Rub, the George D. Widener Director and CEO of the PMA. He hopes that the exhibition will resonate with the younger generation. To coincide with the exhibit, the PMA offers a variety of talks, panels and events. There will be several Pop Salons, a series of intimate conversations about all things Pop Art with some of the featured artists and exhibition curators. They will speak about the changing attitudes toward art, media, mass culture, and politics. As an added bonus, nationally renowned radio and podcast host, Ben Vaughn, has created a Spotify playlist of music from all over the world to be downloaded and listened to during the exhibition. —ABIGAIL DUREY

T
is the season… to get outdoors and visit your favorite food trucks as they finally come out of winter hibernation and start serving up delicious lunch favorites. The yummy cupcakes you see on our cover can be found at the Sweetbox Truck owned by Gretchen Fantini or at her equally sweet brick and mortar shop at 13th and Pine Streets. We chatted up the baking beauty to find out all about her delicious treats and where to find her this season.
Are there any new flavors/products you are working on for the spring? I am always evolving and trying out new flavor combinations, pushing the limits on flavors and textures. The flavor list is endless. I really like collaborating with local companies and especially Yard’s Brewery in particular. I recently nabbed a few jars of Soom tahini and will be working on something with that. Mother’s Day we are working on a new gift box and designs. You’ll have to wait and see.
How many cupcakes do you typically bake each day? It varies depending on the season and holidays. Roughly 500 to 1,000. We bake constantly throughout the day to always keep it fresh.
What are the most popular flavors? Strawberries & champagne, Yards Brawler toffee crunch, birthday cake, chocolate peanut butter, peach cobbler, raspberry spodee red velvet, brown sugar cookie dough... just to name a few. 12 | Philly Weekly | March 3 - 9, 2016 | phillyweekly.com
What do you sell besides cupcakes? Cakes. All of your favorite cupcake flavors can be turned into a cake. We sell lots of cookie dough brownies cake jars, lemon bars, funfetti sugar cookies, banana pudding, ricotta cookies, pound cake. The baked goods’ menu changes daily.
Where did you get your recipes from? Some I “stole” from my mom and added my own modern twist. I love cake so after years of reading and baking at home, I just get how cake works. It’s kind of you either get it or you don’t. I can’t cook, but I can bake my ass off.
Where can we find the Sweetbox truck this season? The Food Trust Night Markets, the Oval, Swarthmore Truckathon, Manayunk StrEAT Festival and more. I post on all social media where you can find her. You can also book the truck for your private party, wedding, graduation or corporate luncheon.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of having an actual store? Any plans to expand/offer different products? The advantage is I can bake more now that I have my own space which I love. Business has been really great so it is getting trickier to split my time up into running the truck and the store. I need to clone myself. They both need my full attention. I recently launched our (cup) cake jars which are great for an on the go sweet craving and for client gifts, weddings and showers. n

Spring Guide THEATER
Hot & Bothered T
hings get sexy at Theatre Exile this month with the Philadelphia premiere of the erotic thriller, Smoke by Kim Davies. After meeting by chance at a BDSM party (not exactly RomCo here), John and Julie match wits, kinks and commingle personal boundaries in a play that tests not only the actor’s limits, but those of the audience perhaps as well. We visited the set in between shows to talk with Smoke Director and Exile Producing Artistic Director, Deborah Block.
Tell us about Smoke and what makes it an “erotic thriller,” that’s what caught all of our attention.
Two Trains Running
By Jacqueline Rupp
You’re dealing in a world where we say there are a lot of rules, but people are there to push the boundaries of their own physical exploration. ‘I want you to tie me up.’ ‘I want you to put needles in my back.’ ‘I want to feel pain.’ So people are pushing themselves physically, but for some people it’s about the power play. ‘I want to be dominant.’ ‘I want to be submissive.’ And once you start playing in power and it’s physically manifested, then it becomes both, emotional and physical, and people are being pushed to their boundaries. And when you’re being pushed to the edge, are you always sure you can hold on? Are you sure that you won’t fall over? And that’s where the thriller comes in. Will these people be pushed beyond what they can control. Will someone ask for something beyond what they can manage.
It is erotic, because it’s dealing with sexual politics and two people who really are just meeting, navigating their attraction to each other and navigating something that they want from each other. It’s sexual in nature but it’s also about power and desire and that’s where the eroticism comes from. It is set inside a BDSM party, takes place in the kitchen and the party’s happening right outside. That party infiltrates, the fact that they are at this kink party, it sort of sets the rules. It allows for, it’s not as though people haven’t ever hooked up when they first meet, but when you come to this party, that is saying “that is more okay.” There’s no judgement on that. And so certain filters we may have, those rules have gone away, and then the rules of the BDSM world have come into play: “I won’t do anything unless you say ‘yes.’ “Tell me what you want.” There’s actually a lot of rules in the BDSM community.
People get attracted to people, of course there’s physical attraction, but there can be something about them energetically that compliments who you are energetically and you kind of gel and you feel that right away. In this case, you find out very early in the play that he’s a wannabe artist, but he’s working for a famous photographer and she’s the daughter of this photographer, so then you’re dealing in status issues, but there’s also that they both understand this man, his boss/her father, so that gives them something to talk about: this really powerful, not very nice human, that they both understand. That brings them together.
That’s an interesting contrast.
Did it fall on you to create a safe environment for them?
Yeah in fact it’s very much about ‘I need you to say exactly what you want.’ ‘I need you to tell me it’s okay to do this, but not that’ And so that world has a lot of rules but truth-be-told, when we’re navigating a first date, second date, we don’t always talk about consent in the same way, so as we navigate sexual politics and consent, it’s actually murkier in our regular lives than it is in the rules of the BDSM world.
That is the director’s job, to create the environment where the actors can go on this journey. You guide them on the journey, you sometimes lead them on the journey, but that is absolutely the director’s job to create the environment so they can do their best work.
And it’s funny because my initial thought when hearing the “kink party” setting, was more wild, less restrictions than in our typical life, but placed in that context…
Oh yeah! (laughs)
There’s more restrictions in terms of, communication is key, and that’s the rules.
And that can be scary, right? Having to articulate your desires to someone else? That’s especially one of the issues for the character Julie because she’s being asked to say directly what she wants and she’s 20 years old and she’s used to people kind of just ‘doing things’ and just her smiling and being coy, and she’s being asked to say exactly what she wants and it’s difficult. Are you kidding? It’s difficult for me to say exactly what I want, for us to say what we want in life. It’s often difficult for people and I think it tends to be more difficult for women than for men, but that’s sort of a little sexist view, but I do feel like that is the case.
And is this where the thriller part of the play comes in at? Is it a psychological cat-and-mouse? Well imagine those movies that are both physical and emotional, it’s the emotional that gets to us in many ways, but it is both.

These two characters appear to have an immediate attraction. Can you relate to the idea of a dynamic being forged from first meeting?
Was that particularly challenging for you here, because of the nature of this work? Awkward moments? Oh yeah! There were a lot of them. I was always like, ‘OK, now we’re gonna laugh.’ Because if you look around our set, there’s a butt plug on our set, there’s dildos on our set, and more because we wanted there to be the idea that the people in this room are very open about their sexuality, there’s no apologies, there’s no shame and that’s something important. I have to pretend there’s no shame, even if it’s a little awkward.
Do you want that to be a take-away for the audience? Well, that this is a world with no shame, but even though that’s what this world is, it doesn’t mean that there’s none for us individually. And the truth today for young people is there’s not the same rules that were true when I was growing up, and not the same rules when my mom was growing up and the fewer rules, the more fortitude you have to have as a person to be able to navigate it. And that is what a lot of this play is about. n Through March 13. $10-$40. Theatre Exile at Studio X, 1340 S. 13th St. 215.218.4022. theatreexile.org

She disguises herself as a boy and discovers a whole new world until she’s love-struck by a man named Orlando. Rosalind is arguably Shakespeare’s greatest and most fulfilled female character. Directed by Charles McMahon, As You Like It also spawns one of Shakespeare’s most quoted speeches, “All the world’s a stage” and the saying “too much of a good thing.” This romantic comedy will have you realizing the power of love. The Invisible Hand
Absolute power corrupts absolutely. For Doctor Faustus this is scarily true. Faustus, although brilliant and a world renowned scholar, scoffs at the limits of natural sciences. Conceited with his own genius he turns to black magic and dances with the devil—literally. He sells his soul for 24 years of infinite knowledge and the devil’s servant, Mephistopheles, as his own personal assistant. Director Alexander Burns dives into the space and time of Faustus who tests his new limitless mind which “knows all, but lacks a soul.” Wed., March 30-Sun., April 24. $10-$50. How far would you go to survive? That and more is probed in this suspenseful and endorphin rushing story of Nick Bright, an American employee and successful investment banker who’s kidnapped by an Islamic militant group in Pakistan. With no one to negotiate his release, Bright must make questionably moral decisions. Playwright Ayad Akhtar pierces the undue silence about the embroiled Middle East and shows just how far man will go to live another day. Matt Pfeiffer, one of Philadelphia’s most in-demand directors, is poised to deliver a powerful show in this Philly premiere. Thurs., May 12-Sun., June 5. $10-$35. Almost 90 years later, this dark depiction, inspired by real life murderer Ruth Snyder, gives a haunting exploration of the female mind. The play is centered around a young woman following society’s expectations of her. She marries her execrable boss and has an affair with a younger man who rejuvenates her avidity for life. Eventually committing the unthinkable, director Brenna Geffers’ theme of a female as an antihero questions the typical “damsel in distress” stereotype frequently seen on stage. Geffers says she wants to move, “beyond the traditional expectation that women can only take passive,

Save those comics Q&A with Travis Stever of Coheed & Cambria

R
ock band Coheed & Cambria’s long-running sci-fi love story could make Star Wars pale in comparison. With a progressive rock sound heavily influenced by Led Zeppelin, it should come as no surprise that after 20 years, few acts have developed a catalog as rich and imaginative as that of C&C. In anticipation of their upcoming sold-out show at The Fillmore, lead guitarist Travis Stever took a few minutes to discuss the creative process behind the group’s first-ever non-concept album, The Color Before The Sun and upcoming tour.
Congratulations on a sell out show here in Philadelphia as part of your world tour. Twenty years in the business is a really big accomplishment. I’m super excited for it. I’m actually getting ready for it right now, trying to learn some of the new songs, and re-learn some of our bigger songs.
After 20 years, you guys must be in a much different place now than when you first hit the road as teenagers. It’s quite different. Having families at home makes it… I’m not going to say it makes it super tough, because we still enjoy touring, but it’s an all-new experience. I know I can speak for [lead singer] Claudio Sanchez and [bassist] Zach Cooper when I say it’s like a whole new learning curve and a whole new emotional attachment to home. We all have wives and we all have been married for a few years now. I’ll be married for 10 years coming this year. We’ve been well rehearsed in getting around that. Our wives could come visit us and do this, but now having the babies, it’s a little tougher. But it’s still the labor of love that it was before and, not to sound cheesy, still a major part of our souls. We like to play our music and like to play it live. I don’t think playing it at the bar down the street could cut it. In some ways it’s like the same internal battle that we’ve always had of wanting to be home but also wanting to be out there playing, and now it’s an even bigger battle because we’ve got these guys in our lives. Feeling the excitement and being excited about playing new material that we’ve never played before makes me feel real ambitious.
Speaking of new material, you guys took a major risk by departing from your streak of concept albums. How different was it recording The Color Before The Sun? It was a Claudio decision. Now more than anything, it was so personal to him that I feel this one in particular, the way things were happening in his life, he felt like the concept wasn’t something we needed on this record. [The music] kind of spoke for itself. Even the way we did the music, like tracking it live, was a completely different world. I should say, the concepts never
20 | Philly Weekly | March 3 - 9, 2016 | phillyweekly.com
dictated our music. There have been times where it’s like, “This is going to be part of our story, and there is going to be extra suspense here.” That’s happened a few times, but that’s never dictated how the songs were written or anything like that. Specifically from Claudio’s standpoint, he’s always had a personal thing with the music lyrically. Once that is done and the song is there, the concept would usually be built around that, in a puzzle sort of way. On this record, he sort of felt this was an intermission. The concept was not gone, but he just felt like there was enough going on in his life for him to pour that out into the lyrics without confusing that with the concept. Once he decided that, everyone else in the band followed suit.
One of the fun things about going through your band’s catalog is that you guys have a strong connection to the comic and sci-fi culture. With this being a non-concept album, will the fans have to put away their comic books? This record is, like I said, it’s almost like an intermission thing. The concepts are not gone. The people that still like that side of the band still have that side of the band. Really, in the grand scheme of things we’ve released so many records already. If you consider The Afterman to be two different records, then it’d be nine records that the band’s done. First off, I’m proud of that. Just saying that is like, “Wow, we’ve been doing this so long.” There’s a lot of records and will be more. This record doesn’t need to make people go, “We need to put these comic books away because we’re not making concept records,” because the next one very well could be. I’d say one step at a time, but we’re always working, so they’re always things happening. We could surprise people and just come out with something completely concept-related after this. No decisions have been made to leave behind concept records.
Are there any surprises that The Color Before The Sun Tour concertgoers should watch for? We’re going to have a really cool show in terms of visuals, but we have some songs we’ve never played that are older in our catalog, and there are going to be a few surprises. Philadelphia is a place that’s really important us. It’s very close to where we grew up. A lot of friends there, and it’s got a lot of history for the band. I remember one of the first tour tattoos that any of us got was in Philadelphia. We all got the dragonfly because that was our symbol for our first record, The Second Stage Turbine Blade. We probably played Philadelphia just as much as New York in the early days. Funny enough I remember that one of those shows that stands out after all of these years was a show we performed with Glassjaw, who we are touring with now and remember we had a great set. I hope we can repeat that history. [Laughs] n
Wed., March 23, 7:30pm. Tower Theater Key Songs: “Stomp,” “Melodies From Heaven” Why You Should Go: For almost 20 years now, few other performers have blended gospel’s soulful tradition with the bounce of contemporary hip-hop and R&B like Kirk Franklin has. Baauer Thurs., March 24, 8pm. With a habit of using unusual samples in his tracks (exhibit A: growling lions) Baauer is sure to have music lovers of every genre doing their own version of the ‘shake.
Pusha T with Lil’ Bibby and G Herbo Fri., March 25, 8pm. Trocadero Theatre Key Songs: “Numbers On The Boards,” “M.P.A.” Why You Should Go: Formerly one half of the critically acclaimed rap duo The Clipse, Pusha T has quietly built a reputation as one the sharpest and most deft lyricists in hip-hop. Square Peg Round Hole with Moon Bounce and Son Step Sat., March 26, 8:30pm. MilkBoy Key Songs: “Big Thicket,” “Bats!” Why You Should Go: “Because we are an instrumental group, our hope is that people connect with the songs and assign their own meanings to them,” says band member Evan Chapman. By combining live sounds like actual hand claps with studio effects like arpeggiated drum machine hi-hat, Square Peg Round Hole is a wonder of musical concept art to behold.
Rihanna with Travi$ Scott Sun., April 3, 7:30pm. Wells Fargo Center

David Wax Museum & Darlingside Sat, April 9, 7:30pm. Johnny Brenda’s Key Songs: “Born with a Broken Heart,” “Yes, Maria, Yes” Why You Should Go: The David Wax Museum’s blend of American folk music and rural Mexican music is such a bold musical idea that it works and works well. As a musical ensemble that memorably unites instruments like the fiddle with a quijada—a percussion instrument made from a donkey’s jawbone— in musical harmony, David Wax Museum is taking a huge step off the beaten path doing it well. With cosigns from the now-famous Austin, Texas South By Southwest (SXSW) Music Festival and National Public Radio, this show is on the cutting edge of cultural synergy.
Santana Sat., April 9, 8pm, Tower Theater, Upper Darby Key Songs: “Smooth,” Maria Maria” Why You Should Go: Latino guitarist Carlos Santana has one of the richest musical legacies in American music. Spring Guide FILM
On the Big Screen
T
a
he spring movie season is a tricky and versatile beast. It has the unfortunate task of coming before the most enjoyable period for film: summer. However, the movies that are gracing the silver screen this spring, may be the beginning of the rainy season standing toe-totoe with summer.
THE WITCH (In Theaters): A hit at the ‘15 Sundance Film Festival, although it may be marketed as a horror film ripe with scary conventional themes of Puritans and witchcraft, don’t expect the typical scare tricks to creep you out. This gothic horror is too cool for that, there’s still time to find out what all the hype surrounding Robert Eggers directorial debut is been about.

ZOOTOPIA (March): Disney heads back into theaters with this 3D animated buddy cop film. Zootopia takes viewers into a world populated with anthropomorphic animals. The film’s title is also the name of the lively metropolis where an optimistic bunny becomes the first of her kind to join the police force. She soon learns that she’ll have to fight prejudice as she struggles to fit in with the bigger animals. Unexpectedly, a daring mystery soon presents itself as a way for her to prove herself. It’s Disney; you know you want to see it. THE LOBSTER (March): This is a single person’s worst nightmare and greatest challenge. A love story like no other, the dramedy is set in a future where single people are detained and sent to a place where they have 45 days to find a mate. If they are unsuccessful, they are transformed into an animal and released into the wild. Colin Farrell plays a lovelorn man who escapes imprisonment and joins a faction of people who live in the woods and fall in love on their own time. It’s a wicked satire on a society that’s arguably obsessed with being in a relationship.
BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE (March): The DC movie universe attempts to hit its stride with this historical comic book film. Two of the world’s greatest superheroes go head to head in an epic blockbuster. Dawn of Justice’s predecessor, Man of Steel, was met with mixed reactions and critique. This has led to some apprehension toward the BvS, mainly deriving from comic book fans. Not to mention, new Batman Ben Affleck, was met with contempt when he was first announced as The Caped Crusader. With fans coming around as of late, this superhero slugfest may rid itself of the stigma. Let’s be honest, it has The Dark Knight vs.

The Man of Steel. Your inner child is going insane.
ROOM FULL OF SPOONS (April): This introspective documentary chronicles the making of the cult classic film, The Room. The ‘90s cult phenomenon that arguably started the “it’s so bad, it’s good” remark in film, is given an in-depth examination. If you’re not familiar with The Room, please go watch it. You’ll need to watch it to enjoy and understand this film. It’s possibly the worst film ever made and yet, it’s so good. Check it out at the Cinedelphia Film Festival, April 7-23, cinedelphiafilmfestival. com. KEANU (April): The immensely talented comedy dynamic duo of Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele unite for the first film to showcase the two stars together. The two comedians play naïve cousins who must pose as street tough killers when one of them loses their feline friend to a gang. It’s basically one long Key and Peele skit. Take my money now please.
UNDER THE SHADOW (April): One of the most buzzed about indies at Sundance, this Iranian horror flick centers on a mother and daughter, living in Iran during the Iraq-Iran war in 1988, who believe their home is haunted. The film has been compared to the 2014 horror smash hit, The Babadook. This Sundance sensation is in Farsi. cinedelphiafilmfestival.com SING STREET (April): Get your indie fix with this heartwarming homage to 1980’s pop about a Dublin teen who forms a rock band to impress a girl. Catch a case of nostalgia as this film’s soundtrack is chock full of ‘80s pop and rock. It’s almost like one long punk rock music video, with an adolescent love story at the center of it all. VHS MASSACRE (April): What killed the video store? What brought about the demise of physical media? This “2016 Miami International Science Fiction Film Festival Best Documentary” winner explores these questions. Primarily, the film looks at how the rise and fall of home video and other physical media, affected independent film and cult movies, more about appreciating what was lost, than saying farewell. cinedelphiafilmfestival.com
THE NICE GUYS (May):
A hapless 1970’s private eye and a no-nonsense mob enforcer team up to find the connection between a missing girl and a dead porn star. Expect ‘70’s tropes, sleaze, raunchy comedy and the butting of heads between these two buddy cops. —ROB WELLS

This never bothered me because I wasn’t really into sex—but there have been big changes in the last year. I guess I am having a sexual awakening. My sex drive increased, and I’ve started reading erotica and fantasizing about getting kinky. I’ve also been having very strong urges to fuck someone else. As someone who always had strong values and opinions when it comes to sex and marriage and cheating, these feelings really confused me! So I found a safe and harmless outlet: Second Life. I created a hot avatar and have been role-playing, talking dirty, and banging people across the world for six months. I love it. I get to experience scenarios I fantasize about but would never do in real life. Before your readers start pulling the cheater card: I have talked about this with my husband, and I have his blessing. He knows I have an SL account and I’m having cybersex. Here’s where it gets murky. Most of my SL friends haven’t asked if I’m taken in RL, and I haven’t told them that I am. I flirt as if I’m single, though, because I’m worried people will treat me differently if they know I’m married. I do not wish to meet or have RL sex with anyone I meet on SL, and I make that clear to everyone. I don’t do photos/ voice chat/Skype. But if someone asks me if I’m married in RL, I always tell the truth. I’m writing because I’m worried about this one guy. The cybersex is super hot, and he’s sweet. He’s my go-to guy, and I’m his go-to girl. He knows I have cybersex with other people in SL, and I have told him he is obviously allowed to have sex with others too. But I’m worried our SL relationship has become a bit more. He leaves me messages when I’m not online, telling me he misses me and “loves being with me,” and I’ve said the same to him. I’ve also made it clear I have no intention of meeting anyone from SL in RL, ever. Regardless of my intentions, I’m worried that I’m crossing the line and being unfair to my husband. I’m also worried that I’m being unfair to my guy in SL, because I’m sure he must think I’m single, even though he has never asked. Am I crossing the line
I am a kinkster. I have been since I can remember (I am now 21 years old), and I’ve never told anyone about my deep dark desires until the last year. During my time at university, I made good friends with a guy who I was able to open up to about my preferences, as he had similar desires. We created a beneficial arrangement. I suddenly no longer felt like I needed to suppress my “fucked up” masochistic needs and became extremely happy and more comfortable with them. I keep a journal, and naturally I wrote about this arrangement and a lot of the explicit details. Last summer, my mother read my entire journal and was horrified. After she read it, I received a very nasty text message from her about how our relationship was over, she couldn’t believe what I had done, and she was no longer going to help pay for my postgraduate courses, etc. She was deeply disturbed to learn that some money she had given me for my 21st birthday was spent on a hotel room where I met up with my kinky friend. (It wasn’t like we could meet in my family home!) I never wanted my mother to know about any of this, and I feel bad for how it upset her, but this was also a huge violation of my privacy. The only way to resolve the situation was for me to pretend that I deeply regretted everything, tell her I can see now how messed up those “weird” sex practices are, and say that I’m cured and will never engage in them again. Months have passed and I’m still angry with her for having read my diary. I feel sad about the lies I told and having to pretend—still— that I regret what I did. Because the truth is I’ve never felt more like myself than when I am doing BDSM. It’s not my entire world, but it is an important part of who I am. How do you think I should take things from here? She’ll never understand, so telling her isn’t an option, but that means suppressing my deep upset at her as well. —Mother Unfairly Destroyed Daughter’s Libido Entirely Fuck mom; be you, MUDDLE. n
