Philadelphia Restaurant Festival
T
he teams from UpcomingEvents.com and Philly2Night.com have partnered up to present the Philadelphia Restaurant Festival, sponsored by Modelo Especial and GrubHub. The huge fest will feature hand-crafted food and drinks from more than 50 local chefs and vendors, and it’s all happening among the exhibits at the Academy of Natural Sciences. “It really lends itself to an amazing backdrop for a restaurant event,” says Ray Sheehan, President of Philly2Night.com. “Not only will you have the experience of going down this culinary adventure, you’ll also have the experience of all the museum’s exhibits, whether it’s the African exhibits with all these exotic animals, or the dinosaur room with these massive beautiful fossil displays.” The theme of the evening, “sensory overload,” is almost an understatement. Guests will have access to the entire museum, while VIP ticket holders can gain early entry and a VIP lounge in the museum’s library. Modelo, Lucha Cartel and 1100 Social have partnered to create special beer pairings for the event, but there will be also be more than 20 distilleries, breweries
(including local faves like Yards and Saint Benjamin Brewing) and wineries on hand, offering craft cocktails, wine pairings and spirits. It’s all topped off with live music by Tim Williams and DJ Joe Broscoe. Top chefs and city staples including Revolution Taco, Insomnia Cookies, Bru, Chickie and Pete’s, Milkboy, Fat Jack’s BBQ, Chima and more will be in attendance, blowing up your taste buds with their carefully crafted menus and culinary expertise. In the midst of the all the fun and revelry, however, is an event with a heart. A portion of the proceeds will support local food based charities, including Philabundance, the Food Trust, and the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger. “You know we have this great food event, but there are some real food-related issues in the city,” says Sheehan. “One it raises awareness, but more importantly, we hope to raise some money.” —FRANCES ELLISoN

Jodi Proger shares her home—and bed—with a deer.
I
first heard of Wheezer when he appeared on my Facebook wall. A few Philly friends had shared photos of a deer on a futon and I needed to immediately know more. That led me to friending Jodi Proger, the deer’s caretaker. I forgot about the deer and Jodi for a while, until this PW issue’s theme came up. While brainstorming for a story on an unusual pet relationship, the image of the deer on the futon popped back into my head and I was back on Facebook messaging Jodi. We set up a phone call and I learned that she and her deer, “Wheezer” live in Ohio, so forgive me for the non-localish story, but this one seemed too quirky to let state boundaries kill it. I think I might have expected Jodi herself to be quirkier than she actually was. I mean, I don’t have any friends who have deer sleeping in their living room, do you? But she sounded much like most of my girlfriends would on the phone. Jodi never sought out having a pet deer, she more or less stumbled upon Wheezer. It was almost three years ago now that Jodi had a very interesting trip to the store. That’s when she first saw the fawn that would become Wheezer. “He was running frantically back and forth, back and forth along the road and I saw him while I was driving and I wasn’t going to stop and kept driving, but I turned around and came back,” Jodi says. Wheezer’s mom was laying by the side of the road having been hit by a car. Jodi said it didn’t take much coaxing for the fawn to let her pick him up, adding that she knew if she left him there, he would soon be the victim of a car as well. “So I scooped him up, went over, checked his mom to make sure she was actually dead, which she was. I told him to tell his mom goodbye and I brought him home.” That first day with Wheezer was spent
getting him milk replacement formula and blankets for him to sleep in on Jodi’s porch. (Deers don’t just go immediately from the woods to the futon after all). But it didn’t take long for Jodi to bring Wheezer into the house. “I had to feed him every four hours. So he was actually in our bed and he slept in the bed between me and my husband and the dog and the cat.” Don’t worry folks, Jodi assures us it’s a king-sized bed. She built an enclosure in their backyard so Wheezer could run and began the six months process of housebreaking him. Now she reports he goes to the door and asks to go out, just like their dog. When he got bigger (growing a significant pair of antlers) Wheezer got his own futon that folds out to a bed. He still likes to sleep in the house at night. Although Jodi admitted, “He was actually in our bed last night. When he stretches out he kind of shoves dad to one end and mom to the other and he’s like in the middle of the bed.” Bed hog. And if you’re thinking it might get interesting at Jodi’s house, you’re right. She posts videos to social media for Wheezer fans to see what he gets into, which is mostly the cupboards in search of his favorite treats, Nilla Wafers and Strawberry Twizzlers which he’s been known to steal in preference over his healthier carrot flavored horse treats. Although this story might sound silly to some, there’s a not so fun part. Wheezer is a bit of a fugitive these days, he’s living in limbo, and by state law not supposed to be kept as a pet. Jodi says because of this, no veterinarian will see him, which makes it impossible to have him neutered. Jodi is hoping for either a pardon or that a House Bill called Trooper’s Law will pass that will enable rescue exceptions to the “no wildlife as pets” current law. n

Forever Home Heart-warming rescue success stories. << CHaRLIE Charlie came to us as a 10-year-old rescue. He is part Lab and part German Shepherd and has been with us since last May. Before that, Charlie had an incredibly challenging year that had him moving from three different homes before coming to us. Our first meeting lasted about an hour as Charlie was brought to my house. While I sat on the floor in the middle of the living room, Charlie nervously and pensively circled me, at times getting closer and then retreating. After about 20 minutes, Charlie came close enough for us to interact, me petting his head and he sniffing and eventually licking my hand. Within the hour, I decided to accept Charlie as a new member of our family, and he came to live with us a couple days later. Charlie, at first, was a very nervous and stressed animal, confused by the tumultuous year he had experienced. But within a couple months, he became more comfortable and content with his new home and family. Charlie has grown to love us unconditionally, but no more than we have grown to love him. —Ray CROSS
<< RHUBaRB (RUE) Adopted: Oct. 2014, Morris Animal Refuge I was nervous going to the shelter, this was my first dog. Tom assured me that I’d love our new dog in no time. I knew Rue was the one when he calmed down in the shelter yard and let us walk and hold him. It’s emotional to visit a shelter sometimes but you have to give the animals a chance to show their personalities. They are nervous too! A week later he came home with us. Adopting an older dog meant he was already house trained and knew how to walk on a leash. So we focused on making him happy and learning his new routine. We’ve had him for a year and a half now and I’m so glad we gave him a chance. —TOM
CLEaRy anD HOLLy SIEMOn MISTy and her siblings were found behind an apartment complex after Hurricane Sandy— the mother was nowhere to be found. The litter was put up for adoption online. Misty stood out to us because of her gray marbled fur and spunky personality. She’s been a welcome addition to our family ever since!
Here is my cat LEO (above). He was part of a litter that was found by Philadelphia Animal Control. He is very cool because: 1. He is a people cat. 2. He’s very handsome. 3. He is a Facebook celebrity. 4. He can work doorknobs and has a pretty extensive vocabulary. 5. He never scratches but he does bite, even when playing.

Senior Moments
Y
ou’re looking to adopt a dog. The first thought that comes to your mind is that of a youthful cute puppy. Why not? Puppies are adorable, affectionate and so lovable it’d be strange not to want one. However, look at the situation objectively. Puppies demand time and patience. An owner needs energy to combat a puppy’s exuberant energy and lack of training. They can be a handful. What’s the alternative? Remove the need for time and patience and you have a well trained older canine that can be just as loving and adorable as any puppy. Deanne Schmidt, PSPCA manager of adoptions, rescue and fosters, corroborates this, as she’s seen it firsthand. “One of the benefits is that you don’t have to go through all the puppy nonsense.” The Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA) is looking to bring about awareness surrounding adopting older dogs. Schmidt is spearheading this great initiative. Nothing is ever completely ideal. Adopting an older dog does come with its own struggles and realizations. “Some older dogs are perfectly healthy and just have arthritis or some of the joint issues that we all have as we get older,” says Schmidt. Schmidt acknowledges that there are ways to combat the trials of aging for an older dog. “With supplements these dogs get around fine for the rest of their lives.” Like a puppy, an older dog has its own dilemmas, but it’s worth the effort. These dogs are eager to find a home and have ended up in a shelter due to unfortunate circumstances. Schmidt really emphasizes the importance of understanding the situation of these animals. “For many older dogs they end up in the shelter through no fault of their own, people surrender them because their owner has passed or they lost their home and they end up in an apartment, so the dog ends up here and they’re looking for a home.” Many prospective adopters may believe that these dogs bring baggage from previous owners. Even when that’s the case, the PSPCA tries to solve those issues. “We certainly do have our share of animals that need extra care or training, but we get so many animals in that are picture perfect,” says Schmidt. —ROB WELLS

Hello Kitty
Philadelphia’s First Cat Cafe Is Up and Running In Brewerytown.
L
e Cat Café gives potential cat owners and cat lovers an opportunity to form a connection with the many cats naturally roaming around the cafe. The Parisian themed cat cafe has up to 12 cats roaming around and exploring the cat-inspired architecture. The cats can hop up and chill on the walkway, have some cat-time in the hollowed out chairs, or climb on the Eiffel tower. The lighting in the cat cafe is dimmed and subtle—perfect for an all day cat-snooze. The idea of cat cafes has been around for some time. The first cat cafe was opened in Taipei, Taiwan in 1998. Although cat cafes started in Taiwan the trend did not pick up until cat cafes started opening up in Japan, which now has about 150 of these feline spots. Cat cafes are said to have become popular because the small apartment/ condo size in Japan limited residents from owning pets. The trend then took over Europe and eventually landed in the United States two years ago with the announcement of “KitTea” in San Francisco. Cat cafes have been gaining popularity in the states ever since. Kathy Jordan, the founder of Le Cat Café and the nonprofit Green Street Rescue, has been doing rescue work for many years. Jordan has a full-time job but it is clear rescuing cats is a big part of her life. “I’ve lived a life of finding and meeting other people who rescue cats. It’s just like you become a golfer, you gravitate towards other golfers and just hang out in golf clubs. It’s not—hanging out and trapping cats in the dead of the night in bad neighborhoods isn’t quite as luxurious as golfing,” Jordan says with a laugh. In April of 2014 Purina One hosted a pop-up cat cafe in New York City. Jordan and her friends went to scope it out—she described the experience as “a Starbucks with cats”. After a successful free-roaming event at Pet-a-Palooza and a trip to D.C.’s new cat cafe, Crumbs & Whiskers, Jordan had a problem: how to avoid being a coffee shop or a bakery. The answer, offered by a friend that also runs nonprofits, was simply serve free coffee and at the same time side-step possible health code violations. The free beverage comes in the form of one k-cup which includes the option of coffee, tea, or just plain water. Once the coffee shop/bakery problem was out of the way Jordan started making calls about possible locations. The landlord of the 2713 West Girard Avenue property turned out to be the son of a woman Jordan had helped in a cat rescue a few years prior. Jordan took it as a sign and started the paperwork for the property. After the lease was signed the hard work began; construction, getting a zoning permit, and a lack of digitalization in the city’s paperwork process. It takes a village to raise a kid and it took a village of selfless people to bring the cat cafe together. Jordan explained that in addition to volunteers; electricians, carpenters, an IT technician, plumbers, and an interior designer all donated their time. “I just had a lot of compassionate people who love the feeling of giving back and wanting to help… this is what they helped me create,” Jordan says. In October of 2013 Jordan talked to her French neighbor—who had commented about the lack of cat cafes in 14 | Philly Weekly | March 17 - 23, 2016 | phillyweekly.com

the U.S.—about her own future plans to open one. Jordan and her neighbor went out to dinner one night and the name “Le Cat Café” was born. The Parisian theme is prevalent throughout, from the huge Eiffel tower, to the French bistro chairs and tables, and a vendor cart that could be fresh from a Parisian park. After a lot of hard work from Jordan and all the volunteers, Le Cat Café opened on March 6 of this year. At the Purina One NYC pop-up cat cafe, Jordan and her friends waited in a line that went around the block several times. The Le Cat Café had a similar response with cat enthusiasts lining up down the block. Jordan said the opening went smoothly despite the crowds. Le Cat Café runs on 1-hour blocks. Guests get one hour with the cats, but can buy back-to-back blocks if they choose. The fee for students and military is $10, online reservation $12, and walk-ins $15. There are also special events including Cats and Mats Yoga, Purrlates (Pilates with cats), Furrytails Storytime (storytime for kids), Paw-sages (a professional massage) and Senior Moments with Cats (for senior citizens). If a guest wishes to adopt a cat, they just need to fill out an application either in person or online at greenstreet rescue.org. Jordan said that it takes them about 24-36 hours to review applications and follow-up with a call. Applicants also need to provide a vet reference if they previously owned a pet, and three friend or family references. The adoption fee is $110 for one cat and $135 for two cats. “We’ve spent a lot of our heart and soul and money to get these cats in a position to go to their ‘forever home’,” Jordan says. “We want to make sure it’s a serious process, just like you would adopting a child.” When I visited, I was lucky enough to see two new rescued cats be let out for the first time in their temporary new home at the cafe. One cat hopped onto my lap after wandering around for awhile—the Le Cat Café was now her home. Le Cat Café is a safe haven for cats who are abandoned, abused, or barely managing to survive in the city. The hope is that its opening leads to more adoptions and cat cafes in Philadelphia. n

THE PET ISSUE
Derek | Endurance Athlete Heart Transplant
| By JaCqUElInE RUPP @PhillyJackie
Cat Caretaker D
escribed by fellow-fosterers as a rock star, Holly Dixon is a Fishtown resident who accidentally got involved in taking in cats and kittens from shelters while they were in the process of finding forever homes. These days she’s not only an active member of the city’s Animal Control and Care Team’s foster program, she’s an advocate of what fostering can bring to a human’s life as well.
How did you first become involved in fostering cats. It was about eight years ago. A friend was going to foster for a shelter in New Jersey, and it turned out her boyfriend was allergic, so she asked me to take over for her and at that point it sort of snowballed for me into a borderline obsession. (Laughs)
How many cats come through your house each year?
I was in severe heart failure and needed a transplant. People told me it meant I’d never live a full life. I wasn’t about to settle for that. So I found a place that won’t settle either: Penn Medicine. They’re not just healing heart disease, they’re working to end it. One week after the heart transplant, I started training. One year later, I became a triathlete. Now, I live every day like my donor is watching.
Never settle. Learn more at PennHeart.org or call 800.789.PENN (7366) today.
If I don’t take many litters and just stick to the adults, it’ll probably be slower like 10 or 15, but kittens, you can have five or six in a litter, those are easy to put in off-site placement with ACCT because they go so quickly. So, shoot, if I start with kittens this year, it could be like 50 cats. It all depends on what you choose. Some people aren’t high volume fosters and they stick to PTSD cats who have been someone’s cat for 10 years and then they get thrown into a shelter and they shut down and are very reactive because they don’t know that situation. Some people specialize in cats like that, where it can take six or seven months before they can become adoptable.
Is it difficult to give up the cats? Oh, absolutely. I have five foster failures right now. (Laughs) If you keep a cat though, that’s one less cat that you can save. So you have to realize as special as that cat might be, there’s probably that special person that deserves a cat like that too. At least with ACCT we have a great online group so if anyone has questions or problems, there’s a whole bunch of people that have fostered for years, and they’re a great wealth of knowledge on fostering. People do get a lot of support and now that
16 | Philly Weekly | March 17 - 23, 2016 | phillyweekly.com
we have so many of the off-site placements it’s made it so much easier to get your cats adopted. My last foster fail was a kitten from ACCT, she was part of a litter of three, and two of her littermates contracted FIP, which is always fatal. I couldn’t let her go because I was worried at any point she might slip and become a fatality and I didn’t want to give that to somebody. I felt like I owed it to her siblings to hang on to her. She’s a ball of fun now.
Do you get the crazy cat lady jokes a lot? I think a lot of us have learned to embrace the crazy cat lady title. (Laughs) But I think anyone can own cats and be totally normal! I go out with my friends, I’m an editor by day. I work at the National Board of Medical Examiners so I travel for work, so it’s not about cats all the time.
What’s one of your best memories so far of your fostering experience? Volunteering has been kind of amazing to me. I was at the ACCT shelter during one of the Clear the Shelter adoption events, after 22 dogs had been euthanized. People just came out in droves to clear the shelter of all the animals and it was just an unreal experience to stand in the hallway and see a line, not just down the hall, but out the door. People just rising to the occasion and making sure all these unwanted homeless animals found a loving home.
What’s your advice for someone thinking about giving fostering a try? Kitten season has already started. Give it a try, the worst thing that can happen is you fall in love with a pet and keep it. You can also save hundreds of lives by taking a cat off the streets and getting it fixed. We have a huge problem with cats in Philadelphia and a lot of people just see them as a nuisance, but if we could just get them all fixed, eventually that problem will fix itself. We’re planning to do classes for new fosters, all the basics. We have a new foster feline coordinator and she’s fabulous and we have a lot of plans to make it more welcoming for newcomers this year. n

’m a 27-year-old, feminist, conventionally attractive, straightish, GGG woman. Over time, my tastes have changed, and now I find myself more of a kinkster. A few years ago, my desire for kinkier sex and my willingness to take a chance came together in a mutually beneficial, exciting D/s relationship. I’ll be honest: I wasn’t as smart as I could have been. I met this guy on Tinder, and after verifying his identity, I told some friends where I’d be and I met up with him. He was great for a while, but a big move took me away from the area and I grew tired of his conventional gender ideals. I assumed I would find another partner in the future as functionally great as him but maybe a better conversationalist. Fastforward to today. I’ve dabbled with pain and submission play with a few boyfriends with no great success. (A subsequent partner who didn’t respect my safe word, in fact, assaulted me.) I’m now greatly discouraged in my search. The cycle always goes like this: I get horny and want kink, I go looking for it online, and I am then buried in a landslide of creepiness, typos, and aggression. There are just so many men out there who hate women. These men are more interested in condescending to me and bossing me around than they are in power exchange. It was recommended to me to join the local center for sex positivity in Seattle, but that costs money. I want to engage in kink to relieve stress, not to cut into my already tight budget. Are my only options perseverance or an extra grand lying around? —Perseverance Or Withdrawal, Eternal Regrets I definitely think you should keep hacking your way through the creeps, typos, and aggros, POWER, and, more importantly, your pussy thinks so too—excuse me, that’s crude. Perhaps I should say: Your erotic imagination and your libido think so too. But you may find the search for kinky play partners a little less frustrating if you devote a few hours a week to it—set a regular schedule: two hours a night, twice a week—instead of waiting until horniness and desperation drive you back online. If you search for kinky guys only when you just gotta have it, your inability to find it immediately is gonna be that much more frustrating. And you might wanna get out there and find a kinky guy now, POWER, while you still can. “Uh-oh, kinksters: Sex cops could be coming for you next,” Elizabeth Nolan Brown writes at Reason.com. “According to a new federal court decision, Americans have no constitutional right to engage in consensual BDSM because ‘sexual activity that involves binding and gagging or
the use of physical force such as spanking or choking poses certain inherent risks to personal safety.’ Thus officials could constitutionally ban or regulate such activity in the interest of ‘the protection of vulnerable persons,’ the court held.” In 2003, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Americans have a constitutional right to get their asses fucked, and one day soon we could be asking the Supreme Court whether Americans have a constitutional right to get their asses spanked. Finally, POWER, I’m a huge fan of Seattle’s Center for Sex Positive Culture (thecspc.org). And I’m an even bigger fan of people getting out there, meeting up IRL, and making face-to-face connections with like-minded kinksters. I’m such a big fan that I’m going to pick up the expense of your first year’s membership at the Center for Sex Positive Culture. While there are additional charges for most events at the center, POWER, there are also tons of volunteer opportunities—and there’s no better way to get to know the local kinksters than to pitch in and help out. I’ll email you directly about your shiny new membership. I am the only liberal in my family. I love them, but there is no talking to them on the issues. I have come up with the idea of a Planned Parenthood jar. It is like a swear jar, but I will put money in it when I am too chickenshit or conflict-avoidant to have a hard conversation. Every time one of my family members puts up a stupid, ill-informed article on Facebook and I don’t say anything, I will put money in the jar. Any time they tell me why Hillary Clinton is the devil, I will put money in the jar. It will assuage my guilt and make those moments easier because I can smugly think: “Keep talking, the only one you are helping is Planned Parenthood.” Is this a cop-out or a narrowly tailored, appropriate penance? —Fearful And Milquetoast, I’m Leaning Yellow Can’t something be a cop-out and a creative, appropriate penance? But whether it’s one or the other or both, FAMILY, I’m strongly in favor of anything that benefits Planned Parenthood. For those who don’t want to go through the motions of filling a jar with money before making a donation, just go to plannedparenthood.org and click Donate. n
