n the aftermath of what is arguably the best sports moment to ever happen to this city, there are scores of people who still can’t quite believe it. Days after the Eagles defeated the Patriots 41-33 to win the city’s ďŹ rst Super Bowl title, talk to people and they’ll say that there is still a bit of disbelief, that the years of getting so close but falling short still haze the reality that this year the team reached the top of the mountain and planted our ag. Despite the 24-7 Eagles coverage since the win, the mad dash for Super Bowl champion merchandise and the fact parade details have ďŹ nally been out, it’s still a blur. “I can’t believe it, I mean I got to be honest it still hasn’t set in,â€? said Kirsten Madison, 28, one of the thousands who transcended upon South Broad Sunday night to take in the moment in a scene that if you were there, let’s just say, is something you’ll never forget. “I’ve been waiting for so long, but I think of people like my dad and my [older brother] who are die-hards and are just besides themselves at home. It’s so surreal, like we ďŹ nally fucking did it. So awesome.â€? Despite all the jubilation that took place all over South Broad and across the Greater Philadelphia Region, the shock and awe from this team, a team that had Pro Bowl caliber players out for the season, a second-

year coach who never held a head coaching spot in the NFL and touted a QB replaced by a quality and relative unknown who became a Super Bowl MVP. It’s the stuff of movies, really and a movie that hasn’t come to Philly for a long time. I remember when the Phillies won in 2008. I remember the happiness when Villanova won a national championship. Both pale in comparison to this moment. “That shit was great but it doesn’t hold a candle to this,â€? said “another fanâ€? among the crowd Sunday night, who talked to me but didn’t want to give his name since seconds earlier he was getting pulled down off the light pole by cops. In fact, his buddy is the one gracing this very cover. “Everyone in Philly is an Eagles fan, this one means so much more than the other ones. Not to doubt our other sports teams as people would still be happy to see the Sixers win and the Flyers win, but to me and I know to a lot of people it just doesn’t compare.â€? So when will reality set in? For many, it’ll ďŹ nally sink in when the team passes them by on buses waving the Vince Lombardi Trophy in the air as they stroll down Broad or when the team thanks fans for their love and adoration on the steps of the Art Museum later that day. Maybe it’ll sink in next year, when our Birds will have the X on their back from 31 other NFL teams as they defend the title. Honestly, I hope not. I hope the shock and awe never go away, and that this feeling of “holy shit, we’re world champs,â€? lasts for a long, long time. We’re the fortunate ones of so many Eagles fans who got to witness history. Enjoy responsibly, Philly. Q TWITTER: @SPRTSWTR

PHANDEMONIUM
It’s one of those “remember when moments. The night you watched Tom Brady hurl a Hail Mary to the end zone and watched that same football fall to the turf, thus assuring the Eagles their first Super Bowl title. For a majority, it meant going berserk in the confines of your own home, cheering, crying and hugging out the elation of ending Philadelphia’s NFL world championship drought. However, for thousands of Philadelphians all across the region it meant descending upon major intersections and causing mayhem. From climbing light poles on Broad and Walnut to chanting “Big Dick Nick on Frankford and Cottman to climbing the two-story high gates of City Hall, Philly expressed its love and devotion for a football team bordering on extended family as only Philly could. For the first time, Philadelphia will host a parade for a Super Bowl champion Eagles team up Broad Street, but to the scores of you who got the party started Sunday night, consider this a mini photo album of a lasting memory. – KERITH GABRIEL | @SPRTSWTR

This little cutie poops green, which, according to her father, is a sign she was destined to be an Eagles fan.
Baby birds
Meet the next gen of Eagles fans and why we’re jealous of their insta-success BY MIKE GREGER
I
magine living in a world where the Eagles never lose? Cumulus clouds paint Eagles wings in the sky. Street poles are always greasy. And newborn babies poop green. Colin Ashmore, a Manayunk resident who has owned season tickets for 13 years, is only half-joking when he describes his 2-week old daughter, Olivia Marie, as a good luck charm.
)(%58$5<
And the proof may be in the diapers. “We can’t tell if she bleeds green yet, but she poops green, he said. “I look at her and think, ‘You were around for two weeks and you get to see a Super Bowl. I had to wait 34 years, so she’s starting life out on a good note. Many of the region’s newest dads are starting to come to grips that their football team – those lovable losers eating ice cream and wearing creepy dog masks – are now Super Bowl champions.
Carlo Tedesco is a Philly transplant now living in the football wasteland that is the Washington, D.C. area. With the Eagles win, his life and perhaps his entire being is now forever complete. “Marriage, check. Kid, check. Eagles winning the Super Bowl? That’s my whole bucket list,â€? says the Eagles diehard of 38 years. “Seriously now, I can die happy.â€? Tedesco has been serenading his daughter, Olivia Eileen, with the Eagles ďŹ ght song every day since her birth seven months ago. It’s the ďŹ rst thing she hears when she wakes up and the last thing she hears when she goes to bed. “She smiles at me through the whole song,â€? he says. “She’s enamored with football. She gets upset, gets a kind of annoyed look on her face, when we block the TV.â€? This shared love for family and football are at an alltime high in an underdog city starved for a championship. Nick Foles got choked up with emotion recently when a reporter asked him to talk about his improbable journey to Minneapolis. Fighting back tears, welling up inside his eyelids like heavy rains on the Schuylkill River, Foles’ mind wandered to his newborn. “Now to be a father, that changes everything. It takes the pressure away because I get to go home to her every night. No matter what happens — no matter if I play a horrible game, she loves me. She has no idea...â€? Ashmore can relate wholeheartedly. He sings the ďŹ ght song to his daughter every day, calling it her â€œďŹ rst lullabye.â€? He adds another wrinkle at bedtime, a tradition that further exempliďŹ es the unbridled passion that many ignorant outsiders have been calling into question. “I whisper ‘Dallas sucks’ to her at night,â€? Ashmore said. “I want to teach her that she doesn’t have a choice in this thing, subliminal messaging is going to be drilled in there.â€? There is a slightly different dynamic in the Tedesco household. You see, Carlo’s
wife, Lauren, was born and raised a Giants fan. And, despite her unholy allegiance to that “other teamâ€? up the turnpike, Olivia Eileen will be raised an Eagles fan. This is serious business, after all. When Lauren’s cousin sent them a Giants outďŹ t, Carlo hastily picked up the phone. “I told him, ‘You just wasted your money because my daughter isn’t wearing it.’â€? Much has been made in recent weeks about what it means to be an Eagles fan. Vikings fans have called us uncivilized. Patriots broadcasters have referred to us as animals. They don’t understand the intense cauldron that boils over from decades of ďŹ nishing second. But this year, there was a surprising calm among the fan base, a feeling that this was ďŹ nally our year. Ashmore and Tedesco truly believe their baby girls are good luck charms– and hopefully harbingers of future rings to come. “I feel like it’s setting up that way,â€? Ashmore said. “I’ve been in that delivery room, now I know what it feels like to be a father, but I [didn’t] know what it felt like to be a Super Bowl champion. I’m excited to experience that.â€? Joe Darrah, a Northeast Philly native who hosts a local sports podcast, credits what he calls the “Carson Wentz Baby Boomâ€? for all this newfound positivity. He watched the Super Bowl with his threemonth-old son, Joey. Recently Joe’s wife, Jen, sent a video of their son singing the Eagles ďŹ ght song to a local news station. “I think he is lucky to be born at a time when there’s so much joy about this season, and it adds to the joy that has surrounded him from birth,â€? says Darrah. “Joey was born two days before the Redskins Monday Night game, and I’ve watched most games with him.â€? Little Bubby Dude – Darrah’s nickname for his son – adorned a Wentz onesie and kelly green socks for the big game. Similarly, Olivia Ei-
leen dressed in an Eagles onesie with a pink bow on her tiny head; and Olivia Marie dressed in the cute Eagles onesie and ballerina slippers – but the midnight green, not pink onesie – that her mom, Holly, bought for her. When the time is right, after all that green and white confetti has long been swept back into the Philly sewers, all three men will ďŹ ll their offspring in on all the heartbreak and pain that got them to this moment. “You deďŹ nitely have to tell the tale because [all that losing] makes us what we are,â€? Ashmore says. “It hardens you, but it makes you a stronger person. You don’t always get what you want but sometimes you get what you need.â€? Besides, learning the franchise’s tragic history might make them appreciate all the winning on the horizon. This Eagles team, with a healthy Wentz, is set up to be a powerhouse for years to come. There is no Odysseus, without the Odyssey. “Losing sucks, and I don’t want her to have to go through all the heartbreak and misery,â€? Tedesco says. “But I will make sure she knows about it and try to relate to her about why she should appreciate all the winning.â€? As for attending the victory parade down Broad Street with their children, there are varying opinions among them on how to handle that. Darrah says he won’t take Joey, for fear of “[having a stroke] due to happiness.â€? Tedesco doesn’t have the option, since Olivia Eileen was born premature and can’t be near the germ-laden crowd of nearly 4 million expected to invade Center City. And Ashmore...well, he doesn’t want his daughter to wait 34 years like he did. “She’s getting bundled up in a kangaroo pouch strap and we’re going,â€? he said. “This is Philadelphia and you never know if it’s going to happen again.â€? If rumors are true, state Rep. Joanna McClinton will announce her bid for a seat held for years by U.S. Rep. Bob Brady.
Stepping up to the political plate With Bob Brady out, sources claim state Rep. Joanna McClinton wants in BY MAX MARIN AND RYAN BRIGGS
A
bombshell announcement on Wednesday that U.S. Rep. Bob Brady would not seek another term in the 1st Congressional District has ginned up speculation that even more contenders would enter an already crowded Democratic primary. Sources say state Rep. Joanna McClinton is registering a Congressional PAC and will announce her candidacy within a matter of days. McClinton, a two-term legislator whose district covers Southwest Philly and parts of Delaware County, would be the ďŹ rst elected ofďŹ cial to enter the race. She will face off against former Philadelphia Deputy Mayor Nina Ahmad, pastor Michele Lawrence and former trafďŹ c court judge Willie Singletary, who have all already declared. Former Bright Hope Baptist minister Kevin Johnson also announced his bid just a day ago. And Philadelphia Deputy Mayor Rich Lazer, perennial candidate Lindy Li, and nonproďŹ t director Omar Woodard have all previously said they were looking to take a shot at the district. The feeding frenzy for Brady’s seat is being complicated by the impending redraw of the state congressional maps, but political observers are conďŹ dent the Delaware County portion of the district will remain largely intact – if true, that would favor a bi-county incumbent like McClinton. “If Joanna McClinton decides to run, she would be the

overwhelming favorite to win,â€? said Mustafa Rashed, a political consultant who has worked on a number of campaigns. “In the ‘year of the woman,’ she’s extremely qualiďŹ ed and checks all the boxes: an attorney by training, a current elected ofďŹ cial with a track record who represents parts of Delaware County, African American – and the right age to grow into seniority in D.C.â€? A former public defender, McClinton served as chief counsel to state Sen. Anthony Williams before her successful initial bid for ofďŹ ce. When former state Rep. Ron Waters was forced to step down from the 191st District in 2015 over a bribery scandal, McClinton ran for the vacated seat and won with Williams’ support, and easily coasted to reelection the following year. Brady’s abrupt retirement sent the rumor mill spinning in Philadelphia, with a nonstop parade of names being oated by political insiders to replace the 10-term congressman – including ďŹ gures like City Council members Maria QuiĂąones-SĂĄnchez and state Sen. Larry Farnese. Farnese declined to comment when reached by phone. SĂĄnchez denied the rumors, adding she hoped any successor to Brady’s district – assuming it is not radically redrawn – would represent its numerous minority and low-income residents. “The 1st Congressional District is a majority-minority district, home to nearly 130,000 Latinos,â€? she wrote. “It is one of the poorest congressional districts in the country and needs an experienced and proven leader. The residents of this district deserve a substantive, competitive campaign, and I hope to hear from all candidates how they will prioritize the needs of our most vulnerable populations.â€? Q
Clarke to take reins of DCC advisory role Councilman plans to assert influence in party following Brady decision BY MAX MARIN AND RYAN BRIGGS
P
hiladelphia City Council President Darrell Clarke, a powerful ďŹ gure in Philadelphia politics, will take on an ambiguous advisory role inside the Democratic City Committee as rumors swirl that he is seeking to gain more inuence over the local party. U.S. Rep. Bob Brady, who doubles as head of the city’s Democratic party, stunned both the public and close conďŹ dants last week when he abruptly announced he would not seek another term in ofďŹ ce. However, he also indicated he intended to stay on as chair of the DCC, at least for now. Brady will have to seek another term as party chieftain in June. But political insiders say Clarke – whose past political ambitions included a ďŹ zzled

City Council President Darrell Clarke is expected to take a new post within the Democratic City Committee. mayoral bid – could be interested in succeeding Brady as chair. Clarke did not respond to requests for comment about the appointment, but several sources close to the council president described his new role in vague terms, saying Clarke would reportedly serve as an “advisor on government affairsâ€? to Brady on the DCC. Clarke, a former ward leader who left his post years ago, joined party ofďŹ ceholders Wednesday for Brady’s announcement. One ward leader described his presence at the emergency meeting as “very unusual,â€? but saw reasoning behind it. “Brady has to look strong, and right now he looks weak,â€? said Greg Paulmier, leader of the 8th Ward. “Darrell needs Bob – and Bob needs Darrell to hold on to the party.â€? What, exactly, Clarke’s new duties would entail was not clear. Clarke’s allies said privately the new arrangement was a precursor to him eventually running for chair. But others saw the new gig as a mere consolation prize after Brady’s snap decision to hang on to the chairmanship after his retirement from Congress. While more than a dozen of the city’s 69 ward leaders hold other elected posts, Brady has long been the sole ofďŹ ceholder in the DCC’s top leadership, anking himself with trusted allies. In the past, he has given ambitious Democrats lesser roles within the party’s internal structure. Clarke’s move also coincides with another reckoning within the city’s Democratic apparatus. Past elections have dealt defeats to party-backed candidates, drawing the aging committee structure’s power into question. Meanwhile, new political advocacy groups like Philadelphia 3.0 and Reclaim Philadelphia have been urging reform-minded candidates to run for both vacant and tenured posts – some of which can be won with only a few votes – in hopes of replacing long-standing committee people and ward leaders. Ward sources said Brady and others are concerned about maintaining the committee’s relevance and sway over city politics. An inux of new blood could bring about a “seismic changeâ€? that is “probably long overdue,â€? said David Thornburgh, executive director of Committee of Seventy, a nonpartisan watchdog group. The group has been hosting informational sessions for aspiring candidates ahead of the May primary. “This is the story of politics,â€? Thornburgh said. “The next generation is going to knock on the door and say, ‘What about me?’ It’s a healthy thing, but it’s not going to be without tension.â€? Q TWITTER: @RW_BRIGGS & @MAXMMARIN

Frank X and Johnnie Hobbs Jr. share the stage for the first time as Estragon and Vladimir in “Waiting for Godot.
The show always goes on On stage in Mount Airy, Samuel Beckett’s absurdist masterpiece stays true to form – and proves that it’s always timely BY MAX MARIN “Go and see ‘Waiting for Godot,'â€? British critic Harold Hobson wrote in the Sunday Times in 1955. “At worst you will discover a curiosity, a four-leaved clover, a black tulip; at the best something will securely lodge in the corner of your mind for as long as you live.â€? It’s not exactly a hot take in the world theater today. But rightly or wrongly, Hobson’s early review has been credited with saving the life of Samuel Beckett’s absurdist tragicomedy. And it seems ďŹ tting to understand the life of a play that almost died before it could be truly born – more so for a play that is about, among more speciďŹ c things, life itself.
)(%58$5<
Were it not for Hobson, perhaps Quintessence Theatre Group may not have opened its faithful restaging of “Godotâ€? at Mount Airy’s Sedgwick Theater last weekend. Upon its initial release, Beckett’s opus was met with heckling crowds and reviews that condemned it as a “boringâ€? and “tediousâ€? and “pretentious allegory.â€? Hobson raised our eyes to its beauty. For the unacquainted, do not worry about spoilers. Spoilers imply plots. Plots require things happening. And 65 years after its European debut, “Godotâ€? emphatically remains what one of its many critics called a two-act play in which nothing happens, twice. Barrymore Award-winning actors Frank X and Johnnie Hobbs Jr. deliver ďŹ nely tuned performances as Estragon and Vladimir, the un-
deroccupied duo of tramps who wait for a man named Godot who never comes. They capture much of what audiences have come to love about Beckett’s bizarre anti-quest – the slapstick antics, the comic rapport, the spontaneous existential howls, and, yes, the hopelessness. In the faded opulence of the Sedgwick Theater, a former art deco movie palace, director Ken Marini stays loyal to Beckett’s minimalist set of instructions (“A country road. A tree.â€?) and also to its wiley, exasperated language. Quintessence’s ear for the spirit of “Godotâ€? does not come as a surprise. The 8-yearold troupe has distinguished itself in Philly’s theater scene as a classical preservationist. But perhaps especially in these preening times, their staging should not be taken for granted, either. Over the decades, “Godotâ€? has received more makeovers than a Madonna song. Vladimir and Estragon have been relocated to seedy slums, nuclear wastelands and even post-hurricane New Orleans. The open allegory of the play invites audiences to substitute Godot for the anxieties of any historical moment: Godot as liberation in Nazi-occupied Europe, as FEMA during a natural disaster, as God in our gravest moments of doubt. Some of these interpretations have been more effective than others. But I’m hardly the ďŹ rst to point out that the play is often needlessly muddied by special accents. And yet I can imagine the temptation of staging “Godotâ€? at the Mar-a-Lago, or on the U.S.-Mexico border, or on the White House lawn. How ďŹ tting would it have been to dress Pozzo, the slave-driving circusringer whom our heroes mistake for their savior Godot, as a Cheeto-colored Donald Trump? But also, how predictable in a time when much of the country seems to be gasping for fresh air? Since I saw the show Saturday evening, “Godotâ€? has had me thinking nonstop about our American political moment – and it didn’t require any extra prodding from creative directors. Hobbes and X deliver exuberant performances. Their being African-American lends weight to the characters’ poverty as well as the play’s motifs of corporal abuse. But Quintessence is not the ďŹ rst to cast the roles – written by an Irish expatriate to France – outside of their former boundaries, nor does it appear to be reaching for a statement here. Come, and you will laugh along with Vladimir and Estragon’s struggle for existence. Come and you will despair with them, too. Here, in its rawest form, “Godotâ€? continues to prove its power to lodge itself into our minds for as long as we live. In less than six months, two inmates have died inside Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility, the city's largest jail for male inmates.
Dead after arrival
Why are inmates dying inside this Philadelphia jail? BY COURTENAY HARRIS BOND
I
n less than six months, two people have died inside Philadelphia’s largest correctional facility – at least one from accidental drug intoxication. The latest is 36-year-old George Coley, III, who was found unresponsive in his jail cell inside Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility on Jan. 26. His death remains under investigation by both the Philadelphia Department of Prisons and the Philadelphia Police Department, as both await an autopsy and an ofďŹ cial toxicology report from the Philadelphia Medical Examiner's OfďŹ ce. All of this has provided limited information, but Philly Weekly has learned Coley had been in custody at CFCF since Jan. 25 and was found unresponsive in his cell the next day. Coley, who records show was booked for theft and had prior run-ins dating back to 2000, follows the Oct. 31 death of Ed Zaleski, 53, found dead in his jail cell – alone – from a drug overdose. While Zaleski struggled for years with substance-use dis-

order, his obituary describes him as an “avid power boater, a loyal friend and a great guy, who was the most fun-loving person you would ever meet.â€? He had four children and held a variety of jobs, from acting as a projects manager in a pollution-control company to working in the towing business. “When Ed wasn’t addicted, he was a great man,â€? said Robert Lynch, an attorney representing the mother of two of Zaleski’s children in a suit against the city, the Philadelphia Department of Prisons and the health-care contractor Corizon Health, alleging Zaleski did not receive proper medical treatment behind bars. According to the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s autopsy report, Zaleski died of “accidental drug intoxication.â€? This was just hours after he was picked up on an outstanding warrant for shoplifting video games from Walmart and taken to Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility, the city’s men’s jail. When Zaleski’s ex-girlfriend – who didn’t want to be named to protect her children’s privacy – learned through the medical examiner’s ofďŹ ce that Zaleski had shot four bags of heroin before his arrest and had notiďŹ ed CFCF staff of his condition, she hired Lynch.
“Obviously, it’s their job to get him some medical treatment,â€? Lynch said. “Instead they put him in a cell alone, and he went unwatched, unevaluated for hours.â€? When he was found shortly after 7 a.m. on Halloween, Zaleski was dead. “I can’t speak about his condition when he came to the system,â€? said Philadelphia Department of Prisons spokeswoman Shawn Hawes. “Generally, when inmates are processed in, one of the ďŹ rst questions they are asked is if they are ill or if they have an immediate medical need. If they say they do, they’re normally bumped up in our medical screening process.â€? Hawes said she didn’t know if Zaleski alerted intake staff that he was on drugs or suffering from withdrawal. She said she couldn’t comment further because the case was under investigation. Approximately 75 percent of the city’s jail population have substance-use disorders, and, of those, approximately 20 percent are opioid users, said Bruce Herdman, chief of medical operations for Philadelphia’s Department of Prisons. Of the 28,000 admissions a year, medical staff at the department of prisons puts 8,000 people on one of three nationally-recognized detox protocols. About 6,000 of those inmates receive the Clinical Opiate Withdrawal Scale protocol, Herdman said. Why COWS was not used with Zaleski, and/or why he did not receive medical attention when he showed signs of distress or possible overdose, is unclear. In a sort of grim twist of fate, Zaleski’s death comes at a time when the city’s jails have started a new program to distribute the overdose reversal medication Narcan upon release to inmates with a history of opioid abuse. “It’s a huge increase for risk of death after being discharged because the patients have detoxed, and their tolerance has decreased,â€? said Casey Thompson, CFCF
assistant health services administrator. “So they go home, and they use the same amount that they would have used when they got here, and they’re dying. So this is to help prevent deaths.â€? The department of prisons receives the Narcan from the Philadelphia Department of Health and the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services through a state grant that funded 8,000 kits in 2017 – the majority of which are going to the jails. The department of prisons had handed out a few hundred kits with two nasal spray doses of Narcan to inmates upon release as of December, Herdman said. Public service announcements air daily on the jails’ closed-circuit televisions, explaining why people are at a higher risk for overdose when they leave custody, what an overdose looks like, how to get Narcan, and how to administer it. “The city of Philadelphia and the prison system has given out Narcan for fear that they’re [inmates] going to go back out and they’re going to use right away,â€? Lynch added. “Yet when they come in, when they’re scooped up off the street on a nonsense minor theft charge, they do nothing but put them in a cell by themselves.â€? The department of prisons is also taking part in a University of Pennsylvania study examining the efďŹ cacy of giving inmates naltrexone shots upon release to help prevent relapse into opioid abuse. Naltrexone, also known under the brand names Vivitrol and Revia, is administered once a month, helps reduce cravings, and can only be given to people who have detoxed completely from opioids. More than 300 inmates have volunteered for the study in which it is randomized whether they get the shot right before or right after leaving custody. Dr. George Woody, a University of Pennsylvania psychiatrist who is heading the study, said he

The Hard Numbers:
Drugs and Philly’s prison system 1 Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility on State Road is the city’s largest jail for male inmates. 75 Percentage of inmates among the city’s jail population that suffer from substance-abuse issues according to Bruce Herdman, medical examiner for the Philadelphia Department of Prisons.

The irony in the October substance abuse death of inmate Ed Zaleski was that around the same time city jails started a new program to distribute Narcan to inmates with a history of opioid abuse. expects to publish the results in about a year-and-a-half. “Addiction is a scourge for people, and the devastation that it inicts on people’s lives and the crimes that are committed as a result of their need to sustain their addiction are horrendous,â€? Herdman said. “So if we can ďŹ nd ways to help people stay on a medication as in medication-assisted treatment, reduce their rate of crime, and increase their ability to hold a job and not recidivate, that would be a great contribution.â€? Inmates who are already on methadone or suboxone programs when they are processed are maintained on these medications through an outside group, which comes to the jails. Pregnant women who are addicted to opioids upon entering Riverside Correctional Facility, the female jail, are mandated to start methadone to prevent their newborn infants from going through withdrawal. Herdman is also hoping soon to implement medication-assisted treatment within the city’s jails for all inmates with opioid-use disorders. “That was the recommendation of the mayor’s [Opioid] Task Force,â€? Herdman said. “We don’t have that worked out yet. But that is a possibility.â€? None of these efforts, however, helped Zaleski, whose death remains unexplained. “If he was on the street, he would’ve been given better care by another heroin addict,â€? Lynch said. “If he walked into the hospital and said he’d shot four bags of heroin, they would’ve given him immediate attention.â€? Q TWITTER: @CHARRISBOND

20 Of that 75 percent, approximately 20 percent are direct opioid abusers, again according to the Philadelphia Department of Prisons. 300 The number of inmates who have volunteered for a University of Pennsylvania study that examines the efficacy of giving inmates naltrexone (Vivitrol, Revia) shots upon release to help prevent relapse into opioid abuse. 28,000 Number of admissions to Philadelphia city jails each year. 8,000 Number from that 28,000 the medical staff from the Department of Prisons place on one of three nationally-recognized detox protocols while housed in a city jail. That same number is the amount of Narcan the Philadelphia Department of Health and the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services supplied to city jails in 2017, courtesy of a state grant. Along with pairing off with local theatres whose shows are already in production (e.g., The Wilma and Passing Strange or EgoPo Productions and the Lydie Breeze Trilogy) and offering special festival-speciďŹ c ticket discounts, Theatre Philadelphia worked with Theatre companies to fashion unique events for the fest, such as staged readings and panel discussions.
There are more than a few opportunities to eat and drink in the name of Theatre Philadelphia such as the Opening Night Kickoff Party at Yard’s Brewing Company (5-7 p.m., Feb. 8). A stage production such as Iron Age Theatre’s collaboration with Theatre in the X at the Community Education Center tells a story of the Black Panther Party during Black History Month, and connects it to this ďŹ rst Philly Theatre Week. Then there is Karl Jenkins — aka Dice Raw, an occasional mouthpiece for The Roots — who makes an appearance during Black History Month and Philly Theatre Week with his second, self-penned Theatre piece, Henry “Boxâ€? Brown: a Hip Hop Musical. Running inside Bonnell Auditorium at the Community College of Philadelphia, the riveting rap musical stars its co-author Jenkins and tackles the myths and truths of “Boxâ€? Brown – the legendary Virginia-based slave who – upon losing his wife – found a way to quell his frustration at being enslaved. He mailed himself in a box to Philadelphia and subsequent freedom. From there, “Boxâ€? Brown came alive and became prominent for
his writing and his on-stage antics as a hypnotist, dancer, magician and singer. “I started writing Box during The Last Jimmy,“ says Jenkins, referring to his 2015 play dealing with Jim Crow laws, the unfairness of black-male incarceration and presentday forms of enslavement. “Box’s narrative is very enlightening: coming from Virginia to Philly, the love story with his wife and having her moved to another plantation. There’s a lot of meat on that bone.â€? Despite the success of The Last Jimmy (along with selling out several Theatre runs in Philly, he’s performed it in LA and Miami), Jenkins says few were interested in the “Boxâ€? Brown musical. “It wasn’t a lot of Theatres’ cup of tea. They didn’t believe it would have an audience. I won’t say who said this, but I was told a historical Theatre musical wouldn’t y, that black people didn’t want to hear about black history – not during Black History Month or with the heightened awareness of Black Lives Matter.â€? Luckily, Jenkins persisted with his hip-hop musical. The rapper-lyricist-turned-playwright has created an incendiary, engaging – even charming – Theatre piece, not only about freedom, but art and re-deďŹ ning oneself; how in an era of myth-making, some men can blaze their own path and reveal their soft side while doing so. “A song such as ‘Autumn Wind’ does that,â€? says the writer and actor. “In Brown’s own written ‘narrative’ he described this moment in a frightening manner: slave masters came and took the children away from their mothers. The metaphor being the mothers were the trees and the kids were the leaves and the slaves masters were the wind sweeping everything up in their wake. I remember playing that song for a room of people before we mounted the show. They began to cry. That’s how I GOT that I had something here.â€? With two plays under his belt and a third one in the ofďŹ ng, it might seem as if Jenkins is a master multitasker between music and theatre. First, that isn’t true as he has an album and an accompanying book – The Narrative – due this spring. “And besides, I don’t feel necessarily a part of the hip-hop scene or the Theatre scene,â€? says Jenkins. “I don’t believe that The Roots truly did either – feel a part – to be honest with you. What we did was different than the rest of Philly hip-hop which was usually so gangsta and over criminalized. As far as the Theatre scene goes – they reached out when the idea is good and I think they dig what I’m doing. For Philly Theatre Week I just hope the reviews aren’t horrible so that people want to see the show.â€? Q Philly Theatre Week | Feb. 8-18. $30. Location and times vary. theatrephiladelphia. org. H
ow does one get into the gay BDSM bottoming and leather scene? – Seeking Answers Concerning Kink
One shows up, SACK. “Eighty percent of success is just showing up,â€? someone or other once said. The adage applies to romantic/sexual success as well as professional success, SACK, but showing up easily accounts for 90 percent of success in the BDSM/leather/fetish scene. (Being a decent human being accounts for the other 10 percent*.) Because if you aren’t showing up in kink spaces — online or IRL — your fellow kinksters won’t be able to ďŹ nd or bind you. But you don’t have to take my word for it‌ “The leather scene is a diverse place with tons of outlets and avenues, depending on how you navigate your life and learn,â€? said Amp from Watts the Safeword (wattsthesafeword.com), a kink and sex-ed website and YouTube channel. “When I was ďŹ rst getting started, I found a local leather contingent that held monthly bar nights and discussion groups that taught classes for kinksters at any level. It provided an easy way into the community, and it helped me meet new people, make new friends, and ďŹ nd trustworthy play partners. If you’re a tad shy and work better online, these contingents have Facebook groups or FetLife pages you can join. And YouTube has a channel for everyone in the kink spectrum from gay to straight to trans to nonbinary and beyond!â€? “Recon.com is a great option for gay men,â€? said Metal from the gay male bondage website MetalbondNYC.com. “It’s a site where you can create a proďŹ le, window-shop for a play buddy, and ‘check his references.’ Even better, if you can, go to a public event like IML, MAL, or CLAW, or to a play party like the New York

Bondage Club, where you can participate in a monitored space with other people around, or just watch the action. Don’t forget the motto ‘safe, sane, and consensual,’ and be sure to have a safe word! And if you do want to explore bondage, take precautions. Never get tied up in your own home by someone you don’t know. If you go to his or her place, always tell a trusted friend where you are going. And when hooking up online, never use Craigslist.â€? “Be cautious,â€? said Ruff of Ruff’s Stuff blog. “There are people out there who view ‘kink newbies’ as prey. Anytime anyone — top or bottom — wants to rush into a power-exchange scene, that’s a red ag. Always get to know a person ďŹ rst. A good-quality connection with any potential playmate is achieved only through communication. If they are not interested in doing the legwork, they’re not the right person for you.â€? I’m a mid-20s, above-average-looking gay dude into spanking guys. The weird thing is, the only guys I can ďŹ nd to spank are straight. It’s not that they’re closeted — most of them go on to have girlfriends, and that’s when we stop — and they make it clear they don’t want anything sexual to happen. No complaints on my end! But why don’t they want a woman spanking them? – Seriously Perplexed And Needing Knowledge
How do you know their new girlfriends don’t start spanking them when you stop? And how do you know they aren’t closing their eyes and imaging that you’re a woman when you’re spanking them? And how do you know they’re not bi — at least where spankings are concerned? (Also: There are tons of gay guys out there into spanking, SPANK. So if you aren’t ďŹ nding any, I can only conclude that you aren’t looking.)

Pursuant to the Land Recycling and Environmental Remediation Standards Act, the act of May 19, 1995, P.L. 4, No. 19952, notice is hereby given that the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation has submitted to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection a Notice of Intent to Remediate a site located at 1201 S. 35th Street, Philadelphia, PA. This Notice of Intent to Remediate states that the site was previously used for various industrial and commercial activities. The primary soil contaminants include volatile organic compounds, semi-volatile organic compounds, and metals, which are likely present from the historical uses of the property. Groundwater currently meets residential used aquifer standards. The site will be cleared of vegetation and all structures will be demolished. The site will be graded for future development, which is expected to be in line with the Lower Schuylkill Master Plan, which envisions developing the area into a commercial and industrial area separated by three districts: 1) Innovation District, 2) Logistics Hub, and 3) Energy Corridor. The proposed remediation consists of excavating the isolated areas of soil impacted above the residential standard and disposing of them at a permitted soil handling facility.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING: I cannot say enough good things about Kathy, Patrick and their team. I have bought and sold a handful of homes through Kathy and Patrick and they have gone above and beyond. I really had to do very little - which made the difference for me. I tell everyone I know that if they plan to buy or sell, go to Kathy and Patrick.. -- Wendy Armstrong
