Picasso at the Barnes

T

he work of the legendary Pablo Picasso is coming to the City of Brotherly Love. The Barnes Foundation in collaboration with the Columbus Museum of Art will bring “Picasso: The Great War, Experimentation and Change” to the city, along with work from Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Juan Gris and Diego Rivera.

The exhibit includes 50 of Picasso’s works from 1912 to 1924 during the First World War, as well as family programs for the kids, Picasso workshops, and lectures based on the famed artist.

Picasso is mainly known for using cubism, except for some of his work done during the First World War. Barnes Manging Curator Martha Lucy says that the dramatic fluctuations in Picasso’s style of work during the war is a focus of the exhibition. “What happened during the war is cubism starts to take on political meanings even though artists didn’t mean for it to be political, cubist paintings started to be interpreted as anti-French, unpatriotic; classicism on the other hand was the way you were supposed to paint if

you were a true patriot.”

During the war Picasso began to shift away from cubism to a more naturalistic style, however he did not completely abandon cubism. “He doesn’t have one style during the war and that in some ways is kind of the whole point of the show.

It’s this very unusual moving back and forth between very fragmented forms, kind of what you think of when you think of cubism where you can barely even make out what the subject is and on the other hand sort of conservative almost realistic,” Lucy says.

The exhibit, which runs throughout May, includes paintings, drawings, watercolors from the artist, as well as 10-foot-tall cubist costumes he designed for the avant-garde ballet, Parade.

e take a lot of photos these days. With our smart phones always at the ready, we snap yet again our lunch plate or our face while belted into our car, instantly posting to the throngs of social media followers our daily happenings. The sheer volume of photos we now see and take is probably larger than it has every been in human history. Gone are the days when you had 24 chances to capture moments on a disposable camera, spinning the film wheel in hopes of still having a few snaps left. Today our photography capabilities seem limitless. Which is why “curation” has become such a catch phrase for this decade. The sheer volume of content demands someone weed out the gems and organize them in some meaningful or at least logical way. We’re used to seeing our neighbors’ photos appear perhaps on our desktop screens, but it’s less common to see similar photos presented in a real-life public forum. There’s a formal elegance to print photos that’s been too often lost to the land of endless bathroom selfies. Imagine walking down a block in Kensington, being invited into someone’s house and having a photo album presented to you. How different would that album be from those found on Facebook? How much more permanent are those images?

The Philadelphia Photo Arts Center (PPAC), based in Kensington initiated a project last year to visually document the lives of residents living in their neighborhood, the results of which will be unveiled later this year.

years, has been joined by renowned conceptual artist Hank Willis Thomas, curator Kalia Brooks and other collaborating artists, in launching The Philly Block Project last September, with a focus on the South Kensington neighborhood that PPAC calls home. The project is twofold, one being the collection and exhibition of photos submitted by local residents to form the Community Archive, and the other being a exhibition of original photography by Thomas and a team of photographers, set to open this fall.

Sarah Stolfa, the Executive Director of PPAC said the concept for the Block Project began as the next logical step in Philly Photo Day’s engagement strategies. “We invite everyone in the city to take a picture and send it to us and we display all of the photos we get [for Philly Photo Day]. Every single picture we got, got in, but there was no way to curate the work. We were feeling like we needed a change” Additional motivation for the project came from the fact that Stolfa and her staff noticed a disconnect between the center and the local residents. “PPAC has been around for a fair amount of time, but the people that returned were generally coming to PPAC from outside of our immediate neighborhood of South Kensington.”

Wanting to find a project to engage the South Kensington community led to the creation of The Philly Block Project, which would focus entirely on the blocks surrounding the American Street PPAC locale. Outreach morphed into documenting and archiving the past and present of a very fluid and changing social scene of the

neighborhood. “This neighborhood is changing or gentrifying and a lot of times that process of gentrification starts with artists or arts organizations moving into an area, the area becomes hip and developers move in. Realizing that we were in some ways a part of that process, made me come up with an idea for a project to engage our neighbors.”

The Community Archive portion of the project has created a visual narrative of South Kensington, what it was and presently is. PPAC members, led by community organizer, Tim Gibbons, have been ringing door bells around the neighborhood since September of last year, asking people to share their photos. The side perk being that these interactions also introduce PPAC to residents.

It has taken a lot of people power to collect the hundreds of photos the art center now has. From family photos of milestones (births, birthdays, and weddings), to the everyday stuff (sitting on rowhome steps, conversing across porches and playground basketball), the photos present an unstaged glimpse into the lives of residents.

In that way, Stolfa says the project is both historical documenting and neighborhood outreach. “Using photography to talk about the people both past and current that live in this neighborhood, I think it’s really important to not only document stories for the purpose of historical record-keeping, but also in terms of talking about who the neighborhood is now, by talking about what that neighborhood was.”

Stolfa adds that this project has been a way for residents to take ownership of their neighborhood. “This is

a way for the neighborhood to say collectively, ‘This is who we are. We are here. We are not abandoned lots. We are not houses to be sold. We are people and families that have lived here for generations.’” This has led to what Stolfa describes as a blurring of lines between artist and audience and even the role art plays in the dialogue of community development. The Community Archive will be on display at the PPAC gallery from June 9 to August 28. Residents of the neighborhood can submit photos for consideration through March 31.

The second phase of the Block Project focuses on photographing present day South Kensignton. Stolfa selected artist Hank Willis Thomas to spearhead this component for many reasons. “While thinking about an artist for that type of project, a few key things were important to me in kind of determining who that artist would be, if they had a relationship with Philadelphia, they were multi-disciplinary, so not just photography, they were very active in their process in showing work outside of the gallery world, and also work collaboratively with either other artists or other organizations.

On every single point, I was led to Hank.” Thomas brought in Kalia Brooks, to curate and collaborate, and after the community archive portion solidified, Thomas and his team of photographers took on a three-block radius of South Kensington during the fall of 2015, with other shoots scheduled for this year.

Unlike some photo shoots which attempt to show off the urban blight of a neighborhood in a type of voyeuristic poverty porn photo essay, Thomas’s goal has been to dig deeper into the families of South Kensington. “One of the things I found so beautiful and amazing was that in these three blocks we’re photographing, there are generations of the same family still living on the same block and they own five houses because their cousin buys one and their daughter buys one, and for me, I’m from the suburbs of Illinois, with no family on this coast. For families to stay that close to each other is something that I don’t think is the norm anymore as it is in other countries,” explains Stolfa.

But she adds that the residents of South Kensington face many challenges, especially from developers. If this project happens again in 10 years, the photos may look markedly different. “Renters are most vulnerable. The rent for Kensington has skyrocketed.” Stolfa tells the story of one cafe owner, Anna, whose decade-old cafe hosted the art center’s scanning events, where

residents were coming in to make prints of their photographs. “We scheduled it two weeks ago during that weekend where we got a lot of snow and had to cancel it.

We rescheduled it and the following Monday, Anna got an eviction notice. The building’s been sold and they’re going to tear it down for luxury housing. Seeing things like that happen is sad because that’s part of the cultural life.”

Thomas will open The Philly Block Project Exhibition on September 8, a full year after he began work on it.

Spending time in the community, talking to residents, getting to know families has always been a central part of the project. This did start out as an outreach project afterall. But the intimacy has allowed the photographers to capture much greater depth to the community and to witness over time their struggles and successes.

Along with the exhibitions, over the course of the year-long project, PPAC is serving as a meeting place for residents, with monthly community meetings, workshops and informal town hall sessions being held in their gallery. A summer street carnival even awaits, right outside the PPAC’s doors. Stolfa says that with their own photos now a part of the gallery, the community not only feels ownership of The Philly Block Project, but of the art gallery they once knew so little about. n Current and former residents of South Kensington are encouraged to submit photographs to the Community Archive Exhibition through March 31, 2016. Digital files, old or recent, can be uploaded at philaphotoarts.org/events/philly-block-project. Up to 10 paper prints can be scanned at PPAC Tuesday through Saturday from 10am-6pm, or at the monthly Philly Block Project meetings.

Community members are encouraged to attend the meetings, even if they do not have a photograph in hand.

Sutherland straps on some spurs to star opposite his famous father in Forsaken.

K

iefer Sutherland has swapped his agent badge of his 24 days for a cowboy hat and revolver in his latest film, Forsaken, which hits theaters Friday.

Forsaken marks the first time that Kiefer and Donald Sutherland play father and son on the big screen. PW chatted with Kiefer to find out what it was like working side by side with dad in this Western drama that also stars Demi Moore and Brian Cox.

Why do you think the Western drama still captures our imaginations?

Well I think for a variety of reasons and obviously it depends from film to film, but there are a few staples that make up a Western and they extend much more deeper than just horses and carriages and six-shooters.

I think there’s a perceived understanding that life was simpler back then and I think historically you’ll find that it wasn’t. But certainly within the genre of film, we perceive that people are either good or bad and that the much larger group of people were taking advantage of this great opportunity in America and they were trying to farm and whether it was the Oklahoma Land Grab or whatever, the settlers who were coming out West were poor people from many different nations and they were just trying to do the right thing and take advantage of this opportunity. There was a much smaller group that was either robbing them or taking advantage of them through monopolies trying to take up their farms because the railway was coming through or they wanted to expand their cattle, and so the Western often put the fight between the good and the bad and that the settlers were people that survived by their strengths and their wits or perished by their weaknesses. In many ways why I think the genre is so effective, is that it’s very black and white. It’s very simple and that is ultimately why I wanted that genre to tell a story of something that is actually quite complicated, which is the dynamic between a father and a son. And ultimately two people in that dynamic needing to forgive each other for different things. And that’s kind of a much muddier story, it’s not as black and white. I thought the two would pair quite well together.

What was it like working with your dad on the film?

Did the dynamic between the two of you off-camera spill over into filming?

There’s about 14 parts to that question. I’ve been wanting to work with my father for 35 years. I think he’s not only one of the most prolific actors in the English language, I think he’s incredibly important. And as an actor whose characters have really dramatically changed from one film to another, this is an actor I not only wanted to be like, but an actor certainly I wanted to work with. So I wanted to do this for a very long time. Having said that, the night before we started shooting was probably the most nerve wracking evening I had, couldn’t sleep at all, very nervous about working with him. And then all of a sudden we started and it went away and I had one of the great acting experiences and film experiences I had with anyone, period. There were times when I’d be watching what he was doing and I’d forget I was actual14 | Philly Weekly | February 18 -24, 2016 | phillyweekly.com

ly in a scene and we’d have to start over but I only meant that out of respect. It was an amazing experience and to the last part, I approach this film like I would any other project, I believe very strongly that what is required for your character and the development of your character is all in the script, is all in the dialogue. I map that out the way I want to map it out. Having said that, there is something about looking into your own father’s eyes, ahh, you know an actor works on his own or her own ability to suspend their disbelief and here I am really not being required to do that, it’s as real for me as I can get. I think it’s a mixture of both. I had to be really aware to let go, if something was to go differently than maybe I had mapped out, I had to be open to letting that go and not trying to fight it. And there were a couple of moments I’m glad I thought of that, because there were a couple of things that happened that were really special to me and real reasons why I’m proud of this movie and they’re absolutely a result that I was working with my real father.

Any take-away lessons learned from him?

We had fun. He’s a very funny guy. And it was very funny, we were both sensitive to this, if there was a scene where we were fighting, that was really dynamic, literally within three beats you kind of shake it off and he would look at me and go, “Y’all right?” and I’d say, “Yeah, I’m good.” and he’d go, “Y’all right?” The thing that I appreciated the most was that we got to work together everyday for seven weeks, and that’s probably the most time I’ve ever spent with my dad in my life. I grew up with my mom and then we knew each other, our relationship started when I was in my late teens, early twenties, and people got stuff going on, and I had a daughter at a very early age...so to have everyday focus on something we were making together that was profoundly special to me.

Any Young Guns flashbacks filming Forsaken?

No, no. But again I can liken Young Guns and Young Guns 2 to the same thing. Billy the Kid in the context of that movie was a victim and was avenging the death of a man who had taken him in and really protected him and was trying to unseat the monopoly in that area of New Mexico, which was killing people to take over their land and anyone who stood in their way. So again, it’s the good people versus the bad people, the horses and the guns and everything else make it quite exciting, but at the root of it, I think Westerns are quite moral films.

Would you say the conflict between standing up for individual rights versus non-violence resonates pretty strongly in the film?

There was a real movement in the West to non-violence.

Violence was not going to cure the problems: white people versus the indigenous Indian population, the settling of the West. And if you take a look at history over the last 200 years and you take a look at what Ghandi managed to accomplish in India, and you take a look at what Martin Luther King managed to accomplish here, they certainly accomplished more than violence ever did. What’s interesting about the West is it wasn’t simply a Quaker movement, it wasn’t simply a Mennonite movement, there was a real non-violence movement within Christianity period. Unfortunately, they were taken advantage of quite badly by people. It’s a very Americana statement that we’ll get one person who will stand up for us and do our bidding. What I liked about it in the context of our film, the son was willing to do what the father had wanted him to do, almost to his death, in order to prove to his father that he could change. I think it’s an important thing to say in a film. And if we’ve made mistakes at a certain point in our lives, that idea that we’re not capable of change is a very bad message. n

Everyday Life ... Re-Mixed

W

alter Robinson is a man whose classifications contradict one another in an amusing way.

Robinson is an artist. He’s been recognized for his diverse works such as romanticizing steamy pulp art and an examination of American pop culture. Robinson is also an esteemed art critic who’s been labeled as a trailblazer in the world of art critique. I can only presume there’s a certain benefit and clarity to not only being the creator, but also the reviewer. Yet, Robinson’s art is arguably his most noteworthy and influential undertaking.

Moore College of Art & Design is known for showcasing a number of galleries dedicated to some of the best artists of the past and present. This time, it’s Robinson’s turn. The current display, Walter Robinson: Paintings and Other Indulgences, features the New York native’s work since his artistic inception in 1979, to his culmination in 2014. The 80 paintings on display range from early works of pulp novel romance paintings to erotic still-lifes. The majority of his work was dedicated to pop culture and its more distasteful cousin, trash culture. Robinson’s art has always reflected sex, gluttony, desire and the overall cultural zeitgeist of society; things that are meant to be consumed and then discarded. According to Robinson, these subjects are major characteristics of ‘lowbrow’ pop culture. He’s always utilized pop art as a means of exploring these topics through a special view.

“Picture Perfect Kill, 2012,” an acrylic on canvas, is an example of Robinson’s affinity for pulp romance, but also a

model of consumption. The canvas piece tells a story with its vivid colors and striking imagery. Boldly romantic, the painting depicts a sultry woman seductively spread upon a bed as a man sits opposite her. It’s easy to surmise she’s the pulp fiction femme fatale; a golden haired siren of temptation and sin. He’s the guy who’s under her spell. Sex is a topic that’s ripe with desire and excess. It can be filthy, ephemeral and lowbrow, and of course, in our culture, effortlessly consumed.

Robinson explores the concept of gluttony in various facets of his art. In doing so, he also captures the spirit of the age with his pieces that critique modern consumerism. Fast food is a prominent feature of this ridicule. Society’s hunger for convenience food is indomitable. Pieces such as “Turkey Cheeseburger, 2012,” and “Impression: Cheeseburger, 2012,” are simple, yet telling works that color the craving we have for food. Again, those familiar themes of over-consumption and thought-less waste emerge with as much ease as greasy fries from a drive-through window.

Pop culture can be ugly. It’s ripe with hedonism, lust and other seedy features.

In today’s world, there’s an unrefined quality to it all. Robinson’s work is meant to shine a light on the more vulgar side of pop culture, especially the parts we’ve become numb to. n

y new girlfriend blurted out that she had a cuckolding past with her ex-husband. She says her ex badgered her into arranging “dates” with strangers and that he picked the guys. Her ex would then watch her having sex with a guy in a hotel room. The ex only watched and didn’t take part. I am really bothered by her past. She says she did it only because her ex pressured her into it and she wanted to save her marriage. But I suspect she may have enjoyed it and may have been testing me to see if I wanted to be a cuck. What should I do? —Confused In NOVA You suspect she may have enjoyed fucking those other men?

I hope she enjoyed fucking those other men—and you should too, CINOVA. Because even if cuckolding wasn’t her fantasy, even if she fucked those other men only to delight her shitty ex-husband, anyone who cares about this woman—and you do care about her, right?—should hope the experiences she had with those other men weren’t overwhelmingly negative, completely traumatizing, or utterly joyless.

And, yes, people will sometimes broach the subject of their own sexual interests/ fantasies using the passive voice or a negative frame because they’re afraid of rejection or they want an easy out or both. (“My ex was into this kinda extreme thing, and I did it because I felt I had to.” “That’s gross.” “Yeah, I totally hated it.”) But cuckolding is almost always the husband’s fantasy so odds are good that your girlfriend is telling you the truth about those other men being her ex-husband’s idea/fantasy and not hers.

As for whether she’s testing you: That’s a pretty easy test to fail, CINOVA. Open your mouth and say, “Cuckolding isn’t something I would ever want to do. The thought of you with another man isn’t a turn-on for me. Not at all.” It’s an easy F. What should you do? If you can’t let this go, if you can’t get over the sex your girlfriend had with her ex-husband and those other men, if you can’t take “I’m not interested in cuckolding you!” for an answer—if you can’t do all of that—then do your girlfriend a favor and break up with her. She just got out from under a shitty husband who pressured her into “cheating.” The last thing she needs now is a shitty boyfriend who shames her for “cheating.”

We’ve been together 16 years. We love each other very much, so this isn’t a deal breaker. I’ve got a thing for his long black hair. He’s a drop-dead gorgeous man, and while I gave up asking that he wear leggings or a breechcloth once in a while, I wish he

Dude, where’s my car?

My van was stolen a year and a half ago in Philadelphia. It was recovered 4 days later across the river in Camden, NJ. I was not informed until 2 weeks ago. That’s a year and a half after it was recovered. That is unacceptable. The impound lot wants $13,571 for storage fees or else it will be auctioned off next week. I bought the van for $1,500. Both the PPD and Camden Police refuse to take responsibly. At this point they won’t even allow me to go to the van and get anything that might be left in it.
