Your Love/Hate rants come to life
F
ebruary in the City of Brotherly Love can mean only one thing: Love is in the air. And where loves goes, hate can’t be far behind. No need to look any further than the I Love You/ I Hate You column that ran for years in Philadelphia City Paper to see locals’ passions and pissed off moments play out in public form. For years now, the ILUIHU stories, from bitter romantic betrayals to dick moves by cabbies, have been brought to life on stage by Azuka Theatre, which calls it the “anti-Valentine’s Day Valentine to the scrappy city of Philadelphia.” First started at Azuka by Allison Heishman in 2008, I Love You / I Hate You has become a creative, entertaining blend of comedy and candid insights. “There’s lots of screaming. In a good way,” says Heishman. “People always scream when they really identify with a post, then it turns to laughter. Lots of laughing/crying, crying through tears. You know that kind of laughter where you can’t breathe? That happens a lot.” Even if you think you know ILUIHU, be prepared for the Azuka team to take it to another level. “The astounding—sometimes brutal, hilarious and heart wrenching-words that someone wrote in earnest provide a baseline score from which we riff,” explains Wendy Staton, an actress who performs with Azuka. “I feel like I am a part of a jazz session with members of my commu-
nity all supporting and rooting for each other. And that is exhilarating. Then looking into the audience during the show, they are all on board for this wild ride.” Whether it’s a first date, a last date, blind date, pick-up or group of platonic pals, ILUIHU always attracts a diverse crowd, mostly just looking for a good time. “This is a quintessentially Philly column, I know people that get together every week and read the I Love You, I Hate You column out loud. That’s where the whole idea came from. This is an event that is by Philly for Philly, and that couldn’t be more Azuka. This is the perfect night out for whatever you’re looking for - because regardless you will have a blast,” adds Heishman. And it might even hold a silver lining for finding love amongst the hate. “Having read through ALL the I Love You, I Hate You posts for the last nine years I feel REALLY comfortable saying there’s someone out there for everyone. So don’t lose hope weirdos” —MICHAEL BUTLER

Giannina Rose, Tattoo Artist/Illustrator, Ceremony Tattoo Society, Kensington “Right now there are not many artists doing neo traditional work in Philadelphia. Specifically, with an Art Deco feel rather than nouveau. I LOVE Art Deco. Neo traditional to me is a more refined or elegant Tattoo Art form that came out of traditional tattoo styles. It allows a lot more creativity in concepts and composition but also stays with traditional values like a limited palette and bold black line work. I really love this style as it is basically the best of both worlds in Art, which is highly subjective and tattoo, which is in a technical way not subjective. A bad tattoo is a bad tattoo. Bad Art is just an opinion.” How long have you been a tattoo artist? I did a Traditional apprenticeship in 2003, So with a few breaks here and there to travel the country and be a vagabond freight train rider, I haven’t ever really done anything else. So what, like 13 years? Whoa. What have been some of your favorite tattoos to create? ALL of them! Seriously. I wouldn’t be here without every single client I am beyond lucky to have worked with. Some of these images are my recent work.
Andrew Drumm, Tattoo Artist, Northern Liberty Tattoo, Northern Liberties “I mix illustrative with portrait black and grey art together. Being that most artist in the city do traditional I stand out in the fact that I do portrait style work.” How long have you been a tattoo artist? Nine years. What have been some of your favorite tattoos to create? I enjoy doing large custom Asian or large custom portrait pieces. What design are you kind of sick of doing? ’90s tribal bands. Leave that in the ’90s. (laughs) Advice you wish more people would take about body art? Trust your artist and listen to his/her advice. What are your plans for new ink yourself this year? I want to get something for my daughter and dog. What’s a new trend in tattooing that you are really getting behind? I love the innovation of tattoo machines. The new rotary and pen designs are killing. What’s your advice for deciding on the best tattoo to get? If you have no hesitation, then that’s the one. What’s the best starter spot on the body for a first tattoo? The least painful place in my opinion would be the upper arm or shoulder.
Jasmine T Morrell, Owner, Spirited Tattooing Coalition, West Philly “I combine a few techniques and elements of tattooing into lush yet simple illustrative designs done in black ink.” How long have you been a tattoo artist? 11 years What have been some of your favorite tattoos to create? Anything where there’s a vision or idea from the client that they then give me full license to carry out. That in my opinion is when both parties end up the happiest and are my favorites. What design are you kind of sick of doing?/seeing around town? Hey you know whatever floats your boat or makes you happy, I can’t step all over. I’m not out to yuck anyone’s yum. However, American “tribal” tattoos should be officially laid to rest once and for all. What’s a bit of advice you wish more people would take about body art? Remember that forever is a long ass time. What are your plans for new ink yourself this year? I would love to start mapping out my full back piece and hopefully travel overseas a couple times to get worked on. What’s a new trend in tattooing that you are really getting behind? That there’s so many ways to do one thing, and
10 | Philly Weekly | February 11 -17, 2016 | phillyweekly.com
What design are your kind of sick of doing, or sick of seeing on people around town? I don’t think I would get sick of seeing any tattoos. Especially on other people! It’s such a personal thing to wear a tattoo. There are definitely trends and fads, but as I am a victim of the 90’s tribal wave, I can’t judge much. The only thing I wish I would stop seeing are overly tiny tattoos as they age out.
What’s a bit of advice you wish more people would take about body art? I would really only advise the general public that when it comes to permanent body art, do your research. Tattoos are a highly specialized and skilled art form. A bad tattoo is nothing but regret. There are no refunds, no returns. My studio has a lot of incredible artists and a lot of guests you would normally not have access to. We host a lot of international artists as well. There will always be quick and cheap spots for flash tattoos or small walk ups, and these street shops are rad for that experience. But if you’re looking for larger high quality work, in this day
and age, do your due diligence and check out all tattooers in your area. I have a lot of clients who travel far or even fly in to see me. I think that is incredibly humbling but also very common these days in the Tattoo Collecting world. We run a studio in the middle of nowhere that survives off the incredible work clients go through to find great work on the web. What are your plans for new ink yourself this year? I am actually currently in the progress of Blacking out my lower arms. But there is a technique that I think is beautiful that’s been around for awhile in Europe done in shops by our friends at Divine Canvas in London and Sang Bleu in London. You black out sections, and then there is a wait time and you can go over it with white pigment in geometric or organic lines. Haunting and beautiful. So my lower arms are almost completely black or grey. What’s a new
trend in tattooing that you are really getting behind? I’m really really into a lot of the pattern
work I am seeing black Ink workers doing. I think it looks beautiful. I also love animal and mineral focused tattoos. Occult imagery and Ornamental.
everyone has their spin on a style. I’m a fan of really crude and simple designs being on the forefront. I think it’s brave and cool to take those first steps of putting yourself out there with weirdo art. What’s your advice for deciding on the best tattoo to get? If the thing you’re looking to get done is done well by the tattooer you’re considering, and that they’re an actual decent person who you feel comfortable getting tattooed by. It’s not all about capability, bedside manner is important. You can run the risk of having an amazing tattoo and a really terrible experience.
What’s the best starter spot on the body for a first tattoo? Arms and legs hurt the least, so that’s a good go-to. You’ve gotten a bunch of attention upon opening for being an LGBTQ tattoo shop. How have things been going thus far for your business? Do you feel like you are filling a real need within the community? Things have been great! We stay pretty busy and we get a ton of good people coming through the door that are so happy that we exist and are a group of talented individuals. One thing I will note though is that we are not an LGBTQ shop, we are LGBTQ owned—every one that works here is their own person, and some don’t identify with that necessarily, but are all awesome artists who get the overall message the shop is set out to send.

FEATURE
Inking the Walls M
ichael Schulson recently debuted Double Knot adjacent to his perennial Sampan. To grace the interior of the restaurant’s lower floor, Schulson worked with Mike Ski of True Hand Society, a tattoo and design studio in Fishtown. We caught up with both Schulson and Ski to find out more about how this unique inkinspired collaboration formed.
How did you decide you wanted a mural that was inspired by body art for Double Knot? Michael Schulson: During the concept design phase, I was inspired by Japanese nautical folklore and the ancient art of scrimshaw. Through my travels while working in Japan, I found the art of scrimshaw fascinating. Bringing this to the attention of Kate Rohrer, ROHE Creative (designer), together we felt there were strong parallels between tattoo art and scrimshaw. We looked to local tattoo artisans to create something specifically unique for Double Knot.
Which came first, working with True Hand or wanting the mural? The art feature / mural idea came first, True Hand Society had the right aesthetic and passion to make it a reality.
What murals specifically did True Hand create for the walls? Two large "scrimshaw inspired" murals in the basement dining rooms; Ghost Whale (the larger mural) and Robe of Feathers (the smaller round one) . They offset these more masculine art features with soft, pink Japanese maple leaves in the VIP booth.
What is special about this mural in terms of the team that created it....and its symbolism? Both murals were inspired by folklore. It was a way to incorporate a Japanese design element to compliment the menu, without being cliché. Each mural was inspired by a different folklore tale: Ghost Whale + The Robe of Feathers. True Hand Society researched the folklore tales and came up with original and inspired drawings to represent their meaning.
What do you hope this wall art will inspire for diners, what vibe were you going for? We wanted to create something that was a bit mysterious and open for interpretation. Thus leaving something for the guests exploration/ imagination. The titles of each folklore legend are purposely noted on the murals should guests be so inclined to find out more. n 12 | Philly Weekly | February 11 -17, 2016 | phillyweekly.com
How did you partner with Michael Schulson for this project, who first reached out to whom? Mike Ski / True Hand: We were approached by a good friend and talented colleague Kate Rohrer from Rohe Creative. She designs amazing interiors with an aesthetic that we are really akin to and works closely with Michael. She introduced us and we were excited to be contributors to such a beautiful and interesting space and concept. As both a tattoo and design studio, this project was a really cool opportunity for us at True Hand to combine our talents and interests in a unique application.
Describe your tattoo style for us. I’ve always been drawn to tattoos that are bold, clean, and have a lot of contrast. I’d refer to my style as Traditional American with a strength in overall composition. I’m also interested in placement and helping make tattoos that work with their surroundings. More-so, I am interested in meeting cool people and making rad tattoos in various styles for them. As a studio, True Hand has a like-minded aesthetic with our own individual aspects rooted in the agreement of what makes a great tattoo and a positive tattoo experience for our clients.
How was it different working on a mural than on flesh? What challenges did this present? The main difference in this instance is scale, which although it may sound obvious… is something to keep in mind when you’re thinking of a tattoo idea. A good tattoo should be readable at the scale you have in mind. In this instance, it’s a relatively simple design for how large it is and hopefully it was successful in being appreciated from across the room. It’s fun and exciting to be challenged to work in ways which can be informed by tattooing and vice-versa to continue to learn and improve as an overall artist.
Do you think you'll do more mural or non-tattoo work? Hell-to-the-Yeah. At True Hand, we are a by-Appointment Tattoo studio with myself and the super talented Patrick Haney and Josh Hoffman. We are also a full-scale design squad with the talents of Jessie Jay and Julianna Lose. In addition to having an awesome time making fun tattoos, we do branding/logos systems and design for a number of awesome Makers, small businesses, and restaurants all over Philadelphia and beyond. It’s an ongoing adventure and we’ve found ourselves applying our passion for affecting the visual landscape of our surroundings in a ton of different ways. From applying temporary tattoos inspired by an exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art to hanging off scaffolding painting signage on a building, we’re always looking for cool opportunities to do what we love.
How does art translate from one canvas to the other? I’ve found that anything you learn in various mediums can inform and inspire one another if you pay attention. As a tattooer and designer, I’m always interested in progression and feel incredibly lucky to be in a studio where we are making art non-stop.
Tell us about the designs you created for the walls, how did they come about? The first step in designing the walls in Double Knot was to find a narrative. I researched a ton of Fisherman and Mariner folklore and found some really interesting and fun stories. I included the names of the ones we ultimately went with in the artwork so people might be curious and look into it further while enjoying a dinner and conversation with friends. I could tell you all about it here, but wouldn’t it be more fun to see it yourself over a delicious dinner and get your google on? See you there. n

Ex’s & Oh’s for VDay Love advice from Ex-Files StorySlam host Robin Gelfenbien.
T
he wildly popular “anti-Valentine’s Day” StorySlam, The ExFiles, returns to Philly this VDay weekend to provide the perfect antidote to that nasty case of social media romantic FOMO you may have contracted. Host Robin Gelfenbien dished some Valentine’s Day dirt with us recently in preparation for the storytellin’ shindig.
What’s your advice for surviving Valentine’s Day if you’re in a crappy relationship? Depending on how long you’ve been dating, I’d let the other person know a few weeks out that Valentine’s Day isn’t your thing. You consider it a Hallmark holiday, and you’re going to go out and cheer up your single friends. That way nobody gets hurt. That is, of course, until you break up with your significant other on February 15.
What’s the most annoying love song you can think of? Even though it’s about someone who’s dead, I can’t stand Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On.”
What are your feelings on the giganto Vermont teddy Bear that’s all over tV commercials lately? How would you react to receiving one? I’m sorry it took me so long to respond. I was busy vomiting after seeing that commercial for the first time. If a guy I was dating gave me one, I might have to break up with him on the spot: 1. any great ex tales of your own? I’ll be telling a fun story about an ex at the show, but here’s a good one. About seven years ago I was getting out of the shower, and I smacked my foot against the side of the tub. I screamed in pain, but my boyfriend at the time said nothing nor did he get up off the couch to see if I was okay. (I live in NYC. The distance between my couch and my bathtub is about eight steps.) I had a feeling I had broken my toe because it hurt so much and told him that. He thought I was overreacting and didn’t seem to care. Turns out, I had broken my toe. I stayed with him. When he met my mom for the first time, I asked him later what he thought of her since he hadn’t said anything. He said, “Hard to tell. She was probably just being nice.” Then, one time when we went shopping, he said, “You don’t look good in purple” (my favorite color). I thought, “That’s funny cuz you don’t look good in my life.” I broke up with him a week later. n

LIFE SUCKS IN A STRAPLESS BRA
by Kate Concannon
For People Too Awesome For Valentine’s Day
“V
alentine’s Day.” the woman in all black groaned in sheer disgust. This is a “holiday” that should only be celebrated while you’re in elementary school. What’s the worst that could happen? Your class crush gives you a “Cowabunga” Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles valentine instead of the “I like you, be my valentine” in the TTMN heart bubble one you wanted? Cool, you still get to go home with a shit ton of candy and your parents will probably buy you pizza and you’ll get to go to bed early. Glorious. You’re a chump if you celebrate Valentine’s Day as an adult. Oh yeah, I’m shaming you. One day to show your love? Why don’t you buy me a heart donut on a random Tuesday in July and we’ll talk real love, okay? So as a single gal who isn’t scared of no Valentine’s Day, here’s some advice on how to not only survive, but thrive during this 24-hour haze of pink and red.
DO
Burn all technological devices. BURN THEM. February 14 should be National Disconnect Day. Every idiot spends the day throwing filters on how awesome their significant other is compared to everyone else’s. It’s gross. You will want to look. But stop. S that D … shut it down. Read a book. Meditate. You’ll thank me and so will your feelings.
DON’T
Attend Galentine’s Day. Yay, girl power. We love each other. Brunch. Cocktails. Cheers. Carbs. Relationship talk? Oh no! Your boyfriend George Glass made surprise plans for you and you have to leave? And then you’re there with a great buzz and nothing to do with it. Listen if there isn’t an option of drunken spoon14 | Philly Weekly | February 11 -17, 2016 | phillyweekly.com
ing and laughing in a big bed with your girlfriends at the end of the night, I want nothing to do with it.
DO
TREAT YO SELF. You want to rent a hotel room strictly to take a luxurious bubble bath because your tub at home skeeves you out? You know what I have to say to that? TREAT YO SELF.
DON’T
Get drunk by yourself. Never ends well. You’ll end up singing Alanis Morrissette into a hair brush whilst accidentally clicking “follow” on your ex’s new girlfriend’s Instagram page (we’ve all been there), and hating yourself. Stop.
DO
Binge watch Netflix. It’s the best significant other out there. You can stuff your face with carbs and chocolate, shotgunning Diet Coke, and Netflix doesn’t care. Better than some rando you swiped right on the Tinder, am I right?
DON’T
Forget that this holiday is complete and utter rubbish. You are loved. I love you. In fact email me and I’ll tell you how much I love you, LifeSucksInAStraplessBra@ gmail.com And if none of that works, schedule a root canal and knock yourself the eff out and wake up on February 15 a new soul. So in the words of the Goddess among women, Liz Lemon, Happy Anna Howard Shaw Day, kids. n Kate Concannon is the Editor-In-Chief of Life Sucks In A Strapless Bra. She’s a self described red nail polish enthusiast, social media whore, closeted art geek and worshipper of her black wardrobe.

aybe it was the cold outside that night. I’m sure most of it was the nature of the food itself. Whatever the reason, a recent dinner at Neuf was a uniquely comforting experience, the plummeting temperatures and winds whipping along Ninth Street set in stark opposition to what was happening at my table inside the simply decorated, warmly lit space that Chef Joncarl Lachman moved into several months ago. After two and a half years at Noord Eetcafe, his runaway success that turned on an entire swath of the Philly population to the unexpected glories of Northern European cuisine, he has set his sights further south with Neuf—to Tunisia and North Africa, a six-hour flight and a world away. Indeed, the distance between gravlax and bitterballen pork meatballs to tagines and ras el hanout may as well be a light year, but Lachman and his team have managed the pivot with grace and a sense of fun. Shakshouka, which I first enjoyed for breakfast in Israel years ago, more than justified its move here to dinner with its hint of smoke anchoring the well-developed and grill-cooked tomato sauce. Tender, softly gamy quail was stuffed with onions, dates, preserved lemon, and the tension between the sweetness and earth demanded attention, especially when scooped up with a forkful of harira, a roasted vegetable and chickpea broth aromatic with a custom-blended ras el hanout. Grilled swordfish, like the quail, made smart use of sweetness, in this case the more sugary sense of it provided by raisins. It never overwhelmed the dish, however, as flageolets and pulverized pistachios swooped in right afterward and anchored the remarkably tender fish in a nuttier vein—they also thickened up the sauce. Berbere-spiced tagine was all pleasure, and the deeply rewarding lamb shoulder as its focal point was tender enough to require no knife whatsoever. Not that everything was perfect— kusheri salad would have been more exciting with a wider range of textures than the macaroni, lentils and jasmine rice allowed, though the halloumi croutons were addictive. Bouillabaisse had a hard time shining alongside so much other remarkable depth on this menu. It brought pleasure, but lacked that spark of excitement that so much else here had. The rouille crowning it all was excellent—

Pop superstar Debbie Gibson heads to Harrah’s this week.
D
ebbie Gibson has packed a lot of experiences into the years since she dominated the burgeoning music video scene of the 80’s. From Broadway to Playboy, appearing in a Katy Perry video and a few Pride parades, the piano-playing one-time teeny bopper has definitely matured. She’s back, although she basically never left the entertainment stage. We chatted with her before her iHeart the 80’s concert comes to Harrah’s Chester this weekend with Rob Base and Pretty Poison. Catch me I’m falling.
Do you have any favorite songs from your 80’s days? Of mine, I never tire of performing the hits live like “Only in My Dreams” and “Foolish Beat.” Of other artists, anything by George Michael and Madonna… I was into mainstream pop and melodic rock. Last night, I sat at the piano and did an acoustic version of “You Give Love a Bad Name.” A great song can be interpreted many ways.
There’s something new in the works for “Foolish Beat,” but I don’t wanna say what yet, you’ll have to be surprised!

So hard to pick just one... The whole thing has been one big reward. But, I will say, there was a girl who was featured in my “We Could Be Together” video named Meghan. She had what doctors thought was terminal cancer and her Starlight Children’s Foundation wish was to be in my video. We reunited several years ago and it turns out doctors should never give out death sentences because she was alive and thriving and thanked me for the healing power of music. I thank God for that every day. Moments like that are amazing.
What is one style trend from the ’80s that you wish would come back? I still wear scrunchies, but they’re cool and metallic and updated. There’s still nothing that holds your hair better and doesn’t damage it and looks cute.

What’s your secret for staying and looking so fabulously young? Awwww shucks! I don’t know actually because I’ve gone through the most challenging time of my life the past few years. I’ve learned to reflect on the amazing adventures I’ve had in my life with gratitude and find joy in very simple things. I’ve been dealing with Lyme disease, which plagues so many people it’s unbelievable. My spirit wants to go go go, but sometimes my body won’t keep up. So the answer I guess is a good attitude and spirit keep me going and staying youthful despite adversity.
What should people look forward to from your show at Harrah’s? I have my repertoire of material, but I usually decide exactly what I’m doing close to showtime to suit my vibe and the mood of the crowd. Being that this is a celebration of the ’80s, expect the HITS baby! (Laughs). My boyfriend said the other night the reason people are still so connected to that era is because it was a time of freedom. It was before people’s privacy was being invaded. We could walk our loved ones to the gate at airports. And the music was unapologetically melodic, catchy, and FUN! n

Plus 2: Being Poly
I
f I asked you “what is your sexual orientation?” you’d probably answer a different question. You’d likely answer “are you the same gender as the people you prefer to have sex with?” Because identifying as lesbian, heterosexual, gay, etc., is merely describing whether it matters if your partners are the same gender as you. Our current, limited definition of sexual orientation doesn’t describe much about desires or behavior. It says little about which male or female people you find attractive, what you want to do with them, the value you put on emotional connection, or how you conduct sexual relationships. These are important facets of how we’re oriented- beyond the singular detail of whether our dates go by “he’ or “she.” For me, someone who identifies as bisexual, gender is the least of my concerns in potential partners. Age, personality, body composition, and even musical preferences are a better gauge of whether or not I’ll be into somebody than gender. But that’s literally the only thing you can infer about my sexuality from knowing I’m bi: that gender is not a deal breaker. You can’t assume anything else about whom I find attractive, what we’d do together naked, or how I conduct relationships. So summarizing my sexual orientation as “just” bisexual is wildly inadequate.
WHAT IS POLYAMORY? Polyamory, (in Greek and Latin alternately) meaning “many loves,” is a type of ethical non-monogamy: you can have multiple relationships simultaneously and everyone involved knows and consents to it. Not everyone who practices polyamory considers it to be an orientation, some folks just end up in complex situations or grow into the practice. But for some of us, being poly is as intrinsic as attraction to men or women. Lynne, a member of the Philly based group Polydelphia says “Poly was my relationship orientation before I was aware of it. When I was young, I assumed I was part of the defaults: straight, monogamous… As I aged and dug deeper into myself, I realized I was actually pansexual and polyamorous.” Another Polydelphia member, Kate, had just broken up with two boyfriends she’d been dating simultaneously when she found a passage in the book Polyamory: Another Lifestyle that resonated with her. “Suddenly, in a flash, nothing was wrong! Everything made sense. And it was so simple: I had been a polygamous woman all my life, trying to fit myself into a mold that neither fit me nor my perception of the times I was living in.”
COMING OUT AS POLY For those who are not heterosexual, the conflict between true and socially expected desire eventually reaches a head. When a man realizes that he’s attracted to men, for
instance, he must contemplate what he wants and how to identify. The pressure to be straight is much less than it used to be, so the process of coming out has gotten easier. The same is slowly becoming true for polyamorous people, though not without fits and stops. In 2013, an Australian woman working for a Catholic social services organization was fired for having too many sexual partners. Her bosses saw her name listed on the Brisbane Poly Group’s resource list for counselors and accused her of “gross misconduct” because her polyamorous lifestyle was in opposition to the church’s teachings. She sued her former employer not only for lack of procedural fairness but also because they were discriminating against her sexual orientation. The judge rejected this contention, arguing that polyamory is a behavior and not an orientation. Whether or not an employer should have a say in the consensual activities that happen off the clock, this does prompt a legitimate question:
IS POLYAMORY AN ORIENTATION? For some who say no, the issue is choice. They would argue that hetero or homosexuality is not something that can be changed, but one chooses how many partners they have. But I could choose to opt out entirely. Deciding to be celibate is not the same thing as asexuality. Behavior can reflect orientation, but is not the same thing. Besides, number of partners has more to do with what’s normal in a given culture. That’s why a Saudi man can have four wives and you, American, can have only one. In a culture that suggests no one can love more than one person at a time, it’s hard to say what people would do if given multiple options. Before it was safe to come out as gay, very few people did. But closeting doesn’t make someone any less attracted to the same sex. Is there a genetic basis for poly orientation? No one has specifically studied that. There is research on how hormones affect mating strategies, including interest in short-term versus long-term pairbonds. And evolutionary psychology indicates that romantic monogamy is a relatively new invention in human history. Perhaps the question is irrelevant: crushes develop from exposure as much as wiring. All desires are determined by genetic proclivity combined with lived experience. We decide how to act on them. One’s sexuality is not a single decision; rather: an endless succession of choices. We encourage certain attractions, bravely make moves, shy away from others, and prioritize responsibilities. We construct our lives brick by brick, hopefully aligning our reality with our actual interests. For the Australian woman’s case, as in the issue of marriage equality for same-sex

WHAT’S IT FEEL LIKE TO BE POLY? Olivia has been married for over ten years- she and her husband are now integrating secondary partners into their relationship. “For a long time, I thought poly was for people who were not into commitment. I now realize it’s for people who really enjoy and are nourished by it. I have the capacity for so much more love.” For me, it’s the acknowledgment that I can fully be into multiple people simultaneously and that sexual exclusivity is not required for a relationship to be vitally important. No one person can fulfill all of my needs and with poly, they aren’t expected to. I can experience each person for the awesome being that they are, instead of whittling away candidates until I find one person who best matches my requirements for a life partner and then spend the rest of my days wondering if I could have done better. It doesn’t mean I’m devoid of jealousy. Instead, jealousy, like physical pain, is a cue something needs to be fixed. If I feel jealous my partner is talking to someone, it doesn’t mean they should stop talking. It means I need to look at what fears or insecurities are being triggered and hash them out with my boo. Being poly means lots of communicating about feelings. Lots of communicating. Lots. Polyamorous people are also likely to encourage compersion (the opposite of jealousy: joy from seeing my partner experience pleasure from another). It doesn’t mean monogamous folks can’t experience that, they might just get less practice. The hardest parts of poly, in my experience, have been managing the logistics of multiple schedules and coming out to dates. I make my non-monogamous intentions known from the jump and, on occasion, that means I can’t be with someone I really like. Either of us could compromise to be together, but doing so would be a denunciation of who we are and what we really want, which is unsustainable.
POLYAMORY IS HAVING A MOMENT Mainstream media are covering it with gusto, some with a “lookee here” vantage, others contemplating what there might be to learn from a lifestyle so contingent on honest communication. I don’t consider it a trend so much as a game changer. One day we’ll look back on the emergence of poly the same way we looked at being gay in the 90s. The real question is what part of sexual orientation will be next. n
SAVAGE LOVE
by Dan Savage
G
ay male in my late 20s. I recently ended things with a guy. Our relationship started as a strictly sexual one. We’re both involved in the kink scene in our city and have interests that align in a particularly great way. Quickly it became clear there was a real connection. The next two months were great! I had a toothbrush at his place within three weeks. But early on, I noticed that he was a much more extroverted person than I was. He would laugh loudly at movies, work the room at parties, say things about kink in the middle of crowded restaurants. I prefer to blend in. Initially I thought of this as “the price of admission,” one I was willing to pay, but it soon became tiresome. I ended things, telling him that there were conflicts with our personalities. He fell for me—he’s stated it over and over—but I don’t want him to think he has to change who he is to be with me. I loved being in a relationship again, the sex is great, and finding someone who shares your kinks and you’re attracted to emotionally is rare. He’s asking me to reconsider. Was I right to end this? —Tired Of Being Single He shouldn’t have to change who he is to be with you, TOBS, but what if he wants to? It’s unlikely he’ll morph into an always-quietly-tittering, always-discreetly-kinking introvert, just as you’re unlikely to morph into a braying, oversharing extrovert. But if making an effort to dial it back is the price he has to pay to be with you, why not let him decide if he’s willing to pay? Gays represent a tiny percentage of the general population, and kinky gays represent a not-so-tiny-but-still-smallish percentage of the gay population. I don’t think you have to marry this man, regardless of his flaws, just because you’re gay and your kinks align. But you should think twice about discarding a guy who’s gay and kinky and whose company you enjoy just because he gets on your nerves now and then. At the very least, you owe it to yourself, just as you owe it to him, to be specific about the reasons you pulled the plug—because he might want to make an effort to win you back. There’s a lot that’s good here—your kinks align (rare!) and you enjoy spending some-butnot-all of your time together (common!)—and there are always work-arounds for the bad. An example from my own life: My husband is way more extroverted than I am. So sometimes he goes to movies, restaurants, clubs, and concerts without me. I stay home and read or sleep or clean. And then, when he gets home, we have something to talk about—how the movie was, whether the restaurant was any good, who was out at the clubs, and if there were any cute boys in the band. He doesn’t make me go out; I don’t make him stay home. It’s a work-around that works for us. With some effort, TOBS, you could find the work-arounds that work for you two: He makes an effort, when you nudge him, to dial it back; he goes to comedies with his friends, dramas with you; if he’s working a room, he won’t take offense if you slip into another room. Give it—give him—a chance. n
