Pretty Mbane: Fight the Violence This past week saw the premiere of InterAct Theatre Company’s The Dangerous House of Pretty Mbane, by playwright Jen Silverman, and it is a stunner—the story of a young South African soccer star and her activist lover, separated first by distance and then by the shadow of LGBT-targeted violence. One hugely important plot point in the story will be the subject of a pre-show public discussion at this Saturday’s performance: the phenomenon of “corrective rape.” What’s that, you ask, dreading the answer with an ominous lump in your gut? And you are right to do so, because the practice is every bit as heinous as it sounds; simply put, imagine lesbians being raped by males in their hometown—sometimes cops—who think they just need a good dick-fucking to be “cured” of their sexual orientation. In the play, Mbane, the soccer player’s lover, wants this kind of assault to be declared a hate crime, but she’s the David in this struggle, while a corrupt government is the Goliath. InterAct’s “Fight the Violence” discussion this weekend brings real-life activist Ndumie Funda to Philadelphia from Cape Town, where she heads Luleki Sizwe, a nonprofit organization that focuses on combating violence against LGBT individuals. More than 500 South African women report being victims of corrective rape annually; at least 31 lesbians have been murdered in the past decade. So a few years ago, Funda started a Change.org petition that received over 170,000 signatures, compelling the South African government to finally recognize the assault as a hate crime. On the Adrienne Theater stage Saturday, she’ll be joined by local activists who fight gender violence and offer support services right here in Philly. The discussion is free to those who preregister; it’s a remarkable opportunity to engage with one brave, strong fighter who’s giving a voice to a terrorized community in South Africa and worldwide. Like the unforgettable character in InterAct’s latest production, Funda’s causing a fuss over something that many folks in power would like to sweep under the rug and ignore. But we can’t. The scenario, tragically, isn’t a new one: Black male gets stopped by the police, officers feel threatened, and the man ends up dead via gunfire from their weapons. oads are one of those things most of us only think about consciously when they do something unpleasant to draw our attention. This week, there’s snow and ice and slush—so our movements through the streets take up a larger chunk of brainpower than usual. Alex Doty, though, looks at Philly traffic every day with as analytic an eye as possible. As executive director of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, Doty’s been working for more than a decade to prompt changes to the streets that help make the city more livable. He’s seen visible progress: When The New York Times recently ranked Philadelphia third in its “Top 52 Places to Go in 2015,” it specifically cited urban planning and bicycling among the reasons, noting that Philly’s planned bike-share program looks to make “this mostly flat city even more friendly for those on two wheels.” As the race for Philadelphia’s next mayor ramps up, Doty’s got a few suggestions about just how we can keep that momentum going.

you’ve said you want to see Philadelphia commit to a worldwide traffic initiative called “Vision Zero.” What’s that? Vision

That last bit doesn’t sound like it should be a controversial thing to say, but it is. Too many of our streets are designed in such a way that they basically don’t have features to indicate to people that the safe speed limit of 25 miles per hour should be followed. So people are kind of taking it upon themselves to go faster. [We want to say to drivers]: “For you to get to your restaurant reservation, you need to allow 10 or 15 more minutes—and by doing that, we are going to save 100 lives a year.”

costs of not fixing it are so profound. It’s certainly a tough nut to crack, there’s no question. But, to say about the most dangerous street in Philadelphia and arguably one of the most dangerous in the country, “Oh well, it’s going to be hard to fix—”

“—so let’s just not do it!” Right. That’s not a reason. When you look at New York City, they have been able to make profound changes on their streetscape without spending a whole lot of money on the traditional idea of infrastructure dollars. The thing that New York has that we do not have is a fully staffed traffic engineering department within their Department of Public Works. We do not have enough streets engineers working at the Streets Department in order to be able to take advantage of the opportunities that come along. If you talk to the traffic engineers, the streets commissioner, they see plenty of opportunities where they can make safety improvements. What they don’t have is the staffing to be able to implement conceptual ideas into the kind of blueprint a contractor needs in order to be able to actually make the changes.

Meanwhile, down at the citizen level, we seem to be experiencing a sustained cultural move toward bicycling the streets of Philadelphia being a thing that regular people do. I think we have a great advan-

tage in Philadelphia: We have a relatively flat landscape, and we have a lot of people who live close to where they work— within four or five miles. And the city is dense enough that, in general, for a trip that’s four or five miles or less, during the normal course of business during the day, the fastest way to get there is generally going to be on a bike. Public transit can be as fast—if it lines up perfectly for you. A car, particularly if you don’t have a parking space waiting for you wherever you’re going, is going to take longer. Driving at 2am can be a really convenient way to get around Philadelphia. Driving at 4pm is not.

an easy answer. The one thing that is clear is that there is no one—not the neighborhood, not the neighbors, not the Streets Department, not PennDOT, not the police department, not SEPTA—nobody thinks that street works. It’s broken. There isn’t an easy fix. There isn’t a cheap fix. But the

The bicycle Coalition is planning a mayoral candidates’ forum in March. Whoever the next mayor of Philadelphia turns out to be, what do you think that he or she could do that would be make the city even friendlier for bicyclists? One is that we

need to catch up with our American city peers—over 40 now—that have installed protected bike lanes. That’s both a symbol of Philadelphia as a bicycle-friendly city and also a very practical thing that attracts more people to bike. It’s a challenge because we have narrow streets. But there are 30 miles of streets we’ve identified that the next mayor could put protected bike lanes on. Among the first I would want to see would be Market and JFK. When you look at those streets, those are streets that belong in downtown Dallas. Those are not inviting streets to spend your time on. Would you rather walk on Walnut, Chestnut or Market? At rush hour, that [corridor] still isn’t at full capacity for all the lanes that are there. That’s not a positive thing: Too many lanes leads to all kinds of problems, including speeding and crashes, as well as the fact that the street feels empty.

What do you say to the animosity on all sides between bicyclists, drivers and pedestrians? My experience has generally been that bicyclists are annoyed at drivers because drivers have been aggressive or rude. What I say to bicyclists is: “Don’t take it personally. Have you seen how drivers treat each other?” This is what I tell myself: I’ve made a choice to be on the bike because it’s the best place for me to be. So I just need to find the part of it that I enjoy… and try and have some sympathy.

That sounds like a prescription for pretty much all human interactions. The interaction that I worry much more about is the bike-pedestrian interaction and the fact that we have too many bicyclists being unsafe toward pedestrians and riding on sidewalks. I sympathize with the person who’s scared of the street and who is riding on the sidewalk in a very slow manner. But the person who is going at speed and dodging around pedestrians—that person needs to fear enforcement. I wish that they were getting tickets in the same way that I wish car drivers who were being unsafe and fast and running red lights would also have more fear of getting a ticket. There are jerks operating every type of vehicle, even shoes. I really resist the notion that somehow an entire group should be held accountable for the misbehavior of some small segment. If somebody says to me, “Bicyclists shouldn’t get their own bike lanes until all bicyclists are behaving,” I feel like saying, “Well, we should shut down I-95 until all car drivers are behaving.” Hey, it’s Philadelphia; we’re never going to be waving and handing roses to each other at intersections. But I think we can get to the point where, on the roadway, we have at least the same kinds of respect that we have on the sidewalk. n

Zero is that the city buys into the idea that we should be working toward having no traffic deaths in the city of Philadelphia. That no person should be killed by a motor vehicle: occupants of motor vehicles should not be dying, and pedestrians, users of public transit, and bicyclists should not be dying from traffic deaths. This is something we do not see as a “bicycle” issue—it is something that is important to everybody that lives in the city of Philadelphia. We should make changes to our streets so that we are all safer, and we should no longer be prioritizing speed or convenience over safety.

That’s sort of the trade-off we’re trying to make possible. So much of what’s happening is about the most aggressive people—the cardriver equivalent of standing in the grocery line and not just cutting in line, but actually trying to push from the back and shove everybody out of the way so that they can get to the front! This is behavior that in a face-to-face interaction, someone would not engage in. We’d all be saying, “What is going on? This is not acceptable!” But when you’re behind of the wheel of a car, suddenly the anonymity allows people—perfectly nice people—to engage in thoughtless and dangerous behavior. I love what happened on Spruce and Pine streets after we got a bike lane put in. The street had two travel lanes, but the traffic volume never really justified two lanes—so what that meant was that the most aggressive drivers were driving too fast and switching lanes all the time. Eighty-five percent of drivers were braking to accommodate the top most aggressive 15 percent. So when it went down to one travel lane, there was no significant change in the average travel time for a motorist. The most aggressive drivers got slowed down—but the average travel time for everybody stayed basically the same. The ultimate thing on Spruce and Pine is not that bicyclists got space on there; it’s that motor vehicle crashes are down 26 percent in the time since the bike lanes were put in. The bike lane is great as a facility for bicyclists, but it turns out that its biggest benefit has been to keep motorists out of the hospital. That’s the kind of winwin that we want to find with Vision Zero. Another example that we’re looking at is Chestnut Street in West Philadelphia: There’s a street that is essentially a highway of sorts going through a residential neighborhood. Reducing those travel lanes is going to increase safety and not have a significant impact on travel times.

Mommy (Director/Writer: Xavier Dolan) Occasionally, a

movie stumps you. Not poorly-made—those are often easier to pin down—or a film you love beyond reason and have to convince others about; at least with those, you know how you feel. No, sometimes you get Mommy, in which skill and sentiment sit at odds, so two and a half hours later, you’re at the end of Mommy wondering what you think. The cast is unquestionably talented: Anne Dorval is magnetic as Die, the slightly-declasse single mother navigating her volatile son Steve, and Suzanne Clément delivers an understated but grounding performance as their neighbor Kyla, drawn into their orbit by the sheer energy of their intense mother-son dynamic. And while the dynamic’s successful, and Antoine-Olivier Pilon’s quieter moments can be dynamite, his performance feels directed toward caricature one tick too many, and that’s where the story sometimes wavers. It’s not their believability; many of us have known similar sorts. But Mommy shortchanges him on potentially thoughtful moments, substituting an occasional dance-along or montage as a bridge between violent outbursts and hoping it makes a character. It doesn’t quite. Style, too, Mommy has in abundance. Much of that languorous runtime is scenes of long afternoons or wretched dates playing out in all their dread or their awkwardness, cramped into a 1:1 aspect ratio that breathes in widescreen for rare moments. But the mixtape sincerity of the soundtrack overwhelms as much as it underscores, as if trying to reassure us of Steve’s good heart. A little more of that, and a little less of the inevitable, might have made for a smoother connection between style and substance. But even with its disconnects, Mommy is an ambitious film about the dark side of family, and it wants to connect. Perhaps it even might. | G.V.

Black Sea (Director: Kevin Macdonald / Writer: Dennis Kelly) There’s an immediacy to a submarine movie like nothing else. It hits so many inherent tensions—close quarters, no escape, the sea threatening to down you any moment—that all you need is to throw a handful of people into one and give them something to race after, and the stakes are built-in. And director Kevin Macdonald gives you all of them in Black Sea. The frame story feels earnest, if unnecessary: Screenwriter Dennis Kelly keeps an insistent grumble of class warfare running just below the groan of U-boat engines. But even the crew’s much-marketed tipping point—how everyone’s share of the gold they’re after will increase the fewer of them make it home—takes a backseat to the sheer danger of being in a submarine at all. The camera squeezes through machinery or races through narrow halls, and despite the majority of the joint UK/Russia crew being seasoned sailors, Macdonald constructs long moments of silent dread, with everyone looking around them wondering just what the sea will do. Jude Law (intense, if not assisted much by his adopted accent) headlines as a captain whose recklessness threatens the mission even more than the crew threaten each other. But amid the generalized vicious squabbling, a handful of the ensemble—Konstantin Khabenskiy, Michael Smiley, Scoot McNairy, Grigoriy Dobrygin—manage to carve out personalities. The third act feels either messy or waterlogged, depending on how many nautical puns you want to risk, but those performances propel even sluggish moments, and Macdonald knows to let them, just as he occasionally moves from tense faceoffs to the navigation, their journey a tiny dot on a vast sea. Those small, careful flourishes are welcome, and they help Black Sea carve a solid place in the genre. | G.V.

here are several grueling scenes in this week’s new release, the ambitious but sometimes difficult Oscar nominee Mommy. It’s one of those films in which you know the worst is inevitable. By around the halfway point, even the characters are beginning to suspect events have conspired against them in a way there’s no escaping. And shortly after Steve’s mother receives devastating news, in an attempt to apologize to his mother and reaffirm that he’s on her side, Steve kisses her. It’s a romantic kiss, though brief—a kiss that neatly crosses the line from the Oedipal domesticity we’ve seen so far. The audience around me had flinched, murmured or fidgeted when Steve raged, when his mother made blue jokes and when he caressed her during an impromptu dance session in a way that seemed beyond the filial. But they were stone silent during that kiss, aware that all the over-the-top violence and emotional outbursts that had preceded this moment were also bound to follow after. It’s meant to be transgressive, but it’s also meant to be meaningful. Not long after, I sat in the audience for high-polish B-movie The Boy Next Door, one of those films in which you know the worst is inevitable. It’s a direct throwback to the “sexy” thrillers of yore, in which we’re aware a single transgression means we’re in line for over-the-top violence and emotional outbursts. It’s something of an update, in that our adulterous lead is a woman, Claire, and the young seducer is Noah, a strapping 19-year-old neighbor who looks comfortably 25. Since minor-key music seems to follow wherever he goes, his intentions are no surprise. But when the moment came and he leaned in for the kiss, the audience laughed. Every time she came home and the camera panned across her family to find Noah sitting behind a potted plant or tucked into the corner of a sofa, he was greeted with peals of giggles. Even when he physically

intimidated Claire, anything short of overt violence got wolf whistles and chuckles. His punishment would come—it always does, in cheeseball thrillers. Until then, people felt free to enjoy. It’s interesting to note that Noah’s sexual intimidation of Claire is as coercive as all his later methods. Claire gives in after it’s clear Noah won’t accept her repeated “No,” which is a distinct shift from the cheesy “But we musn’t!” vibe of the trailers. It suggests a level of emotional manipulation and pathological need for attention that maps surprisingly neatly over Mommy’s Steve, whose disorder is labeled ADHD but seems inaccurate to some of the manifestations—particularly the sexually inappropriate ones. But Mommy is meant to be transgressive in a way that, ideally, touches the viewer emotionally and provokes thought about the relationships involved. Meanwhile, The Boy Next Door rests unabashedly in the protective nest of camp, in which transgression carries known consequences, and everyone’s in on the joke. The audience laughs at the first sun-kissed closeups of Noah’s biceps, even–maybe especially–knowing that later, he’ll attack Claire and try to kill her family, and possibly Claire herself. But that’s the point of the film, isn’t it? Camp removes the peril; camp makes it safe to laugh at what would otherwise be horrific. Claire is coerced into sex and is absolutely stalked, blackmailed, intimidated and attacked afterward. But the camp protects us from thinking about it. The camp makes it possible to laugh at the Oedipal references in a movie that later blinds its villain. But for camp to work, it has to be comfortable. To do otherwise—to have a son kiss his mother in the middle of a tightly psychological domestic tale, for instance—is to invite the viewer to question the story’s framework, which dissolves the camp and leaves only the unknowns. It’s safer, though just as strange, to check out The Boy Next Door. n

barbecue chef’s rub is a deeply personal thing, and the most devoted practitioners often spend years working to perfect their potion. Countless decisions of spice and sweetness and beyond have to be made, and if any of the ratios are off, the entire edifice falls apart. Imagine, then, how fraught with tension the endeavor must have been for this new spot on Main Street. Not only were expectations high in the lead up to the opening of this Manayunk paean to all things smoky and comforting, but it was named (with an extra B) after the very pixie dust that confounds so many: Rubb. My guess, however, is that Rubb will win over plenty of fans as word gets out about this simply decorated yet inviting spot an easy drive from the city. The rub itself is a uniquely sweet one, yet not overwhelmingly so, and it’s plenty complex. When applied to the generous ribs and allowed to meld with the meat over the course of its stint in the smoker, an almost molasses-like texture develops on top, sticking to the teeth in layers with each bite and providing the slightest sense of crystalline crunch. Bumping up against the smoky-earthy meat, the result is a mouthful that’s rich in sweetness and savor in equal measure, and a seriously fine serving of ribs. Brisket was very good too, if perhaps a hair too dry—though the cap of fat arcing across the top was pure ambrosia, melty and earthy-sweet. I recently visited on a quiet night in Manayunk, and the kitchen was kind enough to toss in a handful of burnt ends atop the brisket, an addition that deserves a star turn of its own: Each little nub was bouncy with partially rendered fat and flavorful enough to form a meal in its own right. Ham, a special, also succeeded, the pink meat vivid against the mahogany-toned glow of the space itself and as evocative as you may remember it from childhood. All of this is well-priced, especially in a city where good barbecue tends to be a bit on the expensive side. A platter of two meats and a side will run to $14—a good deal. Ribs aren’t included in that, but they can be purchased either by the individual rib ($2.50), the half rack ($13) or the whole rack ($25). No barbecue spot, however, can be judged a full success without solid sides and snacks, and Rubb acquits itself well there, too. Macaroni reposed in a molten

bath of cheese beneath its crispy crown, the entirety earthy and decadent. Dates are wrapped in house-smoked bacon, and those slices, deeply flavorful, crisp at the edges and perfectly moist at the center of their streaks of fat, lent the entirety a profundity the dish ordinarily lacks. The almost cake-like texture of the corn bread worked very well in the context of the jalapeño-cheddar hush puppies. There are, however, some items that could be improved. off-puttingly sweet, and an Old Fashioned was just perplexing: I don’t expect perfectly conceived and executed craft cocktails everywhere, but this one had little chance from the start. The snow-globe of cloyingly sweet, neon-red cherries muddled on the bottom were capped over by a slice of orange, which meant that the first several sips tasted of little more than bourbon. Once I wedged my straw beneath the orange slice and mixed up the cherries with the liquid, the whole thing became so sweet that it was difficult to finish. In a beverage program with so much detail paid to everything else, the shortcomings of this most classic cocktail were perplexing. But that’s an easy fix, and one that didn’t detract in any serious way from the many other pleasures of Rubb. The service is friendly and knowledgeable, the prices fair, and the barbecue very good. It all seems like a solid recipe for success—just like that rub itself. n

or several weeks, I’ve been bothering innocent young men about their appearance. I introduce myself as a sexologist and writer and ask if we can talk about what it’s like to be good-looking. Being conventionally attractive leads to all sorts of benefits, from career success to the chances a jury will convict you and access to a more exclusive dating pool. There are downsides to being really, really, ridiculously good-looking, though most of them overwhelmingly affect women. Females have been denied jobs and fired for being distractingly attractive. Pretty women face more harassment from strangers, social rejection from other females, and their talents and intelligence are often downplayed. Some women’s entire sense of self becomes precariously dependent on external validation, leading to depression, substance abuse and eating disorders. And that’s an area of research that we know a ton about. But there’s surprisingly little information on the subjective experience of being a man whom society considers visually appealing. So I bravely and selflessly conducted qualitative inquiries for the advancement of science by talking to a bunch of hot dudes. Of the dozens of participants approached: none refused, most described the experience as flattering and only a couple said they had ever talked to anyone about the subject before. Even the men whose incomes were based on their looks—professional models, actors, etc.— were sure to maintain an air of humility. For instance, when asked to describe their appearance, several replied with “average.” One, however, said: “I think I look like a lanky, exotic, androgynous/alienesque creature from the planet Fierce.” While the guys all put some effort into their looks, most seemed unworried about the impending effects of aging, though, and beyond exercise, few described having plans for maintaining their appearance later in life. “I think I’ll look solid when I go gray. I’ll absolutely be growing an epic beard. Old dudes with beards are great,” reported a man who admitted he never had to approach women, as they tended to come to him first. This was a fairly common experience: that potential partners often presented themselves unsolicited. As a result, many of the guys reported that even if they weren’t confident in their flirt game, their ideal mates were probably still attainable.

This is one of many perks they identified, along with: complimentary cab rides, booze, even flights, better treatment from servers, even job offers. “I think even in academia,” reported a professor, “people are friendlier, more engaging, more interested in you if they find you attractive.” According to the findings of pulchronomics (the study of the economics of beauty), a handsome man can expect to make 13 percent more than a less swoonworthy peer. Researchers have found that attractive people are more persuasive and more likely to be viewed as healthy, trustworthy and likable. “There is a narcissistic thrill in beauty,” said a bartender, “You have something that a lot of people can’t have, won’t have, even the rich.” So that sounds pretty damn sweet. But apparently it’s not all free champagne and booty. “People tend to project onto me. People seem to want to believe—need to believe, even—that beautiful men and women are dumb,” reported a man who also described enduring catcalls, as well creepy, stalking behavior and being followed home after work. This might be why so many of the men conveyed that they get along better with women: the shared experience of being inescapably objectified, as well as drawing jealous distain from others of the same sex. Even though I had approached them (indicating they meet the criteria), and despite the fact they all reported being described by others as “hot, sexy, handsome, cute” and even “head-turning,” most wanted to make it clear they were not vain. For some, this modesty stemmed from the relative newness of being seen this way. “I was gangly and awkward in high school,” noted one man whose current job is modeling in his underwear. A now-fitness instructor recalled, “I was an overweight but ‘pretty’ boy, sometimes mistaken for a girl.” Another man said the small town racism of his upbringing had insulated him from positive attention. It was only when he moved to the big city that anyone let him in on the secret that he was hot. Because of this, many recognize their current experience is both entirely relative and temporary. “I often think that nothing inspires more neurosis than beauty, except death, and that is a corollary. Beauty, especially youthful beauty, is a reminder of mortality,” noted one man, “Beauty is like life—it is transient. It is finite. We’re all decaying. I’m decaying, so it’s best not to hold on.” n
