FROM THE EDITOR
What a time to be alive KERITH GABRIEL
I
really didn’t know my father well. But I knew he was an Eagles fan. My proof is the picture I have of me at about 5 years old, dressed in a thick gray snowsuit from head to toe, so thick that my arms can’t touch my sides. I’m surrounded by slabs of concrete, dirty snow and a bunch of guys I don’t recognize, who appear to be screaming their heads off. According to my dad when I’ve asked about the picture, he tells me it was taken inside Veterans Stadium in 1987 in a game against the Buffalo Bills a few days after Christmas. The tickets were Christmas presents to him – and he took me. I don’t know if the Birds won or lost that game, I don’t remember if I was cold, but every time I look at that photo it tells me two things: My dad was an Eagles fan and he wanted me to be one too. I, like scores of people in the Greater Philadelphia Region, were born Eagles fans. And in that time, despite the ďŹ nal record or result, there was a badge that if you were born of this city, then this team was borne of you. From that moment in the snow and cold, I’d have to wait 17 long years to see the Eagles reach the NFL’s pinnacle game in a showdown with the NFL’s premier team in the Patriots. I still remember the ďŹ nal two minutes of that 24-21 loss like it was yesterday. I remember Brian Westbrook dropping a pass that hit him in the chest with 30 yards of running room in front of him. I remember the confusion in the room of why it was taking
3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20
so long to get plays off; questioning if both then coach Andy Reid and then quarterback Donovan McNabb forgot how the game of football was played in those minutes. I also remember my roommate saying nothing after the loss, simply rising from his seat, calmly walking over to his television and smashing it on the ground before retreating to his room, slamming the door. The Eagles are that serious. Flash forward 14 more seasons and I am now a father of my own with a son who I think will eventually love the Eagles just as much as his old man. He’s almost 2, but can sing portions of the Eagles ďŹ ght song, his green Eagles mini-football is without question one of his favorite toys and he can’t wait to wear his “Eagulls shertâ€? on game days. I didn’t do much, literally plopped him in front of the screen a few times on a Sunday and now he wants to watch right alongside me. As I mentioned before, we have yet to celebrate his second birthday and in two weeks he’ll watch the Eagles try to win their ďŹ rst Super Bowl in team history against the same team his dad nearly saw them win their ďŹ rst Super Bowl in team history against. I’ve waited more than 30 years for another Super Bowl Sunday, he’s waited less than two. On top of that, the newest addition to my family left the hospital and came home last Sunday, the day the Birds dominated the Vikings to win the NFC Championship, so she’ll be in the house as the Eagles go for it all in a few short days. Yeah, you can’t make this stuff up. But we’ll all be watching proudly and even though it won’t be in-stadium like my ďŹ rst experience, we’ll still take a picture so that maybe in 30 years or so, it’ll be the thing they’ll have to remember the moment, they too, became die-hard Eagles fans. #FlyEaglesFly. GOD BLESS Pittsburgh Ron.
“There are no worse fans in sports than Philly fans. I'm guessing many – not all – are subhuman. I wanted to laugh watching their ‘celebration’ Sunday night but I was too busy crying. What a joke they are. What an embarrassment. — Ron Cook, a sports columnist for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, posted this histrionic gem to Twitter after the Eagles’ victory. I’m not sure Ron saw the news that there were zero arrests during Sunday night’s rowdy celebrations in Philly, but either way, we’re gonna be the bigger fans here. Our subhuman thoughts and prayers are with your mentions, Ron. -$18$5<

The Pillaring A search team went out for this big guy in a Brian Dawkins jersey who was caught on camera getting pillared on a SEPTA platform. After the video went viral, Philly reporters tracked down 42-year-old Jigar Desai to talk about what compelled him to run down the SEPTA platform that night, as well as his viral fame. Moral of the story? “I probably watched it 500 times myself, Desai told the Philly Voice. “But when I saw that other angle, I thought, ‘Wow, this could’ve been really bad.’ I’m very fortunate and lucky to have made it to the game.

Live from South Philly Stop This shtick. It’s obnoxious. It’s all we’re known for, and it’s a punching stereotype that plays well nationally. But with victory goggles on, we guess it’s kind of cool that the FOX NFL Sunday talk show the horses, team included a Geno’s visit in their pregame coverage. assholes This jumo right here is the second – second! – jumo to get cuffed at the pregame tailgate for the most asshole crime imaginable. He punched a horse. OK, a police horse. A four-legged equestrian atop which sat a uniformed lawman. Granted, both horse-punching offenses happened before playoff games in which the Birds were victorious – but THERE’S ABSOLUTELY NO CORRELATION. Please stop punching the horses. Seriously.

The new DA’s softened rhetoric on the death penalty has worried some of his staunchest supporters.
Gone soft? Candidate Larry Krasner said ‘never’when it comes to seeking the death penalty. DA Krasner is less emphatic BY MAX MARIN
F
or decades, Larry Krasner’s position on seeking the death penalty has been deďŹ ned by one word: “Never.â€? As a candidate in last year’s Democratic primary for district attorney, the longtime civil rights lawyer averred he was “the only candidate running ... who explicitly pledges to never seek the death penalty.â€? His post-victory platform reasserted that “he will never pursue a death sentence in any case.â€? It was one of many unequivocal campaign promises that helped him clinch the primary and subsequent election. But since taking ofďŹ ce, Philly’s new DA has made more equivocal remarks on capital punishment that have worried – and angered – some of his staunchest supporters. The initial remark came at a media brieďŹ ng last week, where Krasner ďŹ elded questions about suddenly dismissing 31 attor-
-$18$5<
neys and other staffers as well as a urry of new hires and interim appointments. When the conversation turned to policy, Krasner outlined the DAO’s homicide sentencing committee, an appointed board that recommends sentences in many homicide cases. While the ďŹ nal decision rests with the DA himself, Krasner noted this committee’s yet-to-be-appointed members could push a death penalty recommendation in certain cases. “You never want to say never, but their decisions and my decisions are going to be informed by the fact that the death penalty is never imposed in Pennsylvania,â€? he said, referring to Gov. Tom Wolf’s moratorium on state execution. Some observers were startled by the shift in Krasner’s language. Others wanted more context. Asked for clariďŹ cation Wednesday, Krasner’s ofďŹ ce issued a similarly tempered response. “DA Larry Krasner has consistently stated that he personally opposes the death penalty,â€? DA spokesman Ben Waxman said in an email to Philly Weekly. “His statement about the committee’s procedures represents no change in his personal beliefs about the death penalty. Ultimately those beliefs will inform his exercise of discretion in accepting or rejecting the committee’s recommendation.â€? Pressed over whether “neverâ€? still means “neverâ€? with regard to seeking capital punishment as DA, Krasner’s ofďŹ ce declined further comment. Several of Krasner’s staunchest supporters who were briefed on these comments expressed concern over what they perceived as his notably softened rhetoric. Jondhi Harrell, founder of the Center for Returning Citizens and a member of the pro-Krasner Coalition for a Just DA, said he personally attended campaign events in which the longtime civil rights attorney spoke of nothing but “never.â€? “Is DA Krasner the same person as Candidate Krasner, or
will we begin to see a watering down, a dilution of the key components that caused community activists, returning citizens and a public hungry for social justice to overwhelmingly support his campaign?â€? Harrell queried in an email. “While staunch supporters wish to believe in the integrity of campaign promises, the reality comes with the day-to-day decisions of the ofďŹ ce.â€? Lorraine Haw, a member of the Coalition to Abolish Death by Incarceration, called it a “backtrack.â€? Haw’s brother was murdered in Philadelphia more than 25 years ago. Despite the fact Pennsylvania hasn’t executed an inmate since 1999, she is lobbying to have her brother’s killer removed from Death Row. “He’s got to realize the same way we got him up there, we can bring him down,â€? Haw said of Krasner. “He can’t sit here and sell us dreams, because we can get dreams for free.â€? Asa Khalif of Black Lives Matter in Pennsylvania, who campaigned heavily for Krasner, also took note of the shift in the DA’s tone. “Every politician, including Larry Krasner – especially Larry Krasner – must and will be held accountable to the campaign promises they ran on, and we can accept nothing less,â€? Khalif said Wednesday. After reviewing Krasner’s statements, the Coalition for a Just DA, which represents more than a dozen pro-Krasner groups, issued a statement calling on him “to take the death penalty completely off the table and issue clear policies that prohibit [the homicide sentencing committee] from making such recommendations.â€? Despite concerns, supporters still have high hopes for how Krasner will adjust to the political pressures of the ofďŹ ce. Many viewed his termination of long-tenured prosecutors and top unit brass as a campaign promise delivered. And in terms of carceral policy, Krasner has already helped negotiate parole for ju-
venile lifer Johnny Berry, who has spent the last 23 years behind bars, as the Inquirer ďŹ rst reported. “I have to give Krasner credit,â€? said Berry, upon hearing the prosecutor’s offer for reduced sentence. “He held true to his promise. He deďŹ nitely changed the culture of the ofďŹ ce.â€? But when it comes to the death penalty, outcry can strike prosecutors mightily from all sides. Last year, a legal battle erupted in Florida between Republican Gov. Rick Scott and State Attorney Aramis Ayala, who had long refused to seek capital convictions – even when unanimously recommended by a panel of assistant prosecutors. The case eventually went to the Florida Supreme Court, which ruled Ayala had to at least consider the death penalty in certain cases. She has since taken on her ďŹ rst capital case. Sources in the Philly DAO worry a similar scenario could unfold should a Republican succeed in ousting Wolf, who is up for reelection this year. State Sen. Scott Wagner, a populist Republican candidate from York County, has made pro-death penalty remarks on the campaign trail following the death sentence handed to Eric Frein, the Poconos man who shot and killed a State Police trooper last year. Under Wolf’s moratorium, the sentence remains purely symbolic. Wagner has vowed to immediately lift Wolf’s moratorium should he take the reins in Harrisburg. However Krasner handles these unforeseeable pressures, his believers say they’ll be watching. “On the day that the Krasner DA ofďŹ ce pursues a death penalty case, that promise is dead,â€? Harrell said. “What other principles may fall by the wayside under the weight of political opposition and reality? It is up to those who fought and struggled to elect him to hold him accountable to the principles and promises we believed in.â€? Q TWITTER: @MAXMMARIN

MUSIC I think everyone can relate to it. [Laughs.] You have so many different lives. You surround yourself with different people, different groups, different jobs, different friends. I can cut up my life by the bands I was in. When you’re in a band, you spend so much time with those people. It deďŹ nes you and where you’re going. It’s the same thing with boyfriends and places you’ve lived. But you get to a certain time in life and you look back and think, “Whoa, I’ve covered a lot of ground, not geographically, but in these different social circles.â€?
How do you navigate the workload between your primary band and your solo work?

Inara George brings her new solo album to The Boot & Saddle this weekend.
Future folk Ahead of her Philly show, Bird and the Bee songstress Inara George talks singles versus albums, musical monogamy, and two decades on the indie music scene BY MAX MARIN
Y
ou may know Inara George as one half of the beloved dreampop act the Bird and the Bee. But in her 20-plus years on the indie music scene, George has been doing what all serious professional musicians do: working out a solo sound – a sound she’ll be bringing back to Philly this week with her latest album, “Dearest Everybody.
-$18$5<
Those who are accustomed to seeing George perform in the guy-gal duo are in for a different performance at the Boot & Saddle on Friday, Jan. 26. George will take the stage with a four-piece, all-female act – all four members contributing to the layered vocal harmonies that deďŹ ne George’s latest work. Philly Weekly caught up with George to talk about the musical inuences behind the record as well as her storied career. —
“Dearest Everybody is your first solo album since 2009. You’re returning to form in a way, stepping back from the dreamy synth-pop of the Bird and the Bee and doing these weirder, folksier tracks. What was the motivation with this record? I don’t know if I was trying to do anything big. I just wrote some songs and wanted to present them in a simple way. But the vocal technique of the album – that layered all-female texture – was something I always wanted to do.
There’s some strikingly personal and nostalgic lyrics in these tracks. The album opens with “Young Adult to tell the story of losing your father as a young girl. Then, on “Slow Dance, you sing: “I’ve had so many lives it gets confusing / and when you come to my door it’s hard not to see how things could have been. For the latter, is there this kind of big-picture moment you’re getting to in your music now?
When I ďŹ rst started in the ‘90s, you had a band and you were in that band. People weren’t doing multiple things at once. I’ve been in two musical situations where it was exclusive. It was kind of like a romantic relationship. I’m a monogamous person when it comes to my husband [director Jake Kasdan], but I’m not a monogamous bandmate. I like to have a lot of things going on. I think it makes it more exciting. I get to wear all these different kinds of hats. Greg Kurstin and I do The Bird and the Bee when we have time for it. And we have a really special understanding. We’re working on different records at the same time. My solo stuff is just me. The Bird and the Bee has always been kind of a fantasy of who I want to be, and that changes from record to record.
You’ve been on the indie rock scene for 20 years now. What’s the most alarming change you’ve watched unfold in the music world? The most alarming thing to me – and I don’t know if it’s alarming, it just makes me sad – is that people don’t
listen to albums anymore. The idea of sitting with a whole record and listening to it from top to bottom, there’s thought and intent in that. But in some ways it’s come full circle, because singles are how music started.
There are still purists who really believe in the record. My kids – a 7-year-old and two 5-year-olds – are all about the single. They want to listen to the same song over and over. But that’s also the thing that’s most exciting now: the ability to put music out so fast and so efďŹ ciently. You get to reach people in different countries the minute your music comes out. And you can see who listens to it. Is that alarming too, though? I don’t know. The world is so small now.
Where do people listen to your music most? Do you have a strong Philly following? When I think of Philly for music, I feel like it’s a very embracing city in terms of music. The Bird and Bee did a Hall & Oates cover record. I couldn’t say we have a huge following in Philly but I think of it as a city for music lovers. Spotify is kind of incredible. On your artist page you can see all the cities and countries that listen to you most. Mexico City for some reason plays my music more than any other city. I have fans in Germany, too. For the Bird and the Bee, our top 10 cities are all in the Philippines. In America we have the most fans, but we’re listened to [in more concentrated areas] in the Philippines. Q Inara George | Jan. 26. Doors 7pm. Show: 8:30 p.m.. $15. The Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St. bootandsaddlephilly.com This Q&A has been edited for length and clarity. TWITTER: @MAXMMARIN

Katharine Powell portrays Nora in “A Doll’s House at Arden Theatre Company, running through March 4.
Power duo Two local theater productions — one old and one brand new — bring the #MeToo moment exquisitely to the Philly stage BY A.D. AMOROSI
R
ipping “Law & Order: SVUâ€? episode plots from the headlines is just the beginning. Sooner or later, our theater and cinema artists will begin the yeoman’s work of creating works that speak to, and come from, the speciďŹ cs of the #MeToo movement. In the wake of Weinstein, women are mobilizing en masse to form production companies, head up ďŹ lm studios and make their stories heard – and loudly to boot. But that doesn’t mean that poignant, gutsy stories about female empowerment aren’t already out there. In fact, two of them are currently on Philadelphia stages. While one-time Philadelphia playwright MJ Kaufman – a revolutionary genderqueer, trans-masculine author – is staging the new “Sensitive Guysâ€? at InterAct Theatre through Feb. 11, Henrik Ibsen’s 1879 drama “A Doll’s Houseâ€? is currently running at the Arden until March 4.
3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20
“Sensitive Guysâ€? uses a small liberal arts college as backdrop to tell the story of a group of supposedly woke guys who are part of a men’s peer education group. The group’s examination of topics such as male privilege breaks down when a member of the gang is accused of committing sexual assault. “I was inspired by so many stories I heard about organizing against a culture of sexual assault on college campuses,â€? Kaufman says. “In particular, I was inspired by my brother’s experience in a men’s peer education group at his college. I also was interested in how ambitious college-age people are – how hopeful and optimistic – so much so that they would believe they could end sexual assault everywhere in ďŹ ve years‌ I wanted that hope and optimism in a play about a subject this heavy.â€? Kaufman didn’t write “Sensitive Guysâ€? to be ahead of any curve where toxic masculinity or rape culture are concerned. (“Women, queer and trans people all know how pervasive and deep this problem is,â€? he says. “We
MJ Kaufman’s “Sensitive Guys is on stage at InterAct Theatre through Feb.11. live in a rape culture.) He had developed this play at InterAct in June 2016, and PlayPenn in July 2016, months before #MeToo’s emergence. To Kaufman, these are simply themes and realities that are always current – just like electricity. “I think the current shift towards holding celebrities accountable is very important, he said. “Also I hope our cultural conversation can start to go deeper. How do we respond to rape and harassment in our schools and workplaces? How do we respond to sexual violence when no one famous or powerful is
involved? I think we have a ways to go in theater and certainly hope I can be part of holding us accountable.â€? Meanwhile, the Arden’s small Arcadia stage – jointly conceived, staged and lit by director Terrence J. Nolen and designer Jorge Cousineau – has taken on the feeling of a boxing ring with Swedish modernist furnishings. It sets the mood for “A Doll’s House,â€? in which, rather than throwing punches, the play’s famed couple, Nora and Torvald, tackle acts of oppression, fealty, male hierarchy and forgiveness (or lack thereof) like champs. Simon Stephens’ contemporary version of Ibsen’s classic presents the same slow-burn story about a woman’s identity. Katharine Powell, the actress and practicing therapist, portrays Nora’s transitions masterfully, from helpless irty vixen to child-wife to deceitful schemer to, ďŹ nally, the strong woman unafraid of going it alone. “A Doll’s Houseâ€? is, at its heart, about discovering one’s self in the context of a marriage. Here, Nora’s oppressive relationship has left her with a divided sense of self – a fracturing that Powell labors to show on stage. “In terms of creating Nora I was interested in eshing out her humanity, all of whose colors come through at the end of the play,â€? says Powell. “She is a resourceful, loving woman who has successfully built an identity based on the expectations of others – as daughter, wife, mother. Her disappointment at the end of the play stems from the fact that her husband had not felt about her as she felt about him. Still, the hardest thing to do then would be to walk out on her husband as she does.â€? The Arden’s artistic director, Nolen, wanted to work with Powell because of her strengths as an actress as well as a therapist. He made her an equal part of the creative team early on. “A week or two after last year’s presidential election, we gathered together a group of actors and once again read this play,â€? Nolen stated in the play’s notes. “I knew this play or thought I did, yet I heard things in it that I hadn’t heard before.â€? This was a play that needed to be done now, and Katharine Powell needed to play Nora. For Nolen, there was no other Nora. But Powell wasn’t looking to portray the protagonist as a political statement. In fact, the actress steered far away from such trappings. But watching the show today, the #MeToo parallels of Nora and “A Doll’s Houseâ€? are all too clear. “She speaks truth to power – Tovald’s power – at a time when women had very few options for agency,â€? Powell says. “That reects on what we are going through in #MeToo where women have come forward to speak their truth to power daily in a public way. And just as in ‘A Doll’s House,’ everyone in life is complicit in this power dynamic. We all turn a blind eye – but no more.â€? Q TWITTER: @ADAMOROSI

I
t was the pressing question we all wanted to know about Michael Wolff, author of the White House tell-all “Fire and Furyâ€?: How did he take Fred Armisen’s portrayal of him on Saturday Night Live? In “extremely good spirit,â€? Wolff told a packed house at the Philadelphia Free Library on Tuesday, Jan. 16, where he gave a talk and signed copies of his best-selling book. But in all seriousness, Wolff’s answers weren’t too dissimilar from the satirical depiction. Over the course of the evening, when Dick Polman, WHYY political columnist, asked about the book’s reported errors, the self-proclaimed nonpolitical writer responded with zingers, such as “Do you believe it? It’s like any book you are going to read...how do you feel about it?â€? and “Just read the book, and if speaks to you then I’ve done my job.â€? “In the multitude of future editions, we will get it right,â€? he said sarcastically. Wolff didn’t hold back any punches when it came to his descriptions of Trump as “stupidâ€? and “narcissisticâ€? — a leader who frustrates his entire staff, who were happy to vent their grievances to the author on a couch in the West Wing. While reading the audience’s questions pre-written on notecards, Poleman ďŹ nished on an anonymous comment that seemed to sum it up best: “It takes a Wolff to catch a wolf.â€? So what does Trump’s presidency mean for you as an immigrant? HUMPHREY: Him and his group are clearly trying to reduce both legal and illegal immigration. I’m probably not a target of deportation, and that’s just obviously a privilege of mine. But it’s scary. People in the school that I attend that have family members from other countries might not be able to come to see them graduate. What did you think of Wolff? JOHNSON: He deďŹ nitely piqued my curiosity, and for a number of people. I think it’s great that he can say the president is crazy, the fact that he can speak that bluntly.

SEX
PHOTO: GGAADD/FLICKR
It’s been decades since a social movement so thoroughly challenged the way Americans think about sex.
The sex of #MeToo What if I told you the key to ending an epidemic of sexual violence could also make your sex life more pleasurable? BY TIMAREE SCHMIT
I
f I told you some of the most effective irtation techniques will also insulate you from accusations of misbehavior, would you be interested? Good news: If we can harness the energy of the #MeToo movement using a sex-positive, pleasure-focused consent model, we might do just that. But ďŹ rst, let’s start with the critiques. While most people agree something needs to be done about sexual predators, many have pointed out the majority of news coverage ignores the experiences of women of color — and also puts responsibility on survivors. Some ďŹ nd the inescapable ow of stories traumatic. Others say the movement has gone too far, to the point of criminalizing every interaction between men
-$18$5<
and women. Actress Catherine Deneuve joined more than 100 other inuential French women to say that while the efforts were well-intentioned, it had gone too far. In a letter published in LeMonde, the women began: “Rape is a crime. But insistent or clumsy irting is not a crime.â€? When previously unknown website Babe broke the story last week about one woman’s negative dating experience with comedian Aziz Ansari, the internet exploded. One frustrated reaction can best be articulated by a friend’s Facebook comment: “Dating is already hard enough.â€? Commenters have bemoaned that coming forth with these more nuanced, less egregious allegations suchas those made against Ansari destroy the credibility of women who really do have evil activity to allege, and tell others in
similar situations, “That is on you.â€? I, however, am ecstatic the #MeToo movement has elicited such a wide variety of stories, because the same cultural changes that will reduce assaults will also empower us to have better sex and healthier relationships. As a sexuality educator, I’m interested in how all of these object lessons can be useful in navigating an increasingly complex dating world. It’s my job to help people learn not only how to negotiate boundaries, but perhaps more importantly: have pleasurable experiences. Ethical sexual behavior requires freely given, reversible, informed, enthusiastic, speciďŹ c consent by all involved. Fortunately, this is an innate part of approaching sex as a collaborative activity. It doesn’t mean we have to be in love or even equally attracted, it just means that we’re both present, reacting to each other. A brilliant analogy created by Thomas MacAulay Millar, in his article "Toward a Performance Model of Sex," compares sex to a jam session between musicians. A jam session can happen almost anywhere, between any number of musicians, go on for any amount of time, include whatever content the performers like, and the only way it will work is if everyone is continually communicating and working together. But that’s not what most of us are taught about sex. Most us get lessons in avoiding negative outcomes — preventing STIs and unwanted pregnancy, escaping assault or the accusations of it. The way we socialize kids is
also super gendered. Boys are taught to think of accessing women’s bodies as an achievement and girls are told to think defensively and say “noâ€? conďŹ dently. It becomes a game where one player is in pursuit and the other is fending off advances until some rare moment of speciďŹ c conditions in which they’ll willingly cede ground. But then what? Where’s the conversation about what feels good? Not all breaches of consent are the same, because not all mistakes in ascertaining it are the same. There are the people who approach sex from a predatory standpoint: they look for vulnerabilities. There are those who are self-involved and goal-oriented, so they’re aware enough to stop at obvious red lights, but aren’t prioritizing partners’ feelings. And then there are the guys who would prefer to have a mutually interested partner but have difďŹ culty navigating the dueling expectations of being both respectful and masculine. This is not to say only men can violate consent, but it is a foible of our current gender politics: we have yet to clearly redeďŹ ne masculinity in a way that is powerful without being insensitive. We’re more comfortable with women being assertive and independent, but not everyone is equally convinced men should be taking on historically feminine traits. Yet this would be the best route to both navigating consent and having enjoyable sex. Women can practice identifying their desires and asking openly for what they want, while men can practice more empathy, prioritize the comfort of others, and ďŹ nd strength in vulnerability. What does this look like in practice? It means a lot more talking, but it doesn’t have to be boring. Rather than just going for a touch or meekly asking for a kiss, make direct, conďŹ dent statements of your desires. First consider the context, look for indications of genuine interest, and put yourself on the line by describing what you want. Let their response dictate your next move, either doing what you both want or accepting rejection and moving on. This applies to all phases: asking for a date, initial physical contact or moving through a sexual situation. When it’s escalated to a point where talking becomes onerous, just make sure you’re staying connected to each other, not zoning out and simply using their body. Give indications when you like what’s happening, offer directions and speciďŹ c requests, focus as much on their reaction as the task itself. Again: approach this as a collaborative creation and see where it leads, rather than driving toward a speciďŹ c outcome. If the #MeToo movement is truly successful, it will result not just in weeding out “badâ€? people, but in creating an entire cultural shift in our approach toward power and sexuality. And if we do it right, we will not only address sexual misconduct but give all of us a lot more positive experiences. Q TWITTER: @TIMAREE_LEIGH

City officials said that roughly 50,000 demonstrators hit the parkway last Saturday.
Resist, persist, and rise up Despite calls for a boycott, the resistance showed up (again) for the Women’s March on Philadelphia. Here’s what happened. BY ANDREA CANTOR
H
andmaids, Suffragettes, and Lady Liberties took to the streets on an unseasonably warm Saturday, Jan. 20, for the second Women’s March on Philadelphia. Serious signs, such as “MeTooâ€? and “Trans Women Are Women,â€? mixed with humorous messages, like “My Dog is a Feministâ€? and “Girls Just Want To Have Funds.â€? Of course, not all marchers came dressed in extravagant costumes bandying poster-board quips, but turnout was impressive nonetheless. While ďŹ nal crowd numbers are still being calculated, city Deputy Communications Director Ajeenah Amir conďŹ rmed to Philly Weekly via email around 50,000 people showed up Saturday — roughly the same as last year’s march.
3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20
Those numbers come in spite of a social media-driven boycott against the march, which was sparked late last week by rumors of increased police presence. March organizer Salima Suswell called the allegations about security checkpoints and stop-and-frisk body searches an “absolute rumor.â€? And Dennis Wilson, deputy commissioner for the Philadelphia Police Department, clariďŹ ed that security measures would be nothing out of the ordinary for a large public event. Still, it remained unclear whether the damage caused by the rumors had already been done. Thousands of marchers set out from Aviator Park at 11 a.m. and proceeded to Eakins Oval. With a crowd stretched down the parkway, participants listened to a lineup of performances and speeches. Both city ofďŹ cials and everyday women took the stage to voice their rallying calls for equality.

“Philadelphia has never had a woman mayor. Pennsylvania has never had a woman governor. Pennsylvania has never had a female senator. Pennsylvania is 40th out of 50 states in terms of female representation in politics,â€? said newly elected City Controller Rebecca Rhynhart, standing in front of “the Rocky Stepsâ€? at the art museum. The speech echoed the event page’s mission to celebrate the past year’s accomplishments, but recommit to the cause for 2018. Aligned with that goal, the march’s theme was “We Resist. We Persist. We Rise.â€? “What I hope is that this is absolutely symbolic of what’s going to happen this year,â€? State Rep. Madeleine Dean told PW. “I think this is going to be a very exciting year, where a lot of women, young women, women of all colors, they are going to be involved, they are going to be engaged, they are going to be working on campaigns, they are going to be running for ofďŹ ce, and they are going to be voting.â€? Suswell, a member of the PA Women’s Commission, reected on the improvements since the ďŹ rst Women’s March on Philadelphia: “Women are less afraid to speak up. With the ‘MeToo’ movement and now ‘Time’s Up,’ I think it has encouraged a lot of women to come out and have their voices heard.â€? Founder and head organizer of the event, Emily Morse, had her voice heard last year when she opened up about her history of sexual abuse. This year, back with her daughter once again by her side, Morse discussed her past and how the global Women’s March fueled the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements. Recorded as the largest demonstration in history, many argued last year’s marches did not do enough for inclusion. The signature pink pussy hat, which was still visibly worn by many this year, was a note of contestation due to its color and anatomical exclusivity. “I fought very hard to make sure my community was included,â€? explained Suswell. “So I think we have a very diverse lineup of speakers today in a very diverse crowd out here. So there has deďŹ nitely been progress from last year.â€? Protesters dispersed around 2:30pm. As they left, people adhered their handcrafted signs to the surrounding fences. The emptied streets of the Parkway remained ďŹ lled with artwork and messages of both resistance and unity. “This is deďŹ nitely the year of the woman,â€? said Nedia S. Ralston, the ďŹ rst African American woman regional director for the governor of Pennsylvania and an earlier speaker on behalf of Gov. Tom Wolf. “We’ve always been in the forefront. We’ve always been mobilizing. We’ve always been standing united in order to push that needle forward, so I think today it’s just a reection of previous years and years to come.â€? SAVAGE LOVE
Mother Love DAN SAVAGE My father left my mother abruptly when I was 14 years old, and he hasn’t contacted either of us since. It was a crushing blow for her, and she retreated from the world. She was never bitter about it, but it was devastating. She lost the love of her life for no apparent reason and was left completely alone, except for me. We have both done our best to forget about him. We were extremely close for the next four years and actually slept in the same bed every night. Eventually, we began doing something that most people would consider evil but neither of us has ever regretted. It was just something that happened. And it wasn’t something that just happened once—it went on for two years and ended only when I left to go to university. I haven’t thought about this for years, and it is something my mother and I have never discussed. She has since remarried and seems perfectly ďŹ ne. But even today, we sometimes send each other friendly messages that are vaguely suggestive. The problem is I mentioned it to my wife recently and she went ballistic. She called me and my mother sick and moved into another bedroom and refuses to have sex with me. I wish I had never mentioned it, but it was part of a truth-ordare session we were having. This has been the situation for the last three months. I have ďŹ nally lost my patience and I am thinking of leaving. I have never cheated on my wife or hurt her, either physically or emotionally, and I have supported her ďŹ nancially while she studies at university. I have mentioned going to a counselor, but she refuses and claims that she is married to a monster and that no woman would want me. We don’t have any children—so if I were to leave, I wouldn’t be disrupting an innocent’s life. Do you have any advice? – Truthful Revelation Unmakes Two Happy Spouses I’m not a professional counselor, TRUTHS, but I’m gonna climb out on a limb and say that a game of truth or dare isn’t the right time to reveal an incestuous sexual relationship with a parent. Dr. Hani Miletski and Dr.
-$18$5<
Joe Kort, on the other hand, are professionals: Dr. Miletski is a psychotherapist and a sex therapist, and Dr. Kort is a sex and relationship therapist. Both are certiďŹ ed by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists, and both are authors—Dr. Miletski literally wrote the book on the subject of mother-son incest: MotherSon Incest: The Unthinkable Broken Taboo Persists. “There’s no wonder his wife is so upset,â€? said Dr. Miletski. “Sexual relations between mother and son are considered the most taboo form of incest.â€? Dr. Miletski told me it isn’t uncommon for a woman who has been abandoned by her husband to turn to an adolescent son for emotional comfort. “These women are often very insecure and needy,â€? said Dr. Miletski. “Unbeknownst to the son—and sometimes to the mother—the son begins to feel responsible for his mother’s well-being and emotional support. The son becomes ‘parentiďŹ ed’ and is treated by his mother as a substitute husband. Occasionally, this close relationship between a mother and her son evolves into a sexual relationship, and the substitute husband becomes her lover as well. The situation described in this letter sounds exactly like that. And while I’m glad this man believes he has not been affected by this boundary violation, [the fact that he and his mother are] sending suggestive messages to each other may suggest otherwise.â€? Dr. Miletski prefers not to use terms like “abuseâ€? or “traumaâ€? unless the person involved uses those terms themselves—which you didn’t, TRUTHS, but I’m going to go ahead and use them. Here goes: You say you have no regrets, and you don’t mention feeling traumatized by the experience, but the absence of trauma doesn’t confer some sort of retroactive, after-the-fact immunity on your mother. She is responsible for her actions— actions that were abusive and highly likely to leave you traumatized. “In the mental-health ďŹ eld, we have a growing body of work showing that not everyone who is abused is necessarily traumatized,â€? said Dr. Kort. “I have seen countless men who have been sexually abused by their mothers who do not label it as abuse because they were not traumatized. But his mother seduced him, dismissing the sexual and emotional needs of a teenage boy. There is no other way to describe this other than abuse, however consensual he may have perceived it to be at the time.â€? But that was then, TRUTHS. What do you do about your situation now? Q

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING: Kathy and Pat Conway far exceeded my expectations on selling the house I rehabbed. Besides from being professional, courteous, friendly and extremely knowledgeable, they are the nicest people. I consider them as part of my family and feel like we’ve known them forever. Pat doesn’t stop at anything. He goes over and above his role as a realtor, he involves himself in everything even things that he isn’t responsible for, he does it to get the job done and he does it so well. I have never experienced working with any realtor that does it all. I will deďŹ nitely continue to use The Conway Team. Sincerely, Neal Rubinâ€?
