T

he Swiss poet Rilke wrote that standing in front of some works of art enables viewers to see the world more clearly.

When Collective Action, a silent art auction, infiltrated gallery space at 990 Spring Garden on Jan. 15, it contained several such illuminating works; and was born from the frustration and mixed feelings surrounding last November’s presidential election results.

Collective Action sought to raise $20k, with proceeds from art sales to be donated to a variety of social justice groups: Planned Parenthood, NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Network of Abortion Funds, International Refugee Assistance Project and the Natural Resources Defense council, to name a few.

n Friday, Donald Trump will begin his presidency with the promise that he will “Make America Great Again.”

Nine years ago, he couldn’t even make Philadelphia great again, with the spectacular fail called Trump Tower Philadelphia.

Maybe we got lucky: The place, as shown in this 2008 advertisement that appeared in Philadelphia Weekly, would’ve been a monstrosity. The tower would have featured $3.5 million penthouses overlooking the Delaware River waterfront, presumably with tasteless yachts tied up along its gaudy dock.

Here’s a breakdown.

In March 2007, Trump told Canadian pub The Globe and Mail that he’s “always made more money in bad markets than in good markets.”

Coming from a man who insults women as often as he does, one has to ask what truly defines in Trump’s mind as “a fantastic guy with a wonderful wife?”

The familiar phrase “fine-tuning your long game”applies to both golf and relationships if you ask Trump. In a 1991 interview with Esquire, Trump mentioned how pretty girlfriends are the antidotes to bad press. “You know, it doesn’t really matter what they write as long as you’ve got a young and beautiful piece of ass.”Wonder if that quote made it into his book, The Best Golf Advice I Ever Received.

Toasting at night apparently has led to a fruitful sex life for The Donald. In his 1990 book “Surviving at the Top, Trump took a stab at explaining his historic success with the ladies – all while taking a familiar timely stab at the press. “I’ve never had any trouble in bed, but if I’d had affairs with half the starlets and female athletes the newspapers linked me with, I’d have no time to breathe.”

You walk down the street, you get shot.”

Boulevard of Broken Dreams The alleged love-child of legendary funnyman Jerry Lewis is homeless on the streets of Northeast Philly?

S

he grew up on Fifth Avenue, frolicking with A-list stars. Now she lives on the streets of Northeast Philly, scraping by one day at a time, certain that famed funnyman Jerry Lewis is her father.

Suzan Minoret is the antithesis of the rags to riches story. Short on money and equally short on her famous father’s show business clout, she and a longtime traveling companion spend their days foraging for subsistence and their nights sheltering in storage units or 24-hour laundromats—at least until an unsympathetic manager shows up and kicks them to the curb.

It would appear a calamitous downfall for a woman who in her formative years shared playdates with Liza Minelli and hotel scion Francesca Hilton.

She learned to speak fluent French alongside Lauren Bacall’s daughter, Leslie Bogart, at an elite Manhattan secondary school, and then made her public debut at the annual International Debutante Ball.

In 2008, there was hope for a better life. She came to Philadelphia at the invitation of a Cherry Hill, N.J.-based celebrity agent who had been trying to publish and publicize her autobiography, which they planned to call Jerry’s Kid. He put her up in a home in the Northeast. There were TV appearances, an interview with Howard Stern, and even a reunion with her half-brother, the former pop star, Gary Lewis.

But that fell apart and for most of the last eight years, Suzan, 64, has been homeless, wandering the streets around Roosevelt Boulevard, occasionally spending the night in a cardboard shack, holding out hope that one day Jerry Lewis will acknowledge her as his daughter.

“I’m not happy with where I am.

There’s nothing about my situation to be happy about,” she divulged over coffee and breakfast sandwiches at Dunkin’ Donuts on Cottman Avenue.

“I wish somebody could get to my father to let him know what my situation is. Maybe he doesn’t have all the facts.”

The fact is, Lewis has never denied publicly that Suzan is his biological daughter. Nor has he confirmed it. Lewis did not reply to multiple requests for comment.

Life on the street: Suzan Minoret, the alleged daughter of funnyman Jerry Lewis, has been homeless for the past eight years, wandering the streets around Roosevelt Boulevard.

When I met Suzan, she showed me a scrapbook of her life, with photographs of her long-gone celebrity friends, remembrances of her international travels, a telling photograph of her posing with an old Jerry Lewis record album.

The facial resemblance between father and would-be daughter is striking and clearly backs her story. And so does DNA testing conducted in 2008.

As Suzan tells it, her mother, Lynn Dixon, was a successful fashion model who wed and had a son in the mid-1940s. That marriage crumbled quickly, and Dixon soon met 23-yearold Jerry Lewis. At the time, the man who one day would be an international celebrity was just getting started in show business, teaming with Dean Martin and making radio and early TV appearances.

Milton Berle introduced Dixon to Jerry one night after a Martin and Lewis performance at the legendary Copacabana club. Though Jerry was married with a young son, he couldn’t ignore his attraction to Dixon.

Their three-year affair became an engagement when Jerry gave Dixon a ring, Suzan said. But Jerry couldn’t get a divorce—his wife, Patti Palmer, was Catholic.

Suzan was born on Feb. 3, 1952.

moting his soon-to-be released film, Sailor Beware, so he convinced Berle to visit Dixon in the hospital on his behalf, Suzan said. Two years later, Dixon married prominent Big Apple restaurateur and nightclub owner Hy Uchitel, who—along with his brother Maurice—was also known for his alleged associations with some of the country’s biggest organized crime figures.

The Uchitel name still resonates in New York’s social circles. Maurice’s granddaughter Rachel Uchitel is the shapely nightclub hostess who famously lost her fiance in the World Trade Center attack then years later gained notoriety as one of Tiger Woods’ love interests and as a reality TV personality.

As a youngster, Suzan and her parents lived in the hotel above their French restaurant, Voisin, at 63rd Street and Park Avenue in the heart of upscale Midtown. (James Bond fans will remember the restaurant from Ian Fleming’s novel, Diamonds Are Forever.)

Each day brought Suzan into the company of real-life icons from the entertainment, business and political worlds.

“Liza Minelli and her sister, Lorna Luft, came up to my room and we played with our dolls while their

mother, Judy Garland, was having lunch with my mother in the restaurant,” Suzan recalled. “Zsa Zsa Gabor’s daughter, Francesca, came, too.

Leslie Bogart [daughter of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall] was in my class in French school. I had them all to my birthday parties.

“My mother would find time to have lunch with Ethel Merman and dinner with Pat Nixon.”

John F. Kennedy also was an enthusiastic patron.

“When he was in New York, he had to go there,” Suzan said. “He made the Secret Service set everything up the day before and when he came he made them walk all the way down Park Avenue from 76th Street to 63rd Street following him.”

Suzan’s scrapbook is filled with photos from that period of her life.

There’s an image of her as a 9-yearold chatting with actress and pin-up model Jayne Mansfield. There’s another shot of a 16-year-old Suzan and film star Jane Russell exchanging embraces. Yet another photo depicts a teenage Suzan posing with pop idols Davy Jones and Peter Tork at the height of The Monkees’ popularity.

Suzan’s own palpable charisma leaps from the photos, too. Her long dark hair, big brown eyes, broad smile and dimpled chin seem to blend the best qualities of both her biological parents. These days, she still has a broad smile and that pronounced chin—a Jerry Lewis trademark—although her hair is graying and her overall appearance is of a stereotypical bag lady.

When I met her near Cottman and the Boulevard, she wore layer upon layer of old flannel shirts, sweat tops and insulated jackets, as well as a faded blue winter scarf and gray cap.

She carried three or four oversized duffel bags to tote her other personal effects.

Like those celebrities whom Suzan once knew so well, Jerry Lewis was a frequent, though irregular, presence in her childhood. As Suzan’s mother kept the true identity of her daughter’s biological father a secret from Hy, she nonetheless found ways to reunite father and daughter. When Suzan was 2, Jerry and Lynn enrolled her in the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. When the Uchitels vacationed in Miami Beach, they stayed at the posh

Suzan’s scrapbook also contains news clippings from Suzan’s own flirtation with stardom. At 17, she wore a white gown, pearls and a tiara and mixed with the daughters of princes, politicians and industrialists at the 1969 International Debutante Ball at the Waldorf Astoria.

A year later, Suzan married Frenchman Francois Minoret. Their union commanded a four-paragraph article on the society pages of The New York Times, but it was ill-fated. The couple had sons in 1971 and ’79. But by the mid-’80s, the relationship had fallen to pieces amid the pressure of what Suzan described as her husband’s meddling yet aloof family. She became anorexic while agonizing over her family troubles; her in-laws tried to commit her to a mental hospital.

“They wanted to sedate me for five days,” she said. “But I saw One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and I wasn’t going.”

“When I was little, we’d have a cabana around the pool and he’d get the one next to ours so he could be near us. He’d play with me in the sand, all of that,” Suzan said. “He’d be silly. He say something like, ‘Let’s play ball,’ and then he’d fall all over the place.”

Back in New York, they’d arrange discreet meetings periodically and often cross paths by pure chance.

After all, they socialized in the same circles. Publicly, meanwhile, Jerry led a happily married life: By 1964, he and Palmer had six sons including one adopted—but no daughters.

“He was very affectionate. He gave me gifts, dolls. And I loved dolls,” Suzan said. “He wanted a daughter but he could never tell anyone he already had one.”

herself alone again, but she vowed to look after Susskin just as he had taken care of her. They decided to try to track down Jerry Lewis, whom Suzan hadn’t seen or spoken with in some 25 years.

“I started wanting to reach my father even though I was trying to give him some space with his new family,” Suzan said. “But I waited too long and now it’s hard for me to even get in contact with him.”

Lewis had finally divorced his first wife in 1980 and married SanDee Pitnick three years later. They adopted a girl, Danielle Sara Lewis, in 1992.

Suzan figured she’d try to reach Jerry through his eldest son, her half-brother, Gary.

In the years that Suzan was mastering Alouette and enchanting the New York glitterati, Gary Lewis parlayed his name and his drumkit into pop music stardom. The Lewis family lived in Los Angeles and that’s where Gary Lewis and the Playboys took off.

Their first single, This Diamond Ring, reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 list and launched a string of seven consecutive Top 10 records in 1965 and ’66.

By the mid-2000s, Gary was touring again with a new version of The Playboys. Suzan turned up at one of his shows in Florida and introduced herself as his sister. The encounter was brief.

Gary didn’t show it, but he was intrigued by the possibility that his long lost sister was alive and well, according to longtime family friend Rick Saphire, who was working for both Gary and Jerry Lewis at the time. Gary Lewis did not respond to requests for comment for this article.

Suzan found Saphire’s phone number on the internet, called him and asked him to help her reconnect with the Lewises. Saphire, who as a child performed a comedic magic act on The Tonight Show with Jerry Lewis as guest host, now owns and operates a magic shop—it’s called The Magic Shop—on Marlton Pike in Cherry Hill.

In 2007, Saphire booked Gary for several personal appearances in Florida and Suzan asked to meet her half-brother.

“She seemed like a great girl and I liked her,” Saphire told me in an interview at his shop. “I didn’t buy her story, that she was disabled and couldn’t work. [But] I asked Gary if he was willing to meet Suzan. He said yes, but he wanted it kept informal.”

That one casual encounter in a South Florida hotel room left no doubt in Gary’s mind of their common bloodlines.

In the meantime, her mother had divorced Uchitel, married a film producer and moved to California. Uchitel moved to Miami Beach and had become deathly ill.

He would die months after Suzan fled back to the United States, leaving her marriage and French-born sons behind.

It’s been a recurring theme in her life: companionship then abandonment, optimism then disaster, hope then desperation.

Suzan settled in South Florida and worked as a receptionist and restaurant hostess. Her widowed mother eventually joined her in the Sunshine State. The divorced Suzan met a new beau and after a lengthy engagement married for a second time. But a car accident in 1996 again thrust her life into disarray.

She told me that she suffered a severe concussion and whiplash in the head-on collision. Although she was not hospitalized overnight, she claimed that the injuries resulted in “partial brain damage” affecting her short-term memory. The episode rendered her unable to hold a job. Her new husband left her within weeks.

Suzan credits her companion, David Susskin, whom she calls her stepbrother, with caring for her through that difficult time. The two met years ago when Suzan’s mother became engaged to Susskin’s father. Their parents never married, but Suzan and Susskin became inseparable as de facto siblings and life partners.

“I almost died. He saved my life and got me back to normal. He took care of me,” Suzan said.

Susskin worked several jobs to support them both, until he, too, became disabled in a traffic crash. Another motorist rear-ended his vehicle at 100 miles per hour, he said.

Suzan survived for a while on the proceeds from a legal settlement from her accident, as well as financial support from her mother, who died in 2004. With her own sons living overseas and out of touch, Suzan found

“Hardcore’s stayed with me only in that I learned from its work ethic, and its DIY feel,” says Gunn. “It was however finding out about jazz through [WRTI 90.1-FM] and the likes of [American jazz composer] Sun Ra Arkestra... that my whole world opened up.”

While he began crafting a lush, hypnotic series of his own albums starting in 2007, it was a brief shining moment with Kurt Vile in 2012 to which so many fans and critics cling.

“I only played with him for like a week,” says Gunn with a big laugh.

“We knew each other forever from the old neighborhood, and have been friends. I started as an opening act for his 2012 shows and he wound up asking me if I could join the Violators to flesh songs for the album he was working on next, Wakin’ on a Pretty Daze. But it was a blip, us actually working together. Now and then, he’s been supportive of what I do, but I was doing my own thing before him and certainly kept doing it.”

His own thing at present, Eyes on the Line, is suspiciously non-autobiographical, keeping listeners at a distance, literally and figuratively. “I’m not a confessional songwriter, but rather I keep the language more imagery driven and the ideas intentionally vague. They’re open to interpretation and I love to see what bounces back to me.”

f anyone can pull complex emotion from threadbare, intimate instrumentation, it’s Steve Gunn.

Lansdowne’s Gunn and the Brooklyn-based Lee Ranaldo (formerly of Sonic Youth, currently of The Dust and El Rayo) are normally associated as the guitarists creating those opulent, noisy gigs with the legendary Jack Rose and the very-muchalive Kurt Vile. Now the duo—along with Meg Baird—will showcase their own sound on Saturday at PhilaMOCA. Now Gunn faces a new challenge after a long career in blues, folk and avant-garde soundscapes finally releasing a major label album with Matador Records called Eyes on the Lines in 2016 chock full of his elliptical writing, singing and trance-pop sensibilities. The results of Eyes on the Lines are as gorgeous, hypnotic and rewarding as anything in his past—only now Gunn seems to be longing for the simplicity and sparseness of his earlier days.

“I’ve been steadily touring around my new album with a band for the last year and playing solo was something I did before that,” said Gunn fresh off a show in Quebec. “Playing [solo shows] got away from me, so I wanted to return to that. I don’t have as many opportunities to be alone as I once did and wanted to simplify everything a little bit [in an attempt to] reinterpret those new songs.”

Gunn recalled the inspiration gleaned from working at University of Pennsylvania’s Institute of Contemporary Art, Manhattan’s PaceWildenstein Gallery and for minimalist visual artist Sol Lewitt as a large part of shaping Eyes on the Lines. Such minimalism forced Gunn to “approach things in a more direct way, utilizing repetition and working alone within simpler structures.” All elements he has tried to incorporate into playing and composing.

Not everything in his past was so meditative. As a youngster, Gunn developed a longing for punk rock and hardcore and maintained a diet of Fugazi-ish frenzy during his stints both working and living in Philadelphia.

Collective Action >>From page 1: Additionally, much of the same work from the Collective Action show will be featured on buildings all across the city on Inauguration Day, for the Signs of Solidarity movement, a familial jumpoff to last Saturday’s event.

“We were just thinking about what are some things that we can do in the arts world to show people that the election of Donald Trump just isn’t normal,” said Conrad Benner, a long-time activist through art who runs the popular website, Streets Dept. Originally only planning to showcase bannered artwork on abandoned buildings, Benner and other artists came up with the notion of asking recognizable structures throughout the city if they wanted in. “To our surprise, everyone we reached out to said yes. Now we have 30 artists making close to 30 banners that will be all-across to the city on Inauguration Day.” As for Collective Action, it was arranged and executed by Benner, Grace Ahn, Jacob Klensin, Brooke DiLeone and Daniel Levine, in a direct response to the “increasingly dangerous, self-serving people” associated with the President-elect’s administration.

The initial idea for Collective Action came by way of Ahn in the post-election slump that gripped so many communities across the nation. The previous iteration of the auction was originally planned to take place in mid-December, at a local bar with a fundraising goal of just $2.5k.

Increasing hostility toward the alt-right has created a grassroots movement in reactionary protest. Alongside each artist’s display that night was a note that

offered this poignant message: The recognition of what is wrong with our country, much like any piece of art dedicated to making its viewer see more clearly, can start a dialogue about the codification of disputed values. Thanks to Trump, as a fact of life, citizens are beginning to realize what it means to come together against a common enemy for the first time in a long time. This being no small feat.

Collective Action’s message is vital because we need to hear it. From artists reflecting a world that we thought we knew, the difficulty in coming to terms with a frightening truth is one more reason for our acceptance of it.

“We’re just people who are disheartened by the kind of campaign and the kind of person Donald Trump seems to be and are worried that he is going to attack the communities he said he was going to attack,” said Benner. “We’re holding this fundraiser to raise money either for those communities or organizations that help and protect those communities.”

After reaching out over Facebook, and messages from over 150 artists interested in sharing work—Collective Action moved to a larger venue and decided to reschedule to align when its message would hit home.

They also modified their fundraising goal to accommodate the increase in anticipated size. Which again happened to be well-timed.

“Before the weekend, before the inauguration, on purpose,” said Benner. “Mainly because we thought hopefully people would be just as pissed as we were.”

n Monday, thousands took to streets in neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia, some to march against sociopolitical injustice, others to simply clean up untended public spaces, and some simply to honor the late Martin Luther King Jr.’s life of public service.

But while his achievements loom large, few would be able to retrace King’s quiet footsteps across the Delaware Valley, especially those he made prior to his stardom.

Many might recall the image of King in West Philadelphia in 1965, delivering a seminal speech at 40th and Lancaster Streets as part of his “Freedom Now” tour. An estimated crowd of 10,000 gathered in the streets to listen. Today at that location, Mural Arts Philadelphia has a visual homage to that speech on the side of a building.

Just 15 years prior however, King was a student at Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pa., where he worked to receive his Bachelor’s of Divinity between 1948 and 1951. During the same span, he also took philosophy and history courses at the University of Pennsylvania, just blocks from the famed 40th and Lancaster speech.

If it weren’t for King’s formative experiences in the area, that speech may never have happened. Biographers attribute some of King’s fire for civil rights to one local incident in particular.

While at Crozer, King and several friends were denied service at a long-gone bar called Mary’s Café in the Jersey town of Maple Shade.

Details vary about the encounter, but according to Patrick Duff, a social activist who investigated the incident and urged city officials to commemorate the location, there’s evidence that King filed a complaint against the white tavern owner.

“Just think if that never happened at Mary’s Café, blacks may not be able to go to the same hospital as whites now,” Duff told the Medford Central Record.

Without a doubt, there are other rich details of King’s biography in the Delaware Valley that have yet to materialize.

A personal anecdote: Several years ago, an academic scholar crossed paths with this reporter’s family in Crestmont, a predominantly African-American neighborhood in Abington near the Willow Grove Mall. The scholar was looking for whoever lived in my neighbor’s house in the mid-20th century. He had reason to believe one of King’s associates during his years at Crozer lived in the house back in the 1950s, and that King himself might have visited the house. Unfortunately, no one had any recollection of the house’s occupants going back decades and recent attempts to reach the scholar and follow up on his King investigation were unsuccessful. —MAX MARIN

Hopefully it won’t be a one-off show.

Philly’s Writers Resistance hopes to keep its presence thriving throughout the Trump administration. They have a social media presence through Twitter and Tumblr. And the main goal at the end of the day isn’t just to bring Philadelphia’s divergent literary community together. The point was also to turn words into action.

hush swept over the packed theater when Ahmad Almallah said “I’m going to read this poem in Arabic.”

Then, a burst of applause.

Almallah delivered a moving piece

by Lebanese poet Jawdat Fakhreddine in its original language, followed by Almallah’s own English translation.

He was more than 30 writers from the Philadelphia area on stage at the National Museum of American Jewish History for the annual Writer’s Resistance event. With every seat full, the 300-plus in attendance overflowed into the aisles and the back of the room.

However, no one was there to see any writer in particular.

Partly because none of these writers were reading their own work.

What they were reading however, were words from blood-soaked centuries of American history. Texts that, in the words of one of the event’s organizers, “challenge the current threats against the U.S. constitution.”

The event in Philadelphia was meant to be a venue for civic and literary resistance in wake of Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 45th president of the United States. Dozens of similar gatherings happened simultaneously across the country last Sunday, not to mention a few events in Europe, celebrating both democracy and the freedom of expression.

And what a venue it was: two hours of nonstop readings that ranged from Arabic poems to American essays to theoretical tracts to political speeches, from the well-known to the obscure.

One writer read an anonymous open letter by a gay physician to the American Psychiatric Association in 1972, decrying the persecution of LGBT professionals in their field. Another read Absalom Jones’ 1799 “Petition of the People of Color.” There were love poems to bomb-blasted streets of Baghdad, Iraq. Fragments of Toni Morrison’s heavy prose. The plainspoken lyrics of Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen.

The readings flowed into each other with little introduction. The eclectic range of works—and the choice to have local writers read something other than their own words—was intentional.

Although it wasn’t the priority of the event, Popkin says that literary communion would be a great byproduct— one that could be cultivated at similar events down the road.

“Poetry is the richest community that Philly has, but it’s also all over the place,” Popkin noted. “It’s an embarrassment of riches in a certain way. We have so many writers. But at the same time we don’t have the legacy bookstore where they all gather. We don’t have the cultural hub.”
