FROM THE EDITOR

Deep roots KERITH GABRIEL

I

know I’m a week late to the party piling on debate of what was yet another Mummers Parade mired in controversy. However, given our publication’s namesake, I think that offers a pass. I actually wasn’t going to even jump on the bandwagon, until I saw all of the reports that emerged from the Jim Kenney-Jay-Z skit that had “Black Phillyâ€? in uproar. If you’re lost on what I’m referring to, the quick synopsis is that many feel that a skit during the parade that depicted a Black man dressed as Jay-Z walking a another actor dressed as Jim Kenney was just the latest in a long line of racially charged minstrel shows the Mummers Parade has a long and unsavory history of. Let me just preface this by saying I think the Mummers Parade can’t win. No matter how inclusive it tries to be in its satire, the whole parade in the eyes of many just comes off a a reminder that in the low-lying pockets of Philadelphia there are still some people who still see minorities as exactly that. Personally, I’ve always felt that it’s one of the dumbest traditions our city has. I equate it to standing in cages to watch the ball drop in Times Square for New Year’s Eve. It’s something you should experience, but once you’re there and see it ďŹ rsthand, you quickly realize it only placates to a certain type of person. In Philly, this last Mummers skit served as a sequin-donned reminder that despite all the talk, we are far from equal in a city that prides itself on being progressive. There’s just still too many who live here who miss the “Old Philadelphia.â€? The one that allegedly dressed unsuspecting Black children up to portray monkeys. Or the 2015 image of the white Mummer deďŹ ant in his wearing of Blackface despite it being pretty apparent that the use of face paint offended people in 2015. It’s why so many people jumped the gun with this skit, coincidentally, many of whom have vigorously defended how AfricanAmericans are portrayed in this city. Council president Darrell Clarke, referred to it ďŹ rst as racist, but then relented still calling the

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

performance “minstrelsy. Asa Khalif, who runs the Philadelphia chapter of Black Lives Matter – for better or worse – has been one of the most outspoken advocates on reform as it pertains to police treatment of Black Philly and has announced his candidacy for a City Council seat. This week, on his platform site, Asa4Council.com, he called for the city to end the Mummers, calling it, “decades of racist insults to our city’s People of Color and citizens of conscience. To me, it’s always been right up there with the now-defunct chicken wing eating, stripper-laden, early morning debacle that was Wing Bowl. I think in large part because every year the Mummers Parade is really an exercise in learning just how much the need for diversity and inclusion training in this city is paramount. But we also need to hold accountable the politicians, activists, journalists and others who are quick to pull race into the equation. Let’s try to leave the easy pull of the race card in 2018 and look to be a bit more strategic and overarching in our opinions in 2019. It’s just too easy to condemn something as racist or insensitive because it upsets our delicate sensibilities. Darrel Young did nothing wrong. Neither did the Finnegan’s New Year Brigade. But it’s their membership into a group that is a storied reminder of Philadelphia’s deep-rooted racist past and the undertones that are still ever-apparent in the present. Did I as a Black man think the performance was racist? No. I thought the premise lacked a true explanation, since I’m sure 99 percent (Jay-Z pun intended) of the people who saw it had no idea that it’s arguably now one of the most memorable cartoons by Inquirer cartoonist Signe Wilkinson. No one lost their mind when Wilkinson, a white woman, drew the cartoon and her publication published it, but the 3-D portrayal of two men of different races recreating the illustration rubs a lot of people the wrong way? It’s because it’s not about the skit. It’s the fact of what the Mummers represents to a Philadelphia trying to become more progressive. The Mummers Parade is an annual reminder that we still have a long way to go. That isn’t the best way to get Philadelphia in the right frame to kickstart the year with rosy outlook. Even if some literally try to paint it on their face. Q TWITTER: @SPRTSWTR

FACING THE FACTS IMAGES BY ANDREA CANTOR

On Jan. 8, Philly got a good look at the faces affected by a nearly three-week shutdown of the federal government. Independence Mall was mobbed by federal workers and politicians alike incensed that a Southern border wall matters more to the American president than the livelihoods of its people. PW senior staff writer Andrea Cantor spent Tuesday speaking with grown men and women unable to pay mortgages, forced to pull children out of daycare and beg banks to not damage their credit standing over a situation our of their control. Full coverage on the Federal Workers Rally, starts on page 11, but we thought it fair for this week's State of the City to offer a snapshot at the state of our nation. – KERITH GABRIEL | @SPRTSWTR

Arthur Baselice Jr. sits with an image of his son, Arthur III who took his own life after years of heinous sexual abuse at the hands of a Catholic priest.

Save your prayers Arthur Baselice Jr. wants justice for his late son, not more meaningless words from Pope Francis BY ANDREA CANTOR

P

ope Francis chastised American Bishops in a complete mishandling of sex abuse by the clergy in a letter penned earlier this month. “The Church’s credibility has been seriously undercut and diminished by these sins and crimes, but even more by the efforts made to deny or conceal them,â€? Francis wrote. “This has led to a growing sense of uncertainty, distrust and vulnerability among the faithful.â€? Many outlets and critics were quick to note Pope Francis excluded any mention of punishment for those guilty of molestation, including the 301 members of the clergy in Pennsylvania an explosive court ďŹ ling cited for more than 1,000 incidences of child abuse. Instead, the pope urged the church to internally strengthen and repair itself. “Let us try to break the vicious circle of recrimination, undercutting and discrediting, by avoiding gossip and slander in the pursuit of a path of prayerful and contrite acceptance of our limitations and sins,â€? Francis wrote. One of the people not buying into the words from the pope is Arthur Baselice Jr. He is a father who

-$18$5<

speaks on behalf of his son, Arthur III, silenced by a fatal heroin overdose in 2006 after years of mental anguish stemming from repeated clergy abuse. In the mid-1990s, Arthur III was sexually abused by two Franciscan clergyman at Archbishop Ryan High School in Northeast Philadelphia. The perpetrators included the principal Rev. Charles Newman and Brother Regis Howitz, then a maintenance worker at the school. Newman eventually resigned from his position after it came to light that he stole $1 million from the school and the Franciscan Order, a crime that would cost him four years in jail. His crimes of pedophilia, however, have never been served inside a cell. “[The] pope is just a puppet controlled by the curia. In reality, nothing in the church will change until the laws ... are changed,â€? Baselice said in a conversation with Philadelphia Weekly. “Can the pope conďŹ rm that the god he claims to represent is agreeing with his nonsense?â€? For Baselice, one of the laws that needs to be remedied is Pennsylvania’s statute of limitations, which robbed his son of any judicial recompense. Currently, the state law gives sex abuse victims – who are 18 or older during the time of the abuse – just two years to

ďŹ le a civil suit. Those younger have 12 years after they turn 18 to ďŹ le civil charges. The age cutoff to ďŹ le a criminal charge of child sexual abuse is 50. “It's all about due process. That's the argument, due process, right? But due process is a double-edged sword,â€? Baselice challenged. “So why is it that the accused have due process and the victims have been denied due process? When are the victims going to get due process?â€? Baselice believes a major roadblock in sexual abuse reform is Joe Scarnati, president pro tempore of the Pennsylvania State Senate. Scarnati has twice blocked bill passage that would allow older victims to sue their perpetrators. Baselice also noted that Megan Crompton, the wife of Scarnati’s chief of staff, Drew Compton serves as the vice president of government relations at Long, Nyquist & Associates, a lobbying ďŹ rm that represents the Catholic Church.

“They tortured him to friggin’ deathâ€? The ďŹ rst time the retired Philadelphia detective knew something had happened to his son was when Arthur III called him, saying he was being investigated by a man, named Jack Rossiter, of the FBI. Baselice called Rossiter, whose ďŹ rst name is actually Joe, and soon found out that he previously worked for the FBI. In actuality, he was an archdiocesan investigator. “He said, ‘get your son some help, he was abused by a couple of priests from the archdiocese,’â€? Baselice recalled. “He said, ‘get your son some help and I'll get the archdiocese to pay for it.’â€? Two years later, Arthur III at just 28, would be found dead in a Camden apartment. His death had arguable connections to his past sexual trauma. But Baselice afďŹ rmed that it was more than an arguable connection, it was apparent, as he claims it was Newman who introduced his son to drugs, giving him Oxycontin and other substances before sexual attacks. “He took his life, because they tortured him to friggin’ death,â€? he said. Baselice explained that since his son’s perpetrators were Franciscan, he was not eligible for any compensation associated with the ongoing child abuse investigations against accused Pennsylvania priests. However, it is a sum of money that he wouldn’t take even if eligible. “Who is this guy to tell me that

the misery is of the past, present and future? He is going to put a dollar value on my son's death and our misery? Bullshit, said Baselice, who now lives in a New Jersey suburb. “Is it going change the carnage that our lives have become, the misery? What's it going to change? No matter his personal situation, Baselice attested he stands in solidarity with the other victims and hopes the trials will bring, at the very least, justice to those who have gone for so long without it. “What I do for my son, I do for the other victims, said Baselice. “I'm not interested in this for myself, although I do have an agenda, I want these two guys who molested my son to be held accountable for their actions, and I want the other victims to have the same due process that we are all entitled to. This wish arrives on the heels of last month’s state Supreme Court ruling to conceal 11 of the priests’ names on the Grand Jury report. Released in August, the initial report revealed 270 of the priests’ names to the public. State Attorney General Josh Shapiro, a champion in the scandal’s unveiling, has criticized the decision to withhold the 11 names. “I have consistently fought for the release of the entire, unredacted Grand Jury report into widespread sexual abuse and cover up within the Pennsylvania Catholic Church, Shapiro said in Dec. 3 in a public statement. “Today’s Order allows predator priests to remain in the shadows and permits the Church to continue concealing their identities. Shapiro explained that while he is unable to release the names, the church still can. “While this Order bars me from releasing the names of these 11 petitioners, nothing in this Order prevents the Dioceses from sharing the shielded names with their parishioners and the public. I call on the Bishops to do so immediately, consistent with their recent calls for transparency. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the Franciscan order found both of Arthur III’s sexual abuse allegations credible. However to date, according to Baselice Jr., the only punitive action taken against Newman and Howitz was restriction to nonpublic ministry. “They are living the life of prayer and penitence, while I'm living a life of misery, said Baselice. Keepin’ it real BY KERITH GABRIEL

I

f you can’t beat em’, guilt em’. Some feel that’s the new mantra heading into 2019 for the collective that make up the fundraising arm for the School District of Philadelphia which sent out a letter over the holidays, aimed at city residents that beneďŹ t from the 10-year tax abatement program. The letter crafted by the The Fund for the School District of Philadelphia and signed by organization chairman Sheldon Bonovitz and Fund president and CEO Donna Frisby Greenwood, arrived in mailboxes of homes throughout the city just in time for the holiday giving season. It urges residents of either new or newly rehabbed homes to consider giving the rate their saving on paying taxes to the school district, piggybacking a controversial Dec. 4 report that claims the Philadelphia School District missed out on a whopping $62 million in direct taxpayer funding as a result of the abatement. The Dec. 7 letter from the Fund even provides a formula for residents to ďŹ gure out how much they’re saving in school taxes from the abatement. According to the letter, more than half of the approximate 1.3998 percent of the city’s property tax rate would have directly gone to fund schools to those that were exempt due to the abatement. The letter also states that about $48.3 million in revenue was lost from the 14,345 city properties that are listed with having an abatement. The packet even offered an envelope to consider donating all or portions of the difference. A response for comment from the Fund went unreturned at the time of this report, but last month Greenwood told Philly. com, that this targeted list of residents with abatements – supplied by City Councilwom-

Just in time for the holidays, the fundraising arm of Philadelphia’s school district sent targeted letters to city residents with tax abatements urging them to donate proceeds to the fund. However, some feel The Fund comes off a bit abrasive in its request. an Helen Gym, who has been outspoken in her efforts to end the program – is the perfect group to hit for a cash strapped district. "It’s an audience that makes sense for us, that certainly is invested in the city and should be asked,â€? Greenwood told Philly. com. “I talked to some other property owners and they said, ‘Well, no one’s ever asked me that,’ and I said, ‘Well, we’ll be asking.’â€? However, some residents that received the letter found its efforts and timing to be shaming those that purchased abated property. “I don’t know that I would’ve invested in this neighborhood without the abatement to be honest with you,â€? says Jeff DeCantrell, a UPS driver who recently purchased a new home in the city’s East Kensington section in 2010. I understand and sympathize with owners who have lived in this neighborhood longer and don’t have the adjustments I have, but this was and still is a section of the city that’s plagued by crime, drugs and needs the density to revitalize.â€? Inez Ruiz, a mother of two also from East Kensington echoed DeCantrell’s sentiments and noted that without the abatement being able to purchase her two bedroom, one bath rehab just off Frankford Avenue wouldn’t have been possible. “We may own a newer home, but we’re in the same boat; it’s not like I have all this money that I have saved because of the tax break,â€? Ruiz said. “I understand why they send it, they’re looking for money, I get that, I just thought the letter didn’t take into account that not everyone that can afford what these developers are charging for these homes these days have the means to go beyond, that’s what the abatement is so appealing. I’ll donate sure, but don’t suggest I do the math, ďŹ gure it out and send you a check, I’m just not OK with that.â€? Q

$+u out of his untimely death. Once that ďŹ rst wave of shock and sadness began to fade (slightly), I joined with Patti Brett – Philly's No. 1 Bowie Fan and owner of Doobies Bar at 22nd and Lombard streets. We pulled together a few like-minded friends and organized a series of events where Bowie fans could gather, share their love and loss and celebrate the man and his music. We wanted from the start to make the event a fundraiser for cancer research – and decided to embrace the Cancer Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia as the home of the Bowie Fund, and since our ďŹ rst year, we've raised over $23,000 and hope to increase that to $30,000 after this year's event is over.

Even in death, David Bowie will forever remain larger than life. Here’s how and why Philly pays tribute to the Starman.

“Ashes to Ashes DJ Robert Drake on keeping the spirit of the Starman alive with annual Philly Loves Bowie Week BY ANDREA CANTOR

T

he world was stunned when legendary singer and glam rock god David Bowie passed away on Jan. 10, 2016, after an 18-month battle with lung cancer. It seems Philadelphia took the death particularly hard, even creating an annual, inmemoriam Philly Loves Bowie Week. And it makes sense why a city with an ofďŹ cially designated Gayborhood would have such a profound love for the man, as both share an individualistic and unabashed mentality in a world afraid to express their true selves. Famously, in a 1976 interview with Playboy, Bowie said: "It's true – I am a bisexual. But I can't deny that I've used that fact very well. I suppose it's the best thing that ever happened to me.â€? Now in its third year, Philly Loves Bowie Week has continued to shine a bright and glittery light on the Starman. Since Jan. 4, a lineup of commemorative events and Bowie-themed activities has taken place all across the city, culminating in what’s being called A Snowy Bowie Skate at Blue Cross RiverRink

Winterfest on Jan. 13. Philadelphia Weekly connected with Philly Loves Bowie Week’s co-organizer, WXPN (88.5-FM) radio host and producer DJ Robert Drake, to ask about the late artist’s lasting signiďŹ cance, the rest of the week’s happenings and more.

What is the continuing impact of Bowie in Philly? The impact of David Bowie on Philadelphia – as in the world – is so hard to measure, as he touched so many people with his music, art and creativity. He always considered Philly a magical place and selected Philly to record his concert album DAVID LIVE. Then, he wanted to capture that magic once again and embrace the Philly soul as he ventured into that genre with Young Americans, which he recorded in Philly at the legendary Sigma Sound Studios. From that point forward, he always felt that Philly was a home away from home.

How did you come up with this idea? Sadly, the idea for Philly Loves Bowie week came

BOWIE ABOUNDS

There’s no shortage of Bowie-centric events going down heading into the weekend. Here’s four upcoming jawns to consider in this glorious week of the Starman. Third Annual Philly Loves Bowie Memorial What do colored chalk and David Bowie have in common? They’re both washed away by the tides of time (which, again, Bowie himself does not believe in because, as we’ve already said on numerous occasions, his species had transcended such constructs, though his human form obviously had not). Which is our way of saying that it’s important to pay tribute however you can, even if it’s in the form of a drawing that will disappear the first time it rains. | Thursday, Jan. 10. 3pm. A Night of Stardust Philly Loves Bowie Week continues! And this time, there’s no going back. Mostly because time – for us mortals, at least – runs in only a single direction, whereas for beings from Bowie’s dimension, time is more like a series of sheets or membranes, rippling in the cosmic winds, allowing him to move between worlds, timelines, showering his aural magic on all who he comes into contact with. | Friday, Jan. 11. 7pm. $20. Donny McCaslin and His Band You might not know it from the title or the picture or because you just don’t know any better (just kidding again ‌ mostly), but Mr. Donny McCaslin’s show is yet another entry in the Philly Loves Bowie Week extravaganza. McCaslin was the band leader on Bowie’s final album, “Blackstar,â€? and now he’s trading on that for his own studio offering. A Snowy Bowie Skate You’ll have to pay if you want to skate, but otherwise this final entry in the Philly Loves Bowie Week spectacular is free, free, free. Pay homage to the Starman one last time with face-painting, Bowie-themed cocktails and terrifying images of the horror movie “Labyrinthâ€? on the big screens. Huh? What do you mean “Labyrinthâ€? wasn’t a horror movie? Have you seen Bowie’s hair in that movie? | Sunday, Jan. 13. Noon. Free. Members of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture voice their displeasure with the ongoing government shutdown during a rally on Jan. 8 outside Independence Mall.

‘Enough is enough’ Going on three weeks without pay, federal workers are fed up with partial government shutdown BY ANDREA CANTOR

J

ohn Siciliano, 43, has worked at the Federal Detention Center for over 20 years as a correctional ofďŹ cer. One of the most dangerous federal jobs out there, the average retirement age for a CO is 50 in Pennsylvania, in part because of the risks. He is working there right now, but he isn’t getting paid due to the partial government shutdown since Dec. 22. “I can’t pay this mortgage payment, I’m not going to be able to pay next mortgage payment. We deal with Bank of America, and they are pretty much telling us that we are just another person who just walked off a job and that’s not the case,â€? said Si-

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

ciliano, a father of two. “I can’t get a second job, because I am mandated so I have to stay to work.â€? Siciliano held back tears at People's Plaza following a rally led by the American Federation of Government Employees on Tuesday. With Independence Hall as well as a currently understaffed and overworked Federal Detention Building serving as a backdrop on either side, Siciliano stood with his wife Victoria, a teacher in New Jersey, and told their plight to state Sen. Vincent Hughes, one of a handful of elected ofďŹ cials who spoke at the rally. “They are victims of a political decision, largely emanating out of the White House, and his unwillingness as human

beings, as very real people,â€? said Hughes told Philadelphia Weekly in reference to the Sicilianos. “They have done everything right, they put in the hours, they go to work, and they are getting screwed.â€? The main “political decisionâ€? at the heart of the government shutdown is the U.S.-Mexican border wall that President Donald Trump wants to build with $5.7 billion of taxpayer money. The House passed a bill, which rejects the wall funding, to reopen the government on Jan. 4, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has refused to bring a funding bill to the Senate oor. There are approximately 800,000 federal employees affected by the current government shutdown, 380,000

of them are furloughed, meaning unpaid absence, and 420,000 of them are expected to work without pay any time soon, according to Market Watch. “It’s not just the hundreds of thousands that are federal workers, it’s also the contractors. The millions of contractors that work for the federal government, and they are not going to get back pay,â€? reminded newly sworn-in U.S. Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon. “The House has already passed legislation, the same legislation as the Senate, so this should be over as soon as the president stops having his temper tantrum.â€? This isn’t the ďŹ rst shutdown Siciliano said he has endured during his time as a federal worker, but it is the longest. Even with retroactive pay, the mounting bank fees, inevitable taxes, credit damage, and new reality of truly living paycheck to paycheck, the Sicilianos say the damage has already been done. “There are things that you can’t ďŹ x afterward, I can’t ďŹ x my credit score after it’s already ruined,â€? said Victoria Siciliano, 40. “I worked really hard for that, and that’s what is so heartbreaking. I make my ďŹ nancial decisions, who is going to say that you are going to make my ďŹ nancial decisions for me?â€? The rally was ďŹ lled with similar sentiments of crippling fears, all voiced by federal workers from various departments. Joseph Rush, a furloughed worker with the United States Department of Agriculture, had to pull his 5-yearold son out of daycare. As of now, Rush is relying on his wife’s paycheck, who serves as a waitress. “This is being put on us. They said we could make adjustments, but that’s not the reality for most of us,â€? said Rush, 32, who resides in Quakertown. “I tried working with my mortgage company, they won’t work with me.â€? U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick told PW he is taking a stand against the shutdown by refusing pay, and he advised other members of Congress to follow suit. “Leadership starts at home, and every single member of Congress ought not to get paid,â€? said the Republican congressman representing Bucks County. “They got to give their money back to the U.S. Treasury, so we can feel what [the federal workers] feel. Sometimes that changes your perspective.â€? Three U.S. Democrat representatives from Pennsylvania have already joined Fitzpatrick in refusing pay, including Scanlon, Dwight Evans of Philadelphia, who was also a speaker at the rally, and Chrissy Houlahan of Chester County. As a former FBI agent, Fitzpatrick remembered the anxiety of living through a government shutdown and having others decide who were “essential and nonessential employeesâ€? of an agency comprised of workers who ensure the nation’s safety. The two-term congressman explained that to prevent a similar situation in the future, an emphasis needs to be placed on long-term budgets and non-budgetary issues should not be a factored into government shutdowns. “People are taking a very sensitive issue, which is immigration reform, which is something that we need a bipartisan consensus on, and are using it as a political football which is unacceptable,â€? Fitzpatrick continued. “This is not the way to run the government of our country.â€?Q TWITTER: @ANDREAJCANTOR

The Upper Darby hip-hop producer duo known as Benny X ( BNYXÂŽ) and BEAUTIFULMVN, have worked with some of the most notable up-and-coming artists both locally and internationally.

Pounding the pavement to make the beat Brother producers BNYXÂŽ and BEAUTIFULMVN on playing the music game BY ANDREA CANTOR

I

t is common knowledge that the music industry is a cut-throat industry for performers. But the same holds true for those behind the scene, the producers who craft and polish the sound. Luckily for brother producers BNYXÂŽ and BEAUTIFULMVN, the duo from Upper Darby has each other to brave the beats and tracks of their dog-eat-dog ďŹ eld. BNYXÂŽ, pronounced Benny X, works with House of 99, a label that includes artist-producer Charlie Heat. At 23 years old, BNYXÂŽ has already worked with the likes of Dougie F, Tdot Illdude, Bri Steves and Ty Dolla $ign. His 19-yearold brother, BEAUTIFULMVN, who also goes by the name of James, is not signed with a label

-$18$5<

but has teamed with artists, such as Heat, Lil Baby and G Herbo. BNYXÂŽ and BEAUTIFULMVN have made independent strides in the industry, however, as they struggle to make their marks, they prefer to do it together with their complementary attributes. BEAUTIFULMVN starts many of their collaborations with a loop and melody, plus a whole lot of charisma. More grounded, BNYXÂŽ ďŹ nesses the concepts, turning them into polished beats. Collaborating on a number of projects, the two have already produced a track, “Live Up to the Hype,â€? for Shy Glizzy. In addition to production, the pair also writes songs and is excited about their latest creative endeavors with up-and-comer Andrea Valle, a Philly hip-hop artist.

In addition to conducive work habits that promote optimum creative steam, BNYXÂŽ and BEAUTIFULMVN value the safe haven that a sibling dynamic can bring to the professional space. Albeit, there are times when the two will work from separate rooms, at the end of the day, they are able to work through projects with the utmost honesty and produce their best work. “I'll be in the studio with someone that's not James, and sometimes I'd be scared to express my opinion, even though sometimes that's what you have to do to earn respect,â€? explained BNYXÂŽ. “The music industry is so tricky because you don't know who has the big ego, you don't know who's going to get hurt by what ‌ so when you're scared to say something it's the worst feeling.â€?

But egos are just one of the many pitfalls the brothers said they have to traverse in the music industry. Another is the oversaturation in the production industry as a result of the upswing in technology. “Nowadays in the music industry, the way that people see producers and our music and our creations, it’s kind of like candy to them,â€? said BEAUTIFULMVN. “It’s because it is so accessible and everybody is doing the same thing.â€? Like many others, the siblings’ ďŹ rst introduction to production started when BNYXÂŽ received a laptop during his senior year at Upper Darby High School. But unlike many others who only mess around with production software on their computers, they both had been classically trained in music, mainly in the piano. Even more so, music is in their blood, literally the reason for their existence. Their father, a Haitian immigrant, came to America on a visa to perform in a national gospel tour as a singer and guitarist. After moving to the states, he then met his soon-to-be wife, also an immigrant from Haiti. Imbuing passion and love into their music learned from their father, the brothers moved toward creating music instead of playing it. Praising the “controlâ€? they can have over their craft, the siblings are preparing to take control over their careers by moving to to Los Angeles. “The thing is with us staying in Philly right now, there's not a lot going on. Nobody's really looking out for anybody, especially when you're trying to make it in the place that you're from,â€? said BEAUTIFULMVN. “People are going to make you wait until you pass this certain threshold, this imaginary threshold, before they’re going to say, ‘Oh yeah, now I like what you're doing.’â€? Ready to leave their old neighborhood behind, the two are seasoned for the West Coast, a place they have been to a handful of times this past year. A fan of hit songwriter-producer Max Martin, BNYXÂŽ hopes to one day trade in hip-hop beats for pop ones, believing there is more freedom, both artistically and ďŹ nancially, that pop can afford for a young producer. Through Being Cool EMO NIGHT

Was the emo scene, like, way bigger in Philly than we remember? Sure, The Used and Saves The Day were big bands in the way back when (along with black bangs and pants that were at least two sizes too tight), but the sudden ubiquity of emo nights is truly startling. LaxCon 2019 We’re not usually so bro-y, but desperate times call for desperate measures. $3 citywides!? What the hell has this place come to? With $3 citywides you could, hypothetically speaking, get hammered for less than $10. And no, of course we’re not encouraging you to do that, though if you do you should absolutely be careful and make sure you have your transportation home lined up so you won’t even be tempted to drive. What do you mean “Labyrinth wasn’t a horror movie? Have you seen Bowie’s hair in that movie? | Noon. Free. Blue Cross RiverRink, 101 S. I

’m a woman in an open relationship of four years. I adore my partner. When we were ďŹ rst dating, it was casual and there were no ground rules. During that time, I slept with a guy without condoms after he cornered me in a motel room. One of the biggest rules in my current relationship is to use condoms with other partners. My current partner has made it clear that he would consider exchanging uids with someone else cheating. I’m worried he’ll somehow ďŹ nd out about that night in the motel room, and I feel bad keeping it a secret. If I tell him, there’s a chance that our relationship will end and I’ll be living in my car. What should I do? – Burdensome Unbearable Guilt Sucks This thing happened – or this thing was done to you – before you made a commitment to your current partner, BUGS, and before ground rules were established. I’m assuming you got tested at some point over the last four years; failing that, I’m assuming neither of you has developed symptoms of an STI over the last four years. (And condoms don’t protect us from all the STIs out there, so even if you did come down with something, your partner could have passed it to you.) So cut yourself some slack, BUGS: You had unprotected sex under a sadly common form of duress. Fearing something much worse, you “agreedâ€? to unprotected sex – you agreed but didn’t freely consent to unprotected sex. Too many men don’t understand that kind of fear or the de-escalation techniques women are forced to employ when they ďŹ nd themselves cornered by threatening men – de-escalation techniques that can include “agreeingâ€? to but not freely consenting to sex, unprotected or otherwise. You’re under no obligation to tell your current partner about that night, as it took place before you established your ground rules, so it’s not really any of his fucking business. And if home-

I’m a man in love with a woman half my age. We met shortly after I had to leave the city I was living in to escape a toxic relationship. I know this girl has feelings for me. My gut screams it. We also share a strange connection. It’s something I know she feels. She simply can’t help being tied to the energy I’m feeling. A while back, I hurt her. Unintentionally, but it hurt just the same. I was still not over my ex and very leery of ever experiencing that kind of pain in my heart again. The problem now is that this young woman won’t acknowledge her feelings for me. She swears she never had feelings for me. We found ourselves alone one day, and her actions were clearly indicating that she wanted to have sex with me but her words prevented me from taking the opportunity. How can I reach this girl? She knows I love her. I know I’m not wrong. She wants what I want. This love is not something I chose and I’m beginning to resent it. – In Lasting Love You are wrong. She does not want what you want. Your gut is lying to you. She is not in love with you. You do not share a connection. You need to listen to her words. She is not tied to the “energyâ€? you are feeling. You have got to stop thinking with your dick. She was probably scared out of her wits when you managed to â€œďŹ ndâ€? her alone. You cannot reach this woman. She can sense your resentment and she’s afraid of you. In all honesty, ILL, I’m afraid of you. Just as this poor woman most likely fears becoming one of the many women murdered every year by men they’ve rejected, I fear being the messenger who got shot. But you asked for my advice, ILL, and here it is: Get into therapy. You need help. And my advice for her, if she sees this, is to do whatever you must to protect yourself – up to and including moving away. Q
