ou know those things you overhear or read that just leaves you shaking your head at the stupidity of it all or at the fact that you even have to recognize it as something valid in your already overwhelmed life you have to consider? Yeah, I had two of those just last week. The ďŹ rst of the pair I read, and it was the upcoming brieďŹ ng from the Centers for Disease Control on the what to do in the threat of a nuclear attack. The Jan. 16 brieďŹ ng comes in the aftermath (no pun intended) of a Donald Trump tweet comparing the size of his nuclear button to that of North Korea’s Kim Jong Un; all of this after the Pan-PaciďŹ c dictator said that his own nuclear button sits on his desk at all times. That wasn’t the shocker. The shocker was that in showing that this shit isn’t a who has the biggest button contest, the CDC used an image of a mushroom cloud decimating everything. In the release it sent out, they pretty much said that if it were to happen, there’s virtually no time before we all get vaporized. “While a nuclear detonation is unlikely, it would have devastating results and there would be limited time to take critical protection steps. Despite the fear surrounding such an event, planning and preparation can lessen deaths and illness,â€? the post reads. It also added that if in fact we do somehow survive that most of us don’t know that sheltering in place for at least 24 hours is “crucial to saving lives and reducing exposure to radiation.â€? Wanting to see just how prepared we were
locally considering we haven’t had to think about a legit nuclear threat since the Cold War-era, I contacted the local ofďŹ ces of the CDC and the Environmental Protection Agency, both of which I’m still waiting to hear back from. I can’t conďŹ rm, but I feel like the contact at the EPA was secretly chuckling at the fact that a reporter was asking questions about EPA response times to a nuclear attack. It’s no laughing matter, but the fact that a tweet could bring us to the brink of war proves that we live in a really weird ass time. Moving on, the second thing is pretty funny to watch. It’s been the perfect storm (pun deďŹ nitely intended) of having a holiday week and a crazy winter storm envelope the city and its effect on trash pickup. Many neighborhoods, including mine in East Kensington are going on nearly two weeks since there has been a garbage pickup making streets lined with trash bins and dried out holiday trees that have been blowing trash around for about the same amount of time. The funny part is watching the passive-aggressive looks from neighbors who took the time to Google when the city would pick up trash – delayed due to many of those same trucks utilized as plows for the storm – as they have to pick-up twoweek-old trash strewn across the block many times courtesy of their next door neighbor. Some say move the trash back off the street until trash day, while offenders are staying lazy in leaving those old Christmas boxes out on the street. The sadist in me loved this so much I took to Twitter to comment, but it appears I am the only one that shares in how uncomfortable this has made neighborhood residents because the city was unable to do its job. When I made a resolution to laugh more in 2018, this isn’t exactly what I had in mind. Q TWITTER: @SPRTSWTR

Furious George Insensitive H&M “coolest monkeyad nearly sparks Black Lives Matter protest in Philadelphia BY KERITH GABRIEL
L
et’s just say it was not a good look. Hundreds of people across the country and scores of people in Philadelphia took to social media late Sunday night incensed courtesy of what was deemed a racially insensitive advertisement by popular clothing brand, H&M. Headquartered in Sweden, H&M’s American and European online catalog featured a black boy modeling a green sweatshirt that read, “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle.â€? The post sparked a ďŹ ery debate among many, most notably Asa Khalif, president of the Pennsylvania chapter of Black Lives Matter, who told PW the post got many members of his organization so hot, there was an initial plan to protest Monday at the store’s Chestnut Street location, but that the “vanâ€? was halted only after H&M issued a mea culpa. PW reached out to H&M’s worldwide and U.S.-based media relations team for comment, the latter stating that in addition to the removal of the item from all online channels, the sweatshirt will no longer be available for

purchase in the United States. Later that day, the company decided to pull the hoodie worldwide. H&M also added the following: “We sincerely apologize for offending people with this image of a printed hooded top. We believe in diversity and inclusion in all that we do and will be reviewing all our internal policies accordingly to avoid any future issues. Insensitive posts are becoming a more frequent occurence, the most recent of major mistakes being Pepsi Cola’s insensitive television spot just last year featuring Kendall Jenner. In October, Dove had to issue a massive “my bad after a post depicted a black woman who appeared to turn white after using body wash. It’s a trend that Khalif noted poses a bigger issue than this goaround of a black kid in a monkey sweatshirt. “H&M has proven once again... not having black people at the table with a voice and the power to make decisions regarding diversity in mainstream advertising is a major fail, he said via statement to PW. “In 2018, racism is alive and well [and] I’m extremely disappointed in H&M. They must make sure this never happens again. Before it was taken down altogether, H&M took steps to correct itself early Monday morning. The offending sweatshirt was the only one that didn’t feature with a model when it sat alongside comparable sweatshirts on the site. But by noon, the sweatshirt was no longer featured on the U.S. website. For those inquiring how a parent could allow their child to wear something potentially racist, it was noted that many times posts feature stock images of models that advertisers will use and Photoshop their design on the model. No word on if this was an original shoot or if H&M’s creative team used stock photography to model the shirt, and in its response, H&M did not add any insight. Still, with the many channels these things must go through before they see the light of the consumer, H&M is now feeling the effect of a potential loss of sales in its U.S. market for letting this one slip through the cracks. Thumbs down Days of a bone-chilling deep freeze kept the city mostly indoors last week. Worse, the snowfall did not leave Philly aglow with velvet night skies and children playing in the streets. It was the icy, blinding kind of snow that turned everything into a frozen tundra — and we’re just glad it’s over. As we go to print, the temperature is creeping up to (gasp!) 40 degrees, and is expected to hit the 50s (T-shirt weather) this weekend. Q
Thumbs up Somehow, this pungent story about garbage from the Willamette Week in Portland, Oregon, began making the rounds on social media — despite the fact that it’s 16 years old. Can you sift through people’s trash once it’s on the curb? Apparently, back in 2002, local mayor, police and judges wanted to make a point that it was fair game. So some reporters decided to dig through all of their trash. Laugh-out-loud accountability ensues. Sixteen years old or not, the fact that it made the rounds again goes to show that old-fashioned, dumpster-diving journalism never goes rancid. Long live the alt-weekly! Q

Could Philly be ďŹ rst U.S. city with a safe injection Happy birthday, JNA! facility? According to a report by WHYY News, top city officials are advocating for Philly to make history. For those who have been living under a rock, a brief definition: safe injection sites are more than just a place for opioid users to. In practice, they also offer all-hours access to social services and detox treatment options. Love it or hate it, a Philly SIF still is in the works, but there are a number of hurdles that could still halt it from becoming a reality — including pushback from community leaders and police:
JNA Institute of Culinary Arts, the little South Philly staple that’s graduated some of the best chefs in the region turns 30 this year. MUSIC After four albums together, True Widow has been referred to as everything from doom rock to “stone-gaze. But beyond labels, I’m curious about your process. How does a song reach completion for the three of you? What is the process of writing lyrics like? Most times we’ll play through songs, making tweaks here or there. Then it’s ready for [our producer] Matt P. and the Echo Lab. Most of the lyrics are written once we’re in the studio. Everyone chips in a bit if needed, but that rests primarily on whoever is doing most of the singing.
What are you listening to or reading now that’s inspiring you? I’d love to know any bands or artists that are a driving influence right now. I’ve been reading Quadrivium again, along with some Charles Burns, and watching old westerns and bad Sci-Fi. IMAGE COURTESY: TRUE WIDOW
With a pulsing guitar and esoteric lyrics to boot, the Lone Star state’s True Widow makes a return to Fishtown’s Johnny Brenda’s on Jan. 11.

We’ve been pretty fortunate to have come up with what I feel are some great titles. We really liked using a single word for the third album, so we used that idea for the latest. It works on multiple levels, which is always great.

rue Widow’s latest album, Avvolgere (the Italian word for “wrap), feels like listening to the dull drone of your own blood pumping through your veins. The stoned-out serene guitar and low vocals of this Dallas trio recall long desert landscapes at night – dark skies, deep stars, strange predators in the arid mountains.

The band, made up of guitarist D.H. Phillips, bassist Nikki Cage, and drummer Timothy “Slim Starks, alternates between male and female vocals - a switch-up that adds further dimension to esoteric lyrics, and coded song titles. In a world of too-easily digestible music, True Widow is a dark cerebral puzzle, both lighting and obscuring human nature through deep lyrics, and pulsing guitar. I caught up with Slim ahead of the band’s return to Johnny Brenda’s on Thursday, January 11th, to talk about True Widow’s close ties to Philadelphia, the puzzle of their latest album title, and who is inspiring the band right now.
First, welcome back to Philly. Everyone I know is always excited when you’re in town. How did the band end up with such a

strong relationship to Philadelphia & Johnny Brenda’s? We’ve always loved Philadelphia. We fell into a great group of people when we started coming through [on tour]. After that, we began bonding with several local bands. Having Relapse Records put our last two albums out has helped some I’m sure. We killed a fair amount of downtime at Johnny Brenda’s before we ever played there. I even had some friends throw me a birthday party there a few years back.
What kind of set list can we expect for this show? Any teasers? We’ve been trying to play a few songs from each album every show but it can get tricky ďŹ guring out what ďŹ ts and feels right on any given night.
You’re still being mysterious again. Ha. I know this is every artist’s least favorite question, but what are you working on next? Oh, you know, things and stuff. Packing for tour next week. MUSIC Do you ever wonder that – in its universality – there is a pulling away from genuine ethnography or the nuances of indigenous sound? Or is that your intention? No. No. We shall hold onto the universality. I want to preserve the traditions – you can’t move ahead otherwise – but that doesn’t mean that you have to play these songs in the same style as Cachao or our grandfathers. You can add a section using hip hop or electronic instruments. What is most important is the concept and ow of the music. I am not talking about popular music or reggaeton. I am talking about Afro-Cuban jazz and its twists and maintaining its Cubanity.
Cubanity? I want that on a t-shirt. Are you a fan of AfroCuban contemporary music? Well (laughs) most of it still takes from the Afro-Cuban jazz of the 40s. They are mixing it with electronic music but it’s still the same basic cell – the same set of bars. That’s how the younger musicians reach out to new audiences. My role is more preservation-al than that. But my arrangements are more contemporary while preserving the feel of the past. That’s why I record – still – some of the classics along with my own songs.
The culture survives anything and everything. Including the Russians and 1959. We survived. We will always survive. We have the music. We have the most beautiful women. We have the best rum and cigars in the world.
You have lived in London and Mexico. Does that filter into your sound? IMAGE COURTESY: RACHEL GOLDMAN
Juan de Marcos’ dishes on his longevity and his legendary sound arriving this week inside the Merriam.
All-star sound The heavenly sounds of Havana head to Philly with Juan de Marcos and his Afro-Cuban All Stars BY A.D. AMOROSI
E
ver since the twist on traditionalism that was Juan de Marcos’ 1978 folk-punk band, Sierra Maestra, the Havana-born bandleader, arranger and multi-instrumentalist has been at the forefront of sensuous, smart Cuban music. His sound will be on display Jan. 12 at the Merriam Theater when de Marcos brings his Afro-Cuban All Stars to the stage. One way of proving how prominent he is within the Cuban music continuum – at least to the uninitiated – is by knowing the Ry Cooder-produced Buena Vista Social Club and its offshoot solo affairs such as RubÊn Gonzålez’s fame stemmed from de Marcos’ own curated hometown 80s ensemble, the Afro-Cuban All Stars. The BV Social Club was as much de Marcos’ as it was Cooder’s creation as one begat the other. If it’s Cuban classicism, de Marcos damn near started and built

the ship and continues to oat it on calm gorgeous waters. I spoke with de Marcos in Maryland during a during stop and he was charming and funny.
You make some gorgeous music. Do you believe that all of your bands maintained the punk rock ethos from here you started?
I am trying to bring fresh vision but I don’t believe it has anything to do with my homes. I am the same guy with the same ears no matter where I live. Your culture is inside of you. Celia Cruz and Paquito d’Rivera lived away from Cuba for years yet they were no less Cuban than if they had stayed in downtown Havana their entire lives. It is as if they’re still playing dominoes and drinking coffee at home.
You have returned to Cuba since it has become free. Do you worry about its commercialization? Are you afraid it could become homogenized or Americanized?
Yes. Promoting Cuban music above all else. With that everything I do is one band. That ďŹ rst band you mentioned was another generation and worked through the early 2000s. They may have different musicians but the messages are the same. I also wish to show off the diversity of Cuban music exposing it all. I would argue that Cuban music is perhaps the most inuential style of music in the world. At least that’s what I wish to present in our shows.
I am not‌well‌. Yes I am a little bit afraid. I am going to be honest. In the way we go commercial – yes there is a risk that we can lose our true spirit. However I know what conditions used to be and witnessed what we have gone through in the past and watched and listened to how we held onto our spirit our heritage in good times and bad times. You know it was once forbidden for us to play the conga. Illegal up until 1944. They thought that playing the drum with the hand was too primitive. But when the conga became an international instrument – as Cuban music became popular for its signatures like electric guitar was in rock and roll – that shifted. There is always risk. The main risk comes from inside. Laziness. Homogenization may stem from the fact that this generation does not read books that they only concentrate on their cell phones and forget about great Cuban literature. Yet I am optimistic. I think we can maintain our culture. We did it before and it is absurd to believe that we could not do it again. We are a young country – 400 years of history – we can hold our own. Q
This is not a personal thing for you is it? It is bigger than you.

I don’t know about the punk thing of which you speak (laughs). And most of the Buena Vista guys are now gone. But yes. All things stem from that ďŹ rst band of neo-traditionalists which in fact for me, started with the music of my father (Marcos GonzĂĄlez Mauriz a vocalist with bandleader Arsenio RodrĂguez). I am always pretty much working on the same thing.
So fans should consider this a continuum then.
Exactly. I am merely an ambassador for the culture. A conduit. This is my mission.

FOOD What would you tell the person who is on the fence about coming to this event?
What would you recommend for hardcore beer drinkers?
It’s a fun event in a great venue, a large venue. It’s well-run. You pay one price and then you’re able to go around and sample as many of the 350 beers as you like. There’s a lot of fun vendors to occupy your time. We have a band called The Lava Game; they put on an incredible show. They actually do the whole tour with us for the ďŹ ve cities; they get the crowd moving and do a heck of a job.
We have Early Admission, which allows people to get in an hour early [at 7pm], and get ďŹ rst access to the most exclusive taps during that hour. They get the ďŹ rst crack at them.
How many people do you usually get at these festivals?
First of all, there’s a designated driver option for the person who doesn’t drink. If you’re just not much of a beer drinker, there’s ciders, there’s mead, there’s things to try that aren’t just beer. And there’s so many different styles of lighter types of beers – we can ďŹ nd something for everyone. That’s what is great about it. You don’t have to plop down $15.99 for a six-pack of beer you’ve never tried before. That’s one of the neat things about a beerfest. Go around, and try it. You don’t like it? Dump it. Find something you love. Then go buy it.
Philadelphia was 6,500 last year.
What numbers are you expecting for this year? I don’t expect to do more this year, because the Eagles game being announced on our Saturday hurts the turnout. IMAGE: FLICKR
With more than 300 beers to sample, the Pennsylvania Convention Center is set And what’s the the purpose of the festival being two days? Why did you think it needed to be that to be a celebration of all things beer with the Big Philly Beerfest. long?
Suds up!
Two days, 350 craft beers on tap highlight the fourth annual Big Philly Beerfest BY ANDREA CANTOR
Beer drinkers, get your sampling mugs ready. With 350 craft beers at your disposal, the fourth annual Big Philly Beerfest will take over the Convention Center on Jan. 12-13 from 8-11:30pm. Whether you come in after a stressful day of work on Friday, or celebrate the Eagles playoffs with large screen TVs on Saturday, the festival will be sure to indulge all of your beer senses. The two-day event beneďŹ ts Animal Rescue Partners, the nonproďŹ t organization with a mission to assist city shelters in humanely caring for homeless and abandoned animals. Ahead of the event, PW caught up with selfproclaimed “HopHeadâ€? Craig Johnson, who produces the event and was eager to pour on about what you can expect. 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20
The way convention centers work is you’re getting it for the weekend anyway, whether you’re going to use it or not. You’re paying so much money for it and the time to set up. It’s easy to do the Friday, and it just gives you another option for people that are working one night and not the other. It gives you an option for a bad weather one night. It gives you an option for like this weekend, something comes up such as the Eagles game on Saturday, “well I’m going to switch, and go to the beerfest on Friday.â€? So that’s the beneďŹ t.
How many breweries will be represented at the beerfest? There’s over 120 breweries.
And are those all national or are there any international breweries? No, we stay American craft. Most of them are regional or national craft. The idea is to get as many locals as possible, then the regional and the national guys that may not have as much of a presence in Philadelphia.
Your Big Beerfests are in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia — so what makes this city stand out from the others? What do you think of the Philly beer scene? I think the Philly Beer Week people have done an incredible job. We worked with them in the past. Philly has had amazing access to craft beer. Everyone wants to be in Philly, even if they’re not on the East Coast. And so there’s a lot of craft breweries available, which makes it crowded, but which also makes it good to go to a beerfest, because you can try some of the million things that are up on the wall.
What would you say to those who aren’t the biggest beer drinkers. Is there still a reason for them to want to come out?
It goes without saying that people will be drinking a lot. Even though it’s more of a tasting, have you ever run into any troubles with extremely inebriated people? It’s a ďŹ ve-ounce sampling mug that they get. We have food trucks, we actually pay a lot of money to the building to have local food trucks instead of concession food. We have plenty of security and staff. We have done this for a long time so we know when to cut people off, and how to handle the situation. So we really never had any issues in the 11 years we’ve been doing this.
What is your main demographic for these events? We get a pretty wide range, but our average is 33. It’s surprisingly, to most people anyway, it’s a surprising number of women. We’re about 45 to 47 percent female, and that stays pretty steady over every city. We’ve had groups of people in their 70s wearing “Drunk One, “Drunk Two, “Drunk Three T-shirts. We get a wide range of people making it a reunion type thing, groups of people, dates, and the like.
Since this is your fourth time at the beerfest in Philly, is there anything you are personally excited for this year? Are there any new features? We have what is called “Connoisseur, which is a VIP level ticket that includes foods from the restaurants in Reading Terminal. We moved the “Connoisseur reception out in the foyer that overlooks 12th Street. That’s going to be kind of cool with the cars going up and down the whole time. LGBT ever, he absolutely understands how far America still has to go with issues and makes a point to discuss social justice not only in his sets but on his social media channels as well. “It’s actually very important to me. America’s still very puritanical in some of the ways we view topics sex and sexuality, and I really think we’re all worse off for it,â€? Young-White said. “The urge to push the concept of sex and sexuality into the fringes of the human experience is so bizarre to me. But you can’t really blame people because where are we supposed to learn otherwise, you know? I went to Catholic schools my entire life and never had anything close to a cis heterosexual sexual education let alone a queer one. Everything I learned was trial and error or the internet or Talk Sex with Sue Johanson.â€? Young-White is a part of a movement of innovative young artists and comedians who are normalizing queerness and centering the experiences of people of color. Despite a hostile political climate, we’re starting to see historically underrepresented groups reaching mainstream success. Expect to see Young-White to that roundup, considering his proďŹ le has skyrocketed in the last year. “I accomplished a lot in 2017 that I’d dreamt of: a late night set, TV writing gig, a speaking movie role,â€? he says, when asked about the glow up. “Right now, I’m mostly just focused on building on everything I’ve already set in motion and starting to move forward on some of my own projects. Eventually though, I wanna reboot Meerkat Manor.â€?
Jaboukie Young-White was named one of the 20 Comedians You Should Know. You can meet him on Jan. 11 at Good Good Comedy Theater.
AAlreadyqueer perspective crushing the comedy game, Jaboukie Young-White’s next stop is Chinatown’s Good Good Comedy Theater BY TIMAREE SCHMIT
W
hen comedian Jaboukie Young-White recently appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, he included a bit about how he’s an awkward irt. Part of the issue, he says, is that he’s not read as queer by most people who have just met him. “I’ve been told that I come across as ‘masc,’ and if you don’t know what that means, that’s basically just gay for ‘*giggle* I’m not like other girls.’â€? Given the majority of comics talk about dating, up and coming star Young-White didn’t â€œďŹ nd any extra signiďŹ cance in talking about my love life.â€? For LGBT audience members, however, the representation is a game changer.

The stand up, who was named in Rolling Stone’s 25 under 25 and Vulture’s 20 Comedians You Should Know says, “it’s another part of my experience, so if I ďŹ nd something funny about it, I’m going to at least try it on stage.â€? Next stage on the docket for Young-White? You guessed it: Philly as the headliner at Good Good Comedy Theater on Jan. 13. “After the Fallon set, I had a lot of queer people message me about how much it meant to see a queer perspective on late night TV. Then I realized it is actually still kind of a big deal.â€? Perhaps Young-White didn’t realize audiences’ hunger for diversity in comedy because he got his start performing around Chicago’s notoriously gay-friendly Boystown/ Wrigleyville scene, then moved on to the epicenter of all things gay with stints in Los Angeles and New York. How-
“America’s still very puritanical in some of the ways we view topics sex and sexuality, and I really think we’re all worse off for it. The urge to push the concept of sex and sexuality into the fringes of the human experience is so bizarre to me. – COMEDIAN JABOUKIE YOUNG-WHITE Asked about the folks who got him this momentum, Young-White rattles off an incredible list of inspirations and comics who welcomed him into the Chicago and Brooklyn scenes. “There are so many people who have helped me get this far that it’d almost be impossible to thank everyone.â€? He adds, “The person who really gave me my ďŹ rst push into the world of stand-up was Kevin Bozeman, a Chicago comic who teaches a stand-up class at DePaul. Every class was basically like an open mic for 20 of your attentive peers, which is way better than performing for four embittered strangers in the back of bar (which is most open mics). At the end of that class, we did a showcase at Zanies that really gave me the ‘Oh, I can actually do this’ feeling.â€? He also credits his brother Javaughn (@jyoungwhite) who “tweeted some of my Instagram posts that went viral last year and pretty much launched my career.â€? For Young-White, this will be his ďŹ rst time in the City of Brotherly Love. What does he expect? “I’ve never been,â€? he says, “but I kind of feel like it’s going to be the Chicago of the east. [Plus], I saw a viral Twitter video of a guy riding a dogsled down the sidewalk and that’s really backing up my Chicago theory.â€? Q Jaboukie Young-White | Jan. 13. 7pm. Hacking restaurant week Five pointers for Philly’s supposedly budgetfriendly dining deal BY MAX MARIN
C
enter City Restaurant Week is a steal for boulevardiers who already spend gobs of their salaries on Philly’s starstudded food scene. For the rest, it’s still a paycheck vacuum. Organized by the Center City District, the biannual, weeklong restaurant blitz (Jan. 14 - 26) features more than 100 downtown restaurants offering three-course meals at a ďŹ xed price. Lunch is $20 per head. Dinner, $35. That’s not including beverages, coffee, taxes or tip. Restaurant week dinner means being prepared to throw down $45 per person — bare minimum. But for the crowd looking to ball out on a modest budget, here are a few tips:
Scope the menus you definitely couldn’t afford otherwise. As food critic after food critic has pointed out, restaurant week deals may be the same price, but they’re not all created equally. For the $35 three-course dinner, you could ďŹ nd an appetizer, entree and dessert for at or around the same price. Plenty of these joints offer $15-$20 entrees as well as reasonably priced appetizers and desserts. So take a few minutes and scope the pricier spots you’ve always heard about but knew you couldn’t afford to dine at and leave with a full stomach. It doesn’t even have to be some exclusive boutique venue. Have you always wanted Fogo De Chao’s endless Brazilian meat feast, which normally costs upwards of $55 a head? Restaurant week is the time to do it up. Just remember to book a reservation in advance, especially if you’re looking at one of the trendier restaurants on the list.
Here are all of the BYOB joints participating in restaurant week. You’re welcome. Audrey Claire | 276 S. 20th St. Dinner. Entree | 1608 South St. Dinner. Mercato | 1216 Spruce St. Dinner. Melograno | 2012 Sansom St. Dinner. Pumpkin | 1713 South St. Dinner. Porcini | 2048 Sansom St. Dinner. Russet | 1521 Spruce St. Dinner.

Know your budget, check the menus, and make reservations in advance before hitting restaurant week. Use the parking discount. Alternatively, scrap your car for parts and take public transit. Obviously, the Center City District is hoping to draw the car-driving commuter foodies to restaurant week with a parking deal. If for “some reasonâ€? you’re terriďŹ ed of taking the bus or train, you can park for $9 (or less) at select Philadelphia Parking Association and Philadelphia Parking Authority garages. Just be sure to pick up a parking voucher from your dining destination. Alternatively, you could sell your car and take a bus, trolley or subway for less than $5 round trip. The majority of restaurants on the list are within a stone’s throw of public transit.
Factor in tip and don’t be a stooge. If you’re going the BYOB route, or plan on drinking water to keep your part to the ďŹ xed price, you’re still looking to spend about $45 per person for lunch or $26 for lunch. All the sudden not so cheap. But if you’re eyeing higher-end restaurants (see point numero uno above), it’s a relative steal. Just don’t skimp on tip to save a few bucks. Staff members are going to be slammed, and back-of-house workers aren’t seeing any bonuses during the gruelling restaurant week business.
Looking to squeeze in two meals? Do one lunch and one dinner. Sure, it’s simple math. But doing lunch is also a good way to try out a few different places, or revisit an old favorite. Some of the restaurants on the list have well-regarded lunch menus anyway — Estia, El Vez, et al. But remember that restaurant week menus don’t necessarily offer the “traditional eating experience. Read up and then make your reservation. Q TWITTER: @MAXMMARIN

Among those terminated were civil asset forfeiture officials and criminal prosecutors with a history of seeking the death penalty.
Firing the squad Leaked list shows DA Larry Krasner layoffs targeted top staff, “Porngateprosecutors BY KERITH GABRIEL
L
arry Krasner is wasting no time putting his stamp on the District Attorney’s OfďŹ ce of Philadelphia. Just three days after being sworn in, the new district attorney has already sent shockwaves through the building, with the Inquirer reporting today that “dozensâ€? of ADAs had been let go. Krasner’s ofďŹ ce declined to release names but conďŹ rmed in a statement late Friday afternoon that 31 employees in the 534-person department were asked to resign immediately. Since his election in November, speculation has loomed about a mass exodus of DAO employees, especially those who found themselves at odds with Krasner’s progressive priorities. But Krasner, who easily coasted to

victory on a wave of support for criminal justice reforms, made no secret of his intention to clean house. He noted that past top prosecutors — including former Gov. Ed Rendell, who started his political career as Philly’s DA in 1977 — initiated staff shake-ups soon after taking ofďŹ ce. Some names have since leaked from inside the rapidly transforming ofďŹ ce. While some ADAs expressed shock at their dismissal, other sources saw a clear method to the madness. One source inside the DAO – who held onto his job – described a list of two dozen ďŹ red attorneys circulating among staff as “supervisors with different visions, veteran highsalaried do-nothings or younger prosecutors associated with misconduct.â€? A number of names on a list of axed staffers
include attorneys assigned to the DAO’s homicide division – which handles many capital cases – and drug enforcement and civil asset forfeiture units that have drawn the ire of criminal justice reformers. Although Civil Asset Forfeiture Unit chief Drew Jenemann was not dismissed, Melissa Francis, who headed the DAO’s Dangerous Drug Offenders Unit, was let go. That division works closely with the CAF unit, both of which were the subject of a recent joint City&State PA and Philadelphia Weekly investigation. A relative conďŹ rmed Francis’ dismissal over the phone, saying she was â€œďŹ red for sticking up for what she believes in.â€? Reviewing the list of reportedly terminated staffers, former Civil Asset Forfeiture chief Beth Grossman – who was Krasner’s Republican opponent in the general election – expressed regret that many “were and are friends, colleagues and dedicated public servants.â€? Other sources noted that numerous murder squad prosecutors were let go. This unit had a record of seeking the death penalty at the behest of former DAs, despite Gov. Tom Wolf’s moratorium on state executions. (Only three convicted murderers have received the penalty in Pennsylvania in the last 37 years, the last
being executed in 1999.) Andrew Notaristefano, a homicide prosecutor who has convicted dozens of murderers in more than a decade at the ofďŹ ce, conďŹ rmed to the Inquirer Friday that he had been let go “without explanation.â€? The longtime prosecutor, however, has over the years fought for a Death Row verdict in court under the leadership of former DAs Seth Williams and Lynne Abraham – even arguing for it in a 40-year-old murder case last year. In 2015, a Philadelphia judged ordered a retrial in a 2002 death penalty conviction due to a glaring DNA mix-up. Common Pleas Court Judge Benjamin Lerner called the case “a gross series of unimaginable mistakesâ€? by both police and prosecutors. In his defense, Notaristefano, who was assigned to handle the retrial, said that it was an “honest mistakeâ€? and that the convicted killer’s attorneys – one of whom was Michael Coard, a longtimer Krasner supporter who sat on his transition committee – had also missed the blunder. Other notable homicide prosecutors who sources conďŹ rmed had been terminated include ADAs Tom Lipscomb, Bridget Kirn, Joe Whitehead, Laurie Moore, Namratha Ravikant and Gwen Cujdik. E. Marc Costanzo and Pat Blessington, two top ADAs in the ofďŹ ce, were also reportedly ďŹ red. Both had been close associates of Frank Fina, a former state prosecutor whose feud with disgraced Attorney General Kathleen Kane dominated headlines for years. Costanzo had joined Fina and fellow prosecutor Pat Blessington in retreating to Philadelphia from the AG’s ofďŹ ce in the wake of the so-called “Porngateâ€? scandal. Calls to both ofďŹ cials went unreturned Friday, although a DA source with ďŹ rsthand knowledge of Costanzo’s ďŹ ring conďŹ rmed his dismissal. Several high-ranking deputies and division chiefs are also among the terminated, according to multiple sources. Among them: Trial Division chief John Delaney, Jr.; Pre-Trial Unit Chief Michael Barry; Derek Riker, chief of the district attorney’s Diversion Courts Unit; and James Carpenter, chief of the Family Violence and Sexual Assault Unit. Sources said that Riker and Barry were involved in the city’s MacArthur Grant-funded initiative to reduce recidivism. None could be reached by phone or text message on Friday. Caroline Keating-McGlynn, another unit chief who was also among those said to have been terminated, had most recently headed up the DA’s Gun Violence Task Force, a statefunded arm of the DAO focused on gun crime that is also a major beneďŹ ciary of asset forfeiture funds. Keating-McGlynn also helped spearhead some of the department’s “focused deterrenceâ€? efforts in South Philadelphia – but the zero-tolerance approach to gang violence has fallen out of favor with criminal justice reformers. ADA Mark Gilson was also let go. Gilson was dismissed from the DAO’s insurance fraud unit, but had previously led the

SAVAGE LOVE
Worms Turn
I’m a 67-year-old gay man. After a breakup 15 years ago, I believed the possibility of emotional and sexual intimacy with a partner was over for me. Then a couple of months ago, my desire for sexual contact increased dramatically. For the ďŹ rst time, I began using apps, and I felt like the proverbial kid in a candy store; it seemed strangely similar to when I ďŹ rst came out in San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood in the early 1970s. Also, I was surprised—not unpleasantly—by the whole Daddy phenomenon, never imagining that this old face and body would interest younger men. You can probably guess what happened next: I was contacted by a 22-yearold man who revealed himself to be mature, intelligent, sweet, and, fatally, the physical type that arouses me most. I fell hard, and he seems to like me too. Am I a creep? A fool? Is my judgment impaired? – Dumb And Daddy The sexy “Daddyâ€? thing—which has always been with us—seems to be undergoing a resurgence. Perhaps our omnipresent abusive orange father ďŹ gure is giving us all daddy issues that are manifesting (in some) as a burning desire to service kinder, sexier, more benevolent daddies. Or perhaps the internet is to blame—not for creating more people interested in intergenerational sex and/or romance, but for making it easier for people to anonymously seek out the kind of sex and kinds of sex partners they truly want. Even if the initial looking is anonymous, DAD, discussing one’s desires with others who share them helps people grow more comfortable with their desires and themselves—nothing melts away shame quite like knowing you’re not alone—and more people are coming out about their non-normative sexual desires, partner preferences, relationship models, etc., than ever before. That said, DAD, if the affections of a consenting adult 40-plus years your junior is your particular perk of aging, go ahead and enjoy it. Keep your expectations realistic (a successful STR is likelier than a successful LTR), don’t do anything stupid (see Father Clements, below), and reacquaint yourself with my constantly updated and revised Campsite

Rule: When there’s a signiďŹ cant age and/or experience gap, the older and/or more experienced person has a responsibility to leave the younger and/or less experienced person in better shape than they found them. No unplanned or planned pregnancies, no sexually transmitted infections, no leading the younger partner to believe “foreverâ€? is likely. Do what you can to boost their knowledge, skills, and self-conďŹ dence while you’re together, and do your best to stick the nearly inevitable dismount—the chances that you’ll be together forever are slim, but you can forever be a friend, mentor, and resource. While the age difference will creep some out, DAD, that doesn’t mean you’re a creep. Don’t want to be a fool? Don’t do anything foolish (see Father Clements, below). Worried about infatuation-impaired judgment leading you to do something foolish? Ask a few trusted friends to smack you upside the head if you start paying his rent or lending him your credit cards. And just as you don’t want to take advantage of this young man, DAD, you don’t want to be taken advantage of either. We associate age with power, but youth and beauty confer their own kinds of power, and that power can be abused—it can also lead seemingly sensible men to sign their life savings over to 24-year-old Romanian “models.â€? For example: “A 79-year-old retired priest has been left heartbroken and homeless after his 24-year-old husband left him just after their home was put into his name,â€? LGBTQ Nation reported. “Philip Clements sold his home in Kent, England, for ÂŁ214,750, before moving to Romania and purchasing an apartment for the couple to live in in Bucharest. He signed over the property to Florin Marin, so that Marin would have security after he passed away‌ Marin broke things off just weeks after the apartment was put in his name, and Clements found himself homeless.â€? Keep Father Clements’s sad story in mind, DAD, but don’t be paralyzed by it. Because there are lots of examples of loving, lasting, non-creepy, non-foolish relationships between partners with signiďŹ cant age gaps out there. So enjoy this while it lasts, and if things start to get creepy—if he starts shopping for an apartment in Bucharest—then you’ll have to pull the plug. But if this turns into a loving, lasting, healthy, and unconventional LTR, DAD, then one day he’ll get to pull your plug. (When that day comes, which hopefully won’t be for a long, long time.) Q

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING: Kathy & Patrick Conway are the best real estate agents that I’ve ever dealt with because they are so experienced. They gave me great ideas and direction -- both for the big picture as well as with the small details. It was often the small details that made a difference. Best of all, I knew Kathy was with me every step of the way. She patiently responded to my calls and supported me when I panicked about something. I myself am a Clinical Psychologist and to ďŹ nd these qualities in a real estate agent was amazing. Kathy & Pat have always been unfailingly optimistic and for me this has been important. I trust Kathy & Pat and would never use anyone else.
