Goes to actor Jeff Garlin for his GOT EEM moment on Sixers center Joel Embiid after the team’s win against the Clippers in Los Angeles on Jan. 1. Pretending to be apart of the postgame media horde, Garlin called on Embiid from the back announcing himself to be from Pirates of the Caribbean Magazine and asked Embiid which film in the series is his favorite. A confused Embiid shook his head and muttered “I don’t know, man, under his breath, giving both Garlin and the rest of the reporters an awkward belly laugh at his expense. Q

So did you hear the story of the guy who burned down three porches in West Philly on Wednesday? Well it’s true, but quick work by police and fire officials led to the capture of a suspect, who when searched had a pocket full of lighters on him. We know innocent until proven guilty and all, but come on, buddy...anywho, the good news is that despite the damages to the structures no one was hurt. According to Fox 29 reporter Steve Keeley on Twitter, the suspected arsonist told unsuspecting residents at the third fire of his aspirations to be a firefighter. Seriously, WTF is wrong with people? The number of minutes into the new year for Philadelphia to record its first homicide of 2019. A man was shot and killed in Kensington minutes after the ball fell and at the time of this report, police had no suspect and no motive as to why the tragedy happened. Come on, Philly. Let’s be better.

We regret to inform you that a new year means a change in an old and popular South Philly staple. Last week, the Penrose Diner announced plans to suspend its 24-hour service as of Jan. 1, open now for dining from 6 a.m.-midnight. Management cites staffing issues as the reason for the cutback, but the only staff we can think of are all the 3-11 p.m. night nurses, police and second shift city workers that now have to find a new place to get scrambled eggs, toast and bacon at 2 a.m. Q

6+87 +,6 $66 '2:1 The real realities of the latest Trump temper tantrum has done more than become just more fodder for mainstream media, this one is directly affecting people’s lives. Earlier this week, Inquirer, and Philly.com reporter Juliana Feliciano Reyes proďŹ led the many Philly area government workers like National Park Service employees and TSA ofďŹ cials who are deciding to feed their families or spend money on gas to drive to work for free during a shutdown of government resources and funding to those workers, one which has now entered into the New Year. It should be noted that Philadelphia tourism board Visit Philadelphia donated $32,000 to assist tour guides and security guards and other personnel with the National Park Service during the holidays. The organization realized it’d be criminal to have people work pro bono during the second busiest week of the year for the park system. You read that right. Our city’s own tourism organization gets it, but the Commander-in-Chief of our nation does not. Let that one sink in. Q

Smokers looking to get treatment at City-run facilities will also have to give up their butts in response to a new ban. While research suggests a positive overall effect in efforts to rid of all vices, some simply don’t see the need to force people to quit.

P

hiladelphia’s new nicotine ban that began Jan. 1 in all city-afďŹ liated rehabs and treatment programs is causing much trepidation and speculation. Some people have questioned whether it’s too much to ask those trying to recover from substance use disorders to kick nicotine at the same time. Others say the move is a positive one, and the city has pushed ahead with the order, citing research in support of its anti-cigarette move. Division (CBH) has prohibited smoking and all forms of tobacco use with the dawning of the new year. This affects 80 inpatient addiction treatment programs in the CBH provider network, including nine detox facilities, 32 short-term rehabilitation programs, 31 long-term rehabilitation programs, and eight substance use halfway houses. People in these facilities who smoke will be offered counseling and medication, such as nicotine replacement therapy and even Wellbutrin, which has been shown to help in smoking cessation. What may be surprising to some is that surveys indicate tobacco use kills more people than both opioid overdoses and gun violence in Philadelphia. Surveys also show that smoking among those with a substance use or alcohol

problem is around 69 percent and 48 percent respectively, while smoking among Philadelphians who report not using drugs or alcohol hovers at around 22 percent. “People who have a substance use disorder are smoking as much as three times the rate of the general population, and, tragically, they are dying 25 years earlier than the general population largely because of smoking-related diseases affecting the lung and heart,â€? said Philadelphia’s Behavioral Health Commissioner David T. Jones. “Providing substance use treatment in a smoke-free environment will not only help us to improve addiction recovery outcomes for people, it will also help us to improve their overall health outcomes – consistent with our population health approach to delivering behavioral health services in Philadelphia.â€? But recovering drug users like Johnny DiPatri (a.k.a. Pipewrench) who has been in recovery from heroin use for about three years, thinks the ban is a “terribleâ€? move. “We have people who are trying to put down one thing, you know,â€? said DiPatri, a plumber by trade who lives in Kensington. They’re trying to stop doing drugs, and you take away smoking from them? It’s just a bad idea. It could irritate and agitate people who are trying to put down drugs and alcohol‌ I don’t understand why they would do that because it makes the whole recovery process harder.â€? However, City ofďŹ cials say the move is based on research that shows combining smoking cessation treatment with recovery settings for alcohol and other drugs is often successful. “The perception that cigarette use helps with remaining abstinent from alcohol and other drugs has fostered a culture of smoking among this patient population,â€? said Dr. Renee D. Goodwin of the Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy, City University of New York, in the text of a study by the National Institutes on Drug Abuse that concluded that smoking in-

creased the likelihood of drug relapse. “So far, the bulk of the evidence suggests that concurrent smoking cessation and substance use treatment is the most beneďŹ cial approach,â€? Goodwin wrote. But some on the front lines remain skeptical. Frank Aikens, director of the First Stop Recovery House in Kensington, is in charge of helping people through a 12step recovery model. Aikens, a smoker himself, points out that cigarettes have a “hell of a withdrawal.â€? He feels that “telling everybody to give up the drugs and give up on nicotine – is simply too much at once. “Everybody has a choice what they want to do in life,â€? Aikens said. “It’s supposed to be a free country.â€? He suggested that these treatment programs set up a smoking section so others wouldn’t be affected by second-hand smoke. A client in the long-term residential treatment program at Kirkbride in West Philadelphia, getting help for his post-traumatic stress disorder, mental health issues, and a substance use disorder, one man told PW under condition of anonymity that he was trying to cut down on his cigarette use in anticipation of the ban. It wasn’t going to be easy, but he felt conďŹ dent that Kirkbride would provide him the help he needed to quit. Donald Pratt, 69, runs a shop in Kensington. After nearly 40 years of shooting heroin and using other drugs, he has been in recovery from opioid use disorder for more than two years. But Donald still smokes. Nonetheless, he said the ban was a “good thing. Cigarettes are bad for everybody, and second-hand smoke doesn’t help people either.â€? Plus, Pratt said he was sure that the ban would work. “[In the end], People will adjust,â€? Pratt said. “People will just have to handle it.â€? FROM THE EDITOR

Resolute T

here is something to be said for the clean slate a new year provides. I’m not talking about all the bullshit resolutions that never get kept, or the stuff mainstream media tells you to consider, I’m referring to the more subtle changes which arrive from being a year older, and a bit more hip to the game teaches you. So instead of planning to lose weight, eat better, drink less or one of the other things I know would inherently fall to the wayside over the next two weeks, I’m thinking long term and plan in 2019 to do more of the following.

Give away shit I don’t need or use.

You don’t realize how easy it is to accumulate stuff until you look around at all the things you have and the few times you don’t use most of it. I have books in boxes I’ve never read, clothes I’ve purchased without trying on at the store, only to get home and realize what looked good on the dude in the catalog is not an accurate representation for my body type, and all the half broken or easily mended stuff sitting half-broken and waiting for someone to come easily mend it. With two kids I don’t have time to tinker. Living in the poorest big city in America, it’s cruel to not offer this stuff to someone that could beneďŹ t from it. Besides, I’ve always been a fan of the minimalist lifestyle, but that has gone by the wayside. What used to be a chair a TV and a table in the living room of my apartment is now a couch, ottoman and a oor full of random toys, so much that I don’t even know what I’m stubbing my toe on anymore. So fuck it, I’m purging. And I suggest that if you have the time, get some boxes and spend a day decluttering your life, too.

Do more for me.

I can’t speak for other parents of toddlers out there, but I’ve never been this stressed out in my life thinking about all that needs to be done for little humans that can’t help themselves. I never understood stress until these perfectly imperfect mini-me’s arrived to complicate life and make it exponentially awesome – seemingly in lockstep. Compound that with work and relationships and I ďŹ nally understand what other parents often refer to as “the struggle.â€? Right now, by the

Disconnect more. We all know that as awesome as technology is, it’s also one of the single most detrimental things to our well-being. The next time you’re in a public place, take a second to look at all the people looking down at a smartphone. Or the people at an event or just taking in a beautiful setting looking at their surroundings through a screen; most likely so they can quickly share it with others on social media. I’m guilty and I deal with this in my own life. My phone is my own worst enemy. It’s a constant reminder of the ever-evolving shit I have to do and all the shit that’s forthcoming. It would take a full week to answer all of the emails in my work inbox, I’m on ďŹ ve different company Slack channels and I curse the day I ever put my cell number on my business card. But it’s the life and one of the good things about what I do is that because news is everevolving, this has never been a normal 9-to-5. Which means life is planned around work, not the other way around. So being more effective with time management so I can stay ahead and check out is the goal this year. Regardless of who at times it may offend. I don’t know. To me, these all just seem a lot more real that cooking mail-order meals or attending short-lived HIIT classes at a gym. Here’s to a 2019 in which I hope we’re all taking a look at how we can make the day-to-day a bit more manageable and still feel like a we won in the game of life this time next year. time the kids are off to bed, there’s roughly 1-2 hours of actual adult time to be had before I pass out on the couch only to do it all to do it over again beginning at 5-6 a.m. the next day. However, the holidays offered a period of reection. I realized there are pockets of downtime that I’m not using effectively. I work out, sure but instead of binging another show on Prime or Netix, I could work out some more. Instead of putting the kids to bed and jumping back online to respond to work email or aimlessly scrolling my Instagram feed until 11 p.m., I could do almost anything else. A third party who doesn’t know you but has to hear you out and offer smart advice on how to be your best self is amazing. ven though Jan. 1 is technically just the next day in a lineup of days and, if anything, signals an odd-numbered year — which is illogically irritating — many Philadelphians remained spirited by the open possibilities of a new year. And with that spirit comes the all-too-notorious New Year’s resolution.

Keeping your resolution may be the needle in your New Year’s ballon, slowly deating as your goal motivation dwindles or as your champagne ute empties. The historic Sedgwick Theater in Mt. Airy will plays host to playwright Clifford Odets’ timeless classic Awake and Sing! which opens Jan. 23.

Actor Lawrence Pressman discusses the relevance of Quintessence Theater Group’s upcoming show Awake and Sing! BY ANDREA CANTOR

P

hiladelphia playwright Clifford Odets premiered his magnum opus, Awake and Sing!, in 1935. But as the Quintessence Theater Group takes the play to the stage at the Sedgwick Theater, it seems as though it could have been penned today. A predecessor to Eugene O’Neil and precursor to Tennessee Williams, Odete centers Awake and Sing! on the Bergers, a Jewish family during the Great Depression. Three genera-

tions crammed in a small Bronx apartment, the family is divided into realists and idealists as they each try to survive and strive for their own pursuit of happiness. Lawrence Pressman plays Jacob, the Marxist grandfather constantly at odds with his daughter, the pragmatic matriarch, Bessie. Making his Quintessence debut, Pressman is an actor with over 150 television and movie credits and best known for his part as Dr. Benjamin CanďŹ eld in the 1980s TV drama, Doogie Howser, M.D. But the proliďŹ c onscreen actor has alway shared a longtime love for the stage, including on Broadway in Woody Allen’s Play It Again, Sam and Man in the Glass Booth, both directed by Harold Pinter. He was also accepted

into the ďŹ rst repertory theater at Lincoln Center, headed by artistic directors Elia Kazan and Robert Whitehead. “Awake and Sing! is about a group of people living together in very close quarters,â€? said Pressman, who currently resides in California. “With all of what is going on in the world around them, they're still falling in love, marrying the wrong guy, being cruel to each other and loving each other, and all of it in the context of the Great Depression.â€? This is not the ďŹ rst time Pressman has played the part of Jacob. However, it is his ďŹ rst time playing it at the appropriate age of 79. He originally undertook the role as a 19-year-old college student at Northwestern. However, Pressman noted that the play, while

Get’cha Head in the Game

How friggin’ cool. Listen to this—a Disney-themed karaoke and dance party. We never knew it was possible to string all of those words together in a single sentence, but someone went and did it (DJ Deejay? Also, awful name, bro, but we’ll let it slide) and we legit couldn’t be happier. Karaoke is terrifying to do but awesome to watch and listen to and jeer (lightheartedly, of course). And everyone has at least one (secret or not) Disney song that they love and know by heart and listen to on repeat whenever they’re down. Dancing is cool too ‌ as long as you don’t have to move too much. | 9pm. $5. The Fillmore, 29 E. Allen St. concerts1.livenation.com

egular readers of The Scene (we know you’re out there) will know that we don’t much go in for that whole religion thing. Not that religion itself is at issue. Just that religious people tend toward the unnecessarily moralistic and cognitively dissonant. Whether Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Muslim or any number of other God-fearing options, religion has largely become a vehicle for the, in truth, least moral amongst us to take advantage of the hopes and dreams and, ultimately, fears of others. Of course, preying on the weak and wanting isn’t new; it’s just the means through which religious zealots enrich themselves that are. What used to be hotlines and holy gatherings has turned to online donations and YouTube testimonials. Otherwise, not much has changed. But all that being said, the core of what made religion so important to begin with – spirituality, the search for answers to questions that will never be answered, the desire for community and doing good – remains. So whether you’re a believer – or not – take time out this Sunday to remind yourself that spirituality is important. That belief in something bigger than yourself and whatever form that something takes - isn’t always bad. That we may be lacking in wise men these days, but that the world had at least three of them once, and they knew that giving, that sharing with those less fortunate, was the only true way to celebrate this one and only life. – CAL SETAR | @CALSFRO -$18$5<

We don’t often include open mics, and for good reason. That reason mostly being that they’re everywhere and happening all the time and so it’s not necessarily noteworthy when one is going down. But every once in a while we like to include one just so people don’t forget the ďŹ ne folks still just trying to make it, the hope-rs and dreamers who pour their heart and soul into something they don’t really have a platform from which to share. Sure, make all the jokes you want, but remember this—at least the people onstage are willing to try, and that’s more than most can say. | 630pm. Free. We don’t know Timothy Antwon Toler aka Paula Deen-White, the drag queen/chef extraordinaire who will be hosting this ďŹ ne evening of food and fun and ďŹ nery, but if we did, we’d deďŹ nitely ask if there’s a Paula Deen angle to the stage name and whether it’s meant to mock the former celebrity chef’s, ahem, questionable cultural choices of the past. But that’s not what we’re here for. We’re here for Paula’s Drag Kitchen ... just like we’re here for whatever funny shit we can all come up with to mock her leathery, overstuffed, racebaiting namesake. | 630pm. $8. Oh! You Pretty Things: A Bowie Inspired Art Show

It’s gonna be a Bowie-heavy week here in the Calendar section of PW. Mostly because we love David Bowie and all the weird, spaced-out musical amazingness his too-short years in this dimension brought us, but also because the ďŹ ne folks at Philly Loves Bowie have taken it upon themselves to put together a full week of events aimed at celebrating the Prince of Pastels and Face Glitter’s life/oeuvre/transmogriďŹ cation. So start with the art show, but gird yourselves for a week’s worth of “Life on Mars?â€? ‌ in Philly. | 6pm. Free. A Bowie Masquerade Ball

Normally, we’d just make Philly Loves Bowie Week into The Scene and call it a day, but there was so much juice from this particular piece of “Fameâ€? fruit and we love that wild space alien so damn much that we ďŹ gured it was better to space it out (see what we did there?) across the entire seven days (or in Bowie Terms, “that means nothing because time is a human construct and my species has transcended the need for such trivialitiesâ€?). Next up on the docket? A masquerade ball.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 5 GIVE BACK

Project Save One Emo Night Brooklyn: Philadelphia

Sometimes, we have to stop and wonder just how it is that these events get named. Like, for instance, this one. “Emo Night Brooklyn: Philadelphiaâ€? is possibly the most convoluted, unnecessarily confusing name in the history of events. And we get it—you started a company called Emo Night Brooklyn, and now it’s big enough to take it elsewhere. Cool. But just know that the confusing-ass name is probably keeping at least a few people on the outs. Plus, description like this deďŹ nitely don’t help. | 1030pm. $12. The Fillmore, 29 E. Badfish: a Tribute to Sublime

Tribute bands are kinda ‌ weird. Like, you love music obviously, which is why you made a band and started playing shows. But also, isn’t the whole point with music to create stuff? To make your own sound that would then draw people in? Like does anybody love any one band that much? Who knows, maybe we’re completely in the wrong here, but all we do know is Bradley Nowell was a genius and we’ll be right there singing “40 Oz. to Freedomâ€? with all the other old people (yes, it’s their debut album, but it’s also the third track on that album, you poser). | 8pm. $20. Me & Mr. Jones: My Intimate Relationship with David Bowie

First off, the most important part—proceeds from ticket sales go to beneďŹ t the Cancer Center at CHOP. The second most important part? The New York Times has previously referred to performer Raquel Cion as “half witch, half cabaret performer.â€? The Birthday Bash! Ziggy v. The Thin White Duke

What is it? Where did it come from? Did we bring it into being simply by invoking the name of the demi-god we know as David Robert Jones? As for the “what is it? end of things, we don’t really know. Drop It Like It’s Hot

Anybody else feeling the urge to stand awkwardly in the corner and pretend like the sweat building up under your arms isn’t making you almost as uncomfortable as the fact that the kid you like pretended not to hear when you asked to dance? SUNDAY, JANUARY 6 FOOD & DRINK

3rd Annual Philly Loves Bowie Brunch

We can’t decide whether Bowie would’ve been a fan of brunch or not. On the one hand, it’s an excuse for the vapid and vain to get day drunk in a socially acceptable situation. On the other, it’s an oddly formal, yet highly enjoyable chance to dress up nice and sip coffee while snacking on tasty treats. Bowie would probably fall somewhere in the middle— dressed to the nines, but grinning through his teeth at the excess around him. | 11am. Free. Chatayee Thai, 1227 Walnut St. phillylovesbowie.com

PARTY

Bowie Paint & Create: A Benefit for CHOP

Once again, the most important part—this is a fundraiser for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The second most important

part? It’s a paint and play at a hair salon. What’s not to love? No painting experience needed, just a wild sense of style and maybe a little love of Bowie. And hey, even if you don’t love Bowie, we doubt he’d begrudge you an afternoon of fun. | 2pm. $40. Rebel Rebel Salon, 2603 E. Allegheny Ave. phillylovesbowie.com

How old was David Bowie when he ďŹ rst burst onto the music scene? What was his ďŹ rst international hit? What year did he change his name from David Robert Jones to David Bowie? Chill & Kill Horror: Mandy

Nicholas Cage is a madman. You might think that’s a lead-in to the description of this movie, but it’s not. It’s just our opinion. Nicholas Cage is, legitimately, a man who’s gone mad. Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to hurt anyone or even himself. But it does mean that he’s gone off the deep end, willing to make whatever movie crosses his path, living his best life with reckless abandon. Of course, the good part about taking the shotgun approach to movie-making is that you’re bound to hit on at least one killer. SAVAGE LOVE

Lost Kinkster DAN SAVAGE I’m a 19-year-old bisexual woman really into orgasm denial and edging. With the recent Tumblr ban on all NSFW content, I have no idea where to indulge my kinks and ďŹ nd my community. I’ve never needed to go anywhere else to ďŹ nd porn, explore my sexuality, and be surrounded by supportive people— and now I’m at a loss. A few Google searches have been really disheartening. Clearly I’ve been spoiled by all the easily found porn made by women, for women on Tumblr. Hell, I’m used to it being made by bisexuals, for bisexuals. I feel like I’m 15 again, desperately scouring the internet for anything that applies to me. Please tell me where I can ďŹ nd my porn! – Missing My Porn Community P.S. You wrote about how this ban harms sex workers, Dan, but please write about how it harms queer and kinky people, too! “Many people are scrambling to relocate their fetish communities in the wake of Tumblr’s ban on ‘adult content,’â€? said Alexander Cheves, a queer writer who lives in New York City. “Porn is more than hot videos—porn creates communities. I wouldn’t know half the gross stuff I’m into if it weren’t for Tumblr!â€? Luckily, MMPC, the men and women who created and/or curated the content that spoke to you and afďŹ rmed your identity didn’t evaporate on December 17, the day Tumblr’s porn ban went into effect. Many have taken their clips, captions, GIFs, and erotic imaginations to other platforms and some are creating new platforms. “MMPC should devote some time to scouring Twitter for bisexual women into orgasm denial and edging, some of whom may be uploading their original content to platforms like Just For Fans,â€? said Cheves. “The creators of JFF are right now working on a more Tumblr-like social-media extension to their site. Other startups like Slixa or ShareSomeCome and social platforms like Switter have emerged in the wake of this crackdown. These are corners of the internet where

3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

MMPC can ďŹ nd her porn.â€? Cheves wrote a terriďŹ c piece for Out that connects the dots between Tumblr’s ban on porn and the anti-sex, anti-porn, anti-sexwork, and anti-queer crackdown that was already under way on other platforms (“The Dangerous Trend of LGBTQ Censorship on the Internet,â€? December 6, 2018). While there’s still tons of porn on the internet, as many people have pointed out (myself included), the crackdown on explicit content on social-media platforms is fucking over vulnerable queers. As Eric Leue, executive director of the Free Speech Coalition, told Cheves: “Many people in straight, heteronormative communities don’t understand what the big deal is [about the Tumblr adult content ban], because their lives and cultures are represented everywhere. For those in queer, or niche, or fetish communities, Tumblr was one of the few accessible spaces to build communities and share content.â€? And as long as sex-education programs don’t cover queer sex or kinky sex—and there’s no sign of improvement in either area—LGBTQ youth and young people with kinks will continue to get their sexual education on the internet. And the harder it is to access explicit content, particularly explicit noncommercial content, the harder it’s going to be for young queers to ďŹ nd not just smut that speaks to them, but the education they need to protect themselves. “More youth will get hurt and more will get HIV thanks to Tumblr’s content ban,â€? said Cheves. “That’s not scaremongering— that will happen. Case in point: I grew up in a ďŹ ercely religious home on a 500-acre farm in the middle of Georgia with dial-up and a pretty intense parental blocker. I couldn’t access porn—I couldn’t even access articles with sexual illustrations, including sexual health illustrations. When I went to college in 2010, the same year Grindr hit the App Store, I knew absolutely nothing about HIV and nothing about my community. It’s no wonder that I tested positive at 21.â€? Shortly after getting the news that he was HIV+, Cheves started an educational queer sex blog. “I answer sex questions from anyone who writes in—I stole the idea from you, Dan, to be honest,â€? said Cheves. “I wanted to reach those kids in the middle of nowhere, kids like me.â€?
