FROM THE EDITOR
Do your homework I
KERITH GABRIEL
’d like all the pundits out there to consider doing one thing in 2018. If you don’t understand the scope of something you’d like to opine, please don’t waste space on the internet – or worse, precious newsprint – for your take. Add it to the other resolutions you’ll attempt to keep, like losing weight or saving more money. Because perspectives that don’t arrive with a sense of any insight or background are not only annoying, they’re dangerous. I’ve read many so-called hot takes over the past year that left me shaking my head. But the one that forced my ďŹ ngers to make this the ďŹ rst column of the new year was a late December opinion piece from radio personality and Philly.com columnist Dom Giordano entitled, “Do safe injection sites reect the moral code of Philadelphians?â€? It was a wellwritten, detailed, wholly inaccurate depiction of the current struggles of the drug crisis. What the piece missed was that implementing supervised injection sites is not a moral issue at all: it’s a public health measure to prevent wholly preventable deaths. We can all agree that the scope of our fatal drug problem has widened immeasurably in recent years, largely due to prescription opioids and easyaccess synthetic fentanyl. We have found no solutions in depicting (and crafting policy around) addicts as villains instead of the victims. In Giordano’s piece, he questions the responses given by Allison Herens, hired as the city’s harm reduction coordinator. Herens noted in a post on WHYY.org, that, while the city can’t force people to stop making bad choices, the city is respecting those decisions by offering people a place to go to do so, but also get help. What Mr. Giordano failed to realize about these places is that they offer services that ultimately affect the greater good the “majority of Philadelphiansâ€? should care about. Prevention services, counseling, disease testing – these are just a few beneďŹ ts that these ďŹ x rooms offer beyond a warm place to shoot up. I’m sure in Mr. Giordano’s neighborhood
3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20
there is no concern about having to step over or pick up a used hypodermic needle on the street, much like the ones pictured in his column, which were collected around Kensington’s McPherson Square Library over a two month period. It could even be a spot where these sites ďŹ nd homes because it’s where they are most needed; not the sprawling brownstone-lined streets of Rittenhouse where he suggests a mobilized version of safe injection operations should pit stop. I doubt he’s visited drug corners around Kensington Avenue or B Street and Cambria Street before he decided to craft his piece. I doubt he’s talked to homeless addicts under the Emerald Street Bridge or the underpass between Front and Lehigh, and seen the need for a place for people to go. If I’m wrong, Dom, please tell me. But most of those I know who have spent time in these areas and with these people do not view safe injection sites with the same moral high ground. As much as I get disheartened to the sight of people walking around city streets looking like zombies, I’m not naive that there is a story behind how all of them got to that point. For every person who got to zombie level through gateway drug use, there’s three who had major surgery, fed prescription opioids, got hooked and now scavenge for that next ďŹ x. It is what it is. At least the city, for all its faults, (see privatizing the PPA, forcing certain business owners to use bullets instead of having bulletproof partitions and DROP as examples) is considering doing what it can to try to keep a problem behind closed doors until there is a viable solution. It’s not about a progressive agenda, it’s about keeping shit safe. In his piece, Mr. Giordano asked if a “majority of Philadelphians really think we should be setting up sites where addicts can inject themselves and if they overdose, a doctor or other medical personnel will use Naloxone to save them?â€? To that I say absolutely if it meant those same majority of Philadelphians wouldn’t have to worry about stepping on a needle possibly teeming with hepatitis or HIV left on their block. Given my position, I’m doing my utmost to bring you information that comes from a place of knowledge, Philadelphia. I think the majority of you should expect the same in similar roles. Movies move back to Market East Movie theaters – the big sort with gilded ceiling and baroque marquees and orchestral pits – were once cultural landmarks of downtown areas across the country. Today, downtowns house smaller art house cinemas, while the ďŹ rst-run movieplexes mainly hold court in the suburbs and around the city’s car friendly fringes. Well, at least one company is bucking the trend: AMC Theaters announced last week it will open an eight-theater cinema in the reborn Market East Gallery downtown. We’re thrilled to have a new movieplex, which will reportedly be open by winter 2019. We’re less thrilled to utter the phrase “Fashion District Philadelphia,â€? which is the proposed rebrand for the renovated Gallery. Q
700-1000 The estimated number of teens who ran amok the day after Christmas through the Cherry Hill Mall. Of all those kids, only five were taken into police custody for disorderly conduct or resisting arrest. We’d ask where the parents were but we already know the answer. Hearing that story brought us back to the good ol’ days of all the bum rushing of stores and tables full of designer jeans inside the The Gallery. Q

Thumbs down To the city recording more than 300 homicides in 2017, the first time the city has gone above 300 in more than five years, according to recent numbers by The Brennan Center for Justice in New York. While Philly pales in comparison to cities such as Baltimore and Chicago, an uptick of 15 percent in homicides yearover-year is insane. In addition to making more money, losing weight and doing more for you, let’s also make stop killing each other a New Year’s resolution, Philly. Q

Do it for the love Shawn MicSkills hopes you listen to his music. But if you don’t, that’s cool too BY KERITH GABRIEL
S
o there’s this Philly rapper named Trademark, aka Shawn MicSkills. Even though he’s done shows in the past and has released a number of albums, you’ve probably never heard of him. For this South Philly native, that’s OK. While being “put on would be nice, for MicSkills that dream is like playing the lottery at this point, considering the 32-year-old is now a Baltimore resident with bigger aspirations of being a good father and stacking paper at his fulltime job than as an MC. Nevertheless, this story remains a successful one as MicSkills’ tale isn’t depicted as a washed-up rap hopeful with mixtapes gathering dust in his bedroom. He’s still making music and teamed up with fellow rapper and friend who prefers to go solely by the name of Kafka to create the latest endeavor entitled, Back2Back. MicSkills hopes the 15-track album, which can be streamed on Apple Music and Spotify, proves a testament to the grind the duo puts in – for the love of the game. “I don’t necessarily want to tell people how
3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20
they should feel about something,â€? MicSkills said during a recent conversation with PW. “But I do hope that the person that does take the time to listen to this hears it and says, ‘wow, this is a genuinely dope project.’ We put a lot of work in this and can hear that we not only work on our craft as lyricists, but we produce all the beats to it as well.â€? Brianna DeMayo, who heads Taste Creators, a full service agency committed to the marketing, promotion and production of up-and-coming Philly artists noted that while Trademark and Kafka got skills, success is all in the promotion, not the grind. “His ow is cool and the production is really good,â€? said DeMayo. “However, I feel that as far as the production goes, it’s a little outdated. This kind of music is for lovers of old school hip-hop, so off the bat you’re playing to a certain niche group. It’s not bad, but these guys are already on the backfoot if they ever wanted to go far because you’re minimizing your expectations of who wants to listen to your music. You can tell they’re purists, but in today’s game, people want what’s fresh.â€? If fresh is the new age style of mumble rap
MicSkills teamed up with friend and fellow MC, Kafka for his latest offering, a 15-track album of beats, rhymes and stories called Back2Back. that has vaulted players such as Future, Post Malone and even Philly’s own Lil Uzi Vert into the mainstream, then MicSkills is just ďŹ ne being among those who “enjoy the ďŹ ner things.â€? “If that’s what it takes to get put on then you can keep that shit,â€? MicSkills said. “Mumble rap is garbage. Listen, I’m not jealous of the guys it’s worked for, obviously they’re very good at it and are selling out arenas and selling platinum albums, but I don’t know if that’s a reection of their ability to mumble over a good beat or the dumbing down of rap
There is something about listening to Back2Back that keeps you sucked in. It’s not telling the story of the streets as MicSkills said that despite growing up a stone’s throw away from some, it would not be fair to call his row on 13th and Morris, “the hood.â€? However, the music of the underground is what stuck with him. But instead of rapping about the grind, MicSkills’ route was going to be rapping out the grind, the proverbial “blood, sweat and tears,â€? that goes into producing music that may never see the bright lights of the mainstream, but still comes with massive amount of gratiďŹ cation. “Whenever I’ve gone into this – and I’m going back almost 12 years ago to when I created my ďŹ rst rush demo (mixtape) – a lot of it is drawing from those inuencers that I grew up listening to,â€? MicSkills said. In fact what drove MicSkills to decide to stay as underground as the music he creates is in large part due to the fact that he tried to emulate that hard style made popular by so many artists. It was a recipe for disaster as a lack of authenticity led to a weak response and admittedly weak performances. “At that time [when I was doing shows] you look at what was popular and there was some degree of pressure that if you’re going to be in hip-hop, you got to be hard, you have to have an edge,â€? he said. “But I’m a nerdy white guy who likes wrestling and comic books that can ow and that works for me. I like hip-hop for the fact that it’s very raw and very honest and rebellious and it encourages you to question authority, so I knew if I was going to do this the right way, I can’t be up here doing this fake shit. It’s gotta come from a place of authenticity.â€? That place now is long hours after work and putting his little one down for the night in his studio crafting beats and trying to be his own hype man on Back2Back. It’s rare to ďŹ nd a purist in the game, someone who would spend long hours in the studio doing anything that isn’t a certainty would arrive with at least some monetary gain. But that’s Shawn MicSkills. Who hopes we all listen but is perfectly content with being a solo army. “I’ll work an eight-hour day, come home and be on my computer for another eight hours making beats,â€? MicSkills said. “I’m passionate about this. Do I hope I would’ve made it in the game? Who doesn’t, but it’s a nice dream. I get a chance to tell my story and make good music and I’m ďŹ ne with that. That’s my hustle.â€? Q TWITTER: @SPRTSWTR

YOU!
We asked three Philadelphians their aspirations for 2018. Here’s what they said...
BY ANDREA CANTOR
Even with champagne – and a whole bar full of other libations – New Year’s partiers kept it lively throughout Philly to welcome in 2018. Donned in party hats, flashy outfits, and noisemakers, the festivities provided a much-needed oasis from the everyday drama. As they partied away the past year, PW caught up with these three Philadelphians to reflect on 2017 and tell us their goals over the 360-some odd days to ensure 2018 is a success. started now, it is not going to happen. They are not realistic. If you haven’t already prepared yourself for them, then it is not going to happen overnight. You have to really want it. A lot of people get caught up in immediate gratiďŹ cation, but not really the commitment of what it really takes, and what it takes to make it come to fruition. I feel like me getting rid of toxic people is something realistic, and something that I can actually stick to and commit to, and actually beneďŹ t me and everyone who is around me.
In 2018, Niles (center), who partied it up at Fox and Hound on NYE, vows to leave all the negativity and drama in 2017.
Nikky Niles | Center City
er thing to implement that in your life by having nothing but positive people around you.
What is your New Year’s resolution? My resolution is to get negative people out of my life. I don’t need anybody toxic in my situation. What I realize is that it is one thing to say that you want to be positive, it is anoth-
Why didn’t your resolutions from last year work? First of all, they were unrealistic. All of them were like “I want to lose 25 pounds in the ďŹ rst month.â€? Yeah right, if you haven’t
-$18$5<
What are you gonna do for you in 2018? I deďŹ nitely want to pay more attention to myself, because I’m the one who would give my drawers off my back to the next person, and just run around the city freeballing. But I can’t keep doing that, because frostbite is real. So! I want to make sure I don’t get frostbite before I help out the next person.
Staying relaxed, festive and being a genuinely good person are on the list of resolutions every year for Jonathan Hunter.
Jonathan Hunter | South Philadelphia So what is your New Year’s resolution? To be a better person. Would you like to expound on that? To be a great parent, and to be a hard-working student, and to be a successful business owner where people have a good time. Student? I’m a law student at Widener University. Are you a person that doesn’t really keep ďŹ rm New Year resolutions then? I think everyone should try to be a better person every year, and it should be everyone’s New Year’s resolution. Does living in the Trump era provide any extra motivation to get this law degree? I think everyone should get along. I think that people need to not take themselves too seriously, especially in the entertainment world and the bar world. I think if people could just relax a little bit more, have fun, and not be so tense that maybe that will pervade other facets of their lives and society. Can you explain your ensemble? This is my fancy shmancy suit. Do you always go festive? Very festive. I wore it speciďŹ cally for that New Year’s resolution that people shouldn’t take themselves too seriously, especially in the bar business. It is about having fun, relaxing, meeting people, being down-to-earth and not being stuck up.

Kevin Ehert | South Philadelphia What’s your New Year’s resolution? To not be so critical of people and to be a better person myself. How will you put those goals into action? I have high standards, and I believe that sometimes when you hold yourself to a high standard you believe that others will join in on that high standard. Sometimes, I lose patience if they don’t have that high standard as I do. But now it’s time to teach people, and maybe a having a bit more patience in myself as well. I try not to set goals that I am not going to meet. I try to be realistic. I think the ones I picked this year are probably pretty good. What did you think of 2017 overall? It was a tough year. Throughout the entire world, the entire world had a tough year. It’s
3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20
a shame that we had natural disasters, political disasters, manmade, climate made, it’s been a tough year, and I wish everyone had a better year. Does your New Year’s resolution have anything to do with Trump’s ďŹ rst year in ofďŹ ce? Do you think after 2017, you are more politically motivated, less politically motivated? I couldn’t be any more motivated if I tried. I will make sure to go to everything I can to make sure that person is no longer our president. And what do you think about 2018? It’s going to be a great year. Staying positive? Absolutely. Q TWITTER: @ANDREAJCANTOR

NEWS ed prosecutors to the ofďŹ ce, Krasner’s draw remains unclear. Some progressive attorneys who supported Krasner have said they’d be unlikely to work in a prosecutor’s ofďŹ ce they feel is fundamentally irreparable. The newly minted DA faces a list of harrowing issues outside of his agenda. The city’s homicide rate is up, clearing more than 300 fatalities last year for the ďŹ rst time since 2012. After campaigning exclusively on reforming the ofďŹ ce, Krasner still has to prove that his wait-and-see approach to target gun crimes will work and show how he will prioritize violent offenses as the city’s top prosecutor. At the inauguration ceremony, much mention was made of crime victims and the DA’s duty to them. “The safety of our most vulnerable citizens ‌ is the district attorney’s highest priority,â€? Mayor Jim Kenney said prior to Krasner’s swearing in. Krasner replaces Kelly Hodge, the interim DA who took over after Seth Williams’ resignation amid his corruption scandal.

arry Krasner, a longtime civil rights attorney who was once deemed “unelectable,â€? was sworn in as Philadelphia’s next district attorney on Jan. 2, vowing to reduce mass incarceration and enact a raft of reforms to a scandalplagued ofďŹ ce. “Today, we start the long road of trading jail cells and trading death row for schools,â€? Krasner said at the Kimmel Center on Tuesday. His inauguration address reafďŹ rmed campaign promises to bring systemic change to Philly’s justice system by reducing cash bail, prosecuting police misconduct and prioritizing drug treatment over incarceration, among a litany of other progressive
ambitions. Unlike his predecessors, Krasner brings no prosecutorial experience to the city’s top law enforcement ofďŹ ce. He gained local fame as a defense attorney who represented both Black Lives Matter and Occupy Philly. But on inauguration day, Krasner, who has locked horns with the police union and ďŹ led civil rights suits against the PPD, spoke encouragingly of reconciliation between police and communities. With an annual salary of $177,000, the district attorney oversees an ofďŹ ce with about 600 staffers, about half of whom are prosecutors. Since coasting to victory in last May’s crowded primary, there’s been no shortage of speculation as to what a Krasner DA ofďŹ ce would look like. He has yet to announce any deputies or high-ranking ofďŹ cials within his ofďŹ ce, and while his campaign has been looking to recruit reform-mind-

Krasner isn’t the only new elected ofďŹ cial this year. Rebecca Rhynhart was sworn in as city controller, becoming the ďŹ rst woman to hold that position in the ofďŹ ce’s 150-year history. At 43 years old, she’s also one of the youngest elected ofďŹ cials in town. The city controller serves as the lead auditor for all city ofďŹ ces, overseeing both the effectiveness and ďŹ scal responsibility of programs at every level of government. Rhynhart brings experience as former Mayor Michael Nutter’s budget director and Kenney’s chief administrative ofďŹ ce. Prior to her government work, Rhynhart worked on Wall Street for Bear Stearns. A political rookie, Rhynhart trounced longtime incumbent Alan Butkovitz, a seasoned veteran of the city’s Democratic party, and coasted easily to victory over a Republican challenger in the general election. Throughout her campaign she criticized Butkovitz of politicizing the ofďŹ ce and holding “gotcha press conferences.â€? In her inauguration speech, she made some oblique jabs at her predecessor. “We deserve more than the mediocrity and corruption we see every day,â€? she said. Citing the “millions of dollars that are wasted by the government,â€? the new controller also laid out some action items for her ďŹ rst few weeks in ofďŹ ce. In light of the opioid epidemic, the biggest of Rhynhart’s announcements also drew the most enthusiastic applause: a massive audit of the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disability Services, a $1-billion-a-year machine that oversees all of the city’s mental health-related contracting. Rhynhart also drew cheers when she said she’d keep pressure on the scandal-ridden Philadelphia Parking Authority. She has vowed to work more closely with the Kenney administration than the past controller’s ofďŹ ce has, a promise that drew criticism from political rivals. Q TWITTER: @MAXMMARIN

“We’re bridging the gap between art and porn... expanding the idea of what sex and sexuality means, the variety of ways to see and experience pleasure. That’s interesting to me to see and share.â€? – HEART BYRNE, FILMMAKER AND HOT BITS FESTIVAL CO-PRODUCER “If you can make Snapchat [videos], you can make a ďŹ lm that works in this festival,â€? WĂł explains. “We receive submissions with
high technical quality, but we don’t privilege those,â€? comparing their review process to the average ďŹ lm festival. “Then again erotic ďŹ lms aren’t usually accepted at most festivals either.â€? “The quality of the camera angles is not as important as the content of the stories,â€? agrees ďŹ lmmaker and festival co-producer Heart Byrne, “The weirder the better: expanding the idea of what sex and sexuality means, the variety of ways to see and experience pleasure. That’s interesting to me to see and share.â€? Byrne says, “We’re bridging the gap between art and pornâ€? and she and the other organizers consider Hot Bits to be a part of a larger movement of queer artists who want to celebrate sexuality while eschewing the racism and sexism that’s entrenched in mainstream porn. The timing is especially appropriate for this kind of visibility and resistance. The Trump administration openly displays antagonism toward LGBT rights: supporting legislation that allows discrimination, proposing a ban on transgender military members, reversing safe bathroom access, even quietly removing the LGBT rights page from the White House website. Sex positivity is under ďŹ re as well, as budgets are cut for comprehensive sex education, access to birth control is made more onerous and accused sex offenders are left in positions of power. Combatting the current political climate is a big piece of the motivation for this project for Byrne, who says, “to celebrate pleasure and sexuality with other queer people feels really important right now.â€? She’s hoping that other folks are motivated to participate and points out there is still time to make and submit a ďŹ lm before the Feb. 14 deadline. Expecting that some people interested in participating might be nervous, the festival organizers insist that anonymity is possible. “You don’t have to show your face or use your real name. You can opt not to be promoted on our website,â€? WĂł reassures, adding that all types of bodies are welcome. “We would like to showcase as many marginalized, unrecognized, fetishized identities and experiences as possible,â€? she says, adding, “speciďŹ cally from the perspective of those people.â€? The ďŹ rst iteration of Hot Bits was last year, when the organizers put together an invite-only event for their friends that ďŹ lled to capacity. There was a mixture of ďŹ lm and live performance, featuring submissions from around the country. This year the organizers, a team that also includes artists Wit LĂłpez, Arazel Newman and Topshelf, are expanding to a much larger venue and are also including a second event in Baltimore. I
married my high-school sweetheart at 17, had a baby, together a few years, mental illness and subsequent inďŹ delity led to things ending. My ex-husband remarried, divorced again, and is now in another LTR. I’m in a LTR for a decade with my current partner (CP), we have a few kids, and I’m so in love with him, it terriďŹ es me. My ex frequently makes sexual remarks to me, low-key irts. I feel an animal attraction in the moment. Whatever. I don’t want to be with him, my relationship with CP is solid AF, and I get amazing fucking at home from a man far more skilled. CP knows about ex-husband’s remarks and one actual physical advance. CP has offered to talk to my ex. I told him nah, I’ll deal with it and make it stop. I talked to my ex-husband today, and he said: “I’m sorry, it’s just teasing, I won’t make an actual move ever again, but you’re the only woman I ever just look at and get immediately hard for, and it’s only a few more years before our kid is fully grown and we don’t see each other anymore. So humor me because you know we both enjoy it.â€? And it’s true that I do enjoy it. But how harmful is it to engage in irty banter without any touching, nudity, or worse? I hate having secrets, as I feel they are barriers to intimacy, but I’m a thirty-something mom and it is so fucking unbearably sexy to be made to feel so desirable even after all that shit between us and it’ll never, ever happen because hell no am I sleeping with my exhubby, but knowing this man will never get a whiff of my pussy again but can’t help but beg for it with his eyes gives me a sense of power like I’ve never fucking felt before, but even so I don’t want to be a terrible person for hiding this from my CP because I don’t like having secrets from him but this is just one that turns me on to no end but I should nip this in the bud and put a stop to it yesterday because it’s wrong, right? – Secret Longings Utterly Titillating I love a good run-on sentence – grammar fetishists are going to get off on diagramming that doozy you closed with – so I’m going to

When we’re in play, he says that I chose him as my top precisely because I wanted to see how far I could go and that it’s his job to push me out of my comfort zone. I think he’s twisting my words. Arguing over limits mid-scene makes us both frustrated and angry. I’m not in any physical danger, but his requests (if carried out) could ruin some of my existing relationships. Did I blow it by not giving him a list of my hard limits in advance of becoming his sub? Or is he just a shitty, inconsiderate top trying to take advantage of a novice? After play, he checks in to see if I’m OK, which on the surface looks like great form – aftercare and all – but this also feels manipulative. How can I pull things back to where I’m comfortable? Do I run from the scene – or just this guy? – Tired Of Overreaching From A Shitty Top
TEASE YOUR BRAIN.
WORD SCRAMBLE Rearrange the letters to spell the words in the boxes and a ďŹ nd a few extra.
A top who reopens negotiations about limits and what’s on the BDSM menu during a scene – a time when the sub will feel tremendous pressure to, well, submit – is not a top you can trust. The same goes for a top who makes demands that, if obeyed, could ruin their sub’s relationships with family, friends, other partners, etc. Run from this guy, TOOFAST, but not from the scene. There are better tops out there. Go ďŹ nd one. Q

give it a shot, too: I don’t see the harm in enjoying your ex-husband’s irtations so long as you’re certain you’ll never, ever take him up on his standing offer, but you are playing with ďŹ re here, SLUT, so pull on a pair of asbestos panties when you know you’ll be seeing your ex-hubby. I don’t think you should feel bad about this secret because while honesty is great generally and while the keeping of secrets is frowned upon by advice professionals reexively, SLUT, a little mystery, a little distance, a little erotic autonomy keeps our sex lives with long-term partners hot – even monogamous relationships – so instead of seeing this secret as a barrier to intimacy, SLUT, remind yourself that the erotic charge you get from your ex-hubby – the way he makes you feel desirable – beneďŹ ts your CP, because he’s the one who will be getting a big, fat whiff of your pussy when you get home and there’s nothing wrong with that, right?
