o let me tell you about how I spent the weekend out of a job.

On Friday, I was notiďŹ ed that I no longer was employed by Newspaper Media Group, the Cherry Hill-based company that purchased Philadelphia Weekly in 2016 just months before I took over as editor in October of the same year. It was a good run with NMG, whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s management admitted candidly that the publication is a different beast than the community weeklies its owner Rich Donnelly and publisher Perry Corsetti are passionate about.

The paperâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eclectic stronghold with Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s counterculture and the fact that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s anything but a traditional community newspaper, I was always told, was intriguing to Donnelly, even if he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always agree with the contents.

But this isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a tale of woe, instead of hope and excitement of whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s to come as PW was sold to Dan McDonough, owner of â&#x20AC;&#x201C; well, quite frankly a lot to be honest â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but most notably Philadelphia-based brand ďŹ rm Woden and as of Monday, PWâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s retained an HQ address in the City of Brotherly Love and yours truly as its old, yet new editor.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had lengthy discussions with McDonough, who revealed his love affair with PW and his aspirations of purchasing it years earlier. His goal is to produce a sharper print product visually, one that you will actually be able to ďŹ nd each Thursday when PW hits the streets. I respect the fact that McDonough is a newspaper man through and through, having cut his own teeth with national publications and being in the business on some capacity since he was 19.

I told him about the numerous emails from devout readers who mention they canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ďŹ nd the paper, or ask for a subscription just so they can ensure they receive a copy. On the top of the list of things that will improve under new management is our distribution, with a goal of more in-house drops and honor boxes youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll want to stick your hand in.

This change isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t happening overnight, in fact thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no rush in the immediate to change anything. The news youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve come to expect will remain the same and you can read our daily

content on PhiladelphiaWeekly.com. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking for where you can ďŹ nd a copy in print, there is still a graphic called Where You Can Find Us located right on our homepage. However over the next year, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll see a few changes, a sharper version of our website, a modiďŹ ed rebrand to our current look in print, but perhaps more importantly the growth of the paper and an increased page count.

In its heyday, a minimum page count for PW was 80 pages. Right now weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re printing and distributing at a little over a third of that.

Our goal, understanding the state of newspapers, advertisers and the marketplace, is to have our minimum at half that. May still sound small, but if you read us regularly, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll physically feel the difference in an additional 20 pages ďŹ lled with watchdog journalism, arts and entertainment news thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s uniquely PW all wrapped in sharper, more stunning visuals.

I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to tell you that journalism, the kind that holds a ďŹ&#x201A;ame to people in power, the kind that reveals the human side of the everyday person, the kind that exposes you to your ever-changing city, community and neighborhood (for better or worse) is vitally important.

If it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t, there wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be people trying equally as hard to suppress it.

This is your alternative news feed, Philadelphia, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m excited to steer it into new waters. Personally, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important that I thank the ownership and management of NMG for the freedoms our editorial staff was permitted to deliver award-winning journalism over its two-year run. I also thank them for having the foresight to not let a good thing die and pass it on into what I believe are extremely capable hands.

I want to thank my NMG colleagues, particularly the editors and writers of the Northeast Times, South Philly Review, The Star and series of Bucks County-based publications, of which we all shared the same umbrella. Sharing a newsroom with dedicated journalists forces you to remain on your A-Game, and that room...

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had many ďŹ rsts, but this is probably the ďŹ rst time I can say I have had my employment terminated, reinstated and have never been more excited about the future. The goal is to do what needs to be done to not only keep PW as the recognizable watchdog itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s become, but to transcend it across all mediums. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a shared vision between editor and owner and collectively, the passion to see this through is there.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been on display since late October, but this week was the first opportunity to check out the complex, yet awe-inspiring wonderland of artwork from world-renowned artist Rina Banerjee and her North American debut exhibit, Make Me a Summary of the World. Banerjeeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work frequents art houses in Asia and Europe but this is the first time her work has been shown on this side of the pond, with a home here in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and in conjunction with the San Jose Museum of Art. Banerjeeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work has routinely been large-scale installations and sculpture sourced from materials all over the world, and this exhibit is no different. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s running at PAFA through the end of March 2019, but we think the holiday season is the perfect time to take some time and let Banerjeeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s artwork serve as a perfect think piece of just how diverse of a planet we inhabit. hen the right-wing rally called We the People was planned for Philly, fear that hate was arriving in droves to the the City of Brotherly Love.

But thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not how events turned out on Nov. 17 outside Independence Mall. Contrary to expected numbers, only two dozen or so conservatives showed. However, leftist counter-protesters came in the hundreds, representing all walks of the movement.

Despite reports of peaceful demonstrations by the two groups, there were a number of clashes between the two sides as well as with the police.

Four people were arrested during the day, including an Antifa member who sustained a head wound following a ďŹ ght with an altright protester.

In video captured by Philadelphia Weekly â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which can be viewed on our Facebook page â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the Antifa man was held down by multiple police ofďŹ cers, who placed a foot his head and held it to the cement even with his visible head injury and small pool of blood beside him. After getting up from the group, the caucasian man started yelling at police and was carried away. Sustaining head injuries, it was conďŹ rmed the counter protester was transported to a hospital.

While the Philadelphia Inquirer reported â&#x20AC;&#x153;no indication of attendance by neo-Nazis, white supremacists, or members of hate groups such as the Proud Boys or Three Percenters,â&#x20AC;? the video shows identiďŹ ed alt-right Proud Boy Alan Swinney clad in riot gear.

Other video by PW shows police ramming bikes into two women protesters and a video of a cop pushing a person yelling at Swinney.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;[I am protesting] the injustices of Black people, minorities, everybody. I am scared of the cops. They kill us on camera and get away with it,â&#x20AC;? said Richard Scott of West Philly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m down here for that. I have kids, I have family members, so thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why I am down here today speaking on all injustice.â&#x20AC;?

The day had high police presence with law enforcement on foot, car, bicycle, motorcycle and even horse. â&#x20AC;&#x153;An alternative to police based on community principalsâ&#x20AC;? were the handful or so Antifa members, identiďŹ able by face coverings, sunglasses and hand radios used for intercommunication, an Antifa member named only as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Karaâ&#x20AC;? told PW. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are not here to incite anything, incitement doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do much,â&#x20AC;? said Kara, who disapproves of comparisons to police due to the anti-fascist militant groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beliefs in law enforcement corruption. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Think of it this way, a security guard at a bar or at a club isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t there to incite violence, but if someone becomes violent towards them or to a patron, they are going to be violent back, because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s their job.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re security guards. We are not here to start anything, but if someone else starts something then we are going to keep people safe.â&#x20AC;?

The incident had additional resonance being just weeks after the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting that left 11 dead. Counter-protester Steve Newman, an English professor and president of the labor union at Temple University, shared what it meant to protest the alt-right as a Jewish man. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What I was taught, being raised as a Jew, my father [said] the verse in the Torah that is repeated most often is â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;be kind to the stranger, because you were strangers once in Egypt,â&#x20AC;? said Newman. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That is the ethical precept I try to live my life by and that my wife and I try to teach our kids. You have a group on the other side that seems invested in persecuting the stranger, that for whatever reason for their own sadism or their own insecurity seem to enjoy, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not even a matter of need, it seems to be this weird pleasure in making other people feel scared or feel frightened or feel persecuted, and we simply canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t tolerate it.â&#x20AC;?

However, there were people whom the left were there to defend in full support of the altright movement and stood on that side of the protest. A self-identiďŹ ed Jewish man named Ryan, whose last name was omitted for privacy, held an â&#x20AC;&#x153;I Back the Blueâ&#x20AC;? sign, showing his support for the police, and wore a U.S. cap and an Israel Defense Forces sweatshirt. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The reason why I am wearing an IDF shirt is to not only show conservatives who might be thinking that there is the Jewish conspiracy and stuff like that, that not all Jews are liberals,â&#x20AC;? said Ryan.

Additionally, the We the People rally was the ďŹ rst pro-Trump event for Desmond, a 27-year-old African-American man from West Philadelphia. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m interested in meeting like-minded people, like-minded conservatives. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to

ďŹ nd that in a city thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mainly Democrat,â&#x20AC;? said Desmond. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are Black conservatives.â&#x20AC;?

While Desmond did not vote in the 2016 election, he said Trump has his vote for 2020 because he is a â&#x20AC;&#x153;great deal breakerâ&#x20AC;? and has increased jobs. Desmond was unwilling to accept that decreases in unemployment were already in motion during the Obama administration.

In terms of the racist afďŹ liations of Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s base, Desmond said it is â&#x20AC;&#x153;hard to judge from the outside.â&#x20AC;? Daniel Rivera, a Latinx Trump advocate said he supports the focus on increased borders. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I believe there is a difference between legal and illegal immigration, and I believe that legal immigrants should be supported,â&#x20AC;? said Rivera, a New Yorker.

When asked about the Dreamers in America, immigrants who were brought to the states illegally as minors, Rivera said borders need to be secured before giving safeguards to them. Otherwise it would be an â&#x20AC;&#x153;endorsementâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;incentiveâ&#x20AC;? for illegal immigration. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Because of our lax immigration policy in the past, we are in a difďŹ cult situation now dealing with the consequences of that,â&#x20AC;? explained Rivera.

Bridge divide As one of the last of Kensington encampments is cleared, what remains unclear is where inhabitants will go next

hepard and his brother Bill, who only felt comfortable using their ďŹ rst names, recently made their way from South Jersey to Kensington where they landed under the Frankford Avenue bridge at just the wrong time. Little did they know that on Nov. 15, the city was going to clear people, their tents, and their belongings out of what had been a long-term encampment of individuals experiencing homelessness and addiction.

Shepard, 37, and Bill, 23, said they would just go back to Jersey. In the meantime, Shepard connected with one of the outreach workers from Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services who have been fanning out under the Frankford Avenue and Emerald Street bridges for a couple of months, trying to link people with housing and treatment options. The city aims to clear the Emerald Street encampment

by Jan. 15. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I can tell that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re very genuine people,â&#x20AC;?

Shepard said, adding he would stay in touch with the person he spoke to in case he decided to come back for treatment. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I started drinking at the age of 8 years old,â&#x20AC;? Shepard said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I manage my PTSD with heroin. It keeps me calm in general and keeps me more loving because Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not in pain. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not a bad person.â&#x20AC;?

Wanting the public to see them as human beings rather than â&#x20AC;&#x153;junkiesâ&#x20AC;? was something people echoed under both bridges. People also voiced worries about where they would go when the encampments were emptied, some individuals saying they werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ready for treatment and the tent cities were like a family to them. But Mayor Kenney has issued an Opioid Response Executive Order with 100 major goals that has clearing major encampments at the top of the list. Earlier this fall, the city closed encampments under the Tulip Street Bridge and along Kensington Avenue near the intersection with Lehigh Avenue.

At a press conference Friday, Kenney expressed optimism, saying he was very pleased about the progress so far. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trying to get as close to treatment on demand for folks,â&#x20AC;? said Timothy Sheahan, director of homeless services for the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services, taking a break from his outreach work under the Frankford Avenue bridge Wednesday. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So both inpatient beds if theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re interested in coming inside to inpatient treatment and also outpatient medicated assisted treatment as well.â&#x20AC;?

Sheahan said they had been able to get about 15 people into shelters and about 12 people into treatment from both bridges. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re just really listening to folks around what their needs are and â&#x20AC;Ś what it is that they would like to see happen for themselves and trying to create those options,â&#x20AC;? Sheahan added.

Nonetheless, many people under the bridges expressed skepticism about the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s efforts. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I just think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s messed up,â&#x20AC;? said a 31-yearold woman who goes by â&#x20AC;&#x153;Gâ&#x20AC;? under the Emerald Street Bridge. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yeah, obviously weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re drug addicts, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like one big family. We actually look out for each other. They act like theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to offer us shelter and treatment. They donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t offer shit. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like yeah we live under a fuckinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; bridge but we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bother nobody.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Kensington,â&#x20AC;? G continued. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a goddamn bridge. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think it should be such a big deal. â&#x20AC;Ś Wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the community rather us be here than on their front steps or using their car mirrors to shoot up?â&#x20AC;?

Raymond Johnson, 54, said he had been living under the Emerald Street bridge for eight months. He thought the city should start rehabbing some of the abandoned buildings in the area to house people experiencing homelessness. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All they gonna do is send people to another place to do the same thing,â&#x20AC;?

Johnson said about the encampments closing.

Clutching a new pair of socks and a package of crackers he had gotten from outreach workers, Miguel Montanez, 42, said through a translator that he came to Philadelphia from Puerto Rico and has been homeless for two years. He had been living under the Frankford Street bridge for about a week. He said he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what he would do the next day when the city cleared the encampment, that he would probably just move over to Emerald Street.

Nicholas, 35, who only wanted to use his ďŹ rst name to protect his family, was visiting the Frankford encampment looking for his friend. He didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ďŹ nd him. Nicholas said he, himself, had experienced homelessness for many years when he was using drugs heavily.

He camped in McPherson Square Park. Now he lives in a studio and is in recovery. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nobody wants to be out here â&#x20AC;&#x201C; I mean I guess different strokes,â&#x20AC;? Nicholas said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But nobody wants to be out here living under a bridge and freezing and starving. You know drug addiction is a hell of a thing. It takes you places I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think anybody ever thought they would be. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is painful to look at,â&#x20AC;? he added. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is all pain and suffering. â&#x20AC;Ś People arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t out here having a good time just getting high and partying.â&#x20AC;? Ellie: I was actually pretty calm so I was the opposite. I don't really scream but when I found out I was sitting on my Ottoman on my knees and I starting jumping up and down and smiling alot, I was so excited.

What's life like as an actress when you're also trying to be a kid?

Jemma: I definitely miss my friends a lot but I know that I am doing something thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worth it. I love performing and I know this is what I want to do with my life so I am taking the time to be the best Matilda I can be, because who know where it can go from here. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tough to balance work and school, but I have great teachers.

Ellie: You have to make sacrifices. I know that this is what I want to do with my life and I understand that it's going to be difficult at times, but I love being on stage, it makes me happy, so I make sure I do all the things I need to do to keep my dream going.

Does it get easier playing the same character night after night?

Jemma: It gets easier. My mom attends every show and tells me that with each show it gets better and better as it goes along. Memorizing the lines was really hard at first, but I practiced and it goes easier and to do it everyday, now it just comes naturally. I mean Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m riding a desk on stage and singing, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to remember.

On friendship: Jemma: We didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know each other at the auditions, but our moms met up when we found out that we were both playing Matilda and we had a playdate at Ellie's house. We sang and played with her American Girl dolls, which I have so it was great to get to get to know her.

Ellie: Meeting Jemma has been great. I know we're going to be friends after this because we share so much in common and are both sharing living out our dream.

ast month, controversy stirred at the Barnes Foundation centered around the naming of its latest exhibition â&#x20AC;&#x153;Berthe Morisot: Woman Impressionist.â&#x20AC;? In a piece by the Philadelphia Inquirer, people claimed misogynistic undertones for its gender classiďŹ cation of an established French painter, Berthe Morisot (1841-1895), asking â&#x20AC;&#x153;Would an exhibition of Monet ever be called called â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Claude Monet: Male Impressionist?â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

In the weeks following the debate, it would seem the appropriate time to highlight another 19th century French impressionist, a woman sculpturess whose legacy lives on the Parkway at the Rodin Museum. While you may not be familiar with the work of Camille Claudel (1864-1943), you may have unknowingly seen her artistic prowess in the hands and feet, arguably the hardest parts to sculpt, in many acclaimed pieces by renowned sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917). â&#x20AC;&#x153;Morisot and Claudel faced a number of similar challenges and struggled to be recognized as female artists in 19th century France.

Sculpture â&#x20AC;&#x201D; working with clay, wax or marble with oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hands â&#x20AC;&#x201D; was a harder ďŹ eld for a woman to gain acceptance in than painting,â&#x20AC;? said Jenny Thompson, curator for the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which oversees the Rodin Museum. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Claudel had a ďŹ ery temperament, unlike Morisotâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more restrained, perhaps balanced, character. Morisotâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family, particularly her husband, Eugene Manet, was far more supportive of her work than Claudelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family, which tolerated her art-making but perhaps never understood how ďŹ ercely it drove her.â&#x20AC;?

With growing importance being placed on revisionist feminist history, Claudel like many other talented women obscured by history is ďŹ nally gaining the recognition that she could not achieve in life. Last year, the MusĂŠe Camille Claudel opened in her hometown of Nogent-sur-Seine, France. Claudel was also

depicted in ďŹ lms, such as the 1998 ďŹ lm Camille Claudel starring GĂŠrard Depardieu and Isabelle Adjani, 2013â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Camille Claudel 1915 with Juliette Binoche, and 2017â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ&#x201A;op Rodin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I hope that this is not just a trend,â&#x20AC;? said Brooke Davis Anderson, museum director of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, reexamining historyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s constructed narratives of women artists. PAFAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current exhibit, Make Me a Summary of the World, showcases contemporary sculptress Rina Banerjee, an American immigrant of the post-colonial Indian diaspora whose works touch upon global themes and intersectional feminism.

A student, an assistant, a muse, a lover, Claudelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s memory and noted artistic mastery has been relegated to adjectives in association to Rodin over the years. Her other descriptor has been crazy, or an â&#x20AC;&#x153;Abandoned Schizophrenicâ&#x20AC;? as stated by Travel Tips in France, since she was institutionalized at an asylum for the last 30 years of her life.

Claudelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s story typically starts with her meeting Rodin at 19 when he was gathering artists for his larger commissioned works in the 1880s, but it really begins at the age of 12 when she ďŹ rst experimented with clay sculptures. Recognizing the young Claudelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s talent, her father, Louis-Prosper Claudel, sent her pieces to be evaluated by sculptor Alfred Boucher, a friend of Rodinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. Boucher would later introduce the two.

But before that fateful meeting, Claudel would study sculpture at the AcadÊmie Colarossi on the Rue de la Grande Chaumière.

The prodigy could not attend the most prestigious Ă&#x2030;cole des Beaux-Arts, since the school did not accept women at the time.

After graduating, the young adult would work with Rodin, already a distinguished artist in his 40s. Tasked with the difďŹ cult hands and feet, Claudel worked on several of Rodinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s commissioned pieces, most notably the 200 ďŹ gures in Gates of Hell. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For several years in the mid-1880s, Rodin paid Claudel to work as an assistant in

his studio and she contributed elements to several of his pieces in that period. It was an expected and understandable practice at the time,â&#x20AC;? explained Thompson. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Claudel in the 1880s was a ďŹ ercely independent and ambitious woman looking out for her own rights â&#x20AC;&#x201D; hence the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;contractâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; that she made Rodin sign that did not allow him to take on any other pupils and required him to promote her work.â&#x20AC;?

According to the Smithsonian, the signed â&#x20AC;&#x153;contractâ&#x20AC;? entailed that Rodin â&#x20AC;&#x153;accept no other (female) student but she, that he protect her within the artistic circles and that he marry her following a trip to Italy or Chile.

This contract would never be followed up.â&#x20AC;?

Rodin was living with Rose Beuret, one of his earlier models. The two were companions for over 50 years and married days before Beuretâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death.

After having an abortion, Claudel called off her affair with Rodin. Determined to make it on her own as an artist, Claudel tried to get her own commissions and exhibit pieces. But being a woman artist trapped in established masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shadow posed a major obstacle in attaining a spotlight for her own. Moreover, many of her pieces connoted a sexual nature, some nude sculptures, and were censored by the state and press, according to National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Convinced that â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rodinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gangâ&#x20AC;? would steal her work, Claudel began destroying her own work. Only 90 of her pieces remain today.

Showing signs of mental instability, Claudelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family did not tell her that her father died. Just days later, her brother, who was a famous writer, and mother had her committed where she spent the rest of her life. She never sculpted again, refusing art supplies in the institutions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am in no mood to be deceived any longer by the crafty devil and false character whose greatest pleasure is to take advantage of everyone,â&#x20AC;? Claudel is quoted with saying of Rodin, whom she often referred to as â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Ferret.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;After their relationship collapsed in the 1890s, she grew bitter and perhaps paranoid, making many claims toward Rodin that were probably driven by desperation and illness,â&#x20AC;? said Thompson. As far as I know, he never knowingly â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;stoleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; any of her work and on the contrary evidence suggests that he deeply respected her talent and sought to help her even after they had broken up.â&#x20AC;?

Philadelphia Rodin Museum holds two of Claudelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s original solo works, including â&#x20AC;&#x153;Head of a Laughing Boyâ&#x20AC;? (Modeled 18911892; cast 1925) and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Head of a Slaveâ&#x20AC;?

(Modeled c. 1887; cast 1925).

The museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s description of the two heads read: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Jules Mastbaum purchased these bronzes as the work of Auguste Rodin, but recently they have been attributed to Camille

Claudel, who worked closely with Rodin in the 1880s and 1890s. Plaster versions of both heads were signed by Claudel, but the bronzes made from them were mistakenly stamped â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;A. Rodin.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

In addition to a book in its library, the museum also mentions Claudel in a collaborative piece called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Brother and Sister.â&#x20AC;? The museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s description of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Brother and Sisterâ&#x20AC;? reads: â&#x20AC;&#x153;This charming sibling group has a complex and layered history. The seated, adolescent-aged sister is by Camille Claudel, the talented artist who was Rodinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pupil, assistant, muse and lover. Rodin modeled the young child and combined the ďŹ gures, creating a lighthearted sculpture that evokes the harmony and collaboration which on occasion marked the artistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passionate relationship.â&#x20AC;?

While many have blamed the â&#x20AC;&#x153;passionate relationshipâ&#x20AC;? for Claudelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s demise, there have been debates over her diagnosis and the nature of her commitment. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Modern experts have looked at her records and she really was very ill,â&#x20AC;? said MusĂŠe Camille Claudel curator CĂŠcile Bertran said to the Guardian in 2017. However, in an earlier Guardian article from 2003, it stated that her 1913 medical certiďŹ cate stated among her fears of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rodinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gangâ&#x20AC;? that she was also â&#x20AC;&#x153;badly dressed and absolutely ďŹ lthy.â&#x20AC;?

In an article by the Irish Medical Times, it references the certiďŹ cateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s evaluation of Claudel as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;systematic persecution delirium based on false interpretations and imaginations.â&#x20AC;? However, the article also mentioned that medical examiners had declared her ďŹ t for discharge on a number of occasions, but her family refused to release her.

According to the Irish Medical Times, over Claudelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 30 years in the asylum, Paul visited her ďŹ ve times, her sister once and her mother not at all. Last year, the museum celebrated Rodinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s centennial and acquired Claudelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Waltz,â&#x20AC;? which was on loan for the exhibit.

When asked whether Claudelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s works have been properly highlighted, Thompson pointed to the newly opened MusĂŠe Camille Claudel and the refurbishment of the Claudel gallery at the MusĂŠe Rodin done a few years ago in France. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[She] is much easier to study and appreciate now and a more balanced view of her work in relation to Rodin is emerging,â&#x20AC;?

Thompson stated. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The situation will always be complicated because Claudel destroyed a good deal of her own work and her family destroyed much of the correspondence and documentation concerning her life. Our view of her will always be incomplete due to these losses.â&#x20AC;? Q
