On our most recent chat over the weekend, Ron struck up the topic of immigration. His stance is one that follows similar to the current Administration, that “illegals” must be deported no matter what. He even went as far as to say that while it’s heartbreaking to see children ripped from familiarity, the blame really is on the parents.

“Look, man, I hear you,” he always starts when he disagrees with my point. “But if they didn’t bring their kids, [the Border Patrol] wouldn’t have to split them up, so in my opinion, the blame is on the parent. Those guys are just doing their job to protect us as American citizens.”

We, the extremely fortunate American citizens.

Times are tough for anyone not of the 1 percent, but no matter what, we are fortunate to be born of a country where we aren’t running from oppressive rule, malicious drug cartels or forced labor. It’s inconceivable for many of us to think that someone would pack up their entire life and flee a familiar country for a sliver of a better future. But honestly ask yourself, if you had to deal with any of those situations mentioned above, wouldn’t you as a human attempt a chance for a better life for you and your family?

Listen, I’m not sitting here saying let’s open the floodgates and let everyone with a sob story come into the country. There need to be checks and balances, and I’m grateful for the people doing so every day along with our borders. My issue isn’t with them. They’re just following protocol.

Where Ron and I see eye-to-eye is that people need to go through the proper channels to get in and get help. But all I’m saying is the process doesn’t need to be so impossible that the only solution is to risk life and limb to get it, only to be treated no better than cattle once you finally reach the gates.

For those who disagree, as you read this, think about where you’re sitting at this very moment.

A Letter Away: Marie and Bill Miller

arie, 80, and Bill Miller, 77, from Clifford Heights have been married for 53 years. Bill first laid eyes on Marie back in 1962 at McGillin’s during a night out from the Navy Yard where he was stationed.

Marie was at the front bar with her friends, just having come off a late shift of nursing. Bill was quick to see Marie, but faced one hiccup — he was on a first date with someone else. Not a man to live with regret, Bill left his table to get more drinks and spoke with the woman at the bar stool, even getting Marie’s number as a result.

“My date came up and I said, ‘would you like to meet Marie?,’ and she said, ‘No, I don’t think so,’” Bill recounts, known for his playful nature.

Bill ended up calling Marie, and the two wound up back at an extremely crowded McGillin’s the next week. The place was so packed that Bill went by Marie, only catching “more or less her silhouette, because the light of the jukebox was behind her.”

Unable to recognize her as the woman he had just called, he was once again infatuated and initiated a conversation, asking her where she was from. Marie was quick to note their previous encounter to which Bill joked back, not letting another awkward encounter stop him.

“I thought he was the [most handsome] man in the world,” said Marie. “I still do.”

“In the dark,” Bill chimed in.

After that, the two “went out like crazy,” quickly recognizing their “day and night” personalities with Marie being more serious and Bill as more of a jokester. The romance forcibly ended when Bill left for San Diego and subsequently deployed to Japan for two years in the Navy.

A time before email and text, Bill began to write Marie letters.

One of those letters included a marriage proposal. Marie was in Kansas City, experiencing a brief change of careers as a stewardess when she received the letter of his return to the States and of his proposal. Guided by her heart, she soon returned to Philadelphia.

“My father was like, ‘you sure he’s going to show up because he’s in California and you’re back here.’ As I get older, I understand why he felt that way,” said Marie. “But if the chemistry is there, I think you just know, you just absolutely know.”

Bill and Marie have two children, both who were Navy fighter pilots, and four grandchildren. They still have not brought their sons, who are located in California and Hong Kong, to McGillin’s but are still hoping to share with them the place where their story began.

New beginnings: Nance and Regina Mullin

Reconnections: Ryann Gallagher and Kevin Kulak

ance III and Regina Mullin from Society Hill met at McGillin’s on Jan. 1, 2011 during its celebration of the Mummers Day Parade, both having had bad dates the night before on New Year’s Eve. An annual tradition for Regina, she came early with friends, anticipating the tavern to be packed. Invited by a mutual friend, Nance came later and was stuck outside in the line.

Once Nance got inside, he was immediately drawn to Regina. The two struck up a conversation that lasted hours. Heading back to Nance’s house, they let out his dogs, put on some Frank Sinatra, danced, talked, and then came back to McGillin’s for round two.

“I thought he was attractive, and I thought he must be somewhat normal if he’s friends with my friend,” said Regina. “So he had that on his side.”

The next year in 2012, the two were married. Admirers of the historic roots of McGillin’s, Regina and Nance continued in the old-timey footsteps. The two wed on the cobbled stone streets between 2nd and 3rd and Delancey where it meets Spruce St. A year after their wedding, they had a son, Nance IV. Today, just five years old, he’s already following in his parents’ McGillin’s-loving ways, becoming a regular for lunch and dinner.

Married for the past six years, the couple reflected on the “comfortable atmosphere” at McGillin’s as a reason why so many love connections have been made there, including their own.

“I think you can be yourself here. You don’t have to be on guard,” said Nance, 62, a retired software salesperson.

“It’s not pretentious. It’s just a nice crowd, it’s a nice group of people,” added Regina, 44, a retired school psychologist.

A long-time bachelor no more, Nance said he had “been looking for the right one.”

“Oh, you found her,” Regina laughed, also acknowledging the 18 year age gap as nothing but a number.

Each New Year’s Day, you can find Nance and Regina inside McGillin’s, celebrating nostalgia and a clean state at the bar where they first met and fell in love.

I

t had been 20 years since Ryann Gallagher, 28, and Kevin Kulak, 26, had seen each other. As kids, Ryann’s cousin and Kevin’s sister would hang out and let them tag along until the two friends lost touch. That’s why when Ryann was introduced to Kevin in the upstairs room of McGillin’s in 2015, she “barely recognized him.”

It would take two more chance encounters, also on the second level of the tavern, for Kevin to muster up the courage to bring a Coors Light over to Ryann at her high-top table.

“The rest was history,” said Ryann, a finance and accounting recruiter.

“That was it,” added Kevin, who is in finance and sales.

“We didn’t stop talking the rest of the night,” Ryann reminisced.

The relationship that formed was an unexpected surprise for both parties, neither ready for anything serious at the time of their reconnection. Kevin had just gotten out of a relationship and Ryann was completing her master’s and enjoying her early 20s, the latter of which she advises her sisters to do when they ask for dating advice. While the two were not actively looking for a relationship, as Kevin explained, “that always seems to be the time when you end up finding someone.”

The pair, who both hail from Plymouth Meeting, are engaged with plans to get married in November 2020.

“I think it’s the best bar in the city. I mean that’s like our personal opinion,” said Kevin, smiling at his fiancée. “But anytime I think about it, I obviously think about Ryann and how we met.”

The fact that the two reconnected in a place where many others have met their significant others only adds another special element to their story.

“We were one of 74 couples that [signed their names in the book saying that they] have met here, and that’s probably nowhere close to the [number] of people [who] have been here and actually gotten married,” Kevin continued. “So anytime I think about when we met, we met in a place where a lot of people seem to meet their soulmate.”

What’s more is that their love story is another memory in the larger tableau of McGillin’s relationship to Philadelphia.

“This bar is a big part of Philly history and we are rooted in this area, so to be able to say we met in a bar that has so much meaning to other people and to the city is pretty cool,” Ryann explained.

The last weekend of every February, the two return to McGillin’s to crack open a Coors Light and toast the bar that brought them back together.

Greater goods The Fund is out here thinking of savvy ways to hustle for Philadelphia students. And it doesn’t care who it pisses off

BY KERITH GABRIEL It was not Donna Frisby-Greenwood’s intention to offend anyone.

But if you are a new resident benefitting from a tax abatement and felt some type of way upon receipt of a recent letter from The Fund for the School District of Philadelphia, then the letter did what it was intended.

After receiving a manifest of names courtesy of City Councilwoman Helen Gym, The Fund got to work on drafting letters imploring residents to donate, even offering a formula to figure out how much you’ve saved on paying school taxes over the length of your abatement.

It was a notion that some agreed with and some clearly did not. Inez Ruiz, a mother of two from East Kensington, falls into the latter.

“We may own a newer home, but we’re in the same boat; it’s not like I have all this money that I have saved because of the tax break,” Ruiz told Philadelphia Weekly. “I understand why they send it, they’re looking for money, I get that, I just thought the letter didn’t take into account that not everyone can afford what these developers are charging for these homes these days who has the means to go beyond, that’s why the abatement is so appealing. I’ll donate sure, but don’t suggest I do the math, figure it out and send you a check, I’m just not OK with that.”

Well fair, but Frisby-Greenwood contends that since the letter, the Fund had 18 people donate, ranging in $25-$3,000. Of course, that’s 18 from a letter containing 14,345 households with an abated property.

So we asked Frisby-Greenwood – fresh off of major surgery just days before – on the Fund’s true intent and what else is coming down the pike that might set some people off.

What do you say to people who saw the letter as offensive?

We certainly were not trying to come off as harsh, we were trying to say here’s something for you to consider. Some people have already told us that they are interested in doing this, we just needed to make the ask, and so we’re asking. Certainly, we had no intention of offending anyone or guilting anyone. But if you’ve ever seen an annual appeal? They all make you feel guilty. That’s the whole idea.

We’re just trying to ask people who have the means to give and who would’ve loved to give the opportunity.

Some people say that The Fund is putting the chicken before the egg. That the notion of development brings density, which in turn brings opportunity for city constructs. Does The Fund believe that development is already here and that we’re onto the next phase of growth which is aiding a cash strapped school district?

We don’t have any thought on it, either way, to be honest. I lived away from Philadelphia for 10 years living in New York, Washington [D.C.], and Los Angeles and when I came back, Philadelphia was changing in a very positive way, and it continues to grow as a city.

We’re already seeing a population increase and that’s a really positive thing for our city whether it’s spurned by development or other things that are happening. I read one article recently that noted that more people move to Philadelphia from New York City than from Philadelphia to New York City … we never know what brings people into the city, it changes but I believe being able to find an affordable home is a big thing, but we just don’t have an opinion one way or another.

METRIC’S JAMES SHAW REMINISCES PHILLY LIVING AND TALKS THE BAND’S LATEST ALBUM AND UPCOMING TOUR

F

ounder and lead guitarist of Canadian synth-pop-rock band Metric, James Shaw views Philadelphia as his “coming of age city.”

At 16 years old, Shaw gained admittance to Curtis Institute of Music, the city’s renowned conservatory that includes notable alumni, such as American composer Leonard Bernstein and American-Italian composer Gian Carlo Menotti. A trumpet-major, Shaw vividly remembers his adolescent days studying music and buying alcohol as a minor, something which he was never able to get away with in Canada.

“I went from the middle of high school and skipping class and smoking weed to living on my own and in Rittenhouse Square going to like music school,” said Shaw, who also attended The Juilliard School. “I would go into a convenience store, buy a six-pack of Rolling Rock and go sit on the roof of my apartment building and look out at Rittenhouse Square.”

The musician and award-winning producer has returned to Philly for gigs, each time having the same sense of nostalgia.

“I have a really weird thing with Philly,” explained Shaw. “As soon as I get out of the tour bus, I remember the smell of Philadelphia. Like I grew up there because I kind of did have this moment of coming of age in that city. It has this extra special meaning for me that town.”

Ready to experience that visceral reaction once more, Shaw is coming back to Philly on Valentine’s Day to play at the Fillmore. Alongside lead singer, keyboardist, and songwriter Emily Haines, bassist Joshua Winstead and

drummer Joules Scott-Key, Metric kicks off a 27-date national tour next week. Promoting their seventh album, Art of the Doubt, which dropped in September, the concert will also feature openers Zoé and July Talk.

Metric fans wonder if the band, founded in 1998, will come to its close, especially with Haines’ solo career and Shaw’s ample production and contribution work for other artists and bands.

“The band works. The band is functional.

We enjoy being in the band. There’s no reason for us to necessarily stop,” said Shaw.

“But also the world is flooded with people, and there’s a whole other generation of music that is coming up underneath us. And it starts to feel a little bit like where is the relevance in where you are and what you’re trying to do and what you’re trying to accomplish.”

Outside of music, Shaw loves to cook and invites well-known musicians to his cabin up north for a meal. Shaw explained that invitees are expected to bring a vinyl record as a gift to add to his impressive collection. Shaw remembers receiving Neil Young’s 1986 album Landing on Water, which he claimed is “fucking terrible … unlistenable music.”

“It’s just beyond awful and yet it’s Neil Young,” Shaw said.

Shaw explained that Young was in the “middle of his career,” not yet the legendary Young or the newcomer who had to make every song a showstopper. The record was a realization for Shaw that he is in the middle of his career, positioned to take chances with his music and put out flop records.

“If you have a career at all, you have a beginning of your career. If you do well enough, you get to the middle of your career. And if

you sustain the middle of your career, you become a legend, because no one sustains the middle of their career except the Neil Youngs of the world” Shaw theorized. “It’s weird that it took me seven records to get to the middle.

But I feel now like my only job is to do everything in my power to experiment and learn, figure things out, try everything, don’t worry about what the world thinks, and just keep going with all of it until maybe I either reach legendary status or I die in a plane crash.”

As Shaw awaits either glory or demise, Philadelphia Weekly took the intermediary opportunity to ask about Art of the Doubt and other insights into Metric.

What was the thought process behind Art of the Doubt as a record and as the title song?

I think what we were toying around with conceptually was the idea that the questioning process, the sort of the doubting process, the idea that everything isn’t perfect and it’s the sort of nuance of where things lie in the cracks that is the beauty of being an edge.

It’s the idea that something that’s completely assured isn’t doesn’t really have the complexity that things that don’t have. The idea that when you’re when you’re creating something, when you’re crafting something, it’s sort of where you’re where your mind goes to what’s possible and what’s not possible, where you start to doubt things that things start to get interesting. We all know two plus two equals four but we don’t know is what we find interesting. And I think part of the process that we’ve been drawn to after all of these

years is what we don’t know and what we’re not completely assured of. I think that’s kind of where we were starting to explore on this record and starting to allow ourselves to make more mistakes and be rough around the edges and just sort of trust the output instead of instead of doubting so much.

This is Metric’s seventh album. How do you think the sound compares to the past six?

When we started like you know in the house in the woods and we went forward and we went forward through the woods and then forwards through the town and forward through the city and this time around for some reason it kind of feels like we took all of that knowledge and all of that experience and went back to the house in the woods and then forged an entirely new direction again.

So it kind of feels a little bit like we revisited everything we’ve ever done while trying to make something new. And I think it has this really weird like if you’ve been a metric man for a long time and you don’t hold the record then it kind of has this eerie familiarity like you’ve heard all of this before. But it also kind of has this like, “But I know that I haven’t heard this before. It’s kind of a newer, fresher sound for these guys.”

I think Metric has always gotten a lot of attention for its juxtaposition between gravitas lyrics and uplifting melody, a possible play on perception versus reality.

How do you respond to that understanding of the music?

She is constantly dealing with the depths of where the human mind could go while being extremely energized and moving forward. She’s someone who’s always been energized by being in touch with the dark side of things. For her, just a general sort of happy-go-lucky brings her no energy at all. So I think that lyrically, one of the things that makes the band the band is the fact that in the beginning she took these kinds of sad songs and brought them to me and I bumped them and put a dance beat behind it and made things be a rock band.

Twenty years later, it’s like we’re still doing that same thing. I think she’s found a lot of energy in that and if you see our live show, there’s a lot of energy. I think she’s trying to get across the idea that just because things are dark or frustrating or I think depression is really the wrong word because depressing takes the energy out of something, but if there is anger in it then that’s okay and you can use all of that fuel to get through those things. And I think that’s kind of why there’s a darkness to her lyrics but there is an energy to the music, because I think she uses the energy to get through the darkness.

A lot of attention has been paid to Art of the Doubt’s “Now or Never Now,” “Underline the Black” and “Dress to Suppress.” But is there a song that you think is undervalued on the album?

It was weird. I mean it’s Billy Corgan, so I’m not gonna be like, “Oh my God it was the most normal summer of my life,” because no, I would be lying. They are a weird band, it was really intense. They played for like three hours and it was like a total honor to be on the tour, it really was, like they are a seminal band, and it was a big comeback tour for them. So I was really happy to be offered the gig. But it was a weird one, we were playing at like 7 p.m., I don’t like playing at 7 p.m.

It’s like four o’clock is when nothing happens and 7 is when things start to happen.

But you can’t keep your energy at 7 p.m. And so we’re sort of like off stage at 7:45 and in a restaurant at 8:30. So it was kind of like tour but it was kind of like I was working for Travel and Leisure Magazine.

We have done a lot of those tours. We have opened for Muse, Imagine Dragons, Paramore.

We have done a bunch of that stuff.

Well, you’re being honest.

I’m always honest. I’ll give you that.

But you’re not opening for anyone when you come to the Fillmore on Valentine’s Day. Do you think the concert can fit in with the holiday?

When you close your record you’re not going to close it with something underwhelming but you gotta use something powerful to close a record. But at the same time, you’re putting it last which means that most people are never gonna get that. And so for me “No Lights on the Horizon” is my favorite tune, and I think it’ll probably be the one that gets the most undervalued like that should be that should be the song. If I die tomorrow, I’d like to be remembered for that song.

We’re not really one for like playing up to holidays. I think we played in Berlin on Halloween last year and it’s not like we come out in costume. So I think that will probably ignore the Hallmark version of that day and just go straight forward into a Metric show. If you want to bring a date, bring the date.

Now you’re touring the album, but you just finished a summer tour with Smashing Pumpkins. How was that experience?

Lovers of art everywhere, what if a painting came out and grabbed you...and killed you?

There are a lot of things about Netflix that are deserving of criticism and complaint. Its interface is cluttered and inefficient, and nobody likes those auto-playing videos. The streaming giant is also not very transparent when it comes to statistics. What’s more, they just made a deal to make content out of Gwyneth Paltrow’s gross pseudoscience mill, Goop. And perhaps worst of all, Netflix appears to not care – in the slightest – about giving its subscribers access to movies produced prior to 1970.

But there’s one big thing Netflix does that is undeniably great: it invests huge amounts of money in original content. And that’s a lot more than just Stranger Things and 13 Reasons Why. It’s a huge volume of documentaries and stand-up specials and even talk shows, from talent hailing from both the unknown and Hollywood established.

There’s also Netflix’s investments in original films. Roma, Alfonso Cuaron’s very personal film about his childhood in Mexico City, was picked up by the streamer and is an Oscar contender.

Netflix also played a part in restoring Orson Welles’ long-unfinished The Other Side of the Wind, which finally surfaced last year.

Now Netflix has brought out Velvet Buzzsaw, a film so weird, so offbeat, and so out of nowhere, that it’s the sort of release that major studios never take risks on anymore.

It’s hard to imagine, say, Paramount Studios green-lighting a horror film that satirizes the high-end art world, depicting the paintings

themselves striking back against art aficionados.

Sure, Velvet Buzzsaw, which was released last weekend on Netflix, following a Sundance Film Festival debut, doesn’t hold entirely together. But I so admired this film’s audacity that I didn’t much mind.

Velvet Buzzsaw was written and directed by Dan Gilroy, who teamed with Jake Gyllenhaal five years ago on the gonzo local TV news drama and arguably the best performance of Gyllenhaal’s career, Nightcrawler. Here, the two re-team, along with Rene Russo (who is married to Gilroy) for an art-house satire that’s not quite as cynical as Nightcrawler, although it certainly comes close.

Gyllenhaal stars in Velvet Buzzsaw as the gloriously named Morf Vandewalt, a powerful art critic, who finds himself up against Rhodora Haze (Russo), a former punk rock starturned art gallery owner. The bisexual Morf soon ditches his male lover (Sedale Threatt Jr., son of the former Laker) for Josephina, an art agent played by British actress Zawe Ash-

ton, the film’s breakout star.

Josephine soon discovers the dead body of a man who lives in her apartment building and with it an extensive collection of undiscovered art and a demand by the deceased artist they be destroyed. These wishes, of course, are disregarded, leading to a surprising form of revenge, carried out by the paintings themselves.

To imagine a local example, think about if the brouhaha over the Barnes Museum moving from Merion to the Parkway had ended with the Barnes Collection itself literally devouring those responsible for disregarding Albert C. Barnes’ wishes.

The cast is uncommonly strong from top to bottom, with strong supporting roles from the likes of John Malkovich, Toni Collette, Daveed Diggs, and the now grown-up Stranger Things actress Natalia Dyer.

Gyllenhaal shines in a role that’s somewhat against type, and Russo is one of those actresses who Hollywood sadly and unfairly

discarded once she reached a certain age. I was especially blown away by Zawe Ashton, an actress whose resume up until now consisted mostly of Channel Four dramas in the U.K. She’s got a major presence and holds her own against more established co-stars.

Sure, the Velvet Buzzsaw veers into the ridiculous at times. But the vibe is so right that the ludicrosity gets a pass. Gilroy’s previous film, the 2017 Denzel Washington lawyer saga Roman J. Israel, Esq., had some good ideas but ultimately fell apart at the end. This is much better.

Velvet Buzzsaw would make for a fine double feature with Ruben Ostlund’s The Square, the German film from two years ago that also combined art gallery intrigue with weirdo sex scenes, although Ostlund’s film never crossed into the supernatural.

Gilroy’s new film is worth your time, even if you have to scroll past Marie Kondo to watch it.

So you’ve done the letter which brought some success, what other methods of marketing are coming down the pike for The Fund?

Well, let’s start with what we have done.

One of our first tasks was to help raise $7 million for school libraries in K-3 classrooms. It was called the ‘Right Books’ campaign. The goal was to have books on every level in every classroom so that your kid might be in second grade, but they’re reading on a third-grade level, there’s a book for them. Or maybe you have a kid that’s in third grade and reading on a kindergarten grade level we have books for them to read. But the important thing is that those books are aligned with the curriculum but that they can read and comprehend them based on their reading level. This was anchored to [SDP superintendent] Dr. [William] Hite’s goal of having every child in a public school reading on or above their grade level by fourth grade.

We received $3.5 from the Lenfest Foundation that we had to match and we did that through public donations.

That’s actually pretty novel (pun intended) but specifically now, what’s The Fund working on to raise money?

We’ve worked with Temple to raise funds to replace broken instruments to classrooms, there were nearly 1,000 broken instruments that were repaired and replaced last Fall.

What campaigns are you personally most excited about?

We’ve reached out to area restaurants and asked them to work with us. One of the ideas that is scheduled to happen in certain restaurants throughout the city is we are asking customers to give a tip for city schools we’re getting restaurants to work with us from February through March to add a line item on their receipts that allow people to give a tip.

We are running that through February-March

and this was after going to the Pennsylvania Restaurant Association and presented our plan and we received really great feedback on the idea. I think there were 32 restaurant owners at that meeting. We’re still working on the details, but our office should have the number of restaurants that signed on to this idea very soon.

We’ve also worked with a real estate company called the Goldenberg Group and we did our first dress down day. We asked people to purchase a t-shirt that read, ‘I dress down for Philly Public Schools’ and on the back listed every district school. So you paid $35 for the shirt and $20 when to the school that you designated and $15 paid for the making and shipping of the shirt. That had a lot of success last fall and we are planning to do it again this fall. We had companies like Jenkintown Building Services, that bought t-shirts for all their crews cleaning windows in the city and we had other businesses that care by shirts as well. It was a great campaign and one we’re looking forward to replicating in the future.

What do you want people to know about these schools that they may not know, especially new residents that moved here and benefit from the abatement?

Look, we know our schools get a bad rap.

It’s just the way it is. But I know about these schools and there is a lot of good going on. For every failing student, we have three success stories. We have dedicated teachers and administrators. Sure, we’re poor, but we’re not hiding that and we as a District are doing a lot of good with the little that we do have. That’s why I believe in the work that The Fund is doing. We’re asking because we know it’s going to the right place and that’s to help our schools thrive.
